The SUMMER issue

A

Aaaah summer!! The one word that makes me think of beaches, traveling and lots of ice cream yet here we are! Though it is not recommended to travel unless it is absolutely necessary (thanks a lot Rona) but most of us are making the best of it. 2020 will go down as the most interesting year in history. However, let us put aside our woes and appreciate the fact that our dear artists have not stopped creating. I mean have you seen our cover? We consider our cover a true blessing, provided by the talented photographer Karl M. Lee. It's swimwear season and we are going to enjoy it and pretend we were at fashion week.

On another note, we've had the privilege of interviewing talented filmmakers that are ready to shoot their new movie, The Sweetest Girl, which is set to be recorded in Haiti in the next few months, however due to the current circumstances the first table read will occur via zoom. Our columnist Victoria did a small video interview where we were excited to get to know them a little better and can’t wait to see the final cut of the movie when it releases. Moreover, creativity was at an all-time high this month, experiencing this issue would probably be close to virtually going to an art show. One of the editorials we received dubbed “Dancer MMXX“ is absolutely mesmerizing. You will surely enjoy the uniqueness, heart and effort that transpires through the following pages. As always we thank all of our contributors and writers who made this issue possible and I can’t wait to see what the 40th issue will look like. I’m getting emotional already. We hope that you and your loved ones are staying safe and once again we can’t wait to see you in person once this is all over. We hope you enjoy our 39th issue.

FOREVER AN OPTIMIST

Efdot Moves from Project to Project Spreading Positivity

W

With the opening tagline of his website: ART FOR OPTIMISTS, Efdot believes that optimism is a choice. Based on the idea that we have the power to control our response to the everyday, the artist says it’s important to remember this notion. However, when providing a positive reaction is easier said than done, it’s also important to understand that feeling grief is part of the human experience. In 2014, after the burning down of his apartment building and destroying of all his possessions, the artist ran for his life. One of the only things to survive the fire was a rough sketch that read: optimist. As shared online, this piece of lettering became a symbol of hope and a reminder that intangible experiences and relationships will always matter more than material things. A couple of years later, he hosted an art exhibition in his apartment to spread awareness of The Optimist Project, which celebrates unity, acceptance and perseverance. During the recovery process, in addition to gaining a sense of gratitude, the artist reshaped his connection to community and redesigned his lifestyle. Beyond the craft, his motivation transformed into inspiring others to continue pushing forward in times of hardship. Eric Friedensohn, better known as Efdot, is a muralist, illustrator and creator. He is renowned for his site-specific murals, handmade illustrations, iconic “blob” motif and positive messages. Adding to his long list of accomplishments, the creator also produces limited edition prints and apparel and leads an online workshop. Inspired by skateboard culture and modern design, his community based art explores the way in which we engage with one another and showcases the places that his work is featured. From New York City, USA, and Monterrey, Mexico, to Mumbai, India, his murals appear on walls, streets and buildings both inside and outside.

Describing his work as dynamic, Efdot likes to include whimsical elements in order to cause the eye of the viewer to bounce around the page or surface. As previously mentioned, his signature element is the “blob” character, which originated after breaking his leg while skateboarding and illustrating figures to remind himself to stretch his limbs. With an interest in exploring a number of mediums and projects at the same time, Efdot notes his creative process is fluid in terms of tools. From using sketchbooks and spray cans to digital programs, the artist embraces variety and improvisation. “I like to jump from project to project, it keeps [work] interesting for me. I pick up the tools that make the most sense for the project. For example, with widetip paint markers, I can cover a lot of ground really fast. Sometimes it is less about the end result and more about the process of making,” he explains. As Efdot has matured as an artist, so has his creative process. Several years ago, he accepted a full-time position at WeWork. As a member of the leading commercial real estate company’s in-house artistic team, he helped to introduce some color and create all 26 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2020 | www.creativmag.com

of the fine artwork on the walls of its shared workspaces, which specialize in technology startups and services. On the to do list: murals, wallpapers, sculptures, signage and framed art. After just one year on the job, the artist was promoted to management level and facilitated the building and establishing of the company’s Latin America Art & Graphics team. Based in Argentina, he helped to oversee the opening of WeWork locations across the region.

WeWork became a platform for me to relaunch my career as a muralist

Featured Stories | EfDot

As a member of the collective and responsible for sourcing, hiring and collaborating with artists from all over the world, Efdot had the opportunity to explore different cities and study different cultures. Along the way, the special traveler learned new approaches, discovered new methods, developed a signature style and expanded his audience. Mentioning that he used to focus more on lettering and typographical quotes, Efdot says his mediums and subjects have become more diverse and his messages have become more open to interpretation.

“[WeWork became a platform for me to relaunch my career as a muralist because it had an unlimited supply of walls for us to paint. For the most part, the creative direction was in line with my aesthetic. WeWork cultivated my passion for large scale art, leading me to find my current style,]” he shares. Currently, Efdot is partnering with Topps on its Project 2020. Manufacturing gum, candy and collectibles, Topps is a major producer of sports and non-sports themed trading cards. Teaming up with 20 “culturedefining” international artists, the company is reimagining some of its most iconic baseball cards throughout history. Some as old as the 1950s, each individual collaborator is aiming to pay homage to the player, while offering a modern twist. Personally, Efdot is taking a nostalgic approach and finding subtle ways such as hidden messages to highlight the story of the sports legend.

28 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Also, on the go is Efdot’s latest project: @muralists, through trial and error. By sharing content and bringing which is an online platform that looks to build an people together, Efdot allows fans and followers to learn inclusive community of muralists and art lovers around from him directly. the world. In partnership with Jessie Mordine Young, he runs the account. Stating that the gap between fine art and street art is a thing of the past, Efdot supports that many artists have successfully bridged the two. “With @muralists we are sharing everything we know about painting murals, one post at a time. We are interspersing the educational content with features about inspiring murals and muralists. Along with the Instagram page, we are starting a podcast to have these conversations go deeper than a simple post and share full stories,” he adds. As long as a piece or project fits within his mission, Efdot says it deserves to be shared with the public. Although social media is an effective way to expand and engage with an audience, build relationships and initiate partnerships, it’s all about creating community – the basis of his work. Efdot is interested in not only sharing his skills, but also the lessons he’s learned over the years

TABLES OF BERLIN Photographed by Seigar

32 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Seeing beauty in everyday items This series present the capital of Germany like a mottled pattern. The colourful set is a continuum of multilayered testimonies of creation because in this city everything seems to be touched by art, as if it were an open air exhibition. As a photographer, I found creativity and originality in the textures of the curious finds. In front of the camera, all the wet subjects were struggling to overcome the gray and dull light, almost like making an effort to be noticed as contemporary art museum pieces. I feel influenced by pop culture and this is evident in my photographs. My expression is simple and tries to be catchy-oriented, using for instance a gimmick of repetitions. The protagonists of the images do not differ to my traditional approach to street photography, again the plastic people, the saturated colors, the reflections, and the crowdedpatchy compositions are present. Welcome to the damp and deepcoloured Berlin of March 2019. This photo-narrative was selected and edited during the confinement due to the Coronavirus as a way to escape from reality. These memories became my refuge in the search for beauty.

ABOUT SEIGAR Seigar is a passionate travel, street, social documentary, conceptual and pop photographer based in Tenerife. He feels obsessed with pop culture that he shows in his series. He is a fetishist for reflections, saturated colors, curious finds and religious icons. He also flirts with journalism and video. His main inspiration is travelling. His aim as an artist is to tell tales with his camera, creating a continuous storyline from his trips. His most ambitious projects so far are his Plastic People, a study on anthropology and sociology that focuses on the humanization of the mannequins he finds in the shop windows all over the world, and his Tales of a City, an ongoing urban photo-narrative project taken in London. He is a philologist and also works as a secondary school teacher. He is a self-taught visual artist, though he has done a two years course in advanced photography and one in cinema and television. He has participated in several exhibitions and his works have been featured in many publications. He has collaborated with different media such as VICE and WAG1. He writes for The Cultural about photography and for Memoir Mixtapes about music. Lately, he has experimented with video forms. His last interest is documenting identity. Recently, he received the Rafael Ramos GarcĂa International Photography Award. www.creativmag.com | Jul - Aug 2020 | CREATIV | 33

THE

SWEETEST GIRL EXPERIENCING OTHER CULTURES THROUGH THE ART OF FILM 62 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2020 | www.creativmag.com

As an African American woman, I have always known that people of my race share similarities in culture. Though we may be disbursed on different continents, our roots are embedded so deeply that at times we may feel them crossing paths. However, the best way to truly immerse ourselves in enriching our minds is through traveling. Exploring countries that drive and excite our curiosity the most. Realizing that traveling may be somewhat unrealistic at times, especially in this day and age, the alternative becomes obvious through the best form of art that encapsulates time, life and everything in between also known as the best platform for storytelling. Film. I personally have grown curious of several cultures around the world. Feature films and short films have been my passport to experience them all from the comfort of my living room or movie theaters. Thanks to talented filmmakers, I have joyfully expanded my cultural knowledge from countries such as Nigeria, India, China and the United Kingdom. With this said it was indeed a great pleasure to have had the privilege of speaking with talented filmmakers from Haiti, a country that surely is on my bucket list of “countries to visit, as they recount their story from their native land and how they plan on shedding light on certain cultural woes through their upcoming film set to be released hopefully next year.

The Sweetest Girl: A Forbidden Love Story a film created, written and produced by acclaimed author Yanatha Desouvre, co-written by screenplay writer Harry Jeudy and directed by Samuel Ladouceur. All extremely talented within their own categories come together to tell a compelling story set in Haiti, haunted by gun violence and human trafficking, which will surely leave its spectators experiencing an array of emotions. The film is an adaptation of the book Revelation: Roads to Redemption (written by Yanatha Desouvre) which pays homage to the famous Wyclef Jean’s discography. Sandra Justice

As a great initiative to celebrate talents of the same descendance, Yanatha used the production of the film as an opportunity to unite as many Haitian creators as possible to preserve the authenticity of the film. Starring Genji Jacques, Sandra Justice and Marie Michelle Desrosiers and many more. Here is a small synopses of the movie: “Jacques will play Lucias Goodman, a brilliant, seasoned, yet tormented law enforcement officer, who has his life thrown into disarray when his loving wife, prominent and controversial journalist Margaret Goodman, is shot in broad daylight and ends up in the intensive care unit. Overwhelmed with guilt, while his wife is in a coma, Lucias is compelled to confess his most heart-shattering secret. As Lucias proceeds to clear his conscience, the underlying threat that simmered in their marriage for decades begins to boil over to the point of no return. Lucias struggles to make peace with his past, which has lifechanging consequences in his present day. “

“ Each chapter has a Haitian proverb which tells a story about hope, faith , love, guilt and can leave you with an adverse array of human emotions - Yanatha Desouvre

Genji Jacques

Who's Who | The Sweetest Girl Though the crew had more of an American upbringing , the love they have for their ancestry and culture radiates throughout their work so that others can experience what they’ve experienced. For those who thirst of experiencing other cultures, like myself, I truly believe this work of art will touch all ethnicities and will shed light on subjects that most of us were unaware of. Production is set to start August 27th of this year and will be available to view sometime in the spring of 2021 through private screening and hopefully sold to bigger platforms for the world to see. Visit them at https://www.yanatha.com/sweetestgirlshortfilm Harry Jeudy

Prisca Milliance Recently we had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Desouvre and his crew and based on the conversation I was enlightened about so many cultural stereotypes from the country of Haiti that I had absolutely no clue they existed. For example the concept of “Restavek” [pronounced REST-AH-VEHK ] where children of poor families are sent to live with better off families to live as servants with the only premise of looking for a better life. The characters of the movie being of common life background are pretty relatable according to the director Samuel Ladouceur. Moreover with the help of Prisca Milliance their costume designer, the characters are made more realistic and more relatable.

Ways You Can SpiceUp Your Dating Life During a Pandemic

A lot of dilemmas come with dating. The drama of picking the perfect place to go out on a date, worrying about getting “ghosted” or even constantly checking for text messages from the person you’re casually dating, can be problems that come with working on companionship.

What’s not on the list of dating dilemmas, is dating during a pandemic. For many single people on the dating scene, dating during a pandemic is a new phenomenon. It’s having to make major changes in order to maintain a dating life and it’s having to adjust to dating techniques you’re not used to. Those changes involve a lot of staying at home, being on the phone more and sitting behind a computer camera while finding your best angles. Regardless of what, dating during a pandemic is real and it is declared “a thing” in 2020. So, how do you still date while there’s a pandemic? How do you spice up your dating life that now comes with several restrictions? I’ll tell you how, and it’s easier than you think.

Zoom Conferences in Fields that Interest You

The online dating craze is not dead, it’s only gotten more popular! With more people staying at home and being locked to their techy devices, online dating has reached its peak in 2020. According to Statista.com, “…online dating has become one of the most popular avenues for singles in the United States.” This means, your future partner could be waiting for you behind his/her computer screen; you just have to make the effort in joining their venture to finding someone online. Sites like Match.com, EHarmony.com and BlackPeopleMeet.com are just a few examples of sites you can test out to find your perfect mate. In some cases, you’ll get a free trial period from these sites so you can test the waters. And when that trial period is over, you can pay for an inexpensive membership and begin dating while you’re stuck in house. Don’t let the pandemic set you back. Use this time, while you really have the time, to date a few people you have interest in on a dating site.

For many single people, or people in general, staying active on social media could feel like a chore. It’s the constant reminder that you have to update your status, post pictures and lurk around for a few hours on a social media platform. Well, unless you have an online business or service, that theory is not true. If you are on the dating scene during a pandemic, you just need to create a social media account and allow yourself to be found. You can simply like a post from someone you might find interesting or chime in, in the comment section on a topic someone posted. Believe it or not, those little appearances on social media could lead you into the arms of a great person. You may run into old friends who could be datable now or you could totally meet someone new just by posting or liking a photo. Social media accounts are typically free to create, so it won’t cost you a thing to be discovered during a pandemic.

Don’t overlook this piece of advice. Registering for a Zoom conference in a field that interests you can surely spice up your dating life during a pandemic. For example, if you’re into real estate and might be looking for a new home, try registering for a Zoom conference on “home buying” and look to see if the Zoom conference will have a fairly large audience. This is a way to make yourself seen among lots of people who want to do the same exact things as you. You never know where a simple Zoom call could lead you. Showing your face on camera and speaking with like-minded people could lead you to meeting great people. And even if you don’t find a potential mate there, at least you benefited on information you could use for something you enjoy or take interest in.

A pandemic is no fun. You’re constantly worrying about staying healthy and you’re probably even fearing getting out there and going back to normal. However, your dating life doesn’t have to be a total bust because there’s a pandemic. If you are actively looking for someone or you’re waiting to be found, you must make the first step by putting yourself out there on the Internet. Whether you’re willing to try all three ideas or you’re only willing to try one, be open to spicing up your dating life despite being on lockdown. What’s best is that you can stay indoors and fully date online without the pressure of meeting up or sleeping with someone. Instead, you can have plenty of virtual dates and defy the odds of a pandemic slowing down your dating life.

El Morro Castle Old San Juan - Puerto Rico

Lying on the northwestern-most point of the islet of Old San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. The fortification, also referred to as el Morro or 'the promontory,' was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from seaborne enemies. In 1983, the citadel was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in conjunction with the San Juan National Historic Site. Over two million visitors a year explore the castillo, making it one of Puerto Rico's leading tourist attractions. Facing the structure, on the opposite side of the bay, a smaller fortification known as El CaĂąuelo complemented the castillo's defense of the entrance to the bay. Find out more on Wikipedia
