EDITOR'S LETTER

The SURVIVOR'S issue

O

Once you get a calling it's kind of hard to say no, Last year we've dedicated our cover to young Barbie who unfortunately passed away in March of 2015. However what was cool is that her family was able to have a memory of her through the magazine from a complete stranger (that's us). May she rest in peace and hopefully dwell in the Lord's place. May I recall that our Cancer survivor issues are always the hardest ones to put together. It's always our deepest honor and privilege to be able to publish the most heartfelt stories and this one is no different. In this issue we highlight the story of Barry Reiter, Business man, family man and pancreatic cancer survivor. We applaud him for fighting on, not only for his family but for himself. We also have the pleasure of highlighting this year's CCWC TRUNK SHOW which sole purpose is to give back to its community through the arts. We've even had the pleasure of welcoming new contributors, artists at heart, writers, photographers and visual artists that pour their hearts into their craft. We can't wait for you to see where we discovered them. Lastly this issue wouldn't be possible without the loyalty of our regular contributors they've selflessly given their time and talent to this magazine and I can't thank them enough for believing in this company. Here is to our 11th issue. Enjoy! Enjoy our labor of love and Kudos to all cancer fighters. CORHINN BRUNOT Founder and Editor in Chief Follow me on Twitter @ccwcnetwork

WINNING ON PURPOSE A Survivor's Story written by Dr. Cynthia Jean

T

Treat the patient, not the number. Those six words were indelibly etched into every student’s mind when I was in pharmacy school. They were repeatedly told to us in an effort to help future medical practitioners realize that we must see the BIGGER picture when it comes to dealing with our patients. They are more than just a mere set of lab values. A patient’s illness does not define who they are. Therefore when administering treatment, we strive to care for a patient who has cancer, NOT for a cancer patient. As a medical professional, I make it my aim to use all my resources to treat the WHOLE patient. Barry Reiter is a patient who has pancreatic cancer. He is more than just a collection of lab values and test results. The approach and attitude he’s taken as he deals with his diagnosis and treatment plan is a testimony of a patient who isn’t merely defined by a diagnosis. He is a husband, a father, a beloved colleague, and my Chief Operating Officer. I first met Barry about 10 months ago, when I interviewed for my current career position. His upfront yet kind leadership style were some of the things I appreciated then and still do. It is my delight to share the conversation we had regarding the battle he is valiantly undertaking. 1. I still remember the day you sent the email out to us regarding your diagnosis. What was that day like for you? What do you remember?

I believe I sent the original email out a day or 2 after I was informed of my diagnosis. I received a phone call at about 9am from my old oncologist who treated me for Lymphoma in 2011. He asked me if any other of my doctors had spoken to me yet. I had not. So the MRI that was a test ordered prior to having my prostate removed

3. I’ve heard you speak to others about the disease. You’ve spoken frankly about the facts of pancreatic cancer. What’s your mental outlook?

5. How has the support from loved ones and colleagues helped you along this journey?

The support has been ENORMOUS! I could have never imagined it. My immediate My mental outlook is realistic and family, extended family, friends, co-workers, optimistic. I understand that I will probably people I do not even know have touched me be gone in 5 plus years unless there is some in ways I could have never before imagined. Incredible hypersensitivity to cold. I cannot touch or eat anything below room temperature for 4 – 5 days after chemo (which is once every 2 weeks). The chemo I take is a cocktail called FOLFURINOX and it is said to be basically the strongest on the planet in both its ability to fight the cancer and in the 100 or so side effects that go with it. How do I get through it? If I am lucky enough to be home (like a weekend) I am in bed and that is it. If I need to go to work I FIGHT the side effects with every ounce of energy I have. The meds I take for them work well. 7. Post diagnosis, describe a good day.

A good day is being as normal as normal now is for me. I am never normal. The fatigue NEVER goes away and that is my biggest fight. I never imagined how debilitating fatigue could be. But I can do stuff. My appetite comes back. Some of my taste buds can taste food. I can go out to eat and enjoy it. I see friends and family. I have been to a Broadway play and a Met game. Because my chemo is once every two weeks I basically have one bad week and one good week in a fairly predictable cycle. 8. Healthcare has transitioned to a multidisciplinary approach; who are the specialists involved in your care?

At this point, it is just my two doctors from

Sloan Kettering. Dr. Michael D’Angelica who will hopefully be my surgeon this winter and Dr. Zoe Goldberg is my medical oncologist. I do take some supplements and some holistic stuff too but nobody else other than my two doctors are involved. 9. I remember the photo you posted of Joshua on his graduation day. It radiates with love and pride. How has the dynamics of your relationship changed with him? How has it changed with your other loved ones?

I can’t even answer this question without tears streaming down my face. Hildee and Josh are AMAZING and I will fight to my last breath for the two of them. Others count of course, but Hildee and Josh are my life and I would do anything not to hurt them or make them suffer. They are why I will WIN the G_D FORSAKEN BATTLE I am now in. 10. The male community is well known for not wanting to go for medical checkups. What message of awareness would you like to convey to them?

I have had medical issues most of my adult life. Too many to name. This is my 3rd cancer in 4 years. I just never thought that any of them were going to KILL me. If I did not go for check-ups and physicals and screenings, I would not know that I had prostate cancer and it was the prostate cancer that caused the diagnosis of the Pancreatic

Cancer. If I never had that MRI I would have had my prostate removed while the untreated monster was killing me without anyone knowing. It would have surely been too late to hope for a reasonable prognosis if that had not occurred. Most PC patients are not diagnosed until the cancer is advanced. I was also “A” symptomatic. Not a single symptom related to PC. “GO TO THE DOCTOR! IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE ONE DAY!” 11. What are you doing to raise awareness about Pancreatic Cancer?

The Lustgarten Foundation Walk on October 11th. I have also become involved with Lustgarten to raise awareness. They did a feature story on my that is on their website www.curepc.org. I am on their BLOG. Lustargten is the best way to go because of what is discussed above. I am hoping to get involved in the WORLDWIDE PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY which is November 13th. The same day as the day I had my first date with my wife, Hildee, many years ago. It’s got to be a good day. There is also a petition going around to have the NFL dedicate a day to PC as they do for breast cancer.

It's hard not to tear up after such display of kindness. On September 20th 2015 the founder and president of The CCWC Network Corp Corhinn Brunot received an award for Outstanding Leadership by Carroll Lynn Willgren, Founder of South Florida's Top Models Inc. during her annual fashion showcase entitled The CCWC Trunk show. Every year Corhinn puts on a show to benefit her community. This year was no different the purpose behind this year's show was to spread awareness about the prevention of suicide. The proceeds were donated to the Florida Initiative for Suicide prevention Inc., lead by Jackie and Henry Rosen. This union was facilitated by Emonde Prosper, poet and entrepreneur, who works closely with the organization and was able to open the show with a beautiful poetry piece starring the children of the suicide prevention organization.

"You are Unique" was the message of the night.

HAIR PLIANCY Do you hear that? It’s the sound of school bells chiming, once again, gathering children all around that school has opened. Kids may be unhappy that summer has quickly come to an end but parents all around are celebrating. As fall quickly nears and yellow school buses make their way through the neighborhoods, it’s time to consider how to find the best back to school fashions for clothes and for hair. For many parents, hair is often the last thing we think of but it is often one of the most stressful ‘items’ on the back-to-school to-do list. In this article, I will highlight some awesome but (almost) easy-to-do hairstyles for the little naturalistas in your life.

AFRO: This go-to staple has been in the natural hair scene since the beginning of time. Textured hair is naturally coil and tends to have body which makes it fuller than straight, thin hair. Because of its make-up, textured hair, when gently manipulated with a comb or a pic, will keep a natural shape of without braids or twists. Start with hair and scalp. Use your favorite leave-in condition on hair so you do not cause breakage. Use comb or pic and comb through, shaping hair with hands and tool throughout the hair. To totally own this style, add a flower or a bright headband that is unique to you. What I love about this style is its versatility and it is universal; no matter the age or the event, the afro is here to stay! 56 | CREATIV | Aug - Oct 2015 | www.creativmag.com

written by Nubia Previl

Two-strand twist: Twisting the hair unto itself is such a cute and fun way to not only protect your hair but to also create a fun style that anyone can appreciate. If properly maintained, this style will last for up to a week and can be further styled by pulling the strands up or down or even in different directions. To start, wash and condition hair like normal; allow to air dry about 75% and comb through with fingers using your favorite holding agent. The size of each strand is totally up to you. If you want a less full look, opt for bigger size parts, creating more visibility in the hair. Take two equal parts of hair, starting from the bottom or the nape of the neck. Twist one part of the hair over and repeat until the end of both strands and tie with a damage-free rubber band. Repeat this process all over the hair until done. When done, you can either leave as is or style it with accessories to really jazz it up.

School may be back in session but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. The kids may have to let their hair up but they can definitely have lots of fun with these cute, versatiles hair styles that make your baby the fashionista that she is.

Braids and cornrows: are so versatile, they can be styled in so many styles, they are endless in the styles you can do. Braids can be set to any length, on any natural hair or with extensions. Not only are they both protective styles, but both make cute fashion statements for little naturalistas and big ones alike. These are so popular that it’s easy to see why they’re a go to because they give you a break from styling for weeks at a time! Braids are different from twists in that you use three stands instead of two. Braids and cornrows can be styled in so many different directions, you’ll have styles to last you all year long.

Pepe DeSoto

the re-introduction of art "Creativity is thinking up new things; Innovation is doing new things" -Theodore Levitt

T

This interview was definitely meant to be. We discovered the work of Pepe Soto nicknamed DeSoto purely by serendipity. In our quest to find the next best artist, we stumbled upon his work on social media. We felt his work depicted pure innovation, so much so that we had to find out what his inspiration was behind his creation. Following is a great conversation with the genius behind the art. Enjoy! You've mentioned that your art is " unnatural, undefined, and unseen."when did you first recognize that this was your signature style ?

The DeSoto style, as you’ve described it, came out of the beauty of 66 | CREATIV | Aug - Oct 2015 | www.creativmag.com

experimentation. For years I had been using Photoshop and constantly testing different effects, textures, and plug-ins. I began to unconsciously develop a style; one which was analogous to me. I say it is “unnatural,” because each line, curve, and dimension breaks away from what is the norm and what can be done by thinking inside the box. I enjoy creating pieces that resonate differently with each viewer. Therefore, I say that it is “undefined,” because every piece is anxiously waiting to be decrypted by the viewer. Lastly, it is “unseen,” because it is a form of creating that is unique to me as an artist.

You've been an artist all your life, however you've mentioned that you started in the visual arts after you retired from music, how long ago what that?

UNTAINTED

I began to use Photoshop when it first came out and photography had been a passion of mine for many years prior. Around 2005, I retired from music and then fully immersed myself in the visual arts. Personally, I’m not fond of the word retirement; instead, I’d say “transition” is a better word. This is because I believe that there are no boundaries between the arts. All of them combined are what form the uniqueness of humanity; its ability to produce and feel emotion through song, film, written works, or visuals. Fragmented Reality is definitely a new style to me and our readers, how did you come up with this process?

Fragmented Reality is a divergent combination between photography and digital art. Utilizing complex algorithms and “raw creativity,” as I like it to call it, is how the style was born. As I learned in music, you don’t leave a mark unless you create something remarkable. The creation of it was not simple, yet not burdensome either. When many artists begin to create, they already have a preconceived notion in their head of what the finished work will look like. Being my deviant self, I decided that I was not going to follow that route. Utilizing my electronic canvas, a Wacom tablet, I began my journey without a map. I moved through valleys of trial and error, but I never felt lost. It was the excitement of seeing the finished collection in unison that drove me throughout the process. To my surprise, each piece complemented the other and together they created a story. I always say that the Fragmented Reality style is a reflection of human nature. Each piece hides a multitude of secrets and relays a plethora of emotions. Everyone will react to the pieces in their own way and I have witnessed this firsthand.

Tell us a little bit about where you have exhibited? have you ever exhibited outside of the United States?

I completed the Fragmented Reality Series I collection in December of last year. Originally, I did not plan on exhibiting or even formally launching my collection. However, my son, Emmanuel, saw my collection and jokingly said that he would no longer speak to me if I didn’t reveal my artwork to the world. I teamed up with him and we launched the premier collection in May and had our first exhibition in Los Angeles at Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts in July. We are planning various exhibitions for next year and I cannot

wait to give more people the ability to experience the artwork in person. You have an upcoming event in December I'm assuming it's miami's famous art exhibit ART BASEL, will you be presenting a new collection?

No, I will not be presenting a new collection in December. This will be my first time exhibiting at Art Basel and I will be partaking in the Miami River Art Fair with Nina Torres Fine Art. I cannot wait to see how people react to the artwork that will be shown.

Me? A doctor? No way!

www.creativmag.com | Aug - Oct 2015 | CREATIV | 67

What impact did you envision your art to have on your audience?

I wanted people of all ages and backgrounds to be able to connect with my art and take something out of it. Art is unique to each person. All of us have different hearts and minds. I didn’t want to create something “traditional” or “common.” My main goal was to create something extraordinarily complex, yet beautiful, which could have a positive and lasting impact on everyone who experienced it. You are definitely an amazing artist, does creating ever feel like work to you?

Thank you! You’re too kind.

WHERE TO FIND HIS ART

Honestly, creating never feels like work to me and if it ever did then I wouldn’t consider myself to be in the process of “creation.” This process can take years or a day to come to fruition and sometimes I reckon you never truly stop creating. It is a process individual to each artist’s mind. As you create, you are infusing your very being into your work. This artistic ability which we call creation is the upmost expression of the human mind. In my opinion, everyone has an inner artist. We all just express ourselves differently. I express myself by creating art and always plan on doing so. With your experience what tip do you have for upcoming artists who would like to follow into your footsteps?

Never give up on your dreams. Many times as an artist you feel like an outcast. My family tried to push me to go into medicine. Me? A doctor? No way! I held my ground and pursued my dreams as an artist and I can say with confidence that that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Don’t fool yourself though; you’ll encounter bumps along the road. I’ve encountered an abyss of trials in my artistic career. But one thing that I’ve learned is that the passion of the artist supersedes these trials. No matter what stage in life you are in, there is no limit to the amount of success you can have. Discover your passion, begin your journey, and never look back.

A Paradigm Shift

L

Language is always tied to something more substantial; your thought paradigm. You could rehearse as many positive affirmations as there are, but if your thought process is jacked, your exercise in self-talk will prove meaningless! The hardest journey you will ever undertake‌ The hardest portions of my life's journey I've encountered, each time the invisible gears were being shifted to move me to another realm, have always been substantially tied to a paradigm adjustment. The process is extremely tedious, slow-moving and to be quite honest, frustrating to say the least! When I first became aware of this dynamic, I remembered saying out loud to my Master Designer; "Why can't I simply move to the place where I want to go and secure the job that I want to have?" His response was crystal clear. I remember it like it was yesterday; "The hardest thing I will ever have to do Georgia, is to change your mind. Moving you from one geographic location to another is the least". That was almost 10 years ago.

further begun to increase. My ability to adjust perspectives started expanding and my sensitivity to and awareness of the wisdom of my Master Designer became more heightened. Now I no longer resist the demand whenever it presents itself. I have developed enough wisdom over the years to know that the signal for an upgrade in my thinking is simply a precursor to the next phase of my journey towards fulfilling my destiny.

We move in the direction of our most dominant thought‌ If we indeed move in the direction of our most dominant thought and if our lives are truly the greatest reflection of our belief system, then it would behoove us to invest the time needed in getting our minds upgraded. Develop a voracious appetite for reading; begin listening to recorded messages; start attending conferences, workshops and seminars; cultivate a habit of reading and meditating on the written instructions detailed in your Human's Manual For Living (the Word of God). Simply begin placing yourself in the arenas where you want your life to ultimately go and as you do this, a mind-overhaul will ensue. It happened to me. Many things have changed since then. I have evolved and matured Are you about due for a paradigm shift? in ways unimaginable! When I made the decision to simply submit to the process of a mind over-haul, my capacity to envision 72 | CREATIV | Aug - Oct 2015 | www.creativmag.com

TRAVELING WHILE SICK

T

Travel has changed over the years. That change has opened the world to those that thought they would never have the opportunity to experience new countries and cultures. While there’s more accessibility than ever before, traveling while having a medical condition or with a loved one who has one may seem like a challenge. Over the past 20 years or so, every major form of travel has changed to help accommodate those who have a variety of medical conditions. Rest assured, thanks to new options and awareness within the travel industry, it’s become easier than ever for everyone to travel. Tip 1 – Know What You Need It’s important to know exactly what you or your loved one will need when travelling. Think about such things as medications, medical machinery (i.e. oxygen tanks), bedding requirements, and other needs. This also applies to knowing what’s needed in room accommodations – such as, roll-in showers, a bed lift, or wider doors to accommodate a wheelchair. By taking the time to think things through, and preparing in advance, you can insure that you and your loved ones will have all medical aspects covered.

needed to travel on a cruise or to take certain medical equipment abroad. Therefore, review your plans with your doctors prior to traveling or making any travel arrangements. Tip 3 – Use a Travel Agent Researching a trip online is convenient. Running into trouble while traveling and having little to no support to help you is not. In general, travel agents can think of many things you’ll need for travel that you may not. So, be specific when sharing with them your medical condition and equipment needed. They are your best resource for planning your travel so it doesn’t become a nightmare vacation. There are travel agents with a specialty in planning travel for those with medical situations. One resource for finding these types of agents is Special Needs Group (http:// www.specialneedsatsea.com/). SNG specializes in providing special needs equipment for consumers. In addition, they train and certify travel agents in all things special needs. This training equips agents with the knowledge to help you plan your trip with the proper equipment.

No health-based situation should keep you or your loved ones from traveling. YOU ARE.

Under the clear blue sky I sat down getting high on the vibes provided by the sound of the waves and sunshine. This feeling is fitting Best believe its easy keeping it breezy sipping on the illest elixirs you can only find on the shores of this city. And with family? Are you sure that life can’t be more pure because this pleasure I have to endure cannot be for sure. And here comes my progeny, running towards me after basking under all that UV. They are the unsung philosophers, the ones that slowly ponder about our broken world, contemplating solutions as their knowledge unfurls. Daddy? Yes son. Can I ask you a question? Absolutely hon (pauses)What am I? As any illogical allegation hit us we retort with a similar type of sentence: What do you mean what are you? You are human, born and raised by loving parents Yes daddy but What am I? They say that I am neither Haitian nor Dominican. I am a weirdo. Can you please tell me? Because I want to know. Can this day be any darker? This was a true haymaker leaving me reaching out for stars in my hazy universe. Don’t expect me to leave my worries under the palm trees cuz I can feel their prying boney claw creeping out of my skull, animating my jaw Hasn’t it been enough? Abusing your liberty of speech to dismantle conjoined countries. We aimlessly point our malnourished meat grabbers wishing upon one another the worst this world have to offer. How can there be peace, when one side is chanting with anger a “fuck you amigo” without falter. Before any reflection or attention, the only concept my people grasp is the destruction and total eradication of any element or configuration emerging from Dominicans. “Demoli” is by nature Haiti, scarred and bruised and eaten like arachnids by its babies and yet, stands tall and proud, clinging to a former title from its history. I really don’t think our forefathers fought for such a laughable feat.

We are citizens of the world, Let's make love not war. 80 | CREATIV | Aug - Oct 2015 | www.creativmag.com

And you you promote equality? I fail to see it when the future of every soul depends on one’s skin tone. You too, condemn the original whether from the “Haitiano” or the “Moreno”. Nada bueno sale de all , co o! is becoming a concierto when referring to people from the east coast. And please stop referring to Duarte, Sanchez and Mella when the first thing you do is turn your back and sell your ass for a Big Mac. Cuz, let’s face it, if it wasn’t for gringos, some hungry “haitianos” and some of that smack, you’d still be laid back getting back slapped by a Spaniard political hack. Make no mistake, this is no banter. And frankly I am tired of the damp stamp you have to wear in order to let others understand that you blend in wherever you stand. I do not want my son or daughter to be labeled under the stable of either the fairy tale or the fable. I have recollection of the Mother of All Lands in the Caribbean being heaven for even people coming from foreign. Quisqueya, an island united under one banner fought to keep invaders at bay. Rebellion is part of your existence, it is your construct, your sustenance. You have the skin of Dessalines and the wits of Duarte. Both bloods run in your veins as you attain more knowledge and break free of your ball and chain. Be sure to surround yourself with knowledge as it is the only mistress society cannot complain with. Remain sane when speaking and your brain will guide you to the righteous domain you justly pertain. You my son, are Quisqueyan, and neither Haitian nor Dominican cant’ proclaim that you are not what you claim. You are the perfect union between a “n g mawon” and a “cimarr na ” . Do not think for a minute that others will be disrepute you for being you. Stand tall You represent Toussaint. Be proud, La Trinidad is with you. You are the incarnation of peace, love and union. You are the dream, the unsung hero of too many from both countries. Unique, rare and uncommon, you are the yellow sun, shining bright on both Republics. I cannot tell you how proud I am of you. At such a young age you cloud my judgement and confound me to the darkest corners my mind. And I smile So as these skeleton bones make me open my mouth I only spit out 3 words : You are
