REVIEW Year in

AICM 20212022

Welcome

On behalf of the board I welcome you to our 2022 year in review. The purpose of this report is to document and celebrate the scope of activity that the AICM undertakes throughout the year and to give guidance to our plans for the future.

2022 was a year of two halves. With the pandemic coming under control at the end of 2021 we were able to return to face to face events while continuing to leverage virtual events via flexible training arrangements and webinars.

It is testimony to the strength and stability of the AICM that we emerge from the pandemic stronger than we entered. During the pandemic, as always, members have been able to turn to the AICM for support, information and connection with specialists within the industry.

Members and stakeholders have been very excited to meet with each other in person and to share stories as to how they fared during the pandemic and to continue AICM’s central purpose of supporting credit professionals in their daily role.

Continuing with our strategic plan to invest and deliver on our promise to members we implemented a new website and member portal to improve the experience when registering for events. Our new system offers significant uplift in functionality which the team will continue to activate throughout the year. Thank you to our members, division councillors, partners, sponsors and broader stakeholders for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the long awaited return of our National Conference in Brisbane.

In 2022 your AICM continued with its stated aim of investing for the future.

In addition to the new systems that support the office and volunteers plus give an improved member experience we also invested in updating our recognised qualifications and added new training modules to our already comprehensive suite.

We have increased the operational capacity of the office with the appointment of Claire Kasses as our new General Manager which has allowed the team to continue deliver member focused activities such as webinars, economic breakfasts, career recognition through our pinnacle and CCE awards and scholarships.

Myself and the team are particularly proud of outcomes already achieved from the newly implemented website and member system considering the tight timeframe we set ourselves. Immediately we saw operational efficiencies and member benefits from the improved interface. We were also able to implement new resources for members such as the job board, supplier directory and online profile updates with more to come.

We saw some significant return on investment on years of consistent effort lobbying for legislative changes with outcomes achieved on issues that impact credit professionals all too often, details covered in this report. In addition we published our annual risk report and work to expand with further investment into consumer representation.

Finally I am pleased to advise that our membership is at the highest level since 2004.

QLD Division Report

As we look back over the year that was, Queensland really is going from strength to strength, and this is only possible with the amazing work that our council does year on year. I want to acknowledge each of them as they commit their own professional and personal time working closely with the team at National Office to ensure that events are run smoothly and content is delivered effectively for our members. We are all members ourselves and we want to make sure we do the best job we can. Your Queensland Council members are Julie McNamara – QLD Director, Michelle Kirkby – Vice President, Fiona Doherty – Treasurer, Steven Staatz, Carly Rae-Orth, Ashleigh Mason, Merv Mahony and our newest members Emma Purcival, Madison Ryan, Zandalee McKenzie and Melissa Kirk.

The QLD Young Credit Professional Awards (YCP) event held in July 2021, newly sponsored by the team at ARMA and CreditorWatch, was a successful night, our first cocktail style awards night. Madison Ryan (who is now a valued QLD council member) was awarded the honour of YCP for QLD. We are looking forward to supporting this years 2022 QLD winner Lachlan Poulus at the National Conference in October.

All our events in Queensland were well attended, especially WINC with 217 registrations. The Queensland membership base grew an incredible 11.8% between July 2021 – June 2022, which is a fantastic achievement given the current climate. A big thank you to Merv Mahony and the team at National Office for driving this increase.

We also welcomed one new CCE (Certified Credit Executive) in Queensland and we are hoping to increase this number in the coming year. If you would like more information on this program and its requirements, please reach out to Ashleigh Mason on council or National Office.

During the 2021 Virtual AICM Conference, QLD were honoured to receive the AICM President’s trophy for the second year in a row, which is an amazing feat given the uncertainty we faced this past year. For this I want to thank our members, who came along to these events, reconnected with us and our partners who continue to provide support even during these unpredictable times. We cannot wait to connect in person with all our members at our first face to face conference in 3 years in Brisbane. Here’s hoping we can keep the President’s trophy here in Queensland for another year!

We thank our National Partners – CreditorWatch, Equifax, illion and TurksLegal.

We are proud to be partnered with six inspiring businesses in Queensland; Vincents, Results Legal, Esker, Access Intel, CMA and our most recent partner NCS. We really appreciate the support of our Supporting Sponsors – Finstro, NCI and Oakbridge Lawyers. They are all present at each event and are happy to support us when we reach out.

Thank you to Nick Pilavidis, the AICM board and the team at National Office. You all do a great job across the country for all divisions, and we appreciate everything you do for us in Queensland and our members.

Thanks to our past councillor

NSW Division Report

James Smith MICM CCE New South Wales Division President

It is an honour and privilege to write this report as the 2022/23 NSW Division President in conjunction with Theresa Brown who was Division President for the 2021/2022 year.

On behalf of the NSW Council and our members, I thank Theresa for her significant contributions leading the NSW council. Theresa continues as Vice President.

We are very proud to have grown the NSW membership by over 8% last year in a challenging period.

Some other achievements we are most proud of are:

l Great applications and winners in our Pinnacle and Young Credit Professional Awards.

l Delivering the 2022 WINC event after cancellation of the 2021 event due to COVID lockdown.

l Return to high attendance levels at all events including our Risk Seminar, Economic Breakfast, networking events and trivia nights.

The NSW council has also contributed at a national level with:

l Grant Morris contributing to revision of the CCE exam and awarding of Education Foundation Scholarships. The new exam is currently being rolled out across the country.

l Treacy Sheehan contributing to the development of new membership acquisition programs which are seeing some early success.

l David Hunt to the Professional Development committee where he will continue to lead and deliver impactful and topical PD events.

I would also like to thank Arthur Tchetchenian for his contributions to the council and look forward to him rejoining council when personal and professional commitments allow.

Our council continues to grow in strength with new

councillors joining our efforts to support members including Gary Poslinsky and Stefanie Ross. Both bring incredible energy and a drive to all portfolios and activities that they have been involved with.

I would like congratulate NSW Councilors Balveen Saini (fmr. Division President) and Kimberly Watts after the arrival of some little future credit professionals this year. Both have taken some time away from council over the last months and we look forward to their return.

We would not be in the position to hold the fantastic events we do without the support of our partners and sponsors. On behalf of our members I thank our National Partners - CreditorWatch, Equifax, illion and TurksLegal, our Division Partners - Ampac, Esker, Jirsch Sutherland and Onguard, and our Supporting Sponsors - ARMA, Byron Thomas, Commercial Credit Solutions, Finstro, Holman Webb, NCI, Oakbridge Lawyers, Results Legal and Spenda.

Finally, please take the time to connect with the current NSW Council (see full list at the end of the report) on LinkedIn and at the next event. We all volunteer in these roles to further the credit profession so look forward to hearing how we can continue to meet and exceed your expectations. We welcome your feedback and are here to help you get the most out of your AICM membership.

Thanks to our past councillor

VIC/TAS Division Report

Thank you for choosing me to represent Victoria and Tasmania as President. I am so excited and honoured to help drive more member engagement and share credit knowledge across both states. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of both new and retiring volunteers because without them we would not be able to deliver the outstanding service we do for our members.

Firstly, I want to recognise the time and dedication that our previous President, Catrina Galanti provided on council. She truly shaped the council that we see today, and I am forever grateful for her guidance during my time on council.

I’d also like to acknowledge two previous council members Ricky Forster and Amaran Navaratnam. Ricky opened the credit conversation with businesses that had never been a member before and drove the consumer credit focus. He was the 2021 DUX of CCE and he always put his hand up to help. Amaran was our leader in YCP and he mentored 3 nationals winners – Sunny Sharma, Rebecca Roberts and Daniel Alley. The two of you have left huge shoes to fill.

Today, I am supported by the incredible Mary Petreski, as my Vice President. Mary has a wealth of knowledge in credit and her commitment and passion for educating credit managers has been key to her exceptional work as the CCE portfolio

Thanks to our past councillors

manager. I am also thankful for my steadfast long time council experts, along with Mary you are the backbone to this council – Brian Kay, Robyn Erskine and Lou Caldararo.

We have 6 new council members this year and each of them are already making improvements in their portfolios. Welcome Alex Hawtin, Daniel Alley, Prue Greenfield, Sia Patouras, Rex Cheng and Maddi Basso.

This quarter we held a very eye opening and well received Economic Breakfast at the TurksLegal office in Melbourne. We also held our 2nd WINC luncheon in Tasmania this month and we raised over $800 for our charity, “Dress for Success”. I’d like to thank our sponsors and our subcommittee, in particular Teena Ryan for helping make this event great!

We would not be in the position to hold the fantastic events we do without the support of our partners and sponsors. On behalf of our members I thank our National Partners – CreditorWatch, Equifax, illion and TurksLegal, our Division Partners – AMPAC and Esker and our Supporting Sponsors – Finstro, NCI, National Mercantile, Oakbridge Lawyers, TaleFin and Tasmanian Collection Services.

Finally on behalf of all the councillors, we are all here for our members, so please reach out to anyone on council with your ideas on how to make our division even better. Looking forward to seeing you all at the conference!

SA Division Report

I am both incredibly proud and honoured to have been recently elected as the South Australian Divisional President. Looking back on the last year, our councillors have been working tirelessly to organise events and bring the credit community together after what has been a challenging few years during the pandemic.

Thank you to our 2022 Division President Neil Fennell for your hard work during a tough time. I appreciate that Neil will remain on council to continue his great work.

We would not be in the position to hold the fantastic events we do without the support of our partners and sponsors. On behalf of our members I thank our National Partners – CreditorWatch, Equifax, illion and TurksLegal, our Division Partners – Credit Solutions, Lane Communication, Oakbridge Lawyers and Oracle Insolvency and our Supporting Sponsor – NCI.

This year we held a number of successful seminars where we heard from speakers such as Lisa Anderson from Coopers Brewery, Rob Jackson from Beaumont Tiles, Grant Morris of Southern Steel Group, Matthew Ormsby and Alan Scott of SV Partners, Ratibor Mirkovic of NCI Commercial Collections, Cedric Hodges and Nathan Schwarz of Deloitte, Alice Carter and James Neate of Lynch Meyer Lawyers, Mike Hayes of Piper Alderman and many more.

We also held a very successful Women in Credit Luncheon in May where AICM supported the amazing not-for-profit organisation Dress for Success. We also heard some incredible stories from Joan Knezevic, of women who have been assisted by this organisation. Our guest speaker at the event was Jenny Paradiso of Suntrix. Jenny shared some inspiring words of wisdom and told us about her journey to get where she is today.

We are also very proud to be represented by our very

own Clare Venema at nationals for the Young Credit Professional of the Year award and we wish Clare all the very best. We also look forward to the upcoming Pinnacle awards and are working to identify a number of nominees.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise our current councillors and all of the hard work they have put into the AICM over this past year. Without their contributions we would not be able to organise and deliver these amazing events for our members. I would also like to welcome our new councillors and subcommittee members, Rob Jackson and Adrian Stewart to the team, we are excited to have you both on board with us. This year we said farewell to Gemma McGrice who has stepped down from council. Gemma has been on council for a number of years and we wish her all the best and we thank her for all her years of hard work.

Moving forward into 2023, the council plans on increasing the number of social events and gettogethers throughout the year to give members more opportunities to connect and catch-up on a social level. We also want to focus on engaging and mentoring young credit professionals in the industry and increasing their involvement with AICM.

We are excited to see what 2023 has in store for us, and cannot wait to put on another fantastic year of events!

Thanks to our past councillor

WA/NT Division Report

A steady as she goes year for the WA AICM Council.

On the events side, it has been relatively quiet for the WA division, with our YCP event and end of year function taking place into the latter part of 2021, then welcoming the new year in March with the always popular economic breakfast, where Aiden Depiazzi of Deloitte once gain kept members informed and engaged with his economic insights. Another very successful and well attended Women In Credit event in June brought our members out and we saw record numbers descend on the famous Elizabeth Quay for the event.

WA was able to realise an ambition in the year that has previously eluded us, with our very own Synergy taking out the Credit Team of the Year award. Having come close in preceding years, it was a very welldeserved win.

We had the very impressive Vaibhav Gupta of Metroll named as our Young Credit Professional of the Year award (with Scarlett D’Agnone of Westrac a deserving runner up.

WA Councillors have been front and centre in national AICM activity with myself, WA Director Rowan McClarty and Vice President, Raffaele Di Renzo all contributing to Webinars, discussions and various panels and sub committees throughout the year.

It has been a good year in terms of membership growth for WA, increasing by 5.3% throughout the year. A focus for the WA Council, as is always, is to continue to grow our Western Australian membership base, and these are positive signs.

We also continue to look for candidates amongst our ranks to sit the CCE examination and I cannot espouse the value and benefit of the CCE

qualification, it definitely does open pathways and gives our members great confidence going about their business.

The WA Council were saddened by the resignation of long standing council member, Byron Savage after 12 years of committed service. In that time, Byron was instrumental in several changes through the WA division and strongly committed to progression and improvement within the institute. With Byron stepping down, Cheri Bowater, in just her 2nd year on council has stepped into the Treasurers role. We are always on the lookout for new councillors with growth of council being a strong focus for us going into FY22/23.

In closing, many thanks and appreciation go to the WA Council: Raffaele Di Renzo, Rowan McClarty, Kevin Allen, Cheri Bowater, Jeremy Coote and Vaibhav Gupta for their dedication and commitment to the Institute and WA Members throughout the year. We also thank our divisional partners – BRI Ferrier, Nova Legal and SV Partners and our supporting sponsors NCI, Oakridge Lawyers and Spenda for their support of the AICM throughout the year.

Thanks to our past councillor

Strategic plan

In early 2020, the AICM Board developed a new three-year strategic plan.

This outlines five strategic priorities and the strategic initiatives to support their implementation:

1. Grow membership

2. Enhance learning and development

3. Lift professional standards

4. Strengthen voice and recognition

5. Improve operations

6. Adapt to the pandemic

In October 2021 the strategic plan was updated to include this additional priority and 9 new initiatives.

The strategic plan explained who we are and outlined AICM’s purpose, vision and promise to members.

It also divided our core activities into eight pillars:

1. Education

2. Professional standards and employment

3. Advocacy

4. Promotion of Credit Professionals

5. Events

6. Communications & resources

7. Governance & management

8. Members & stakeholders

Our people

Since our foundation over 80 years ago, the AICM has been a member driven organisation. Today credit professionals make up our national board of directors who provide governance and strategic direction.

Our division councillors are also full time credit professionals that work to ensure we are delivering what members need. The board and division councils are supported by a dedicated national office team.

We invite you to connect with our volunteers and team via LinkedIn as we create even closer connections among our profession.
