miller activity complex CASTLE ROCK PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Stepping into Philip S. Miller Park, it’s hard to imagine the regional playground becoming even more exciting. Whether you’re looking to take a hike, go for a swim, or let the kids blow off some steam, the facility truly has something for everyone. Now, the park is offering even more fun. In October 2014, Philip S. Miller Park officially opened to the public. The original opening included the park’s crowning jewel – the Miller Activity Complex. Since then, residents across Town have been saying “meet me at the MAC.” This new indoor recreational facility has brought all kinds of fun, family friendly opportunities. The two indoor fields, aquatic center, trampoline room, golf simulator, drop-down batting cages and children’s climbing structure make the MAC the perfect gathering location for the entire family. Heading outdoors, the adventures at the park continue. An additional synthetic-turf field and more than 7 miles of soft-surface trail allow participants to escape into the natural environment surrounding the park. Looking for more of a workout? The Challenge Hill might

be the answer. Designed for the more active park-goer, the 200-step staircase offers a thigh-burning workout along with the reward of one of the best views of Castle Rock. Plus, adventure seekers – the Castle Rock Zip Line Tours and Epic Adventure Tower may be for you. The privately operated amenity boasts a zip line course of 10 lines stretched through the park’s ridgelines. As for the Epic Adventure Tower, it is not for the faint-of-heart. The tower requires thrill seekers to scale a 40-foot climbing wall, zip and jump from a 40-foot platform, or free-fall from a 70-foot platform while protected by state-of-the-art auto-belay devices. Epic is an understatement. Parents looking for family fun can also head outdoors. The Adventure Playground isn’t like anything you’ve seen before. The unique playground experience blends into the terrain of the area. A 60-foot slide, climbing ropes, disc swing and a large-dome climber are just some of the features kids can enjoy.
Save the date! All this is just the beginning. The Town is overjoyed to announce the adventures have officially grown at the park. The second phase of Philip S. Miller Park will open with a celebration Saturday, May 14. Mark your calendars to join us for family friendly fun as we explore the new features opening at the park. The second phase of the park is all about community gathering. The new core plaza, millhouse and amphitheater will be exciting new meeting locations for residents to enjoy. The core plaza is the newest place to convene at the park. The plaza houses group picnic pavilions, an outdoor fireplace, additional restrooms and a splash pad. Looking for the perfect event location? The park’s millhouse may be the answer. The indoor/outdoor event center is great for up to 125 people. An outdoor pond and water feature make this the perfect location for weddings and other special events. Plus, anyone who has been to the park knows the landscape around the regional attraction is beautiful. Finally, the amphitheater will bring live entertainment from around the country to Castle Rock. The facility features intimate outdoor seating in a spectacular outdoor environment and will host concerts, shows and events throughout the year. The Celebration Concert Series The Celebration Concert Series kicks off at the end of May. The series will bring in a variety of artists from the Colorado Symphony to popular rock bands. Each month, a new genre of music will be featured, making sure this event series has something for everyone. The Rocky Mountain Sports Festival This festival will celebrate athletics and Colorado’s adventurous outdoor culture. Join the fun Saturday, Aug. 13! There will be more than 12 sports tournaments going on around Town. Watch the competition and enjoy family-friendly fun at the park. Stay tuned for additional dates and event details. Check at CRgov.com/events for more. Celebrating the community and providing opportunities for families to spend time together was a priority for the Miller family. Overall, the park is something of which the Town believes Philip S. Miller himself would be proud. For more on all the amenities at Philip S. Miller Park, including classes at the MAC, event reservations and more, head to CRgov.com/parksandrec.

plore PHILIP S. MILLER PARK TRAILS This trail network consists of single-track trails divided into four different, but interconnected, loops with paved, accessible segments in the active park area near the MAC. The trails explore all the valleys, knolls and high points of this 270-acre site. A unique feature on the site is the 200-step Challenge Hill staircase. The staircase climbs 178 feet in elevation and is similar to the Manitou Springs Incline. The trails and Challenge Hill are free and open to the public. Bikes are not recommended on the Challenge Hill staircase. This is an active regional park that now includes a zip line course and Adventure Playground area. Trail users should be aware of all park users and use caution on the trails and in the parking lots. Parking is available in the park and the main parking lot at the MAC. There are additional trail access points on Plum Creek Parkway and Wolfensberger Road. In the near future, the trails will also connect to Ridgeline Open Space and the Stewart Trail network to the west; the Ridgeline Trailhead parking lot is located on Coachline Road. The trail system is available for adoption through the POST Partners volunteer program. Call 303-814-7456 or email postpartners@CRgov.com for details. Trail length:
8 miles
Trail rating:

trails to exp TRAIL ETIQUETTE Spending time outdoors is one of the joys that come with the changing season. For many people, hiking or biking the Town’s trails is at the top of the summer list. Before heading out the door, the Town wants trail users to keep a few things in mind to help keep everyone on the trails safe. 1. Be courteous and communicate – the Town’s trails are mixed use, meaning they are open to hikers, bikers, runners and walkers. Warn people when you are coming up behind them. Kindly request that slower traffic hang to the side while faster traffic passes. 2. Yield – it’s harder to go uphill than down. Generally, downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic. 3. Stay on the trail – don’t trample the natural habitat along the soft-surface trails by straying from the path. 4. Be aware of blind corners – slow down through the twists and turns, and please watch out for other users. 5. Keep pets on a leash – interactions with wildlife like snakes and coyotes don’t usually end well for pets. Save yourself a vet bill and make sure our four-legged friends stay safe. 6. Don’t tune out – if using ear buds, make sure the volume is low enough to hear your surroundings. 7. Dirt, yes. Mud, no – stay off wet or muddy trails. Leaving tire or shoe prints on muddy trails damages the surface and could require costly repairs. Use one of the Town’s many paved trails instead. Following these basic rules can help ensure all trail users can enjoy the natural beauty around Castle Rock. Check out the Town’s Facebook page (/CRgov) before making any weekend plans. Follow our Trail Thursday posts for important trail updates.
TRAIL CONDITIONS Living in Colorado, we are lucky to see as many as 300 days of sunshine per year. While many people are excited to head out the door the second the sun peaks out, a trail may not be as ready as we are. Stay up-to-date on trail conditions at CRgov.com/trailconditions. Hiking or biking on soft-surface trails when they’re muddy can severely damage the surface. The trails through Town are designed with drainage in mind, but during the snow/rainy season things may not drain properly. When there’s snow on the ground, and temperatures rise above freezing, the ground begins to thaw the top layers of soil. However, the ground below is still frozen. This doesn’t allow for proper drainage and can cause a moist and muddy surface. Walking, riding or hiking when it’s muddy can damage trails, requiring costly and time-consuming repairs. A good rule of thumb – if you see snow on the ground, stay off the soft-surface trail. The Town has more than 30 miles of concrete trails that are available year-round.

plore WOLFENSBERGER BRIDGE A new pedestrian bridge near Philip S. Miller Park will offer a safe connection to much of the Town’s trail system. Construction on the new Wolfensberger Pedestrian Bridge has been underway for the past several months. Recently, a majority of the bridge structure was set into place. The bridge will connect Philip S. Miller Park and Ridgeline Open Space and will create a continuous 17-mile native surface trail that will bring together more than 650 acres in park space. This important connection provides a safe, grade separated crossing that creates a gateway into Castle Rock and enables better traffic flow for special events being held at Philip S. Miller Park. The bridge is also an important component of a large future trail loop connecting the East Plum Creek Trail with The Meadows and Downtown. The bridge is similar to the Crystal Valley Parkway pedestrian bridge but is 25 feet longer. Construction is expected to be complete before the summer season.

sunny season Strider – Learn to Bike
The simplicity of Strider bikes allows children to concentrate on the fundamental skills of balancing, leaning and steering while propelling the bike in a natural way. Strider bikes provide a safe, smooth and natural transition to a pedal bike. Bikes are provided, and helmets are recommended. Limited availability due to low class ratio: five riders to one instructor.
Strider – Advanced
This class allows children to progress the fundamentals they acquired in the Learn to Bike class. There are more obstacles that challenge their balancing, steering and leaning capabilities. The majority of this class will be spent on the paved trails around the Miller Activity Complex. Bikes are provided and helmets are mandatory.
Fencing Camp – All Skill Levels
This camp is designed for participants of all skill levels. Beginner fencers will understand the fundamentals of fencing after one week of practice. Campers will learn the history of fencing, footwork and blade work (parries and reposts). Coaches will provide level-appropriate instruction for all progressive fencers. The program will also provide a focused and fun camp for intermediate and progressive saber fencers, offered by truly outstanding coaches. More advanced fencers will refine fundamentals, learn new techniques and develop more effective competitive strategies. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a snack, water bottle and non-marking tennis shoes. All fencing equipment and a camp water bottle are provided in the class fee.
Jedi Training Camp
Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away the Jedi Knights protected the innocent from evil doers. Now is your child’s time to join the Jedi ranks and become a hero! All participants will learn how to train their mind and body to become the greatest heroes of all time. Jedi trainees will learn how to wield a light-saber to fight off the evil Sith warriors and save the universe! At this camp, your child will learn how to use the light-sabers in theatrical fighting, participate in strength and agility training using various exercises and games, learn Jedi lore and history and learn how to put together a massive battle. Fencing Discount: $250 for both camps. Bring a lunch, camp counselors will be there to supervise the kids from noon till 1 p.m. Must call 303-814-7449 to register over the phone and receive the discounted rate.

All equipment is provided and participants must wear closed-toe shoes.
Skyhawks Camps All camps will be held on the outdoor field unless weather is unfavorable and then they will be moved inside the MAC.

get your gam SOCCER BUDDIES (INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES FOR AGES 15 MONTHS-12 YEARS) Soccer Buddies goes beyond just teaching kids athletic and soccer skills. Our expert coaches use soccer as a tool to teach confidence, perseverance and teamwork – core values that will help your child thrive in any situation. We design our classes to provide age-appropriate fun and learning opportunities for kids 15 months to 12 years old. Classes are split into appropriate age groups. For registration and additional class information visit us online at coloradosoccerbuddies.com. TRY A CLASS FOR FREE! Koalas 15 months-3 years This parent participation class uses fun games and activities to build confidence, motor skills, balance, coordination and more while your child kicks colorful balls and learns their colors. Socialization is also challenged by learning to share, take turns, and practice teamwork. Your child will also build their stamina and physical fitness in this class as the coach keeps it very high-energy, fast paced and fun. While this class is still a parent participation class, we are working towards using less of the parent and more of the individual child. Listening skills are challenged, and autonomy is encouraged. This class is a transitional class to Bears. Bears 3-4 years This class is the youngest class without parent involvement. It gives the child their first opportunity to exercise true listening skills. We encourage independent thinking, following directions and teamwork which will assist the child in preparation for school. We use a variety of props and age appropriate games to introduce the kids to group activities that stress active motor skill development and social interaction. This class is very high-paced and works on developing ball-handling skills, coordination and physical fitness. Polar Bears 4-6 years This class is the perfect environment for a child who has never played, yet challenging enough for a child who has played before. Kids will build their self-confidence in a supportive, motivating and positive atmosphere. Skill-building activities that develop foot-eye coordination, agility, balance, and kicking/running control will be introduced in this class. Young players will develop their confidence and a love for physical activity with our high-energy, outrageously fun coaches. They will get a chance to put those skills to use in small-sided games to maximize the “touches” the kids get on the ball. Polar Bears 7-12 years This class is the perfect environment for a child who has never played, yet challenging enough for a child who has played before. More fundamental soccer skills are introduced in this class. Confidence will soar while kids master certain skills. We will also develop speed and conditioning, as well as field awareness, technique, tactics, agility, and more. Kids in this class will scrimmage for 20 minutes of every class. This class maximizes the touches the child will get on the ball by playing small-sided games with highly-skilled coaches guiding play in a positive atmosphere. Dates:
