FESTIVAL PARK Big things are happening for a popular Downtown landmark

REIMAGINED

Construction underway at Festival Park Whether it’s listening to music at a live concert, spending a summer night watching a movie under the stars, or participating in volunteer events like Spring up the Creek – many residents have fond memories at Festival Park. Now, with construction officially underway, big changes are coming for the Downtown landmark. Construction began in February with an official groundbreaking. The goal is to be finished before Starlighting in November, depending on weather. That means things are happening fast and a lot of changes are already underway. Second Street is now permanently closed. Traffic can only enter the street one-way from Perry Street and is required to exit through the alley north. This access is primarily for deliveries to businesses in the area. When construction is complete, the street closure will allow for a pedestrian walkway and market plaza to be incorporated into the park. Additional park improvements include a landing pavilion and fire pit, permanent restroom, splash pad, great lawn and creek-side picnic area. The Town, Downtown Development Authority and the Downtown Merchants Association are working together to help transform the park into a modern center. The goal is to create a true central gathering location for the entire Castle Rock community. Looking to keep up with construction? Get more information and biweekly updates at CRgov.com/FestivalPark. Or, sign up to get email updates at CRgov.com/notifyme.

Change is in the air - Construction causes adjustments for 2017 summer events The summer season is a great time for events in Castle Rock. In the past, many community events were held at Festival Park. To accommodate construction, several 2017 events have been relocated. Check out details below.

RUETERRenewable water, relaxation and recreation Rueter-Hess Reservoir will have something for everyone All work and no play can make anyone have a bad day. While the primary purpose of Rueter-Hess Reservoir is to store water, soon the site will be even more when recreational opportunities are introduced. Now, you can be among the first to experience these new amenities. Whether it’s a long hike filled with birdwatching, a trail to shred on a mountain bike, or the sporting event you’ve been dying to enter, new recreational opportunities will bring unique improvements to Rueter-Hess. The reservoir is located on Hess Road about 1 mile east of I-25 and the Castle Pines Parkway exit. Maintaining the quality of water in the reservoir and preserving the natural environment is the main goal, but adding recreational opportunities will help make the storage site an even greater amenity for the public. The Town is teaming up with the Rueter-Hess Recreation Authority – which includes the City of Lone Tree, City of Castle Pines, Town of Castle Rock, Town of Parker, Parker Water and Sanitation District and Douglas County – to determine potential outdoor activities for the reservoir. The team recently completed the overall master plan. To start, the reservoir will only be opened for limited recreational programming. Folks looking to head to the reservoir will have the opportunity to sign up for a sanctioned event through either the Castle Rock or Parker Parks and Recreation departments. While planning is still in the works, some programming opportunities could include: stand-up paddleboard classes; open-swim training classes; scuba diving instruction; duathlons; and walking tours. Find information for some of the new programs in later pages of this Recreation Guide. A portion of the program fees will be reinvested into the development of the reservoir.

Get a sneak peek! Join us for National Trails Day Be among the first to blaze the trails at Rueter-Hess Reservoir. Join us for National Trails Day and help celebrate the outdoor spirit that truly highlights Colorado living. The nationwide event will take place Saturday, June 3. Join the local celebration from 9 a.m. to noon at the reservoir. Guided hikes will take place every 30 minutes. Come discover the uncharted natural environment. Preregistration will be available at CRgov.com/TrailsDay. There will be a fee of $5 per vehicle. However, preregistration will get participants an access pass to drive right into the site the day of the event. Day-of registrants will have to wait in a separate line. The American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is a nationally recognized trail awareness program that occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. The program is intended to inspire the public to discover, learn about and celebrate trails. Questions about the event? Contact Barbara Spagnuolo at bspagnuolo@CRgov.com. Or, look for event updates at CRgov.com/TrailsDay.

In addition to the special events, future improvements could open the opportunity for residents to participate in activities like hiking, biking and non-motorized boating. The entire plan will take up to six years to complete. Stay tuned to CRgov.com/RueterHessRec for more information on programming options and future activity opportunities.

Balls are lower in compression so move slower and are easier to hit. This provides processing time and better develops optimal swing patterns. Racquets are sized for small hands, and the courts are smaller and easier to cover leading to tons of fun without frustration. Camps (four-day sessions) and classes (four-week sessions) are available. COLORADO JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS (AGES 8-18) Director of Tennis, Ben Wolfe will be conducting practices for players of all abilities. Players will be able to practice hard and improve their tennis game in an energetic, fast-paced setting. A great opportunity for young players to get practice playing matches as they compete against local towns and clubs. Over 30 hours of tennis. CAMPS AND CLASSES (AGES 11-16) Classes are for players with little or no formal tennis instruction. Players will learn the fundamentals of tennis in a fun and energetic environment. HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION CAMPS These four-day camps are designed to prepare current or future high school players for high school tennis success. All strokes are covered, as well as singles and doubles strategies, practice methods/techniques and off court training designed to help players make the varsity team. TENNIS LESSONS Private and group lessons are the perfect way to rapidly improve your game! Times are arranged with the pro, and cost is set on a per player basis.

Gentle I Yoga Recommended for those who wish to practice yoga asana and conditioning exercises that open hips, lower back, legs and arms, upper body, spine and lubricate the joints of the body. This meditative practice utilizes positions that are supine, prone, on hands and knees and seated. Gentle II Yoga This course offers the same instruction as Gentle I and includes a few standing poses to help you in balancing on your feet and learning how to utilize your core in standing poses.

Wednesday

9-10:15 a.m.

Core Conditioning This class focuses on the core strength, flexibility, mobility and balance of the human body while using the yogic breath to calm the nervous system as we work. Flow Yoga Focus is on practice of postures in a vinyasa flow (movements taught in progressive order and moving from one pose to another with breath). Experience in Level II recommended. This is a class to practice intermediate poses and does not focus on teaching the asanas.

Tuesday

8:30-8:50 a.m.

All Levels Yoga This class connects asanas (postures) and breathing through gentle warming movements, strength and awareness-building vinyasa (flows). Attention to alignment, personal inquiry into sensation and breath work are emphasized. Students are encouraged to practice at their own pace. Appropriate for beginners as well as intermediate students.

Hot Power Flow Yoga An energizing and physically challenging-flow class guaranteed to give intermediate and experienced yoga practitioners a solid workout. The room is nicely heated for the Hot Power Flow classes. Meditation Meditation offers rest for the mind and the body and invites you into a deeper state of relaxation and awareness. Experience an increase in mental acuity, creativity, self-awareness, relaxation and peace.

TRAIL MAINTENANCE GROUPS The POST Partners Program works with two trail maintenance volunteer groups that help maintain and improve our trail system and bike park, the Ridgeline Wranglers and the Rhyolite Bike Park Dirt Crew. Volunteers help with creating water diversions, clearing scrub oak and other brush that may encroach on the trail, maintaining jump lips, implementing trail improvements and eliminating berms, ruts or noxious weeds. Both groups conduct monthly outings (April-October) and schedules can be found at CRgov.com/POSTPartners or sign up at VolunteerConnectDC.org. Volunteerism can count towards both high school and court-ordered community service requirements.
