SAM RUDD

Sam Rudd’s work sits firmly in the tradition of British pastoral landscape, but she brings her own spontaneous vision. Her inspiration comes from the scenery around her two homes in Cheshire and North Wales. One, a Utopian landscape of steep hills crested with cottages, hedges and fences, meandering ancient field lines, woodland and stone walls. The other – where her home meets the shoreline – a world of undiscovered beaches and rocky coves framed by steep hills and distant glimpses of Snowdonia.

From the flux of woodland and field patterns to the ebb and flow of estuaries and sandy bays, Sam’s initial sketches gather the experience of place and season. Using a mixture of representation and abstraction, shapes and compositions are developed with a restricted colour palette and energised mark making from which the finished work emerges, often unplanned. Although verging on abstraction, each work comes from a physical place capturing emotion and experience.

By using a limited palette, Sam’s paintings are more concerned with rhythm, colour and pattern than topography or weather. The distant red roof of a cottage is echoed in the colour of a foreground rock or flower. The slate blue of a cliff line picks up the form and tone of a beached dinghy. Her skill lies in extracting the essential information of a scene, paring down detail to create a carefully balanced composition of deceptive simplicity. She creates a strong sense of place though much about the place, the time and the experience are left to our imagination.

Sam worked for many years as an illustrator where she drew constantly often under tight deadlines for newspapers and magazines. Her line is remarkably free and organic – she draws with paint or overlays a few strokes on her compositions to create the dynamics of the scene, perspective, texture and content. Drawing may be the foundation of her work, but these are paintings which conjure an elegiac vision of rural landscape painted with a feeling of deep familiarity and contentment.
