A former restaurant-bar on the Sanremo touristic harbor is redesigned into a completely new image. The idea behind the project is to build a tropical location, inspired by the Bali mood. The tool is to find in a versatile framework made by a metal grid of pipes. Some of them are used for the lighting system and ones are the support for plants and vegetation. Other pipes build the top structure for bartenders, while the ones on the ground make the footboards of the counter. Also, a part of the structure defines the handrail of the staircase. The system means some important advantages: no channels traces for lighting on walls, ceiling and floor, removable structure, variability in the lighting project. The ceiling is a blue sky, visible through the vegetation hung to the pipes. Outdoor, the project includes two dehors - one at the ground level and one on the first floor - made with iron-glass systems. The façade on the street changes, with the introduction of a Sedum vegetation blanket on the roof dividing the ground from the first floor.

The small apartment was empty for over 20 years. The new owner dreamed a pocket space to live, a unique and precious house designed on himself. The original two-room flat has been converted in a single space through the central partitioning wall demolition. In this way, four functional areas are formed in the space. The first is the entrance, where a pattern of triangular tiles on the floor clearly defines a dining room. The second is the kitchen - an “L� type - and its back, which is a service space of storage and laundry. The third is the living room: this is the area less affected by transformations for its maintained wooden floor and the useful height division with a mezzanine structure. This last is the fourth space, the sleeping one, with a new iron staircase from the living room. Besides, the bathroom is the continuation of the storage back. A central role is occupied by the threshold: the most visible is the one dividing the entrance from the living, that derives from the wall demolition and is circled by a micaceous iron frame.

The new restaurant is located in front of the Lavazza headquarter, in place of a former newsstand. The project follows the small space optimization and defines a review of the newsstand idea. The main dining room is characterized by two architectural elements: the toilet block and the counter structure. The first is a new object in the middle of the space, coated with translucent polycarbonate panels shaped to the vaults lines. The second is a “C” shaped block, covered by wallpaper and closed by a synthetic marble on the top. It is surmounted by an iron structure - to hang glasses - fixed to the side walls. The furniture is mostly custom-made: circular tables, arc-shaped lamps, cabinets and wardrobes. A synthetic dark-red floor stimulates contrast with the colours of the walls. These are in two ways: a Dove grey for the renovated ones, an ancient skin for the sides close to the counter, to repeat the layering and the continuity with the last commercial activity.

The corporate headquarter in Abidjan needed a new public image. The major focus of investment is centred in the entrance hall. The need is for a clear multinational company able to decline itself in the local identities. Pantone colours are bound: yellow and grey, as well as the logo company. The results are three proposals of the same space with different accents on some compositive elements. The “A” model offers the yellow as a vivid object with some spotlight. The bamboo texture appears as a warm element for local visitors. The “B” model is a more “classic” office space, with micro-perforated panels for the ceiling - integrating the lighting led system - and the yellowgrey contrast for the walls. The “C” model brings out the counter with its yellow laminated surface and uses the grey for a “diamond-type” ceiling with some bigger lighting surfaces and the wooden block of the guardhouse.

A historical villa is interested in a housing investment plan. To economically optimize this heritage, the client asks for two operations: the interior renovation and partition of the historic building and a new extension volume - made of apartment - with an elevator connecting the villa floors too. The new volume faces the law constructions limitations detaching itself from the eastern property border and the villa walls. Its aspect tries a comparison with the brick image of the villa - a strong material red, as well as in the Piemontese tradition - and it is composed by simple geometries combined to build a high and compact building. This is studied also in its constructive side and thought to be build reaching a high architectural value at a low cost. Apartments of the new building are variable: there are simplex, duplex and triplex possibilities. The villa garden is finally divided to achieve spread fruition by future residents.

In the old cemetery of the town, an ancient sanctuary is falling to ruin. The owning family needs a new space to commemorate its loved ones, in the same place. A restoration is impossible, for the cost and the changed standards sizes from law. The new sanctuary is thought as a “holiday home”, reflecting some peculiarities of the family’s tradition. In this case, they come from a rural world, a sphere where the exploitation of the resources is important and everything is recycled. The new sanctuary follows this concept through a massive image which is cut and supported by horizontal and vertical shelves in black granite. In between this stoned grid, there are plots which have to be occupied by the family people and memories. In this sense, some ancient marble panels are recovered from the last sanctuary for the ossuaries, clear smooth quartzite plates close the niches and the XIX century stone decorations from the old sanctuary (two corner blocks, four capitals, and a central Celtic cross) are relocated in the new façade.

A bathhouse on the sea needed to be renovated into a larger and more competitive touristic project. In particular, the request was for the insertion of a restaurant inside a former millstone building from the XVIII century. The work consisted in the production of some views - including the surrounding natural and artificial space - of this object. It is a traditional stone block, easily mistakable with the rock wall under the coastline road. The images wants to return a kind of “mimesis� with the landscape, trying to demonstrate that a new activity doesn’t necessarily mean an appearing value. Also, the tectonics of the building contributes to complete this harmonic concept behind the project, returning to life a forgotten material heritage of these places.

The public commission of a new building - just outside from the Leipzig city centre - regarded the construction of a new primary and middle school for the district. The area is an empty urban plot covered by spontaneous grass. Following the morphological rigour of the office, the project is synthetic and pure and consists of two monolithic blocks connected in the passage between the school and the gym. The main object of the school rotates around a central staircase with a zenithal natural lighting. Around this core, a system of common corridors and wells makes all the rooms and the laboratories usable. The main entrance is a corner solution, with a kind of suspended basement supported by four rectangular-section pillars. The skin of the building is made of small yellow bricks, to communicate with the surrounding buildings. The interior is made by functional walls that serve as benches for the common areas and as equipped walls inside the rooms.

The polycarbonate factory Doctor Gallina based in the metropolitan city of Turin wants to change its working place. Therefore, the competition is related to the rehabilitation of a former industrial object, included its surrounding area. The project goal is related to the renovation of the façade system, working with a grid made of polycarbonate panels. The new skin is thought to be applied to the existing structures and follows a parametric reason, based on environmental and functional dynamics on the different project areas. The landscape project is connected with this integrated design, including the new factory in the environmental narration of the territory. At the centre of the project, there is reliability to the environment, intended as wellness of workers, attention to the ecological impact and links to the bigger strategic programs as well as the LEED protocol, the WELL, the ITACA Protocol.

The project goal is the recovery of the Este’s park and the Ducal Palace through the insertion of a wooden structure and the rereading of the vegetal palimpsest. The wooden structure repeats two ancient axes cutting the park and defines the change from a regular planting system to one which goes in the forest direction approaching the river. The structure gives the possibility for a new point of view on the architectural and landscape heritage and represents a green mechanism for water spraying - against the dry season in the Po plain. Some objects always in wood - built with the same technology of the long structure - are opportunities to both realize the presence of some historical traces in the park and to use the park in the free time. The lacking part of the palace building is finally proposed with the same structure, leaving the permeability to observe the majesty of the huge park and the new elements revisiting this ancient and noble zone of the Italian landscape.

The proposed operation starts from documentation at the urban scale of Aosta, to underline layerings and passages in the material consistency of the city. The archaeological area is therefore organized as a narrative path. This is the core of the project and it means variable materiality of the tool through mechanisms of evocation, transparency, reversibility/permanence, sensoriality. The project consists precisely in a fruition ring, which works as a connector of traces and monuments. During the path, some elements are designed with light structures: a new entrance, the backdrop and the observation points. At the end of the visitor route, a new canopy is requested and it is here designed as a curve wall of hewn stones. The project takes also care of the majestic foreground of the Alpes. L’anello interno all’area archeologica – L’ingresso alla zona monumentale avviene mediante una struttura rivestita da listelli di legno, evocante il terrapieno di epoca romana. Una stele lignea al suo fianco è insegna e segnale. All’interno dell’area archeologica, i percorsi formano un circuito, definiti da passerelle in legno, dove belvederi semicircolari costituiscono punti di vista privilegiati con informazioni visuali e tattili. Il teatro è lambito da due percorsi e attraversato da uno centrale lungo cui convergono le passerelle nel proscænium, consentendo di liberare parte dell’orchestra. Alle sue spalle, una struttura rialzata in legno, accessibile tramite una doppia rampa, consente una visione dall’alto dell’intero sito, anche con dispositivi interattivi, in direzione sia del teatro che dell’anfiteatro. Il Centro servizi nell’ex Bureau diventa punto d’ingresso occidentale al sito, con funzioni didattiche al piano terra, e uffici divisi da pareti attrezzate mobili al primo. Il piazzale diventa uno spazio pubblico, separato dall’area archeologica da un antiquarium lineare, contenente i reperti archeologici del sito fuori contesto ed eventuali ricostruzioni tridimensionali di quelli contenuti nel Museo Archeologico. La Tour Fromage ospita, al piano terra, uno spazio didattico sul sito con installazioni interattive sonore e tattili. I piani superiori prevedono un allestimento di elementi modulari che consente di adattare gli spazi a esposizioni differenti, con accesso diretto e indipendente dalla nuova scala esterna.

The new primary school is a monumental “urban fact”, integrated with the urban fabric and the park - in which it is located - and space-use opportunities generator. The architecture is intended as a circular public space that defines public areas and corridors, in collaboration with the park vegetation. In the Southern side of the plot, the building produces a square, corresponding to the child entrance to the school. The maintenance of the tree-rows on the plot perimeter ensures child safety and car traffic isolation. Architecturally, the building works as a joint between two serpentine volumes, a more “office” one and another which is primarily public. These two elements define a central courtyard - for the children’s recess - and culminate in the emerging brick block close to the entrance. This object builds a portico area - a covered space - enriching the public vocation of the project. An important feature is the sustainability of the intervention with passive technologies for heating, cooling, acoustic insulation, electricity and water supply.

The Lorenteggio library project is an object working on space flexibility. It is located in the Lorenteggio park, inside a Milan district in course of retraining. The structure of the building is made by concrete gates that define - in plan - a discretised elliptic shape. A glass offset skin encloses the interior space of the library which is almost completely variable. This variation is guaranteed by movable partitions and furniture to recreate the functional space depending on the needs. Three green areas inside the ellipse are the hard knots for technical facilities and offer fresh natural air in the centre of the large space. The roof is characterized by the strips of the gates which are filled with a green cover. Also, the very flexible spatial system offers connections with the outside area of the park, in a complete linkage between the indoor reading rooms and the outdoor leisure areas.

The idea behind the project is the one to revisit the whole image of Caluso, as the gate for the “Canavese region”. Starting from an incremental graphic to describe different aspects and spaces of the town, the work is centred around the St. Francesco convent, in the South part. The building assumes public functions, restored with a conservative approach and integrated with a yellow driven system of architectural and urban elements. In particular, the space in front of the church is turned to a pedestrian area - a square - and furnished with benches, signs, lamps, pavements and shelters. All these objects build the general strategy which starts from a circular shape - the same adopted to represent the new image of Caluso. Therefore, the cloister gallery is partially closed with a glass partition to directly link the square with the other public space close to the building. The exhibition is the outcome of an intensive workshop organized by three different institutions: Politecnico di Torino, Atelier Mobile and VIVIAMOLAq. The work is centred on the students’ activities of self-construction. Analyzing the public mobility network of L’Aquila the orientation programme has taken into account a particular bus stop close to the Engineering Faculty of L’Aquila. Therefore, the site has become an experimental field for material works to reflect on the link between the mobility of the city and its public spaces. The outcome is a wooden structure - built off-site and assembled onsite - that is functional as seating and shading system and that is educational in the students training and the landscape knowledge. The structure is offered to the city, hoping for these kinds of on-site activities spread.

The exhibition is centred on the domestic topic of hospitality. In particular, it works on the customizing spaces of the house where each visitor is a guest able to shape it to achieve his idea of hospitality. The exhibition is made with “small theatres”, wood-frame structure where visitors can arrange their housing scenography. There are backdrops - the hard system - and objects - the soft one - placed thanks to small clothespins inserted in a grid of holes on a wooden panel. At the end of the exhibition, many interactive visitors have posted on the social the images of their ideal house, and the organizing team have collected them into a folder of possible - and individual - answers about contemporary living.

The request of the exhibition is to consider the possibilities of an image reshaping. The frame in which this happens is the catastrophic collapse of the Polcevera highway bridge. The study - all centred around the same basic image - works on latent layers of the space. These are progressively chaotic and define the opportunity to reshape a possible reconstruction, which has to be necessarily linked to its landscape. This brings the image to deformation, where the whole system is directed to an augmented state of entropy, in particular when the rebuilding isn’t governed with taking care of the surrounding landscape. The bridge is not necessarily something which join. The reconstruction of the bridge produces a switch in the point of view, a new balance. It is not about restoration, the landscape is irreversibly transformed, fragmented, recomposed. One absence defines inedited material trajectories.

A series of empty rooms in the Turin Campidoglio quarter is the set of this urban spread exhibition. The removed housing is that kind of occasion that starts from abandoned objects. The paradox of the overfurnished spaces - with wasted things - is the one of a house somehow livable. This habitability opens the interest on another paradox: the law standard and limitation for the housing projects. These are outdated laws and today paradigms of living and the shape of the house itself is completely changed and continuously changing. For this reason, the exhibition provocatively divides the room in two: a clean break between living and sleeping areas (where the objects are representative of the supposed uses) with some “use claims� as labels opening the reflection about the ratio of the law and the effectiveness of a housing condition.
