WELCOME PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the National Association of Building Designers (NABD) enters its fourth year since forming in 2013, the Association continues to grow and develop. The Association now unifies more than 85% of the nation’s building design association members. With over 2700 members NABD continues to support and promote the best of the best in the Building Design industry. We again come together as a whole to celebrate the 2016 National Building Design Awards, this time on the Gold Coast of Queensland. The pages of this Magazine will demonstrate the breadth of work that Building Designers carry out across Australia. They will highlight the vast and varying types of projects being undertaken, the expertise, the creativity, the excellence and the exuberance of Building Designers Nationwide. One of the highlights of the National Awards program, not only as the President, but also as a fellow Building Designer, is the diversity in design that is the product of the varying climatic conditions, changing landscapes and cultural diversity that ‘is’ Australia. The way in which Building Designers respond to these elements leads to a built form that is both captivating and unique and takes a great deal of ingenuity.

The entrants consist of members of strong State/Territory-based Associations that cultivate design excellence and professional development within their membership. The projects belong to clients that have engaged with a Building Design professional who is an active member of their State/Territory association, the benefits of which are self-evident. Building Designers are a passionate group and need the support of an equally passionate National Association. The pages of this magazine are a celebration of what has come to pass over the last three years, as well as what the country’s Building Designers can look forward to with such a bright future for the Building Design industry nationally. A future that will be well supported by a progressive Association that will provide members with quality representation and continually work towards the advancement and promotion of the profession of Building Design. The NABD would like to thank our major partner James Hardie who have partnered with the NABD from its inception and have this year offered our members the opportunity to take part in an exclusive design competition. We also thank Ametalin and Weathertex for their ongoing support to help us showcase the commendable work of Australian Building Designers. Tasked with evaluating a multitude of high quality entries, this year’s judges have managed to evaluate all projects thoroughly to decide this years’ winners, including the winner of the very first James Hardie Dream Designer Competition. Thanks goes to all those involved for their valuable time and expertise. Great Building Design is a journey, and every journey begins with the first step. Make sure your first step is to engage with a great Building Design professional. Doing this will not only make the journey more enjoyable but will ensure the outcome is sensational!

Intelliscreens is an Australian company which has invested heavily into providing the market with a simple but extremely beautiful pleated screening solution for large openings.

The Intelliscreens system doesn’t rely on springs to retract, which makes them so easy and safe to operate for all ages.

Each year, demands on architects to provide bigger openings with designs that bring the indoors to the outdoors have proven difficult for the screening industry to keep up with. Intelliscreens has met this head on with their signature screen called “Slimline Panorama”.

The pleats in the mesh are one of the features that safeguard the screen from walkthroughs. Although the fibres are much finer than the standard style spring retractable screen system, the design of the screen enables them to be completely visible, whilst letting the natural light in.

With the company’s yearly growth rate exceeding market average, it is expected to continue to grow with new products ready to be released into the market in the very near future.

Intelliscreens also has released a system called the “Duo Screen” which incorporates an insect screen by day and a dim-out screen by night to provide the home with elegance and privacy.

BEST INTEGRATED HOME 2016

Our Look & Listen family are firm believers that the integration and automation of technology in today’s homes and businesses is the way of the future. With our award winning integrated solutions, we strive to continually push the boundaries to achieve dynamic new technological standards for the modern home and workplace. Our objective is to work with you to create a personalised and unique vision of how integrated and automated solutions can enhance your lifestyle and working environment. To integrate technology for complete control, requires specialist skill. Bringing together lighting, climate, security, access control, entertainment, networking, energy management and automation technology is complex. But what we focus on for our clients, is that the control of their system is simple, reliable and easy to use.

We keep the implementation process as simple as possible throughout the build. This is of paramount importance to all of the team here. The key to making that happen is ensuring the process is thoroughly engineered, project managed and started during the design and planning phase of your project. We understand the importance combining true comfort with real sustainability and strive to achieve this whilst keeping the end result user friendly and within the guidelines outlined in each clients’ individual brief. The major stipulation within the client’s brief for this project was to create a home that “lives” the way his family does. He envisioned a unique, comfortable, sustainable and secure environment for all family members to gather and enjoy. High on the client’s list was security. Wanting to ensure that all family members and guests had easy and simple keyless access to the property at all times. Of additional importance was the inclusion of automated passive cooling, rain and flood sensor integration which delivers to this home a truly intelligent solution.

In August of this year, our project in Carina won the coveted Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association Asia Pacific award for Best Integrated Home. This project qualified us to represent Asia Pacific in the international awards in Dallas and we were extremely honoured to be awarded the title of Global Winner for the Best Integrated Home.

Keeping in mind that the home is a central hub for his daughters, nephews, nieces, wife and mother, we were able to ensure that the system was easy to use for all, whilst fully catering to every individual control aspect and end user requirement of the whole family. Working closely with architectural firms, we will always seek to compliment the chosen decor and architectural aesthetics of the property design and remain flexible to adapt to the changing requirements during any construction, renovation and/or installation process. Craig & Kirstie Samson, and all of the team at Look & Listen, expertly deliver thoughtful, integrated solutions that embody the vision of their clients and how they wish to optimise the technology within their homes and businesses.

Large expanses of glazing are carefully managed with large overhangs and window placements frame aspects of the estate for closer inspection. The durable and robust nature of the interior materials should facilitate many years of service and the natural palette of undressed stone and charred timber remain forever evocative of the Australian bush.

THE JAMES HARDIE DREAM DESIGNER COMPETITION 2016

Hex House DESIGNER: JORDAN WALKER, SPACE ODYSSEY DESIGN The entries in the NABD Hardie Dream Designer award showed that building designers are ready for building practices and designs to change. Their creative visions for small lot homes are innovative and inspirational. In the future we can expect breath-taking mixed material facades, flexible living spaces and self-sufficient homes. The winning entry takes a simple rectilinear form, referencing Swiss architect Le Corbusier and his modernist 1931 Villa Savoye, and juxtaposes it with two black Hexagon shapes using Hardie’s Scyon Axon cladding to create a fresh and futuristic “Hex House” which reclaims outdoor space with landscaped roof-top spaces.

Stuart Street DESIGNER: JANIK DALECKI PHONE: 0410 100 096 WEB: WWW.DALECKIDESIGN.COM.AU LOCATION: WA PHOTOGRAPHER: DION ROBESON An original 1940s workers cottage has been given a new lease on life. The character and charm has been retained and improved while the liveability has been boosted into a spacious light filled home suited to today’s lifestyle. The small site has been utilized well enabling outdoor living with a northerly aspect whilst retaining privacy. With a conservative budget the designer has achieved an amazing result to create a home to feel at home in, but more importantly has been respectful to the building, the streetscape and the cultural values of this area.

Agnes 4 DESIGNER: DIG DESIGN PHONE: (03) 9600 1133 WEB: WWW.DIGDESIGN.NET.AU BUILDER: L O’GRADY CONSTRUCTIONS LOCATION: DOCKLANDS, VIC PHOTOGRAPHER: RACHEL LEWIS PHOTOGRAPHY Transformation of an old dilapidated cottage into a contemporary Australian home. Clever use of light filled spaces and a Japanese based design perspective of less is more. Australian timber choices and lifestyle factors blended with simplified Japanese details resulted in a design that utilises space planning. Simple but effective, well thought out design, achieves its brief of molding cultures into a design that works in symbiosis with the existing. It is an outstanding example of clever design implemented well with all the small details working exceptionally as a whole.

Cathedral like vaults give it a very distinctive design and focus the views into the resort like rear yard. The two pavilions work in unison together breaking up the spaces into entertaining and lower more intimate areas. The added detailing of the dropped down vault for the outdoor area adds interest and focuses the view directly to the pool, which arcs around the resort like layout. Cabinetry, also reflects a resort like feel through materials sourced more in the tropics. This house and its distinctive style remain in the memory as one of the distinctive and standout buildings in this year’s awards.

Drainage Considerations for award winning building projects

T

he selection of quality drainage is crucial not only to the wellbeing and amenity of building occupants, but to the integrity and value of the building as a whole.

As one of Australia’s most respected drainage manufacturers and suppliers, Stormtech is committed to delivering the highest quality drainage solutions for today’s unique building projects.

Faced with the competitive challenges of today’s ultra-modern building designs, aging infrastructure and a litany of Building Code of Australia (BCA) requirements, architects and specifiers today must navigate a myriad of planning and regulatory hurdles.

The product range of Stormtech for residential and commercial applications includes Linear and tile insert drains, square floor wastes, threshold drains, vinyl clamps for the use of linear grates in a vinyl floor and for outdoor applications the unique special assembly and slot drain ranges.

Whilst the importance of meeting mandated compliance measures (such as BCA waterproofing standards AS-3740 & AS-4654) must not be discounted, it is crucial for any implemented solution to accord strictly with the unique built and natural landscaping features of the property. This includes provisions for adequate grading and a thorough understanding of drainage flow rates, particularly in areas prone to excessive downpours.

Stormtech’s skilled specialists work closely with specifiers, architects and builders to offer tailored drainage solutions, including bespoke drawings and plans for customised drainage designs for all Australian environments.

Few could doubt that the selection and implementation of quality drainage solutions is key to the successful functioning and durability of the built area. With a bit of research and the right advice, you can ensure a reliable and consistent drainage solution that offers not only seamless installation options, but long-term cost benefits and maximal amenity for occupants.

Stormtech works proactively with plumbing advisory services to ensure drainage is not only fit for purpose, but meets stringent Building Code of Australia (BCA) compliance measures. Stormtech is also the only drainage company to have achieved GreenTag certification and to have collaborated with designers such as Marc Newson to provide genuine ‘designer’ products, won the Good Design Selection multiple times, and have also won the prestigious ICFF Editors Choice Award for product of the year in New York.
