When great design meets a renewable material – the results can be sustainable The Australian Timber Design Awards, now in their 15th year, are an opportunity for design and building professionals to showcase the best in Australian timber design and construction. This year we are proud to announce that Planet Ark’s Make it Wood Campaign were the new sponsors of the Sustainability Award for the entry that makes best use of sustainable design principles. Representatives from Planet Ark assisted the other judges in choosing a winner for this very competitive Award.
As I wrote this article, I read that the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress in Durban has unanimously adopted a motion presented by Australian Institute of Architects CEO David Parken, ‘2050 Imperative’, committing to environmental and social sustainability. The declaration recognises that it is estimated that in the next twenty years an area equal to some 60% of the world’s total building stock will be built or rebuilt in urban areas.
Over the years we have not only witnessed an increase in the number of entries, but also the quality of entries, as I am sure our many judges would attest. I would like to think that this reflects both the increasing profile of the Awards and the growing use of wood and wood products in our built environment. Globally, the use of timber seems to be increasing, a trend that can be attributed to factors ranging from fashion to form and function.
It then states: “Our responsibility is to influence ethical and socially responsible development throughout the world: to plan and design sustainable, resilient, carbonneutral and healthy built environments that protect and enhance natural resources and wildlife habitats, provide clean air and water, generate on-site renewable energy, and advance more liveable buildings and communities.”
The most important long-term drivers are the benefits that wood and wood products bring to the economic and environmental sustainability of a project. Wood is our only renewable large scale building material and is capable of making an important contribution to the sustainability of our built environment. Recent research conducted by Forest and Wood Products Australia Ltd (FWPA) among people involved in the specification of building materials indicated that wood is more than three times as likely to be associated with environmental sustainability than other mainstream building materials.
This is an opportunity and a challenge for both the design and construction and forest and wood products industries, with all parties having much to contribute and to gain by working together. One of our key activities is the WoodSolutions program and FWPA is proud to be associated with the Australian Timber Design Awards and excited to be part of the growing future of responsibly sourced timber in Australia.
The same research ranked wood as leading other materials in value for money, both as a material and in installation. This is an area in which I hope wood will improve even further, as the design and construction industry and the wood products industry continue to develop a better understanding of each other’s needs and create more efficient solutions to meet them. Wood also ranked first in ‘ease of use’, ‘off the shelf solutions’ and ‘Australian made’ in the research report. In aggregate this suggests that wood and wood products are well positioned to meet the evolving demands of the design and construction industries. Today, in Melbourne’s Parkville a five-storey timber framed apartment building is nearing completion, using an innovative prefabricated cassette timber flooring system. The system was developed as a joint venture between the developer/builder and companies in the timber industry in the remarkably short time of approximately six months.

JUDGING
Judging Process Entries are judged on outstanding timber use, appearance, workmanship, structure and innovation. Judges are looking, in particular, for contextsuitable use of timber. Well-considered design and construction with timber will distinguish an entry. With such a broad range of categories on offer, there is scope for recognition of a variety of applications. Each entry category is judged independently. This is an important feature of the Australian Timber Design Awards: a winning project may excel in a range of distinct areas. It is important for entries to be comprehensive but concise – judges will refer to written statements, drawings, and detailed photographs, where appropriate, in order to distinguish a winner. As such, entrants must consider whether their project is suitable for the categories into which it is entered. Entries should display examples of outstanding design in the relevant areas and include a description of the use of timber in each project.
Selection of Judges Each year the judging panel comprises an architect, an engineer, an academic and a builder. The judging is presided over by a timber industry member. This broad representation across professions ensures that winners are chosen that excel in all aspects of design. This also ensures that winners use timber appropriately, expertly and in a way which enhances the timber industry, and timber design in general.

ABOUT THE JUDGES
James Fitzpatrick James Fitzpatrick is Managing Partner and Head of Design at fitzpatrick+partners (F+P) architects. Studying architecture in Tasmania before moving to Sydney to study at NIDA, he undertook periods of work experience in the USA and Japan before founding F+P in 2000. F+P are now considered one of Australia’s leading commercial architecture practices. In the last four years F+P has undertaken research into Offsite Prefabricated Assemblies (OPAs). This research has targeted the study of large scale timber construction for mid and high rise projects, and the use of CLT floor and wall systems in large scale commercial and residential architecture.
Professor Keith Crews Keith Crews is Associate Dean (External Engagement) and Professor of Structural Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology, University of Technology, Sydney. He is an internationally recognised expert in the area of Sustainable Infrastructure, particularly in bridge safety, structural assessment, and timber engineering for non-residential buildings and physical infrastructure. Keith is an active member of 5 SAA code committees and numerous international technical groups. He is Editor for the Construction and Building Materials Journal, has published extensively, and has received numerous awards for research. In 2009 he was the recipient of the IEAust Structural College Eminent Speaker award.
Richard Brisland Richard Brisland has 45 years experience in the construction industry, working in UK, Middle East, and Australia. He has held positions as Director, CEO, Business Manager, and Project Director/Manager with a number of well-known construction companies in Australia. In 2011 Richard commenced a Project Managing consultancy focusing on the introduction of new timber products into multistorey structures. Richard's projects have won numerous awards including MBA Excellence in Construction Awards, Premier’s Award, Lloyd Rees Award, and the International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture for Paddington Reservoir Gardens.
Kate St James Kate St James, FDIA is an interior designer and the editor-in-chief of Grand Designs Australia, Home Design, Renovate, and several additional leading Australian home design titles at Universal Magazines. Kate's design career has spanned three decades both in interior design and journalism, both here and abroad. She has held roles as president of the Australian Architecture Association, board member of the NSW Architects Registration Board and is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, Kate actively supports and promotes the design industry and encourages students and emerging designers.
Sustainability Award – Additional Judges For the first time this year, Planet Ark’s ‘Make It Wood’ campaign sponsored the Sustainability Award and assisted in the judging. This award recognises overall environmental outcomes like energy and water efficiency, native plantings and waste reduction as well as measures that ensure a sustainable building through the use of wood. The Dandenong Mental Health Facility represents a revolution in the style of building for acute mental health accommodation. It provides a noninstitutional, sensory experience of the internal and external environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Timber was selected to provide warmth, texture, and tactility. It is a low cost, high value, sustainable product that has intrinsic value to the health and wellbeing of people. The design was constructed in two stages and is based on a series of linked timber pavilions surrounding internal glazed courtyards. Apart from being visually striking, these pavilions also eliminate the need for tall security walls. The extensive use of natural timber internally and externally gives the buildings a residential, suburban character. Durability was of concern and so blackbutt timber was chosen for external cladding and exposed columns. This is hardy, low maintenance, and has begun to age gracefully.

Extending and reusing the existing 1960s building, this project was the development of Hindmarsh Council’s corporate offices into a new, iconic, and sustainably focused precinct. Inspired by the surrounding rural landscape of agricultural sheds and storage silos, the primary glulam timber structure was custom designed and manufactured from sustainably sourced Victorian ash combined with the sheet metal typical to the area’s wheat silos. The building is open and welcoming to the community and offers a light-filled, naturally ventilated, healthy work environment for staff. The interior palette of materials begins with raw timbers, steel, and polished concrete and transitions to a more colourful and vibrant working environment in the office spaces. Utilising the principles of the Green Star rating system, the facility features many bespoke sustainable design items, including underground thermal chambers, energy efficient LED lighting systems, and solar panels, all while recycling over 80% of the existing building’s materials.

The decision to use timber throughout this self-contained retreat was influenced by the contorting Moonah trees onsite. Cabin 2 features timber in multiple, sensitively used forms, including renewably sourced hardwood external cladding, FSC Chain of Custody certified plywood lining, and prefabricated laminated timber beams. This minimises wastage and cost, while also providing the warmth and colour palette that timber naturally has. Details of the house were resolved to convey a structural and architectural honesty with exposed laminated beams and continuation of timber linings and finishes throughout. Rather than being an added treatment, the interior surfaces carry the inherent nature of their component through with them, pushing an agenda of integral function between the outside and inside of the building.

This project involved the refurbishment of a house that featured extensive existing Oregon roof beams, a pine ceiling and wall lining, but was hampered by a series of congested and dysfunctional split-level spaces. Central to the project was creating a durable material palette that both complemented and highlighted the existing timbers. Spotted gum flooring and decking was used to create a spatial continuity from the interior through to the outside. Top hung timber sliding doors now open each end of the space. A 4.5 metre long spotted gum island bench provides a visual and functional focus. A series of spotted gum stairs to a double height void redirect the circulation of the house. A carbonised bamboo plywood cabinet ties these features together visually, simultaneously providing storage, balustrades, display space, and seating.

The Dandenong Mental Health Facility is the largest of its kind in Victoria. The previous facility was a stigmatised entity characterised by an aging and lacklustre built environment, closed to the outside and anonymous in character. In constructing the new facility, timber was used to deinstitutionalise the hospital building and place it within a suburban context. The appearance of timber helps to change the public’s perception of the building from problematic to normal. Seven variations of timber cladding are used, each with its own texture and appearance, varying from ship lapped solid timber boards to vertical timber fins. This is another layer of texture and grain, giving variation to the buildings when viewed from a distance. The changes in texture accentuate and articulate the forms of the pavilions and also break up the scale of the buildings.

This is the first public building in Australia to be constructed from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and it showcases engineered timber as both a structural and architectural design element. It harnesses many of the sustainable characteristics of timber construction to benefit the project. European Spruce CLT and Glulam were used for the vast majority of the structure, cores, internal stairs, floor slabs, and roof. This use of engineered timber was selected for its significant weight reduction, enabling the building to be constructed at the water’s edge on an existing wharf structure. Since the CLT and Glulam elements were pre-manufactured and cut to size, including penetrations for services and core doors, this dramatically reduced waste onsite and overall. Also, based on the volume of CLT in the building, it is estimated that 250 tonnes of carbon are retained in the building.

Spiegel Haus is a thoughtfully crafted home in Sydney’s Inner West that celebrates the warmth, strength, and diversity of timber. The sculptural grey ironbark staircase sits at the very heart of this home, flowing out at each floor to help define the path of circulation. The warm, earthy tones of this staircase provides a counterpoint to the glossy black exterior tiles, mirrorlined void, and polished concrete floors. This contrast is also evident in the kitchen, where a blackened American oak veneer is used to give both a textural contrast to the smooth marble bench top. For durability, V-jointed pine lining boards replace the traditional plasterboard cladding for the walls and ceilings. Timber is also wonderfully tactile and has been used for many high use elements such as the kitchen doors, sliding doors and windows, and the stair balustrade.

The decision to use timber as the primary component of this fitout was influenced by two main factors. The first is in response to the existing heritage timber structure, which is composed of significant hardwood columns and beams, exposed herringbone ceiling joists and flooring. A clear decision was made to celebrate these elements and wholly expose them, ensuring that their beauty would be visible when experiencing the design. The second was to represent a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. This was achieved by inserting a series of blonde veneered plywood elements into the existing dark hardwood structure as the main architectural gesture of the design. The blonde veneered plywood elements include the floors, ceilings, joinery, and fixed furniture and create a clear dialogue between what is old and what is new.

The little Bicheno Surf Life Saving Club & Boathouse is not just a shed. It is a bold contemporary timber form placed like an abstract vessel careened on the edge of the quartz white sand of Waubs Bay, Tasmania. Serving as a historic beacon, the timber boathouse takes cues directly from the activities of the five remaining commercial cray fishing boats that operate out of Bicheno today, representing an activity that was once the mainstay of the coastal town’s economy. Timber battens are laid horizontally in a crafted pattern of alternating sizes with finger-jointed ends expressed at each corner. The design of the banded timber cladding suggests the form of handcrafted cray pots made by weaving thin natural timber strips into a delicate striation. There are no external finishes on this cladding for excellent durability and it will gain a subtle silver patina over time.

ARCHED EDGE CHEST
Inspired by the tangent of a curved tree trunk, the Arched Edge Chest of Drawers has been constructed using two timber species, predominantly ironbark timber retrieved from disused telegraph poles in New South Wales. The dovetailed drawers have been constructed using recycled mountain ash timber lining boards. The hand turned legs are recycled ironbark and fossilised red gum from the Murray River. The entire piece has been designed and constructed using as little hardware as possible in an attempt to highlight the versatility of timber and the skill and functionality of timber joinery techniques. The drawers, for example, use dovetail joints and slide on hand rebated timber drawer guides instead of steel drawer runners. The curved handgrips add to the organic simplicity of the design and do not detract from the front view of the chest, allowing the magnificent timber to be the star of this piece.

Library at the Dock fulfils a vision for environmental excellence and is Australia’s most sustainable public building. Setting new environmental standards, it is constructed primarily from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and recycled hardwood. The use of sustainably managed forest timber reduces the overall carbon impact of the building, as well as reducing carbon during construction. Based on the volume of CLT, it is estimated that 250 tonnes of carbon is retained in the building. No water was used during the structural works, representing a significant reduction against conventional techniques such as concrete manufacture and placement. As CLT is approximately 30% lighter than traditional structures, the building uses the existing wharf structure as its base, eliminating the need for a concrete or steel sub-structural system and associated demolition. Some ironbark columns and beams are reclaimed from a bridge in Queensland, while the promenade decking is constructed from locally sourced recycled hardwood.

A love of natural material is on display in this Blairgowrie dwelling and timber is at the heart of it. From the outset, the use of wood was specified in the brief as one of a number of ways to create a sophisticated home that is comfortable, fun, and durable. The central core of the dwelling has been lined to incorporate T&G Flooring into the wall plane. Other walls were clad in recycled plywood and stained black, with the same treatment on the hardwood window frames. Combining materials like stainless steel, mirror, and rammed earth with various timber species has contributed to the high level of design consideration and detailing of this project. The site was a challenging environment with its proximity to the back beach. The materials used are durable, but treated with the intention that they will silver and gracefully age with time.

House of Cupboards is a modest project that embodies the use of Australian hardwood timber. It is a flat pack, affordable house, where the timber design is an integral load-bearing part of the structure and informs the way the space works. Solid timber was used to create a grid pattern of structural cupboard sections. These timber cupboards were prefabricated in a workshop and utilise mortise and tenon joinery to be assembled easily and quickly onsite to save time and money. The external timber slatted screens and railing were also pre-fabricated to be assembled onsite as well. Using timber reduced the number of tradespeople necessary and as such reduced costs, as all works fell within a carpenter’s range of building skills. This project is a perfect example of how a natural material such as timber can be used in a new and innovative way on a tight budget.

The judges were so impressed with the level of timber innovation this year that for the first time they decided to create their own Award – the Judges’ Innovation Award. The innovation shown by three entries was particularly impressive and they were the finalists. David Bylund Architect’s Wespine Kiln Control Facility developed a hybridisation of a timber studs cross-laminated with an OSB structural panel to create a rigid, modular wall element. WilderCoyle’s House of Cupboards used solid timber to create structural cupboards that are integral to the load-bearing structure that support the buildings. The winner, Australand’s The Green, was selected due to the revolutionary panelised timber floor system. This ‘hybrid’ construction methodology combines commercial disciplines utilising a domestic trade base.

Constructed almost entirely from Australian certified timber, House of Cupboards is a celebration of natural material. 90% of the timber used on the project was bought directly from Blue Ridge Mill in Eden, New South Wales, which complies with Australian Forestry Standards. The other 10% was recycled timber to ensure complete sustainability. Although Australian timbers are often overlooked in the design industry because they are difficult to work with, this house meets the challenge to reveal the inherent beauty within. The timber cladding works harmoniously in the Australian bush setting, further emphasising the suitability of locally sourced materials. Using exposed external timbers means they will weather to grey over time, creating a low maintenance exterior that will eventually blend seamlessly into the landscape.

The Advanced Engineering Building delivers on the University of Queensland’s vision to create a building to celebrate, collaborate, create, learn, innovate, and sustain, all within an integrated engineering landscape. Timber is central to the vision of the building, which is designed to stimulate innovation, education, and awareness of advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The use of Glulam timber for structure and façade, produced and fabricated in Queensland, demonstrates how suitable it is as an alternative to steel and aluminium. Deep Tasmanian oak Glulam was used for the façade mullions to all other external windows, with aluminium framed IGU glazing fixed to the face of them. In the auditorium, loadbearing columns and vaulted roof trusses have been constructed using engineered mixed hardwood Glulam. These work together with feature columns to create a sense of flow to the boardroom and break out spaces.

Incorporating timber into projects like The Quays is a massive undertaking, considering sheer size of the building. Rather than surrender to the cold industrial surroundings, the appealing natural appearance of timber creates an inviting space inside and out. Engineered timber provided a sustainable and cost effective option for the project. It also contributed to the exterior aesthetic through external timber fins and as a faรงade cladding feature. As the building houses both residential and office space, timber flooring was used as a feature in large spaces to highlight specific areas and define the boundaries. An assortment of veneers express the design intent throughout the project, particularly the spotted gum panels in the boardroom. These introduce a degree of warmth and variety to the palette of materials, contrasting with the solid stone tiles and undulating geometry of the white crisp plaster seen elsewhere.

One of the sustainability objectives for the Advanced Engineering Building at the University of Queensland was about engaging with renewable resources and local industry on a large and meaningful scale. Recycled blackbutt timber was used extensively throughout the project, commencing at the main entry and along the floor of the atrium for 70 metres, directing students, staff, and the public along the walkway to the recycled timber flooring and feature acoustic ceiling within the auditorium. The use of the recycled timber is a complement to the surrounding concrete and glass, providing a tactile contrast and warmth to the public spaces. These three materials, equally balanced, offer legibility to the users by defining space and circulation. Being public areas, the materials chosen had to be robust. The confidence of stability and proven history with recycled timber only added to its appeal.

A holistic and sustainable multi-residential housing development, the success of The Commons lies largely in its inventive and pervasive use of Australian timbers. The building uses timber in a number of innovative and environmentally friendly ways, enriching the user experience with subdued, simple apartment interiors and novel architecture moments throughout. The Commons uses timber to its full capacity as external cladding, internal treatments, and structural framework. Timber cladding was selected for the south façade of the building for its low embodied energy and carbon sequestration. The remaining ironbark façade has no treatment or coating, relieving the system of future maintenance. Such a natural façade is a welcome aesthetic departure from the surrounding industrial context, visually softening the grittiness of the area. By employing a carefully curated variety of timber types and applications, the building provides a number of unique spaces that allow vibrant urban life to thrive.

The Doherty Institute project represents a partnership between Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne to create a world-class biomedical facility. Spread over 14 levels, collaborative spaces are provided for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning, as well as flexible, adaptable, and specialist research laboratories. Timber is used to distinguish different areas and one of the key ways this is employed throughout the building are the plywood panel ceilings. Employed in the three most prominent areas of the Institute, these feature ceilings serve to reinforce the importance of these areas and tie them together visually and experientially. The wavy forms and exposed grain provide a natural contras t to the sterility of the laboratories. By extending the feature ceiling to the exterior of the building at the tearoom and boardroom, it allows that spatial connection to be understood and appreciated by those not actively operating within the Institute.

Building like The Quays are massive, essentially housing the number of people found in a country town. Structural requirements mean that timber is often left out of these projects; however, the variation and individual characteristics of timber help humanise The Quays. Spotted gum veneers feature in the seating for the residents’ lounge and covered way, and for the wall panels in the boardroom. The timber battens for the residents’ lounge staircase are made of American oak veneers, while Tasmanian oak veneers adorn wall panels in the south and north towers. The variety of uses for timber veneer in the project highlights the value of using such a flexible material. Veneers have been used to accentuate entrances as a feature with bold finishes and also to complement private spaces with muter colour palettes.

Conceived as a mediator of land conditions, the Land House establishes two different ground connections, both living platforms divided by a core. A timber shelter is constructed around this core. The addition of lightweight timber rooms at the upper level softens the character of the building and prioritises the choice of materials from ground to sky, heavy to light. The large timber doors and shutters are constructed from western red cedar due to its weight, performance, cost, and aesthetic qualities. The cedar offers reduced movement and good durability. To maintain a consistency of materiality, the cladding was selected to match the door and shutter construction in cedar. The sense of enclosure of the upper rooms was important. The operable shutters allow the wall plane to be broken, bringing in light, views, and breezes. Alternatively, these wall elements can be shut, excluding heat, light, and wind in harsher weather.

BUILDER: STUDENTS OF ARCT5590 PHOTOGRAPHER: DAVID BYLUND Designed and built by architecture students for the City of Nedlands in Perth, Western Australia, this contemporary bus shelter demonstrates the growing interest in timber design and construction in architectural education. The City of Nedlands has one other timber bus shelter. Built in the 1950s, it is the last of its kind in the city and has become a firm community favourite. With the proposal to build and install a modern shelter, treated pine was the only material considered suitable. This is the sole material used in this project, seen in all panel, column, and flute elements, for the main seating element, and the roof structure. It was selected for its durability, warm appearance, and ease of use. The entire process has been an invaluable industry and academia collaborative effort, providing students with an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the construction process and the unique properties of timber.

HARDLAM HARDLAM is an exciting new veneer-based timber product developed by Forestry Tasmania and other industry partners; • HARDLAM is a sustainable value-added product, it utilises small-diameter low-grade logs that would otherwise be converted to woodchips. • HARDLAM is made from Tasmanian regrowth forest timbers resulting in a product of exceptional strength and beauty. • HARDLAM can be used as an alternative to solid wood in a range of applications including flooring, stair components and furniture. HARDLAM is a ‘designer log’ based on Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL). It is made from rotary peeled veneer; the individual veneers are assembled in a large block with the grain orientated along the length. COMING TO A FLOOR NEAR or UNDER YOU LOGGO is just a concept at the moment but on a daily basis we grow more excited about its imminent worldwide application – see website www.loggo.com.au It is a Tiger about to roar! And it is a broadly patented all-Australian Tiger with our two major products being Lamilogs and I-Logs. And so with LOGGO, instead of using traditional sawn timbers and other expensive engineered sawn products we have substituted WASTE PRODUCTS from the small diameter log market - tree tops or WASTED PEELER CORES from the ply industry or even purpose grown sustainable forests at a young age – AND from MULTIPLE species. Recent design engineering with very small diameters ( Peeler Core sizes) has shown very promising span results e.g.. QUADRILOGS consisting of 4 x 56mm dia. for application at 600mm centres as floor joists allow spans up to 3.6m in length. These would be suitable for the Australian market but are still subject to testing. The unique LOGGO concept gave life to this, the world’s newest, greenest, most cost effective framing system applicable to multiple applications including flooring and portal frame building systems. It is suitable for all types of construction – residential to two storey as well as the potential for multi-storey application with its floor framing system inside say CLT buildings. It lends itself to PREFABRICATION with the ability to manufacture off site modules for transport and then assembly into the larger matrix of the building. LOGGO has been designed with all the key attributes of costeffectiveness, durability, versatility, life expectancy as well as its inherent fire and earthquake resistance in mind. It derives its relative joint strength when compared with other traditional and engineered wood products because it utilises the inherent strength of the natural log – even in its ‘wasted’ small diameter natural state - by endgrain pinning within the bored out heartwood area along the central axis – and then by cross laminating with inexpensive small amounts of steel and glue. In summary LOGGO employs WASTE from renewable timber resources in a very low cost, minimal impact engineered timber

solution. And more recent patented developments just keep on getting more optimised – we are still a work in progress – see News on the website. The end result is a product with comparable structural properties to more high tech conventional glue laminated timbers without the associated environmental impacts and technical costs. So what does LOGGO mean to design? Well virtually any joint configuration by traditional sawn timbers can also be achieved with LOGGO. AND SO BY ILLUSTRATION: Image 1 of our 2011 prototype hybrid display shows the A Frame and floor profiles of the double Lamilog system which has been already surpassed by more optimal designs. Image 2 is a cut-away wall section which shows how the portal frame integrates in with the brick veneer system. Image 3 is a downscaled model representation of the newer Trilog LOGGO building system which we take to tradeshows. Working left to right (are all triplepinned): • the sloping Trilog is a rafter triple pinned down into the vertical stud • the vertical stud is engaged to its right by either a ceiling or floor joist • this joist ( ceiling or floor) then engages ( triple cross pinned) a bearer ( floor or as a top plate) in its neat in-plane jointing system Images 4 & 5 of a gazebo show some of the many possible multiple joint configurations that can be achieved. This single log system is also representative of the newer double, triple or even quad log systems made from Peeler Cores that we have developed.
