Welcome to Centre Region Parks & Recreation

W

elcome to SUMMER! We are very excited to be bringing back some of our traditional events this summer and offering new programs and activities after our long haul through the pandemic! Fingers crossed we all stay healthy and can enjoy activities together!

We held our first-ever Puzzlepalooza this past winter and what a hit it was!

Watch for another round of puzzles in the future! There are smiling faces behind those masks!

We'd like to welcome Ms. Erika Mann to our team; she joined us in March 2022 as the new Supervisor for the Centre Region Active Adult Center, l ocated in the Nittany Mall. She brings a wealth of experience and lots of creativity and new ideas that we think you're all going to love! Stop by the Center and introduce yourself and check out the updated facility and programming!

Our Parks Operations team is preparing for another busy summer in the community parks. We predict that the parks will be very busy again this summer, whether folks are geocaching, walking, playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee, throwing a round of Disc Golf, cycling through using the shared-used paths, or just enjoying the wonderful green spaces! Over 56 different municipal and regional parks along with state parks, state forests, and hundreds of miles of trails.

In the meantime, we, like all of you, continue to monitor community health, protocols, research and science, while planning for our summer operations. We wish you all good health and happiness this year and hope to see you in our parks, programs, or facilities this summer!

Summer Scientist: Science Builders Penn State graduate students from Chemistry and Architectural Engineering (AE) departments are teaming up to demonstrate concepts of both AE and Chem through an interactive demonstration at Circleville Park pavilion. Kids, elementary school-aged, encouraged to participate alongside their parent/guardian in an activity where they will re-invent gingerbread structures and explore the chemical properties of milk, and enjoy a tasty treat after! All the demo materials will be provided on-site, and further detailed instructions will be provided.

YOUTH INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES

Back by popular demand, Chemistry Graduate Students from Penn State are hosting free interactive science demos at Circleville Park! Elementary-aged children are encouraged to participate alongside their parent/guardian to learn and explore three, fun demonstrations led by the graduate student instructors. The demos will explore basic science concepts related to art and end with making ice cream using science!

All materials will be provided on-site and additional instructions will be provided if you want to explore the demos further at home. Registration is required to participate, and safety regulations are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please only register one person from your group of six or less.

Youth Instructional Classes This introductory program to juggling invites kids to participate in fun games and exercises while learning to juggle. They will develop skills like concentration, hand-eye coordination, and self-esteem while building a creative community. The exercises include group games, and coordination drills, to present different juggling techniques. Kids will come away with knowledge and skill in juggling as well as a set of handmade juggling balls. Jonatas Campelo has developed his multi-faceted juggling techniques over the past 10 years as a circus artist.

He started juggling in the streets of Brazil and studied with professionals throughout Latin America. He is excited to bring juggling to State College!

Youth Flag Football

This flag football league is for children going into grades 1st-7th, and is open to all skill levels with an emphasis on improving skills in a safe, competitive, player-focused environment.

The league is committed to providing a positive football experience in a safety-first program through USA Football’s “Heads Up” Football Program. All coaches will be trained in “Heads Up” Football procedures and will be required to complete a Coaching Certification through USA Football. The league will also have USA Football certified Player Safety Coaches that Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Sundays, are trained to ensure that “Heads Up” safety protocols are August 16-October 30 respected. Practices will begin in mid-August at Spring Rising 1st & 2nd Graders (5-9 yrs.)

Creek Park, then all practices and games will move to Oak Rising 3rd & 4th Graders (8-11 yrs.)

Start Smart Football prepares children and their parents for organized football without the threat of competition or the fear of injury. Learn to Play Pickleball Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court or with a slightly modified tennis net. Participants use a paddle and a plastic ball with holes and the game can be played as doubles or singles. Join members of the local Pickleball League for basic instruction and lots of fun!

Adult Sports and Leagues Summer Tennis League

The league is designed to provide play for people with busy schedules. You will receive a season schedule and have one week to play each match. Matches can be played at any tennis court on the day/time that works best for the scheduled players/teams. Each person that registers will be provided with one can of new tennis balls, which can be picked up at the Agency. Balls will be provided for the season-ending tournament as well.

Dates: Regular season will run June 13 through August 21. Optional season-ending tournament will be Saturday, August 27.

To register: You can register for the singles, doubles, or mixed doubles sections, but you may only register for one division. (e.g. You cannot register for singles in both recreational and intermediate divisions.)

For doubles, only one person from a team needs to register for the team players. If you don’t have a partner, please use the program.

Is your racquet re-strung and ready for play? Are you ready to join us for tennis this summer? Join us for the Intramural Tennis League and you’ll be playing all summer long. A new format is in place this year. Three divisions are available to include: • Recreational - This division is for newer players who want to improve their match play and tennis skills including hitting accuracy, speed on the court, and serving. Score will be kept during play, but reporting will be optional in this division for each individual/team. (This division would be comparable to players who are around levels 2.5-3 on the USTA rating system.)

• Intermediate - This division is for players who want to play competitively, but who may still be working on hitting accuracy and improving serves. Players in this division are fairly consistent, with moderate ball control. (This division would be comparable to players who are around levels 3-3.5 on the USTA rating system.)

• Competitive - This division is for players who have played tennis in the past competitively. Players in this division generally have directional control over the ball and are able to utilize different types of strokes during match play.

(This division would be comparable to players who are level 4+ on the USTA rating system.)

Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta Build your own boat, and race it at Welch Pool! Boats must be made from cardboard, paperboard, and duct tape ONLY (colored duct tape is OK). Boats may be a maximum of 7' long and 4' wide.

Paddles/propulsion must also be homemade using the same materials (or use your hands/feet). Race course will be one length of the pool (25 yards). Racers will be divided by division and category and may be separated into heats.

Aquatics continued Bubble Makers Youth SCUBA

Seal Team Youth SCUBA

Bubblemaker is as fun as it sounds--a chance for kids to blow bubbles by scuba diving! Children who are at least 8 years old can use scuba gear to breathe and swim underwater in the shallow part of the pool. In the Bubblemaker program, participants get a basic introduction to how to use scuba gear, how to clear a regulator and mask, and an overview of underwater breathing do’s and don’ts.

The Bubblemaker Crew-Pak (included with registration) contains mementos of the experience and is full of fun surprises, such as a kid-sized beach towel, logbook, certificate, temporary tattoo, decal and the adorable and popular Bubblemaker water toy.

The PADI Seal Team is for young scuba divers who are looking for action-packed fun in a pool by completing exciting AquaMissions. PADI Seal Team includes doing some cool stuff in the pool, meeting friends and sharing in the adventure of the underwater world. To join the PADI Seal Team, a child must be 8 years of age or older. AquaMissions 1-5, cover basic scuba diving skills, such as breathing underwater, clearing a mask of water, recovering a regulator and swimming around while experiencing the sensation of being weightless.

Each in-water session takes about an hour. After the diver complete these AquaMissions they will become a recognized PADI Seal Team Member. Your experience may also count toward the PADI Open Water Diver course when you’re old enough to participate in the course.

Active Adult Center Health & Fitness Classes Healthy Steps

This on-going program is designed to improve balance, flexibility, strength and reduce the risk of falling. All equipment is provided. This class uses exercise bands, foam balls, and hand-held weights. Exercises are done in a chair or standing. HIIT Fitness (Live Online) HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. For this class, we will be using a 50 second intense period followed by 10 second rest period. The class is a 4x5 meaning four different intervals repeated five times. You will need a set of hand weights, a mat, and a chair (sometimes). This class is live-online through Zoom. The mission of the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority is to serve Centre Region residents of all ages throughout the year with a variety of recreation opportunities and access to facilities to enrich their lives through participation in programs, facility use, provision of leadership resources and technical assistance, and serving the participating municipalities' residents and groups.

The Authority membership includes five municipalities--the Borough of State College and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris, and Patton, and the State College Area School District. Each municipality appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term, plus one representative from the State College Area School District who is appointed by State College Borough Council. In October 2011, the five participating municipalities re-authorized the future of the Authority for January 2012 through December 2061.

Many members of the Authority also participate in their municipality's Parks and Recreation Committee; this dual service provides a great conduit between the Authority/Agency and the municipality like Capital Improvement Projects, timelines of various park improvements, recommended programming for the community, policies and procedures, and more.

The Authority is a registered 501c3 non-profit and registered as a PA Bureau of Charitable Giving organization.
