[NEW SITES TO VISIT ] Easy access to prehistory: the global capital of prehistory Les Eyzies-de-Tayac visitor centre Perfectly integrated into the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, the global capital of prehistory located at the heart of Périgord Noir in Dordogne, the surprisingly modern Pôle International de la Préhistoire (PIP) visitor centre is located in the Vézère Valley, known as the “Valley of Man” and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is the ideal starting point for discovering countless major prehistoric sites: the Grotte de Font-de-Gaume, Grotte des Combarelles, Abri Pataud, Abri du Poisson, Musée National de la Préhistoire, Grotte de Lascaux… Designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences and a veritable “entrance” to a better understanding of human origins, it is both a visitor centre and a tourist information centre (Vézère Valley - Prehistory area) brought to life with murals which clearly display the life of the Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals, 3D models with touch screens, an information centre (reading room and internet access: over 2,000 books available to consult), an educational area offering an introduction to archaeology for both school children and the general public (educational workshops available by reservation: reconstruction of an archaeological site, workshops on archaeological sciences) and a site for hosting seminars with a 230-seat lecture theatre. Temporary exhibitions are also organised in a dedicated area, where an interactive prehistory discovery exhibition allowing you to experience the magic of the creations of our ancestors in the dark, is currently on display.

NEWS from AQUITAINE pro.tourisme-aquitaine.fr

Biarritz Océan, experience the ocean from “within” The ocean is an integral part of the identity of Aquitaine. Biarritz-Océan was born of a desire to increase awareness amongst the general public of the need to protect the oceans. It is based on three centres, two of which are aimed at the general public: the all-new Cité de l’Océan and the renovated Musée de la Mer. At the same time, a new scientific research centre for coastal protection and the development of marine ecosystems in Aquitaine has been created.

“La Cité de l’Océan” is going to make waves Designed by the New York architect Sten Holl in the shape of a wave, the Cité de l’Océan is located close to the beaches of Milady and Ilbarritz. As the architecture displays, the centre is based on the two concepts of “under the sky” and “under the sea”, opening onto a large open-air square, with the sea on the horizon. Three quarters of the building are located underground and are temperature controlled (auto-regulation). The building and its functionalities are entirely integrated into the surrounding landscape. This new fun scientific area devoted to the ocean will open its doors in June 2011. The centre has been designed with a young audience in mind, to offer an experience that is scientific, educational and fun (featuring interactive activities). You can learn how the

oceans appeared on land, what happens on the ocean bed and the fauna that live in the depths of the ocean... You can also step aboard a bathyscaphe (scuba diving apparatus) armed with Polaroid glasses to discover the Gouf de Capbreton and “descend” towards the bottom of the sea. The ocean is marked by tides, waves and currents and to fully appreciate them, you will enter a large tube (the wave) to experience the sensations of a surfer; a little further on and the visitor will experience life as a passenger aboard a boat in distress in the middle of a storm... You can also discover myths and legends surrounding the ocean: the Deluge, the Atlantis and the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.

“Le Musée de la Mer” doubles its surface Housed in an Art-Deco building built and inaugurated in 1933, the Musée de la Mer de Biarritz has doubled its surface area and is home to 50 new aquariums and thousands of different species. Its aim from the outset has been to provide information about marine life and species in the Bay of Biscay. The topography of local sea beds is reproduced in the aquariums and tribute is paid to the memory of the great whaling venture, as the inhabitants of Biarritz, like many inhabitants of Aquitaine, were once hardy seafarers and the North Atlantic right whale, now a highly endangered species, plays a key role in

its history. The museum boasts twenty aquariums displaying 150 species of fauna and flora found in the Bay of Biscay. With the renovation, the common theme between the original museum and the new buildings is the Gulf Stream, the famous ocean current which runs along the Aquitaine coast. The museum journey begins in the Bay of Biscay and follows the Gulf Stream to the Caribbean area (with twelve aquariums showcasing over 300 species and a lagoon measuring 11 metres in length). Continuing to follow the current, you will then pass the Cape Horn where you can discover the aquatic fauna of the Pacific Ocean (7 aquariums including a 1,500 m3 pool containing several species of sharks, rays, barracudas and various other schools of fish). The journey ends in Indonesia where you can marvel at the variety of multicoloured fish including the famous “clownfish”. The refurbished terrace continues to showcase the seals, the original stars of the museum who entertain both young and old during feeding time, between 10.30am and 5pm. Lastly, new experiences will also be on the agenda with a touch pool that is sure to fascinate the most inquisitive visitors. ■ Information and bookings

[ ECO-TOURISM ] Ternélia Les Bruyères holiday village receives European eco-label

Framissima Nature in Soustons: 2 labels to start the 2011 holidays

Located in the town of Carcans-Maubuisson in Gironde, the Ternélia Les Bruyères holiday village has been awarded the European eco-label, becoming the first holiday village in Aquitaine and the 5th holiday village in France to obtain this certification.

Barely a year after its opening, Framissima Nature holiday village in Soustons has received both a 5th star and French Green Key certification: an international environmental label for environmentallyfriendly tourist accommodation awarded by an independent panel.

After two years of hard work, the holiday village now satisfies the 29 essential criteria for receiving the label and has even exceeded the minimum required total by 10 points, proving how strong its commitment is.

These two awards reward the efforts made by the organisation to create a holiday environment that is at one with and highly respectful of nature, yet with all the comfort you require. From spatial planning to the construction of mobile homes using recyclable materials and the sustainable management of aquatic areas, Framissima Nature in the Landes is aptly and deservingly named.

[NEWS] Bayonne labelled a Town of Art and History

The Port d’Albret UCPA centre and Périgueux tourist office receive Tourisme & Handicaps labels

After Bordeaux, Oloron Sainte-Marie, Périgueux, Sarlat and Pays du Béarn des Gaves, it is now the turn of Bayonne to be labelled a “Town of Art and History” number 149 on the list of designated towns in France.

The “Tourisme & Handicaps” label is a guarantee of the quality of reception received by disabled persons. On the one hand, it develops a tourist offering accessible to all and on the other hand, it enables the identification and promotion of organisations which support the reception of the disabled.

According to the Towns of Art and History committee, the label “characterises districts, municipalities and /

-/" , groups of municipalities which are aware of the challenges represented by the appropriation of their architecture and heritage by their inhabitants, and are committed to an active approach to knowledge, conservation, reflection and support for architectural quality and living environment”.

Since 2003, the Port d’Albret UCPA centre specialising in surfing located in the Landes, has done everything in its power to respond to the disabled public in the best possible conditions, as it continues to grow and is eager for new experiences. The site is officially registered to cater for the four referenced disabilities: motor, visual, mental and auditory.

Already designated a Town of Art and History, Périgueux has now obtained the Tourisme & Handicap label for all four disabilities for its tourist office. The first 3-star tourist office in the Dordogne to receive the label, the Périgueux tourist office is equipped with special facilities for the reception of disabled people (for example, special layouts to cater for them) and is committed to implementing the necessary measures to ensure quality of reception for all disabled persons. ■ Information
