CHANGING BIG FOOT TIRES

The Beach Boys sang “my four-speed dual quad posi-traction 409”, a song about the Corvette engine capable of generating 1 hp per cubic inch. Queen produced “I’m in Love With My Car,” arguably the best cruising song of all time. A typical Friday night for me back in the ‘70s was cruising in my 1967 Thunderbird playing one eight-track after another listening to those lyrics that spoke to my soul: “The machine of a dream, Such a clean machine, With the pistons a pumpin’ And the hubcaps all gleam.”

Car songs and American car culture have a long and intertwined history. Numerous songs have been dedicated to cars, reflecting the fascination and passion that Americans have for automobiles. These songs speak to the joy of driving, the thrill of the open road, and the connection between cars and personal identity.

Car songs emerged as a distinct genre in the 1950s and 1960s, during the rise of rock and roll and the heyday of the American automobile industry. Many of these songs captured the youthful rebellion and the spirit of cruising. Top songs include “Maybellene” by Chuck Berry, “Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys, and “Route 66” by Nat King Cole. Car songs often celebrated the power, speed, and allure of cars and the status that came with horsepower.

Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and “Pink Cadillac” have kept me driving well past my destination, and though I’ll never brag about my vocal harmony, I can’t not sing along with Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is a Highway,” a seize-the-day anthem that I’ve played on repeat countless times.

Listening to music and driving along winding roads, you can’t help but feel a sense of freedom and escape from the demands of everyday life. The act of driving itself becomes a source of pleasure. Feeling the road beneath your tires and hearing the engine’s purr all add to the experience. I believe I’ll never get old as long as I keep doing this.

BACKWOODS BASH

In the summer of 2020, the Backwoods Car Club of Randolph found themselves in a tough spot after they had spent the previous winter preparing their home-built hot rods for Ohio’s unofficial car season. Without warning, the season which was normally filled with car shows, cruise-ins, and races had become void of all events. Determined to make the best of their summer, they decided to create their own gettogether. They called it the Backwoods Bash.

Hosted at founding club member Joshua Heeter’s shop, the concept was simple: a gathering of friends to celebrate their shared love for building, breaking, and fixing cars. No schedule, no trophies, no drama—just food, friends, a bonfire, and maybe some burnouts up the driveway.

The inaugural event was planned and executed within two weeks, resulting in a showing of around a dozen vehicles. It was a small start, but a start nonetheless. As such, they decided to host another Bash a month later. This time, the club cooked dozens of burgers and forty-eight chickens over an open fire and asked anyone planning to come to bring a side dish. Attendees were also welcome to camp overnight, and the second official Backwoods Bash garnered twice as many people.

The club hosted two more events in 2021 before making the decision to cut back to just one Bash per year. In 2022, a concrete pad was poured next to the shop to create a dedicated “burnout box” much like at the drag strip. Chains were added for additional safety--though spectators are still encouraged to remain outside the “safety tape” strung between some trees and a camper.

So what does a trip to the Backwoods Bash look like in 2023? An automotive fever dream! By noon, Heeter’s property is half full. By 2 p.m., it’s nearly impossible to find an empty spot in a jam-packed yard of traditional hot rods and customs,’60s and ‘70s street machines, boogie vans, lowriders, choppers, street bikes, tuners, lifted trucks, lowered trucks, and some vehicles that simply can’t be classified, like Brian Wolfe’s home-built hooptie that only slightly resembles the Model A it started life as.

Heeter’s shop space is cleared to make room for the potluck, door prizes, tire machine, and a single car rack in case anyone needs to bandage their ride back together after blowing the tires off. Behind the shop, local tattoo artist Alexander Barba can be found using a ratty ‘64 Impala as a canvas for graffiti art. This is a new tradition that began last year with a late model Mazda pickup and takes all afternoon for Barba to complete, mainly because his work space is engulfed in burnout smoke every few minutes.

For one day (and most of the night), one man’s backyard becomes a melting pot of car culture. The term “car” is used loosely for obvious reasons. The Backwoods Bash is where people from all walks of life enter as mostly strangers, but leave as friends. It’s a celebration of automotive counter culture that still manages to remain inclusive of all vehicle types, so long as they’re driven, not trailered there. Just don’t call it a car show.

CHANGING TIRES MONSTER TRUCK VERSION

When covering car shows, cruises, racing, or any other event, I’m always on the lookout for a potential hidden story. The Salem Super Cruise continues to grow each year, introducing new vendors, subevents, and locations throughout the city. And that’s definitely a positive development. Actually, it’s a fantastic one.

Due to prior commitments, I was only able to cover the Salem Cruise on Friday morning and early afternoon. As I arrived, the roosters were still crowing, and vehicles had already filled the main parking lot downtown. Standing at the corner of Pershing and Penn, I witnessed a massive tractortrailer car hauler making its way up Penn, the side street, towards me. The driver attempted to turn onto Pershing, but the space was too tight. After some back and forth, the driver managed to navigate the narrow corridor beside The Timberlanes. It was then evident that the entire rig was adorned with Big Foot graphics. For those unaware, Big Foot is a widely recognized monster truck.

Initially, I wondered why the Big Foot hauler was in this particular area off the main route. Then I realized that the Firestone Tire dealer was just two blocks away. Firestone happens to be one of the sponsors for this monster truck. The connection became apparent, and by now, the hauler had pulled up onto the sidewalk next to the Firestone dealer. I took a few shots and then headed back to see what was happening in the main cruise parking lot.

About twenty minutes later, I found myself at the other end of the cruise lot, much closer to the activity surrounding the Big Foot hauler. It appeared as though they were preparing to unload, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to investigate. Two individuals were attending to the rig, a man and a woman, both going about their tasks with a practiced rhythm. Inside the hauler, I caught a glimpse of Big Foot wearing its “traveling shoes.” It looked peculiar, but it wasn’t my first encounter with this sight.

Monster truck tires measure sixty-six inches in height and forty-three inches in width. A single tire, without the rim, can weigh anywhere from 800 to 900 pounds. When multiplied by four, the tires account for

approximately a third of the average 10,000-pound weight of a monster truck. This is why slim tires are necessary for the truck to fit inside the hauler during travel. A team can go through as many as eight tires in a single year, with each tire costing between $2,500 and $7,500.

The Firestone parking lot was cleared to make space for the display, which was sure to attract hundreds of viewers over the course of the three-day cruise. As things quieted down, I noticed a ladder near one of the smaller doors on the hauler. Before long, the man emerged from the hauler, climbing down the ladder. He positioned himself in the middle of the road, just moments before one of those enormous monster truck tires came bouncing out of the hauler. Although I failed to capture the height of the rebound, that tire and wheel bounced more than two feet above the man’s head! It bounced three or four times while he struggled to gain control of the chaotic situation.

I was impressed by how quickly he managed to rein in the rogue tire and promptly rolled it over to the parking lot. He stood it upright in a spot that seemed peculiar until the second and third tires were balanced and standing on their own in their designated spots.

Once the tires were secure, Big Foot roared to life and backed out of the hauler. It was at this point that I realized it was the woman who had been inside the hauler, handling those tires with ease and tossing them out through the side door!

The transformation of Big Foot from its traveling shoes to its competition version didn’t take very long. Shortly after, I headed down to Donnell Ford to explore the ongoing show before making my way back home.

Now, does anyone wonder how those tires and wheels find their way back into the hauler? I certainly do! It’s been a week, and I’ve found myself pondering that process in greater detail. Anyone up for a tire change?

So, there you have it, the story within the story, or as I like to call it, the truck within the truck, that sets my mind twisting and turning!

This is my 1974 Chevrolet Chevelle pulling a 1963 Scotty Camper. I’ve brought them on 7 Hot Rod Power Tours and restored the Chevelle in 2003, and the Camper restored in 2014. I am the 3rd owner of Chevelle, and the 2nd owner of the camper. I’m involved in 2 charities, Toys For Tots and Littlest Heroes.

Joe’s 1976 Monte Carlo

This was my grandpas 1976 Monte Carlo he bought brand new. It has the original 400 small block Chevy with the turbo 350 trans. Has only 87,452 miles on it and he drove and drag raced as well. In 1998 he handed it over to my dad due to him getting early stages of Alzheimer’s so it was parked at my dads in his garage from 1998 til 2015 when I ended up with it. I put a new fuel pump and a battery as well some new tires on it and some new rear bumper fillers. It took me and my dad and brother in law 6 hours of wet sanding and buffing to get it to shine again. I’ve ran it in the good guys nationals in Columbus Ohio in 2018 at national trail raceway running 16.49 in the quarter mile. I take it to as many shows as possible in memory of both my grandparents who owned the car as well as my wife’s dad who passed away in 2014. Every show I go to I dedicate it to my grandpa and grandma ruble who loved this car dearly. I call it ol monte because that’s what my grand pa called it.
