The history of the Cadillac emblem stretches back over 300 years, steeped in legacy and legend. To uncover the origins of this iconic logo, it is necessary to understand the story of the company’s namesake, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701. His coat of arms, rich with symbolism, became the foundation for Cadillac’s emblem.
The original coat of arms, which inspired the emblem, was split into two key elements: a coat and a shield. The crown, or Couronne, symbolizes France’s six ancient courts, while the pearls denote royal descent from Toulouse. The shield, a testament to the noble family’s brave origins, takes its shape from the warrior shields of old. Divided into four quarters, the first and fourth sections depict the arms of the mother’s family, with merlettes (legless, beakless birds resembling martins) signifying their lineage. The crown and merlettes have since been omitted from the modern crest.
Each redesign of the Cadillac emblem has carried forward a piece of this rich history, maintaining a connection to its noble and adventurous origins. The crest’s enduring presence on Cadillac vehicles today continues to tell a tale of legacy, valor, and elegance, bridging centuries of history with the modern road.

As we approach the end of our second season under the new ownership, we are grateful for the continued support from our advertisers, subscribers, and the automotive community. Your loyalty and enthusiasm have been motivating.
We are excited to share that the magazine is successfully evolving in the digital space, with over 14,000 digital subscribers. Our print circulation remains steady at 3,500 issues. While we are committed to maintaining the legacy of the printed and mailed magazine, we must depend on the financial support required from our subscribers and advertisers to sustain it.
The rising costs of paper, printing, ink, and postage have led us to a pivotal decision. Currently, each issue costs us over $5.30 to produce, yet we charge only $3.33 per magazine, up from $2.50 last year. To break even at today’s costs, the price would need to be $6.00 per issue, which we feel is unsustainable. Therefore, after careful consideration, our partners have agreed on the following changes:
1. Starting November 1, 2024, we will temporarily pause printing until the March 2025 issue.
2. If you have purchased a 12-month subscription, you will still receive 12 print issues.
3. Cruisin Times Magazine will continue as a monthly publication, but it will be digital-only from November to February.
4. The new subscription package will be $40 for 8 editions* in print & digital and 12 digital only editions.

GATHERING IN THE GRAPES
Mastropietro Winery has been the hosting site for the Gathering In The Grapes Car Show for as long as I can remember. The location is perfect being out in the farm country of Berlin Center.
This is an annual cruise where the grounds are extremely well groomed, and you are surrounded by rows of grape vines. There were several food vendors to go along with the Mastropietro offerings. A gazebo and tent provided comfortable places to enjoy your meal or just to relax. This was a particularly hot, sunny day and some of the cruisers brought out their own canopies to use as a respite from the sun.
The New Hope United Methodist Church of Niles, OH is the show’s host and their youth program is the beneficiary of any monies made at the cruise. Show organizer, Jo McElhaney, has been doing this program since its inception and, with abundant volunteers, keeps everything running smoothly.
The turnout was excellent, and I vehicles were parked in new spots on the winery grounds. As usual, it included a nice mix of vehicles that encouraged investigation by the attendees. DJ Crazy Dave was filling the air with oldies tunes. The trophies were quite unique as has become a tradition for this show.

Another pavilion and tent were set up for the vendors to display their wares. Candles, soaps and bath bombs, wood products, Mary Kay, Thirty One, Papparitzi, Scentsy and Cricut on vinyl made up an eclectic variety of products and services.
There are a few places at Mastropietro Winery that you can, if you listen very carefully, almost hear the grapes grow. You will have to discover those hidden spots on your own. I am not giving away secrets!
So, until the 2024 show, this will be a wrap. Put this one on your schedule!

PAINESVILLE FRIDAY NIGHT CRUISE
I am always on the lookout for automotive events to photograph with backgrounds that complement the vehicles. Painesville was suggested to me and proved to be an excellent location. The Lake Erie coastline has multiple towns with historical architecture that fit well into my vision.
The DPO Downtown Painesville Organization connects with automotive aficionados for their Friday night events. This is a charming city in Lake County, Ohio, where you can discover the history and culture along the peaceful Grand River. The proximity to Lake Erie provides the town with warm days but muggy nights.
Although Painesville is included in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area, the village attained city status in 1902. General Edward Paine (1746–1841), a native of Bolton, Connecticut, who had served as a captain in the Connecticut militia during the war, and John Walworth arrived in 1800 with a party of sixty-six settlers, among the first in the Western Reserve. General Paine later represented the region in the territorial legislature of the Northwest Territory.
In what was to become the commercial center of the township was a settlement called Oak Openings, its name being descriptive of the scrub oaks and sandy soil. It was here in 1805 that Gen. Henry Champion laid out a village plat and called it Champion, a name that it carried only until incorporation in 1832, when the name “Painesville” was chosen in honor of General Paine. The trees and the shade they provide along with a huge, well-manicured grass surface make it ideal for cruising.
Painesville’s famous Car Cruise is every Friday on the Square in Downtown Painesville! Veteran’s Park is open for cruising from 5-8 PM (VEHICLES can ENTER at 4:00pm). They have music, 50/50 raffle, commemorative t-shirts, Grill on the Hill (hosted by Painesville United Methodist Church), and the East Coast Original Frozen Custard truck. There are Free t shirts for Veterans--bring your ID. Maybe I will see you there! I do like this location!

OCTANE NIGHTS CRUISE – STILL GROWING

This event seems to expand beyond the posted hours and distances about every year. And a few more blocks of East Main St are, almost mysteriously, added at both almost ends each year. When the event began under the tutelage of late founder Gary Krause, it was anchored on the east by Mongoose Motorsports, Portage Trim and Pizza Hut at the top of the hill. Down at the west end and the bottom of the hill, A&W Root Beer was the established boundary. In 2023, the A&W boundary was extended further toward the center of downtown. At the other end it was extended to include the business areas Eastward to the Rt 14 intersection.
One of the unique features is the that the city of Ravenna closes this five-lane road starting at 3:00 PM. But the cruisers who are searching for the most “strategic” parking spaces begin arriving in the morning hours. Once the street is closed to through-traffic, the gearheads shift their rides to diagonal parking on both sides of the avenue allowing for additional streetside spots. There are also ample parking lots on both sides of the street.
Once the party begins, the crowd builds very rapidly. I often hear folks saying, “This is too much!” But I am not sure if they are agonizing over the dilemma that there is more than they can imagine seeing in one evening or if they are referencing just how spectacular the show they are attending is. Either way, this one is a winner for sure. This event continues to be one of those “Can’t Miss” shows. East Main Street is sometimes referred to as Ravenna’s most exciting half-mile. This stretch of pavement wears that nickname very well.

Shiny paint, chrome and horsepower are everywhere! Remember, this is a rain or shine show. So, don’t let that issue hold you back from attending. This is a perfect place for checking out the amazing vehicles, looking for new build ideas, catching up with old friends and making new ones. Car clubs and smaller groups often pull in together and can park in the same areas.
At 7:00PM the Ravenna Rumble takes place as the hot rodders fire up (open exhausts) for a brief display of horsepower. ... Vroom - Vroom! ... It may not be a cackle fest, but it is pretty kool. You know that feeling! Muscle cars, rods, customs, Corvettes, trucks, and classics and even tractors, a large display of Semi Trucks and a maybe funny car make up a great mix of vehicles.
I’d have to estimate the spectator count to be “FULL” since an accurate number is always far beyond my capability. The car count has been estimated at 1500 and higher along with a spectator count between 5000 and 10,000 in previous years. So, your guess would be, at least, as good as mine. There are several restaurants along Main Street and they do an excellent job of providing food and beverage to the crowd.
Be sure to let the event sponsors and advertisers know you appreciate their efforts. Likewise, this show relies heavily on their volunteers. Perhaps a quick thank you will help bring them back for the following year.
