From Steel to Screens: The Story of the Car Dashboard There was a time when car dashboards were more art than technology. Picture the 1950s: a painted steel dash, chrome trim, and simple round gauges deeply set like watch faces. You’d twist a heavy Bakelite knob to tune the radio, hearing it hum to life, and toggle switches that clicked with satisfying precision. These dashboards had style, matching the car’s exterior with colors that popped—turquoise, cream, or fire-engine red. They were simple, beautiful, and by today’s standards, dangerous. In a collision, that unpadded steel became a lethal surface. By the late 1960s, padded dashboards started appearing, thanks to safety concerns. The charm remained, but safety began to reshape design. Then came the 21st century and everything changed. Today, dashboards are dominated by screens. Gleaming glass panels display everything: speed, GPS maps, music controls, and fuel economy. Touch-sensitive buttons replaced knobs and voice commands replaced clicks. Dashboards are now safe, functional, and futuristic—but they’ve lost the tactile charm. The old dashboards were alive, their hums and clicks part of the driving experience. Modern ones, while sleek and smart, can feel sterile like a wall of technology between driver and road. There is no denying today’s dashboards are marvels of safety and innovation. But sometimes, when you see a vintage dash with its chrome-rimmed gauges and painted steel, you can’t help but smile. In between raindrops, I headed out to Hartville to check out the 25 year celebration with Customs Unlimited of Ohio & owner Jim Palosi. There was a lineup of rides outside and a packed house of underconstruction vehicles inside. Here are a few images from the outdoor activity. Congrats to Jim and His crew on reaching the 25-year milestone and for building the top quality rides you are known for. I stopped by Maize Valley on my way home for a Grilled Rueben and a Vanilla Porter. The rain picked up on the way and I spotted Farmer Bill & Bernice heading down the highway! Bill had a coat over his head to protect himself from the downpour. Bernice was totally unprotected!!! LOL! Great outing

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is the same weekend as the Detroit Autorama. I’d encourage gearheads from all disciplines to attend a Concours Event at least once in their lives. They do take place all around the country including the Midwest. Maybe check their schedule out: https://carcollectorsclub. com/concours-delegance-calendar/ On Friday crews were busy setting up displays in prepping for the Sunday Show Field. Early in the morning, many owners brought their cars out for the Reliable Carriers Eight Flags Road Tour. RM Sotheby’s Auction Preview was happening both in the Ballroom and out on the Ocean Front Lawn. There was surely a bunch of gorgeous rides to check out. The Show Field on Sunday was mind boggling! If you think concours events are just high-end luxury classics, you couldn’t be more wrong. Legendary race cars from all disciplines, hot rods, muscle cars and American production from the 50s-60s may be found. Chip Ganassi had a display with six of his race cars. Each event is different! Plus, the Florida weather in early March is pretty nice but these shows take place all over the country including the Midwest. Note - (Images are from 2022)

TWELVE HOURS OF SEBRING Photos & Words by Joe Secka

I’m not sure how much interest there is IMSA/WEC racing here. Look - don’t look - go get a coffee - or whatever! Anyway, it was a very interesting four days for me. For those who are not familiar with this event, the IMSA Weather Tech Championship race begins at 10:40 AM and goes until 10:40 PM. It is certainly as much about endurance as it is about speed. I’ve been to a few Twelve Hours of Sebring and it definitely is some exciting, hi-tech racing. Sebring International Raceway ran its first race in 1950 and is currently a 3.74 mile road course located in Central Florida. It is one of the country’s most active racing facilities attracting more than 175 individual events on more than 250 days each year. These images are from the 2022 event.
