The Station Wagon
For over 40 years, the station wagon defined the suburban, middle-class family in America. These versatile family vehicles were originally designed to transport people and luggage between train stations and hotels—hence the "station" in station wagon. The earliest station wagons were built around 1910 by independent manufacturers who attached wooden bodies to Ford Model T chassis.
As America entered the 1940s and the baby boom began, the need for practical vehicles that could transport both children and belongings in one trip skyrocketed, making the station wagon the ideal family car.
The evolution of the station wagon took a significant turn with the introduction of the first factory-built, all-steel station wagon in 1946: the Jeep Station Wagon, produced by Willys-Overland. This was followed closely by the 1949 Plymouth Suburban, which also featured an all-steel body. The shift to all-steel construction made station wagons easier to manufacture, more affordable, and increasingly popular. By the 1950s, station wagons accounted for 17% of all car sales in the United States. They came in various sizes—compact, mid-size, and full- size—offering different configurations for the rear door, which could open upward, downward, or to the side.
The station wagon’s popularity began to wane in the 1970s. As minivans, SUVs, and crossovers entered the market, they gradually replaced the station wagon as the go-to family vehicle.
While the station wagon no longer dominates American roadways, its impact on automotive history and the development of family vehicles is undeniable. The station wagon laid the groundwork for the versatile, family-oriented vehicles that followed. …bob

As we approach the end of our second season under the new ownership, we are grateful for the continued support from our advertisers, subscribers, and the automotive community. Your loyalty and enthusiasm have been motivating.
We are excited to share that the magazine is successfully evolving in the digital space, with over 14,000 digital subscribers. Our print circulation remains steady at 3,500 issues. While we are committed to maintaining the legacy of the printed and mailed magazine, we must depend on the financial support required from our subscribers and advertisers to sustain it.
The rising costs of paper, printing, ink, and postage have led us to a pivotal decision. Currently, each issue costs us over $5.30 to produce, yet we charge only $3.33 per magazine, up from $2.50 last year. To break even at today’s costs, the price would need to be $6.00 per issue, which we feel is unsustainable. Therefore, after careful consideration, our partners have agreed on the following changes:
1. Starting November 1, 2024, we will temporarily pause printing until the March 2025 issue.
2. If you have purchased a 12-month subscription, you will still receive 12 print issues.
3. Cruisin Times Magazine will continue as a monthly publication, but it will be digital-only from November to February.
4. The new subscription package will be $40 for 8 editions* in print & digital and 12 digital only editions.

The day started out slightly overcast at the Church Boys Racing shop with a huge collection of Novas and Chevy II’s on hand. Tricia & Carlee Krause were heading up a caravan of gearheads from the Mongoose Motosports shop in Ravenna.
Unfortunately, a rain shower arrived about the same time as the caravan. Not to worry though! The rain pretty much let up and everyone seemed to have a great time checking out the Church’s Open House where Farmtruck and AZN from Street Outlaws were guests.
