MONEY MATTERS FINANCE

BY CATH FOWLER

So, you are thinking about getting yourself a part time job? Well done‌but before you do that searching you need to get set up to make a first good impression.

Crush It Magazine

Getting set up for your first part time job Whether you are looking for an after school job or something casual to earn extra cash during the school holidays, it helps to know what to expect when you first apply for a role. We’ve put together a checklist of the main things you want to think about before you start searching for a job. Write your resume Now this might seem a bit hard since it is your first job you are applying for after all. But there is plenty of things you can look to include on your resume to show why you are the right person for the job. Add in any achievements and awards you have

received at school or in your sporting endeavours. If you’ve volunteered for anything be sure to add that in too. Are you punctual, hard working and love being part of a team? These are all attributes of a great employee. So, don’t be afraid to write it down. Create a cover letter Where possible personalise the letter to the hiring manager and match your skills to the skills that are detailed in the position description. Some jobs require a specialised online form and quiz to be completed. Don’t try and rush through too fast, and make sure you read the question fully. Open a transaction account You might already have a savings account where your parents have put pocket money since you were younger. But when you have your first job you might also want to have a transaction account linked to a debit account. Then you will be able to pay for purchases with your card or take money out at an ATM. Generally, you need to be 14 years or older to open an account with a debit card and you will need some form of ID (such as your birth certificate) to open an account. You want to make sure the account you choose has NO monthly fees involved and ideally has NO fees for withdrawing money from ATMs. These can add up quickly and eat into any money you had saved. So, choose wisely and take your time researching the right account for you. It’s worthwhile also keeping a high interest savings account and getting in the habit early of saving at least 10% of your income.

better than retail funds. You also have the choice of how aggressively you invest (based on your risk profile). As you are young and started out with time on your side it’s not uncommon to take quite an aggressive approach in the first few years of working. Get your social sorted Make sure your social media settings are set to private and that your profile images portray the right impression for an employer. You just never know if hiring managers are going to be doing some online research on you so it’s best to err on the side of caution here. For your first day Leave extra time in the morning to get ready so that you aren’t worried about running late. Check beforehand that you have the right clothes and tools (if applicable) that you will need to perform your job. If you haven’t provided them already, take along your bank details, Tax File Number and Super fund details. Insta: @getmoney_wise

Apply for a Tax File Number So, you can be paid by your employer and they withhold the right amount of tax you need to register for a Tax File Number with the Australian Tax Office. You may be able to apply online otherwise you can get it sorted by heading into an Australia Post store. More details can be found here https://www.ato. gov.au/Forms/TFN---application-for-individuals/ While not the most glamourous thing to do it is important. Your place of employment may have their preferred choice of Super funds, but this doesn’t mean you have to go with their default option. You should do your research (and maybe get some help from your parents) to look at what Super fund works best for you. Industry funds tend to perform 7

1. So, it’s Glitter Girl, is it? - Well my friends call me Glitter Girl of course and I am 10 years old I live on the beautiful Gold Coast. 2. Tell us briefly how Glitter Girl all came about. I have always wanted to own my own business since I was very young. When I was in grade 2, I told my mum I was going to be the head of Hello Kitty in Japan as I was learning the Japanese language at school. I would always visit my Aunts shop in Brisbane and she would teach me how to use the cash register, take money from customers for payment and It was always so much fun getting to count the money at the end of the day. When we were in Hawaii on holidays in 2016, we visited some shops where there were so many sparkly things to buy that we didn’t have back here in Australia. And when we were swimming in the ocean later that day, mum asked me “If you could open a business what would it be and what would you call it”, I immediately said “Glitter & Glitter Girl” I knew everything I wanted it to sell and what it would be like. Rainbows, unicorns and everything pink, but most of all EVERYTHING Glitter When I was in grade 4, I started selling small pots of Glitter at school. I would take samples to school and my note pad to write down the orders. Then the next day I would take in the stock and my friends would pay me. Until the teachers found out because EVERYONE was wearing Glitter, oops! So no more selling Glitter at school, so we took it online. 3. Were your parents surprised with your idea at first? Yes, they thought it was just a cute idea until I bought out My Unicorn notepad and showed them all of the pages filled with my ideas! Then we started talking as a family about how we can make the business come to life. 9

4. Why is Glitter Girl the perfect business/persona for you? I have always wanted to own my own business since I was very young. and I just love sparkle. My mum and dad have taught me that business needs to be fun, then you will always work super super hard. I love what I am doing and this is how I feel about Glitter girl. I get to play with glitter, dress up in beautiful sparkly clothes and send people happiness. 5. How much time do you put into the Glitter Girl business each week? How do you juggle it around your schooling and any extra-curricular activities (tell us about them)? I just wish I could go to the Glitter Girl Head Office every single day and play with the super sparkly glitter, but I have to go to school. Mum brings homework for me to do and I always carry my Unicorn note pad full of my business ideas. Sometimes I will email mum from my school iPad with reminders for her then we will go to the warehouse after school and on weekends. Any Student free days at school, you can always find me at GG HQ! I do Cheer 7 hours a week, which I absolutely love and we always find time to go to the beach. My mum and dad still want me to be able to be a normal kid and let them worry about the business stuff.

10 Crush It Magazine

6. What was the absolute best day of your life? I think it would have been the day JoJo Siwa was at Seaworld earlier this year. I had always dreamed of seeing her in real life, but the most amazing part was that when I was lining up with hundreds of other kids, I heard people calling my name! They came over and asked if they could have a photo with me! I couldn’t believe it. I had just been saying to my mum a few weeks before that it would be so amazing if someone recognised me and it actually happened! 7. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Oh, that’s easy. I would be able to bring Unicorns to life and fly around sprinkling glittery happiness from the sky. I would pick up my friends from school and we would fly there all together sprinkling glitter along the way. 8. What’s your favourite thing to do on the weekend? My favourite thing is to go to the warehouse and do all of the orders! I love seeing what people order, where they live and packaging it all up for them. It makes me so happy knowing that when they open it, they will also love it. Apart from that, I love jumping on my trampoline and swimming in the sparkling ocean with my friends.

11

9. What book have you most recently read? What movie have you most recently seen? I love reading and anything that has “Unicorn” in the title is my type of book. I don’t really watch a lot of movies, I would rather do fun crafty things. 10. What do you want to be when you grow up? I will always be Glitter Girl. There is nothing else in the world I would want to be. When you get to play with Glitter all day, everything else seems super-duper boring. 11. Which celebrity do you look up to, and why? I really love JoJo Siwa because she is a really hard worker and is also a Kidpreneur. She loves life and loves making other people happy. 12. Where do you see yourself and the Glitter Girl business in 15 years? I see that the Glitter Girl Makeup brand will be global. We will have much larger premises and have hundreds of stores retailing our range. I believe in my heart of hearts that this business will be loved by so many people around the world. Spreading happiness one speck of glitter at a time. 13. What has been the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Keep following your heart and your dreams!!! “Keep chasing them wildly as everything is possible when you believe in yourself and know you are the creator of the future.” - Artist Lisa Pollock www.glittergirl.com.au

Next stop The Polynesian Cultural Centre founded in 1865, this area was originally desolate and uninhabitable. Through tender loving care and tenacity the lovely town of Laie, also known as ‘The Gathering Place’, grew into a beautiful center of spirituality, education and ethnic harmony. The Polynesian Cultural Center first opened its doors in 1963 as a way for students at the adjacent Church College of Hawaii (now Brigham Young University Hawaii) to earn money for their education and as a means to preserve and 22 Crush It Magazine

portray the cultures, art and crafts of the people of Polynesia. Prior to this great event, the town of Laie hosted weekly hukilaus, a community fish fry meant to entertain, instruct and support the community. We’ve come a long way since 1963. The center has grown to become Hawaii’s number-one paid attraction, drawing nearly a million visitors a year. www.polynesia.com

I highly recommend a tour of the whole island as well. It takes the entire day but you get to see Diamond Head, the Polynesian Centre, the pineapple and orchid plantations, Pearl Harbor and our tour guide was amazing. His knowledge of the history of the island was second to none. We booked this tour through our hotel and it was awesome. You definitely need at least 7-10 days to make the most of Hawai’i especially if you are exploring the other islands. We only did Oahu this time but definitely next trip will travel a bit more. So, if you want a holiday full of sun, friendly

faces, a laid back lifestyle, an opportunity to learn the culture, beautiful scenery and loads of shopping then you have come to the right place. Aloha for now. i beautiful people!

My name is Delta and I am 14 years old from Australia. I say Australia because my family and I have been travelling around Australia for 3 years but we are originally from Coffs Harbour. It’s me, mum, dad and my little brother Billy who is 10. He loves reptiles and animals and we get along really well. We have been to some amazing places in different states and territories in this beautiful country. We are thinking of moving to the Sunshine Coast next year to have a base between travel, so we don’t currently live anywhere. I love the ocean, swimming and surfing. I also love being creative and sharing my life, making videos and vlogs on YouTube and taking photos for Instagram. I love music but the only thing I can play is a few songs on my ukulele and attempt to dance and sing. I have recently got into doing more yoga and workouts in the morning which is a great way to start the day.

I have been doing home school through a program called Distance Education for the time I’ve been on the road so I’ve never been to a high school! I miss hanging out with friends but I am learning so much more doing home school. If I compete it all quickly (and well) I have so much more time to do other things. My mum loves health and nutrition so it has been great being inspired by her to eat lots of yummy fruits and veg and live a healthy lifestyle with exercise and mindfulness. It’s the best way to feel better if you’re having a bad day. My dad loves surfing and he is also a photographer so he gets some great images and lots of them. Together, mum and dad have a photography business called ST-images. They 26 Crush It Magazine

Well that’s me, hope you all have an awesome day and crush some goals, eat some yummy nourishing food, get out in nature and share your smile with the world! Dreaming of Italy Italy is the perfect destination for a family adventure. We love returning here as often as we can, and our children do too - why? It simply is a country that really embraces everything about family. If you are travelling to Italy with your family - YAY! That is amazing. You are in for a wonderful treat. Come with us and we will share you some of our favourite places. 1. Rome Wander through Rome at any time of the day and you will be amazed at this ancient town. If you are visiting Italy, Rome is a great city to start - it is of course the Countries Capital, and also home of the Vatican - which did you know is considered a separate country! Here you will also be able to enjoy the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Saint Castel D’Angelo. The colosseum is an incredible display of architecture 30 Crush It Magazine

and unbelievable still that it is still standing since it was built in 70AD. If you love your Italian food, then your only difficulty will be choosing which place to have dinner‌ and of course after dinner there is gelato. What will be your favourite flavour? We stay in apartments rented through Airbnb that are close to the town so we can walk and really immerse ourselves into the Roman way of life. Do: Try the authentic gelato See: Inside the colosseum and Roman Forum better yet - hire a guide to take you. 2. Venice Next on our list of Italian cities we love is Venice - the floating city amongst canals and bridges. Built on an archipelago of 118 islands there are over 150 canals, and even more bridges. Be prepared to get lost (hopefully with your family, not on your own) as this place is best explored looking up. Notice all the architecture as you walk around - the gargoyles and symbols of status. Take a walk-through Saint Macs Square (did any pigeons land on you?) and imagine

what life would have been like centuries ago in this place. Venetians have their own history that is very much a part of their identity and that is the Venetian Mask - you will see them everywhere! You can buy one as a souvenir, but why not make your own like we did! Do: Hope on a gondola for a ride - it’s a once in a lifetime experience Avoid: Don’t eat or order in Saint Marcs Square - it will cost you triple 3. Lake Como Further north and to the West, we venture to Lake Como - a scattering of villages surrounding a beautiful lake. It is a place of pure wonderment (I heard that George Clooney has a holiday villa here - but sadly we did not see him). During our visit we took a ferry ride to Bellagio - a neighbouring town and enjoyed a day of walking around this village, having lunch and then the ferry ride returning back to our village of Moltrasio.

Do: Visit in the summer - it’s the perfect location for swimming and enjoying the sun See: Lake Como from a boat so catch a ferry or hire a driver to see the lake from the water 4. Milan The fashion capital of Italy is Milan and once you step foot into the Galleria you will be mesmerised by all of the top designer shops (I think we will just look though yes!). If you are feeling energetic then we can highly recommend the climb up to the top of the Duomo! The sensational views of the square are breathtaking. Don’t forget your charge your camera - you will be taking lots of photos of videos up there. There is also a sensational park called Sepione Park which is adjacent to Castello Sforoza - An impressive castle that the children found enchanting. Walk across the moat and pretend you are in the medieval era or you can hire a buggy so you can pedal yourself around the park, because it is quite extensive.

31

Try: The local dishes famous in Milan is the risotto - try it, it is beautiful. Do: Climb the Duomo and also go inside - it’s so grand and stunning. 5. Sicily This island off the coast of Reggio Calabria is not to be missed - we have only recently spent time in Sicily touring around from Taormina, Catania, Ortiga, and Agrigento. The overwhelming hospitality of the people is so heartwarming and there is so much to do for any type of traveller. If you like adventure we loved visiting Mount Etna - a volcano that is still active today (there was no visible lava when we visited) and we also did a morning of water sports learning to kayak at a local diving school in the town of Aci Castello. There was a great game of water polo we enjoyed watching from the view atop of the castle as well. These interesting moments are what really make a travel experience. You never know who you are going to meet, what you will see and fascinating instances that happen right before your eyes. Take it all in! 32 Crush It Magazine

Do: Visit the markets and try the local food. Sicily has amazing seafood, arancini and granita! See: Get out and explore like a local - if you need guidance in planning a perfect time in Sicily then the great team at Wanderjack can help. 6. Amalfi Coast No doubt you have seen beautiful images of the Amalfi coast and whilst it is a high tourist area, it is still worth visiting!! We choose to spend four days in Positano and will was magical. The colourful homes that climb up the steep mountain side look as though they have been painted on. At times you do feel as though you have stepping onto a movie set. So, how best to enjoy Positano? Well, days by the beach with a bright coloured umbrella and the kids swimming in the ocean was heaven. If you love taking landscape photos this is a beautiful destination to practise your skills. Do: Spend at day at the beach - it really is magical See: See the coast line of Amalfi by ferry, water taxi or boat.

Italy is a destination where all your senses will be ignited, so enjoy the sights, the sounds, smells and feeling of this beautiful country. Insta: @ourfamily_travels Facebook: @helloourfamilytravels www.ourfamilytravels.com.au

SEAGULL MILK

40 Crush It Magazine

How / Why I started Seagull Milk?

I hated wearing sunscreen that would make my hands and body slippery as it would feel gross on my skin and also make everything I touched greasy and slippery too. I knew (especially in Australia) sun protection is essential for a healthy life and so I decided to create my own sunscreen that would take away all these things that people disliked about sunscreen like: slippery hands, thick consistency, stinging eyes, toxic ingredients, strong smell etc… Why should we have to wear something that is supposed to protect us that we hate? With Queensland the ‘skin cancer capital of the world(!)’, I specifically want to help create a solution to people who would rather not wear sunscreen due to the inconvenience it would bring them like the features listed above, helping bring this statistic to a halt. Our products not only are able to be used by regular people but also vegans, and people with sensitive skin (who otherwise react with most other sunscreens on the marketplace)! We’ve decided to keep everything you ‘need’ in a sunscreen like maximum sun-care protection, while adding unique prospects that make our sunscreen unique (they’re listed below). We also believe in taking care of the environment, so Seagull Milk contains no harmful chemicals or ingredients that could hurt/disturb wildlife or habitat. In addition, we also donate part proceeds of every tube we sell to ‘Take3forthesea’ which is an organisation that cleans up Australian beaches and ocean from the high quantity of plastic pollution (which kills thousands of marine animals’ lives)!

41

Features and benefits of using Seagull Milk: • Non-slip formulation (No longer have slippery hands after applying, but rather a quick application without feeling like you’re wearing any sunscreen at all) • SPF 50+ (stay longer out in the sun doing the things you love, worrying less about reapplying) • Reef Safe (Seagull Milk won’t kill or damage the oceanic environment or have any negative effect on nature) • Vegan Friendly (No animals in the making of Seagull Milk were hurt, killed or used) • Mineral based ingredients (Seagull Milk will keep your skin healthy, replenished and without any damage from toxic ingredients and chemicals) • No smell (Your body won’t smell once applied) • 90mins water resistance (enjoy sun protection in and out of the water) • Australian made/sourced (made with highest quality ingredients)

wo years ago, I went on a holiday to the tropical island of Bohol, in the south of the Philippines. One day while snorkelling I was swimming through water dotted with pinkish-purple coral and fish the colour of neon lights. And then I felt something large cover my face. Immediately thinking it was a jellyfish I panicked and pulled it off, springing to the water’s surface. I felt relief. Then dismay. It wasn’t a jellyfish but a plastic bag. As I continued snorkelling, I swam through clumps of plastic trash. Sometimes I could brush it aside, other times I had to peel it off my face. Chip packets, coke bottles and other unidentifiable globs of waste. It’s sad that my memories of that day weren’t only of the fuchsia coral and exotic fish, but equally and vividly of the masses of plastic floating through the water. Experts warn there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. But even if plastic doesn’t end up in the belly of a poor sea creature, or on the snorkelling mask of a tourist, and instead gets sent to landfill, it’s still in a place where it shouldn’t be!

Reduce, reuse, recycle. There are more if you’re really keen, including repair and report. I could geek out and write a novel on each of these R’s, but I’ll spare you, and focus on just two: 1. Reuse. This is the single biggest

change I have made in my life since working at Planet Ark. I now carry a reusable water bottle, a reusable coffee cup (you can design your own here – including choosing your fave colours and style), and shopping bags (usually fabric ones I’ve found at a craft market or op shop) with me everywhere, all the time.

2. Recycle. Did you know most

By saying this, I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed. I want to empower you – there is actually so much we can do to stop this, and the steps are small and simple. They all start with the letter R and you’ve probably heard them before. But don’t let that stop you from considering them afresh. They are the secret to stemming this tide of plastic waste.

‘scrunchable’ soft plastics, like plastic bags, chip packets, and chocolate bar wrappers, can be returned to Coles or Woolworths and recycled? They get turned into things like kid’s play equipment or park benches. All you have to do is pop them in the REDcycle bin which usually live at the front of store.

Many other types of plastic can be put in your home recycling bin. If there isn’t a recycling bin when you’re out and about, put any plastic items in your bag and recycle them when you get home. Or ask yourself if you can go without the plastic products altogether! RecyclingNearYou.com.au is our website and a recycling oracle. Ask it a question and it will give you the right info for where you live, though unfortunately it won’t be able to predict what 2019 holds for your love life.

A PIECE OF CAKE WITH KEA FEATURED: FOOD

Q1 - What inspired you to start a business at 15 years old? It’s all I’ve known. My Mum owned a business my Dad owned his business our friends owned their businesses, so I just thought that’s what you had to do. I also go to a Silkwood High School where they teach Big Picture Education and entrepreneurial mindset, so it was everywhere. I really didn’t think it was a big deal. I now find out that it is. Q2: How did you get started? I didn’t intentionally go out and start a business. One of my Mum’s friends knew I liked making cakes so she asked me to make a Wiggles cake for her daughter. She had a picture of a cake and I tried to make it look like the picture. When my Mum saw the cake, she asked why did I buy that cake. I told her I made it and she thought I was making it up. Then my Mum said how would you like to start a small business making cakes and see how you go. I said OK. And that’s how we got started? Q3: What did you have to do to start your business? There were a few things I had to do. I had to research what I needed to start a cake business what compliance I needed like a Food license, Insurance and then I started a Facebook page. I didn’t know how it would go so it was considered a hobby. Q4: How did you fund your start up? I have funded everything. My Mum believed in me standing on my own two feet. I started a traineeship at Little Miss Muffin in Southport doing a Cert 3 Hospitality. Part of my traineeship is to go to work one day per week so I can gain experience. This year because of the Commonwealth Games my boss asked if I could work every day during the games. I said Yes and it was with this money I could buy equipment, hire a commercial kitchen, pay for insurance, apply for a food license. Q5: Who is your inspiration? My number one inspiration is my Mum I want to be strong and independent like her. My other person I look up to is Adriano Zumbo I love everything he does. He recreates desserts and makes up his own desserts. I want to be able to do that too. I have watched all of his shows and I try to create his desserts at home. I have made his famous Croquembouche tower and I also have made his Macaron tower too.

Q6: How do you manage to run a business and go to school? I go to Silkwood High School and their curriculum is run differently to other schools. We do the Big Picture Education which means we get two days per week to work on our passions. We are allowed to explore what we would like to do in the future. We still do English, Maths, Science, Social Studies etc… We do these subjects on Tuesday-Thursday. We are also self-directed and self-managed. Sometimes I go off track but that’s where my teachers and my parents work together to get me back on track. So, I do get to have time off on Mondays and Fridays to do my traineeship and make cakes for clients. Q7: How many cakes do you make per week? Because I am still at school I have had to limit my cakes to about 3-4 per week. Making 4 cakes is a stretch so my Mum and I try to plan monthly how many cakes I can do according to my schedule for that month. Q8: How much do you earn per month? I have only been going for 3 months. My first month I made $980. My second month I made $1200 and my third month my sales are $2,800. Q9: What do you charge for your cakes? The majority of my cakes I charge between $110 to $170 it really does depend on how many people it needs to feed. I do make cupcakes which are priced between $30-$90. Smaller cakes to feed about 6-15 are between $50-$100. Q10: Do you pay for any expenses? Yes, I do. Mum wants me to live in the real world where you will pay expenses. So, I pay for all of my equipment, raw materials, rent, power, mobile. I also have to pay my sibling Eireann for any professional photos and videos for me. Q11: What role do your parents play in your business? My Mum is my Business Manager so she does the business side of things and manages my facebook. I’ve never used FB so I didn’t really know how to use it.

54 Crush It Magazine

My Dad is actually a renderer by trade and has given me tips on how to render my buttercream on my cakes. I learned from him how to make the buttercream on my cakes smooth. My sibling Eireann is my photographer and videographer. My family play a huge role in my business. We all help each other out. We do a family meeting once a week and we combine a business meeting too. So, we all know where we are at. I also go through with my Mum my content on my socials for the week and we spend Sunday’s scheduling all of our socials so we are organised. We also plan the next weekend’s cakes so I’m well prepared. Q12: Do you have any other hobbies? I do. I really love going to CrossFit 5-6 days per week. I love how it makes me feel strong and I’m getting better and better. I did my first CrossFit comp two weekends ago and I loved it. I also love planning parties, sleepovers and going to the movies with my friends. Q13: Do you have a good work/life balance. I feel that I do and I wouldn’t have it without doing the planning. For me making cakes is not work. It is FUN. I get to create, use my imagination and practise my art. CrossFit is also a necessary part of feeling balance. It clears my head and I feel good doing it. II also allows me to taste my cakes and be healthy too. Q14: Where do you see yourself in the future? Right now, I am still working on that. What I do know is I want to travel all over the world making desserts. Learning from different cultures and showing it to the world. I want to have my own channel where it is dedicated to desserts, travelling, creating, art. I want to meet crazy out of the box people who love what they do. I am learning about residual income at the moment and I want that. I want to keep doing what I love and being able to make a living doing it. Facebook: @apieceofcakebykea

SEAMONE SWIM STYLE GUIDE COLLECTION OF SUSTAINABILITY

W

e are aware that hunting for the perfect swimwear is quite confronting for some. Yes it can be daunting, with insecurities, vulnerabilities and perhaps even fears brought to the surface. Here at Seamone Swimwear we want to change this perception and mindframe of our customers when it comes to shopping for new swimwear. We want our customers to have a enjoyable and supportive online shopping experience. It is our endeavour to celebrate all women, all shapes and sizes and the freedom we have in society. To be able to wear what we choose, that makes us feel feminine, confident, and beautiful. We should really be aware and considerate when deciding what swimwear is best suited for us. Remembering any negative emotions that arise in our lives, even something as simple as self doubt while trying on swimwear. Is just a sign that there is opportunity to work on these parts of ourselves, and let go of all that is holding us back from our true and content being. Seamone understands how confusing swimwear shopping can be, so we have listed below a few shopping tips when it comes time for you to shop for new swimwear on our online boutique.

1. Start your new swimwear journey by loving yourself,

loving your body, cherishing your temple. Appreciating the amazing gift of owning a beautiful and powerful female body! With positive affirmations every day, look in the mirror and smile, look in the mirror and say ‘I look good! I am perfect just as I am’. Confidence must come from within, with an open heart and clear mind you will shine! Embrace who you are, and take conscious steps when self improving your inner or outer health if you’re not quite ready to show off your amazingness in swimwear just yet. Have respect for yourself and the path you are on, take your time to reach your goals by being in the present moment. Be kind to yourself as you transform and grow older, with acceptance that everybody is different. Have loving gratitude for the beauty in others and yourself without comparison.

2. Consider your intentions for buying new swimwear. Think about what you value when it comes to making new purchases. Consider honestly why you need new swimwear, also what you need your new swimwear to deliver in terms of quality and longevity. Consider your swimwear moments and where you will be wearing your new style. How do you visualise yourself wearing your new Seamone piece? We hope you can see yourself looking beautiful, feeling happiness, attracting love, living in the moment. We hope you consider the environment and economic sustainability when purchasing new swimwear. Remembering Seamone Swimwear uses the most modern fabric techniques, utilising recycled yarn that is regenerated from discarded fishing nets. Designed to last longer than any other Lycra on the market. You can look good in the ocean while at the same time knowing your purchase has helped clean up the ocean too.

3. We want you to enjoy your shopping experience.

Shopping for swimwear should not be rushed or stressful. Before hitting the checkout button, hit the relax button. Ask yourself... What swimwear do you feel would suit your body shape and your personality? What styles do you think would be most flattering and comfortable for you? What colours do you like, that suit your skin tone? What sort of sun tanning advantages or coverage would best suit your lifestyle? Are you happy to stick with cuts you regularly wear, or are you feeling brave enough to try something totally different? 64 Crush It Magazine

f I could tell my 15-year-old self anything it would be “You are Beautiful, you are Amazing, You Deserve the best in life - Travel, See the world, meet more people and Don’t settle for second best!” Somewhere along the line these crystals that I came across gave me the strength, to love me more, the confidence to put me first and to walk away from my current situation no matter what was lying ahead, I knew it had to be better than what I had. This was the beginning of Jewels in Harmony ... I guess you could define me as your average girl, unbeknownst to me with low self-esteem, pair that with glasses, braces and middle child syndrome, yes it does exist! As small as it may sound, I grew up hearing comments from family and friends which made me feel that I must have

Maybe I was, and maybe I wasn’t, but to me, hearing those comments made me interpret it to mean that it is going to be hard to find someone who would love me because “I’m so hard to live with”. So, in my world, I had low expectations in the future person that would come into my life. I was only fifteen, thought I knew everything and thought I had met my soulmate. He treated me well based on my low standards and expectations; we didn’t fight and I thought I was in love. I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world because someone as difficult as me had found someone who I thought loved me. From the outside, it was a picture-perfect moment. If anything, we were dubbed the couple of the decade. The relationship lasted 15 years. I married and had 2 amazing children. But I was left feeling empty and alone.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

HEALTH HAVEN BODY BEAUTIFUL, Issue one! I am so excited to be encouraging self-empowerment in each issue. Our journey together will be transformational. Let’s work together to support and develop future leaders.

In this first issue we are starting with body image and the effect it has on so many people. Most people at some stage experience feeling “different” or unhappy with their body. But what is normal? The good thing there is no normal and everybody body is beautiful. Most importantly every body with a desire to make a difference in the world can be a future leader. Social media can make this tricky, on one side it can spread out the good messages for positive change. One the other side it can create an unrealistic beauty norm. Popular images often have used hair, makeup, filters and a design expert has worked on them in photoshop. So how do we begin to love the skin we are in? Check out these stats. This year’s Mission Australia’s National Youth survey has found that at least 1 in 4 young people have serious body image concerns, while other mental health issues such as stress and anxiety have also rated highly. A young person with a mental illness was 55.4% more likely to be concerned about body image than someone without. The impact of negative body image on a young person’s well-being can no longer be overlooked.

Mission Australia national surveys identify that body image is, and continues to be, a major concern of Australian young people aged 12 – 25 years. Body image dissatisfaction is also increasing among boys and men. So, how can we as individuals turn that dissatisfaction around? BE THE ‘KIND’ TYPE OF SOMEBODY. When we are born we don’t know anything but kindness and love. As we grow the people around us begin to give us titles; the cute one, a chubby one, the smart one, the sporty one, the energetic one, the oldest, the middle, and the youngest one, the good one, the naughty one, the tall one, the short one and so on...” By the time we are teenagers we hear so many labels we start to believe them. We can even be telling ourselves these messages are true on a daily basis. These messages can be the foundation of low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, eating disorders and not reaching our fullest potential. The recommendation is to rise above the labels to be the one that say’s I am the kind one and I believe all bodies are beautiful. I want to speak to our future generation of female leaders; feminine nature-based leaders, deep ecology leaders and facilitators, naturopaths, spiritual healers, doctors, shamans, wise women, yoga teachers, herbalists, artists, healers, environmentalists, and mothers.

As for my Instagram and modelling career it has only just started. I created a public Instagram page about 12 months ago where I would just post photos of myself that I liked. After a few months, I was contacted by brands who wanted me to promote their products. After taking lots of photographs of myself I started to enjoy it. In September this year my sister and I were signed to Bettina Management which was very exciting. My sister Eve and I do nearly everything together and are really close. With an age gap of less than 3 years we can really relate to each other which made it so exciting when we both got signed to the same agency. I am very much into fitness and nutrition which I strongly believe helps the mind as much as the body. By having a balanced diet of vegetables, protein and carbs I am able to feel good about what I’m eating and stay in shape. Exercise and sport are also very important to me which helps me keep fit. As an athlete as well as a model I do most of my training

at home or on the track to keep fit. At home training consists of toning my legs, glutes and upper body.

I

t’s no secret it’s hard to find our sense of belonging. I believe we do not need to rush through life, trying to tick off getting a reputable education, great paying job, and house with the perfect family. Thinking back to when I first completed high school my mother had told me I needed to go to university. Now I didn’t want to let her down, so I applied and got accepted. Firstly, I had my gap year where I travelled to 21 different countries with my best friend. I learnt more life lessons in that year than I did throughout my schooling years and five years at university put together. Now for me, my university years weren’t smooth sailing at all, I went through 3 courses before I finally completed one. I believe this was because I was still growing myself and it’s hard to know what you want to do for the rest of your life. It wasn’t until I was lucky enough to take electives in my first course that I got a taste of nutritional and herbal medicine and found my passion for creating a sustainable and natural healthy lifestyle for myself and others around me. As the saying goes “we are what we eat” really began to be backed up by more and more evidence I researched. Another hiccup throughout university I experienced was the sudden loss of a dear friend and housemate. We met at university and after his passing so much of university reminded me of him. I then had a year off, where I went to work overseas and devoted my time to what I loved, surfing with who I loved, my boyfriend. This year took place when I was more than half way through my nutritional medicine degree. A lot of people close to me questioned my decision, but I wouldn’t let anyone stop me. It was

86 Crush It Magazine

a break, to clear my mind and rejuvenate. Following my year off from university, I came back finishing strong with more improved grades than I had ever received. In my last semester of university, I began brainstorming a business idea which has now come to life. Byron Bay Nutrition. As a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner I have designed a business that ties in my passion for nutrition, my desire to improve sustainability and share my health tips to those willing to listen. Not to mention the empowering sensation of owning my own business. Byron Bay Nutrition certainly did not develop overnight. I wanted to know how to run every aspect of the business myself from creating my first ever website to the use of marketing tools, bookkeeping and networking. I don’t feel I’ll ever have completed my business or studies. I want to forever continue to improve my knowledge and skills. For now, what I am certain of is that if I wake up each morning and tell myself, “Let’s be the best version of myself I can be today”. I’ll live in the present and take each step as it comes.

SWEET ENOUG HEALTH & WELLNESS

BY EMMA WILSON

The Year ‘without challenge” What can you do ‘without’ for a year? The boys chose a ‘No Sugar Zone’ My boys chose to not have sugar for twelve months; they could have chosen anything really. They successfully completed the full twelve months with no lollies, sweet drinks and everything in between and as you can imagine, almost most meals or snacks were affected by sugar. They were spurred on by the reward of receiving $200 each if they were successful AS WELL as receiving the other brother’s reward money if the other one caved in and ate sugar. They really learnt a lot about themselves in terms of resolve, peer group pressure, inner strength and leadership, as everywhere they went they inspired other kids to give the same or different challenges a try. Jesse, (aged 8 at the time) said “When people gave me a hard time I didn’t care because I knew I was getting the reward money at the end”. Byron, (aged 10 at the time) said “The challenge was hard but it was actually not TOO bad. All I had to do was just say NO. Any peer group pressure people tried to put on me I just said no”.

GH The book is written in a fun, colourful kid-friendly format with large images, quotes from the kids and commentary from nutritional experts about the snacks and drinks they swapped in place of sugary ones. It is designed to be read together with adults or just read alone from age 6 and upwards and inspires kids and adults alike to challenge them self to do something worthwhile and experiment with saying no to things that might be unhealthy for them to realise that more often than not, you’re going to set a positive example to those around you and it will make you feel great. Art Reflecting Life Youth Retreat

Bringing Art, Sport, Critical Thinking and Love to our youths lives

“ YOU ARE ENOUGH”

The Art - Youth will engage in

theatre activities designed to bring out their strengths. They will design a performance piece for the last day. family and friends.

The Reflecting - There will be a series of meditations and yoga programs to stretch the mind and body. Helping to open the attitudes of humility and gratitude.

The Life - Many youth follow like

sheep the latest trends, computers and fear driven world views. We help them develop soft skills like teamwork, communication, interpersonal skills to critically think and navigate life consciously.

The Purpose

The Concept

The concept is drawn from my youth of going to music and acting camps, baseball, basketball and cheerleading camps where I could really explore my desire to perform, play sport and have transparent communication. These camps ask tough questions about what I wanted for my life and how I wanted to give back to the world. These camps helped me learn the values of team work, problem solving in the real conflict and confronting situations. These camps have inspired me to create what I believe is missing in so many of our youths life today grit, compassion, self love and the ability engage in open and honest conversation with people from all walks of life without judgement or fear.

The art reflecting life retreat is designed to bring back the creative and critical thinking in our youth. The program draws together the art world and life skills to show a creative yet intelligent way to live life, solve problems, discover what ones passions are, develop collaborative experiences through a series of uniquely designed activities and topics. And lastly start a dialog within themselves that fosters growth and ultimately allows true connection through understanding vulnerability, courage, self worth and love in Relationships, School, Family, Sport, Art and day to day life. 95

EQ GIRLS LIVE & LEARN

M

y name is Kim Setiu and I am a wife, mother, friend, self-employed Counsellor, Founder and head mentor of EQ Girls Plus, so, so much more. As a woman who has worked in many businesses as a ‘communications expert’ dealing with adults in the areas of conflict resolution, customer service, mediation and managing people I found one’s emotional intelligence was significantly varied.

As a Qualified Counsellor/ Coach of my own clinic seeing and hearing clients (women, couples and teens) discuss issues and how they believed they lacked the ability to deal with, react to, and respond to thoughts, emotions and circumstances presented to them in everyday life. This got me thinking and asking questions! Why? What’s the differences? What’s the patterns, behaviour, thoughts, beliefs, peoples understanding, varied emotions? How can I break this down? Educate in a simple way? Use ‘friendly’ language for clients of all ages?

relationships judiciously and empathically. EQ is vital is developing a strong resilient mind, feeling balanced and trusting that we can handle ourselves in different situations. However, we are not born with EQ: it is a learned skill. Statistics from Mission Australia, Headspace, Beyond Blue and Lifeline about the recent increases in bullying, low self-esteem, suicide and the worrying mental health in our youth, particularly for girls, starting as young as 9 years old is alarming.

We know that girls as young as 9 are experiencing anxiety, heightened and more frequent emotional outbursts, unable to feel that they’re coping with life in general, feeling misunderstood and wondering why they are experiencing extreme mood swings. That’s why I designed the EQ Girls program, because we know we can help girls make sense of all these things, and provide them with valuable, age-appropriate tools they can use daily. EQ Girls is a new & exciting approach for girls (9-14) to learn about themselves I thought if the women who come to me whilst tackling the ‘stuff’ that girls face now as clients, actually learnt EQ (Emotional both physically & emotionally every day. Intelligence) skills as tween/teen, well the world today would be a different place. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal 96 Crush It Magazine

INSPIRING LIVE & LEARN

A

uthor of 20 books and mom of one teenage daughter and one almost teen son, Frances Vidakovic runs a popular parenting website inspiringlifedreams.com where she encourages moms (and kids too) to dream big and live more fabulous, purposeful lives. Prior to blogging, Frances ran a successful life coaching business for fifteen years where she firstly encouraged clients to live an INSPIRING life. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, she aimed to inspire LIFE in people. Even back then she understood intuitively that there isn’t a person in this world that is lucky enough to score a smooth, trouble-free ride through life. Everyone’s ride is occasionally (or often!) bumpy and along the way we all face hurdles, challenges, fear and failure.

“It’s what we do when we face these hurdles that define us.”

100 Crush It Magazine

Will we conquer our fears or let them control us? Will we step outside our comfort zone or stay confined within the limitations of our mind? Frances’ ultimate goal as an author and blogger is to help moms and teen pursue their dreams and live a fabulous life. As a mom of two children herself, including a son with special needs, parenthood fuels her fire and determination to find and create the best tools and resources possibly for families everywhere. Her philosophy is simple: life is full of ups and downs but ultimately every individual in this world has something special to share. So, what is your gift? What is your purpose? And are you willing to begin sharing with others today? Frances’s goal is for teens to understand that life is supposed to be embraced. Many teenagers wish they had more guidance, support and encouragement as a teenager. They wish they had been braver and more confident. They wish they had been less afraid and more willing to use their own voice. More than anything they wish someone had shared with them the all- important words: like “hey, please don’t worry; everything will end up working out okay.” It helps for teens to know in advance that life rarely turns out the way we expect it to but every struggle shapes us into the person we are today. All in all, do not live life with regret. Her course Inspiring Teens is a comprehensive guide to helping teens do just this - live life without regret. Inside this course you will find important lessons that every teen needs to understand about life but that will never be taught alongside Math and English at school. Her blog also addresses popular teen issues including friendships, resilience and attitude and offers tips to help both parents and teens navigate through this period with grace, love, and hope.

You see Milan was born with a rare Chromosome Deletion, which affects different parts of her body. Even though some of her obstacles in life have been tough, it has not stopped this young girl from believing she can achieve and be whatever she wants to be. At age 5, Milan’s mum put her into modelling classe to help with her co-ordination and keep her confidenc high. It was then that Milan’s mum and dad realised that this little girl had confidence beyond her years and a charisma that was infectious.

And Milan’s journey began, even against some odds this girl was going places. Milan attends the Children’s Hospital on a regular basis and it was at one of those visits 2 years ago that Milan was asked to host a Juiced TV episode fo Halloween. After that first experience with a microphon in her hand, cameras rolling & being on TV Milan said to her mum, ”I’ve found what I’m meant to do mum, this is me”.

y name is Phoebe and I love animals. Particularly sharks because they are a keystone species which human life relies on for support. I have spent years watching shark documentaries and learning about how the reef life is in danger and I want to do something to help. I want to join a conservation group that researches and records the destruction of the reef and hopefully one day I will be able to help them find a solution to the decreasing number of sharks and marine life in our world. My goal is to join an Oceans 2 Earth volunteer program in February next year, and hopefully every year until I am old enough and have enough qualifications to work in the industry. Anything you buy from me and any donations made will go towards my fees to join my first volunteer group next year when I am 14. Thank you for supporting me to help make the future of our world sustainable and healthy.

What I sell: Bamboo Tooth brushes - $5 Bamboo keep cups - $10 Bamboo straws & straw cleaner (pack 2) - $4 Bamboo is fully biodegradable in backyard compost bins and will break down easily even accidently dropped in rivers/water. If our marine life stumbles across and decides it looks like food, it will not harm them. Our keep cups are 100% biodegradable (even the lid!) so even when you decide you don’t want it, it will not contribute to landfill.

LAUNCH PAD LIVE & LEARN

Queensland’s first Student Startup Landing Pad, established in Innovation Hub

G

OLD COAST, QLD – Young Entrepreneurs on the Gold Coast are getting set for success with the announcement of Queensland’s first dedicated Student Startup Landing Pad launching at the Gold Coast Innovation Hub in Robina. The initiative is a collaboration between the Gold Coast Innovation Hub workspace powered by Little Tokyo Two, Startup Apprentice and is co-funded with the support of Study Gold Coast’s Vision 2020 fund. The project will provide young innovators with the space, resources and support to continue working on business ideas after participation in school and university led programs or competitions such as the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards or Startup Weekends.

Startup Apprentice Co-Founder, Sam Winter, says: “The project addresses a recognised gap between entrepreneurial programs and successful business creation. Startup Apprentice have been introducing entrepreneurship to Gold Coast students for over five years and have had over 1000 students participate in our programs. We have helped dozens of student teams build business models and prototypes of products, but when the school term ends, there is no pathway for these students to keep building on their ideas in order to create commercial outcomes. The Student Landing Pad is the missing ‘Next Step’ our young innovators need.”

Students entering the landing pad will be assisted on their startup journey by an ‘innovator in residence’ and student mentors who will support the young entrepreneurs by providing them with introductions to advisors and potential customers. Positioned in the heart of the Innovation Hub this initiative will also allow students to interact and converse with the 200 digital and technology based businesses that utilise the workspace, as well as tapping into the visiting entrepreneurs, subject matter experts and service providers that regularly visit the Innovation Hub. The Landing Pad will accept up to eight student startups per term, commencing in February 2019. Gold Coast Innovation Hub CEO, Sharon Hunneybell says that teachers and parents should act quickly to secure a space for their budding young entrepreneurs.

“The Gold Coast Innovation Hub at Robina is a vibrant place designed to help early stage businesses commercialise and grow. We look forward to working with the student entrepreneurs that enter the space by helping them to create a new wave of businesses and job opportunities for young people on the Gold Coast.”

SO YOU WANT TO START YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY? Well keep reading… A

s a fitness professional it’s important to point out that you should seek proper advice from someone like myself to help you with starting out. When we first step into a gym it can be overwhelming with all the different types of equipment and machines, so by having a PT or instructor with you it can make it a lot less intimidating. If you are someone that has played sport you have a little bit of a head start on most people already. When you play sport the bio-mechanicals of your body are already quiet strong, so when you do start weight training or some kind of fitness you are

already aware of how your body moves and how its supposed to feel through the exercises. When I have young clients come to me, I keep the training sessions fun and mostly light weight. At the young age of most girls who read this magazine there is really no need to lift any heavy weights. It’s about getting to know your body in the movements, learning correct technique and most of all making the sessions enjoyable.

So what is the first thing you should do if you want to start weight training? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Find a trainer you and your parents are comfortable with Get some good workout shoes and comfortable clothing (visit buil4th is.com.au) Start to research healthy meals to cook with you parents Start slow about 1-3 times per week. As your fitness increases then increase your workouts. Find a friend to do it with you. This is a great way to keep motivated and share the experience with someone who can make it fun with you. Document your results. Take photos every few months just to see any changes. Keep in mind as you’re young adolescent females your bodies will start to change a lot during your teenage years so don’t focus too much on how you look. Be happy with your body but do not become obsessive. This is all about having fun and learning.

I believe that knowledge is power and the more young females know about health and fitness, the healthier they will be throughout their entire lives. I can’t stress enough that being ‘skinny’ does not mean you are healthy and being a little bit bigger does not mean you are ‘fat’. Everyone has different body compositions so as long as you move everyday and eat lots of nutrient dense foods then that’s all that matters. If your wanting more information or would like to train with me please send me an email : Ash@built4this.com.au Next issue I want to talk about good nutrition and how to eat healthy. Plus, all my tips and tricks to stay in shape. Ash x

ICE ICE BABY FITNESS

BY RAYNE I

’ve been playing Ice Hockey both here and in Brisbane for over three years and started playing goalkeeper last season because unless one of us stepped up we didn’t have a team. It’s a tough position that takes a lot of courage but I thought why not give it a try. I had a lot of success right away even with no goalie training and got a lot of attention in the Ice Hockey world. My first Shut Out was after my fourth game!

This summer I’m training hard to try out for next seasons Queensland team as I want to take it as far as I can. Most recently I was asked if I could play in a tournament in Perth. It’s an expensive sport so I can’t take all the opportunities that come along unfortunately, even though I want to. Ice Hockey is my family sport, my great grandparents owned the Toombul Ice Rink well before I was born. My grandfather who is my inspiration and role model and my great uncles played top level Ice Hockey for Queensland and Australia. My aunts were figure skating champions so our family has a long history on the ice. My brother and I are now the only family members to continue the tradition and we are so proud to do so. In Australia we are the minority and it has always been a struggle to grow and prosper here over footy, cricket, and soccer.

I started to love playing Keeper even though I missed playing Defence, I was a really good Goalie. It can be quite explosive at times, there is glory too, like the time I won a four shot shoot out and took our team to a win, so much pressure. For a newbie I was in high demand over the winter season also playing for Brisbane Women’s teams and Junior clubs sometimes up to three games a week plus training. One of my teams won Gold at the Coffs Harbour tournament in September My home club is The Gold Coast Grizzlys and I was on a recent episode of Totally and our home rink is at Bundall where Wild. we have kids from 6-16 training every Tuesday night. We’re always looking for 122 Crush It Magazine

more kids to join and be a part of our Insta: grizzlys_ice_hockey Grizzly family. We have so much fun and we export some great talent too. So why not come on down and see if you might like to join our club as it’s lots of fun. At the moment I’m training twice a week and working on my fitness while I get ready to play for two teams in the Melt the Ice Tournament in January. I’m working on my skills ready for my next opportunity. I love the sport and you might too. We would love to see you at Bundall as there is nothing like it especially on the Gold Coast. 124 Crush It Magazine
