TRAVEL

MY FAMILY TRAVELS A Winter Christmas

H

aving grown up in Australia - all I have ever known is how to celebrate Christmas in the summer. This would usually involve trying to stay cool - the shade of a tree, the air-conditioned comfort of a home or near a beach, lake or river to swim in. Us Southern Hemisphere dwellers are not prone to visiting winter markets, building a snow man or only having to wait until 4.30pm to see the lights adorning homes around the neighbourhood. Christmas in Australia is oh so very different, and so it got me thinking of how magical it would feel to experience a Winter Christmas. Now that I am a mother to two children what better excuse than to do just that. So we did. My husband and I have long wanted to experience a Christmas overseas and so we decided to take the leap and do it and experience the joy with our children. We chose Vancouver, Canada as our destination for the festive season and whilst we knew we might not be guaranteed snow, we knew it would be cold! Finally - a classic winter Christmas.

6

7

So, how was it?

We arrived a few days before Christmas and rented a small home just on the outskirts of town. I had pre-ordered groceries to be delivered and our host even bought me a turkey so I could cook us a traditional winter Christmas lunch. I was super excited.

8

First stop - the Christmas Market. We headed down to Canada Place where we knew there would be a market and it did not disappoint. It was a cold morning, so we were rugged up with our jackets and beanies, and the kids enjoyed listening to carols being sung, as we walked around the markets admiring gifts of every kind and the food was amazing too! My husband and I enjoyed mulled wine and the kids got stuck into warm pretzels and dancing to the carollers.

9

Next on our Christmas agenda was the light festival being held at VanDusen Botanical Gardens and this event made us really feel like we had stepped into a Christmas wonderland. There were lights covering the ground, the trees, cascading towards the water, over archways and synchronised to music. This made us really feel like we were beginning to know we were right in the middle of a winter christmas festivities. As Christmas day dawned, we woke up (all in matching Canadian Onesies I might add) to open some gifts under the tree and play games all morning. It was a very cold day - I think around 5 degrees when we woke up, so it felt very different from being in Australia and the temperature soaring past 20 by mid morning. I cooked that delicious turkey I mentioned earlier and in the afternoon full to the brim from lunch we took a brisk walk to Queen Elizabeth Park, and were rewarded with a great view over the city. Christmas Eve we visited the Capilano Suspension Bridge which had a great treasure hunt style activities for us as a family to try and solve. The bridge was a bit busy that day, so it was rather wonky, but it is 140 metres long and suspended about 70 meters from the ground, so it’s to be expected. We visited during the day, however we noticed that this attraction also had Christmas lights that would look spectacular to visit in the evening.

10

11

Another great adventure in Vancouver was a walk to Stanley Park. There is a great Aquarium in the middle of park and the perfect activity for a rainy day.

12

13

I did think that being the four of us with no extended family to visit that we might feel a little lonely being on the other side of the world at Christmas, however, my advice would be to plan for this and make your sure you make your own fun! We had games to play and each member of the family were in charge of something for Christmas Lunch. In the evening we watched a movie (National Lampoons Christmas Vacation) and we laughed until our bellies hurt. It certainly was a magical Christmas I will cherish forever.

1. What motivates you to crush your dreams? My aspiration to live my life in stories! 2. Who is your biggest inspiration in life and why? My father. He built a company from nothing. He is very business minded and has taught me to look at filmmaking with the same approach. My husband. He reminds me I can do whatever I set my mind to. He reminds me I can make my dreams happen when I think I can’t. 3. What do you like to do when you’re not making films? When I am not making movies, I love to watch movies! If you pull me away for long enough from a movie, I like to travel, love the beach and the bush. I get inspiration from spending time in the beach and the bush. I like to meditate. 4. Favourite place you’ve travelled to for your job? When I get to live in a film, I consider that a form of travel. Travelling into Sammy’s world was truly an incredible experience that changed me as a person in terms of helping me to appreciate the value of having a home, food, freedom, safety and a life of my own. 5. What would you say is your biggest accomplishment? When I take an idea from its idea form into a completed film, those are by far my biggest accomplishments. 20

21

6. How old were you when you started your love for film? Actually older than many filmmakers. I started off doing theatre, for fun. Certainly not as a career. I acted, stage managed, wrote and directed plays. I only started playing around with film in 2002. I was 22! So actually when I became interested in film, I was well behind others interested in film and hadn’t yet seen many classic movies!

7. What films did you watch as a child? 5. When did you start writing? As a child I loved Disney films. I used to watch I wrote my first full song at 13, I can still remember how it went. I movies like Aladdin, The around Little15 Mermaid and think I started writing regularly Pocahontas. I love the remake of Aladdin. 6. Your writing absolutely amazing. It reallyMen touches heart and I used tosong love SciisFi. I used to watch inmyBlack soul when I listen. Where does this sense of inner self and emotion come andfrom? Independence Day repeatedly. I always do my best writing when I’m upset about something. Like, I will literallywas be sitting room,of post break-up, writingdirectors. a song and Spielberg andinismyone my favourite profusely sing through myknow hysterics ha ha ha. great, If I sobbing ever met himasII would not what to It’s say! I I love it. My boyfriend jokes about starting a fight if I have a writer’s used to watch as a child Jaws, Jurassic park and block, because even if it’s petty, I will make it into an emotional, draThematic Goonies. song

7. Favourite place you’ve travelled for your music? I loved watching Stand bytoMe and Now and Then. I’m yet to go further than Sydney for a gig, but London is a dream of I used to enjoy watching Home and Away. My dad mine. The music coming out of the UK really appeals to me, I’d love would turn off and to getconstantly over there and suss theitmusic scenetell me to stop watching it. When I was older, I got him back by 8. How doart you deal with pre show nerves? doing an department attachment on Home Plenty of practise leading up to the gig and Away for several months. I used to tease him saying you wouldn’t let me watch Home and Away, but now I can watch it all day!

A movie that had a big impact on me was Not Without My Daughter. Many years later I studied under the director of the movie in the Director’s Series at The National Film and Television School in London.

8. If you had to do anything other than film what would it be? I can’t imagine I would be happy doing anything other than making films and telling stories. I love the collaborative nature of film. I love working with other creative talents. I absolutely love creating the image on the screen and all the parts that go into it. I love that it is technical yet creative at the same time. I love it when all the work that has been done by everyone comes alive on set and solidifies into a story in the edit room. 9. What is a quote that motivates and inspires you? The woods would be silent if no birds sang except the best. Think about this one. It is all about creating, even if you are not the best. 10. How do you deal with pre show nerves I don’t get nervous. I get excited! I can’t wait to get onto set. I love to get to set before everyone else arrives, in the quiet before the action starts. I love to walk around and sit in quiet on the set. Sometimes I act out the scenes by myself. I imagine I am the different characters and I walk around the set as if I am them. This helps me get into a head space that can give my best to the actors and the crew.

24

12. What’s your favourite film at the moment? Whatever film I work on, I have several films that are my favourite. It really depends what I am working on. I love stories like Hunger Games, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Divergent, Harry Potter, Maze Runner, Children of Men. Actually the names of these films represent the types of films I want to make. Sci Fi and Fantasy films for kids, teens and families. Yet films which address issues that are relevant to our society, issues that get us thinking about our world and how we can make it better. 13. Who is your role model in the industry? I love Steven Spielberg, David Yates, Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro. 14. What is your next goal in your career? My next goal is to make two feature films. One project I am working on is a feature film version of the short film Sammy. The feature is about a girl who despite her life being impacted by war, inspires other children who are just like her, to make the world a better place. I am also working on a feature film version of the book Megan’s Star by Allan Baillie. The film is about a girl who learns to love who she is and the incredible things she is capable of when she connects to her higher self after learning how to use a supernatural world of divine power. I am working on a short film called Fairytale. It is about an infertile fairy who tries to make herself fertile before learning to see the good in life despite her situation. 25

LIVE & LEARN

FRIENDSHIP MATTERS Have you ever felt lonely emotionally or isolated from the group? Have you experienced rejection or felt unworthy?

I

have found that often these questions that we ask ourselves are left unanswered. When you concentrate on why it’s happening to you, you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position that can lead to an overwhelm, creating reality that doesn’t exist. To avoid this overwhelm, you need to ask yourself better questions, because good quality questions lead to better answers.

26

Research tells us that our friendships play a big part in our lives and especially in the way we feel about ourselves and see ourselves both internally and externally. Friendships first develop during childhood, when youngsters learn to interact with others; they learn how to agree and disagree, to exchange meaningful words and gestures. Therefore having supportive friends helps you feel loved, be productive at school and boost your happiness.

27

Friendships are unique relationships that no one teaches you about, it’s like a science class where the experiment may or may not work. For example, let’s look at some common questions that often can feel too awkward to ask…

In my opinion, friendships have to be cultivated and nurtured to be meaningful over years. Social media platforms supposedly enable people to make friends, but unfortunately some of these online friendships are more “virtual” than real.

How do you make new friends? Are you just a virtual friend? When is the right time to end a friendship that is hurting you? Are you in a toxic friendship?

So, does social media strengthen friendships or make them more shallow? According to many studies done over the years by prestige universities like Harvard and Stanford, “virtual friendships” can never replace the magic of face to face interactions. Today I am answering all these questions and Therefore having a healthy perception and a also giving you some bonus tips on how to clear understanding of how much time you build genuine friendships so stay tuned. need to spend online and offline with your friends can ironically lead to stronger friendships and better bonds in a real life.

Making new friends is one of the most exciting things when you are in your teens. You don’t have as many responsibilities as the adults do, life is a piece of cake and you can’t wait to see someone you know to talk about the new episode of this exciting show on Netflix. The real challenge occurs when you don’t have as many friends as you thought that would actually be interested in your story. It’s completely fine because it’s a great opportunity for you to go and make new BFF’s and share your stories with them. How? It’s a very good question. Let me give you a few tips…

28

29

1.

Be yourself - when you pursue activities and hobbies you enjoy, you have a great chance of meeting people with similar interests. It can be sports; dancing classes; cooking; reading books and the list goes on.

2.

Be interested to be interesting – listen to what your new friend has to say and don’t interrupt them. Share something meaningful about yourself and ask your new friend if they want to share the same with you. You can also offer your help with homework or whatever they need or ask them for help with your stuff.

3.

Show your pearly whites – your smile is a very powerful tool. People who smile are perceived as more attractive, kinder, happier and more approachable.

4.

Rejection is your friend – never take anything personally. Not everyone has to like you it’s simply impossible. Choose your own tribe because they are the ones who will be genuinely interested in your friendship. Always wish people well, even when you don’t feel like it. It will serve you in the future.

30

31

Moving forward, I would like to talk about toxic friends and toxic friendships. First thing is to recognise the signs. Toxic people gossip about others and you, they criticise you or your appearance, they demand too much without giving back.

Don’t hesitate to ask yourself how you feel when you are with that person. Do you feel drained of energy or feel worse when you hang out with them? If this friendship doesn’t serve your mental health and your wellbeing then you should think about letting it go. Your wellbeing is one of the most important things in your life. Nothing can replace a healthy and happy mind filled with exciting memories and adventures that will be a stepping-stone for your success as you approach your adulthood. Always remember to love yourself and celebrate your small and big wins because the world is changed by your example, not by your opinion. Love with Passion!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

ELA’S MINDSET MAGIC

M

y name is Ela Staniak, I am a Weight Loss, Wellness & Mindset Coach.

I help people who struggle with weight loss and want to boost their body confidence and feel good in their own skin by helping them in removing toxic patterns or behaviours. By setting up simple daily healthy habits in areas of improvement like healthy eating, exercise and also mindset. I empower them to achieve long term results by taking small daily steps to improvement. The starting point is finding our true purpose for being healthy in body and mind. We must know our WHY before we figure out HOW to get there. I believe everybody deserves to thrive in health and happiness. 34

35

As I sit down to write this article, excited about being a part of this fantastic movement I ask myself one question: “What is the best value I can provide for some of our readers to help them improve their mindset towards success?” I want to share my story with you. This is a story of me, a polish girl who has grown up not having much in an industrial part of Poland and achieved everything she ever wanted and more in Australia before she turned 30.

I grew up with an alcoholic father. I had watched how for 15 years my father’s drinking problem was not only ruining our family but also ruining my mother’s health. Unfortunately, both of my parents passed away a few years after their divorce when I was a teenager, father of alcohol, mother of stress related heart attack.

I quickly learned that we cannot take our physical or mental health for granted. Our body and mind work together and affect I like to say that my life has been preparing each other more than we can realize. What me to do my job since I was born. This mindset I learned from my mum was to always have helps me to remember that all the pain, a positive outlook on life and always keep difficulties and struggle I have gone through hope. She was such a positive person even as a child and then a teenager had its purpose, when things at home weren’t good. Whenever and I serve that purpose today in the coaching I think of my mum, I see her smiley face. My work that I do every day. mum struggled with losing weight since I can remember, even though she was never a big eater. I always wondered how could that be possible?

36

37

I developed stress induced psychosomatic disorder as a child- battled stomach aches and headaches for years. My body weight fluctuated throughout my whole life. I remember seeking better energy levels, better eating habits, more happiness in life and less stress. In a way choosing happiness became my coping mechanism for all the unhappy that I would experience. Here’s the thing …

Happy thoughts bring more happiness into our life.

want to choose happiness every day, especially when difficult things happen to us, we want to be able to eventually find our happy place again. After my parents passed away my brother looked after me for 3 years. I am so grateful for that. This difficult experience of losing parents was traumatic and later on in my life I had to take steps and actions to resolve it emotionally, but today I am able to look back at it and see the good in what happened. This situation allowed me to became curious, adventurous and it gave me an open mind to seek more in life.

I became such a Life Enthusiast, an Negative thoughts Experience-Junky and bring more negativity a Total Dreamer into our life. There was no one to set boundaries for me,

Sounds simple? Well, it is simple in theory but so I set them myself. That of course came with making a series of not the smartest requires regular practise. decisions, but that was my journey (haha) They key is to not only wait for happy moments to be happy. They key is to find strategies that help us find happiness in whatever situation we are. Have you heard of “finding happiness within”? It’s possible! We

I find beauty in its imperfection.

38

39

1. Invest your energy only into things that you can control, let go of what you cannot control.

After I finished high school in Poland, it was simply the sense of adventure which took me to Ireland first, and then Australia. In Sydney I studied Fitness, Sports Coaching and Wellness Coaching. Living in such a multicultural place allowed me to get to know traditions, food and culture from all over the world. My closest friends come from everywhere but from Sydney (so we laugh when we see each other) Today I am happily married to my beautiful Samoan husband, having the business of my dreams, feeling great about how I feel, look and feeling content with who I am and where I am heading. My purpose is clear, my plan is set and I am looking forward to experiencing life in all of its aspects. 40

See my friends, things happen in our life sometimes that we cannot control. We cannot control the weather, politics, street traffic or some of the rules that we need to comply with. We cannot control other peoples’ behaviours, what other people say, what other people think of us and that’s ok- everyone is on their own path and we need to respect that. When You focus on You and what YOU CAN DO - you claim your power back. Don’t hand your power to someone else, or external conditions that you cannot change. Don’t wear the victim’s hat. Don’t waste your precious time blaming other’s or other situations for your unhappiness. YOU GOT THIS! What we can always control is how we respond to certain situations. We can control our attitude. We can control what we say. How do we respond to negativity? How we respond to lack of kindness, lack of respect or anger? Our attitude is totally in our control.

Throughout my journey of self-discovery, I learned that our mindset determines the level of our success and failures and the best thing about it is that we can fully train it and control it. Whoop whoop! There are a few tips I want to give you that I hope will help you create a healthy mindset that you can apply not only to your health and fitness but also to other areas of your life. Like future success with career, relationships, money, spirituality and anything that you will desire more of.

41

2. Choose happy thoughts. Choose gratitude.

What we can also control is what we do when we don’t like where we are at right now. WE TAKE ACTION! Examples?

Exercise A.

-

Great exercise to retrain what you think of Do you not do well at English or Biology? yourself and drop words of self-criticism is Take tutoring or ask your classmates having a Self-Love Diary or Journal where for help. Do more or what you think every day (YEP! EVERYDAY!) for 60 days you you are not good at! will write

-

Do you not like some of your friends? Spend more time with people who make you happy.

“10 things you like about yourself and then you will recite those things looking in the mirror”.

- Do you self-criticize? STOP! We need to retrain your self-talk. And we CAN! Focus on everything you like about yourself and everything you are good at. Talk about your talents, character, smile, humour or things that your friends say you are good at. This might seem difficult at first but you will get in the groove. The more you do it, the easier it gets!

42

This takes everyday action too! I say choose, because we can fully train our brain to eventually have happiness as a default. See, the sooner you build an awareness of your thoughts and recognize that “happiness brings more happiness, and negativity brings more anxiety” the sooner you will become absolutely unstoppable at whatever you want to achieve. The researches in Harvard University tested our brain and chemistry and proved that mindfulness for example- meditation, gratitude, conscious breathing boost the production of our illness-fighting genes. That means that feeling happy, relaxed and positive allows us to be physically healthy too. As I said earlier, body and mind work together :)

Exercise B. In the same Self-love journal, you will write “10 things every day that you are grateful for.” We can appreciate the smallest things like sunny day, clean bedsheets, food in the fridge through to some more significant like our family, friends, relationships, feeling good, feeling healthy or simply having a chance to go to school. This will raise your everyday happiness level and remind you of all the greatness that surrounds you. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how lucky we are.

43

3. Everything in nature is in balance. What I mean by that is that we want to accept all that is opposite in nature and that it creates balance. How would we appreciate all the good without experiencing the opposite to that? There are:

See I appreciate everything I have got today so much more because I experienced the absence of it in the past: - I love that I live by the beach now because I grew up in such a concrete jungle -

I tell my husband I love him every day because I experienced heart break and loneliness in the past

-

I love my body shape today because I invested countless hours into my fitness, healthy eating and mindfulness especially at the times when I didn’t feel good in my own skin

- good and bad – hot and cold – wet and dry – feminine and masculine – easy and - I feel healthy today because I practise difficult – water and fire – happiness and mindfulness everyday sadness – success and failure – winning and losing – patience and impatience – quick - I am grateful for my happy life today and slow – and more because I overcame real difficulties in the past You get it right? :) The contrast is there for a reason.

4. Find your purpose, set the plan, take action. One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to find your purpose. Do you realize how exciting this time of your life is now? You can choose whoever you want to be in the future, whatever you want to do, whatever you want to be good at. Please, be excited about this! Be brave to explore different disciplines: music, art, sports, academics, reading? Do you dream of being a baker, a nurse, a dentist, a beautician? You have got time now to be curious. Use it well. I am so excited for you, to be writing this and encouraging you to JUST BE YOU! Find something that you enjoy doing that gives you butterflies and pursue it! Once you find that out, dream about it. What is your big vision? What do you see yourself doing in 2 or 5 years? Set your plan and follow your steps.

44

Exercise C Write your big vision in your Self-love diary and call it “My Life Script” or whatever you want to call it. Who you want to be or what you want to do? Who is going to be there with you to support you? Describe it in detail. Why do you want to pursue that? What are some necessary steps to get there? Extra education? Someone’s help? How will you feel when you achieve it? Dive into the world of imagination and don’t hold back :)

45

5. Fall in love with overcoming obstacles. There are no failures,

“If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand” –Bob Proctor

Every achievement requires work, effort and consistency. Don’t avoid obstacles. Every time you do something outside of your comfort zone especially when you face your fears you learn some of the most powerful lessons in life. You grow! You improve! You get closer to your dreams! Once you have got your vision set, your mindset tools in place and plan of action ready, get ready for consistent work and effort to get there. I feel that one of the biggest challenges which teenagers face today is the fact that the expectations often outweigh the reality, or that the reality doesn’t meet the expectations. What often happens is that our goals require much more work, energy and time to achieve them than what we anticipated and then we get discouraged. Be persistent! It’s worth it! Listen my friends, the human brain continues to develop pretty much until the age of 25! If you really what to maximize your future success and health you want to feed your 46

body and mind right and avoid everything that can poison your health and that means focusing on: fresh nutritious food, regular exercise, stress management (mindfulness), positive thoughts, positive people, and seek happy healthy experiences. You have got some work ahead of you, but I am here to tell you that it doesn’t matter where you are or who you are right now, when you really work on your goals you can achieve anything you want. When I was a teenager, I could have never imagined how happy, healthy, grateful and excited I would feel later on in my life, yet here I am writing this article. The Sky is the limit.

TEO ROSS

1. What motivates you? My motivation comes from striving to be the best version of myself whether it’s involving dancing, directing, school, etc. I am a naturally competitive person and that always gets me to push forward and not give up, as I want to be the best and the only way to get there is to just want it and have that motivation always in the back of your mind telling you what you are heading towards. With this motivation I can get myself up, even if I’m not feeling it, and head towards my goal for today, tomorrow, for the end of the year or for my life. 2. Who is your biggest inspiration?

Credits to : Move Photography

My biggest inspiration, lately, is a famous Youtuber/Actor/Director, Brandon Rogers. He is a funny, inspirational, creative director who creates comical skits of characters he plays himself. He is not afraid to put himself out there and doesn’t hold back and that’s what I love. Brandon truly is why I wanted to start creating and working on my YouTube Channel! I have been writing and planning ideas for months but have finally gotten the courage to take my first step with creating my own show on YouTube. This show is something I have always wanted to do ever since I started watching YouTube. It is a mysterious series about 9 girls who are invited to a masquerade ball at a lovely country estate, that is close to the beach. After their dinner behold the lights go out and someone is dead! Ever since I was very young my Nan and I always watched Murder Mystery shows as I loved them, there is something about solving murders and crimes that give me a buzz! So, having that passion for so long it made me want to make my own version. 3. What do you do in your spare time? I love to make movies and films when I am not dancing it’s just the most relaxing and joyful thing that I do. It brings out my creative side and lets me tell any story I want. Ever since I have gotten my first camera, I have non-stop been making videos for myself. But now that I have that passion and I know that’s what I love to do I am starting a YouTube Channel heavily inspired by all the people I love to watch. I also am familiar with editing on iMovie but have now moved to Premier Pro. I was never taught how to edit on iMovie or Premier I just went for it and learned along the way as that for me is the best way I learn. But I might need some help sometimes… 4. What is you favourite destination that you have travelled to for dancing?

Credits to : Rachel Thorncraft 58

My favourite place I have travelled to for dancing would have to be the Australian Dance Festival in Sydney. It was such an amazing experience, doing workshops throughout the day and then watching professionals perform for a competition at night. We would all go as a team and do all the dance workshops together, taught by famous choreographers. Also with performances at night it inspired us to do our best for the next day.

59

5. What is your biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment would have to be making an successful Escape Room. Just a few months ago I was in the middle of writing clues and setting up the location for this Escape Room where you were stuck inside the property of our studio and the only way to get out was to solve all the clues, however there where these little battles to the death that happened every time we completed a clue. What would happen is we would all vote, then two were drawn and went of to see who was the worthier companion so then only one would come back. I had designed it so I didn’t know any of the answers so I could be involved as well. As I said before how I love solving crimes and clues and riddles I just had to make my own escape room. All the competitors loved it and asked if I could do it again, and why not! 6. How old were you when you started dancing? I was two years old when I started dancing but right from the get go I was in the studio with my mum watching in the corner from a very young age. But when I started to get more serious with performances was probably around four or five. My first ever performance was Shrek where I played Puss in Boots and that was when I was three. So ever since then I have strived to become the best version of my self through dancing and expressing myself. That has now evolved into more acting and directing as I love to create stories using film, books, drawing, dancing, etc. Now that I have gotten my own DSLR camera, that can both record 4k videos and take amazing pictures I have strived to improve my directing skills. 7. What is your favourite style of dance? My f avourite dance style would have to be Musical Theatre. Musical Theatre involves dancing with acting and singing added, and becoming all these different characters, immersing myself into their world and entertaining people is what makes me love that style so much because it just says me all over. I have had many amazing Musical Theatre teachers that have taught me so many different things. However, my best genre of dance would be tap as I have done it for so long that I have improved to the max, of course there are always more room to improve, and with doing it for so long it becomes second nature to me.

8. If you didn’t dance what would you do? If I had to do anything other than dancing it would have to be film making and directing. I have just recently done one major project here at the studio with all my friends and since we loved it so much I have created another! If I wasn’t into dancing I would have made so many short films by now as I would have so much time on my hands. I just love making movies and shows as they can tell so much even if you don’t talk throughout the whole thing. Right now I am in the midst of making a Youtube Channel and I have watched so many videos on how to start a successful channel and I’ve just realised that the only way I can learn is to just do it. Get my camera and press record!

BRAD PEARCE DENTAL Hey Wendy, let’s chat about your role at Brad Pearce Dental... How long have you been working as a Dental Therapist at Brad Pearce Dental? 13 Years I have had the pleasure of practicing as a Dental Therapist with the BPD team. I work with a fantastic team of Dentists and staff at our Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga practices. What does a Dental Therapist do? Being a Dental Therapist means I get the privilege of providing dental treatment exclusively to children and young adults and I really enjoy it. What is the best part of your work? One of the best things about working with kids is having the opportunity to teach them that a dental visit is not necessarily something to be afraid of. In actual fact we try and make it a fun experience. Sometimes it can take a few visits before kids feel really comfortable, so establishing a good rapport from an early age is very important. It’s also wonderful to see them grow up as years go by.

64

65

What are you passionate about when it comes to your work? I am very passionate about preventive dentistry and enjoy teaching little patients and their parents about good dental habits. You will also find me in schools and preschools in the local community educating kids and staff about caring for those very important pearly whites. What is one thing you would like us to know about teeth? If there is a tooth problem, early detection through regular checkups is the key to providing simple dental treatment. I have an amazing new dental anaesthetic machine “the wand. This little machine allows a very discreet and comfortable method of numbing a tooth that might require a filling. Remember, the Child Dental benefits Scheme is there to help offset the cost of treatment if you are eligible. So call our lovely reception today to book your overdue appointment

RASPBERRY and PEPPERMINT SLICE Yep it’s raw, vegan and super versatile. Once you master the base recipe you can add whatever you like! FOR THE BASE 1 cup almonds 1/2 cup shredded coconut 2 tbs. coconut oil 1 tbs. raw cacao Pinch of salt . . FOR THE FILLING 1/2 cup coconut oil 1/2 cup canned coconut milk 1/2 cup raw cashews soaked overnight (or at least 2 hours) 1/3 raw honey or maple syrup. Pinch of salt. FOR THE ICING 1/2 cup coconut oil 3 tbs. raw cacao 1 tbs. rice maple syrup.

NOW WHAT Line a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) baking tray with baking paper In a blender or food processor place all of the base ingredients. Whiz until a crunchy butter forms. Transfer this in to the lined tin and spread out evenly, covering the entire base. Place in to the freezer. On to the filling. Rinse your food processor first. Drain and rinse the cashews. Place all of the filling ingredients in the blender Blend on medium speed until super smooth. Place the filling on top of the base and smooth out the top. Place back in to the freezer. Rinse the blender. Now for the icing. Place all of the ingredients in the blender. You don’t need to melt the coconut oil first as the friction from the blender will slowly melt it all together. Spread the icing on top of the filling and place in to Fridge. This is the basic base recipe, now you get to choose your flavour! With the peppermint slice, I added 1/2 teaspoon of spirulina and 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract or equivalent in essential oil to the filling section of the recipe and for the pink one I added 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries and a teaspoon of beetroot powder. Have fun with this recipe Sherrin Woods, @Wildly_Well

LOUISA COOKS FOOD

H

i, my name is Louisa I am 11 and I have been cooking since I was, well since I can remember. My grandmother (GMA), would sit me in my high chair and pass me pieces of pastry to play with, which she would bake (UGH) and spoons of cake batter to lick (YUM) and I guess I haven’t stopped cooking since. But enough about me... Welcome to my kitchen and to the wonder of puff pastry I love pies, tarts, croissants and all are so easy to prepare. Originally, it was created by a young French baker in 1645 for his father who was told he could only eat flour, butter, water for a health issue, so, he combined the lot and cooked the dough and it quickly became popular. However, as with most history this was disputed with the Italians who claimed the honor. Well, whoever invented the mixture it remains the same taking hours to prepare requiring the flour to be mixed with a little butter and water to form a dough which was then rolled to a rectangle and butter then fold three ways, this method was repeated. TEN times. Now I can buy ten sheets frozen from the supermarket and use a sheet when I need.

PCYC Nations of Origin

PCYC Nations of Origin 2019 PCYC 2019 Nations of Origin is an annual event that is held every year in the New South Wales July school holidays for teenagers aged between 15 and 16 years old. This year had 1364 participants who travelled from across NSW to compete, represent their Indigenous Nations and PCYC Clubs. There were 36 PCYC NSW Clubs with teams entered and out of those 36 PCYC NSW Clubs they represented 22 Indigenous Nations. There were 150 teams across 4 sports, including 70 Rugby League 7 aside teams, 16 Netball teams, 27 Football Five aside teams & 37 Basketball teams. Here at CrushitMag we were only able to cover the rugby league competition that went for two days at Raymond Terrace. You could have easily mistaken being on the set of the new Top Gun film at times due to the fighter jets flying in and out of Williamtown Air Base which was a spectacle of its own. Each team had to have a certain amount of Indigenous athletes in the team and the remainder would be Non-Indigenous. The athletes also had to have a minimum attendance record at school of 80% to compete because the PCYC want the athletes to know that there is more to life than just sport and that education is very important for their futures. There was a lot of talent on display over the two days in both the girls and boys competitions and it was amazing to watch as it was end to end action and bone crushing tackles.

90

91

In the end there had to be winners in both competitions. The boys plate final saw Kamilaroi South defeat Awabakal White. The girls plate final saw Biripi defeat Biripai. The boys cup saw Awabakal Red defeat Eora. Let’s make a note that this was the second time in three years that Awabakal Red have taken out the boy’s competition. Lastly the girls cup saw Darug West defeat Darkinjung. Just like in the boys it was the second time in three years that Darug West have taken out the girls competition. Each game that was played over the two days was played in the right spirit and showed good sportsmanship. Most importantly the event was about bringing youth together to learn about culture and being together as one for NAIDOC week celebrations. If you would like to know more information on how you can be involved with this fantastic event get in contact with your local PCYC or on the website https://www.pcycnsw.org.au/

YOU ARE ENOUGH Cassie Mendoza-Jones

Cassie is a Sydney-based kinesiologist, naturopath and coach. She is passionate about helping people to give themselves permission to stop pushing themselves so hard, and feeling like self-care, self-confidence and self-acceptance is so out of reach.

Website: www.elevatevitality.com.au 94

95

You are Enough explores why we have become so worried about what other people think of us, and what our infatuation with comparison can cause on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. If you are sick of striving, or feeling like a perfectionist comparer, here are the practical tools for getting out of the comparison trap, so that you can learn to accept yourself as you are, and revel in the sense of peace and ease that this brings. Are you sick of giving yourself a hard time? Have you had enough of comparing yourself to others? Do you feel that nothing you do is good enough? It doesn’t have to be this way. Because guess what? Your worth is innate—you can’t earn it with accomplishments or by hitting your goals … which means you can’t lose it when you think you haven’t done enough. It’s time to let go of the negative thoughts that keep telling you that you’ll only be more when you work harder … that keep you stuck, constantly comparing yourself to those around you. It’s time to understand what your body is trying to tell you when you’re burning out, pushing yourself to your limits, and chasing self-worth, achievements and perfectionism. You are enough. Knowing this starts with accepting yourself. And the shift to true self-acceptance is realising you’re already enough.

Aries

Star Signs Star Signs by Jadee Vice www.canier.com

98

ARIES is the first star sign starting from the 21ST MARCH - 19TH APRIL, with the element of fire and ruled by mars. The name Aries is Latin for ram which explains why the symbol for Aries is the ram. Characteristics of an Aries are affectionate and generous people who have a great nature. Often soft-hearted loyal people however may lack patience. Aries can benefit from mediation due to its calming effect helping Aries to relax. The Key To Success: If you were born under the sign of the ram, you should consider yourself blessed. Aries personality traits are extremely useful and they can, if put to proper use, ensure a life full of impressive achievement. You’ve got amazing willpower and initiative. There’s nothing you can’t tackle if you try. You need though, to watch out for a tendency to create a life full of difficulty, just so that you always have something to sort out. You like living “close to the edge”; but if you could only manage to stand one step back from it, a lot more of your projects would come to fruition.

Taurus

TAURUS is the second star sign ruled by Venus starting from the 20TH APRIL 20TH MAY, with the element of earth. The symbol for is the bull. Taurus people often are faithful and sensitive when it comes to love. They love feeling secure and are very respectful people. If you need to tell a Taurus anything you can be sure they are the best people to tell due to them being an extremely trustworthy sign. The Key To Success: If you are a Taurean, you should be aware that your greatest asset is your instinctive sense of justice. You can recognise a rip-off at a thousand paces and you can always find what’s fair. When you trust this, you are unerringly guided towards the right type of creative inspiration, the best sort of worldly ambition and the cleverest kind of friendship. All you ever need to do, to get on in life, is trust the natural good judgement that you sometimes feel inclined to ignore. 99

Gemini

GEMINI is my sign! which is ruled by the planet mercury and the symbol of twins which represents the Gemini dual personalities. The element of Gemini is air. Hanging with a Gemini there is never a dull moment as they are such a fun and sociable sign. Gemini are extremely creative signs who often create a world of their own in their minds when they are easily bored. Gemini due to their dual personalities often have open minds and also change moods quickly. Don’t ever tie down a Gemini, they love their freedom and being outgoing! The Key To Success: If you were born under the sign of the twins, you shouldn’t see yourself as a “split personality”. You are simply someone who can see both sides to every coin. It’s your ability to be flexible, to act on the spur of the moment and to ask the one obvious question that nobody else seems able to think of which makes you, such a powerful force in business... and such a helpful person to have as a friend.

Leo

Cancer

CANCER is the fourth sign which starts from the 21ST JUNE - 23RD JULY and has the symbol of a crab and the element of the water. The ruling planet for cancer is the moon. Cancer is a very emotional sign, who fear to be hurt and are very sensitive. Cancer are a very faithful, loyal and empathic sign which understands the pains of others. They are said to one of the most psychic signs. The Key To Success: To be a Cancerian is to be blessed with an infallible inner radar screen. It is to care, passionately, about the people who matter to you and the causes that have meaning to you. It is to know, always, what must be done and why - and never to be wrong. Yet it is also to feel your best is never good enough, even though it certainly is. All you ever have to do, to be successful, is be yourself with a little more confidence.

Leo is the fifth sign which starts on the 23RD JULY - 23RD AUGUST and has the symbol of a lion and ruled by the sun. Leo’s element is fire. Leos are a very caring and faithful sign. They love to be praised and likes a balance between home and work in their life. They are also full of energy and confident. The Key To Success: Although you were born under the sign of the lion, you often act more like a pussycat. That’s fine for quiet times but, if you ever want to make things change or get results that suit you, you need to start prowling and growling. In astrological tradition, the ruler of your sign is the Sun. Virgo is the sixth sign which starts on the Be more like it. Rise up high... and shine! 23RD AUGUST - 22ND SEPTEMBER and has the symbol of Maiden and ruled by Mercury. Virgo is an earth element. Virgo can be very introverted people who are shy and reversed on the surface. However, when they become comfortable with you which may be a slow process, they are relaxed and calm. Virgos are a kind and thoughtful sign who tell the truth and listen and give advice when asked. Virgos love to laugh and have fun as well as being very down to earth people. The Key To Success: All zodiac signs are, of course, created equal. An astrologer cannot possibly say that some are better than others to belong to. But, er... well look, if you’re quite sure nobody else is reading this, Virgo is a very special sign. There’s absolutely nothing you need to alter in order to be successful in life - other, perhaps, than your tendency to be a little too self critical at times.
