CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2021 OUR 75th ANNIVERSARY YEAR! Dear Member, how good it is to be able to report our events that actually happened in our 75th year, in spite of the difficulties we and the whole world have had dealing with Covid. Your field trial team has been as busy as ever, with secretary, Paula Gravett and her team arranging the working tests and trials in their usual excellent way, pictures for your perusal further in the book. Our first Open Show was a super show held in the lovely setting of Wellfield House. As Covid regulations demanded, we had an outdoor show, with an excellent entry for Mrs Penny Smith, who I am certain, like us all, was so happy to be back in the ring. Dogs and exhibitors were all quite in festive mode, just being out and about with like-minded friends. Pictures are in the book for your enjoyment. Our next event seemed to come around in no time at all when we hosted a Championship Show and an Open Show together, at the lovely Newark and Notts Showground, and thankfully the weather blessed us with sunshine. Our Championship show judges, Mrs Penny Carpanini (Dogs) and Mrs Christine Bailiss (Bitches) had an excellent entry of lovely Labradors to judge and were working hard throughout the day. Also, Mr Ian Jones enjoyed his very good Open Show entry of excellent dogs in the sunshine – all made for a happy relaxed show day. Just to make sure we kept up the busy time of catch-up, we have had some excellent education days with Kennel Club Trainer, Mrs Christina Chapman, all very well attended, and our students were well pleased with the excellent venues and our usual high standard of catering – thanks to our wonderful catering ladies who help so much to make these days successful. Onwards to our last show of the year in December. This was a first time in the new and excellent indoor venue at Newark, The Lady Eastwood Hall. Our two judges, Mr Mark Rawlinson judging dogs, and Mr Andy Metcalf judging bitches, were extremely hard working and the whole day had a wonderfully jolly Christmas theme. All exhibitors enjoyed a fabulous array of goodies – home-made mince pies, cookies, Christmas cake and a huge celebration cake for our 75th anniversary, and non-alcoholic wine flowed throughout the day, our huge Christmas tree was generously given by Mr Dan Teasdale and beautifully decorated by Penny Smith - our shop and raffles were well supported which greatly helps the club funds – A big “thank you” for this essential help. A very happy day! With the hope now that the pandemic may be somewhat manageable for the future. I would like to thank all your committee and officers for their hard work and continued support over the year. My best wishes to you all. MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB Editorial As I write this editorial 2021 is drawing to a close, and I’m sure many people will be glad to see it go. This year has been MCLRC’s 75th. Anniversary, as the Club was founded in 1946. However, the yearbook isn’t quite as old, and this one is our 74th edition. The earlier part of the year was still constrained by the Covid restrictions of 2020 and many Clubs, including MCLRC had to cancel or re-schedule their shows. Consequently, when things did start to open up a bit in early summer, and life returned to a rather more normal pattern, there was an abundance of shows with Clubs “doubling up” and running back-to-back events to try to accommodate all the shows that had been postponed. This gave exhibitors an opportunity to make up for lost time, and some people have had an excellent few months in the show ring in the later part of the year. Congratulations to all of them. MCLRC has managed to run four shows in 2021, despite the difficulties, holding the postponed January Open Show in July at Michael and Judi Neachells’ home at Orgreave, the postponed 2020 Championship Show in September, along with the September Open Show at Newark, and finally the 2021 Championship Show, again at Newark, in December. Each of these events was very successful and there are photos of the main winners in this publication, for which, many thanks to Judi Neachell. The Club also held an informal “mini show” at the end of May, with restricted numbers, which was much appreciated by those who were able to attend, and two judging seminars; the first one in June, where Christina Chapman presented the K.C.’s Points of the Dog, combining it with a Breed Appreciation Day presented by Marion Hopkinson, and the second in October, when Christina Chapman presented the Conformation and Movement seminar. Both were very well attended and there are reports and photos in this Yearbook. After last year’s book being a digital only copy, it’s good to see the Yearbook back in its traditional format, however, the Club can only afford to continue producing it in this way, if sufficient people support us by submitting kennel reviews. There are rather fewer of these this time, but then it has been a very unusual year. Here’s hoping that 2022 will see things returning to normal and that we can continue enjoying the hobby we share. I hope you enjoy this yearbook and wish you all the best for 2022. Jenny Dobson, MCLRC Yearbook Editor

Coat colour genetics for the dilute gene in Labradors D Locus (DNA marker tested – C.22G > A) Associated with the dilution or lightening effect of solid colours, with D being the dominant allele, the dd genotype results in the diluted effect (like grey, blue, silver, lilac and champagne). Possible Genotypes: DD – does not carry the dilute, has 0 copies and will NOT pass dilute to offspring. Dd – d ilute carrier - has 1 copy of dilute d, and 1 normal allele D, has 50% chance of passing dilute to offspring. dd – d ilute phenotype - has 2 copies of dilute dd, will display dilution in their own coat and will ALWAYS pass dilute to any offspring.

PUPPY REGISTER

The club maintains a popular and very successful ‘puppy register’, and also an ‘older puppies and adults’ register, which any member having puppies for sale may arrange to have them included on it. This free service is exclusively for fully paid up MCLRC members only, and although free of charge, we do ask for £10 which is donated to a canine charity. Please contact the Puppy Register Co-ordinator, whose details are included below. Forms can be

downloaded if required from our website www.mclrc.net or contact the Hon. Secretary/Puppy Register Co-ordinator, who will forward an application form. Potential owners are sent the register of puppies for sale including a very useful and informative ‘advice to the puppy buyer’ sheet. For further details please contact: Julia Lewis Mob. 07774 244051 Email: jlewisuk@aol.com 20

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB Advice for the Puppy Buyer THE TEMPERAMENT IS MOST IMPORTANT. YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO SEE THE DAM ALONG WITH HER PUPPIES From the Breeder of your puppy, you should receive the following: 1. A signed Pedigree Form 2. A signed Kennel Club Registration Certificate 3. An understanding and agreement to any Kennel club endorsements 4. Details of your puppy’s micro-chip 5. A n advice sheet on your puppy’s vaccination programme (until the vaccination programme is completed, your puppy must not mix with other dogs) 6. A Diet Sheet 7. Advice on training of your puppy 8. A Worming Form (showing the dates your puppy was wormed whilst with the Breeder) 9. A copy of both Sire & Dam’s Hip Score Certificate & Eye Test Certificate PLEASE BE AWARE, THE CERTIFICATES WILL ONLY SHOW THE STATUS OF THE SIRE AND DAM, AND CANNOT BE TAKEN AS A GUARANTEE OF THE STATUS OF THE PUPPY You are strongly advised to have made an appointment with your vet, as soon as possible after the purchase of your puppy, for a health check. At the same time, you can discuss with him/her, the worming and vaccination programmes. Your puppy should already be identified by microchip. You are strongly advised to take out insurance for your puppy (usually the breeder will offer a temporary insurance package with your puppy). The buyer of a Labrador Retriever puppy or adult should be aware of the possible diseases, both genetic and otherwise, to which the breed is prone. KC/BVA HIP SCORE CERTIFICATE Hip dysplasia is a term which encompasses several specific developmental and other abnormalities involving the hip joint. The lower the score, the less the degree of Hip Dysplasia. The score range is 0 - 106. The breed’s mean score is 15. KC/BVA EYE CERTIFICATE & ECVO (European Eye Certificate) These examinations are for several hereditary eye conditions. Certificates are valid for one year only. You are advised to check the date of the examination on the relevant certificate. KC/BVA HIP ELBOW DYSPLASIA SCHEME The lower the overall grade (graded on a scale of 0 - 3), the less the degree of elbow dysplasia (not all breeders participate in this scheme). 21

KENNEL CLUB BREED STANDARD FOR THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch section of the Kennel Club website here www. the-kennel-club.org.uk for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure. However if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as undesirable or highly undesirable it is strongly recommended that it should not be rewarded in the show ring. GENERAL APPEARANCE: Strongly built, short-coupled, very active; broad in skull; broad and deep through chest and ribs; broad and strong over loins and hindquarters. CHARACTERISTICS: Good-tempered, very agile (which precludes excessive body weight or excessive substance). Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water Adaptable, devoted companion. TEMPERAMENT: Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness. HEAD AND SKULL: Skull broad with defined stop; clean-cut without fleshy cheeks. Jaws of medium length, powerful not snipey. Nose wide, nostrils well developed. EYES: Medium size, expressing intelligence and good temper; brown or hazel. EARS: Not large or heavy, hanging close to head and set rather far back. MOUTH: Jaws and teeth strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. NECK: Clean, strong, powerful, set into well placed shoulders. FOREQUARTERS: Shoulders long and well laid back, with upper arm of near equal length, placing legs well under body. Forelegs well boned and straight from elbow to ground when viewed from either front or side. BODY: Chest of good width and depth, with well sprung barrel ribs - this effect not to be produced by carrying excessive weight. Level topline. Loins wide, short-coupled and strong. HINDQUARTERS: Well developed, not sloping to tail; well-turned stifle. Hocks well let down, cowhocks highly undesirable. FEET: Round, compact; well arched toes and well developed pads. TAIL: Distinctive feature, very thick towards base, gradually tapering towards tip, medium length, free from feathering, but clothed thickly all round with short, thick, dense coat, thus giving ‘rounded’ appearance described as ‘otter’ tail. May be carried gaily but should not curl over back. GAIT/ MOVEMENT: Free, covering adequate ground; straight and true in front and rear. COAT: Distinctive feature, short dense without wave or feathering, giving fairly hard feel to the touch; weather resistant undercoat. COLOUR: The only correct colours are wholly black, yellow or liver/ chocolate. Yellows range from light cream to red fox. Small white spot on chest and the rear of front pasterns permissible. SIZE: Ideal height at withers: dogs: 56-57cms. (22-22½ins.); bitches: 55-56cms. (21½-22ins.). 22

FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog. NOTE: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Registered charity No. 1059122

The charity covers a large chunk of England, well the South, East and much of the Central bit as the name suggests and Chris Bailliss (Tissalian) is the co-ordinator for much of the region covered by Midland Counties. The charity can assist with rehoming and may also be in a position to assist in emergency situations for example where people are unexpectedly taken ill or are facing financial difficulty with veterinary costs and if you are aware of anyone within our catchment who may benefit from the help of the charity please contact Chris in the first instance. (Details can be found on the charity website www.loveyourlabrador.co.uk) In recent years the charity has found that owners are tending to rehome young, fit and healthy dogs by themselves using their own various social media outlets and only turning to the charity when there is urgency or health or behavioural issues or great age. This has resulted in far fewer dogs to rehome but each case tending to be far more complicated to place and far more expensive for the charity as we commit to assist with on-going problems. We are seldom daunted and where we can help we will endeavour to do so, like Dolly who came to the charity as an eight week old pup with a significant palate defect, conventional wisdom has tended towards euthanasia as they can struggle to suck effectively and subsequently there is a risk of aspiration and nasal infections or pneumonia but Dolly has lived a normal active life so far for seven years, eating or probably wolfing down the large kibble of Royal Canin Labrador. I am not suggesting they will all do as well but without trying there is no way of knowing and Dolly is a beautiful affectionate example of the benefit of a little bit of ‘wait and see’. Since Dolly the charity have also homed Rodney who has a cleft running through Rodney who has been rehomed. both the hard and soft palate, repair is possible but our practical experience so far seems to suggest these dogs can lead happy, active, normal lives without surgical correction just by modifying their diet. Owners will be well aware that food seldom touches the inside of their Labrador’s mouth for long and their teeth are mostly used to destroy precious heirlooms rather than chewing kibble. Dolly and Rodney are typical, lively, happy Labradors enjoying family life who could easily have been euthanased but as well as doing the utmost to breed healthy dogs there is a moral responsibility to all the pups bred and the charity will help where it can. This has been another difficult year for many and at the same time as wishing you and your dogs every health and happiness in the New Year, I would ask you to also use your dogs as a way of reaching out to your family and friends who may be quietly struggling with all that has been going on, there is no better way to chat than on a walk with your dogs and no better excuse to meet up and catch up. PORTRAIT OF OUR JUDGE 2022 Championship Show (Dogs) Sharon Lambert (Mattand) My love of Labradors (in fact, any dogs) began as a child, and growing up we had a black Labrador, Paddy. When he passed away, I begged and pleaded for another, but was told by mum, “You can have as many as you like when you have your own home.” Little did I know then what a passion they would become… We are a small show / breeder kennel, based in Tibshelf, Derbyshire, who strive to breed well-tempered, healthy, good looking labradors. My affix comes from my two sons` names, Matthew and Andrew. We bought our first Labrador back in 1988, Sam (Sh Ch Beltarn Diuma of Newinn x Boothgates Hot Scoop for Brandhams) who was purely bought as a pet, but through him I caught the “showing bug”. In 1989 I went back to the same breeder Alison Brandley (BRANDHAMS) and this time asked for a dog to show and I got Oscar (Brandhams Show Stopper: Boothgates Kountry Kraft x Brandhams Hot Choice) a beautiful black dog with the gentlest of temperaments. From the first litter he sired I bought a bitch, Abby: Dumbledale Blue Moon, thus started my original breeding line, which I still have to this day. In 2008, purely by chance, an opportunity came along to purchase a black bitch, going back to Show Stopper, we called her Polly: Amberstead Dark and Stormy over Mattand (Sh Ch Silver Suede over Rocheby x Dakross Lady in Satin at Amberstead). I am forever grateful to Dave and Carol Dawn (Amberstead) as this bitch has helped take me to where I am today. I own and show the three recognized colours, and over the last few years have started taking an interest in training and working my dogs. I feel privileged, to have been asked to judge dogs for such a prestigious club and I look forward to the appointment. Sharon Lambert 26

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW Held at Newark Showground on 12th September 2021 DOGS VETERAN DOG (4-2) Sh.Ch. Millroseglen Make My Day with Meadowvillabs. 7 years 1st McCrory’s yellow, won by virtue of his front construction. Excellent long sloping shoulders, good legs feet and pasterns, strong level top line with barrel ribs, short loin set into powerful well constructed hindquarters with good tail-set. He has a strong masculine head that is pleasing and kindly. Well shown at one with his handler he covered the ground with ease on the move. An excellent example of the breed. 2nd Jenner’s Rossacre Trail Blazer at Lyjansen. Pleasing black that carries his 10 years with ease. Well presented in good fit condition but not the ribs and shoulder placement of the winner. SPECIAL WORKING DOG (2) 1st Percival’s Wynfaul The Wizard JW. Delightful black with a beautiful masculine head and gorgeous melting expression in the eyes that really relates to you. This is so lacking in the dogs of today and is one of the true trademarks of this breed. It was this feature more than anything that was the deciding factor in the close decisions in many of the classes. Exemplary neck and shoulders good legs pasterns and feet, barrel ribs, strong top line set into good workmanlike hindquarters all make for a strong functional overall package. Nice dog. 2nd Jenner’s Rossacre Trail Blazer at Lyjansen. (2nd in Veteran) MINOR PUPPY DOG (7-3) 1st Hopkinson’s Centenalee Sail Away to Rochby. Well grown 7 month yellow whose good overall balance won him the class. Nice kind masculine head but a little full in the eye. He has very good neck and shoulders, bone and well formed tight feet, a level top line, good tail set and strongly made hindquarters, all this makes for a free true mover. This is an eye-catching youngster that should have an exciting future ahead of him. 2nd Lewis’ Crammondkirk Buckley. 7 month black that is very well presented but very raw as yet. He scores heavily over the others in the class with his neck and long sloping shoulders reflected in the clean, free, strong front movement. A charming young dog but rather too round in eye. 3rd Smith’s Flyenpyg Pie Eyed. PUPPY DOG (5-2) 1st Keydella Krazy Times. 9 month black really playing up giving his handler a hard time and making judging him difficult. However, he took my eye having all the things I love in a young male show Labrador. Fully grown he has superb overall balance presenting a clean-lined outline that is balanced standing and on the move. On closer examination he has the head, neck, barrel ribs, bone, long supple muscle development and power, shoulder placement and overall balance I look for and had style and that extra eye-catching element that held my attention. He moves with ease covering the ground effortlessly. All topped off with a beautiful head and kind eye. 36

This dog needs time and badly needs schooling if he is to achieve his potential at the top of the leader board but I feel he has it there. I loved him. 2st Hutchinson’s Glosmere Ragamuffin. Another lovely young black dog with all the credentials to take him to the top. Pretty well mature already he is thicker set and heavier in type than the winner. Well shown in good fit condition he moves freely also covering the ground with ease. He is a very different type to the winner presenting me with a tough decision but in the end it came down to my preference for his rival’s head and expression. Who knows on another day it could have been different. A super dog. 3rd Smith’s Flyenpyg Pie Eyed. SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG (5-2) 1st McLellan’s Saranden Shadeauxplay. 12 month black, an easy winner here. I appreciated his overall balanced profile. He won the class on his strong neck, long sloping shoulders and clean uncluttered front movement that shows a good reach going forward moving from the shoulders not just from the elbows. Nice head and expression. He still has a lot of developing to do but it’s all there to come. A pleasing type. 2nd Smith’s Bruadarach Braenuth. 8 month chocolate giving such a lot away in maturity and development to the other two in the class. He has a pleasing head shape and scored on his long sloping shoulders and strong neck. His movement although free with a good reach and drive reflects his immaturity being somewhat untidy still. 3rd Grummitt’s Manorwell Danny Boy. JUNIOR DOG (8-2) A really good class with closely contested placings making for difficult decisions. However very exciting to judge and confirms to me that the breed is in good hands with all these quality young stud dogs waiting in the wings. Very much a case of not enough first prize cards! 1st Woodley’s Alkamhurst Moment of Truth. 17 month black conforming to my interpretation of the standard in all respects as did all the placed dogs in this class. Good balanced head with a kind expression, strong workmanlike body with barrel ribs, good double coat that’s not too soft to the touch, well clothed tail carried well on the move, strong sound feet and pasterns well proportioned hindquarters and moves with a satisfying free and easy gait really covering the ground. A real “stallion” young dog. 2nd Kent’s Trewinnard The Tailor. Same age yellow and such a gorgeous young dog too with a most delightful kind expression that speaks to you. Again, I could find nothing that did not appeal to me about him and I am confident that with added maturity he will feature often in the breed top honours list. Sadly, for me a decision had to be made on the day and today the black dog won out on the “stallion” look nothing more. 3rd Johnson’s Cremino Calabrese. A yellow whose overall quality warrants a critique too. Typical of this small kennel that routinely bring out really excellent youngsters with all the breed credentials that only need time to fulfill their true potential, this boy took my eye too. He has that really clean-cut classic outline that cannot be fudged by grooming or cleaver handling tactics. Lacking the muscle bulk and luxuriant double coats of the two above him today I am confident these will come in time for him to join the hall of fame. And there’s no crime just in immaturity in my book. Loved him! 37

YEARLING DOG (6) 1st Reynold’s Sh. Ch. Carromer Chippendale. Wow what a dog! He’s stunning! It would be a crime if he wasn’t already a champion and was an easy class winner here today. Fully mature yellow of quality all through from a delightful kind masculine head through to his well-clothed otter tail. Very pleasing confident masculine bearing to this dog that excels in a clean strong top line and overall outline that he maintained on the move. Good barrel ribs, strong legs with workmanlike feet powerful hindquarters and an effortless uncluttered gait. What not to like? He was my out and out CC winner until it came to the open class. Nevertheless, I had to call him into mix when considering the Dog CC and he only lost out to the two older dogs on maturity that gave them the edge with a firmness of body running round the ring. Lovely dog. 2nd Percival’s Wynfaul Windrush. What a nice name that goes well with a thoroughly nice specimen! This young black really only lost out on maturity and that’s not a fault. Beautiful masculine dog having the long sloping shoulders, strong workmanlike neck, powerful hindquarters, barrel ribs, double coat and sweet kind head and expression that empathises with his handler. Very nice dog well shown in good condition. 3rd Gartland’s Knoydar Nixon. SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (3-1) 1st Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin at Lynquest. Strong, masculine, well-boned. freemoving yellow shown in good condition. I’m not a fan of the full round eye that has become very much a trend these days getting away from the typical Labrador head and expression, but he has much to recommend him. 2nd Hill’s Kimbajak Full Golden Monty of Waggador. Obviously not at ease with the show ring giving his handler a hard time. Quite a pleasant looking dog with good shoulders but some issues that concerned me. NOVICE DOG (4-1) 1st Gartland’s Knoydar Nixon. Placed 3rd in Yearling. A well-boned heavier make of dog than the majority I placed today but this yellow appealed because of his no-nonsence, workmanlike good type, sweet, kindly, masculine head and overall soundness standing and on the move. Some would call him an ‘old fashioned Labrador. Surprised to find him still in Novice. 2nd Lewis’ Crammondkirk Buckley. (2nd. MPD) 3rd Moody’s Trendlewood Ebony And Ivory. UNDERGRADUATE DOG (2) 1st Perkins’ Carromer Tegulia by Keeninspires. Pleasing masculine dog shown in good condition. Moves freely and with drive. 2. G artland’s Pollham Picalo at Knoydar. Yellow excelling in bone and ribs. Sound free mover a very nice type only loosing today on ring presence which is understandable owing to recent severe Covid restrictions. GRADUATE DOG (3) 1st Young’s Potterspiney Silas JW. Sweet kindly yellow of good breed type. Nicely made all through scoring on head, eye shape and expression. Very successfully presented by his talented young handler who brings out his best attributes. 2nd Perkins’ Keeninspires Houdini. Soundly made young black that moves well and stylishly. 3st Grummitt’s Suttonpark Phoenix at Manorwell. 38

POSTGRADUATE DOG (6 -1) 1st Ayres and Jackson’s Hannabee To Hull ‘n Back with Musubi. Upstanding and stylish black that won this class with ease. His well-balanced body proportions were reflected in his workmanlike, free and supple movement that covered the ground well. My only issue with this dog was a “boot-button eye” spoiling that gentle Labrador head and expression. 2nd Lesley’s Sleddarwood Sako Flyer over Steeleigh JW. Overall, a nice type darker yellow. Strongly made, workmanlike dog, eager, free and easy mover, well presented in good condition. A rather hard expression detracted from an otherwise pleasing headpiece. 3rd Meredith’s Linjor Lucca. MID LIMIT DOG (5-2) 1st Rawlinson’s Shanorrell Black Sabbath at Halshimoor. Beautiful, eye-catching yellow. Clear winner here. I liked this dog’s make and shape all through scoring with a firm strong top line and good overall body balance all topped with well proportioned head and sweet soft expression in the eyes. 2nd Brown’s Ramsayville Revolver. Classic type black that with more experience will gain in confidence and ring presence. Beautiful head and expression showing his undoubted sweet disposition. His extra length in the loin lost him the top place nevertheless a super dog and one to watch. 3rd Ellis and Matulla’s Dolwen Coleman JW. LIMIT DOG (12-3) 1st McLellan’s Saranden Pensacola. Stylish, soundly made strong chocolate with pleasing head and expression, He is excellent in all departments especially movement covering the ground well. He didn’t have the depth of double coat and tail of the second placed dog but his overall sportsmanlike type and build just swung the class in his favour. 2nd Dodd’s Carrigame Moonshine. This excellent black has such a lovely head and expression and excels in coat and tail with well-proportioned body. He is of a type that has sadly fallen out of fashion in recent years, more’s the pity. I really liked this dog. 3rd Meredith’s Tweedledum Off The Record. OPEN DOG (5 -1) 1st Grummitt and Dempsey’s Irish Sh.Ch. Dromtacker Made To Order. Two very good dogs headed this class. The yellow winning marginally by virtue of his well-moulded head and sweet expression. I was looking for masculinity but with a kindliness and empathy in the eyes that can be difficult to see if the eyes are too dark. Classic yellow type whose workmanlike good looks are timeless. A sound moving dog that commands attention as he goes round the ring with little to find fault with. A gorgeous exhibit. Dog CC and on referee’s decision BOS. 2nd Hodge’s Sh.Ch. Naiken East Meets West JW. This was not an easy decision and I agonized over it with so little separating these two first class animals. Both could hold their own among the best company in the world. A noteworthy black. Res CC. 3rd Logan’s Sh.Ch. Madgack Mulberry Minocqua. Judge: Penny Carpanini

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW Held at Newark Showground on 12th December 2021 Many thanks to all the exhibitors who presented me with an excellent entry. It was lovely to get back into the ring for this show, which was originally scheduled for April. The new venue was light and airy and fostered a good atmosphere. The entry was good considering we were entering a new period of Covid restrictions. In general, I was pleased with most of the winners, but the real strength in depth was restricted to the higher classes. I noticed several that presented outstanding outlines but tended to be a little narrow in front and this resulted in disappointing movement. This is not something I have previously noticed when judging in the UK. DOGS VETERAN DOG (6-3) 1st Robert’s Stormrose Golden Fortune JW SH.CM VW. This boy could certainly show the youngsters a thing or two about movement! Really strode out round the ring with plenty of drive whilst moving straight and true. Strongly made throughout, with a handsome head, good reach of neck and well angulated throughout. Strong bone into well-shaped feet. In agreement with my co-judge, Best Veteran in Show. 2nd Broadburn and Lawson’s Lindall Just Do It At Tipbear. Ten year old black, really enjoying his day out. Kind head and expression, well angulated shoulders with good bone and well shaped feet. Moved particularly well for his age. 3rd Bold’s Shaymiloney Senate JW. MINOR PUPPY DOG (10-2) 1st Tulloch’s Tullochmohr Final Hurrah. Well balanced puppy, shown in excellent condition with a fabulous double coat. Kind head and expression, with a really kind eye, good reach of neck and excellent tail-set. Moved well, but movement still needs to tighten a little. Looks as If he should have a good future. Best Puppy Dog. 2nd Hopkinson’s Rocheby Old Salt. Another promising puppy, who should develop well. Good type, with attractive head, good reach of neck, with excellent lay of shoulders and well angulated front. Moved well. I am sure these two will change places often. 3rd Allen’s Timouron Secret Liaison. PUPPY DOG (13-6) 1st Tulloch’s Tullochmohr Final Hurrah. 1st. MPD. 2nd Lewis’s Crammondirk Buckley. Very well constructed black, although a little raw at present. Kind head and expression, good reach of neck, level top-line and good tailset. Moved well. Should develop into a quality dog. 3rd Smith’s Flyenpyg Pie Eyed JW. SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG (6-3) 1st Hutchinson’s Glosmere Ragamuffin. Deep bodied black, in excellent coat and condition. Good level topline and well angulated both front and rear. Moved with drive. To be critical, I would prefer more length of leg, but he has many attributes. 2nd Braddon’s Trendlewood The Man. Well made yellow with kind head and expression. Clean outline with a good reach of neck. Good bone and correct pasterns into well shaped feet. Moved well. Preferred the shoulder angulation of the winner. 3rd Smith’s Braudarach Braenuth. 48

JUNIOR DOG (3-1) 1st O’Brien’s Maxfield Hugo Boss. Good type of yellow. Strongly built throughout, with good neck into level top-line. Deep well-sprung chest with good angulations to quarters and well-muscled throughout. Moved well. Little coat today, which spoiled the overall balance. 2nd Davis’s Edwin For Deaki De Loyre De Aralla. Nice type of black, well angulated throughout. Deep, well sprung chest and excellent shaped feet. Movement a little erratic and would prefer a better tail-set. YEARLING DOG (6-1) 1st Woodley’s Alkhamhurst Moment Of Truth. Well balanced dog with strong level topline and good tail-set. Strong bone into well-shaped feet. In good coat and condition. Powerful quarters with excellent width. Moved well. 2nd Lawson’s Carriegame Carry On Camping Avec Isaiki. Good quality chocolate, who was unlucky to come across the winner. Really well balanced with a kind head and expression. Well angulated throughout with a level topline and tail-set. Strong bone and well-shaped feet. Moved correctly with plenty of drive. 3rd Wilson’s Stelainros Wabana. SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (2) 1st Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin At Lynquest. Good type of yellow. Strongly muscled, which allowed him to drive well from the rear. Well balanced head, good level topline. Not in his best coat today, which spoiled the overall picture. 2nd Hill’s Kimbajak Full Golden Monty At Waggador. Kind headed yellow of good type. Lovely eye-colour. MCLRC congratulates

THE NEW CHAMPIONS of 2020 and 2021 Unfortunately, as no awards have been issued since the first lockdown in March 2020 (due to the Kennel Club’s new computer system not being ready) there are no official lists of new champions. Consequently, these are the show champions only, as I have no way of checking the field trial champions that have been made up during this time.

FIELD TRIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT We managed to hold two working tests this year, one at Roxby and one at Stoke Rochford. Both went really well. The one at Roxby was a Novice in the morning followed by an Open in the afternoon. Then we move onto the trials. We had a Novice Trial at Roxby, which went really well. It was good ground, and we had a good laugh. Then we went to the Redbourne for another Novice, again good ground, good company, and good dogs’ work. Then we had a two day Open at Stately Vale, good ground, good people, and good two days. I have decided to step down from Field Trial Secretary. I have enjoyed doing it and will miss you all. I hope you are all successful in the future and hope to see you all around. I will still be around the dog world and will still be going to Chatsworth to help out, so I hope to see you all there. Have a good season and catch you up soon. Paula Gravett

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB

‘Mini Show’

SATURDAY 30th May 2021 Wellfield House Judge: Barbara Cherry I would like to thank the Midland Counties Labrador Retriever Club for their kind invitation to officiate at their event. I am sure everybody wants to thank Judy and Michael for allowing the Club to use their lovely grounds. As most dog owners and their dogs have had little opportunity to socialise during this pandemic, with no shows and only occasional restricted ringcraft classes, there has been no chance of groups meeting – not a good thing for youngsters. Luckily the sun shone and being outdoors with brollies, gazebos, etc., things seemed back to normal. This small outdoor event was so welcome. The babies were stars – not one dog backed off or appeared nervous. For a strange face, masked up, with glasses and smelling of hand-sanitizer to go over the puppies, could have been very off-putting for them. Their tails continued to wag...... in fact, the whole of their rear ends wagged! The overall quality of the exhibits was excellent, and I didn’t have one dog that was an inferior specimen. Often 6 or more exhibits appeared in a class, all good quality well-constructed animals that moved well and were balanced and sound. This made some difficult decisions when placing them – a good thing for the breed. Several breeders had dogs exhibited in several classes and they looked like clones. There is a lot to be said for the clever breeders breeding to a type.

84

In my opinion, although I don’t have the pleasure of owning a Labrador, the breed is in a very good place with many knowledgeable breeders breeding to type sound well-constructed animals for themselves and others to show. The Club seemed to have many younger exhibitors who seemed enthusiastic, and some excellent young handlers who readily helped some of the slightly senior exhibitors run their dogs. Often young people are not apparent in some breeds. These younger enthusiasts can only be good for the breed moving on. I was pleased with the final line-up and the three principal winners were topflight exhibits. I loved the femininity of my final winner. She was so balanced and sound, standing well and moving soundly, lashing her tail. The runner-up (a male) was masculine with a lovely profile, good to handle and totally sound. The puppy, this time a black, was a very balanced baby with loads of confidence and ring presence. A lovely day was had by all judging from the smiles of the exhibitors and a group of happy dogs. It was good to see how supportive you all were with your fellow exhibitors and dogs. A special thankyou to the Club for the beautiful arrangement of flowers – the colours were lovely, and I gather they were grown in Yorkshire. Barbara Cherry

Seminar Days 2021 Despite the covid restrictions in place for the earlier part of the year, MCLRC has managed to hold two seminar days this year, the first one in June.

Breed Appreciation Day Hosted by Marion Hopkinson and Points of the dog tutor Christina Chapman Saturday 12th June 2021 This was very popular, fully subscribed and was very informative and entertaining. Marion Hopkinson gave a presentation on the Labrador, with some excellent photographs and diagrams to help the participants understand the various points. Those who wished to, then had an opportunity to undertake the K.C. multiple choice examination, and Christina Chapman presented the K.C. points of the dog seminar. An excellent lunch was provided for everyone – a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Conformation and Movement Seminar

Hosted by Christina Chapman 17th October 2021 The second seminar was held in October, when Christina Chapman presented the K.C. Conformation and Movement seminar. Again, this was a very successful day, as can be seen in the photos of this event. A couple of attendees submitted the following reports:Midland counties Labrador club hosted a fabulous training day, for aspiring judges and general information to anybody interested in confirmation and movement of the dog. The seminar was presented by the extremely knowledgeable and humorous Mrs Christina Chapman, who is an accredited Kennel Club trainer. It was a full day starting at 10:30am with coffee. The morning was spent going through skeletal, muscle and bites of the dogs, making clear that often various breeds have their own breed standard for a correct bite. It was so interesting to see the correct and incorrect movements of various breeds. A beautiful Labrador was available for us to view as part of Christina’s conformation tutorial, which included Christina Chapman was watching the movement of the dog. presenting. A superb Ploughman lunch, with a choice of deserts and tea/coffee were provided, which were delicious. The afternoon included a fun and humorous exercise, which we all had to pair up for some doggy fun, which in my opinion really did drive home how conformation really does reflect in the movement of the dog. A quick afternoon coffee break followed, which included cream scones and cake…what a treat! 86

There was a short period of questions and then we were issued with our certificates of attendance. The seminar ended approximately 4:15pm. Wendy Southwell I attended the Conformation and Movement Seminar delivered by Christina Chapman and hosted by the Midland Counties Labrador Club. The day started by discussing the conformation of a dog, and how a dog’s conformation will affect their movement. After the morning session we broke for lunch of a most delicious ploughman’s and scones. The afternoon session began and extended the knowledge we had gained from the morning. We discussed movement as a group and then had, what can only be described, as an aerobics session, where we simulated common faults seen in dogs’ movements (crabbing, over tracking, etc.). Despite being amusing, it really made you think and recognise correct and incorrect movement. Christina’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the seminar informative, engaging, and interesting. Thank you to Midland Counties Labrador Club and Christina for a thoroughly enjoyable day. Kyle Bridgman

LAKEMEADOW LABRADORS Here is what has been happening at Lakemeadow during the Covid lockdowns and restrictions… In late October 2020, Freya (A Sense of Pleasure’s Odine at Lakemeadow IMP DEU) joined us from Katrin Korff’s ASOP kennel in Germany, and what an absolute joy she has been. Many thanks to Katrin for entrusting me with this lovely girl. Looking forward to getting into the showring with her in 2022. In April 2021, Pearly (Lakemeadow Love To Dream) with help from Gilbert (Shaymiloney Senate JW) gave birth to the “fab four”.

Photos courtesy of Jenny Edwards

Lakemeadow Phoenix Nights, owned by Mica Camp-Holcroft, will hopefully be out in the showring in 2022, and Lakemeadow Dream Chaser, owned by Marcelina Wszołek-Duda, is already making a name for herself in Poland, with several Best Puppy in Breed awards. Best of luck to these two. 102

STEELEIGH IN LOVING MEMORY OF:

Steeleigh Hot To Handle JW 2 RCCs (Sybil) 28/06/2008 - 29/12/2021

Can’t believe Sybil has gone, as she was so fit & well, right up till her last few days. Highlights the need to treasure every day with your dogs as you never know when it will be their last. Loved and missed by Leigh Lesley 116

STEELEIGH IN LOVING MEMORY OF:

Steeleigh Secrets Out JW (Denzel) 10/06/2011 - 10/12/2021

My year ended in the worst possible way with the loss of both my golden oldies Denzel and Sybil less than 3 weeks apart. Both were such colourful characters with hearts of gold who revelled in the limelight at every show they went to. They have left a bigger hole in my heart than I could have ever imagined, and I very much feel their passing is the end of an era, the like of which I will never see again. Run free my angels until we meet again and thank you for all the joy you both brought into my life.
