CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2018 Dear Member,

this year saw all our shows very well entered and beautifully run, and also an extra Championship show. There is a complete set of pictures of all the shows for your enjoyment in the book. Hats off to you Ryan, and along with our Show Manager, Michael Neachell, they all went like clockwork and were much appreciated by all the exhibitors. Last year’s events were all a resounding success from our first, the January Open Show at Staveley, to our December JLC Championship Show at Stoneleigh. The working tests and trials have enjoyed some wonderful grounds (so very generously given) and some excellent working dogs and judging. All can be seen in the book. We have an excellent Club shop very ably run by Mrs Penny Smith that not only gives people the opportunity to purchase high quality items, but is an important part of our revenue. That brings me on to the news that our Treasurer, Mrs Joan Walters will retire from the post in April. What a TREASURE Joan has been to take this job after David’s death and she has managed the accounts in such meticulous fashion for these last years – Joan you are, and have been, a marvel in this very time consuming job!!! Please continue to support your events, be they Show or Field, as without you – no Show or Trial. I wish you all a very Happy, Healthy and Successful 2019. Marion Hopkinson, Chair

2018 has undoubtedly been a very good year for your events, of which the reports and many photographs appear later on in the book. We have also had quite a lot of changes to the committees who keep this club running so smoothly. Early in the year we had the very good fortune to have Mrs Paula Gravett take on the very busy task of Field Trial Secretary and you will see in the book how well our Field Trials and Working tests have done this season under Paula’s watchful eye. A very big Thank You for all her (and her father’s) hard work. Another important job to be undertaken is the Membership Secretary, now being done by Ms Sharon Lambert. This is another year round, constant job which gets extremely busy from New Year onwards (please note the new annual subscription fees). Frank (and Margaret Gawthorpe) have carried out this role for so many years I cannot remember them not doing it – so a HUGE THANK YOU to them both. And now to tell you of another important change with our new Show Secretary, Mr Ryan Ennis Holden. This is a very big task, done previously by our Vice Chair, Mrs Jackie Hodge for many years, always organising our 3 shows, plus whatever else we have in that category being so well run with everything absolutely ‘on tap’, Jackie is a hard act to follow. Ryan has made the job ‘his own‘, with real enthusiasm and

STOP PRESS Just as the Yearbook was about to go to press we received the sad news that Dr Christopher F. Green, husband of Debbie, former Field Trial Secretary of M.C.L.R.C. for many years, had died aged 60 years, after a short illness. He was a renowned agronomist and had been a very generous sponsor and patron of the Club’s field trials. He will be very sadly missed. Our sympathy goes to Debbie and the family. MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB Editorial that Michael and Judi Neachell invite us each year to hold this event at their lovely home. Many thanks to them on behalf of all members. This year I have included in the Yearbook some articles that demonstrate how our Labradors can enrich our leisure life, beyond competing and winning in the show ring or in a field trial. I do hope you will enjoy reading these articles, as members share the pleasures of “living with a Labrador”, and I would like to thank all of those who have contributed, along with some lovely photos, to this section of the book: Emma Stoker for information on rally and canicross; Anita Jarvis for sharing the joy she has derived from her Labrador, Butty; Becci Hodge for her notes and photos on labs and agility, and Sharon Rogers for her article on picking up with the “oldies”. Vet, Robert White has again kindly produced a brief but valuable article for the Yearbook on Labrador health issues, this time on EIC, and I’d like to thank him for doing so. Genetic testing should, of course, mean that one is less likely to encounter this, and other similar autosomal recessive conditions. You will find all our regular features are present in the book, and I would like to thank all those who have helped with their production, Sharon Lambert for her list of CC winners, Gary Johnson for the list of 2018 champions, Gail Flockton for formatting the judges’ critiques, and our photographers whose pictures greatly enhance this publication: Rachel Pattison, Sharon Rogers, Judi Neachell and Sarah Middleton. I would also like to thank our talented designer, Colin Swaffer and last but certainly not least, everyone who has kindly submitted kennel adverts to make this book attractive and colourful. I hope you will all enjoy reading it, and I wish everyone a happy 2019.

Well here we are again...another year and another yearbook. This one is the Club’s 71st and, as I said in my editorial last year, I do hope it won’t be the last one. However, feel regrettably that it may well be, at least in its present format. As I said last year, the prevailing presence of online media platforms such as Facebook, has resulted in a diminishing number of kennel review submissions, which has more than halved in the past 10 years, and with increasing production and distribution costs, the Club simply cannot afford to sustain this annual expenditure of several thousand pounds. Committee will be considering the future of the Yearbook in due course, and members notified of any decision in the Club’s newsletter. In the meantime, it gives me pleasure to present the 2019 book. 2018 was a very busy year for the Club, with an additional championship show, as it was MCLRC’s turn to host the Joint Labrador Club’s Show, which was a particularly enjoyable and festive event, falling as it did just before Christmas. You will find results, critiques and photos of this and of all our shows in the Yearbook. The field trial section has also had a full and successful year, having run extra, new events during the past season, and although we have no reports of any of the events this time, the results and photos appear within. In July many members would have been shocked and saddened to hear of the passing at a tragically early age, of James Hindley, and a tribute, courtesy of Ann Britton, appears in the book. The Club sends condolences to James’ family and friends. Our Puppy Garden Party, judged on this last occasion by Hayley Brambles, was as usual a great success; Hayley’s report along with some wonderful photos that capture the fun of the day, kindly supplied by Sarah Middleton, can be found in the book. The Club is very fortunate

OBITUARY JAMES HINDLEY (1972 – 2018) Cornlands Labradors Like so very many in the Breed, I was saddened to hear of the passing of James Hindley at far too young an age of just 46 years. He awarded CCs in Labradors and judged internationally. Marion Hopkinson on behalf of Midland Counties Labrador Club wrote on Facebook, “to say we are all shocked to hear of the untimely death of James Hindley will be an understatement. James has been a member of our club for over 20 years and was very much still involved with his Labradors. The club members who have known James will be with us in sending our sincere condolences to his family”. Similar tributes came from other Breed Clubs too. Personally, I have known James since he was a young man, initially when he had just finished college and I was attending shows in the Midlands. He was always smiling, polite, well dressed, and charmingly well mannered. Whilst James was qualified and initially worked full time in horticulture, about which topic he still had matchless knowledge, Labrador show kennels later benefitted from his care. Eventually he settled at the historic Cornlands Kennel of Peggy Rae in East Anglia. James drove Peggy to the shows. He was a great help with the dogs and being a good handler, he campaigned the later Cornlands champions to their titles. I well remember awarding, (later Sh Ch), Cornlands Lady Dahlia her first CC and Best of Breed out of an entry of 310 dogs and bitches (and one judge, me, on the day) at City of Birmingham in 2004. As I handed him the Green and White and the Red and White cards, James face was a picture, for once he was stunned into absolute spluttering silence! Having a brilliant memory, he was a walking horticultural encyclopaedia. With regards to dogs, he could recite any Labrador pedigree one liked to mention, going right back in time. His knowledge of the history of the Labrador and Cavaliers and the well known breeders who had gone before, was unlimited. He had a sparklingly sharp, but kindly wit and was at his best perfectly impersonating well known characters within our dog showing fraternity. Impersonation was his party piece, one such performance I recall being at Dot Gardners (Novacroft) special birthday party

held at Marion Hopkinson’s home. We were all crying with laughter and in stitches. James could well have rivalled Rory Bremner or Billy Connolly for his stage presence and wit, he was so funny. On Peggy’s demise at a grand old age, Cornlands was passed into James hands. He lived there for the past few years, with his friend, Angus. Outwardly, fellow Labrador enthusiasts at home and abroad, will remember James as a bright, bubbly, clever and sociable person who appeared to thoroughly enjoy life. Sadly however, there can sometimes be another complex side to such an extrovert public persona and thus it appeared with James. As time went by, following Peggy’s death, his closest friends in Labradors were aware that there was much in life which troubled him. One wishes the clock could be turned back to happier times when he enjoyed the pure fun and laughter of life and friends. That is how we should chose to remember him. I have four yellow rambler roses now covering a high stone wall and flowering profusely every May in my garden. They were a kind and thoughtfully chosen gift from James after the death of my husband, George. James knew that their profuse, bright yellow button flowers in early spring each year, would bring back fond memories, and now James name is added to those memories. Such a short life. James, the turmoil is over. Rest in peace. You will never be forgotten. Our sincere condolences go to James’ family and friends. Ann Britton 8

HAPPY

RETIREMENT Frank and Margaret

In September 2017 long standing committee members, Frank and Margaret Gawthorpe retired. Frank had been MCLRC’s Membership secretary for many years. A presentation took place at the AGM in April this year, where they were each appointed as life members of the Club in recognition for their services. This was followed by an excellent lunch at the Hardwick Inn. We would like to thank Frank and Margaret for all their hard work for the Club over the years and we wish them all the best in their retirement. 15

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB ADVICE FOR THE PUPPY BUYER THE TEMPERAMENT IS MOST IMPORTANT. YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO SEE THE DAM ALONG WITH HER PUPPIES From the Breeder of your puppy, you should receive the following: 1. A signed Pedigree Form 2. A signed Kennel Club Registration Certificate 3. An understanding and agreement to any Kennel club endorsements 4. A Diet Sheet 5. An advice sheet on your puppy’s vaccination programme. (until the vaccination programme is completed, your puppy must not mix with other dogs) 6. Advice on training of your puppy 7. A Worming Form (showing the dates your puppy was wormed whilst with the Breeder) 8. A copy of both Sire & Dam’s Hip Score Certificate & Eye Test Certificate PLEASE BE AWARE, THE CERTIFICATES WILL ONLY SHOW THE STATUS OF THE SIRE AND DAM, AND CANNOT BE TAKEN AS A GUARANTEE OF THE STATUS OF THE PUPPY You are strongly advised to have made an appointment with your vet, as soon as possible after the purchase of your puppy, for a health check. At the same time, you can discuss with him/her, the worming and vaccination programmes. Your puppy should already be identified by microchip. You are strongly advised to take out insurance for your puppy (usually the breeder will offer a temporary insurance package with your puppy). The buyer of a Labrador Retriever puppy or adult, should be aware of the possible diseases, both genetic and otherwise, to which the breed is prone. KC/BVA HIP SCORE CERTIFICATE Hip dysplasia is a term which encompasses a number of specific developmental and other abnormalities involving the hip joint. The lower the score, the less the degree of Hip Dysplasia. The score range is 0 - 106. The breed’s mean score is 15. You are advised to check the date of the examination on the relevant certificate. KC/BVA HIP ELBOW DYSPLASIA SCHEME The lower the overall grade (graded on a scale of 0 - 3), the less the degree of elbow dysplasia (not all breeders participate in this scheme).

“Ask not what your charity can do for you but what you can do for your charity”. I may have borrowed from Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address and whilst normally I would agree with his sentiments, on this occasion I would like to turn it round and say “Ask not what you can do for your Labrador charity, but what your Labrador charity can do for you”. Well, perhaps not you, but maybe someone you know. LRSE&C has been helping find homes for Labradors in need for over 25 years and before that for many more years before officially registering as a charity. Our core business is locating a good home, what we like to think of as a “forever” home for those dogs who through no fault of their own and occasionally through their own fault, find themselves without a home. We have helped couples going through divorce, prisoners going to spend time at her Majesty’s convenience, those who find they must travel to live abroad at short notice, those evicted, and those who have taken on more than they can cope with. We have homed show dogs who don’t like to show, working dogs who don’t like to work, gundogs who are afraid of guns, game-keepers’ dogs who are afraid of pheasants. We have placed dogs with the prison service, search and rescue and the armed forces which have struggled to find a suitable family home and very occasionally we have faced difficult decisions with dogs that come to us as a last resort, facing euthanasia for aggression often as a result of poor management rather than inherent temperament issues. We help next of kin find homes for cherished family pets when their owners die suddenly or without a plan for their canine companions. We are a people charity, helping people as much as we help Labradors. Increasingly we are finding the dogs that we are asked to help have complex medical problems and with your financial help we support over 80 dogs with a complete dictionary of veterinary complaints; Dottie with mega-oesophagus,

Ozzy came to the charity with an artificial hip joint which we thought would be good for life but unfortunately the cement failed and the joint became loose and had to be removed. Ozzy is recovering well and coping without a hip and without pain, his full story is on our website.

Dottie came close to euthanasia as a pup with megaoesophagus before she arrived at the charity and close to dying of pneumonia but with much love from her foster mum, Pat Ponsford and a variety of drugs and a special feeding chair, she lives life to the full and is even prepared to share her bed with Elsa the new pup in the Ponsford household”.

Ben, Ollie, Cosmo and Inca are epileptics. We want to do more but we find our efforts are sometimes thwarted by those in need of our services not knowing about us and the dreaded internet providing an alternative. We feel and I know that we can provide a service to ensure excellent homes and outstanding aftercare for the dogs that come to the charity so if you know someone who needs help then please tell them about us, an advert on Preloved or Facebook may provide a quick solution but will their dog find a forever home backed by a charity that will ensure its care for the rest of its life? When you are with your friends, family and Labradors outside on wonderful walks in the beautiful countryside can I challenge you to think about rubbish? Rubbish is a blight, but if you start collecting a few bits whilst you are out with your dogs then maybe someone will stop and ask you “What are you doing?” and you can

say you are part of a global campaign ‘Labradors Against Litter’. “Global campaign?” they will ask “I hadn’t heard about it” Well now you have, you can say, you heard about it here. Dog walkers sometimes are stigmatised for not clearing up after their dogs but we can start a revolution of good will. Be careful, of course, wear gloves or invest in a picker-upper, recycle if possible and make sure to send me a photograph, every campaign needs a start and today ‘Labradors Against Litter’ starts with you and who knows, with the help of social media, we could make a difference. Do please keep in touch through our website www.loveyourlabrador.co.uk on our Facebook page and on Twitter #Labrador Rescue SE&C and Instagram #labbrescueseandc Richard Best Chairman

KENNEL CLUB BREED STANDARD FOR THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch section of the Kennel Club website here www.the-kennel-club.org.uk for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure. However if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as undesirable or highly undesirable it is strongly recommended that it should not be rewarded in the show ring. carrying excessive weight. Level topline. Loins wide, short-coupled and strong. HINDQUARTERS: Well developed, not sloping to tail; well-turned stifle. Hocks well let down, cowhocks highly undesirable. FEET: Round, compact; well arched toes and well developed pads. TAIL: Distinctive feature, very thick towards base, gradually tapering towards tip, medium length, free from feathering, but clothed thickly all round with short, thick, dense coat, thus giving ‘rounded’ appearance described as ‘otter’ tail. May be carried gaily but should not curl over back. GAIT/ MOVEMENT: Free, covering adequate ground; straight and true in front and rear. COAT: Distinctive feature, short dense without wave or feathering, giving fairly hard feel to the touch; weather resistant undercoat. COLOUR: The only correct colours are wholly black, yellow or liver/ chocolate. Yellows range from light cream to red fox. Small white spot on chest and the rear of front pasterns permissible. SIZE: Ideal height at withers: dogs: 56-57 cms. (22-22½ ins.); bitches: 55-56 cms. (21½-22 ins.). FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog. NOTE: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

GENERAL APPEARANCE: Strongly built, shortcoupled, very active; broad in skull; broad and deep through chest and ribs; broad and strong over loins and hindquarters. CHARACTERISTICS: Good-tempered, very agile (which precludes excessive body weight or excessive substance). Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water. Adaptable, devoted companion. TEMPERAMENT: Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness. HEAD AND SKULL: Skull broad with defined stop; clean-cut without fleshy cheeks. Jaws of medium length, powerful not snipey. Nose wide, nostrils well developed. EYES: Medium size, expressing intelligence and good temper; brown or hazel. EARS: Not large or heavy, hanging close to head and set rather far back. MOUTH: Jaws and teeth strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. NECK: Clean, strong, powerful, set into well placed shoulders. FOREQUARTERS: Shoulders long and well laid back, with upper arm of near equal length, placing legs well under body. Forelegs well boned and straight from elbow to ground when viewed from either front or side. BODY: Chest of good width and depth, with well sprung barrel ribs - this effect not to be produced by

PORTRAIT OF OUR JUDGE 2019 Championship Show Judge (Dogs) Mr Chris Mills (Lembas)

My father purchased a yellow Labrador bitch from a local rescue centre, and my involvement with Labrador Retrievers started many years ago when she became my constant companion. This happened 60 years ago and there has been very little time since that I have not owned at least one Labrador. Having a father who was interested in shooting meant that my early years with Labradors took me in the working direction, and for thirty odd years I enjoyed both the training and working of my dogs. Our interest in show Labradors began in 1989 when Claire bought me a black Labrador dog puppy as a birthday present, he was well bred with both Follytower and Charway lines in his pedigree. We ventured into a few small shows with him, but he was really my shooting companion, which he enjoyed much more than the show ring. After the birth of our third child, Victoria, who needed constant care, we decided that we needed something to relieve our stress, so we chose to go into dog showing … not quite as stress free as we had hoped! Claire contacted Mrs Gwen Broadly of Sandylands, who directed us to Mrs Fiona Braddon, where we purchased our first foundation bitch Trendlewood Midnight Silk at Lembas, a daughter of Sandylands My Guy, one of our favourite dogs. Our next purchase was also very Sandylands based, Jugaren Moonlight Melody at Lembas, a yellow bitch bred by Juley and Gary Allen, whose breeding was strongly linked to Mr Tony Pascoe’s Trewinnard lines, with strong links to the older Sandylands dogs. Claire and I are pleased to have been able to keep our strong Sandylands links going up until the present day. The Lembas affix was granted in the mid ‘90s and since its inception we have been fortunate to have bred some lovely dogs all from our original foundation. The first to get us noticed was Lembas To The Moon And Back, a super dog, who won our first RCC at 9 months of age. He was also a very prepotent stud dog and he is often seen in show pedigrees today. We have

to date bred nine UK SH Champions; SH. CH. Lembas Moonlight Serenade, SH. CH. Lembas Lets Get Serious, SH. CH. My Jack Sprat at Lembas, SH. CH. Lembas Mamma Mia, SH. CH. Lembas Super Trouper, SH. CH. Lembas Chiquitita, SH. CH. Lembas Pretty Amazing Grace and SH. CH. Lembas Go Gentle (our first black one) and for Mr Ed Casey, SH. CH. Lembas Kiss Me Kate at Moyglass. I have been fortunate to have been invited to judge all over the world and have enjoyed every minute of it, but to be invited to judge at what must now be UKs most prestigious club show, is indeed an honour. I would therefore like to thank the committee for inviting me and wish all exhibitors the very best of good fortune. Thank you in anticipation. Chris Mills (half of Lembas Labradors) 28

PORTRAIT OF OUR JUDGE

2019 Championship Show Judge (Bitches) Mr Jan Roger Sauge (Mambrinos)

Mambrinos Black Cap

I had my first labrador 38 years ago. He was not a showdog, but I showed him a lot. One day he was placed as number five in the class, and I was hooked! Some years later I bought a bitch from a showkennel, and started my breeding. Over the years I have bred nearly 70 show champions, mostly black and yellow, but also some chocolates. The highlight was in 2008, when Penny Carpanini showed Sh. Ch. Mambrinos Spellbound At Carpenny to best bitch at Crufts! I was in seventh heaven! I have been judging around the world, including several times to the US. In 2008 I

judged the big Potomac Show, and loved every minute of it. To judge in the UK is something special, and I am very much looking forward to judging bitches at Midland Counties Labrador Retriever Club Championship Show 2019. Jan Roger Sauge 29

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW SUNDAY 8TH APRIL 2018 DOGS – Judge: Mrs Margaret Brown Dog CC: MACLEAN’S AFINMORE AZUFRAL Dog RCC: BRADDONS’ TRENDLEWOOD BORN TO RUN JW Best Puppy Dog: CARPANINI’S CARPENNY ROSS It was a great honour for me to be asked to judge Midland Counties Labrador Club show. Thank you to the Committee of the club for their kind invitation and thank you to everyone who gave me the opportunity to judge their lovely dogs. It was a real pleasure for me and I hope win or lose you enjoyed the day as much as I did. In some of the classes I found it a difficult task to decide between the first two dogs, it was simply down to my particular preference on the day. I don’t believe I could ever be called a head purist. I prefer to look at the whole dog. However, I do like to see a kind balanced head that is as near to the standard as possible. Sadly, I have to report that a few heads today were extremely untypical and unfortunately they were to be found on dogs that were otherwise very pleasing in construction. I would hope that our breed judges can differentiate between what is acceptable and what is not. It is my opinion today that some dogs stood out from the rest. I also believe that a really good dog will always have a few shows when he looks fabulous. However, those of us who have been exhibiting for a number of years know that this is only part of what makes a winner. It is all a matter of everything coming together on the day. The overall condition of the dog being so very important, although the bond between handler and dog can sometimes mean the difference between taking home a red card or a blue card. It is after all “a show”. When it all comes together it’s wonderful. Good luck to everyone in the future. VETERAN DOG 7+ YEARS (9:4) 1. Hodges’ Ch Naiken Zephyr JW. What a beautiful dog this. I wouldn’t change a thing about him, wonderful type, construction and for me most importantly is superbly balanced, was shown in beautiful condition, a combination of strength & masculinity, he really scores in head with such a kind expression, good length and depth of muzzle, excellent topline which he held well on the move, double coat of the correct texture and lovely otter tail, looked so well in profile. He just could not be denied the class. 2. Ayres’ Sh Ch Musabi Imperial Topaz. Impressive dog who is balanced in outline with an alert masculine head and expression, strong clean neck, is short coupled with good depth of brisket and correct shoulder angulation, strong quarters with good width in second thigh, carrying an excellent coat and moved so soundly, a worthy champion 3. Callaghans’ Ir Sh Ch Claychalk Costa Zaire Of Bannabeach An Ch. 36

SPECIAL WORKING DOG (2:0) 1. Lambert’s Ch Mattand Exodus JW. Such a pleasure to judge this dog, I have admired him for some time, this dog has an excellent front assembly with good depth of brisket and well laid shoulders, strong neck of correct length, slight arch giving a continual line from neck into strong firm topline, kind masculine head with intelligent expression, good length of rib which allowed him to move unrestricted, well developed quarters with moderate angulation behind, nothing is exaggerated and he has such lovely balance from nose to tail, superb coat and well clothed tail. 2. Finney’s Play On Words. Lovely black with an extremely outgoing personality which I loved, kind masculine head with good length of muzzle, strong firm topline, he good depth of brisket and excellent barrel rib, firm topline, could perhaps have better feet but still has a great deal of positives. So well presented. MINOR PUPPY DOG (18:5) Some lovely puppies in this class and they may well change places as they develop. 1. Carpanini’s Carpenny Ross. I really liked this puppy, beautiful type, so well balanced and with good bone and substance for his size and age, excels in neck and shoulders and has depth of brisket even at this young age, really liked his overall balance and construction, masculine head with a kind intelligent expression, a shade shorter in loin than the second and this gave him the advantage in topline on the move, calm sensible approach in the ring. 2. Hopkinson’s Rocheby Montgomery. This youngster has everything in the right place, liked his strength in body and lovely kind head & expression just right for his age, very alert and at one with his handler, excellent bone and substance, strong and firm over the quarters with just the right degree of angulation to give him balance, excellent coat and tail, very well presented. 3. Young’s Potterspiney Hidalgo. PUPPY DOG (16:4) 1. King’s Linthwaite Excalibur. Lovely young dog with a very balanced outline, good angulation in front with clean neck and depth of fore-chest, good turn of stifle and width in second thigh, not over angulated but enough to give the dog balance in profile, thought he was a lovely dog to go over, with such a great deal to like about him, the right degree of maturity for age and a sound positive mover. 2. Rawlinson & Balshaws’ Halshimoor Pitch Battle At Shanorrell. On first glance I thought this dog was my winner, excellent double coat and well clothed tail on this youngster, firm level topline, good strong bone which continued right through his pasterns, overall conformation was excellent, very eye catching outline and shown in excellent condition, on his toes all the time for his handler 3. Leigh’s Steeleigh Miracles Happen. SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG (6 – 15 MONTHS) (10:1) 1. Hopkinson’s Rocheby Centenalee Sir Oliver. Super yellow who excels in overall balance, lovely kind expression, good length and depth of muzzle, correct shoulders with ample length of neck, really appealed to me for type, won here on his construction and soundness, correct bone and substance for his size and frame, first class coat, moved extremely well very positive with a free unrestricted stride. Reminds me very much of our own Rum Punch. 2. Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin At Lynquest. Lovely masculine head on this dog, he has a kind expression and has good balance between skull and foreface, lovely clean neck with well-set shoulders, coat of correct length and texture, good bone, moved well with a free stride. 3. Leigh’s Steeleigh Miracles Happen. JUNIOR DOG (8:0) This was a lovely class, my first two were very different in “type” preferred the neck and shoulders of the winner. 37

1. Logan’s Madgack Mulberry. Have never seen this one before but so very pleasing to go over, nothing is exaggerated in this black, excellent coat and outline on this youngster, short coupled without being short in rib, excellent shoulders with a clean strong neck, firm topline, not over angulated behind but has enough to give him balance when stood and on the move, I loved him and I hope he goes on to win well, he is a dog that isn’t all flash but for the judges who want breed type he fits the criteria so well, when he matures he should trouble the best, moved out well covering the ring with ease. 2. Candel’s Wahnahnish Silver Secret. Beautiful dog with so much to like about him, loved his head and expression, full of quality, felt the winner had more neck but such a showman, excellent coat and tail, very appealing with good overall construction, shown in great condition and handled to advantage, short coupled with strong well angulated rear, excellent topline and tail, stands and shows four square, a youngster that is difficult to overlook, sound mover. 3. Litherland’s Oakhouse Oscar Pistorius. YEARLING DOG (8:3) 1. Bailliss’ Tissalian Hi Jack JW. Such a lovely dog and well deserves his title, beautiful head so very balanced with a kind intelligent expression, a firm strong topline and eye-catching clean outline, strong neck, good bone and pasterns, has good turn of stifle and width in quarters without being overdone in this department, have been a great admirer of this dog from the ringside, lots to like about him, not in his best coat today but had enough to easily carry him through to the challenge, handled to great advantage. 2. Broadburn, Lawson & Sartis’ Shaymiloney Solesequoia Tipibear. Second dog from this sire I have put up today, this lovely black is maturing along nicely for his age (21 months) lovely masculine head with good balance between skull and foreface, excels in front angulation, lovely fore chest, bone and substance, excellent coat of the correct length and texture, showing good dense undercoat, won his place well in this class of young dogs. 3. Young’s Potterspiney Allanon. SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (12:0) 1. Rowley’s Treantagh Rainbow Warrior JW. Another from this well know sire, this young dog has so much to like about him, gave his handler a hard time and a youngster and gets easily distracted, however I had no hesitation in giving him this class regardless of his naughtiness, has a lovely head with intelligent expression, when I did get him to look at me, good length of muzzle, perhaps not the perfect front but excellent firm topline, well turned stifles and strong quarters, in excellent coat, moved soundly, very interesting young prospect. 2. Broadburn, Lawson & Sartis’ Shaymiloney Solesequoia Tipibear. 3. King’s Linthwaite Excalibur. NOVICE DOG (8:0) 1. Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin At Lynquest. 2. Leigh’s Steeleigh Miracles Happens. Lovely made black, 3rd in a strong puppy class, excellent coat and tail, masculine head with well-developed nostrils, liked the way he looked at me very kind with expressive eyes, lots to like about him and mature along steadily, moved well covering the ring with a free stride. 3. Hughes’ Adoraden Aftershock. UNDERGRADUATE DOG (4:1) 1. Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin At Lynquest. 2. Auteys’ Chadfrith Alcazaba. Chocolate youngster with a balanced outline, good eye colour, alert masculine head and kind expression, well set ears, strong firm topline, is short coupled and has sufficient length of rib with good depth of brisket 3. O’Dell & Bills’ Vetybonbetty Chocolate Box. 38

GRADUATE DOG (9) 1. Braddons’ Trendlewood Born To Run JW. Very striking yellow of 19 months, thought he might well be my winner on my first look around the ring only thing he had to do was move and this he did without exaggeration and with a free and effortless stride, had the correct degree of development for his age, I liked everything about him from his kind balanced head, expressive eyes that show intelligence, clean strong neck into long sloping shoulders, not too short in body and correctly coupled with good turn of stifle, sufficiently angulated in quarters to give him overall balance in outline, in excellent coat of good texture, showing correct undercoat, He was handled to great advantage. I could have taken this one home with me He would have definitely been an asset in my kennel Delighted to award him RCC in strong competition. 2. Gaskell’s Sharouns Ventriloquest For Tempaskell JW. This yellow really scores over the neck and top line, has good depth of brisket is short coupled, has a lively outgoing temperament, handled so very well and moved out with a purposeful stride, lots to like about this striking dog. 3. Carpanini’s Carpenny Pitch. POST GRADUATE DOG (17:4) 1. Maclean’s Afinmore Azufral. I really liked this dog, has the four most important things one looks for in a Labrador, coat, head, tail and temperament, so very well-constructed with an exceptionally good outline, strong over the neck, well placed shoulders, has excellent bone and substance without being course or overdone, good length of leg which gives him an advantage on the move, his head is balanced and masculine and he has kind expressive eyes, an excellent strong topline, wonderful coat and tail which is well clothed all round, his quarters are strong and well-muscled, movement was superb, sound and positive with good forward reach, stands four square and was shown in beautiful condition, this dog has quality in abundance, I do not know why he has not a number of CC’s to his name as he has so many of the qualities most claim to want in a Labrador. CC. 2. McCrorys’ Millroseglen Make My Day With Meadovillabs. Striking young dog in outline, so unexaggerated and is typical of his breeding lovely dog to judge, full of quality and type, eye catching in outline with correct angulation in front, equally well angulated behind without being over exaggerated here, masculine head of balanced proportioned, such a kind expression, correct length and depth of muzzle, excellent topline and tail set. Perhaps a shade short in rib but he has so many other qualities. 3. McLellans’ Aquarius Herbu Zadora For Saranden (IMP POL). MID LIMIT DOG (14:1) 1. Maclean’s Afinmore Alain JW ShCM. This dog is another who has quality in abundance, what a lovely head on this young dog, stood out for me in this class, he has size and overall conformation, such good balance between skull and muzzle and with a kind alert expression to complete the picture, good depth of brisket, well placed shoulders, ample neck with good length in upper arm, is short coupled with good length of rib, superb coat, has correct width behind without being over angulated, well let down hocks, movement fluent and effortless, carrying a good short coat of the correct texture, Another who should be taking top awards. 2. Young’s Warringha’s Merrigun With Langdale. Have admired this dog from the ringside, I like is size and balanced outline, he has a good length of leg, excellent front assembly with a good length or rib, this combination allows him to move unrestricted with good front reach, well let down hocks, carrying the correct amount of weight for his frame, so very unlucky to meet the winner who was in such wonderful condition. 3. Williamson’s Sharouns Talk Of The Town JW. 39

LIMIT DOG (17:6) 1. Crellin’s Aalincarrey Summer Majic. Lovely dog in outline, construction and type, kind and masculine head with soft appealing expression, has excellent bone and substance, good length of rib and depth of brisket, strong firm quarters and width in second thigh. In excellent coat of the correct length and texture. A quiet unassuming dog and he is possibly one that could be overlooked for this reason, showed steadily for his handler, moved around the ring with good reach, sound and positive. I felt he was the most balanced in this class. 2. Elliott’s Winsleywood Wild Joker Of Lyndham. Strong impressive dog, masculine without being course, well set ears, with good depth & width in chest, a short dense coat of correct texture, good bone and substance for his frame, held his topline well on the move, shown in excellent condition and coat, I felt that the winner was much more positive on the move, however a lovely dog who was handled extremely well without fuss. 3. Heppers’ Mardas All Blacks JW. OPEN DOG (8:0) 1. Hopkinson’s Sh Ch Rocheby Hornblower. Such a lovely dog to judge, full of quality and type, typical of his breeding, so well balanced in outline, has excellent topline with a strong neck and correct layback of shoulders, good length of rib and depth of brisket, strong firm quarters, well let down hocks, well angulated behind without being over exaggerated here, masculine head of balanced proportioned, excellent coat with a well clothed tail of the correct shape, covered the ring with a steady positive stride. 2. Candel’s Ch Wahnahnish Simply Sensational. Such an eye catching dog, upstanding, handsome and of lovely type, clean neck and firm topline, lovely head so well balanced with a kind masculine expression, carrying ideal weight for his frame, preferred the front angulation of the winner but this dog has so much style in the ring that he is very difficult to overlook, he is short coupled with the correct barrelled rib, in excellent coat and condition, handled extremely well. Deserved his placement in this quality class 3. Marskells’ Berolee Didier Drogba. MARGARET BROWN

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW SUNDAY 8TH APRIL 2018 BITCHES – Judge: Mr G. Johnson Bitch CC & BIS: HOPKINSONS’ SH.CH. KILBURNPARK MISS MAUREEN AT ROCHEBY Bitch RCC: WOODLEY’S A SENSE OF PLEASURE’S YLVIE AT ALKHAMHURST (IMP DEU) Best Puppy Bitch & BPIS: HODGES’ NAIKEN DANCE RHYTHM Such a fantastic entry both numerically and in quality. Without a doubt, this was the best bitch entry I have judged in the UK, the depth of quality we have in bitches is a joy to see and I could have happily awarded quite a number of CCs today. The ‘negative’ side to this is that so many bitches I liked went home without a card which I think they had deserved. VETERAN (10:4) 1. Woodburns’ Sh.Ch. Centenalee Sparkling Snow. 8 years old yellow I gave this bitch her first CC as a youngster and really appreciate her type. Beautiful head shape, with a kind eye, showing a pleasing expression. Strongly set neck, well ribbed body and well turned stifles. Stands on good bone and neat feet, carries a dense jacket and a well clothed tail, carrying a tad too much condition today for me. 2. Shirtons’ Woolman Proper Starlight. Very nice yellow, with a super head piece. In very good nick and carries the correct weight and body condition. Well barrelled ribs having plenty of heart room, balanced through the body maintaining a level topline on the move. Quarters well muscled, moved soundly and with ease. 3. Dodd’s Sh.Ch. Brockburrow Breaking Dawn. SPECIAL WORKING (4:0) 1. Scutcher’s Winsleywood Wild Honey JW ShCM. Yellow built on very clean lines, lovely in outline and of good breed type. Well-shaped feminine head with a kind eye and a decent length of muzzle. Excels in neck and shoulder, leading into a level topline, well ribbed body and well turned stifles. Stands on good bone and neat feet. Showed and moved really well. 2. Coode’s Warringah’s Gulwarra JW.Well-developed chocolate, not quite the hindquarters of the winner. Such a kind soft expression, Scores heavily in coat and otter tail, and has the most wonderful bone and feet. In very good nick and carries the correct weight and body condition. Balanced through the body with the correct length of leg to body ratio. 3. King’s Linthwaite Cleopatra.

41

MINOR PUPPY (24:6) 1. Hodge’s Naiken Dance Rhythm. What a smashing black puppy this is, definitely one that will go places I’m sure. 8 months old and already very well grown. Very sweet head and expression, correct eye shape and colour and has a good length of muzzle, Good through the neck and well laid back shoulders, excellent topline and well set tail. Stands on strong bone and neat feet, moved with purpose and drive. Very self- assured and showed herself to advantage. In lovely coat and condition, best bitch puppy and in agreement with my co-judge BPIS. 2. Jones’ Hafnau Georgette. Another lovely puppy, very similar in most respects to the winner, a little younger at 6.5 months old and everything just right for age. Pretty head, good forehand and very good topline. Quarters well developed and ribs already well sprung. Showed and moved very well. Another to watch. 3. Balshaw & Rawlinson’s – Shanorrell Summer Season At Halshimoor. PUPPY (25:3) 1. Rawlinson & Balshaws’ Halshimoor Perfect Timing With Shanorrell. A very showy compact yellow in super coat and condition. Lovely kind head and expression, Good reach of neck and lay of shoulder, has plenty of rib and is short and strong over the loins. Well made quarters, well off for bone, moved out well. Another puppy I liked a lot. 2. Charlton’s Classical Act At Foxrush. Quality pale yellow of lovely type, built on clean lines and perhaps more my type, but lost out on coat condition to the winner today. Super head piece, so feminine. Correctly placed shoulders which flow into an excellent topline and well set tail. Good width to quarter, neat hocks and feet. Moved well. 3. Flockton’s Dylsonleigh Miss Muffett. SPECIAL JUNIOR (6:0) 1. Key’s Keydella Kafe Noir. Well built black, up to size and balanced. Especially appreciated her length of leg and the fact that she did not carry any excess weight. Very kind feminine head, good reach of neck flows into a level topline and a well set on tail. Scopey body, plenty of heart room, Very well muscled quarters and second thigh. Not quite in her best jacket today, moved well. 2. Minchella’s Abbeystead Hope. Quite similar in type to the winner. Scored in neck and layback of shoulder. Good depth of brisket and has length of leg. Stands on sound bone and good feet. Quarters well developed quarter and held her topline on the move. 3. Hobby’s Icarus Jean Genie. JUNIOR (20:2) 1. Woodburns’ Centenalee Silver Ice. Eye-catching very pale yellow of a super overall type. Such a kind feminine head, with eyes of good shape and colour. Strongly set neck which flows into a level topline and a well set on tail. Shoulders well laid, and has well sprung ribs, short and strong across the loins, well muscled quarters used well. Excellent bone and feet, with short hocks. In very good coat. 2. Stoker’s Madgack Mimosa. Soundly moving black of good breed type, appreciated her well shaped head and expression. Splendid reach of neck that flows into good layback of shoulder, Well barrelled ribs, short coupled and deep through the brisket. Carries a very good weather resistant coat and otter tail. 3. Lambert’s Mattand Front Page (AI). YEARLING (28:6) This was a truly wonderful class, with many lovely bitches going unplaced. 1. Reynold’s Carromer Shimmering Satin JW. Really impressive yellow, pulled out all the stops to win this fabulous class. In full coat and in wonderful condition. Excels in neck, shoulder and length 42

of upper arm. Most lovely through the head, balanced and feminine, great spring to rib, stifles well turned. Moved so soundly with an easy stride on strong bone and well let down hocks. 2. Powell’s Seatallan Yellow Archangel (AI). Another quality yellow, a different type to the winner but she is just as well put together, perhaps just a tad shorter in the body. Very well balanced all through, well ribbed back, super topline and a tail that is correctly set. Good length of leg to body ratio, Quality bone and neat feet, moved and showed very well. Not carrying such a dense jacket as the winner. 3. O’Brien’s Maxfield Arabella. SPECIAL BEGINNERS (11:3) 1. Flockton’s Dylsonleigh Miss Muffett. Third in the good puppy class, this yellow is of a lovely type with a typical outline. Really good topline and tailset. Pretty through the head with a feminine expression, good eye shape and colour. Brisket of good depth and well developed quarters. In decent coat and moved well. 2. Chapman’s Rocheby Gingersnap For Daisypatch. Yellow of nice type, in a slightly larger frame than the first placed. Liked her length of leg to body ratio. Super neck and shoulder with a good layback of shoulder. Ribs well sprung and short and strong across the couplings. Adequate width of quarter, moved and showed well. 3. Crellin’s Aalincarrey Black Pearl. NOVICE (18:2) 1. Shirton’s Woolman Proper Enchanting. Neat black with a lovely head and expression, good length of muzzle. Clean outline and a level topline kept whilst on the move, Medium reach of neck leading to a well laid shoulder, would prefer a slightly longer upper arm. Good quarters and a well set tail. Moved soundly. 2. Charlton’s Foxrush Whoops A Daisy. Just 6 months old and still learning her job. Most feminine head with a kind eye, excellent quarters and stands on sound bone and hocks short. Good lay of shoulder, short coupled with a good depth of chest in decent coat and moved well. 3. Jones’ Aalincarrey Pumpkin At Ladrow. UNDERGRADUATE (12:1) 4. Charlton’s Classical Act At Foxrush. 5. Stoker’s Madgack Mimosa. 6. Lewis’ Ramsayville Rosy Outlook At Crammondkirk. GRADUATE (12:1) 1. Woodley’s A Sense Of Pleasure’s Ylvie At Alkhamhurst (Imp Deu). A classic black exuding breed type. A steady sensible type, there is not much you would want to change about this bitch that maturity will not finish. Stunning outline, so clean and balanced and carrying the correct weight. Her head is a just beautiful, she has a correct Labrador melting expression and correct length of muzzle. Splendid reach of neck, and a correct forehand that is seldom seen. Well made through the body all wrapped in a double weather resistant coat and well set otter tail. Moved very well, covering the ground with ease. My notes simply say ‘stunning bitch’ –. It was my pleasure to award her the Res CC today. She is deserving of her title and I hope her third ticket is not too far off. 2. Lewis’ Crammondkirk Back To Black. Another beautiful black, liked her a lot too, presents a very pleasing outline. Superb neck and shoulder with good return of upper arm. Strong across the back, short coupled, super topline. Well sprung ribs and short couplings, she was in excellent coat. This handler knew how to get the best out of this exhibit, standing well off her on a loose lead. Moved and showed well. 3. Scutcher’s Winsleywood Wild Anise JW. 43

POST GRADUATE (27:-) Another super class, I was spoilt for choice. 1. Mitchell’s Afinmore Ardmore. This class was headed by this very good substantial chocolate, well grown and of super type. Workmanlike and strong but still retains her femininity. Super outline with a strongly set neck and a well placed shoulder. Liked her headpiece, well balanced with a good eye shape and colour. Well made body with a strong topline and well developed quarters. In very good coat with an otter tail, moved freely. 2. Hepper’s Mardas Black Silk JW. This very good black was shown in excellent coat and condition, a very good type of bitch. Loved her head and eye with a kind expression. Balshaw & Rawlinson’s Shanorrell Soiree At Halshimoor. Well presented extrovert yellow shown in great bloom and handled to get the best out of her. Has bags of breed type. Built on clean lines, and carrying the correct amount of weight. Liked her depth of chest, good neck and shoulder, level topline kept on the move. McLellan’s Timouron Sioux For Saranden. LIMIT (21:2) 1. Stoker’s Shaymiloney Serena At Madgack. A new one to me, but what a stunning bitch! Beautifully balanced black, substantial but still retaining femininity. Possesses the correct double coat and super tail and carrying the correct weight. Long sloping shoulders, firm topline kept on the move, good depth of brisket plenty of heart room. Stands on very sound bone and correct feet. Moved very well - another I considered highly in the challenge. She deserves to be campaigned, as in my opinion, she is worthy of her title. 2. Campbell’s Binnaig Atomic Blonde JW. Really excellent yellow, different in type to the winner. Showed her socks off, and was well presented. Beautiful head and expression, feminine throughout. Loved her superb clean outline, good ribbing and correct depth of chest to leg length ratio. Super shoulders, liked her topline and underline, strong bone and neat feet. Quarters well developed. A sound mover. 3. Edward’s Kimbajack Liberty Lady. OPEN (12:5) 1. Hopkinson’s Sh.Ch. Kilburnpark Miss Maureen At Rocheby. Really smashing yellow, she is so well balanced. A classy Labrador that I have coveted since I first saw her at 6 months! Quality all through, from her beautiful head and soft expression right through to her super otter tail. Clean well balanced outline, with a strongly set neck, clean over the shoulders and a well laid shoulder. Ribs well sprung, short coupled and firm over the rear with excellent quarters. THE JOINT LABRADOR CLUBS’ CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW HOSTED BY

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB

SATURDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2018 DOGS – Judge: Mr Tony Floyd Dog CC: Douglas’ TALARD CEE THREE PEE OHH Dog RCC: Walton’s GALLYBOB MARMALADE Best Puppy Dog: Douglas’ TALARD CEE THREE PEE OHH I should like to thank the Committee for their invitation to judge this Championship Show. With the help of my very able steward and old friend, David Foulds all went very smoothly, excepting for the unfortunate mishap of a lady falling and injuring her hip whilst running a dog. I wish her a speedy and successful recovery. As with all dog shows there are excellent exhibits, good ones and poor ones, and sadly, too many in the last category. I feel that if exhibitors, who fail to gain placings regularly, were to study the successful exhibits in comparison, they may attempt to improve. With agreement from the co-judge BIS & BPIS was Douglas’ Talard Cee Three Pee Ohh and Res BIS was Hodge’s Naiken Dance Rhythm. VETERAN DOG 7+ YEARS (9:2) 1. Hodge’s Ch Naiken Zephyr. Well known quality black in good condition, lovely typical head & expression, moved OK. 2. Finney’s Parpuckle Blue Spruce. A very nice black in very good condition. Pleasing head, good coat, moved well. 3. Lesley’s Steeleigh Secrets Out JW. SPECIAL WORKING DOG (3:1) 1. Coode’s Ch Warringah’s Perth JW ShCM. A yellow I have always admired since his debut. Really typical, free of exaggeration, who moves true and effortlessly, well proportioned head. Sadly he was lacking coat and was therefore penalised. 2. Finney’s Play On Words. Workmanlike black in hard fit condition, sound and free moving, not quite the breed type or feet of 1. MINOR PUPPY DOG (12:4) 1. Young’s Potterspinney Vanny. Super yellow in excellent coat and condition, stands and shows very well, so easy to assess, good bone and feet and moves with style especially in rear movement, pleasing head and expression. 2. Druggan’s A Sense of Pleasures Get Lucky. Black of good type, very good coat and tail, moved soundly both going and coming, sufficient head for one so young; well shown. 3. Digweed’s Marlyford Valentino at Willokin. 54

PUPPY DOG (12:2) 1. Grummitt’s Suttonpark Phoenix at Manorwell. Stylish yellow who moved and showed very well, good coat and tail, nicely boned with good feet, pleasing head and expression, good reach of neck. 2. Jayes & Caseys’ Sandylands Hit The Road. Typical from this kennel of an almost 12 month old dog, good shape and size, excellent type, sound and free moving, has the hallmarks of a good dog. 3. Allen & Botts’ Tessholly’s Explorer with Allenie. SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG (6 – 15 MONTHS) (7:2) 1. Wood’s Sundyke Secret Code. Excellent young black dog shown to perfection, super head, good length of neck set into well placed shoulders, level topline, good quarters, well boned with good feet, moves very well. A really promising dog. 2. Druggan’s Mafia Labs Taboo Webster at Ballydoodle. Yellow, good type who moved and showed very well, pleasing head, good coat, nice shaped feet, he appears to be a nice steady sensible dog. Perkins’ Ludalor Lyle. JUNIOR DOG (4:0) 1. Douglas’ Talard Cee Three Pee Ohh. What a name! But what a dog! This yellow of almost 12 months stood out from the moment I set eyes on him. MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB OPEN SHOW Speedwell Rooms, Staveley, Chesterfield S43 3JL

SUNDAY 14TH JANUARY 2018 Judge: Jo McDonald Best In Show: Timms’ Lejie Peace Thyme Reserve Best In Show: Hodge’s Naiken Zephyr Best Puppy In Show: Brown’s Ramsayville Rest My Case Minor Puppy Dog (4:2) 1. Lesley’s Steeleigh Miracles Happen. 6 months old, very exuberant black, loved the texture to his coat with correct double thickness and harsh top, lacking in many. Good balance, muscle tone and top line for one so young, movement good once settled. One to watch. 2. Hind’s Tawnybank Heroes ‘N’ Villains. Larger framed yellow, with terrific bone and substance, lovely otter tail. Even though he was carrying excess weight he still managed to drive but would do better without it. Puppy Dog (3:0) 1. Brown’s Ramsayville Rest My Case. Compact typy black, who has just moved into puppy. Everything in the right place, dense coat ending in wonderful otter tail, gentle head with correct eye shape, strong neck, and good front, short coupled well let down hocks, barrel rib. Moved well. All adds up to a very promising youngster - loved him, hope he grows on. BPD, BPIS. 2. Haslam’s Manorwell Buckskin at Lynquest. Yellow, spot on for age and not overdone in any way, liked his leg and balance with correct angulations fore and aft, which reflected in excellent movement, good pasterns with nice tight feet, very promising. 3. Woodall’s - Thirlmere Echo Falls. Junior Dog (3:0) 1. MacLean’s Afinmore Absolut. Black dog, in excellent condition and fit as were all from this kennel, presented a lovely image in profile. Superb coat and tail, held correctly, just my type, kind head with correct length of muzzle and eye shape without any looseness. Excelled in length and sweep of neck into well laid back shoulders. Would have considered for higher honours but felt his movement at rear is not his fortune. 2. Hodgkiss’ Dinnozo Top Notch Alfie. Yellow, deep barrelled in rib but still with balance of body to leg ratio, muscular particularly at rear which helped him drive and retain his shape and line whilst moving. 3. Dawson’s Kowalski Espartaco IV Beskerby (IMP ESP). 65

Yearling Dog (4:0) 1. 2.

3.

MacLean’s Afinmore Absolut. Rowley’s Treantagh Rainbow Warrior. Close decision between one and two as many of the same wonderful attributes; just felt the black moved truer in front. Lovely darker yellow, absolutely right for age with the most appealing head, gentle although, lovely frame, rib, correct type in bone, coat and lovely tight feet. Pushed hard for class. Young’s Potterspiney Allanon

Maiden Dog (0) Novice Dog (2:0) 1.

2.

Woodall’s Thirlmere Echo Falls. Black, third in Puppy, I really liked the leg length and ratio on this larger framed dog, good rear action. At present he presents a very raw picture and needs time to settle and mature, roundness to eye presents a harsher expression than I would like. Dawson’s Kowalski Espartaco IV Beskerby (IMP ESP). Very short coupled, balanced yellow who was third in Junior, with dense, slightly soft coat, well off for bone and substance, tail on the low side, shorter in muzzle with lighter pigment which detracts from a true Labrador expression, needing time to settle and finish.

Undergraduate Dog (5:2) 1.

2. 3.

Lambert’s Bannabeach Finding Nemo at Mattand (IKC). Superb chocolate, with coat of correct outer texture and type, lovely balance of leg length to height. Head having correct length of muzzle, eye shape and colour without excess skin. First rate outline with lovely form to pasterns and well let down hocks ending in tight feet, movement okay. Woodall’s Thirlmere Echo Falls. O’Dell & Bills’ Vetonbetty Chocolate Box.

Post Graduate Dog (8:3) 1. 2. 3.

MacLean’s Afinmore Absolut. Rowley’s Treantagh Rainbow Warrior. Lesley’s Steeleigh Blue Print.

Mid Limit Dog (5:1) 1.

2. 3.

MacLean’s Afinmore Azufral. Excellent type of chocolate which is Labrador all though, shown in fit, hard, muscular condition, excellent bone, rib, masculine head which retains gentleness. Short coupled moved with drive once settled. Everything in the right place and pushed hard for BD, I just plumped for the overall size of the Open Winner. RBD. Brown’s Ramsayville Texas Rising. Short coupled black built on smaller frame, everything in the right place, thick, dense double coat with quality otter tail, strong over hind quarters, preferred head on 1. O’Dell & Bills’ Vetonbetty Chocolate Box. 66

Open Dog (1:0) 1.

Percival’s Wynfaul the Wizard. Substantial black, who I have judged before as a youngster. Presents a pleasing profile with correct type and texture to coat which ending in a thickly clothed, otter tail. Ample bone and coverage, just a tad strong all over for me now in maturity.

Veteran Dog (4:1) 1.

2. 3.

Hodge’s Ch. Naiken Zephyr. A worthy champion who just presents a balanced Labrador, now a veteran, still at his peak and will remain so for a long time. This is a breed that we should allow time to mature and given this they will present us with the best for a much longer period. Of correct size, body, bone and leg length, ending in neat feline feet, strong body and in excellent condition. Composed and calm showman with gentle expression not overdone in any way. Moved ok. Pleased to award his BD, RBIS. Sewell’s Braithwell Dick Dastardly Racinto Breakerswell. Smaller black with kind head. Good coat, tail and rib. Longer in coupling than one. Sewell’s Braithwell Milky Way.

Special Graduate Dog / Bitch (2:1) 1.

MacLean’s Afinmore Absolut.

Special Working Dog / Bitch (2:1) 1.

Coode’s Warringah’s Gulwarra JW. Another lovely chocolate, terrific clean outline, correct weight, balanced with a wonderful sweep of neck into her well laid back shoulders, short coupled, in fit condition, melting head with correct eye shape without any looseness. Moved well. Pushed for higher honours but coat not at its best today which is only temporary!

Minor Puppy Bitch (10:4) 1.

2. 3.

Reynolds’ Carromer Classy Read. And classy she is, heading a lovely class of puppies! 8 month old, dazzling, short coupled black with correct coat, balance and bone, excels in front and top line. Showed well for one so young. Movement not at maturity will watch with interest. BPB Charlton’s Classical Act at Foxrush. Lovely style of yellow, of different type, stronger in head than first, excels in bone, angulations, rib and coat. Strong over loin with tail straight off her back. Moved with drive. Bailiss’ Tissalian Trust Connie.

Puppy Bitch (12:2) 1. 2.

3.

Lewis’ Ramsayville Rags to Riches at Crammondkirk. Pretty, compact bitch, litter sister to BP, one of three pups entered today who are all so similar with the same stamp and attributes, extremely promising. Smaller scale but balanced throughout and moved ok. Coddington & Shortland’s Rocheby Silhouette to Genisival. Lovely darker yellow that moved so well for one so young. So much to like, difficult to assess as the handler did not seem to hold her attention or present her many qualities - correct coat, tail, bone, balance with the prettiest of heads. Timms’ Lejie Heaven Sent. 67

Junior Bitch (5:0) 1. 2. 3.

Charlton’s Foxrush Time to Shine. Strong yellow that retains her femininity, superb barrel of rib, powerful with good angulations in front and rear, correct bone, coat and tail, moved ok. Lewis’ Crammondkirk Rogue Gossip. Smaller yellow, with good bone and lovely tight feet, slightly plainer in head than one but still correct balance in balance, pigment and without coarseness. Presented in fit, toned condition. Woodburn’s Centenalee Miss Madelyn.

Yearling Bitch (12:3) 1. 2. 3.

Reynolds’ Carromers Shimmering Satin. Lovely class, this pretty bitch just commands attention, muscular and fit without coarseness. Excels in coat, bone with head just right for age. Lovely reach of neck and outline held as she moves with drive. RBB Hodge’s Naiken Classical Cliché. Very pleasing chocolate bitch with plenty of bone and substance ending in nice tight feet, good angulations throughout. Preferred cleaner cheek and eyes of winner. Lewis’ Crammondkirk Rogue Gossip.

Maiden Bitch (8:4) 1. 2. 3.

Lesley’s Steeleigh Blue Heaven. Black with ample bone, coat and substance, well balanced all over, good fore-chest, super line and reach of neck, stronger in head but still feminine, moved well. Dobson’s Lakemeadow Love to Dream. Very pretty, shorter coupled yellow built on a smaller frame, lovely type, moved well, just preferred front on 1. Mitchell’s Darmilye Delicious.

Novice Bitch (9:0) 1. 2. 3.

Lesley’s Steeleigh Blue Heaven. Lewis’ Ramsayville Rosy Outlook at Crammondkirk. The last of the terrific trio, almost a clone of her sister, she just did not seem as settled in the ring. Dobson’s Lakemeadow Love to Dream.

Undergraduate Bitch (10:3) 1. 2. 3.

Reynolds’ Carromers Shimmering Silk. Eye catching litter sister to Yearling Winner and stood out from the first appraisal, balanced, good size but without being overdone in anyway and the prettiest of heads. Correct in bone, coat, balance with excellent movement. Woodburn’s Centenalee Bond Girl. Built on a smaller frame but with everything in the right place. Amble bone and coat, moved well preferred length of neck and leg of one. Hall’s Jigalls Ruby Slippers.

Post Graduate Bitch (10:2) 1. 2. 3.

Hodge’s Naiken Carinsia. Really liked this classy black with wonderful line and reach of neck, correct front with superb pastern and neat feet. Lovely type. Schopen’s Barnagrow Altisidora. Another beautiful, short coupled black bitch with classic type, loved her head and overall shape, close up, just preferred front movement on 1st. Culley’s Beneldys Salt Ashe. 68

Mid Limit Bitch (4:1) 1.

2. 3.

Timms’ Lejie Peace Thyme. Beautiful, old fashioned yellow who could have been born 20 or 30 years ago. Nothing overdone, correct in outline, shape, balance, coat and top line, everything in the right place reflected in her drive, with top line held on the move. Gentle and unassuming, one you need to get close up to appreciate her many qualities. Wish we had more of this type. BB, BIS. Schopen’s Barnagrow Nuala. Black bitch presenting a nice outline, good bone, not is as good coat as 1 and could not match her drive. Smith’s Rudidale’s Story Teller.

Open Bitch (7:4) 1. 2. 3.

Hodge’s Naiken Alize. Difficult decision between two lovely bitches that I am sure will change places on other days, I only wish I had two red cards. Stronger Chocolate but not overdone, plenty of size, bone and substance with tail straight off her back. Moved well. Coodes’ Warringah’s Gurley JW. Classic, compact black bitch, short coupled and not overdone in any way, in excellent condition, loved her head just preferred the overall scope of 1. Milner’s Mattand Goldfinger.

Veteran Bitch (7:2) 1. 2. 3.

Harman’s Lakemeadow Lotus Blossom of Kareldis. Lovely black who is in super physical shape for her age which showed in her ease of movement. FIELD TRIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT 2018 have again been invited back for an All Age this coming year. Finally we had our second novice at Wyton, and what was a lovely day it was. It ran very well, but we just could not get a winner.... we will try again this year. Thank you to Paul Sykes and Cliff Chase for all the help you have given me. Thank you also to Chris Green for getting the guns, and for all the work you and Deborah Green put in for the Open Trail and Leverton. Thank you especially to all the land owners who let us have our working tests and trials, as we could not run them without the fantastic grounds we are allowed to use. I hope you all had a good trialling season, and I am looking forward to the season coming up, and I hope you are too and I hope to see you all at the working tests and trials we have planned for you in 2019.

We held three working tests last year: one on new ground at Horkstow Bridge in April, which turned out very well, and where we are planning to go back this year on the 14th April; and our regular novice and cold game tests at Ermine Street Farm, Ancaster. These all went very well, and I hope to see you all at our working tests this coming year. Our first trial was the Open at Belvoir and Wilsford & Sudbrook. The first day at Belvoir saw some excellent dog work and was a very well run day. Then on the second day we moved to Wilsford and Sudbrook where we saw further good dog work, and even a bit of sheep herding when the flock got out through the electric fence! but it was two good days trialling. Our next one was a novice trial at some new ground at Roxby, where we have been invited back again this year. The trial ran well, but it was a long day. Then we had an All Age Trial, held for the first time in some years. It was a good day and ran very well at Leverton, where we

MIDLAND COUNTIES LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB PUPPY GARDEN PARTY AND FUN DAY 2018

Best Puppy Marion Hopkinson’s Minty and Best Veteran Leigh Lesley’s Sybil.

I would like to thank the MCLRC for inviting me to judge this truly lovely and unique event. The weather was amazingly hot but with the excellent facilities and cover, all went well and I only gained a few extra freckles.

It was a great honour to get so close to what I feel will be many future stars and having to place, extremely difficult, I liked them all! The oldies were professionals from start to finish, I absolutely love the veteran classes. The human scurry and races had me in stitches. I feel the Scotland clan need to start charging for their attendance as, boy, did they make it fun! The work behind the scenes is immense but having the opportunity to watch it first hand, quite extraordinary as you all just come together. I would like to personally thank all of the committee for such warmth, kindness and humour, and also for my beautiful photo frame and clock. I shall treasure it. The hub of it all is the beautiful and so welcoming home of Michael and Judi. Thank you so much for the lovely evening and weekend. You are both such good company and absolutely amazing hosts. Hayley Brambles Well done to you all.

Fitness, fun and fresh horizons with your labrador! MCRLC members describe how labs enrich their leisure lives

First off, Emma Stoker (Madgack Labradors) shines a light on Rally Obedience and Canicross. ‘I’ve always enjoyed a range of activities with my showbred Labradors. Over the years we’ve trained for, and competed in Working Trials, Gundog Working Tests, Agility and Rally Obedience Competitions. We’ve also enjoyed Hoopers, Parkour and Canicross – just for fun! Rally Obedience is the latest dog sport to be recognised by the Kennel Club. It’s fun

and easy to get involved and start training and competing. You and your dog work as a team to navigate around a course with numbered signs with different exercises to perform. The signs are based on common obedience exercises. The exercises include sits, down stands, finishes, recalls, as well as exercises involving distance control in the higher levels. The challenge increases as you complete the different levels. I have trained and competed with my own Labradors up to level 6 and am also a Kennel

116

Club Rally Obedience Judge. One of my pups has been chosen as part of the ‘Welsh Rally Obedience Team’ for Crufts 2019. I love competing in Rally and believe it gives us the chance to show just how clever our Labradors really are! Canicross is another activity I enjoy with my dogs. Canicross involves running off-road with your dog. The person wears a waistbelt which attaches via a 2-metre bungee line to a padded, specially designed dog harness. The dog need to be taught to pull into their harness, speed up and

slow down, as well as turn right and left. There are a variety of Canicross events held all over the UK as well as online ‘virtual’ races. K9 Trial Time organise virtual races that you can enter which help to raise money for charity as well as keeping you fit. I run with my Labradors and my Springer Spaniel, we’ve completed a variety of charity runs, both in person and virtual runs We did the Muddy Dog Run earlier year in order to raise funds for Battersea Dogs home.’ Emma Stoker (Madgack Labradors)

Labradors doing agility

by Becci Hodge

The sport of agility arrived in the UK at Crufts in 1978. Although there have been some changes to the equipment for safety reasons and the introduction of a new grading system, the overall principal is still the same, testing the dogs’ fitness and handlers’ ability to train the dog over and through obstacles. Shows are held all round the country on virtually every weekend of the year, with many in the summer months being 2-3 days shows, or even a week long! Any breed can train in agility, providing they are over 1 year of age, and from the age of 18 months they can start competing. Obviously some breeds are more suited to it than others and although Labs may not be the fastest breed of dog they are very reliable and accurate, and compete across the grades with a lot of success. There are 7 grades to

compete in, depending how much the dog and/ or handler has won, and once you have won into Grade 7, you are then eligible to enter ‘champ’ classes in which the agility CC and RCC are awarded, and as in breed classes, you need 3 CC’s to make up an agility champion. There are several types of class: • Agility –all the equipment • Jumping – all equipment except the contacts (A-frame, Dog walk, Seesaw) • Steeplechase – only jumps and tunnels Before each dog competes it must be measured to ensure it competes in the correct height category, there are currently 6 different heights but in 2020 this will be changing to 4. Each course is set and before the class starts the handlers have time to walk the course. The judge sets

118

a time and so any dog outside of this is then faulted. They are also faulted for knocking a pole, taking the wrong course, missing the coloured part on a contact or refusing. There are several finals throughout the year held at Crufts, Discover Dogs, Olympia Horse show and the Kennel Club International Festival,

which people aim to qualify for, as well as 4 levels of agility warrant. If you would like any more information please visit the agility section on the Kennel Club website. Becci Hodge

No Ordinary Show Dog

by Anita Jarvis

On July 11th. 2011 Simandem Wild Thyme (aka “Butty”) was brought home as a ‘normal’ pet Labrador of show-stock breeding. The only criteria my husband insisted on was that he wanted this one to chase a ball. Brulee was of show stock too, and wasn’t remotely interested in retrieving anything, other than a Gravy Bone. So, to have a dog to play with was a bonus.

T

he first time we put Butty in the garden she picked up a tennis ball and was more than happy to fulfil our requirements. Now, usually show-stock Labradors are bred to show off in the ring and take centre stage. Their build is heavier and their desire to retrieve is not as strong, whilst also being quite stubborn when compared to a working lab. Early on we could see that Butty was different; very intelligent, clever, easy to train and a stand out from the rest. I decided to take her to Gundog Training Classes and see what prevailed. If she liked it, we would take it forward, but if it wasn’t for her, then we would just return to normality. It was her call. As it happened, she proved to be a natural and we both really enjoyed it, but there was no way we were going to do cold game. I didn’t like dead things, there was a limit … wasn’t there? So it was just

dummies for us until one day in our training class our training lady produced a very cold pigeon out of the game bag! The bird was hidden away in cover and I cast Butty out for the retrieve, she promptly returned with the bird in mouth and gently handed it to me. I really had to man up, after all, if she had the grace to bring back her first bird for me, then surly I had to accept the kind offering with grace and not dither about not wanting to touch it. From then on everything changed, I got over my fear of dead things and with that in hand it enabled us to join our local shoot, picking up. What a joy that has been, great people and spending the day working as part of a team with your dog… there’s no better way to spend a winter’s day. We then started to compete in Working Tests during the spring and summer seasons. We won our first Certificate of Merit in April 2015, I felt

120

like we had won the lottery, I will never forget that feeling. Our success continued through the year with a 1st in Novice Dog Novice Handler in June (I can’t tell you how thrilled I was for weeks.) We then went on to complete our Kennel Club Working Gundog Certificate in July, which I was invited to Crufts to be presented with it, but I chose to have it sent via post… I just couldn’t wait that long! Our success continued in 2016 with getting placed in various Novice working tests throughout the UK. Then came the Labrador Retriever Club Centenary Show in June where we competed in the Team event, comprising of a ND/ NH, Novice and an Open Dog. I had also entered her in the Open Breed Show, and the Novice Working Test, all of which was taking place over 2 days. We completed the team working tests and then we were in the show ring for the first time. I have no experience of showing, so I recruited my friend Philly to handle her. Bless her little paws, she pranced round the ring and looked beautiful and we came a very respectable 4th, with Butty getting placed in the show ring it gave us an extra point on our team event, and we were awarded 4th place overall. You can imagine how I was feeling…cloud 9 and some. The next day was the Novice Working test, we completed all the tests well, it was tough going, there were zero’s flying around everywhere, and we came 4th, that was a huge achievement when you saw the dogs we were up against. Having been placed we were automatically entered into the “Best looking in Novice Test” where I was showing Butty off in the ring, I know it was a bit of fun, but my legs were trembling. We jogged round, and Butty showed herself off and ....we came 1st! I was buzzing for weeks. The very same friend asked me last year if I was going to enter her in Crufts this year, in the BASC “Best Working Bitch” category. Well why not, Philly was going to handle her again, and it’s something to say you have done and, wow, what a

great day out with your dog. I had to teach her to stand still when a treat was produced, poor girl had always been told to sit when a treat presented itself, so that was a little tricky. We arrived nice and early to get Butty settled and get her in the show ring for some practice. 9am came and we were on. Philly took her, and Butty looked fantastic, even though I say it myself, I was so proud. All I wanted was for her to get noticed, I wasn’t expecting anything at all. She stood beautifully while the judge handled her, she wagged her tail all the time and was enjoying the attention. After all she is “show stock”, it’s her thing, isn’t it? The judge pulled 8 into the middle of the ring and we were in the final 8..... that was enough for me, as getting noticed was all I’d hoped for, and she had certainly been noticed. My heart was in my mouth as she strutted her stuff and it seemed an age before the judge had finished making his decision. A little black working stock bitch took 1st place and my little yellow show stock Butty came 2nd, at Crufts! I’m still on cloud 9 and feel 10ft tall. Butty has taught me so much on our journey together and she continues to do so. She has given me confidence that I never had before. I’ve started creating my own range of feather brooches, mostly pheasant from our shoot. My life has never been the same since that little bundle of fluff arrived in July 2011. She is no ordinary Show dog!

T

his week, I have twice stood by a babbling brook in a pretty wood. With plenty of cover around, and on the last drive of the day, I had four with me, three older but wise and one young. We waited, well back, listening to the gunshots echoing up the little vale before me and watching some lovely high birds going over. Suddenly, a partridge fluttered by and landed in the water. It didn’t look right, so, Fern!

After I dealt with that, a Blackcap in a bush beside me started tweeting about his day, oh how beautifully distracting he was! Rosie then thinks she has seen something behind us and disappears off into the gloom of a couple of conifers, I leave her to it as she’s not going to get into any trouble back there, and maybe she is right, as she has been so often before. The Blackcap ends his song and flies off past a bright patch of berries which are strung over a rope of Old Mans Beard. Rosie returns looking rather embarrassed to be empty handed and sits down behind me to chew on a bit of grass. Finally, the horn blows and we’re off, dogs doing what they love, and they all vanish from sight. Boo is soon back with a partridge and as I move forward past a big Beech tree, Saffy and Rosie appear with hen each. A while later, Fern comes back from somewhere on my left carrying a live cock bird, her ears scooped back, knowing that she is pleasing me, wagging her tail. I walk on, trying not to trip over the fallen branches or 122

get caught on a bramble stem. I then see Saffy on the other side of the brook, pushing her way into some of these brambles, tail wagging furiously, with Rosie on hand on the other side of this tangle to help her. Saffy finds her bird and comes back with pink eye rims and a bloodied nose, she has the heart of a lion! I move slowly on, my game carrier getting

heavier as we near the gun line. A pretty little pond then comes into view and here are lots of other dogs, busy working the water. Boo is here too, being directed by a gun who had stayed behind to watch. Obediently, Boo presents his bird to the gun! I leave my birds by the track where the gator is coming to collect them and I am asked to go and sweep along the other side of a second pond, this is a steep bank and several times I find myself sitting down by accident. The dogs find a couple of more birds and I find a wonderful view of a pretty little waterside cottage, looking like it should be in a fairytale. I turn round and head back, whistling the dogs and head back to the vehicles, with tired dogs, tongues out, panting. This could be the last year for Saffy and Rosie, they are slower these days, but their noses do still work. I was walking back to the car on another drive with Rosie just wombling along next to me when suddenly she darted off into the hedge and found a bird there so maybe she can come out for a drive or two. Fern has taken up the baton, so fingers crossed for her daughter, Charm. I was very upset to lose Rosie only a month later, she’d had a cough and an x- ray revealed tumours in her lungs, so she was not brought around, but let go to prevent suffering.

Exercise induced collapse (EIC) During the festive season we may see people walking unsteadily on their way back from the Xmas party and hear mumbles of “never again as a vague memory of over indulgence returns. Should your young Labrador suddenly exhibit a similar unsteady gait, alcohol is unlikely to be involved! In the Labrador, exercise induced collapse (EIC) is a syndrome seen in young otherwise healthy dogs where the only self inflicted element is their boundless enthusiasm to exercise repeatedly at high activity levels during play or field work. So let’s look at the clinical signs of EIC.

Clinical signs Dogs suffering from the condition are usually otherwise healthy animals and often have an energetic, lively temperament. High activity exercise such as repetitive retrieving can trigger clinical signs after around 20 minutes of field work or play. Initial signs are often mainly in the hind legs with the onset of weakness, a rocky wide based gait followed by collapse. In more severe cases the forelimbs are affected and can show an extended rigid appearance during the episode. The dogs do not appear to be in any pain but may have an anxious expression and pant. High temperatures (42 centigrade) are seen and the excessive panting is probably an attempt to cool down. Patella (kneecap) reflexes are lost during the event but fortunately return as recovery takes place within 30 minutes or so. In very severe cases collapse can result in death but this is rare and often recovery is uneventful.

Treatment During collapsing episodes cooling the dog by wetting with tepid water will help any associated hyperthermia and gentle reassurance can reduce stress until recovery follows. Some individuals have been treated with preventative phenobarbital but any benefit may be due to its mild sedative action, given that an excitable temperament increases the risk of the condition manifesting itself. Diagnosis EIC is a genetic disorder and research has discovered an association between a genetic mutation, Dynamin-1, and the condition. This has enabled a DNA test to be developed and screening for the condition is available to help plan breeding strategies. The gene is recessive which means individuals can carry the gene without being clinically affected. To be symptomatic puppies would have to inherit one recessive gene from both parents. Details of UK laboratories that can process samples are available on the Kennel Club website. Your veterinary surgeon will need to consider other causes of collapse in young Labradors including cardiac, neurological, orthopaedic and metabolic problems. Blood test results are usually unremarkable in cases of EIC which is useful in excluding other conditions from the differential diagnosis list. Prevention The availability of genetic screening affords an opportunity to plan breeding to avoid a double recessive offspring. A positive diagnosis in a dog suspected of having the condition allows the owners to curtail exercise at the first signs of rear limb weakness. This is important as continued high intensity exercise when signs first present would potentially increase the risk of a poor outcome. Fortunately most affected dogs can lead a relatively normal life. The activity triggers can be avoided, mild to moderate is tolerated and episodes become less frequent as the dog matures. As we raise a glass to welcome the New Year we should all continue to raise awareness of what is probably an under diagnosed condition and look forward to a happy and healthier future.
