FACULTY/STAFF RECREATION PROGRAMS
Miami Recreation has partnered with Human Resources to introduce a faculty and staff program this semester. The program includes a variety of free programs and special events that will take place all academic year for faculty and staff, as well as graduate students. The program includes an offering of five free fitness classes per week as well as free access to the Rec Center every Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. There you can partake in a variety of activities including basketball, pickleball, swimming, the track, or just utilize general fitness equipment in the fitness center. PROJECT UPDATES
Finance and Business Services Marketing Team
Goggin Ice Center Employee Spotlight
Elliott Delker works as a Building and Grounds Tech for Goggin Ice Center. He began working at Goggin in 1999 when it was referred to as the Goggin Ice Arena, instead of Goggin Ice Center, as we know it today. The old arena was demolished in 2006 after serving the Miami community as the home for RedHawks hockey and skating for nearly 30 years.
When asked what Elliott’s proudest accomplishment at Goggin was, he answered, “Completing the transition and the first year of the new Goggin in 2006.” That project was no small task. In fact, the construction of Goggin Ice Center at its new location on Oak St. cost $34.8 million. The transition to the new facility required great effort from not only donors and construction crews, but the Goggin staff as well. Elliott takes pride in his work and he has served Miami University proudly for over 20 years. His supervisor, Jon Elliott, had this to say about Delker’s work ethic:
“Elliott is an invaluable resource for communicating things that need to be fixed around the building. Elliott takes a tremendous amount of pride in the work he does and his areas of responsibility are always highly graded. He also has the best attendance record of anyone I have ever known, possibly of anyone at Miami current and past.”
Goggin Ice Center holds itself to a standard of excellence in serving the Miami Community that can only be possible through individuals such as Elliott. When asked, “If you could switch your job with anyone else at Goggin Ice Center, whose job would you want?” he responded “No one.” The pride that Goggin’s staff take in their work is visible through the quality of the facilities and through the fantastic people who call Goggin home, such as Elliott.

NEW FBS MARKETING TEAM MEMBERS!
FBS Marketing
The Finance and Business Marketing team recently added two team members: Duncan Underhill, Graphic Design Specialist and Ruth Nogi, Print Production and Design Manager. They recently installed their first large project in Western Dining Commons, a Rooted Grounds wall design (previous page), that tells the story of Rooted Grounds’ blend that was specially made for Miami called Miami Grind.
Duncan is a new and excited graphic designer who enjoys staring at fonts and making puns. He is looking forward to creating a wide variety of projects and seeing them shown all over campus.
Ruth Nogi is a recent Columbus College of Art and Design graduate with a BFA in 3D Animation. She enjoys problem-solving and tackling the challenges that being a Print Production and Design Manager brings. When she's not at work she enjoys playing with her daughter, video games, drawing, attending sporting events, and indulging in her husband's Japanese culture. Keep a lookout for more to come!
CENTRAL CAMPUS HOT WATER CONVERSION
Robert Bell
The hot water conversion project is a critical step in Miami’s Utility Master Plan, which reduces energy consumption and our campus’ carbon footprint. As a signatory to the President’s Climate Leadership Commitment, Miami is pledging to become carbon neutral. This project is a necessary step toward achieving this goal.
The project will convert nine buildings from steam to low temperature hot water. In addition to the buildings that are being converted under this project, the work is preparing for the future conversion of several other campus buildings. Since 2008, Miami has reduced its energy consumption and carbon emissions by more than 50% per square foot of building space.
This project will create a hot water plant in the basement of Upham Hall. This phase is already complete and operational. This past summer piping was installed from Upham through the Hub Quad and toward Harrison Hall. The project continues this fall semester into the summer to install piping past the front of King Library. This spring semester, additional piping will be installed by McGuffey Hall and then east past Bishop Hall, Alumni Hall, and Kreger Hall toward Armstrong Student Center. When the project completes in the summer of 2023, it will have installed approximately 12,000 feet of piping and converted 10 buildings off of steam, and nine onto hot water.
DON'T MISS THE BUS!
Jennifer Herman
Do you enjoy riding the bus around campus? Did you know that Miami's online campus map can display real-time bus locations? Well, campus map users can access and track bus locations via the Transit menu (if you have not used the map recently it may take a few seconds for the Transit menu item to appear). This tool allows users to select one or more routes to display on the map, making it easier for people to find the best route to get where they are going. This feature helps transit riders stay up-to-date with reliable, real-time information making sure they don't miss the bus!

WHAT'S NEW WITH DINING
Christian Wallace
If you've ventured into Armstrong this semester you may have noticed a lot of changes to the restaurants inside. Starting off, we have Field to Fork. Similar to Subway, Field to Fork is a fresh salad concept where instead of a sub, you get to create any salad just the way you like it with an abundance of toppings to choose from. A great and tasty option especially for those with dietary restrictions or people wanting to be more health conscious.
Next is Eiffel Pizza and Pasta, a Halal pizzeria created by Chef Mohammed. Mohammed studied the art of creating delicious pizzas and pasta at an award-winning Italian culinary school in
France! With his training in the art of gourmet French-style pizza, he has designed his signature Halal menu of zany pizza creations and pasta that guests can love and enjoy.
Then we have Kabar, an Asian bistro that serves a variety of delicious hot and cold meals including sushi, stir fry, and other Asian inspired options. Finally, there is Haines' which is returning as Evergrains at Haines'. A restaurant with plenty of fresh offerings for all your Mediterranean cravings. However, get ready because Panera is making its debut at Miami University in Fall 2023! Until then, go explore these other great options inside of Armstrong.
MEET MOHAMMED! THE OWNER AND CHEF BEHIND EIFFEL PIZZA AND PASTA
Christian Wallace
After practicing professionally in Paris, Mohammed Diop brought his training in the art of gourmet French-style pizza to the states and has been baking his signature Halal menu of zany pizza creations and pasta for guests since 2016.
FRIENDLY BAKERY OPTIONS IN THE DINING COMMONS
Christian Wallace
Many of us love dessert, especially when they are warm and fluffy. Sadly, not everyone can enjoy them due to different allergies and other dietary restrictions. But what if you found out that you no longer have to worry about whether you can or can’t enjoy a delicious treat when going to eat at different dining locations on campus?
Well that's exactly what’s happening as Miami Dining Services has introduced special Red Plate pastries to the dining commons. You can now enjoy pastries like chocolate chip cookies and blueberry muffins without fear since special Red Plate bakery items are all made without the top eight allergens! So go and try one of these tasty sweets at any dining common of your choice.
We want your feedback!
Christian Wallace
Do you have any opinions you would like to share about dining at Miami?

2022 ORSA CONFERENCE
Rec Center Staff, FBS Marketing
This fall, Miami Rec Center staff and marketing team attended the Annual 2022 ORSA (Ohio Recreational Sports Association) Workshop at the University of Cincinnati. This conference included over 100 recreational professionals, students, and grad assistants from a wide variety of institutions across Ohio. The association serves as a network for recreational professionals to share ideas, create professional growth opportunities, and build relationships with other programs across the state.
This was the first year ORSA was able to return to a full conference after a virtual conference in 2020 and then a condensed, one day, conference at The Ohio State University in 2021. The committee members and leadership team felt it was imperative to return to a normal conference with a strong schedule filled with round tables, presentations, and opportunities to network and socialize.
The highlight of the conference was the keynote speaker, Paul Wesselmann, The Ripples Guy. Paul led several sessions that included a unique combination of keynote inspiration, network discussion, and workshop content. Everyone who attended left with a refreshed attitude, a renewed sense of connection to their colleagues, and a toolkit filled with practical ideas to manage the ongoing challenges and changes that we are all facing.
"The entire conference was much needed in so many ways. People across the state are experiencing a wide range of challenges such as staff shortages, burnout, turnover, and adjusting to so many new trends in our field. We need this opportunity to connect with our peers, relate to others, discuss solutions, and get a renewed sense of inspiration to continue striving for excellence in the recreation field."
