Brood X

They're Back!! - Brood X Cicadas It’s been 17 years since their last visit. It’s safe to say that most of us aren’t going to welcome the Brood X cicadas back with open arms, but let’s try to make the most of their visit! This particular Brood is different from previous years because it’s going to be the largest predicted amount of cicadas to emerge since 2004. There’s no need to worry if you’re an entomophobe, a person who fears insects - these cicadas are harmless! The thing that sets Brood X apart from the annual cicadas we see is its proximity to large metropolitan areas. With Oxford being close to Cincinnati, we are lucky enough to be in an area where the Brood will appear. These little buggers

will only last about four to six weeks after they emerge, so their stay is short lived. They do, however, make a lot of noise - cicadas have been reported to be loud enough en masse to drown out the sound of passenger jets passing directly overhead. Talk about loud! Miami’s campus is a prime location for Brood X cicadas to stay during their visit in the midwest. All of the trees throughout campus, the Formal Gardens, Western’s Campus, and much more are the perfect conditions for the cicadas to emerge. The cicadas will even be showing off their Miami spirit with their distinct red eyes.

Miami Events, Moving Forward:

Springing toward a Summer Season

In collaboration with Campus Service Marketing, Conference Services developed the campaign “Miami Events, Moving Forward” to capture the numerous efforts needed to have those summer camps and conferences we are privileged to bring to campus. Hosting events and gathering in groups and for conferences will happen again. This campaign was used to disseminate information to those looking to join us again in the future. The planners of events, the parents of campers, and attendees alike look to departments like Conference Services for messages of how we’ll accomplish the safe services of dining, housing and educational sessions as we transition out of the COVID-19 pandemic. As recommendations from the CDC, guidelines from the State of Ohio, and policies from Miami University are determined, these must be applied to the planning of each event hoping to return to Miami this summer. "As everyone has experienced over this past year, it has been necessary to strengthen our flexibility in the face of constant change. Exploring new ways to deliver some level of service to our guests is critical. The Conference Services team has worked diligently to find ways to safely bring groups to campus and adjust our services in this interesting time," said Bryan Gutridge, Sr. Director of Event Services. One additional aspect of this campaign included the preparation of virtual and hybrid meeting services. Hybrid services, in particular, are expected to be desired by events in the coming years, to allow for remote audiences to participate in the event. Conference Services staff have studied the various technologies available to professionally deliver these services. They are working toward becoming skilled with them, adding new services to offer to our potential clients.

Miami Grind has hit the shelves at Jungle Jim’s! APIDA Collaboration May marks the beginning of Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American Heritage Month and Miami Food and Beverage was thrilled to partner with the Sikh Student Association, Indian Students Association and the Asian American Association to present a cultural celebration meal at Western Dining Commons. With guidance from the students, the menu featured items such as butter chicken, aloo gobi, and kheer rice pudding. A big thank you to the culinary team at Western for their amazing execution of this collaborative event.

Stop by today to pick up your favorite Miami roast in K-cups or ground coffee bags. Campus Services has been grinding to extend the Miami Grind brand into more and more retailers across the Cincinnati area to enjoy. Along with its introduction into Jungle Jim’s, there are plans to continue expanding into more chains including UDF. In and outside of Oxford, you will now be to suffice your Miami Grind craving.

Please allow me to express my sincere gratitude to you for pushing through the spring semester. This has been the toughest academic year we have ever experienced and we have proven once again that we are capable of achieving anything we put our minds to. I applaud the determination and effort you have demonstrated during this past year. We still have a lot of work to do over the next several months to be ready for the start of the fall semester and we have the best combination of talent, skills, and attitude that add up to success. I recognize that this has not been easy or ideal but thank you for making a difference in Campus Services, it is the difference we needed. Salsa Coming in Hot for Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican army over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s “Independence Day” - that is a much more important holiday celebrated on September 16. Although a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo evolved into a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture here in the United States. Initially observed by Mexican-Americans in California and urban areas, it has become a national day of festivities. This is in no small part due to marketing campaigns by the beer and wine industry, resulting in beer sales on par with Super Bowl Sunday. Whatever the underlying reason for the day’s widespread popularity, Cinco de Mayo gives us yet another reason to learn more and celebrate the contributions of Mexican-Americans. We all are so lucky (and happy!) to have access to a wide variety of Mexican food. So, in the spirit of the day, here’s a tasty and easy tomato salsa – one you can make in May before fresh tomatoes are available around here.

Welcome Home Box

Food Drive Partnership

As we enter another summer with virtual orientation, departments across campus have been creating new ways to help the incoming freshmen class feel welcome and get excited about joining the Miami family in the fall. This project is the work of various departments within Campus Services working collaboratively to welcome the incoming class with a Welcome Home Box.

Food & Beverage is partnering with Global Business Brigades to allow students to donate their extra declining balance dollars to benefit the Talawanda Oxford Pantry. The Food & Beverage concepts participating in this partnership are Scoreboard, Marketing Street at MacCracken, and Emporium Market. Suggested donations include: tuna, cold cereal, peanut butter, canned vegetables, bar soap, body wash, and other non-perishable foods and personal hygiene products. This partnership is a wonderful opportunity to allow Miami students to give back to the local Oxford community and the Food & Beverage Team is grateful to be a part of this worthwhile project. The food drive runs May 3rd-12th so keep a lookout at these market locations for this event.

Participants include: - Campus Services - Student Life - Parent & Family Programs - Orientation & Transition Programs - Alumni - Presidents Office - Goggin Ice Center - MUPD - MiTech - Brick & Ivy/eCampus - Miami Health Center Campus Services is excited to welcome the incoming freshmen class to Miami with this special gift. Check out June’s Edition of Cornerstone to hear more about the Welcome Home Box project.
