In the previous post we explained on how your business’ online presence number one priority is to have a website. But you can’t have a website go live on the internet until you purchase a domain name.
You may be thinking why would we publish owning a website post before purchasing a domain name post?
Well it’s because a website can still be built without purchasing a domain name. What stands in the way of the website going ‘live’ on the world wide web is the name of the website and it’s registration. Therefore you must purchase a domain name and we will tell you how. But before you do, read this post because choosing your new company name is preferred to be the same as your website name and vice versa.
Without going into the technical details of IP address allocation (IP being Internet Protocol) and lots of network engineering jargon, each website needs a name (domain name) registered for it on a registrar site like:
godaddy.com or 123reg.co.uk
A domain name is the name given to the website, such as:
www.google.com or www.clickstartyourbusiness.com
These names are called ‘Domain Names’ because they hold a place on the internet reserved for that website. (Not that you need to know this but that reservation is an IP- Internet Protocol – address).
For example, if an entrepreneur decided that they wanted to start a business online that helps other entrepreneurs ‘click start’ their business (like this one) and they wanted to call this business – Click Start Your Business. The obvious choice for their website’s name would be “clickstartyourbusiness.com” and an attempt to purchase a domain name called “clickstartyourbusiness.com” would be made via one of the aforementioned registrar sites (www.godaddy.com, www.123reg.com or one of the many website registration sites online).
But since we are Click Start Your Business, we went through the process of purchasing a domain name, searched it and found that we were able to purchase a domain name called “clickstartyourbusiness.com” so we bought it.
This means we own this domain name and it is up to us how we use it. We can run our website on it (as we are) and the website’s content can be whatever we want it to be from blogging to an online shop. The other option to sell the domain name for however much you want to if a company really wants to use that domain name for themselves. You can choose how long you want to own the domain name for and that will obviously depend on the price you pay for it. There is a business opportunity here for purchasing a domain name or multiple domain names and selling it for a profit. Entrepreneurs are doing this right this very second and is a very profitable business – but we can explain in greater detail in another post so stay tuned..
For example the domain www.insurance.com is worth $35.6M !! because it’s so easy to remember and would generate so much organic traffic for people just simply typing in a search engine the word insurance. This potentially has the power over any competition to build a huge customer base not only the ability to have a

Getting back to the entrepreneur that wanted to purchase a domain by the name of ‘clickstartyourbusiness.com’ They would have to purchase a domain name that is different, because we here at Click Start Your Business, have registered the domain name ‘clickstartyourbusiness.com’. So the entrepreneur could purchase a domain name like click “starting” your business.com if that was available, but if his/her business was called something different then it just seems weird that company name and website name differ and the visitor could be deterred away from the site for this tiny detail (because they may feel it’s a scam or unreal).
For example
www.adidas.com or www.cocacola.com
If Adidas used something like www.sportsequipmentandclothing.com it would seem very weird and potential customers would be put off, same applies for Coca Cola. (Obviously we know and love these brands we just used them here as examples as they’re huge brands).
The fact that business name and website name are the same seems more congruent, more flowing, more grouped and with a sense of togetherness and order.
This means that when thinking of your company name, if you haven’t got one already, first thing to check is whether or not your company name has been taken online. Likelihood is that it has already been registered, therefore you have to wait until the ‘term’ (the term is the time the registered keeper of that domain has ownership, this is specified at the time you purchase a domain name it can be 1,2 or 5 years) is up for that particular domain name or you can buy it of the owner for a price he or she will determine.
Also try and purchase a domain name that ends in .com. This is the globally recognised website and allows for your company to be global not just regional like a .co.uk or .ca or .es which means U.K, California and Spain respectively. This is not essential but it does help. These endings are called extensions and there are many like .com (of course), the regional which we’ve just mentioned (.co.uk) for Television .TV clubs .club, .org, .biz and lots more, but try and purchase a domain name with .com.
So in summery, you now know what a domain name is and how to purchase a domain name. You know to call your business the same as an available to purchase domain name and you know to try to purchase a domain name with a .com extension. You also know where you can purchase a domain name, but there is good news at the end of all this!!
