Agnes Water, Queensland alinghi
ALINGHI, A SENSE OF FLOATING ON THE OCEAN
Privately nestled in a 5ha estate on the Southern Great Barrier Reef overlooking Honeymoon Bay and the surrounding Pacific Ocean, it’s easy to understand why alinghi has previously been voted one of the world’s top five beach houses in the world.
Beautifully designed by signature architect James Grose as a retreat space for contemplation, this luxury pavilion style residence was built with minimal impact on its natural environment to give the sense of floating above the ocean. Perfectly positioned high on the edge of a sand dune and rocky escarpment facing northeast across the South Pacific, the views are mesmerising and vast.
Aliinghi is a striking architectural statement in cedar, glass and travertine stone with two pavilions forming the accommodation linked by a concretecovered way. The main pavilion is designed with large living spaces opening onto semienclosed areas providing retreat from the wind or for basking in the Queensland sun. The second pavilion is a retreat with master bedroom and private study or wellness space. Both buildings are adjacent to a large travertine platform created as a rock shelf, surrounded with shallow water pools, to anchor the pavilions on the north and south and to the west, with the open concrete walkway framing the bush.
External materials and colours were specifically chosen to disappear over time, fading to a silver grey, blending with the landscape and the silvery bark of the trees. Arctic cedar clads the exterior of the house. Selected for its hardy and low maintenance elements, the timber has faded beautifully with exposure to the Queensland sun.
Alinghi is self-sufficient for water with tanks collecting abundant rainfall, whilst air conditioning is unnecessary as clever design, allowing for cross-ventilation, and the position of the house combine to allow cool ocean breezes to freely flow.
AN ARTFUL ASSEMBLY OF MARBLE, TIMBER AND CONCRETE
The main pavilion showcases an array of living and entertaining spaces both indoor and out. The lounge area has a dramatic double height ceiling in honey tones with open fireplace for cooler nights. Four large bedrooms, two with ensuites plus a separate bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms.
The second pavilion is home to a private master bedroom plus study and/or wellness pavilion, all with striking ocean views and framed with soft native landscaped gardens.
This is a retreat style home that is perfectly created for entertaining with
a selection of in and outdoor spaces to entertain or to just quietly sit in a view and reflect. There is always somewhere to escape from sea-breezes as the sides of the two timber boxes slide apart to create a variety of internal/external spaces.
Alinghi, along with the other five houses on the estate, shares a private beach at Honeymoon Bay, a 30-metre saltwater pool by the ocean, entertaining cabana with barbecue facilities and tennis court and fulltime caretaker on site.
Wildlife such as wallabies, echidnas, goannas, turtles, and migratory whales
plus a diverse range of birds are plentiful. Purposely designed, Alinghi’s external lighting is all low voltage so as not to upset local wildlife, in particular nesting turtles who return to Rocky Point to breed.
