How is pride celebrated around the world?

The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association reported in 2019 that 172 Pride Parades and Festivals would take place in more than 50 countries around the world! The pandemic didn't stop celebrations and most city events went virtual 💻

The images above show celebrations (pre-pandemic!) from parades in Copenhagen, Madrid, Sydney, Tokyo, and New York!

What pride is to us? "Pride to me is a reminder. A reminder of where we have come from. A reminder of the things we have been through (and overcome), but also a reminder to keep fighting. A reminder that it is ok to be me. A reminder that I am not alone. A reminder that this community (and me) is strong, worthy, and beautiful. Pride is about loving who I am and fighting for who I am." Connor Smale “Although for a long time I saw pride as a celebration of being a part of the LGBTQA+ community, over the last few years I’ve seen it more as its inception — a protest. It’s a moment for the entire community to stand together against the injustices and violations placed upon us, and ultimately find comfort, love, and compassion from one another.” Niall Taylor “To me Pride means a celebration of individuality and the fact that everyone has the right to be whoever they want to be without feeling shame or judgement. Pride is the opportunity for us to reflect and remind ourselves that we should embrace uniqueness and our authentic selves every day of the year, not just during Pride. It’s a time for us be honest with ourselves about the scrutiny and obstacles that the LGBTQIA+ community have faced and ensure that no one has to face that again, whilst we celebrate what makes everyone special & unique. “ Fran Elliott "Personally, Pride is an opportunity for me to reflect on the challenges that the LGBTQIA+ community have experienced – and still continue to do so today – and learn what I can do to change things for the better. Professionally, it’s an opportunity for me to help elevate and amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, but above all, it’s a moment to make sure my loved ones feel seen and celebrated 🌈" Holly Broome

What pride is to us? "Pride to me embodies the essence of freedom. As a heterosexual woman I have often taken it for granted that no third party (nosey parents excluded) has the [legal] right to tell me who I can love. I have never had to worry about being abused for holding hands with my partner or double check to see if we would be welcome at a hotel. Seemingly simple rights that have not always been granted to everybody and sadly are still not. I have seen the pain that this type of discrimination causes with those close to me from the LGBTQIA+ community and for that reason (amongst many others) I stand in allyship with LGBTQIA+ community to defend their right to love and live in full expression of who they are without fear." Alicia Hickey "Pride means so many things for so many reasons for me as it is an excellent time to celebrate my identity within the LGBTQIA+ community, and fully surround myself with Queerness and the increased availability in Queer events and socialising. But is also an important time to reflect, to work for visibility, inclusion, education and recentre myself and other in its origins in protest and a fight for rights and equality: I can truly see companies that are performative, marketing vs genuine, and you can see even on an individual level peoples own attitudes." Ryan Notman-Watt "To me, Pride is a celebration of how far we’ve come but a reminder of how far we have to go." Olivia Morris

LGBTQIA+ and Cult Beauty Brands Celebrations in mind, we wanted to spotlight a few brands we stock here at Cult Beauty that are Queer owned/founded. As part of this mini series, we want to talk about hero products, and some of the great inspiration behind the brands!

Jerrod and Jeremy, the founders of Too Faced. Starting their careers behind a makeup counter, they wanted to create a serious makeup brand that knows how to have fun. If you haven't tried, or least heard of the Better Than Sex Mascara, where have you been? This is a holy grail product in the beauty industry. The formula thickens, lengthens, and curls, while creating a more dramatic look with each coat. The iconic hourglass wand helps to create volume, lift, and coat every single lash, top to bottom. Grace - Cult Concierge: "I’ve tried so many mascaras over the years and keep going back to this one! It gives my lashes SO much length and volume and never smudges. Plus I'm obsessed with the packaging!"

Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz. Matthew has suffered from skin conditions such as eczema, seborrhea and rosacea. After identifying an opportunity in the skincare market, Matthew and Andrew developed a business plan...

Award winning and our most reviewed Malin & Goetz product at Cult Beauty, the eucalyptus deodorant is an iconic product. It contains refreshing natural eucalyptus extract and odor-neutralizing citronellyl to be appropriate for all skin types, especially sensitive. With odour-dispelling abilities, this is a vegan, natural alternative to aluminium-based deodorants that quickly absorbs and leaves no stains whilst keeping you fresh all day Connor - Cult Concierge: "I have officially put my aerosol deodorant away! This keeps me fresh all day long and smells really fresh and clean. A bonus: I am always wearing black and this did not stain any of my clothes!"

LGBTQIA+ and Cult Beauty Brands Nicolas Travis, the founder of Allies of Skin, had bad acne when he was young, but didn't have a lot of money or skincare knowledge. Nicolas spent spent about two-and-a-half years doing research and development, but only had enough money to launch one product. With help from his brother and sister, he was able to launch three products and the brand started With 20% Vitamin C and Orange Extract Complex, this next-generation serum will protect your skin from daily external aggressors and pollutants while leaving you with brighter, firmer skin. There is nothing this product can not do. It will strengthen your skin barrier, encourage cellular renewal, boost elasticity and smoothness, and diminish dullness Syhem - Cult Concierge: "I love this serum because it does everything I want (and more!). Hello firm, plump and bright complexion, the waterless formula means that it is super potent and stable. It feels incredible and delivers results faster than any other I tried before, please don't buy all of them after I said this, because I won't know what to do with my life if I run out of it!"

Enrico Frezza, Founder and CEO of Peace Out Skincare. Enrico has suffered severe acne since his teens. In 2014 a pretty bad acne breakout became the catalyst for him to go from a career in cyber security to devoting himself full-time to finding a solution.

If you ever have a blemish, these are an absolute must. They contain Retinol to help promote clearlooking skin while Aloe Vera gently soothes and minimizes the appearance of redness. They help to absorb excess oil, impurities and bacteria, while forming a protective layer from external Look out for a little aggressors.
