European Modern & Contemporary Art

T

hese are indeed exciting times for the growing segment of young collectors and connoisseurs of European Art as the Fine Arts industry has and continues to evolve rapidly. European Art; the art form itself continues to evolve with the times as artists are constantly being influenced by the spirit of the times. The results are artworks that are multidisciplinary; from Renaissance to Pop Art and mixed media.

With a passionate love for the art masters and their artworks from the Renaissance period, Sebastiano Navarra (Italy) infuses elements from the masters of the revered era and today’s art forms onto his artworks. Sebastiano’s acrylic on wood artwork entitled ‘Those Flowers So Beautiful’ has an estimate of S$11,500 to S$13,500. Alexey Alpatov (Russia) neo-realistic paintings are rich in depth and are often compared to black and white photography. The capturing of light and reflectivity are hallmarks of Alexey’s artworks. Alexey’s works on canvas are estimated from S$7,000 onwards.

‘Transformation’ is estimated between S$9,000 to S$12,000. Guus Van Eck (Holland) is known for his distinctive, childlike, colourful paintings. Intimate images and fine details marked in richly exuberant backdrops are hallmarks of Guus’s style. EXTRAPOLATING FROM THE PAST FOR AN IRONIC GAME. Everything arises from examining the Great Masters of the Renaissance, whose art always stimulated my fantasy from the very first years of entering the “Academy.” With the passing of the years these Renaissance painters have become part of Myself. At 20, as a beautiful young man with all the arrogance of youth, then later developed into a much admired Designer, in a historical moment of youth movements, involved in an exclusive group of creative people “in the know”, they recognized me to be a leader. Over the years my interest changed, orienting towards a more material direction, both concrete and positive. There my enquiry gravitated to the concept of “The Beauty of Allure” that combines Art, Creativity and Marketing, captivating the essence of Pop Art, but not rising to the empirical level of great art. Doing an easy job, colourful, breaking boundaries between Street Art and highly stylized Graphic Art, Comics and “L’art de Gallerie”. I present...my work! EXTRAPOLATING FROM THE PAST FOR AN IRONIC GAME. Sebastiano Navarra – Bali, 2013.

Asian Contemporary Art

A

sian Art has always been steeped in rich and extensive history and the interest in art from the Eastern half of the world has always been the subject of much interest and critical observation. In this auction, Lucanna brings forth an extraordinary selection of paintings of varying styles and media, from established local masters and overseas Asian artists. This sale will be a treat for the seasoned collector and an eye-opener for young art connoisseurs. Casting ordinary moments of people and their daily rituals observed during his travels as his main subject matter, Eng Tay’s (Malaysia) artworks has gained much recognition within Asia and his adopted home in New York. Eng Tay’s Oil on Canvas entitled ‘Morning Song’ is being offered at estimates of S$20,000 – S$25,000. Aw Tee Hong (China) often paints subjects such as – samsui women, hawker and coolies. However, he was best known for his oil paintings of the old Singapore River. Aw’s works was always well received in whatever medium used thus indicating his versatil-

ity and inventiveness. One of the painting here portrays traditional rural living in a fishing village in Terengganu (Malaysia) where fishing boats are perched on the coastline. A unique piece done in 1985. Ceramic artist Chuan Siang Boon (Singapore) is Singapore’s homegrown master potter. Boon’s fine ceramic artworks are well collected by the Singapore Government and the preferred choice as diplomatic gifts for foreign dignitaries and royalties. Boon’s ceramic pot entitled ‘Meiping’ which is also special piece kept among the artist’s private collection is being offered at this sale. Henri Chen KeZhen (Singapore) is an internationally recognised abstract ink and wash painter known for his ability to skillfully assimilate Chinese and Western art forms within a single canvas. Henri’s art, displays the orthodox marks of the Chinese brush but they are recontextualised and reinterpreted within the realm of abstract expressionism. Both pieces from the “Summer Lotus Series” offered are from the private collection of The American Club in Singapore. 10

Fan Shao Hua (China/Singapore), a Ph.D. in Research of Fine Arts at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore was also awarded the 19th UOB Painting of the Year. Weaving both contemporary and traditional styles seamlessly, Fan’s ink and mixed media on paper entitled ‘Above the Earth’ is sure to be an attraction for the discerning collector. ‘Maestro painter of the Changbaishan mountains’ Liu Guo (China) is a master painter of the Chinese landscape and one of ’100 Greatest Talents of China’ today. Liu Guo’s ink on paper artwork entitled ‘The Wind of Spring Brings Warmth’ is from the artist’s own private collection. Yu Nancheng (China) revolutionized the world of Chinese oil painting with his breakthrough technique of layers by palette knife, creating a blend of Western and Chinese techniques through his artworks. Nancheng’s oil on canvas artwork entitled ‘CSS Tai Chi Step Grasp the Bird’s Tail’ exudes a spirit of understated inner peace and harmony. Included in this collection is South Korean artist, Park Seung Mo who creates giant ephemeral portraits by cutting layers after layers of wire mesh, casting a 3D image from within and creating a sense of transience or illusion. Offered here is a smaller piece by the artist titled ‘Gandhi’, a man who was larger than life, and a father of a Nation.

However, he was best known for his oil paintings of the old Singapore River. The artist has developed a distinctive style over decades and is evidently seen in his bold strokes which are penetrating and powerful. His play of colors in the oil works has strong contrast with little attention to detail. Such are his expression which conveys different emotions. Aw’s works was always well received in whatever medium used and this indicates his versatility and inventiveness, usually bold and unique. He is an expressionist artist who pays attention to details in life and practical application. 11

Beyond the familiar landscapes, there is a kind of suspense which Loo Hooi Nam paintings extend to viewers : the experience of being there with him. In Relax Ripples, he captures a fleeting moment at an old jetty with swift unrestrained brushwork that encapsulate his instinctive impulses and feeling for the place he is painting. At once we can feel the white bursting clouds, breeze and current that tilt the boats in the painting as if we were there with him. 12

Fine Art and Exquisite Luxuria Auction April 2015 Edition Lot 14 Chuan Siang Boon (b. 1955, Singapore) Mei Ping Oil Spot Tenmoku 34cm (h) x 24 cm (w) Stoneware, Wheel throwing, Firing at 1200°C Signed and carved at bottom base Estimate: S$3,000 – S$5,000 Expertly and uniquely crafted as a single solid structure as compared to other Mei Ping vases made in earlier eras that required 2 or 3 split sections to complete the entire vase. This special Tenmoku technique requires high iron glazes applied in thick layers, which bubble up through one another and generate patters ranging from metallic streaks to spots. Tenmokus are known for their variability. During their heating and cooling, several factors influence the formation of iron crystals within the glaze. While the glaze is molten, iron can migrate within the glaze to form surface crystals, as in the “oil spot” glaze, or remain in solution deeper within the glaze for a rich glossy color.

Fine Art and Exquisite Luxuria Auction April 2015 Edition Inspired by memory, the artist’s depictions are often aesthetic exaggerations in the pursuit of arresting visual impact. His ‘Tai Chi’ series was inspired by the sight of thousands practicing Tai Chi at Tiananmen Square in China. Lot 29 Gabriel DFQ (b. 1982, Singapore) Find a Word for it “Queen Elizabeth II” Mixed Media on Canvas (1953 vintage newspaper clips, acrylic and varnish) 122 x 95 cm Signed and dated on reverse Estimate: S$12,000 – 14,000

In his current work “Find A Word For It”, the artist explores the genesis of popular icons and stereotypes. He reveals how the media infuses preconceived images, opinions and judgments into people’s mind through the use of words. This series is the conclusion of many years of reflection on political icons construction, wondering “how political power can build such icons? What is the weight of words in building memories and images?” Gabriel’s works look easy to access, portraying familiar individuals. But when you look at one of Gabriel’s works, you should always think twice as the obvious is not necessarily what the artist intends to convey. It requires plunging into the canvas to feel and weight the

21

wording that builds these icons as Gabriel places quotes and headlines in a very thoughtful and critical way. Queen Elizabeth II. is one of Gabriel’s masterpieces. Born in 1926, almost unknown up to her coronation, she became Queen at the young age of 25 becoming from one day to another one of the most famous icons of the 20th century. Her coronation ceremony in June 1953 was one of the first global events ever to be televised, covered by international press. Filmed in black and white by the BBC it has been broadcasted worldwide. Millions across the globe watched the coronation live and the ceremony was a major media event of an unprecedented scale.

Lot 30 Park Seung Mo (b. 1969, South Korea) Gandhi, 2014 Stainless Steel Wire Mesh 90.5 x 13.5 x 90.5 cm Signed on reverse Estimate: S$29,000 - S$34,000 Park Seung Mo puts together layers of wire mesh that have been strategically clipped and placed together, illuminated by light to exhibit its transience. Almost as a form of meditation, the artist meticulously cuts layer through layer, with each tiny cut forming an element to the depth that ultimately emerges from the image as a whole. His overarching theme of transience or illusion, thus applies to both his physical composition and process, as well as the ideation that brought it to fruition.

tion and create interest through the ideas he puts forth. Edwin’s works portray conceptual themes with the bold use of colors and interesting compositions.

The vibrancy of his paintings comes from the authentic impulses within and in creating his own order of things. His subjects adorned a simplicity of form, often reduced to their essentials in colour and line, Tanaka’s mixture of cartoon imagery and raw brushwork ignites with energy and stood out in their casualness in a personal way. 23
