November/December | Issue 5 Publisher & Editor Angela Turner Angela@ctckmagazine.com

Dear Reader...

This issue will mark the end of 2015 for Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine, the next time I see you it will be 2016 and I will be wishing you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR! Before we say goodbye to 2015 and ring in the New Year, I want to thank God for guiding me through this process. To all of my family members, contributors, subscribers, advertisers, my social media team, my graphics magazine layout team and most of all my son and my “JBD” ( Joe-Bag-O-Donuts) Thank You for your hard work, your love, and support. 2015 has been a very busy year, and I am so grateful for all of the memories that I have been blessed to experience through this forum, grateful for the new friendships that have been made, and grateful, in advance, for the possibilities that are still yet to come. My vision for Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine is still a work in progress and I am so pleased at the progress that I feel we have made in less than 1 year. Our salon directory is back and looks better than ever, thanks to our new creative team. In this issue, DIY at home—Shiny Hair Mask, Tiara gives us insight on how to buy the best steamer for our curly hair, and Monét talks about the possible causes of dry and unhealthy hair. We cannot forget the holidays, contributor Julie Thomas gives advice on what to pack for your curly hair care needs during your holiday travels or your next vacation get away. Along with Holiday gift ideas for the curly girl or guy in your life. “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting” – Paulo Coelho. Becoming the Publisher of my own magazine has been my dream for over 5 years and I agree with Paulo, life is more interesting! This is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life and there are times that I just want to give up because I am not where I want to be. I then remind myself that I am not where I used to be either—that’s progress. Chase your dreams, find your passion, and even if you fail, remember, you have still succeeded because at least you tried! Carpe Diem my readers!

Ashleigh’s hair care routine

Rocio’s hair care routine

Ashleigh has never chemically altered her curl pattern and her hair type is best described as type 3a – 3b – Curly, spirally, springy hair with an “S” pattern. Her Holy Grail products are “Herbal Essence” mousse, “Herbal Essence” hairspray and a little coconut oil. Ashleigh’s routine is to layer mousse in her wet hair then spray it with hairspray. She then blow dries her hair upside down briefly and goes to bed. She said that her routine of letting her hair dry while sleeping makes her curls fuller and less weighed down.

Rocio has a tighter kinky curl pattern with a hair type of 4a. This hair type is prone to dryness and is very fragile. Rocio has never chemically altered her hair and her “must have” hair care products are “Suave” Soft mousse and coconut oil. When asked to describe her hair routine she said she washes her hair 2 – 3 times a week and she treats her curls to a coconut hot oil treatment, which she says is really important when her hair feels dry. She prefers to finger comb her curls and avoids using a comb whenever possible.

Causes of

Dry Unhealthy Hair by Monét Ravenell

D

ry hair can be a real pain. Not only does dry hair not feel good, but it also doesn’t look good. Hair can appear dull, frizzy and lifeless. Despite what the hair commercials tell you, dry hair isn’t something you’re born with. It’s a very common issue that plagues men and women of all ages. Lack of moisture usually is the number one culprit for dry hair. However, there are some other causes that may not be so obvious. Read on to find out more.

Excessive Heat Styling

Hormone Changes

Summer can really do a doozy on the hair. But if you live in a dry, hot climate all year round, your hair is super vulnerable to nature’s elements. Overexposure to the sun can cause the hair to be chronically dry. Conversely, once winter hits, your hair can become even more dehydrated from overheated rooms. If this is the case, be sure to moisturize often, and incorporate weekly deep conditioning treatments into your regimen.

Birth control pills, pregnancy and even menopause can cause severe physiological changes within the body. These changes can drastically impact the hair, resulting in dryness and brittleness. If you’re experiencing any hormonal shifts, please see your doctor for treatment options.

Curly and natural hair, in particular, can be very fragile. Too much heat lifts the protective layer on the hair. When this happens, pieces of cuticle are removed, resulting in dry, porous hair. If you’ve been addicted to the heat lately, try eliminating it for a few weeks.

The Weather

Harsh Shampoos

Shampoo plays an important part in hair health. But not all shampoos are created equal. Many shampoos contain harsh ingredients like sulfates and alcohols that can literally strip all of the moisture out of the hair. To combat this, try looking for sulfate-free shampoos, and always, always follow up with a thick, moisturizing conditioner.

Overuse of Product

Have you ever heard the expression, “too much of a good thing is a bad thing?” Unfortunately, using too much hair product can affect your hair for the worse, especially if those products have chemicals in them. Whenever you use heavy creams and moisturizers, they can build up on the hair. Over time, that buildup will dry out the hair. To get your hair behaving like new again, use a clarifying shampoo to cut through the buildup. Consider doing a clarifying wash once a month.

Salt/Chlorine Water

Salt from the ocean, as well as chlorine water can wreak havoc on the hair. Salt is a natural drying agent, while, chlorine is full of chemicals. Whenever you plan to take a dip in the pool or ocean, always protect the hair with conditioner or a swim cap. There are even products available, specifically designed to combine salt, chlorine and the sun. Ouidad Sun Shield is an excellent example.

Malnutrition

8  November/December 2015

If you find that you’ve treated your hair the best you can externally, then you may want to investigate internally. Sometimes, when we are deficient in certain vitamins, it can cause severe dryness and breakage. Try to make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet. If you know you have an imperfect diet, at least make sure you take a daily multi-vitamin, and always drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Remember, dry hair is always the result of a bigger issue. We should always strive to take care of ourselves from the inside and out. If we keep the above tips in mind, then we’ll always be blessed with soft and healthy hair. Happy growing.

Q&A MAKE-UP

with Shavonna Finley

Q.

How often should I sanitize my makeup tools to avoid transferring bacteria, and is soap and water good enough? – Sam, GA

A.

Hi Sam! Great question! The proper way to clean and sanitize your brushes is to first use a brush cleaner. Saturate a paper towel with brush cleaner, rub the dirty brush back and forth across the cleaner until all the makeup has come out and the brush is clean. Then, you want to shampoo and condition your brushes with neutralizing shampoo and conditioner to keep the bristles soft and supple. Remove all excess water, then lay flat and let dry overnight. This will keep your brushes in amazing condition! This process should take place once a week. My favorite brush cleaner is either MAC’s or Makeup Forever’s, and the neutralizing shampoo and conditioner I use is by Suave. Also, the best way to sanitize implements such as tweezers and eyelash curlers is to soak them in rubbing alcohol, rinse well and let dry. Happy cleaning!

Q.

I have very oily skin and before I apply my makeup I wash my face with soap to remove the oils. Now that I am getting older, my skin does not seem to be responding as well as it once did. I know that using soap and alcohol based toners will strip my skin of oils, are there any products you can recommend for my oily skin before applying makeup? –Marianne, CT

A.

Hi Marianne! I too am a glowing goddess! My go to products before makeup application are an oil balancing skin care regimen and a mattifying skin primer. My favorite skin care line for oily skin is the Black pore perfecting collection by Boscia. This collection comes with everything you need to keep your skin cleansed, toned, moisturized, protected, and balanced. My favorite primer is “Step 1” skin equalizer mattifying primer by Makeup Forever. All products can be found at Sephora. First, complete your entire skin care regimen then top it off with the primer for a flawless makeup application!

Q.

When I leave my house in the morning, if I have nothing else on my face, I love using my “Lancôme Defenicils Mascara.” Is investing in an eyelash curler a good idea? – Andrea, NJ

Q.

My face has brown spots and is uneven in a few areas. How do you feel about over the counter skin tone creams that claim to even out your skin tone? – Nina, WA

A.

Hi Nina! Over the counter skin tone creams are a hit or miss. They all claim to be the best! I have used many and the two that have given me the best results are “Even Better” clinical dark spot corrector by Clinique, and Ambi “Even & Clear Targeted Mark Minimizer”. For an over the counter product they truly get the job done!

Q.

I have dark circles under my eyes, can you offer me some tips on how to reduce the appearance of those circles without using too much makeup? – Jodi, NJ

A.

Hi Jodi! The best solution for dark circles is moisture and rest! We all have busy lives, and 8 hours of sleep is important, but almost impossible! That is where a great eye cream comes in handy. My favorite eye cream that has shown me the best results is “It’s Potent” eye cream by Benefit Cosmetics. You can find it at Ulta and Sephora—it’s a lifesaver!

A.

Hi Andrea! I love this mascara!!! It is one of the best, and pairing it with an eyelash curler will definitely up the amp of your lashes! My favorite eyelash curler is by MAC Cosmetics. It’s always precise, lasts a long time and will help you achieve even lovelier lashes!

Q&A HAIR

Ask the Expert

with Danielle Green

Q.

I have very long locs and I feel like my hair is starting to thin at the roots. Could the weight of my hair be pulling my hair too much causing the thinning? – Valerie, NY

A.

Yes, weight or not enough weight could be causing traction alopecia. Your loc technician can determine what size loc is best for you based on the strength of your hair and the condition of your scalp. If your hair is already thinning out and a lot of scalp is showing I would recommend a visit with a dermatologist to check your hair follicle health then proceed with a new and creative approach with your locs.

Q.

I have dry hair and I am always looking for a super thick moisturizing conditioner to quench my thirsty curls. I am still looking! Could you recommend any over the counter hair conditioners that my hair could benefit from? – Pamela, PA

A.

Dehydration is a common challenge with curly hair. First I recommend drinking plenty of water daily for internal hydration, and, if you’re not allergic, check into a daily coconut oil supplement. Followed by a topical treatment line like Shea Moisture’s “Super Fruit Complex 10 and 1 Renewal System”. This product is affordable, and works very well for thirsty hair. A Huetiful steamer is a great tool to have a home instant hydration therapy. Over time, the hair will regain its ability to retain moisture and you can change your shampoo and conditioner to a daily moisturizer like “Curl Milk” by Carol’s Daughter or Miss Jessie’s “Leave in Condish”. The holidays are right around the corner, so splurge on your hair!

10  November/December 2015

Q.

I have curly but thin hair, I really want to try some of the recipes from the magazine and from the internet, but most contain oils. Thin hair and oils for me equals flat, greasy looking hair and the thought of putting oils in my hair makes me nervous. I feel like I would have to wash my hair 3 times just to remove any trace of oil, and avoid the greasy hair look. If I tried these oil based recipes, would you recommend using a sulfate shampoo on my thin hair to remove the oil? – Evelyn, CA

A.

Thin curly hair can look greasy if too much of any oil is used, and especially if the oil does not get absorbed by the hair. One of my favorite oils is by Aveda called “Dry Remedy Oil”. This oil absorbs into the hair without leaving any build up, and the aroma is light and does not intrude.

Q.

I have coarse, dull, porous hair, which has been professionally highlighted. I have tried many oils to try and give my hair some shine throughout the day, but my hair drinks up everything I put on it. I keep seeing “Argan Oil” from Morocco on the shelves but I have not tried this oil yet. “Argan Oil” is said to give hair shine and protection, would you recommend this oil or another oil for shine on my coarse, dull hair type? – Bonnie, AZ

Q.

A few of my “CURL” friends tell me I should invest in a satin or silk pillow case to prevent drying and breakage of my curls. Is silk or satin better for curls, than a cotton pillow case? –Brady, TN

A.

Yes! Get a silk scarf, bonnet, or satin pillow case. All of these will not only protect your hair while sleeping but will also keep you hair hydrated and the style in place. Cotton will absorb the moisture from your hair, and can cause dryness and crush your curls in your sleep.

A.

Coarse, dull, porous hair needs a Huetiful steamer! You will love the results of the moist heat. The steamer will deep condition and soften the hair over time, as well as hydrate the scalp. Both the scalp and hair need to be in balance to restore the porosity of your hair. Add the steamer to your wish list for the holidays, and treat yourself to some hair retail therapy.

DIY:

Do it Yourself

Shiny Hair Mask

What You Need:

Recipe:

Bowl—Microwaveable (Preferably Ceramic) 2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil 1 Tablespoon of Honey Peppermint Essential Oil (Optional)

Depending on the length of your hair, feel free to double or triple this recipe to achieve full coverage of all hair strands.

1 2

Comb Disposable Shower Cap or Recycled Plastic Bag

3

Hooded Dryer or Bonnet Dryer (Optional)

4

5

Place coconut oil, honey and peppermint essential oil into your microwaveable bowl. Microwave for about 30 seconds. *CAUTION* Contents are hot, please use care when removing this recipe from the microwave Apply to wet or dry hair, be sure to apply from root to tips. Once you have applied with your hands, to evenly distribute the mask, use a fine tooth or a wide tooth comb.

6

Pin or tie up your hair into a bun and cover with a shower cap or plastic bag for 1 hour or longer if you have the time. If you are able to sit under a hooded dryer or a bonnet dryer, do so. If that is not an option, no worries, the heat that your scalp generates when covered by a plastic cap is sufficient. Shampoo and Condition your hair as usual and you should notice a healthy shine to your strands. Not only will this mask leave your curls shiny, it will also soften your hair. This mask is all natural and can be applied once a week for continued shined and softness.

Spotlight On…

Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas

By Angela Turner I recently had the pleasure of visiting St. Thomas to attend the wedding of my boyfriend’s daughter. This was my second time visiting St. Thomas, and it was even more beautiful than I remembered. I wish our schedules would have allowed for more time, I am grateful to have shared our 30 hours on the ground with my “Mr. Wonderful” and his family. I think that life takes you places, and if you are open to it, you can always meet someone amazing. I am a social butterfly, I manage to meet great people no matter where I am, St. Thomas was no different and it did not disappoint. I had the

Specializing in Destination Weddings. Let us Plan your “Perfect” Wedding! pleasure of meeting Leslie Thomas-Dawson, Owner of Perfect Wedding of St. Thomas and Wedding Consultant for our special trip. At first glance I was amazed at her hair, and the fact that she actually had curls even with all that humidity, compared to my hair, which by this point, was an afro puff void of curl definition. After a few conversations, hearing her story, and a courtesy drive to our final destination, I revealed

myself and asked her if I could feature her in Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine. Leslie seemed shocked, she had never heard of my publication, but she said yes. Leslie moved to St. Thomas, USVI from New York City in 1982 to work for a woman attorney who had aspirations of becoming the first female governor of the territory. As you can imagine, the first woman anything was not a consideration more than 30 years ago. From working as a paralegal and secretary for two law firms on St. Thomas, she was hired to work as an administrative assistant at a Dutch Bank, who managed off shore fortune 500 corporations set up in the USVI for tax purposes.  www.ctckmagazine.com 13

After 18 years of working at ABN AMRO Bank in St. Thomas and rising to the level of Assistant Vice President, the company closed and left the USVI. Leslie started thinking about what she would like to do next? Leslie said that her questions to herself were, “Do I want to continue in the corporate world or do I want to do something more exciting that does not tie me to a desk”? Leslie ended up working for the Marriott Hotel as Manager of the Weddings Department. Fast forward to November 2003, Leslie decided to take the plunge and started her own company—LTDawson Ventures, LLC, d/b/a Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas, a wedding planning business. Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas

14  November/December 2015

provides wedding planning consultation, and coordination for destination wedding brides. Leslie said her most memorable event was planning and coordinating the wedding of their current Attorney General, Lorretta Lynch, in 2007. When asked how she started the business, Leslie said she created her website, designed the wedding packages, wrote the content and went live in November of 2003. She quickly booked her first wedding and the ceremony took place in March 2004. Leslie said what made her decide to start the business was that while working at the Marriott, she saw the demand from brides who wanted to consider off-site venues for their wedding and Marriott was inundated with calls and emails.

Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas, has been going strong for 12 years, the company hit its peak in 2011, when Leslie and her team coordinated 100 weddings. In 2012, the USVI finally felt the effects of the recession that hit in 2009, so in 2012, her wedding portfolio started to decline. When Leslie first started her company, there were only 3 serious players in the industry, so the pie was a lot bigger. Today, there are as many as 10 other wedding consultant companies, and the pricing is a lot more competitive, and because of that, the industry standards have slipped. Leslie’s business model has always been quality over quantity, and she thinks the company is still on the right track. Leslie said that she feels fortunate that after

so many years, Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas, receives a lot of referral service. Perfect Weddings of St. Thomas, has branched out to St. Croix—www.perfectweddingsofstcroix.com (St. Thomas’ Big Sister Island) and business is going well there. Leslie has added a couple of new services to her menu, she is now providing event planning services for all events, not just weddings, as well as an equipment rental business. I asked Leslie, “What is your ultimate vision for the company”? Leslie replied, “At this point, just to maintain and offer services to the discerning bride who wants quality and does not have issues with paying for quality service.” Leslie considers herself an advocate for

her clients. “I take on the stress of planning a wedding for the bride, who is far away from where they live.” If they trust me, when they arrive, all they have to do is put on their dress, I do the rest. Leslie did an amazing job for the wedding I attended, the fact that she is a naturalist was just a bonus. Travel Tips

Traveling Curlies What to Pack for Your Next Trip by Julie Thomas

16  November/December 2015

T

raveling, for most of us, is a time for excitement, fun, and most of all leisure. Whether you’re headed to the islands with your best girlfriends or off on an excursion in the mountains, you’re ready to let your hair down and have the time of your life—all while looking your absolute best for the numerous selfies you’ll upload to social media to capture the moment. So what’s a naturalista to pack for flawless curls on vacation?!

PACK YOUR STAPLES

When packing your hair care necessities for travel, your satin scarf or bonnet should be at the top of the list. As comfy as hotel pillows are, the cotton cases will dry out your curls and ruin your ‘do. Ensuring that you properly care for your curls at night will aid in the longevity of your style during your getaway. Other staples are a clarifying shampoo—to rid your curls of sand or chlorine/ salt water, leave-in conditioner, an oil, and a small water bottle. Instead of checking a separate “product junkie” suitcase complete with full sized products, you can purchase travel-sized containers to fill with your favorite brands to get you pass the TSA checkpoint at the airport if you opt to pack light.

PLAN FOR THE WEATHER

Where you are set to travel and its climate will influence which products you ought to pack. When headed to a destination where the air is hot and humid, be sure to prepare for your style with first deep conditioning your hair. Deep conditioning will retain the moisture in your hair so that it doesn’t look to the environment to fill your hair with more moisture; which will only lead to frizziness and your hair drying out. Bringing along a light oil, such as coconut oil, to seal your ends will also aid in moisture retention.

For temperatures with dry heat, be sure to have a rehydrating spray at bay to add moisture to your hair that may be stripped by the heat and the sun’s rays. Also, swap your gels for a styling cream, as the gel will leave your hair dry and brittle once dried. Instead, pack your favorite cream styler that will keep your curls hydrated. For colder climates, be sure to tuck in your bag a light oil for sealing and a leave-in conditioner to maintain the moisture in your hair and combat dry winter air. You’ll also want to double up on your favorite water-based hair moisturizer to keep your curls well hydrated and shiny.

STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW

When away from home, it is best to stick to hairstyles that you’ve mastered and know you can achieve on the go. Your week of vacationing is probably not the best time to try out those bantu knots you’ve been wanting to try. If twists-outs are your tried and true, try and stick with that. Be sure to pack a little of your favorite hair cream for any necessary nightly re-twisting.

BE PREPARED FOR “PLAN B”

If your twist-out or wash and go fails, be sure to have a couple of “Plan B” items in your arsenal. Pack a few elastic headbands to turn your wash and go into a sleek puff. A small bristle brush and edge control would also be handy for this quick fix. It is also necessary to have plenty of bobby pins on deck. Bobby pins can take your flop of a twist-out to a fierce faux-hawk with a few minutes of tucking and pinning. Other great backups are printed headwraps or a fun Fedora hat. Be sure to keep these tips in mind for your next getaway. When all else fails, embrace the shrinkage, embrace the frizz and enjoy creating lasting memories!

Cooler Weather TRANSITION

INTO …

by Juliette Samuel

M

any of you welcome the cool weather relief that fall and winter bring with it. Unfortunately, cooler weather also means dry, itchy, and irritated skin. Not this year! I know you’ve told yourself you’re going to be one step ahead of Mother Nature. So, I’m going to show you how to do that by giving you a few tips to help keep your beautiful black skin soft, smooth, and supple, not just in the colder months, but all year long.

WHY DRY, ITCHY SKIN IN THE FIRST PLACE?

The lower temperatures, low humidity, and stronger winds that come with cooler weather, combined with the dry air from indoor heating sources like furnaces, dries out not only the air, but also the natural oils in your skin. If your skin tends to be dry or sensitive … well … cooler weather means itchy, rashy, flaky—even cracked skin. Even skin that tends to be oily naturally, can become

18  November/December 2015

itchy during the cooler months of the year. Known as “winter itch” to some, in the medical profession, it’s called asteatosis eczema. Follow these simple black skin care tips and it’s possible that you won’t suffer from winter itch this year.

sure it contains Aloe vera, jojoba, cocoa butter, avocado oil or a combination of them all. If your skin tends to be oily, you can then use a moisturizing soap/cleanser with natural antimicrobial ingredients like chamomile, lavender, tea tree or thyme.

CHANGING YOUR SKIN CARE REGIMEN FOR THE COOLER MONTHS

• Pat yourself dry: When you step out of the shower or tub don’t rub your skin dry this could lead to irritation. Gently pat yourself dry, being gentle with your skin.

When the weather changes, it’s time to give your beautiful black skin care regimen a tune-up. So, here are a few tips you can follow to make sure you work through the cool temperatures and come out in the springtime all soft and supple. • Take shorter showers: Use warm water instead of hot. I know, hot water feels soooo much better, however, hot water can cause your skin to lose moisture. • Avoid using bar soap on your skin: Use a moisturizing body wash instead. Make

• Moisturize: Your skin LOVES moisture. Why deprive it? After bathing or taking a shower, seal the moisture in right away. Use a natural oil or body butter. Make sure it contains Shea butter, coco butter, mango butter, coconut oil and/or olive oil. These ingredients work for your face as well as the rest of your body during cooler months. Stay away from commercial products that contain high levels of alcohol or acid in them. Stick with natural black skin care products. Even if you have oily skin, you’ll

need to moisturize your skin. Just make sure you use moisturizers that won’t clog your pores. Avoid products with mineral oil and other petroleum-based products. Find moisturizers that are especially formulated for black or African American skin. Don’t forget to look for ingredients that have seaweed extract, shea butter or avocado oil. • Exfoliate: Because moisturizers work better at keeping moisture in when applied to fresh skin, you’ll need to exfoliate on a regular basis. Some of you will like skin brushing, others will like body butter scrubs. It’s actually a good idea to use these products on dry skin. It will actually remove the dead skin cells more effectively. However, be ever so gentle with your skin. Too much pressure can cause damage to your skin. If you choose to use a salt scrub, it’s a good idea not to shave the day you exfoliate. Shaving makes small microscopic cuts on your skin and putting salt on freshly shaved skin makes it sting—ouch!

By the way, make sure you take care of your feet during the winter months. This is the best time to keep your feet free of dead skin cell build up. Keep your feet moisturized and sleep in socks if it means keeping them soft. Olive oil makes a great skin softener for your feet. Add a few drops of lavender or peppermint essential oils for freshness, and you’ve got a great oil to use after your bath or shower. • Don’t Get Burned: Even though it’s not as hot outside now that the temperatures have cooled off, you can still get sunburned. You will still need to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun. Wear a sunscreen on all exposed skin (at least SPF 15). This includes your ears and
the back of your necks. Don’t forget your hands! Use a moisturizing butter for your lips. Look for ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butters, rosemary, lavender and jojoba oil just to name a few.

THAT BEING SAID...

Don’t slack on the care you give to your skin during the cooler months. With the wind, rain, snow and ice slicing and dicing your skin as you turn a corner, it’s going to need all the love and care you can give it. Buy products that have quality ingredients. They might cost a bit more, but in the long run the expense will pay off when you see the beauty of your skin. That’s it for this issue. As Always … Dedicated To Your Beauty,

Castor Oil & JBCO A Natural Hair Savior

by Tiara Butler

M

any naturalistas have a love/hate relationship with this vitamin-rich oil. Some swear by it for everything from hair growth to child birth. Others wouldn’t touch it with a 10 ft. pole. If you’ve been straddling the fence on whether or not to add castor oil to your arsenal of natural hair products, let’s talk about some of the ways it can help your curly kinky coils grow.

rescue on those frizz-prone days of curly rebellion. Combine this with castor oil’s anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, and you have an excellent solution for curing dry hair, thinning strands, hair loss, or even itchy and irritated scalp.

The Nitty Gritty About Castor Oil

Here’s where knowledge of your hair’s porosity and density comes into play, but there’s a few general guidelines that benefit all natural heads.

Overall, it’s an amazing addition to your hair treatment—when used properly. Castor oil can be extremely thick and viscous, if you overdo it, or aren’t familiar with the right way to cater to your specific hair porosity and density, you may not be very happy with your results. Castor oil is an age-old natural emollient passed down in kitchen mixin’ traditions for generations. It’s an excellent source of vitamin E, minerals, protein, and Omega fatty acids—all properties that your natural locs really thrive off of. Ricinoleic acid is a pH balancer that encourages the scalp to produce natural oils and bounce back from damage done by over processing. (Great for transitioning naturals.) It’s also a humectant, coming to the

26  November/December 2015

Getting The Most Out of Your Oil

Start With Moisturized Strands: Castor oil is an emollient (a thick oil or butter), it doesn’t add moisture to your hair so you can’t rely on it to reverse dried out curls. It does, however, lock moisture into your strands, sealing it in to work its magic. It’s recommended to use castor oil on hair that is already wet. A Little Goes A Long Way: As I mentioned, castor oil is pretty thick. I’m sure you know this firsthand if your granny ever tried to make you down a spoonful to cure—well anything she could think of. Just like it was a struggle to swallow, castor oil is stick and heavy on your hair. Some get a little anxious when they hear tales of

its healing potential but overdoing it won’t give your hair any additional benefits. Less is more should be the motto. Depending on your hair, you may find it better to only use castor oil in certain sections. If you need help retaining moisture around your edges or at the nape of your neck, massaging some castor oil into your scalp may do the trick. Use It As a Carrier: It’s perfectly fine to mix castor oil with other essential oils, or even other emollients. Lighten up the intensity of a peppermint oil hair rub by diluting the essential with a bit of castor oil. For a hydrating boost, try mixing castor oil with olive oil and fresh herbs. (Fresh rosemary smells heavenly!)

DIY Castor Oil Treatments

There’s no hard and fast rule for how to create a homemade castor oil growth serum. If you’ve been using your own inherited recipe, and it’s been working in your favor, then, by all means, don’t fix what isn’t broken. Here’s a sample of a base recipe to build from. Feel free to add, subtract, or multiply until you come up with the perfect potion for your own kinks.

Ingredients: • 3 Tablespoons Castor Oil • 2 Tablespoons Jojoba Oil • 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil (If you have some rosemary on hand, go ahead and crush it up and add it to the mix.) The Process: You’ll need a clean dropper container (preferably dark in color). Mix all of the ingredients in the bottle and shake until well blended. Part your hair in 4-6 sections and secure with clips or hair bands. Using the dropper, apply a small amount of the mixture directly to your scalp. Smooth it in, then create another part about ½ inch away (depending on thickness) away and repeat. Continue rubbing it in until you’re entire scalp is oiled. Then start massaging. Massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation and increases hair growth. While your hair soaks in the keratin treating oils, your fingers will provide an extra boost. Cover your hair with a heated towel or plastic cap and allow the oil to continue working. Let it sit for about 2-8 hours (most just choose to do this overnight) before washing out. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the castor oil out of your hair. You don’t need to purchase anything special.

Your favorite shampoo and conditioner should do the trick on its own. Only repeat your treatments about once or twice a week. You don’t want to cake too much oil on top of the cuticle before washing. No natural likes the soggy, stringy, greasy, crunchy curl look. Polyunsaturated fatty acids make up about 89% of castor oil. If you’ve been trying to incorporate it in your treatments but only end up with dried out tresses, you’re probably not using it as the sealant it’s meant to be. Remember, moisturize first… castor oil later. The result, lustrous shine (and it’s rumored to help reduce the onset of gray as well…thank me later).

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

If you’ve joined the castor oil bandwagon, it’s likely you’ve stepped into a brand new argument to defend. (As if naturals need something else to debate…) Refined yellow castor oil or JBCO—which one are you rooting for? Each oil starts by being expelled from the castor bean, the primary difference comes up in the method used to process them. Traditional castor oil is cold-pressed straight from the bean. Without using

heat, manufacturers avoid the risk of tampering with the oils healing properties. (This doesn’t mean that every bottle of castor oil is 100% natural, some manufacturers add chemicals during the cold-pressing process.) JBCO is formed from turning up the heat. Manufacturers turn up the heat and fire roast the castor beans. The ashes of the roasted beans are added to the oils, creating its dark color and smoked smell. Color—You’ll obviously be able to tell the difference between the two based on the color of the oils. The lighter the yellow castor oil, the more pure it is. JBCO sports a rich, dark hue. pH-Levels—Processing also altars the pH and consistency of the final product. Adding the ash to JBCO creates a richer, more alkalized oil. Many attribute its higher pH to even more clarifying properties, opening the cuticles so that they may receive even more nutrients. Use it correctly, and you’ll understand why castor oil has received rave reviews in natural hair circles across the globe. Don’t be afraid to spread some across your face and body (ahem, stretch marks) after a nice warm shower. That’s the beauty of using natural products, they take a one-sizefits-all approach to making you look and feel beautiful.

TOP 5 MUST HAVE TOOLS every curly girl needs

by Monét Ravenell

L

iving with curly hair can be, shall we say…challenging. Most curly girls know what it’s like to spend hours crafting the perfect hairstyle, only to go outside, and have the humidity totally ruin it. It’s super frustrating. But even with all of its challenges, curly hair really is a blessing, and the more knowledgeable you become about handling it, the more fun it becomes. Many tools can help aid you in successfully managing your do. Here are the top 5 must have tools that every curly girl needs.

1

Blow Dryer With Diffuser Attachment Some curly girls have a tendency to shy away from blow dryers because they don’t want to expose their fragile tresses to too much heat. But heat is actually not the enemy. Using a high quality blow dryer with a diffuser can actually help you coif your dream curls! Using a diffuser attachment allows you to dry your curls without disturbing the curl pattern. In terms of the type of blow dryer, go for ceramic and tourmaline technology. You’ll be able to avoid frizz, while preventing damage. With successful product application, you shouldn’t have to blow dry your hair anymore than once a week. If you’re still feeling weary about using the blow dryer, be sure to use the cool air function, set on a low to medium setting.

DevaCurl Dryer & Devafuser $200.00

Clarifying Shampoo But doesn’t everyone use shampoo? Yes, but many naturalistas tend to skip the clarifying process. Have you ever noticed that after months of using your favorite product, it seems to lack the same power it once had out of the blue? Your top moisturizers and gels now leave your locks limp and lifeless. You decide the product is crap and, subsequently, go spending even more money on more products. But, if you’d simply been patient enough to clarify your hair, you might have noticed that your hair began behaving properly again from those very same products. What gives? Regular shampoos are great and should be used. However, clarifying shampoos are heavy-duty cleansers that can really cut through all the gunk of the product buildup left on your hair for months and months. So the next time you find your hair misbehaving, reach for the clarifying shampoo.

3

Wide Tooth Comb Every curly girl must have an appropriate wide tooth comb. In order for our hair to stay tangle free, we must comb it. You can do as much finger detangling as you want, but nothing cuts through those knots like a nice wide tooth comb. They’re also much healthier for the hair than rat tooth combs or brushes, which can take out hair by the chunk full. Try to look for plastic combs with rounded tips. Sally’s Jilbere Comb, or Conair Detangle And AntiStatic Combs are excellent choices.

Eden BodyWorks, Jojoba Monoi All Natural Deep Conditioner $8.59

Conair, Anti-Static Detangling Comb $2.99

Deep Conditioner No matter what your hair type is, moisture is absolutely your hair’s best friend. Every curly or naturalista should be using conditioner and moisturizing products on a very regular basis. However, sometimes your curls may require additional reinforcement. If your hair lacks the luster and softness it once had, then it may be time for a major deep treatment. A good deep conditioner will have those curls springing back to normal in no time. Aim to do a 15 to 30 minute deep treatment once or twice a month to start. If your hair is particularly prone to dryness, then increase the process to once a week.

Hair Journal Say what? Here this out. Hair journals are essential on your hair journey. Picture this, you’ve gone out and brought some brand new hair products, you used them and your hair came out picture perfect. You do, what you believe is, the exact same product application process, only to end up with a totally different result. Here’s the deal, many factors can contribute to hair success. Sometimes, slight changes like mixing a certain oil with a certain cream can churn out drastically different results. Whenever you do something new, always take a record of product used, ingredients in the product, and application. You do this often enough, and you’ll start to notice patterns of what does and does not work for your hair. So just remember, although your hair may not always do want you want, there are tools out there to help you. If you use the tools listed, you’ll curls will be turning heads, in a good way, regularly! Either way, through the good hair days and bad, make sure you enjoy your curls no matter what, because no one has hair quite like you. So embrace it!

Should You Be

steaming your kinks? by Tiara Butler

A

re you familiar with the growing craze better known as hair steaming? Some naturals have been swearing by it for quite a while, others have heard about it but haven’t been sold on its benefits, and others are completely outside of the loop altogether. No matter where you fall, by the end of this article, we’ll shed some light on the whole steaming epidemic. We’ll even introduce you to some products that will fit inside your budget.

Why Is Steaming Necessary? We wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s an absolute necessity, but it does create quite the pleasing environment for your hair. Steaming attracts humidity, building up an optimal amount of moisture to help natural hair thrive in dry climates. This is a great practice to add to your routine in the midst of a harsh winter. As we go through the day, our normal activities drain our hair of its natural nutrients, steaming helps replace them with just a short commitment. It increases moisture retention, something that naturals of all hair types and textures can benefit from. So when you’re wondering why that twist out, roller set, or bantu knot gave up after only a few hours, think of how a quick steam could’ve helped that style last a lot longer.

32  November/December 2015

Less frizz and more definition, steaming is likely the secret behind those flawless social media pictures of perfectly coiled women captioned “Day 4 of my twist out!” Before trying steaming for yourself, it’s likely that you’ve been reading those pictures in baffling disbelief. With just a small investment of time and, yes, a bit of money, you too could be turning heads for an entire week of no intervention.

Steaming Concerns Too Much Heat: Some are concerned that the heat of the steamer will affect their natural curl pattern. Fortunately, when done correctly, steamers don’t altar your hair texture. They only enhance and define your strands, boosting your curls and bringing new life to them. In fact, just 30 minutes or less, is more than enough to strength your strands and evolve its elasticity. When your hair is stretched out or manipulated, steamers help it bounce back with no problem. Steamers can help transitioning naturals keep their mane manageable while they become accustomed to its new state. By strengthening your follicles, the line of demarcation won’t be as weak, lessening the amount of hair loss and breakage you endure in the process.

Steaming Out of Season: The humidity from a good steamer can benefit your coils all year long. Even if you’re looking to rejuvenate your locs in the chill of the winter months, you don’t have to worry about the threat of catching a head cold. Longer, thicker, natural hair takes a lot to wash and dry. To achieve that perfect style, sometimes added moisture is vital. Using a steamer, you don’t need to wet or wash your entire head. And, it’ll be dry in no time. Summertime dryness is also an epidemic. Steamers add moisture without causing hygral fatigue. You can get that freshly curled fro look without constantly tugging, tagging, and oiling your hair. Cuticle Care: Steaming isn’t reserved to an aesthetic practice. It proves a number of health benefits as well. Each session opens the cuticles of your hair, presenting you with a prime opportunity to do a nice deep condition or protein treatment at the same time. Open cuticles readily receive the benefits of your products, warm vapors opens up your follicles so your conditioners can really work before they’re rinsed off. All this special treatment offers a bit of hair growth benefits as well. Not specifically due to the steam, but the massaging, moisturizing your scalp is treated to during the process. This encourages the flow of natural scalp oils, setting a healthy foundation for hair to grow on.

Steamers For Every Budget By now, you’re probably intrigued. I have to be honest, some steamers can cost a pretty penny. Don’t be discouraged just yet, there are a few ways to reap the benefits of a good curl steaming, regardless of your budget. There’s something for everyone, so don’t be intimidated. Start wherever your budget allows and grow from there—literally. Longer, healthier strands are just a few sessions away. Soon, you too will be singing the steaming gospel.

$

Gold ‘N Hot Conditioning Heat Cap More of a hood than a handheld or tabletop product, this is one of the most economical steamers you’ll find on the market. It doesn’t provide the same amount of moisture but its portability and easing adjusting makes the Gold ‘N Hot Conditioning Heat Cap a product worth considering. Even with a less intense steaming, you’ll still walk away with a beautiful head of hydrated coils.

Q-Redew Hairstyling Vapor Wand

$$

There’s no possible way to research any form of natural hair steaming without coming across some mention of this steamer. Everyone who’s ever used it sings the highest praises for this product’s ability to treat the cuticles from transitioners to naturals and every head in between. At $70, it’s probably the most effective product you’ll find for under $100. It’s still an investment but, with the amount of product you’ll start saving by increasing your hair’s hydration, the Q-Redew will pay for itself in no time.

$

$$

Secura Hair Steamer Just a small step above the price of the Q-Redew, this steamer is another product to consider. It also doubles as a face steamer, stimulating your pores and leaving you with a fresh glow.

FREE

Huetiful Hair Steamer Considered the big sister of the Q-Redew, this product breaks the $100 price point but, to many, it’s well worth the money.

F to the R to the EE. Can’t go wrong with that right? While it won’t give you the same concentrated impact of more professional products, you can always warm up your conditioner before applying it to your hair. Cover your head with a plastic cap or bag and use your body heat to activate the “steaming” effect. Try being active to raise your body’s temperature faster. You can also run the hot water in your shower and sit in your own make-shift sauna.

facts sheet masks you need to know about

by Rachel H.P.

34  November/December 2015

1. WHAT IS A SHEET MASK?

They are face-shaped sheets soaked in a nutrition-packed solution called serum. The sheet is made up of a variety of materials including paper, fiber, and gel type. These sheet masks are different from facial masks (paste type) that you only need to apply, take off, and pat in extra serum instead of washing the paste after applying and putting on other skincare products. A sheet mask is generally used once and it is individually packaged. This makes them fast, convenient, and easy to use.

2. HOW DO I USE IT?

It’s very easy! Apply it on a clean face, leave on for 20-30 minutes, take it off and enjoy! You can apply it as often as you want throughout the day or week. Sheet masks are great because you can use them even when you’re cleaning, cooking, reading or watching TV. The good thing is that, you don’t have to bother washing it off after applying! The sheets are one-size-fits-all, but since every face is not the same size or shape, it would be easier to start from the forehead and pat it softly as you come down to your face while lining up the holes for your eyes, nose and mouth. You can use sheet masks as many times as you want throughout the day or week, but many recommend using it three times a week or once a day for extra care.

3. WHERE DID IT ORIGINATE?

Sheet masks originated from South Korea, known for their dedication on cosmetics and skin care. Today, these are widely popular in Asia as a whole. Sheet masks are recently changing the beauty industry and gaining popularity in the U.S. by seeing various celebrities utilize sheet masks and post about it on their social media. From the recent conduct by NPD Group in the USA, the sale of masks increased about 60%, overwhelming other categories in the skincare business.

4. HOW DOES IT WORK?

There is a sheet fully soaked with concentrated serum, which consist of many beneficial ingredients to the skin such as hyaluronic acid and vitamins. These ingredients are in water phase as dissolved. The sheet prevents quick evaporation of water phase

and extends the time frame the ingredients require to penetrate deep into the skin. This result in the sheet masks outperforming the effects of the traditional serum-type skincare even when applied once.

9. WHAT MATERIALS ARE THE SHEETS MADE OUT OF?

5. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Non-woven fiber: Inexpensive, difficult mobility, low capacity to deliver serum into the skin

They bring fast effects in regards to enhancing the skin. The serum is filled with various vitamins and minerals, and won’t dry out the skin compared to the paste-type face mask. The sheet on your face helps the serum to soak in your skin a little longer. Some of the sheets also claim to brighten and make your skin firm. Basically, sheet masks are inexpensive compared to going to a spa, convenient, easy to apply, and brings glowing effect on your skin.

6. ARE THERE ANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS FROM USING IT?

Their purpose is to nourish, not exfoliate or cleanse your skin. Sheet masks probably are not as effective for exfoliating or cleaning the skin compared to the pastetype mask. In addition, Serum from low quality products evaporates quickly even before it gets soaked into the deeper layer of your skin.

7. CAN I AFFORD IT? WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

It depends on how willing you are to spend and what kind of quality of sheet mask you want. Individual prices range from $2~$14 depending on the brand and quality. The masks can be found almost anywhere now from your local drugstore, Sephora, or department store.

8. WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE USED?

Diverse types of fabric are used for the sheet masks. Four most used materials from the chronological order they were developed:

Cottons: Inexpensive, difficult mobility, low capacity to deliver serum into the skin (but better than the non-woven fiber) Hydrogel: Little pricey, great absorption system, gel-type consistency, two separate parts (top and bottom) to apply on face, difficult mobility, fits the shape of the face well Bio cellulose: Expensive, all-natural material, adheres to the skin well, better absorption properties, comfortable mobility Orgaid is the only sheet mask manufacturer in USA that uses USDA certified organic ingredients, never engaging in the use of harmful chemicals in order to produce products that is safe to use on your skin. We include fermentation of Lactobacillus which can perform as a natural preservative, and the system was proven for its safety by Ecocert. Orgaid’s mask outperforms the cosmetic effects by including highly concentrated active ingredients, even 100-folds higher, compared to low quality sheet masks. We care about the wellness and health of your skin and want to provide you with healthy ingredients. In addition, we use sheets designed with advanced technology. The sheet fabric is breathable and can comfortably stay on the skin securely while you move around. It also helps ingredients to be absorbed into the deeper layer of your skin compared to other types of fabrics.

Depending on what function the sheet masks want to perform, the serum contains various ingredients that are commonly used, such as aloe and vitamin c, to more unusual ones such as snail extract and seaweed. However, for prevention against bacteria/ fungi contamination, many of them contain chemical preservatives such as parabens and recently phenoxyethanol, which are not good for the skin.

Advice

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? Ask Ninon! Dear Ninon,

My 24 year old daughter just announced she and her boyfriend of 4 years are getting married, but she wants to go off, (just the two of them) to Hawaii and have a small wedding on the beach with only a minister. Her father and I have saved for years to give her the fairy tale wedding she has talked about since she was a young girl. We think it’s her boyfriend pushing her to go in the opposite direction, as he comes from a relatively poor background and he can pay for Hawaii and use it as the honeymoon too. We can’t make them understand that we are wanting to give them both the wedding of a lifetime and pay for the honeymoon as a wedding gift, so they can use his money on a down payment for a house. How do we go about resolving this mess?

– Desperate Mother of the Bride Las Vegas

Dear Mother of the Bride,

You are so lucky to have such a wonderful daughter. It all sounds like a fairy tale from heaven, she has truly fallen in love with her man and the world. Do not condemn her for what she believes in and make it hard for her decision. I don’t believe it has anything to do with money. Believe me, if a woman wants a big wedding and all the family there, she knows she will have it regardless of anyone. You must like the guy, as it has gone on for four years. Trust your daughter and let her have her dream. Maybe later she will decide to have a wedding with all of the family. Keep saving the money for the two of them, for when they need it, and don’t question them for what they need it for when you pass it along. This is all about trust, do not build anything else into it. Trust her as she trusts you, she loves you the world.

– Hugs, Ninon

Dear Ninon,

Many years ago my husband was unfaithful and his mistress had a baby (22 years ago). Now the child is a 21 year old man who insists on telling people my husband is his biological father. Our friends are realizing that this shows my husband was unfaithful to me, and this is hurting me and our two adult children who are 24 and 27 years old. I long forgave my husband for the affair, but now it seems like I am back reliving it every time I hear this man is telling people who is biological father is. It’s putting a strain on my entire family and has shocked my husband who knew nothing of a child being conceived until he turned up on our doorstep! How do we deal with this situation without inflicting any more pain on anyone involved?

– Cheated Wife in Las Vegas

Dear Cheated Wife,

So this is all about you? And maybe it should be. Yes! Your husband did you wrong all those years ago and you forgave him, probably not thinking of the consequences at that time, that this is a human being who has a mother and father like we all do. Most of us like to have contact with our biological parents over time, we call it a connection. This is your time to stand up and be the woman you were when this all happened 22 years ago. There is nothing you can do except take the high road and bring him into your family as a son and to hell with what the family, friends and neighbors think. You and you alone can make this all work, we women have such power. This is your shinning hour and your husband will love you more than ever. Time to save your marriage, and bring the children together; what if this was you in his position?

– Hugs, Ninon

Dear Ninon,

I recently had to have my dog put to sleep after 12 glorious years of his companionship. Everyone is pressing me to get another dog so I won’t be lonely, but honestly I’m not ready to bring another dog into my life, how do I tactfully tell my family and friends to back off ?

– Sad Dog Owner of Las Vegas

Dear Dog Owner,

I understand your situation, I had three Labs and after I put my last baby to sleep I needed a rest and time to grieve my losses. I think your friends are just trying to help and maybe seeing something you don’t see on your face with your grieving. Smile and take a big breath, count to ten and thank them for trying to help. Back On not Back Off and be very honest with your friends and let them know you need some time and you have different things going on in your life for now, and thank you so much for your concern…

– Hugs, Ninon
