Letter from the Publisher

Dear Reader...

This issue marks the 1 year Anniversary of Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine. I want to first thank God for having my back and seeing me through this journey. Thank you to all of my customers, contributors, advertisers, my loving supportive family and friends, Bearly Marketing in California and the gals at Skidmutro in Philadelphia who make the pages come to life. This is a bittersweet time of the year for me because at this very time last year, as I was working hard to get my premier issue out to the masses, my best friend of over 30 years passed away. My bestie, Kelly Peters-Semak, never got to see my premier issue, so I am going to allow myself to be selfish with this Anniversary Issue and dedicate it to her. In the pages that follow you will see my dedication to Kelly, along with a few photographs that I was able to find. On the cover, I am wearing the dress that I wore as her bridesmaid back in 2000, when she married Dr. Vladimir Semak. I have added two new features that I think you will really enjoy; RECOMMENDED READING and IN THE BOX. I’m no Oprah Winfrey, who used to have a book club. This is not a book club, at least not yet, RECOMMENDED READING will feature a book that caters to the needs of people who wear their hair in its natural state or have curly hair. Our feature, IN THE BOX, will feature beauty subscriptions that cater to hair or beauty. Also in this issue, Juliette Samuel has contributed “Top 5 essential oils for natural hair”, Monet Ravenell gives us “The history of the Afro” and Julie Thomas briefly takes us back to the VO5 days with her article titled “Hot oil treatments”. Of course our Q & A experts, Danielle Green and Shavonna Finley have answered your questions about hair and make-up. We have recently updated our website, if you have not had an opportunity to check it out, please take the time to visit the new site and be sure to sign up for special offers and giveaways. I say that because, what you will not see in this issue is the salon directory or the Meet-up directory, they are now available on our website. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy our Anniversary issue, this has been the toughest issue for me to put together and I hope that the final result reflects all of the love and special attention that I put into it. In loving memory of Kelly Peters-Semak – dedicated to you with all my love!

Meet Our Cover Model

Angela Turner

A

s a child growing up in Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York, my grandmother, who lived with us, along with my mother both took care of my hair. I am what is referred to in my culture as “tender headed”. I always hated heat on my hair, I hated getting my curls pressed with a hot comb every Sunday, just to have straight silky hair for the rest of the week.

Eventually, I asked my mother if I could have my hair relaxed and she said yes. In 2004, I started experimenting with hair weaves that lasted for about 5 years. In 2009, I decided I wanted to go natural because I did not enjoy the salon experience, the weaves I were wearing were already curly like my hair and I wanted to rock an afro. I transitioned into the process

for about 4 – 6 months and big chopped for the first time in 2010. My signature style is my “Afro Puff ” (as seen in these photos). I achieve this look by doing a flat twist out. My holy grails: Water, my homemade whipped shea butter, my homemade flax seed gel, coconut oil and castor oil.

Angela’s hair care routine Wash day: I seldom use shampoo anymore, I use all natural apple cider vinegar to remove product.

Step 1. Detangle: I use coconut oil or Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie Step 2. Deep Condition: I use coconut oil or olive oil on my scalp and ends along with Shea Moisture deep treatment mask. I sit under a hooded dryer for about 1 hour.

Step 3. Co-Wash: I co-wash with whatever conditioner I may have, my hair requires thick conditioners. Step 4. Styling: I let my hair air dry and I will either flat twist or roller set my hair and I again sit under the hooded dryer for about an hour. I use a leave in conditioner, whipped Shea butter throughout my strands and seal my ends with castor oil and pure aloe vera gel.  www.ctckmagazine.com 5

Q&A MAKE-UP

Ask the Expert

with Shavonna Finley

Q.

I am not great at applying makeup, but I am looking for a basic understanding of make-up brushes. If there were 5 make up brushes that a person should have in their arsenal, what brushes would you recommend that I buy and why? – Kimberly, Texas

A.

Hi Kimberly! I love this question! The five must have makeup brushes that you need in your arsenal are: 1. Duo fiber foundation brush—With this brush you foundation will be applied flawlessly! The mix of natural & synthetic fibers create a beautiful airbrush effect. 2. Large Fluffy Powder brush—This brush is great for applying pressed or loose powder over foundation or all on its own. 3. Contour/Blush brush—This brush is amazing at applying your perfect cheek color and/or bronzing powder. 4. Eye shadow Blending brush—This brush can be used on all areas of the eye and is perfect for creating any eye shadow look you desire.

Q.

5. Angle brush—This brush doubles as an eyebrow and liquid/gel eyeliner. It will create the perfect brow when used with a pencil, powder, or gel and get your wing eyeliner on point! My favorite brands are MAC, Morphe, and Sigma.

Q.

Eyes are one of the most important features of your face. I am taking baby steps towards eye make-up application and I want to get better at making my eyes POP! There are so many pictures on social media and the women’s eye makeup looks so beautiful. Can you offer eye make-up tips for a beginner like me? – Veronica, Texas

A.

Hi Veronica! The best way at creating POP to the eye is to add a little sparkle! This can be done either in the inner corner of the eye, which will make the eyes appear brighter and more open, as well as on the lid. Using a golden or champagne color will ensure a popping eye combo.

Q.

Clumpy mascara!!! My mascara dries out and forms into clumps. I recently read that you should not pump your mascara wand because you are pumping air into the tube, which causes it to dry out faster. Is there a way to extend the life of mascara when that happens? – Amber, New York

A.

Hi Amber! Unfortunately once mascara has dried out there is not much you can do... To ensure that you get the best usage, look for a formula that has a “clump free” brush and instead of using a pumping motion, use a swiping motion. This will definitely keep your tube from drying out.

Q.

I am looking for ways to better accentuate the shape of my eyes. Are there any makeup tricks that you can offer on how to make your eyes look bigger? – Priscilla, Florida

A.

Hi Priscilla! My favorite trick to help eyes appear bigger is to use white or nude eyeliner on the waterline of you lower lid. This works well with all eye shapes and creates an opening affect that really makes the eyes stand out.

I usually apply concealer under my eyes to conceal my under eye bags. Is there a better way to disguise under eye bags? –Corrine, California

A.

Hi Corrine! A lot of the time bags are under the eyes are hereditary. In this instance, we just have to love them and leave it alone. If not, and you’ve just developed under eye bags due to stress or lack of sleep, then moisture is key. Using an extremely moisturizing eye cream that has an ingredient such as caffeine in it will work wonders along with your concealer. I suggest fast response eye cream from MAC Cosmetics.

Q&A HAIR

Ask the Expert

with Danielle Green

Q.

I am trying to eliminate shampoo from my routine and I recently read an article about sea salt. Sea salt can be used as a natural exfoliate for the scalp and the nutritional benefits to the hair follicles, which is said to make hair softer. Would you recommend a conditioner/ sea salt scrub to cleanse the scalp for curly hair? – Ophelia, NJ

A.

Great question Ophelia! I’ve never heard of sea salt being used as an exfoliation for the scalp. My only concern is the source of the sea salt. Sounds like trial and error will come in to play by combining it with a mild sulphate free shampoo to get the salts to mix and rinse well. Good luck and let us know how it works for you!

Q.

My hair type is probably 3B/3C. I don’t feel comfortable going outside with wet hair and time management is not one of my strengths. What is your recommendation about air drying your curly hair and the benefits? –Michelle, WA

A.

Hi Michelle! I recommend that you purchase a professional hooded dryer and that will solve the problem during cold climates and should only add 10-20 minutes to your routine. When traveling use a hair dryer with a diffuser on medium heat and switch to cold air during the drying. Some of the benefits of air drying naturally are less frizz, defined elongated curls and moisture is sealed in slowly.

8 March/April 2016 Anniversary Issue

Q.

I love all the DIY recipes in Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks magazine and on the Internet. I am on a budget and sometimes, when I am at the market, it just seems easier to pick up a bottle of shampoo and conditioner off the shelf and call it a day! I have coarse, tightly coiled hair which requires super thick conditioners. I have not been able to find one that gives me what my hair needs. For the curly chick on a budget, like me, what curly hair thick conditioner products from the grocery store would you recommend? – Gretchen, DE

A.

Hey Gretchen, I hear ya! The best over-the-counter shampoos and conditioners are easy to find at Sally’s beauty supply and Ulta Cosmetics. Sally’s carries professional products and some big name brands that have been duplicated to “act like” the higher end originals. If you don’t have a Sally’s or Ulta near you then ordering online is another option. A few of my favorite affordable original name brands are Mixed Chicks, Shea Moisture, As I Am, Kinky Curly, and Yes to Carrots.

Q.

A stylist once told me, “NEVER WASH MY CURLY HAIR WITH HOT WATER”! Is it true that cold water makes your hair less frizzy and shinier? – Raven, PA

Q.

I don’t feel like my hair is clean without using shampoo or seeing suds. Is it possible to over wash curly hair? My girlfriend told me that my hair looks dry because I over wash my hair with products that are too harsh for my fine curly hair. – Ella, NY

A.

Hello Ella! Yes you can dry out your hair by overly shampooing. If you have fine curly hair then I understand why you may want to cleanse daily. But, using a conditioning cleanser on your midlengths to ends like RE.STORE by Kevin Murphy will keep your curls hydrated and a sulfate free shampoo on the scalp should help keep your scalp clean and oil free. I hope this helps!

A.

Raven, brrrrrrr! If you can back off of the heat during your finally rinse that will help seal your hair without freezing your buns off in the shower. Remember to use a leave-in conditioner to help with naturally frizzy hair and try to dry the hair with a cool setting. Good luck!

The Top 5 Essential Oils for Natural Hair Care Your Hair Will Thank You for It. Written by Juliette Samuel There are many issues we face that contribute to unhealthy hair and hair loss. It can come from the products we use, it may happen due to our lifestyle choices, or it might just be a genetic trait. Our hair needs as much support as it can get. By using an essential oil for hair growth, it helps by taking on the task of keeping your hair healthy by protecting it. Furthermore, it makes your hair strong and promotes growth. Essential oils smell wonderful and have many therapeutic qualities. Each of them are naturally extracted and contain no chemicals. A carrier oil needs to be combined with essentials due to their strong properties to help carry and transfer the important oil through your hair and scalp, while adding even more benefits. Here are 5 essential oils that are known to help your hair grow long and strong.

16 March/April 2016 Anniversary Issue

1 Peppermint Oil

2 Rosemary Oil

3 Clary Sage Oil

4 Lavender Oil

This very popular oil is found in many different products, from breath fresheners to bath products. Its common use is due largely to the fact that it is a favorite for health and beauty experts that enjoy the proven effects of peppermint. Peppermint as an essential oil will balance the pH levels in your hair to get rid of germs without taking away from the natural levels that are important for healthy, balanced hair. Vitamin C is found in peppermint oil and it is a very necessary supplement for growth support. This oil will also soften your hair, making it easier to wear in creative styles.

Clary Sage is not the same as the Sage we most commonly know of, however the two are closely related. Historically nicknamed “Clear Eyes,” Clary Sage actually is good for eye care, along with aiding in digestion, and working well as an oil for aromatherapy. Women tend to find that Clary Sage can put them in a better mood and lessen the physical pains that come with many of the changes the female body has to go through. Clary Sage works wonderfully to halt hair loss and is a great choice for curly hair textures. It works to help eliminate dandruff and has antibacterial components. Clary Sage also has the added benefit of limiting sebum (oil) production in your scalp, which tends to cause excess oil and contribute to a greasy look. The aroma creates a mentally soothing and calming effect, and massaging the oil into your scalp makes hair grow more quickly.

5 Chamomile Oil

There are two types of chamomile, one being Roman and the other being German. While it can be hard to set apart the two because of their similar uses and properties, there are some variations. German chamomile is a bit more potent than the Roman type. Roman chamomile is better known for its relaxing qualities as German chamomile is more recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile does a superior job of fighting off infection and removing toxins from the body to enable better functioning, and these benefits are just as important for your hair. This essential oil also has a distinctive cosmetic benefit. It enhances natural hair color to make it more noticeable and brings out natural highlights for a more vibrant appearance.

Rosemary is an essential oil that mixes very well with an olive oil carrier. These two oils not only work together, they also have an awful lot in common. Cooks tend to use rosemary and olive oil in restaurants and at home. Along with cooking, the oils have many positive effects on your hair. The essential oil of Rosemary will leave hair strong as it keeps moisture contained and with a nice natural sheen. It wakes up the hair follicles, causing growth at an accelerated rate. Just like your skin, the pores of your scalp need to be opened up for proper functioning, and Rosemary does just that. Add Rosemary to shampoo for an invigorating aroma and a healthy dose of oil that works well with every hair type, from tightly coiled to loose and wavy.

Lavender is the scent that is recognized worldwide and it is a favorite amongst the ladies. The scent can easily be found in lotions, bubble baths, perfume, and candles. What’s especially interesting is that while this oil can stop hair loss, studies have shown that it can also help to relieve some of the mental anxieties that cause loss, such as stress and depression. Though it may seem to be just for the ladies, it might be the perfect oil that helps men to combat baldness. Lavender has been known to help with some cases of Alopecia Areata, a disease that causes the body to reject hair follicles and stop them from growing. In turn, the hair that was already there will fall out and shed excessively. Because it is an anti-inflammatory, those who suffer from the irritation of an itchy scalp can find comfort in Lavender oil. Adding this essential to a conditioner can easily turn it to a super-conditioner that’s able to moisturize and heal.

Great Results... These essential oils are refreshing for both the hair and the senses due to their beneficial properties that are good for the scalp, hair follicles and many other areas of the body. Many of you will often experience great results from using them. Give an essential oil for hair growth a try, and you are sure to love the results. As always... Dedicated to Your Beauty, Juliette Samuel Aesthetician/Author/Aromatherapist/Publisher www.ctckmagazine.com 17

THE HISTORY

afro

BY MONÉT RAVENELL

OF the

atural hair is ever evolving. The great thing about natural hair is that it’s so versatile. It can be worn bone straight, or curly and wild. Depending on the texture of your hair, a really fun way to wear natural hair is an afro. In fact, it’s so popular that it has become a notable fixture in pop culture. If you ask someone what an afro is, regardless of race, they can easily describe it. However, many people don’t know much about its origins. The afro has a long, rich history, particularly in the black hair community. Most people believe afros originated in the 1960s. But what many don’t realize is the afro’s roots can be traced as far back as the 1700’s. There were a group of women living in North America,

18 March/April 2016 Anniversary Issue

known as the Circassians, who donned afros regularly. They were known for the beauty and their dark curly hair, which they would tease out into the shape of an afro. This look can be seen in many beauty advertisements in the mid-1800s. In fact, this look was in so demand that P.T. Barnum, founder of Barnum and Bailey Circus, would often showcase these women as sideshow acts. Circassians, who were of European decent, would ultimately disappear due to the European slave trade. So Barnum began to substitute light skin Black women, with teased hair, in their place.

“Today, the afro is more popular than ever. The popularity of the afro began to shift during slavery. Africans were forced to assimilate, thereby being stripped of their culture. As a result, they had to style their hair in a way that was suitable to their masters. It wouldn’t be until the Civil Rights movement, of the 1960s and 1970s, that the afro would make a comeback. Blacks became liberated, and donned afros as political statements, reclaiming their power. During this period, Blacks sought to redefine aesthetics. Black is beautiful was an important mantra. And the afro became a symbol of Black pride. To some extent, the afro became associated with militant extremism. The afro then became nothing more than a passing fad. By the late 70s, the afro would be replaced by the Jheri curl, a curly relaxer. The chemical was used to smooth afro hair into loose curls. In the 1980s, perms were all the rage. Many women relied heavily on chemicals to straighten their hair. Relaxers continued to remain popular until about the 1990s, when natural hair began its booming comeback. The afro has gone on somewhat of a cultural rollercoaster. Today, the afro is more popular than ever. Many no longer see the afro as a political statement, but rather a low maintenance style that is worn out of convenience. However, others understand that the cultural and social significance of afro hair is not to be underestimated. No matter what new hair technology is invented, the afro continues to be a mainstay in the Black hair community. It has permanently expanded prevailing images of beauty and will certainly be around for many more years to come.

hot OIL

TREATMENTS by Julie Thomas

W

hen you think of a hot oil treatment, you may reflect back to the small plastic bottle of Alberto VO5. I remember getting the treatment about every month or so as a child. I loved the smell and how the warm, silky oil felt on my scalp. Those were the days where I actually looked forward to wash day. However, hot oil treatments are definitely not a thing of the past and should be incorporated as a part of your hair care regimen today. With all of the wear and tear we place on our hair through styling and with seasonal temperature changes, our hair can greatly benefit from a little tender loving care that a hot oil treatment provides. The great thing about the treatment is that all hair types, from thick to fine and curly to kinky, can reap the wondrous benefits.

TAMES FRIZZ

RESTORES MOISTURE

ADDS SHINE

The hot oil will infuse your hair strands and restore the moisture balance within your hair. With the correct moisture balance, your hair will gain more elasticity, which will result in length retention. Hooray for healthy hair growth!

An added bonus to your hot oil treatment is that after application, your tresses will be left with a lustrous shine.

CONDITIONS DRY SCALP If you suffer from a dry, itchy scalp and dandruff, a hot oil treatment will nourish your scalp like a silk glove keeping the flakes at bay.

PREVENTS SPLIT ENDS/BREAKAGE No one likes dry hair; especially dry hair that is prone to breakage. A hot oil treatment will help nurse your dry, brittle strands back to optimum health. Applying hot oils to your hair will smooth the cuticle, also reducing the appearance of current split ends.

The heat from the oil opens the cuticle of the hair, which allows moisture to penetrate down the hair shaft - ultimately taming frizz. Again, hot oil treatments are beneficial for all hair types, therefore it tames frizz on fine hair also, without weighing it down.

SOFTENS HAIR After you’ve applied your hot oil treatment and continued with your normal styling process, you’ll be left with noticeably softer hair that is full of body and bounce.

There are plenty of pre-packaged hot oil treatments on the market, however you can also take the DIY approach and create your own tailored to your specific hair needs. Here are a few oils and their known benefits: Coconut Oil – Prevents damage, restores moisture and strengthens hair Almond Oil – Reduces shedding and locks in moisture Jojoba Oil – Promotes healthy hair growth Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Combats hair loss and reduces dandruff Argan Oil – Hydrates and adds elasticity to dry hair Avocado Oil – Improves the strength of hair and boosts shine Tip: When treating your hair to a hot oil treatment, be sure to test the temperature of the oil before applying it to your hair and scalp. The oil should not be scalding hot, but rather warm to hot in temperature. You can test the oil on your wrist; if it is too hot let it cool slightly.

Naturally coily or coarse hair is typed as 4 (Kinky/Coily/ Coarse). Some of the characteristics of coarse hair is that it is fragile, prone to breakage and can be very dry as it does not retain moisture easily. Type 4 hair can range in thickness from fine to coarse and does not have as many cuticle layers as other hair types. Due to the tight curl pattern, natural oils that our hair produces has a difficult time traveling down the hair shaft which causes the dryness and lack of moisture. It is important that you keep your hair properly moisturized and that you treat your hair properly. There are a few ingredients on the market that work best for “type 4” curlies. You can purchase these ingredients in the raw form or look for them in products on the shelves.

 HYDROLYZED PROTEIN Our hair consists of 91% hard protein also known as keratin, which is responsible for the strength and structure of the hair strand. Keeping your hair strong, while at the same time maintaining moisture can be a tough balance. We all know that too much protein can make your hair hard and brittle. Wheat protein is considered a gentle protein, often labeled as hydrolyzed keratin or hydrolyzed wheat protein. Hydrolyzed is defined as the chemical compound that has been split into smaller units through the process of hydrolysis. Derived from soft wheat, hydrolyzed protein coats and penetrate damaged cuticle layers, nourishing and strengthening your hair from within. It is an essential part of your hair treatment that increases your hair’s ability to maintain and receive moisture. Proper treatment of your cuticles results in healthier, shinier and fuller hair.  COCONUT OIL Coconut oil is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals all of which are good for the human body. Coconut oil has been used as a hair oil for many years, and it has shown remarkable results. Because of some of Coconut Oils components it is said to keep the hair strong, nourished and protected from the effects of baldness and excessive hair loss. As it relates to moisture retention in Type 4 hair, Coconut oil has a high moisture retaining capacity, because it is not easily broken down or evaporated. Coconut Oil does not let moisture escape, keeping hair moist and soft, which prevents breakage of hair. Coconut Oil can be found at Trader Joes or Whole Foods Markets.

 RAW SHEA BUTTER Derived from the African shea nut, shea butter

is rich in Vitamin A and E it adds moisture to dry, brittle, dull, lifeless hair. Shea butter hydrates, softens, conditions and overall beautifies our hair. Raw unrefined Shea butter contains natural properties, refined Shea butter does not. It is recommended that you only use yellow raw, unrefined Shea butter on my hair and skin. For curly hair application it is often whipped and blended with organic oils. Shea butter can be used as a sealant for all hair types to protect coarse hair from dryness and breakage. Products on the market that you can purchase are endless, one you can try is Shea Moisture brand Raw Shea Butter with Frankincense & Myrrh.

 BENTONITE CLAY Bentonite clay is composed of ash made from

volcanos. The largest known source of bentonite clay is found in Fort Benton, Wyoming where numerous volcanos are present, so the name of the clay stems from the town where today much of the supply is still harvested. The other name that bentonite clay is typically given, Montmorillonite clay, stems from the region of France called Montmorillon, where the clay was first discovered. Bentonite clay or mud is highly absorbent and will help clarify your hair without making it feel dry or stripped of moisture. Hair is clarified by attracting and binding impurities and dirt in hair, leaving your hair very moisturized. Brand to try is Aztec Bentonite Clay.

 CASTOR OIL Latin for “beaver” made from the perineal glands of the beaver. Castor oil has one of the highest proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Castor Oil, locks in hair moisture and cannot penetrate the hair follicle. Instead Castor Oil attaches to the top layer of your strands which prevents moisture from escaping. Castor Oil is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the environment creating additional moisture for your hair. You can purchase Castor Oil at most health care stores and organic supermarkets. www.ctckmagazine.com 31

t was always my intention to incorporate books in every issue of Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine. If you haven’t read my bio, please visit our website at www.CTCKMagazine.com, if you have read my bio, then you know my story and why I decided to transition from relaxed hair to my natural texture. In my bio, I mention that books were relatively easy to find, but magazines that cater specifically to the needs of naturally curly/textured hair, were not available. For our first recommended reading, I have chosen Curly Girl: The Handbook, written by Lorraine Massey with Michele Bender. Lorraine Massey is the founder and co-owner of Devachan salons and the co-creator of DevaCurl products. Lorraine also gives seminars on her methods to stylists throughout the country. Curly Girl: The Handbook, is sometimes referred to as “the curly girl manifesto,” a how to and a support group all in one. CGH has been expanded since its original published date of December 2010 and now includes a step by step DVD with cleanse, trim and style directions. This book is chock full of information for anyone with curly hair. Some of the chapters covered in CGH are homemade recipes, a twelve-step recovery program for curly girls, identifying your curl type, guys “n” curls, updo’s for special occasions and so much more. CGH is 188 pages and can be purchased for $14.95 or less. I have read a lot of curly hair books and what I like about this book is that it is specific to all textures, genders, and ethnicities, which is why I choose Curly Girl: The Handbook as recommended reading. I will be giving away a free copy of this book in the coming weeks, so be sure to visit our website and sign up for announcements so that you can enter to win your free issue.

Advice

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? Ask Ninon! Dear Ninon,

I’m 17 years old and my Mom snoops in my bedroom when I’m not home and she goes onto my phone account online to read all my text messages. I have nothing to hide but would just like some privacy and respect as I am turning 18 soon. How do I ask or tell my Mom to please stop snooping around my room and looking at my phone activity?

rolls of carpet lying rolled up in the guest room, again she bought them on clearance and thought they were a bargain. When I bring it up to her that we will go into bankruptcy she cries and promises to stop but never does. I feel our marriage is failing fast because of all the financial strain her shopping is putting on us. My wife doesn’t work outside of the home, so I’m the only one bringing in money and we have 3 daughters under the age of 12 too. Please help me, you are my last resort.

have company it is awful) because you have to shout to one another over the noise of the yapping dogs. Apart from the dogs the neighbors are great, their front yard is well kept, they themselves are quiet people, but if they are not home they don’t hear their dogs the way we do and when we tried talking to them they took offense and said we have to be making it up as their dogs don’t bark.

– Invaded Teenager, Las Vegas Dear Invaded Teenager,

So what are you hiding from Mum?? Your mother’s instincts are right on, the mother hen keeps an eye on all her children and knows when something is not in the correct order. This is why you love her. She is trying to protect you from something that she knows is going on. Believe me she has better things to do than snoop around in your room and on your phone. This is and will be the only person on your side 100%. Be thankful for her caring and cough it up and tell her the real story. I was 17 going on 25 and needed no one! That was a lie. Thank her for caring about you, for that is all she is doing. Mother hen protecting her chicks…

– Going Broke, Las Vegas Dear Maxed-Out Money,

So you have no control over your wife and she controls you which you like? Since she is a compulsive shopper and gets such bargains she could re-sell them at a profit on Amazon or E-Bay and start a business of her own at home. This way she can still buy all these bargains and then have her own money coming in to go out and buy more. All you have to do now is convince her that it was her idea to start her own business. Did I hear you say you could retire with all the money she is making? Don’t even think about it…

– Hugs, Ninon Dear Ninon,

My wife is a shopping maniac! She gets credit cards that she doesn’t tell me about, then I’m left trying to juggle the bills to pay everything off. She will buy 4 ceiling fans for example because they were on sale and she thinks they were a bargain. We have

Dear Ninon,

Our neighbors have two dogs they leave outside a lot when they are not home and these dogs just yap from morning till night. We can hear them inside our house, and sitting in our back yard, (especially if we

Dear Miss Tranquility,

It sounds like you are both good friends and want to keep it that way. There are laws about disturbance in the neighborhood. If it is really that bad you can call the police and they will take care of it for you, as soon as they arrive the dogs will start their symphony. I believe you don’t have to give your name, better still get the neighbor on the other side to do the complaining, it is just as bad for them as you.

– Hugs, Ninon Dear Ninon,

Recently an old friend of mine came to stay, we had lost touch for many years then she found me on Facebook. It was great seeing her and catching up, but she kept walking around my house in just shorts and a sports bra in front of my husband and my two teenage sons. She has had breast enlargements done and I found the whole act upsetting and insulting. My husband says he barely noticed her doing this—ha!

ha! With 38DD breasts, you couldn’t help but notice her. My son’s friends came over in abundance in the evenings just to stare at her (they are 15 and 16 years old). I asked her not to dress like this around my husband and sons, but she laughed and said after spending $8,000 on her boobies she wanted to show them off. I’m not sure where our new friendship stands now, I was just glad when she left but feel sad that after all the lost years, she is still the great woman I knew, except for the breasts and displaying them so openly to my family. What can I do not to lose her friendship again, but make her understand she can’t parade around my house like that ever again?

– Not a Breast Fan, Las Vegas Dear Breast Ahoy,

The price we pay for friendship? Now, is she really a friend or not? Have you not thought about what you asked of her and what she said back to you? Think about this very clearly for your own self being, waking up every day thinking about her boobs exposed in YOUR HOUSE all day and driving you nuts? Is she more important than your family and your values? Her intentions are to get people to look at her, this is why she had this done otherwise she would not have had a breast enlargement. Next time she wants to stay with you, you could say you will be out of town and after that you can always think of another excuse. This way you can still be friends. Well maybe, your call.
