Letter from the Publisher

Dear Reader...

If you are reading this, than you, like me, have so much to be grateful and thankful for. The New Year is when most of us make promises to ourselves or to others and then we work hard to keep those promises. They call them New Year resolutions! Personally, I don’t practice this annual ritual and have not for many years, it generally led to disappointment in myself. I try to wake up every day and strive to accomplish completing a few tasks or reaching milestones. I find these resolves to be more rewarding. You know the phrase “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Progression comes from small actions every day. Resolutions can make life overwhelming and some people don’t know how to start. Who wants to start the New Year feeling overwhelmed, frustrated and pressured? I know I don’t, but do what works best for you. Make your resolutions or try approaching the New Year differently. Try breaking down your next 365 days into manageable “bite size” chunks. I promise you, it works! Since we are on the subject of “bite size”—How do you feel about marshmallows? Well, have I got a recipe for you!! In this issue, I recreated a marshmallow recipe for your hair. This issues DIY recipe is a Marshmallow Root leave-in-conditioner. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so I want you to meet Mitch & Angela and read their story titled “Love and Natural Hair.” Juliette Samuel gives us tips for winter hair in her article “How to get natural hair ready for winter.” Monet Ravenell is back with two articles, “7 Tips for maximum moisture” and “5 benefits of wearing protective styles in the winter months.” Contributors Shavonna Finley and Danielle Green have answered all of your questions about make-up and hair. In closing, Steve Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” Welcome to 2016—when looking back on 2015 think of what worked well for you. Think about the people who genuinely had your best interest at heart and things or people who served you or were a disservice to you. If necessary, “One bite at a time,” eliminate what is toxic or does not benefit you, hold close and feed what enriches your life and connect your dots! Happy New Year & Happy Valentine’s Day!! Carpe Diem my readers!

Q&A MAKE-UP

with Shavonna Finley

Q.

I have been using the same pressed powder and concealer forever. They say you should change your shampoo and conditioner periodically so that it continues to be effective. Does the same hold true for makeup? Should I change my makeup product line, and if so, how often? –Chrystal, South Carolina

A.

Hi Dana! I love a lined waterline (inner rim)! Almost all eyeliners are safe for the waterline unless they have some sort of particle in them such as metallic shavings or glitter. If these particles get in the eye they can cause some major irritation, so only use this type of eyeliner on the top. To be on the safe side, always ask the beauty professional you are purchasing from if the eyeliner is approved for the waterline and keep on lining!

your primers and pressed powders will be able to perform as they should without being overpowered by oils. The best skin care lines to balance moisture in oily skin types is the pore purifying line by Boscia and the Checks and Balances line by Origins. Both can be found at Sephora and will balance you out to perfection!

Q&A - Shavonna

A.

Hi Chrystal! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! If you have been using the same makeup line for years, and you still love it, keep using it. The only reason to change would be if the products stopped working effectively for your skin. Then I would explore other options. If that’s not the case, keep on pressing on!

Q.

Needs design

I love eyeliner, sometimes I use it on my upper lid, and sometimes I will line my inner rim. I was recently told by a friend that it is not safe to line your inner eye, is there any truth to that? –Dana, New Jersey

Q.

I tend to have very oily skin and it gets worse throughout the day. I have tried pressed powders and primers and I still get oily, do you have any suggestions? – Rosa, New Jersey

A.

Hi Rosa! Great question! I too have very oily skin, and over the years I have learned that skin care is where it starts! When your skin care regimen is on point, all of your other products will perform better. Moisture balance is very important, especially with oily skin. We think because we have oily skin there is no need to moisturize, but in truth moisture is the key to fighting oiliness. Once the moisture in your skin gets balanced

Q.

I have very thin lips and love the look of a fuller pout, can you tell me how I can achieve the look of fuller lips, without too much product? –Cassandra, Rhode Island

Q.

I love the nude lipstick look, but my lips are very pigmented—any suggestions on products that will work best for pigmented lips and achieving the nude lip look? – Angela, Las Vegas

A.

Hi Angela I love a nude lip! There are three key products you need to create this look on pigmented lips. A lip primer, lip liner, and a matte lipstick. First set your lips with lip primer to ensure opacity and staying power. Then lip your entire lip with lip liner to even out/erase the pigmentation on your lips. Then top it off with the matte lipstick. You can always add a gloss if you are not into the matte look. My favorite nude lip combination is Prep & Prime lip primer, Cork lip liner and Velvet Teddy matte lipstick, all from MAC Cosmetics. These products will help you achieve that amazing nude lip you desire.

A.

Hi Cassandra! Great question! The key to a fuller pout is an amazing lip liner and a lip plumping gloss. The best way to achieve the look is to completely fill in your lips with the liner, then over draw your lips in the areas that you need it, just enough to where they look fuller but still natural. The best products to use are Prolongwear lip pencil and Plushglass lip gloss all from MAC Cosmetics. They will give you staying power, moisture, and the plumper pout you desire.

Q&A HAIR

with Danielle Green

Q.

Q.

A.

A.

I am a newbie to the nauralista world, I am accustomed to getting a razor cut and was told I should now steer clear of a razor cuts because they can lead to split ends and frizz, is that true? – Caponia, NY

Hi Caponia, one of the reasons why we razor cut is to create texture in the hair. However, razor cutting natural hair is not recommended in my salon because natural hair already has a texture that is unique. A razor cut does not create split ends or frizz but a dull razor will! Find out what kind of razor cutting education your stylists has had over a consultation before you book your next razor cut for natural hair. Good luck!

Q.

I love your hair Danielle, it is so beautiful. My hair is not as long as yours, but it is very full like yours. Can you tell me the proper way to detangle textured hair? – Lorraine, Texas

A.

Hi Lorraine, thank you for the compliment! If your hair is similar to mine, then it deflates when its wet and can be detangled in the shower with deep conditioner and a round shampoo brush, wide tooth comb, or you can get a wet brush for the same effect. Some curly girls may need to finger detangle first before getting the hair wet and section into quadrants for control before the shower.

I live in upstate New York, right now we are in the fall season and I recently decided to try to transition to cone free products. My hair is not feeling it at all, or maybe it’s me. Any suggestions? – Sophia, NY

Hi Sophia, it will take a while for your hair to be cone-free. The coating has already built up on your strands and overtime it will wear off. Using a detoxing/clarifying shampoo will help to remove it gently followed by a deep conditioner. In the meantime, try steaming your hair once per week. If you don’t have a steamer, then try sitting in the steam room at your gym for about 20 minutes per week. Your hair will love you for the treatment and so will your skin!

Q.

I know that less fussing with my hair equals less frizz when it comes to our curls. I love playing with my curly hair and have to remind myself to stop. If I am going from work to play or meeting, is there something you can recommend for my ends to reclump my curls? – Monique, CA

A.

Hi Monique, yes! Re-mist the hair to re-activate your existing product and then start fussing with your hair again and have fun with creating new curl patterns and textures! I love doing this technique to my hair to change up my look during the day, especially when my hair starts looking dusty.

Q.

I love to brush my hair, it is one of the things I miss doing now that I have gone natural. I know that it is okay to brush my hair when it is wet, is it ever okay to brush it dry so that I can really stimulate my scalp? –Lilly J., CA

A.

Hi Lilly, brushing the hair is not only therapeutic, but also stimulates the follicle and allows the natural oils from the acid mantle to make its way down the hair shaft. I would recommend that your hair is completely detangled and hydrated with a light oil of choice before brushing to prevent any unnecessary stress on the strands.

Benefits of Wearing Protective Styles In Winter Months by Monet Ravenell

The winter season can really do a number on our hair. The outdoor elements can not only cause breakage, but also seriously dry out the strands. Thankfully, there is something you can do that will help get you through the winter months with ease. It’s called protective styling. Many naturals enjoy wearing protective styling, not only in the winter season, but all year long. There are many benefits to wearing protective styles. Read on to learn about five of them.

1. KEEPS HAIR SOFT Cold weather can really dry out natural hair. A great way to prevent winter dryness is by slicking your hair back into a bun, and tucking the ends, so that they are not exposed to the wind. What you’ll notice is that at the end of the day, your ends are nice and soft. And as any naturalista knows, a well-moisturized mane is the key to successful hair growth. If your hair seriously lacks moisture, then consider wearing protecting styles for a week or two.

2. RETAINS GROWTH During the winter, the hair often snags on textured fabric. When the hair regularly latches on to fabric, the ends can break. Obviously, if your ends are breaking, then it can be nearly impossible for you to experience any real hair growth. A great preventative measure is wearing protective styling. The more you wear your hair up, the less chances there are of your hair breaking off.

3. QUICK AND EASY If you’re someone who doesn’t have a lot of time in the morning, then utilizing protective styling is a really great solution. The less time you spend on your hair, the more time you can invest into other areas in your life. Braid outs and twists outs, for instance, require very little maintenance, other than the occasional touch up or daily moisturizing spritz.

4. LOW MAINTENANCE The less you manipulate curly hair, the more it will thrive. Piling hair on top of your hair when shampooing; tugging at your hair when combing; constant blow-drying are all things that don’t do your hair any favors. Curly hair can be extremely fragile. So manipulating the hair daily only adds to the stress. When you wear protective styling, it prevents the “hand in hair” syndrome that many of us can fall victim to.

5.VERSATILE Many people have negative views in their mind about protective styles because they think that they’re boring and not versatile. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. You can do a lot of creative styles. All it takes is a bit of time and a little research. Try searching for “creative protective styles” on YouTube, or Instagram, and you’ll have more than enough inspiration to keep your hair looking fresh throughout the entire year.

TYPES OF PROTECTIVE STYLING A protective style is when you fashion the hair in a way that prevents it from being exposed to everyday elements like wind and debris. It requires that the ends, the oldest part of the hair, be tucked away and sealed with a moisturizer. To get the most benefit from protective styling, you want all, if not most, of the hair not to be worn loosely.

• Twist Outs • Buns • Weaves or Wigs • Roller Sets • Pinned-Up Styles • Bantu Knots • Straw Sets • Braids Protective styling is essential to thriving, healthy hair. It’s really fun to style curly or natural hair. But every now and then, it’s important to give our tresses a break. The winter is the perfect time to give your hair the tender, loving, care that it needs. Wearing protective styling makes taking care of your hair a breeze. Remember, the better you are to your hair, the better it will be to you. www.ctckmagazine.com 9

Do it Yourself

DIY: Marshmallow Root & Slippery Elm Bark Powder,

Leave-In-Detangler

What You Need:

Recipe:

Medium sized pot for boiling

1.

3 cups distilled or purified water

2.

3 Tbsp of Marshmallow Root*

3.

Sprinkle the Slippery Elm Bark Powder into your pot, **(IMPORTANT— sprinkle to distribute evenly because Slippery Elm Bark Powder tends to clump together.)

4.

Now bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 15 minutes **(IMPORTANT—using your spoon, stir and watch your pot.)

2 Tbsp of Slippery Elm Bark Powder* ¼ cup of Aloe Vera Juice ¼ tsp of Vitamin E Oil Spoon Strainer Glass or plastic bowl 5 oz. container with pouring spout

*purchase at mountainroseherbs.com or local herb shop

10 January/February 2016

Add Marshmallow Root to water

5.

Your recipe should have a slimy consistency that looks coagulated.

6.

Strain ingredients into your glass or plastic bowl, making sure to yield as much gel out of the coagulated ingredients as possible.

7.

Add your Aloe Vera Juice, Vitamin E Oil and other optional oils into your container. Leave room at the top of container to save room for shaking mixture so that all blends together.

8.

Shake and you are all done!

Detangling brush Optional: Add additional essential oils that you might like for fragrance or other healthy hair care benefits—I used 3-5 drops of each—Castor Oil, Avocado Oil and Apricot Oil (Can be purchased at Whole Foods or your local health food store)

In a medium sized pot, bring distilled water or purified water to a simmer.

This recipe will give your hair great shine, slip and a soft hold. Section your hair into workable parts, depending on the length of your hair. Apply your leave in detangle from root to tip, using your detangling brush to ensure even distribution throughout. Style your hair as usual and you should have shiny defined curls that will last for a few days or a week before your next wash. Let me know if you try the recipe.

curlbellaa ~ VLOGGER CENTER STAGE ~

We asked Angela “O” aka “CURLBELLAA” … What made you decide to go natural?

I decided to go natural because I was sick and tired of all the flat ironing and manipulating my hair to be as straight as possible. I was wondering how my own texture was and from there on stopped using straighteners and starting to grow out my natural hair while wearing protective styles. What is your signature style? My signature style is a braid out.

When asked to describe her style in a word “CURLBELLAA” said she would describe her style as Eclectic! As a child, when the decision was made for you, what did your hair look like, how would your parents style your hair? “CURLBELLAA” said that her mom braided her hair with synthetic braids.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering going natural? Just do it and don’t worry about what everyone thinks! And keep your regimen as simple as possible: simplicity is key.

What does beauty mean to you? Beauty comes from the inside and is your personality showing on the outside. It’s about having a beautiful soul that is what beauty means to me.

HOW TO GET

natural hair

F- Ready for WINTER Winter READY FOR Needs assignment by Juliette Samuel

12 January/February 2016

A

ny sort of extreme weather can have a negative impact, but your hair most likely sees its happiest days in the summer. When the winter time hits, you are more prone to shedding and breakage due to the weather of the season pulling moisture from the hair. It also becomes much less shiny, and appears lifeless instead of vibrant and bouncy. Woe unto those who already have dry hair and scalp issues, because this is the time they find their hair everywhere they don’t want it to be. Hair can often be seen in the sink, in the comb, and on clothing, as it becomes weaker and sheds. Using natural hair care products is the best way to grow healthy hair. Winter care for natural hair deserves special attention because extra care is usually needed. You don’t have to live in a region with freezing temperatures for your hair to take notice. The protective winter hats we wear can even harm our hair. It also seems that many people tend to cover up their hair in the winter, leading them to neglect it. Staying indoors more often doesn’t mean you will escape the effects of winter, either. The heat indoors can also damage your hair. Since there is no avoiding this season for many of us, the best way to fight back is to make your hair stronger. Our hair should be just as moisturized, as our other body parts. In order to properly quench the thirst of the hair and scalp, you need to have a routine that uses an all-natural moisturizer and conditioner. The right moisturizer will keep hair hydrated, and this moisture can be more easily locked in with a good sealant. Furthermore, hair that is well-conditioned is stronger and softer, making it easier to detangle and style without breaking.

2. COCONUT Oil In the summer, it protects you from the sun. During the winter, it protects hair from moisture-robbing winds and harsh temperatures. Coconut oil infuses the hair with protein. Protein will make the shaft of the hair stronger, but without it, hair won’t grow. Mix coconut oil with other natural products to enhance its properties for maximum results. The rejuvenation your scalp is treated to makes this oil one of the most popular choices for natural beauty enthusiasts. It’s lightweight so there is no oily or heavy feeling in your hair. It also doubles as a style protectant, making you less likely to damage your hair while trying to achieve a desired look.

3. SHEA BUTTER Shea butter is a staple in the beauty industry, and Shea butter works wonders on both the skin and hair. It is used to treat eczema and insect bites, along with many other issues. People with sensitivities appreciate its hypoallergenic strength and its results are astonishing. This natural butter acts as a sealant to hold in moisture and can work as the moisturizer itself to encourage growth. As an anti-inflammatory, it calms irritated scalps for a soothing effect. It also contains the perfect blend of healthy acids, and can shield your hair from harmful sun rays.

Ready for Winter Needs assignment

These are the four best moisturizers/conditioners for winter hair care-naturally. 1. CastoR Oil Unprocessed castor oil can be added to a variety of mixtures for healthier hair. It is extremely thick, and a little bit goes a long way. Because of its thickness, you might want to blend it with another oil, such as the ones mentioned in this article. It won’t take long before you see a difference when using this oil. Get ready to say goodbye to thin locks. The oil improves the thickness of your hair, and will add shine to it. The color of your hair can also be naturally deepened by castor oil. Through its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it can eliminate bad germs and keep them from returning. Split ends can ruin an otherwise attractive head of hair. Instead of opting for haircuts to get rid the ends, it’s better to prevent them and castor oil does a great job of this. Its conditioning properties repair split ends and long-term treatments are recommended

4. OLIVE Oil Olive oil is most healthy for hair when it’s in pure form. Color will range from champagne gold to green. This is one of best ways to tell if it has been cold-pressed. Cold pressed olive oil is always the better choice. This way, the oil will be more effective because necessary ingredients have not been cooked out of it. Olive oil will leave your hair super soft as it detoxifies the hair and the scalp to get rid of harmful impurities. It lasts a long time without going bad, so it can be bought in large quantities and can even reverse some of the effects that hormonal problems have had on the hair. You want hair that will be beautiful year-round. By using these products, you can maintain your shine and see growth throughout the cold months of winter. Remember, it never hurts to wear your hair in long-lasting styles that will keep your hair in place without damaging it during the season. Looking for a product that contains all of the moisturizing oils from this article, try this! Dedicated to Your Beauty,

How Sulfate-free Hair Products are Better for Natural Curls! by Idd Aziz

T

wo of the most common hair care products that women use are shampoos and conditioners. While many people are aware of the different brands of hair care products in the market, they don’t know that these products contain sulfates. Sulfates are chemicals used in removing oils from hair and found in the regular hair care products. Studies have shown that sulfate plays a huge role in weakening hair follicles, thus weakening your natural curls. To protect your natural curls, you need to avoid the regular products and go for sulfate-free products.

Retention of Hair Color:

Many women tend to color their hair to change their looks. Sulfates not only strip out natural oils, they also have the ability of stripping out the hair color, thus, when you use the regular products on your hair, your hair starts to fade. Sulfate-free products are mild and don’t remove the hair color. This ensures that your hair retains its great look for a long time.

F- Sulfate Free Needs assignment

Benefits

There are many benefits that come with these products.

Better Moisture Retention:

For your natural curls to remain healthy and shiny, you need to keep them moisturized. Regular products that contain sulfates have been shown to dry out hair leaving it dull and frizzy. Sulfate-free products gently clean your hair, which ensures that the hair doesn’t get excessively dry. The products have also been shown to hold moisture in, thus, leaving your hair looking great.

Retains Natural Oils:

Hair follicles produce plenty of natural oils that keep the hair healthy and moisturized. Additionally, it allows for better moisture retention, sulfate-free products also retain natural oils in hair. Although sulfates were designed to remove dirt and oil from hair, they also strip the natural oils. This causes the hair to be dry, brittle, and unmanageable. Sulfate-free products gently wash hair without stripping the natural oils. This maintains your hairs great shape. Hair that isn’t covered in enough natural oil has been shown to have the tendency of curving away from the other hair strands, thus, disrupting the natural curls. Image: © Zachi Evenor. Lilium candidum. Photo sourced from Flickr.

14 January/February 2016

Reduces Irritation:

There are some people who are irritated by sulfates. This irritation makes your scalp itchy, sore and difficult to manage. In severe cases, the sulfates tend to cause spots on the scalp. Studies have shown that when you use sulfate-free products you don’t get irritated.

Other reasons to go for sulfatefree hair care products

Studies have shown that sulfates are easily absorbed through the skin and into the body. While in the body it mimics estrogen behavior which results in hormonal imbalance in women. Scientists also believe that sulfates have 1.4-dioxane, which is a potential carcinogen.

Parting shot

The main drawback of sulfate-free products is that they are more expensive than their regular counterparts. Despite this, careful analysis shows that the pros far outweigh the cons. To maintain natural curly hair, one to try is Tosca sulfate-free hair care products. Sulfate-free products are not only healthy for you, they are also healthy for the environment.

Guide How to Soften Scratchy Makeup Brushes by Idd Aziz

T

F- Soften Brushes Needs assignment

he aim of makeup brushes is to make you beautiful. The unfortunate thing is that there are some scratchy brushes that cause facial abrasions when you use them. If you have a scratchy brush, you shouldn’t dispose it—you should soften it. Here are some ways to soften your brushes.

The most effective ways to soften your brushes include: Rinsing:

You should rinse the brushes thoroughly with lukewarm tap water. You should run through the brush bristles with your fingers to ensure that all the bristles are exposed to water. You should massage away the caked-on makeup until bristles are perfectly clean.

Washing:

After rinsing the brushes you should now wash them. For ideal results, you should wash them under a steady stream of warm water. When washing them you should apply foaming facial cleanser into the bristles to give the bristles a perfect look. Once you are through with the cleaning you should rinse the bristles thoroughly to prevent them from clumping together. After washing you should dry the brushes by putting them outside so that they can dry completely before putting them back into the bag. You should ensure that the brushes are completely dry to prevent them from smelling like a wet dog. To avoid damaging the bristles you should put the brushes flat on the ground.

Other Maintenance Tips In addition to cleaning the makeup brushes, there are other maintenance tips that you need to consider to ensure that your brushes last for a long time.

Keep Them Standing:

After applying makeup you should place your brushes standing up. You should also separate your brushes between uses. This means that you shouldn’t use the same brush for all of your makeup needs. To ensure that the brushes stay soft for a long time and at the same time last for long, you should take good care of them. Even with the greatest care it’s inevitable for the brushes to get old. You should be keen and be quick to note when your brushes are old and replace them as soon as possible. When buying new brushes you should ensure that they are of high-quality. For ideal results you should do plenty of research to be sure that you are buying from a reputable store. When making your purchase you should note that different brushes are ideal for different functions. If cleaning is not going to get the job done and you are looking to purchase at an affordable price, check out this site: www.myfacebrush.com, they have many types and size of brushes to choose from.

LOVE AND

F- 5 Benefits tive Styles

I

Needs assignment

n celebration of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to find a “Naturalista” to talk about natural hair and love. Part two of my quest was to try and dispel the recent negative press that says men don’t want women who wear their naturally textured hair. I am sure that you have read the negative articles or viewed some videos on You Tube with titles like; “Dealing with men & their opinion on natural hair”, “Do men like natural hair?” “Why black men hate natural hair” “Naturals with white men? Fake Love?” I believe that for every negative there is always a positive and Mitch & Angela are the positive! Angela “O” is our featured blogger and is also known as “Curlbellaa” on You Tube and here is their story.

18 January/February 2016

MEET ANGELA & MITCH

When Angela was on vacation in Houston, she took her laptop with her and in the evenings she would log onto Facebook. Because they had mutual friends, Mitch’s profile repeatedly popped up for a couple of days. She said that she thought Mitch was very handsome and after a few days she decided to poke him. He poked back and after going back and forth poking each other she sent him a message asking him; “Are we only going to keep on poking each other or start a conversation?” Needless to say, they started talking. The same day that she returned home, they met face to face. They met outside of the city where they ended up talking for hours at a parking lot with a milkshake.

I asked Mitch, when he first saw Angela and her beautiful textured natural hair, what were his first thoughts? Mitch said that her hair wasn’t natural the first time he saw her, her hair was straightened. “So the first time I saw Angela with natural hair I wondered why she was hiding her natural hair using weaves etc. because I loved it and think natural hair suits her the most.” Mitch said that seeing her natural hair for the first time was like meeting her for the first time again. Angela is Nigerian & Dutch, her dad is Nigerian from the Igbo tribe, that’s where her second name and last name comes from (Angela Nwanyieze Onuoha). Her father moved to The Netherlands when he was 21 and met her mom. Her mom is from The Netherlands (Dutch) and was born in Rotterdam. Her mother is 1 of 8 sibling. Angela has 2 siblings: A brother who is 21 and a sister who is 16. Mitch was born in Naarden and for 24 years lived in a small village called Muiderberg. The rest of his family still lives there;

that I had for the month. After she ordered a second glass of Prosecco, I started to panic and count my money under the table to check if a still had enough to pay for everything. At the end of the date I had just enough so that was a real relief. I of course kept my cool and didn’t let Angela know a single thing about this situation. Even though I had only one drink and no desert to compensate! We had a lot of fun and had good conversations. At the end of the date we had our first kiss. I asked each of them what do they love about each other? Mitch said, I love that Angela is very caring, she’s always there for me when I need her the most. She’s honest, patient and has a good listening ear. Angela said, I love his sense of humor. He is very generous to everyone and wants to make everyone happy. His honesty and his patience with me, because I’m not always the easiest to be around. I had to ask Mitch if he ever helps Angela with her hair? He said, “Honestly, no, because we are both very particular on how we want to do and style our hair”. Mitch said he’s afraid that he would not be able to achieve the results that she has in mind and he knows nothing about styling textured hair. He also said that he wouldn’t like her to do his hair either. So what are their plans for February 14th 2016? Normally we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because it isn’t a big thing here in The Netherlands. For us every day is like Valentine’s Day, we try to make each other feel special and love each other more than the day before.

grandparents, mom, dad, aunt and uncle along with their kids. Mitch said, “It’s a village where everybody knows each other, I had a great childhood there and I love visiting everyone” Mitch has 1 older sister and they are 7 years apart. Mitch said “My sister was the first grandchild in our family, and because of that was very spoiled.” When he was born she asked my mother ‘can we put him back in?’ He is very close to his sister and says family is very important to him, and he visits everyone weekly. Mitch & Angela currently live in Almere, a town nearby Amsterdam. They have lived together for over a year and bought their first apartment there. Angela already lived in Almere and Mitch wanted to live nearby Muiderberg so they choose this city to live in. Angela said that “We’re completely settled in our apartment and it really feels like home. We love to invite friends and family over and have diner and drinks.” When Mitch was asked what attracted him to Angela he said, “Her personality, her sense of humor, her drive and ambition.” She knows what she wants when it comes to her job and her personal life. He said that Angela’s smile makes him smile, her overall appearance, her style, her hair and makeup is always on point. And she has a lot of ‘junk in the trunk’!

Angela’s response to the same question was, “his ambition, he is always aiming for success. His humor, his beard and the fact that he is a real family man. Angela also said that she likes his style when it comes to clothing; “he always asks me for advice, then disagrees but eventually listens to me anyway”. She was attracted to his athletic physique and said he is very disciplined in eating the right foods and going to the gym.

Needs assignment MITCH DESCRIBES THEIR FIRST DATE

Our first date was a wine and dine at a restaurant in Almere. As a gentleman I planned on paying for the first date because that’s what a man is supposed to do. We first ordered drinks and Angela ordered a Prosecco. Mind you, a Prosecco is €7,50 a glass and I was still a student. The amount of money that I had with me was the amount that I calculated that this date would cost. That was the last money

Tips for Obtaining Maximum Needs assignment Moisture

M

oisture…it seems to be the bane of most curly hair maven’s existence. The typical head of curly hair undergoes a myriad of challenges, but properly moisturizing the hair seems to be an obstacle, no matter which hair type you have. With winter heavy in the forefront, it can be even harder to obtain luscious locks. Fortunately, there is a solution. You are not destined for dryness. You just need to be educated on how to moisturize correctly. Here are 7 tips on how to obtain maximum moisture for curly hair, no matter your hair type.

1

2

IT STARTS ON WASH DAY

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Type 2 or a Type 4, what you decide to do on wash day will ultimately dictate how the rest of your moisturizing process will go. Use a sulfatefree shampoo, as sulfates tend to strip the hair of moisture. You should always follow up every shampoo with a rich conditioner full of moisturizing ingredients. Alternatively, you can ditch the shampoo altogether and do a conditioner wash. Finally, deep condition your hair 20-30 minutes one to four times a month.

5

LOOK FOR THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS

Always examine the ingredient list of all of your products. Look for ingredients that are moisture friendly like Shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, cetyl esters, vegetable oils and wheat germ. You want to also gravitate towards humectants, which really aid in soaking in the moisture. Examples of humectants include Panthenol, vegetable glycerin and sorbitol. Conversely, avoid ingredients that dry out the hair. Sulfates, silicones and parabens are all ingredients, which don’t do curly girls any favors. You may notice protein has a negative effect on the strands. Keratin, silk amino acids and hydrolyzed wheat protein are all ingredients you should avoid if you’re protein sensitive.

PRE-POO YOUR HAIR

Before washing your hair, you should treat it to a luxury treatment of a pre-poo. A pre-poo is when you drench your hair in oil just prior to washing. Oils that are great for prepoo’s are Coconut, Olive Oil and Moroccan. Apply the oils on the hair from root to tip, and leave on for 20 minutes. Experiment with different oils to see which ones your hair responds best to. If you want to take it to the next level, give yourself a hot oil treatment.

F- Valentine’s Day 6

DRINK MORE WATER

People really underestimate how much water and a proper diet plan into the health of our hair. The human body is comprised of 70% water. So it stands to reason if you’re severely dehydrated, your hair will be too. The recommended about of water for the average adult is eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. If you’re particularly active, you should increase your water count even more, because you’ll be sweating out the water you drink during your workouts.

3

DON’T WASH AWAY THE BENEFITS

Once the cleansing process is complete, don’t rinse out your conditioner completely. Allow some of it to remain on your locks, because your conditioner contains moisturizing properties that can penetrate the hair shaft, leaving you with luscious locks. In some cases, you may even want to forego rinsing it out at all. Many curly girls have experienced moisture success by keeping conditioner in their hair.

4

USE THE L.O.C METHOD, OR A VARIATION OF

The L.O.C Method stands for liquid, oil, cream. The idea is that you layer your products in a specific order for maximum moisture impact. You begin with water, or a water-based liquid leave-in, follow up with a layer of oil, and finally apply a cream that will help you seal in the moisture. For some, this method works beautifully. For others, you may find you only need a leave-in and oil, or perhaps the cream comes before the oil. Or you might have better luck mixing all three. It’s okay to experiment. You’ll know what works best for you by trial and error.

7

STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE

This step is vital. Curly girls have a tendency to want to switch products constantly. You may find that you’re a wash, leave-in, oil girl or a wash, oil, cream girl, or a combination. Just do what works for you. Once you’ve defined the best method for your moisture routine, keep at it. If you notice that your hair begins to act funky, then it may be time to incorporate a clarifying shampoo. But whatever you do, stick to what works! This is a good base for getting you started on a great moisturizing hair routine. As always, you will learn best by trial and error. Know that what works for one curly girl may not work for another. If you implement these 7 tips, you’ll be well on your way to happy, healthy and supple hair today.

Horoscopes Predictions for January/February 2016

Aries (21 March – 19 April )

Gemini (21 May – 20 June)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Cancer (21 June – 22 July)

You will be able to develop your natural talents in a way that will impress your friends, and may even generate much attention. There will be focus on practical and cash matters, and will lead to some significant opportunities to boost your savings. Set realistic targets, not impressive ones. There are chances for you to make new and positive changes in your life. Romantically, this is an excellent time, although the emphasis is more likely to be on cuddles than passion. You should end this period feeling that the future is extremely rosy. Favorable Dates: Jan. 4, 5, 13, 14, 22, 23. Feb. 1, 5, 10, 14, 19, 23. Favorable Colors: Red & Green

You could be less assertive and energetic than normal, which other people might misinterpret as a signal to voice their opinions. Trust your own instinct, and don’t be pushed around. Giving yourself a chunk of time out will help you get your thoughts back in perspective. Romance will be sweet, although an underlying reluctance to be tied down could slow the pace too much. The planets will introduce a much more calming effect after January, but by then finding time to enjoy the budding or refreshed relationship will be the problem. Favorable Dates: Jan. 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21. Feb. 2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25. Favorable Colors: Blue & Yellow

24 January/February 2016

There may be positive changes that absorb your energies. These changes are most likely to do with work, but equally they could relate to the home environment. You can expect some sizzling developments in your love-life. The planets are likely to pull you in two directions: between material gain and romantic developments. Balance is crucial, and simple meditation, structured breathing exercises, or even some very basic yogic exercises will help you feel grounded. Your cash levels will need to be healthy in February when you get an opportunity to travel to a new place. Favorable Dates: Jan. 2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25. Feb. 3, 8, 12, 17, 21, 26. Favorable Colors: Red & Green Your attitude will be positive, and you want to be moving at all times, and have plenty of energy to do so. You will be ready to shed all of this seriousness, heaviness, and dreariness for some sunshine and laughter. Keep an open mind and you’ll find that a new interest makes you think about some major changes that should come into effect in New Year. You will have a new vision of your major life goals, so keep your confidence levels high and keep reaching for your ambitions. Favorable Dates: Jan. 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22. Feb. 5, 7, 14, 16, 23, 25. Favorable Colors: Blue & Yellow

Leo (23 July – 22 August)

You will be quieter than you usually are, and don’t want to let anyone know what you’re working on, or what plans you’re coming up with. In fact, you come up with your best ideas and plans when people aren’t bothering you. Your imagination is active now, but you may get lost in daydreams and fantasy, wanting to dive into other worlds and realms. However when Sun changes sign on January 20th, the world comes to you, and you love the attention that you get. You may come across as friendlier, prouder, and warmer then. Favorable Dates: Jan. 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, 21. Feb. 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, 21. Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

This is a good time for you financially, and you tend to have the money you need, but you also like to spend more and splurge. It’s an excellent time if you’re in the arts or beauty industry. You will enjoy indulging, engaging in your senses, feeling more sensual, and wanting to get in touch with your body. You can savor good foods, fine wines, enjoy great music, and feel one with nature, marveling at the beauty. In love, you want to connect with your partner physically, if attached, and are more passionate with them. Favorable Dates: Jan. 1, 2, 10, 11, 19, 20. Feb. 3, 5, 12, 14, 20, 23. Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

Libra (23 September – 22 October)

It’ll be a period full of ambitions, which will stimulate the organization spirit, competitiveness, initiative, and the combative spirit. In your wish to impose, you might be forced to make some radical decisions, maybe unwanted ones, and you might also have a rebellious behavior, which your bosses or authorities may not like. You’ll benefit from valuable collaborators and allies. Relationships will have an essential role throughout the month, and the cooperation with the others might prove to be very fruitful. If you are ready for love, get out and mingle. Favorable Dates: Jan. 2, 5, 11, 14, 20, 23. Feb. 3, 7, 12, 16, 21, 25. Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November)

You have completed a phase within a larger cycle. You have reached a place of balance where everything ‘feels right’. You have succeeded in uniting mind, body, and spirit. You have reached a state of mind which allows you to see everything clearly. An opportunity has been presented to you; you’d do well to take it. Determine what your desired outcome or goal is and dedicate yourself to achieving it. Relationship has reached a logical point of conclusion and may culminate in marriage. If you are single, you may find compatible love match soon. Favorable Dates: Jan. 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22. Feb. 5, 9, 14, 18, 23, 27. Favorable Colors: Yellow & White

Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December)

You can become lazy with your beliefs, and with opportunities for expansion. You can be overly optimistic or pessimistic and it gets in the way. Keep yourself from getting too high, or too low. You can finish a work project, reach a new level with your work, or feel like you should stop the work you’re doing and move on. You may feel an intense need to eliminate what you don’t need anymore, becoming very aware of how much it holds you back, and you don’t feel attached to these things emotionally anymore. Favorable Dates: Jan. 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22. Feb. 5, 9, 14, 18, 23, 27. Favorable Colors: Red & Blue

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

You can be presented with a wonderful opportunity to do something in the background, and it leads to bigger and better things for you. You can focus on the things that you need to let go of, and clear out the clutter from your life quite effectively. You can also focus on your spiritual self, and pursue metaphysical ventures. You’re likely to find it difficult to concentrate much, if fun is lacking at the moment. This is easily remedied by taking up a new interest or spending time on an already established interest will fire you up. Favorable Dates: Jan. 2, 8, 11, 17, 20, 26. Feb. 2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25. Favorable Colors: Yellow & White

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

The months ahead will start with a rocky patch: a crisis of confidence and a need to distance yourself from your friends. You will not be able to express your original ideas, although you will need to learn to put your foot down once in a while. There could be a problem with communication, but if you’re willing to listen and receive, this too you can overcome. Getting motivated won’t be so easy in January, but February will be revitalizing and invigorating. Personal relationships will improve as you establish your independence culminating in a boost at work. Favorable Dates: Jan. 6, 7, 15, 16, 24, 25. Feb. 7, 8, 16, 17, 25, 26. Favorable Colors: Yellow & White

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

You could be letting go of demanding partnerships or changing the way you respond. Either way, this confidence has you grinning from ear to ear. It is definitely your time to shine. You can focus on subconscious issues, your spiritual side, the metaphysical, or your dreams. You’re more compassionate and sensitive with others. In love, you’re romantic and dreamy, and view your partner ideally, if attached. If single, you want someone who will be sweet and kind to your heart, and who you feel a karmic link to. Favorable Dates: Jan. 1, 8, 10, 17, 19, 26. Feb. 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, 21. Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Advice

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? Ask Ninon! Dear Ninon,

My teenage son has always been a great student and respectful son, but lately he’s become moody, sullen, and withdrawn. He doesn’t want to sit down for family dinners anymore. His grades are dropping in school and he has changed the set of friends he is hanging out with. Could he be using drugs? He says no when we ask him, but he’s started dressing in all black and wearing eye liner too!

Dear Desperate,

All is OK… First he would never had told you he was having a penis enlargement if it was for this imaginary woman you have brought into the picture. He is missing sex just like you are. He is planning on having an affair with you, AGAIN! So now it is your turn to let him know you are getting your breasts enlarged. Make it all about the two of you, there is no other woman or man? Correct … Now to the next 30 years of blissful sex with a larger penis and larger breasts…

Ask Ninon

– Desperate to get our son back, Bewildered parents Las Vegas

Ninon de Vere De Rosa is the president of NinonSpeaks Media Image.

Design In Progress - Lyndsey

Dear Desperate Woman in Black, Like all teenagers, your son is developing into a young man and very vulnerable to his peers, and trying to find himself. AND maybe he has! You just don’t know what it is. Asking about drugs is a NO! NO! We already know the answer, they are all going to say NO to whatever you ask… Try and be on his side and get involved with him, watch your tongue, it can push him further away, go along with what he is doing and then you will find out what is really going on with your son in BLACK. Without getting angry and stern talk WITH him NOT at him…

– Hugs, Ninon Dear Ninon,

After 30 years of marriage and the last few being rather void of love making, my husband announced he’s getting a penis enlargement. Is he having an affair do you think, or planning to have one, or is he suffering from erectile dysfunction and doesn’t want to tell me?

– Help me please, Desperate in the Bedroom Las Vegas

– Hugs, Ninon

Dear Ninon,

My dear friend of 15 years has suddenly become bitch from hell. She criticizes everything I do, what I wear, my makeup, my housework skills etc...We went to college together and I thought she was the best friend ever, but since I got married to my college sweetheart (who she once dated) she is ripping me apart on every level.

– Please help me, Lost College Friend in Las Vegas Dear Ripped Apart,

If you cannot see this picture you have to be totally blind with a very big heart. If your best friend dated this guy and she knew at one time you were college sweethearts she cannot be that much of a best friend. Ever thought she may have wanted to marry him and you got him??? Attanasio Financial Strategies Group Our Firm Many people, especially women, believe that their financial well-being is linked solely to their ability to earn a high income. True financial independence, however, has much more to do with understanding and taking advantage of the finances you have. It's more about setting financial goals and learning to use financial strategies that will help you meet your objectives. My goal as a financial professional is to help you plan for financial security. Whether your goals involve building wealth through investing, funding a child's college education, planning for a comfortable retirement, or protecting your estate, I can help you develop a roadmap to reach your goals and make wise decisions to help improve your financial situation.
