letter letter from the publisher Dear Reader...
It is July and we are already halfway through the year- Happy Independence Day! Today, I am filled with gratitude because of the empowering, strong, positive women I have had the pleasure to work with in the creation of this issue. It begins with how we treat one another and women can be harsh, critical, cruel and saboteur’s of each another. Why does it give some pleasure in tearing another down – when we should be working towards elevating and lifting each other up? We can be a powerful and unstoppable force – for the great of good – if we could find a way to work together in a supportive, encouraging, non-judgmental capacity. During this journey, I have reached out to many women who have walked a certain path before me. From these women I have sought out their wisdom, advice and support in one way or another. This type of giving, does not have to come with a price tag. For me, if called upon to assist a women trying to navigate towards reaching their destination, I would graciously do what I could to help them, if I had something to offer or bring to the table. Is it that we are afraid to see another woman rise to the occasion and reach greatness, is it jealousy, or is it that we just don’t want to see another woman be happier or do better than us? Whatever the reason, if I have just described you or someone you know, it is time to make a change. When we hold one woman back, we hold all woman back and when one woman is successful, another is successful. This behavior can be the breeding ground for evil or for good – You decide! Needless to say, I have received great feedback and support from women that I have reached out to, I also have had many women, too many to mention, ignore my requests. It is easy to become disheartened and cynical, my advice is that you try not to let it sway you from forging ahead. In this issue you will meet three empowering, supportive women, who I reached out to and am honored that they agreed to work with me. Juliette Samuel –Owner of NYRAJY Skin Care – Esthetician/Author/Publisher and Aroma therapists- Dedicated to your beauty! Jenesis LaForcarde – Owner/Designer of Woman’s Touch Apparel – Her brand stands for “Women Empowerment” Danielle Green – Owner of Radically Curly Salon – Her philosophy is to embrace and rock the fabric of your hair and be Radically Curly! Regardless of your current job or situation, it’s important that you be able to reach out to other women who are willing and able to help you succeed. Thank you, enjoy and be safe this 4th of July.
Carpe Diem my readers!

Publisher response: Our salon directory receives a lot of comments from our readers, everyone seems to really enjoy it. Initially my plan called for highlighting this section in our Premier Issue solely, I believe the customer is always right so I will keep the salon directory in the publication for as long as I can to keep you happy! Thank you Rain.

about Ashley’s journey – her hair is beautiful. – Sam S.
I am Caucasian and I consider myself a “Naturalista”. Your article about “Natural hair is the title reserved for black woman” was spot on! I really liked the way you blended the perspectives of a Caucasian and an African American woman. People like to place labels on everything in our society and it appears that you make a conscience effort to ensure that race is not a factor in your publication. I Love it! – Wendy R.
Publisher response: Wendy, Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine is all inclusive! Hair is not about skin color or race, it is about texture and how we all have individual needs based on our hair type. I really wanted that article to be something special and after talking to a friend, it was suggested that I publish both sides of the spectrum. I am glad I decided to take her suggestion, it turned out pretty good that way.

MEET OUR COVER MODELS Kameron Kuykendall, age 14 Kameron’s hair is very thick and curly, he requires a thicker conditioner. His “cannot live without” hair care product is: Cantu Shea Butter Leave in conditioner repair cream. How does Kameron achieve his look? He washes his hair, then rinses hair with warm water. While his hair is still wet he adds conditioner. His mother, Tiffany Kuykendall, makes her own shea butter mixture recipe, which he also applies to his wet hair, about a dime sized amount. He then brushes his hair, using a Denman brush, making sure to distribute the product through-out. Final step, he gives his head a shake, to get rid of excess water and product then lets it fall.
Makayla Kuykendall, age 12 Her hair is also thick with heavy curls. Makayla’s hair requires a thicker conditioner because her hair soaks/eats it up, according to her mother, Tiffany. Makayla, like her brother Kameron, also uses mom’s homemade Shea Butter mix, which makes her hair softer and easier to comb through. If you want to achieve her look here is her routine: She washes her hair using, As I Am Co-wash, then she rinses her hair with warm water, and she then adds conditioner to hair that is still wet. She then applies a dime sized amount of mother’s homemade Shea Butter mix followed by a small homemade oil mixture. Brushes hair using a Denman brush to distribute product throughout hair, then she shakes hair followed by a run of her fingers through her hair to get more volume. At night, she will pineapple her hair, put it in a bun or braids and sleeps on a satin pillowcase.
Zivah Kuykendall, Age 8 Her mother describes her hair as Wavy, with loose curls and she needs a lighter, almost water-like conditioner. Zivah’s Holy Grail is Suave Coconut Conditioner mixed with water and oil. This combination helps to detangle and comb her hair with ease. To achieve her look, her hair is co-washed with Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner, rinsed with warm water and conditioner added while hair is still wet. Hair is brushed using a Denman, to distribute product throughout hair, then she shakes hair and runs her fingers through her hair to get more volume. At night, she will pineapple her hair, put it in a bun or braids and sleeps on a satin pillowcase.

Q&A
Hello Denise, The best ways to achieve definition and softness on type 3 hair is to use a leave-in conditioner throughout the hair and a light gel on the ends. Kinky Curly Not Today leave -in is mild and not greasy and their Curly Custard (gel) when used lightly is a perfect match for type 3 hair. In order to recreate your amazing blowout and flat iron from the salon I suggest that you ask your stylist to give you a blow dry/flat iron lesson at the salon. Good luck Denise, let me know how you make out.
Dear Danielle, I have naturally curly hair, but I seldom wear it in its natural state. My hair is very thick and coarse and my problem is detangling my hair. Can you recommend a good hair conditioner for detangling type 3b/4a hair? Valantin T. - Las Vegas July / August 2015

Dear Danielle, I embrace my naturally curly hair 90% of the time because it is easier to manage on a day to day basis being a wife and a mother of two active children. Today I had my hair cut, colored, blow dried and flat ironed by my stylist and I love the way it looks. I just don't have the time required to achieve the sleek look on my own every day. What are the best ways to achieve definition and softness for someone like me with type 3 hair? Denise- New Jersey

Thanks for your questions, keep them coming.
Hello Valantin, Detangling thick 3b/4a hair can be a challenge if the hair isn't prepped and pre-treated before shampooing and conditioning. On your dry hair, section it into 4 quadrants and apply your favorite light oil from mid shaft down to the ends. Then take small subsections and finger detangle to remove hair that has naturally shed from the scalp. This is where it gets tricky. After each quadrant is detangled, braid your hair into 4 loose braids and apply your favorite conditioner onto damp hair. Yes, condition before cleansing. Let the hair soak for a few minutes, rinse then lightly cleanse the braided hair with either a co-wash or a mild shampoo. Rinse and apply a leave in detangler like Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Detangler Extra Moisture and you should be able to finger detangle easily or use a detangling comb/brush.
Dear Danielle, For years we have been told to stay away from products that contain oils and wax (because it weighs the hair down). Now it seems that more and more products are boasting about the benefit of oils for your hair. I have watched do-it-yourself videos on how to make conditioners that use coconut oil. My question is do we or don't we use oils? If so, what are the best oils to use for healthy hair? Tabatha S. - California Hello Tabatha, Oils are definitely a personal choice. If too much oil is applied to the hair then you run into other problems like frizz and oil run off on everything that your natural

hair comes into contact with. Coconut, jojoba, sweet almond and grape seed oils can be mixed together for a pre-soak on natural hair. Choosing an oil that fits with your aroma palette is key. Our natural oils accumulate naturally on the scalp but have a hard time making its way down the hair strand. Using a light oil to seal the mid shaft and ends before and after detangling the hair should be enough to keep the hair healthy.
Dear Danielle, My hair is currently chemically straightened, I would love to go natural. I am not sure where to begin with the process and would like your expert opinion. Would it be best to cut my hair off and do the "big chop" from the start, or is there a healthy way to transition? Judi V. - Las Vegas Hello Judi, This is a common question and a great one. Transitioning can be more work than just going for the big chop. Fighting with two textures and dealing with lots of breakage and shedding can drive you crazy. Perhaps holding onto the length may be what is needed until the natural hair is long enough for you to do a big chop. Either way you will get the healthy hair without chemicals by cutting a little at a time or chopping it off. My suggestion is to chop it and watch it grow that's the fun part of going natural. Instead of spending time transitioning and finding that in between style that may only last one day go shopping for some fabulous accessories and a red lip color and ROCK your TWA!
D.I.Y. Henna for your hair: Always start with freshly shampooed hair, do not condition your hair after the initial shampoo, you will condition later. If you wait too long to apply the henna after you shampoo, your natural scalp oils may inhibit the dye in the henna from reaching your roots. Be sure to shampoo prior to application of henna. Remember: Henna is permanent!
• Henna needs time to oxidize, allow 48 hours for henna to reveal its final color. • Results will vary for every individual. • Henna only comes in one color - red. • Henna will not lighten your hair.
Step 1:
Place the dry henna powder in the bowl. Begin adding the hot water to your powder. Add a little at a time until the mixture is the consistency of yogurt. Stir well to remove lumps.
Step 2: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it stand for 12 -24 hours at 70 degrees F or 21 degrees C. This will allow the dye to release from the henna. Step 3: Now that the dye has released, you can add the henna mixture into your plastic application bottle with nozzle tip (for easier application). If you opt to apply the mixture with your hands, remember – henna stains be sure you are wearing your disposable gloves. Step 4: Place towel around your neck and shoulders to protect your clothing and cover floor surfaces in the area that you will be working. Step 5: Section your hair in 4 – 6 equal parts, depending on the length of your hair. Put on your
What you will need: • Dry henna powder, enough for your length of hair • Plastic bowl • Spoon for stirring • Plastic cling wrap • Green Tea bags (Optional) • Water – boiled with green tea bags if you desire or without. • Plastic application bottle with nozzle or your hands will do • Disposable gloves • Towels (use old ones, they will get stained) • Moisturizing shampoo • Moisturizing conditioner disposable gloves and begin applying the Henna mixture, one section at a time until all of your hair is covered. Be sure that you don’t forget the roots of your hair. be used as a skin moisturizer and best of all – ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS!
Step 6: Wrap your hair with plastic wrap then cover it with a disposable plastic shower cap. It's important to keep the henna moist while it is processing. Allow it to remain on the hair for at least 2 to 4 hours. I sleep with my mixture overnight. If you decide to process your hair this way, be sure to protect your pillow case with a towel, in case of accident. Step 7: Remove the henna from your hair, first by thoroughly rinsing your hair with warm water. Be careful this can be messy, especially if this is your first time. Rinse very well then shampoo your hair with a moisturizing shampoo followed by a moisturizing conditioner. Henna can be drying, I recommend a deep conditioner immediately following the cleansing. If time allows sit under a hooded dryer and read a magazine! July / August 2015

Henna
The benefits for natural hair Written By Tiara Butler
Lawsonia Inermis is an ancient healer that has staked its claim across the Western world. Henna is best known for keeping the most beautiful women in ancient times as glamorous as their reputations still hold. It’s also commonly used as a dye to create elaborate designs on the hands, feet, and stomachs of women participating in Middle Eastern and African ceremonies. Now, you don’t need a passport to get your hands on the rich dye, it’s readily available all across the globe. Let’s talk about what that means to you out there in natural hair world. 12
July / August 2015
What Is Henna?
I
t’s a dye derived from the dried, milled, and sifted leaves of the Lawsonia Inermis plant. In order to activate its properties, you have to add a mild acid component such as lemon juice or strong tea. Many naturalistas turn to henna for a chemical free hair color. Depending on your hair texture,
WWW.CTCKMagazine.com
color, the freshness of the henna, harvesting region, storage process, length of the treatment and steps taken during the application, will yield varying results. You may end up with an auburn, orange tint to your coils or it may become a deep burgundy. Some people’s hair will turn chestnut brown after henna application, some even end up deep blue-black.
What to Expect During the Process Lawsonia bonds to protein, making it a magnet to your hair. After the henna is applied, it binds to the keratin in your hair, beginning the process for a permanent coating. It latches to the cuticle without penetrating the hair shaft, this feature makes it ideal for women who want to ensure their hair preserves its natural state even after coloring. Repeat applications are usually needed to achieve the look you’re after. With every coat of henna, you add more permanent layers over your cuticles. Permanent. Remember this. When spoken in reference of henna, it’s a literal term. The only way to get rid of the result is to grow your hair, cut the hennaed sections, or strip the hair using harsh chemicals. Considering the fact that its natural properties are probably what’s guided you to consider henna, I don’t think harsh chemicals would be too kind on your curl pattern. If you’re completely unsatisfied or really want to get a new color, try applying a dye over the henna to see if you like those results better. Don’t be misled by the fact that henna dye on skin eventually fades. That only happens because of the shedding of skin cells and building of replacement cells. Hair doesn’t reconstruct in the same manner. Once you go henna, you never go back.
application. Henna isn’t really protein, so don’t let it replace your usual treatments, but the results are nearly identical. Want to rid your scalp of dandruff and scales, you’ll also enjoy the antibacterial and antifungal properties of henna. With regular use, you’ll start to see the flakes disappear. Tired of losing the feeling in your arms when trying to perform your weekly “stretching” styles? Henna is also known for lightly loosening the curl pattern of heavily curled, coarse hair. The shrinkage won’t go away overnight. Those that report a change say they performed 3-4 treatments within 3-8 weeks. The layers of coating likely weigh the hair down, allowing gravity to loosen the tension in their strands. This same benefit can help those with fine, limp hair. Repeat treatments will add density to your hair, replacing thin strands with a lot of body and even more shine.
There Are No Guarantees When opting for henna, you kind of have to cross your fingers and hope for
the best. If you’re out to achieve a rich auburn color, you may not reach your desires on the first go around. You may not even achieve the results you are seeking after the 3rd applications. While the results aren’t guaranteed, you still have the security in knowing you’re using an all-natural product. Summertime sparks the henna harvest but flash floods, monsoons, or other weather phenomenon can affect the way the henna reacts. Storage options vary with these environmental changes, all of which play a role in your results. Henna thickens your hair but it does not condition it. If you have naturally dry hair, multiple henna applications can make it even worse. Dry hair is a common complaint from henna users. Start with well-moisturized hair and continue to take extra measures to keep your hair hydrated after using henna. Thickening is permanent, remember this. So as your new growth comes in, the texture will be different. You’ll need to continue the treatments to avoid developing a point of weakness in your strands. If you allow your hair to continue to grow out with two different textures, you can experience the same pains of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, breakage and or irreparable damage, nothing you want.
Bountiful Benefits
You also need to be mindful of the type of henna being used. It needs to be pure. Never apply henna that’s been mixed with leads and metals. This may lead to an allergic reaction and other medical consequences.
Don’t let that last sentence scare you away. Use as a dye is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to henna. That permanent coating may actually be beneficial. A henna application literally coats your hair with Lawsonia, smoothing the cuticles, resulting in shiny coils and reduced tangles.
For best results, always purchase your henna from a reputable and trustworthy retailer. To be safe, you may wish to allow a professional to perform the application. (Saves a ton of time in clean up, although you may need to consider what you wish to do while waiting the recommended 4+ hours for the henna to take effect.)
Henna is also used by naturalistas as a popular faux protein treatment. Many report stronger, thicker strands after
Stronger strands, less breakage, balanced porosity, shiny, long, flake-free hair, henna could be a great option.

Summer, Skin & Sunscreens The Do's & Don'ts for Warm Weather Maintenance for Skin of Color
For a lot of you, the cold weather had you trapped inside heavy clothing as well as your living quarters. Yearning for the day and time when you could release yourself from the throws of heavy wool sweaters, hats, gloves, boots and down coats, your body has been anxiously waiting to greet the sun, with all of its warmth. Now that summer is finally here and you're in the throws of warm and for some, down right Hot weather, do you have a skin care regimen in place for your beautiful bronze skin? It's important you know, a skin care regimen that is. Not only is caring for your face important, so is the rest of your body. The basic rules of caring for your facial skin, Cleanse, Moisturize and Exfoliate apply to your entire body, not just your face. Let's take a look!
Cleansers • When looking for Facial Cleansers, a good cream cleanser will work for all skin types. You want something that's gentle yet effective. Creams will remove dirt and grime from your skin without the irritation of soapy cleansers that will strip your skin of its natural oils. After all, a lot of soaps are detergent based. Even the ones that are advertised as "gentle" can still dry your skin out. • Body Cleansers can get away with the use of "gentle" soaps. In this category, the safest I've found is Castile soap. When you purchase it unscented, you can add essential oils, that are known to treat certain 14

body conditions such as dry skin. A lot of the dryness you experience is caused from dead skin cells, which leads me to the next step of a given regimen.
Exfoliation • Facial exfoliants such as jojoba wax beads are excellent for removing dead skin cells. With the massaging of a gentle hand, a cream based exfoliant with jojoba wax beads will sloth away dead skin cells leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth to touch. • Body exfoliation requires a bit more to remove the dead skin cells. It should still be gentle, however you can have a few more ingredients in the mix.
Sunscreen and SPF's for Skin of Color in Warmer Weather Your melanin rich skin comes with an automatic SPF 15, therefore, finding a sunscreen that has an SPF 15 or SPF 30 should give you enough coverage. Ok, Juliette, you keep talking about SPF, what does that mean? SPF stands for the Sun Protection Factor. It refers to the amount of time you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. Yes, you and your melanin can get sunburned.
Moisturize
In test done, it showed that if you burn after ten minutes in the sun, an SPF of 15 would allow you to be in the sun for up to 150 minutes without burning. Don't take this as a hard fast rule. You will have to test this rule and it's better to be on the safe side. You know the rule: less is more. In this case, it might be a good time to apply it. Less time in the sun, more protection for your skin.
• Facial Moisturizers add the umph to your skin. They help to lock in needed moisture, so that your skin will not have that dreaded dry, tight feeling.
For those of you with extremely fair skin, an SPF-70 is now available for your use. Tread waters lightly. The higher the SPF the more like paste it can feel.
• Body moisturizers will provide you with the same benefits as facial moisturizers, the difference being the formulation of ingredients. You can use Shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, and jojoba oil on your face. However, the formulation of ingredients can be used in greater concentrations for the skin on your body. Same body, yet two different textures.
Sunscreen Ingredients
Shea butter, turbinado sugar, sea salt and wonderful skin oils, will give you a body butter scrub that will have your skin feeling soft as a baby's bottom, not to mention providing it with a youthful glow.
The ingredients in sunscreens have been on the controversial side from day one, especially for natural ingredients folks, like a lot of you. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are physical UV filters that reflect or at least scatter UV radiation. They are generally non-irritating and can be ideal
for sensitive skin. However they often give your skin a greasy feeling. On the other side of the ingredient page there are chemical sunscreens such as oxybenzone, avobenzone and octovrylene. They absorb UV radiation and release energy as heat. This type of sunscreen may irritate your skin as well. There's a new technology involving plant olesomes that contain high SPF sunscreens without a greasy feel or irritation to your skin. Olesomes are natural emollients and contain Vitamin E that's found in oil bearing plant seeds such as safflowers, sunflowers and almonds. You can "test" (as in try it out, it "might" work) the use of one or two of these oils. Add 6-8 drops of lavender essential oil to 4 to 6 ounces of oil and use this as a natural sunscreen. It works for some, not for all.
Hydration and Warm Weather Care for Skin of Color It's been long established that you should drink half your body's weight in water. More than ever, during the spring and summer months when the sun is high and hot, you want to ward off dehydration. Not only is water your best friend, so are fruits and vegetables that are high in water content. Watermelons, honeydew, romaine lettuce, spinach and berries, just to name a few, are all foods that will enhance the hydration in your body. However, water is going to be the best hydrator you will ever find for your skin internally and externally. With all that being said, here are a few Do's and Don'ts for Summer Skin Care Maintenance • Do Exfoliate your skin with skin friendly products. Preferably jojoba wax beads in a cream base. Nut scrubs can often be irritating to your skin. • Don't apply pressure as if you're scrubbing a pot . • Do Moisturize your skin using products that will not leave a greasy feel on your skin. While oils and butters are a great addition to your product mix, if they don't penetrate into your skin, it's the wrong product for you. • Don't skip this step. Summer weather often gives your skin a naturally soft dewy feel after a shower or bath. You will still need to add a moisturizer to your body and face, just not as much. • Do drink lots of water, eat green leafy vegetables and water based fruits to keep you hydrated from within. • Don't drink coffee, wines, teas or sugar flavored drinks expecting this to count for liquid intake into our body. Liquid yes, hydration no. These drinks will dehydrate your skin. Now that you've got some idea of how to care for your skin as you expose more than you probably should, have fun in the sun and stay hydrated. Like what you've read? Share it with a friend! moisturized ensures that it won't be as sensitive to breakage, particularly where the demarcation line occurs, in between the natural and relaxed hair. Trim Off Ends
There has been some debate within the natural hair community, in regards to whether or not trimming your hair allows it to grow faster. While these claims have yet to be scientifically substantiated, trimming the ends of your hair will prevent your ends from breaking, and keep it looking healthy. Keep in mind, that you may need to trim more often, if you decide to grow your hair, as opposed to doing the big chop. You may have to experiment with different time frames that work for you, but in general, you should consider trimming every 6 weeks to 3 months. Wear Protective Hair Styles
Protective hairstyles are ideal because they help prevent you from doing a lot of manipulation to your hair. Long gone are the days when a protective hairstyle meant
How to Transition From Relaxed to Natural Hair Going from relaxed to natural can be a challenge, as it can be a arduous and long process. One can experience a myriad of emotions when it comes to this journey. Everything from your patience, to selfconfidence, will be tested along the way. However, if you can stick through the roughest parts, you will see that the results are truly worth it. If you follow these tips on how to transition from relaxed to natural hair, you may just become the envy of all of your friends.
year to grow your hair to the length that it once was. This can be frustrating, but above all taxing on the mind. Lastly, you may receive some negative comments from friends, and family members who disagree with you going natural. Many people have varying degrees of what they consider acceptable beauty standards. Consequently, you need to be mentally prepared to be able to handle the possible judgment and criticism.
Mental Preparation
Natural hair can be quite porous, and as a result, can be quite sensitive to breakage and dryness. To combat this, you need to nurture your locks with a lot of moisture. Make it a priority to do deep weekly conditioning treatments on your hair. When searching for the best products for natural hair, go for ones that specifically list "deep conditioning," or "moisturizing," on the label. Keeping your hair properly
Mental preparation is key during this journey. You are essentially starting from scratch, and you will need to get to know brand new hair. The methods that you once used for your relaxed mane, may not necessarily work for your new natural. Furthermore, you may also need to do the big chop. Even if you don't do the big chop, it could take upwards of one 16

that you were resigned to wearing buns and hats. You now have many, many options. Twist outs, braid outs, wigs, and up do's are all great examples of low maintenance, protective hairstyles. Braid outs and twist outs are great, in particular, because if done properly, you would only need to style your hair about once a week. Protective hairstyles are also beneficial because they can help you hide that dreaded demarcation line. It's important for you to be patient during this process. You are getting to know a new head of hair, and this may require new tools, techniques, and products. Be open to the experimental phase. You may want to quit, but try your best to stay strong. Most importantly, avoid comparing your hair to others, as no two head's of natural hair are alike. Natural hair is an exploration and journey of self-love. So remember to have fun along the way. eetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates group meetings around the world. Members are unified by a common interest, for practically any hobby or passion you may have. If your interest is hiking, politics, pets, wine events, golf clinics or, my favorite topic, natural hair, there’s a Meetup Group for that.
M
Meetup, Inc. is based in New York City – originally created after the September 11 attacks, to make it easier for people to connect with strangers in their community. Meetup, Inc. charges a small monthly fee to the administrator of the group, which in some cases, is passed on to the members who join their group and is often reflected as membership dues. Here at Curls, Twists, Coils & Kinks Magazine, our passion is curly, textured, natural hair. When I decided to write this article, I really had no idea that there were so many natural hair meetup
These groups meet with local men and women who choose to wear their hair in its natural state. They gather to commune and support one another in a positive non- judgmental setting. If you are an individual who has a perm, or chemically relaxed hair, you are welcome to join these groups, they only ask that you be open to learning about natural hair. Some of the topics or events you can expect at these gatherings are styling sessions, product swaps, hair care maintenance, natural hair events, giveaways, lunch and the politics of having natural hair. I found that each Meetup group manages their policies differently, if you decide to join a group, please be sure to read their specific policies as they vary. Meetup groups can be private or public and as previously mentioned, some may charge a membership fee or dues either monthly or annually. You will find that the membership fee is a bargain for what you potentially gain by participating in these groups. Membership covers website hosting, venue rental, food, supplies and expenses to run the group. In the pages to follow, I have created a natural hair Meetup directory. I hope this is helpful to those who are currently in the process of transitioning, considering transition, or for those who are already curlista’s and are looking for a place to gather with people where there is a common interest. I encourage you to find your Meetup group or create your own, they are fun and I cannot think of a better way to make some “Curlfriends”.

or your child’s unique blended hair texture- that is NOT the answer.
Moms that aren’t familiar with the uncertainty of kinky, curly hair make some pretty harsh judgement calls in the name of the unknown. We’ve even heard from a mother that resorted to slathering her child’s hair with Vaseline because she didn’t know what else to do. Put your hands in the air and slowly back away from the petroleum jelly. I can assure you, regardless of you
So what is the correct thing to do? First you’re going to have to spend some time getting acquainted with your hair. Expect the unexpected. Regardless of your ethnic background, hair literally has a mind of its own. After 5 years of following a fool-proof regimen, you may wake up one day with a head full of hair that is determined to remain completely defiant.

It happens. For a variety of reasons. Company’s change the recipes for their products, your hair may be responding to a lifestyle change, or it just may be one of those days. That’s why it’s important to always pay attention to the way your hair responds to every product you use and every maintenance technique you employ. If it’s not working anymore, don’t be afraid to move on.
2. Thou Shalt Love Thy Hair As It Is Before I offer any tips. I want to really beat this point into the ground. Often times, Caucasian mothers may experience a certain level of disappointment when their child’s hair pattern resembles the coarseness and kinks represented by some minorities. It’s likely due to that horrifying “unknown”. Blindly, the attempt to treat their child’s hair with the same products and techniques used to maintain their own – only to receive less than favorable results. Similarly, the fathers of these children often seek help with teaching the child’s mother how to take better care of their hair. Both parties may have a predetermined outcome in mind, only to find that the perfect image may not always manifest itself on their child’s head. Rather than expecting compliance on either end, it’s best to learn to love their hair as is. In reality, no one is 100% satisfied with their hair at all times. If your hair is thin, you probably wish it was thicker. People with thick hair pray for thinner hair. Curly haired people sometimes have straight hair envy. While straight haired individuals go to great lengths to achieve lush voluminous coils. Then there’s the “good hair” debate but that’s an entirely different discussion. The point is, the only way you can truly be satisfied with the outcome is to make peace with the “unknown”. It’s your hair, it’s permanently attached to your head and it isn’t going anywhere. The best thing for you to do is take a second look at the 1st commandment and move on. Note: If you are the parent of a multiracial child, or if you are a parent who may have adopted a child of another race with textured hair, it is extremely important that you do not express any ill thoughts or opinions in front of your
child. Self-confidence is key. Reiterate the beauty of being unique and patiently work together until you find your own secret recipe.
3. Thou Shalt Remember to Moisturize Caucasian hair has qualities that you will not find on an ethnic or biracial person. Caucasian hair is naturally oilier and the flat cuticles act as natural light reflectors, giving the hair a more visible shine. The kinks and coils found in ethnic blends are made from raised cuticles which naturally absorb light. Factor in the natural twists and coils of ethnic strands, the hair will appear to be dull. Resist the urge to pack on “grease” or petroleum based products by the handful because the hair isn’t shining as you think it should. Some hair just isn’t meant to. Instead, set aside the time to moisturize. Deep conditioners, protein treatments, and moisturizing shampoos and conditioners are the ideal way to keep your hair healthy. Maintaining adequate moisture – which also includes a healthy intake of water – guarantees that the hair retains the necessary elasticity to avoid damage. Deep conditioners should only be applied every 1-2 weeks but, depending on your styling options and daily activities, you’ll also need to add a good moisturizing spray or detangling product to your daily reserve.
4. Thou Shalt Invest In a Good Detangling Comb Wide tooth combs will soon become your new best friend. You have to respect the curl pattern and thickness of your mixed texture hair and fine tooth, rat tail combs are just plain old insult-
ing (and extremely painful). Damp or wet hair with conditioner is the easiest to manipulate when attempting to detangle. Remember, it is crucial that you prepare yourself, in advance, that it is going to take some time to properly comb through the hair and you have to be very gentle. Depending on the length and thickness of the hair, dividing it into at least four sections will make it easier to manage when combing. (The smaller the section, the easier it is to comb out…but the longer it will take to get finished. Time shouldn’t be the primary concern, maintaining a healthy head of hair is.) Using a wide tooth comb, start at the ends of the first section and slowly comb through, gradually making your way up to the root. Be sure to place your free hand near the base of the scalp, holding the hair in your hand to avoid pulling while you comb. When you’ve finally combed out that section, place it in a braid or twist to keep it from getting tangled while you work your way on to the next section.
5. Thou Shalt Not Over wash This is a commandment that you’ll truly have to define on your own. How often to wash biracial hair is not written in stone. If you’ve yet to find a suitable routine that agrees with your hair type, start by washing once a week and adjust as necessary. Winter months likely hold more oil in the hair while summer time may require more frequent washes. The most important factor in this is to avoid washing the hair too often. Typically, daily is just too much for the hair to handle. The oils that excrete from Caucasian strands requires daily washing but it’s rarely ever the case with textured blends. If you wash too much, you can dry the hair out to the point of dullness and

breakage. It may be necessary to wash more than once a week, but if it seems necessary more than a couple of times each week, then you’ll probably need to reconsider the products you’re using. Note: If activities like sweating or swimming make a wash absolutely necessary, you may opt to rinse with warm water and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. This way, you can clean the hair and save the shampoos for your scheduled washes.
6. Thou Shalt Read All Labels When working with textured blends of hair, you won’t be able to allow yourself to be hypnotized by catchy commercials and jingles. Quality ingredients are extremely important when it comes to maintaining any type of kinky, curly hair. Stay away from products that contain alcohol as they are the main cause for dry follicles. Avoid heavy oils or products that create build up and require more frequent washes. This means you’ll need to exercise a bit of trial and error when it comes to your shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, and detanglers. The discovery process can get a bit expensive, so I recommend reserving your experimental products for those times when you can catch a sale or get your hands on a couple coupons.
7. Thou Shalt Avoid Heat Whenever Possible If you don’t have to put your hair through the fryer, don’t. After washing your hair, use a towel to blot (don’t rub) it dry. Blotting and allowing it to air dry avoids tangling the hair or stripping it of its oils, exposing it to heat damage. If you absolutely, positively, can’t get around using heat, use it on a low setting, only applying 28

as much heat as absolutely necessary.
to care for the hair and give it time to breathe.
8. Thou Shalt Use Oil Sparingly
If you become lightheaded at the idea of attempting a corn roll or French braid, you should definitely spend some time getting acquainted with YouTube. Paying for a stylist every week may not be in your budget, and honestly, it doesn’t have to be. There are an infinite amount of how-to videos that take you through each step of styling. When you really get the hang of it, most of your styles won’t need to be covered in mousses and gels. If you do use them, again, stay away from ethyl and methyl alcohol. If you start to notice flakes, if the hair begins to look dull, or if it’s sticky to the touch, you may want to discontinue the use of that product.
To oil or not to oil, that is the question. Pointing your attention back to the first commandment, I’ll leave the answer to that question in your hands. Again, “biracial” is so general, it could mean a number of textures and needs. Some people’s hair may be fine and naturally oil, in which case added oil would be unnecessary. Other people may have drier hair that needs some extra moisturizing outside of your conditioners. In this case, I’d only say be careful about the types of oils you use. Try the water test to see how well it fairs. Oil should be light and easily absorbed, not heavy and sitting on top of the hair. When contemplating a product to use, try tilting the bottle in your hand. Watch to see how easily the oil moves around. If it flows to one side like water, it’s probably a good choice. Remember to read the labels in order to be sure. Stay away from beeswax and other thick pore cloggers. Light oils like coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, Argan oil, castor oil, and shea butter easily melt and nourish the hair.
9. Thou Shalt Be Versatile With Thy Styles Hair styling is but another major concern for those attempting to learn how to manage blended texture hair. Ponytails are usually the go-to option but, if worn too often, they may break off the hair, thin edges, and cause a mass of knots and tangles. Braids are an excellent protective style, versatile, and low maintenance. If left in for long periods and unmaintained, hair can still experience damage while braided, so it’s important to continue

10. Thou Shalt BeYou-tiful In my opinion, the beauty of all hair lies in its natural state. While everyone is free to express their right to do as they please, the best way to get your child to appreciate their hair is to allow them to wear it the way it grows out of their scalp. “Wash and Go’s” are so simple, anyone can do them. The only steps are clearly outlined in its name, just wash your hair and go about your business. You can also spend a little time, shaping your natural curl pattern using leave-in conditioner on damp hair. Take note of the natural shape and direction of the curls in detangled hair and coil them around your finger. Let the hair air dry and relish in your own natural beauty. You may not ace every step of this on your first attempt and that’s perfectly fine. As you and your hair build a better relationship, eventually detangling and deep conditioning your hair will become second nature.
SUMMER
MAKEUP TIPS BY SHAVONNA FINLEY
Summer is here and it is HOT! After the shower comes the sunscreen, but you still want to look put together when applying your beauty products. I believe that high temperatures call for a softer minimalist look. Shavonna Finley has been a specialist in makeup artistry & skin care for over 6 years. “Giving the gift of beauty feeds my soul and helping others be their own kind of beautiful is my greatest joy”! Shavonna gives us her recipe for achieving a fresh summer glow.
To achieve the minimalist look for summer...
Face: Start off with fresh clean & moisturized skin. I don't like anything heavy on my skin, so I start out with a sheer moisturizing concealer to cover up any imperfections, and then I top it off with my favorite BB Cream. Add a little bronzer & highlight powder and you're good to go! This will give you that fresh dewy glow that is perfect for summer!!! My Favorite's:
Skin Care Line- Boscia Concealer- MAC Mineralized Moisture Concealer BB Cream- Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector Bronzer- MAC Refined Golden Highlight Powder: MAC Mineralized hight powder in Soft 'n' Gentle
Eyes & Lips: For a simple but fresh summer eye & lip, I start off with a quick brow fill in, either with a pencil, powder, or brow defining gel. Then I lightly brush the lid with a gold or bronze eye shadow, followed by my favorite mascara! And just because its summer I love a pop of color, so I add a shade of green or purple to my lower lids with colored eyeliner. Then I top it all off with a beautiful coral gloss! My Favorite's:
Brows- Pencil- MAC Brow self-sharpening brow defining pencil Powder- Anastasia Beverly Hills Powder Duo Brow Defining Gel-MAC Prolong wear Waterproof Brow Set Eye shadow- MAC Eye shadow in Amber Lights or Wood winked Pop of Color Eyeliner- MAC Pearl glide Intense Liner in colors Undercurrent & Designer Purple Gloss- Revlon Super Lustrous gloss in the color Pango Peach

FEATURED SALON:
OWNER: Danielle Green
A
Kansas City native, Danielle grew up in the salon business, both of her parents were salon owners from the early 70's to late 90's. In 2011 she opened her first salon in Las Vegas, Nevada and has always catered to clients with curly hair. “Having curly hair myself, and continuing to educate myself in the industry I knew I had to continue on this journey of healthy hair services behind the chair.
While the services continue to change every season from trends to wearable styles I recommended curly cuts and natural hair styles. Within the past 5 years natural hair services and curly cuts have become regular requests compared to the quick weaves, jheri curls and relaxers from 2 decades ago. More and more men and women are embracing their radical textures and are no longer restricting or holding back on showcasing their natural texture.
Danielle says that today when a client walks through her doors they come in with the knowledge of knowing their hair type. Although relaxers are not as popular as they were in previous years, not every client of Radically Curly wants to embrace their textured hair. Radically Curly will provide hair relaxer service to clients that prefer that treatment. Hair extensions and weaves are considered a specialty service and most clients are natural and wear them only for protective styling. Approximately 80% of our clients have textured hair and that could include straight to wavy, curly, kinky, or crimped hair. Our philosophy is to embrace and rock the fabric of your hair and be Radically Curly. 30

vided wardrobe styling, fashion show production and creative directing services to many clients. The fact that she was so young intrigued many and proved beneficial as she attracted the freshest fashion designers, makeup artists, photographers, videographers, hair stylist and models to join her elite team. She has worked with up and coming designers like Herbert Victoria, Mabella Chic, Hipknoties as well as accepted invitations to work at Los Angeles Fashion Week. A year passed and Jenesis felt the need to branch out, specifically directing her energy toward making a difference in empowering women around the world through fashion. This is when Woman’s Touch Apparel was born. This bright, bold and fierce line has powerful messages of encouragement printed on trendy T-shirts for women of all ages and sizes. Soon after launching the clothing line, Jenesis focused on opportunities to give back to the community by co-founding a foundation called Brave Wings. Brave Wings is an annual fashion extravaganza showcasing emerging designers, talent and models with proceeds donated to a selected charity each year. The first annual fashion show was a huge success with proceeds donated to the Sojourner House, a shelter for domestic violence victims. Jenesis has traveled the world from, Europe to Asia, growing up in a loving military family. Jenesis recently became creative director of Vanity Branding, a new company focusing on the marketing of local artists and small businesses through the use of digital appearances and social media.
Woman's Touch Apparel was born in December 2013 and has already been featured on many leading women in the fashion and music industry. Jordin Sparks is wearing her line in her latest Double Tap music video, Beyoncé’s all female band, Rita Ora, Fantasia, and many more. Needless to say, Jenesis is working hard to grow her company, one of her goals is to have her line carried in more small boutiques around the world as well as increase her online footprint. When I asked Jenesis about her ultimate vision, she said “to empower women as well as help women entrepreneurs that are starting their own company”. Oh! Did I mention, she is not yet 21. Jenesis believes age is just a number, it does not define you nor is it a limitation of a person. Continuing on her path to success fueled with ambition and creativity, the only barrier to inhibit this journey is the one she creates for herself. It doesn’t look like Jenesis will be slowing down anytime soon, she is one to watch! Jenesis’ new line will drop in July, tickets are still available for her Brave Wings Fashion Show on July 18th where her new line will debut. Attanasio Financial Strategies Group Our Firm Many people, especially women, believe that their financial well-being is linked solely to their ability to earn a high income. True financial independence, however, has much more to do with understanding and taking advantage of the finances you have. It's more about setting financial goals and learning to use financial strategies that will help you meet your objectives. My goal as a financial professional is to help you plan for financial security. Whether your goals involve building wealth through investing, funding a child's college education, planning for a comfortable retirement, or protecting your estate, I can help you develop a roadmap to reach your goals and make wise decisions to help improve your financial situation. The process I follow in completing a total financial strategy consists of: 1. 2. 3.
Gathering and analyzing your financial situation to develop a clear picture of your specific needs, as sets, liabilities, and risk tolerance; Designing a financial strategy that takes into account the full range of needs you have now, and those needs you may have in the future; and Periodically reviewing your strategy, consulting with you to make appropriate adjustments, and assisting you in keeping your plan on track.
