Decarbonisation – the work starts here Hello and welcome back to Farnborough International for the second ITT Hub, and Logistics UK’s Future Logistics Conference 2022 for two days of discovery and debate. To plagiarise the well-known saying, a year is a long time in logistics, and so much has happened since we last convened in Farnborough to discuss decarbonising our sector. After all the razzmatazz of the COP26 Conference in Glasgow, and the announcement of the government’s own Net Zero Strategy, just over six months ago, our industry is now starting to lay the building blocks towards a zero-emission future. But much still needs to be confirmed if this is to be achieved by the government’s stated target of 2050. While the vans market seems to be adopting an electric option, I am looking forward to discussing alternative fuels options for HGVs with the OEMs on site. An effective network of refuelling or recharging stations must be rolled out nationwide, at pace, so that journeys are not hampered, and goods still arrive on time. Logistics UK has been working closely with government over the past year – and will continue to do so – to identify ways that operators can switch to a low carbon option without incurring prohibitive costs. Vehicle grants and subsidies need to be made available sooner rather than later, while access to Clean Air Zones, planned (and in some cases already implemented) across the country should not be prohibitively expensive for logistics vehicles: the economy will still need the goods which

6

our industry brings to them, and we must work together to find innovative ways to protect the supply chain and continue to deliver for UK PLC. There is still much to be done, and not much time in which to achieve it. As the only business group which represents the whole of the logistics industry, Logistics UK is proud to have assembled a line-up of market-leading, insightful speakers for this year’s Future Logistics Conference and I look forward to the discussions and challenges that their presentations bring to Farnborough, and to you. As we all work together towards a NetZero future, this year’s ITT Hub and Future Logistics Conference are ideally placed to provide the information and debate that we all need to drive our industry forwards. Have a wonderful visit! David Wells OBE, CEO, Logistics UK

National Grid Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time and the clock is ticking so we need to act now in all sectors. Transport accounts for just under a quarter of global CO2 emissions and still has an enormous impact too on air quality and hence health. Moving to electric, hydrogen and other forms of clean propulsion will make a huge difference. We can make that difference together. National Grid is poised, with our expertise in electricity and gas and with our infrastructure, to facilitate and help drive the successful transition to cleaner transport. We are committed to decarbonisation of our own business and to leading the transition for our communities and the economy as a whole. Let’s work together to have a clean energy network and net zero transport – it will take the power of all of us to really make a difference.

Western Power Distribution Serving the Midlands, South West and Wales, Western Power Distribution is actively engaged in preparing the network for the future, creating Distribution Future Energy Scenarios, the range of credible futures for the growth of the distribution network. As part of this, in 2020 it completed Net Zero South Wales, a collaborative project with Wales and West Utilities and Regen with funding from the Network Innovation Allowance programme. This project developed an integrated Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) study which covered both the electricity and gas distribution networks in South Wales. It also produces a Long Term Development Statement to assist current and future users of Western Power Distribution’s network to identify and assess opportunities available to them for making new or additional use of the distribution system. This includes an interactive online map showing where there is current grid growth capacity, within the existing network.

Strategic Partner Logistics UK In a constantly changing world, with so many disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK PLC. At Logistics UK, we are proud to be the only business group which represents the whole industry, as well as those who buy freight services, and this puts us at the heart of the debate over our industry’s future.

Zenobē Energy Zenobē Energy is partnering with us to provide charging facilities for the electric vehicles in the Demonstration Hub. Zenobē is an international EV fleet and battery storage specialist, headquartered in the UK with operations in Europe and Australasia. The company provides fleet electrification and battery storage services to fleet operators, power grid operators and large businesses. Zenobē’s Electric Transportation-as-a-Service (ETaaS) provides fleet operators and local authorities with a full solution for pay-per-month fee including battery replacement and award-winning software. By minimising upfront costs, Zenobē is removing the traditional barriers to electrification and boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. With c.800 electric vehicles contracted globally and c.25% market share of the UK bus sector, Zenobē is helping the sector drive towards a net-zero future.

10

Zenobē is also a pioneer in the second-life use of commercial vehicle batteries. Steven Meersman, Co-Founder and Director at Zenobē, says: “We are proud to be partnering with ITT Hub, an organisation that shares our passion for using electrification to enable a cleaner, greener future. Reuse is absolutely central to this. “At Zenobē we are dedicated to advancing battery applications with a particular focus on what happens to EV batteries at the end of their lives on vehicles. Our growing second-life battery operations solve this issue, as we reuse batteries from our electric fleets across Europe and close the loop. “As the world continues to drive towards its net-zero goal, Zenobē is committed to leading the charge towards a circular economy, embracing secondlife battery technology and championing its vast capabilities.” Steven Meersman, Co-Founder and Director,

Event Partners Zemo Partnership With Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 now enshrined in UK law, the decarbonisation agenda is going to dominate the discussion in transport (and many other areas of activity) for the next decade and beyond. As commercial vehicles, including vans, are responsible for around 40% of the UK’s GHG emissions from road transport, this sector is going to come even more into the decarbonisation spotlight. We work with all stakeholders, including many fleet operators, fuel and energy providers and truck OEMs, on activities to decarbonise freight. This year alone, we’ve published a new High Blend Renewable Fuels Guide and, to support this, a new Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme to give operators independent assurance that they’re purchasing sustainable, low carbon fuels. We’ve also updated our Retrofit Guide (linked to our joint – with EST - Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme) which provides operators with options for cutting locally polluting emissions, as we see a rise in the number of clean air zones and related measures.

REA The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) is the largest trade association of its kind in the United Kingdom. Over the last 20 years, the REA has expanded to cover all of the renewable energy and clean technologies in the country, divided into 14 forums, including Green Gas, Biomass Power, Electric Vehicles, Energy Storage, Finance, Innovation, Landfill Gas, Markets, Organics, Renewable Transport Fuels, Solar, Waste to Energy, Wood Heat, and work closely with our subsidiary, Renewable Energy Assurance Limited (REAL). The REA works with the transport industry extensively, with our EV Forum blossoming into a 75+ strong group of companies in the sector, and our work on renewable transport fuels has contributed to the current regulation and support schemes available to this industry. Decarbonising transport is an essential step in the path to net zero, and we support the pioneering work of companies in this sector, as they look to operate electric, biomethane and hydrogen vehicles to help reduce the carbon footprint of the UK’s vast transport network.

We hope to introduce the new ‘Freight Portal’ developed with EST (the Energy Saving Trust) at the Show providing interactive web-based tools signposting options to cut fleet costs and emissions. Zero emissions freight solutions are getting closer; fully electric trucks are now available in an increasing range of sizes and shapes and already an option for some. However, we need to use all the tools in the box to decarbonise our vehicles in the short, medium and long term. We’re looking forward to discussing many of these issues with you at the show!

The AA Alongside its breakdown and motoring services, the AA’s business services division plays a key role for firms, from driver training to supporting the switch to electric vehicle fleets. The AA is committed to ensuring that smaller businesses are not overlooked as they navigate the journey to EVs.

Transport for the South East Transport for the South East (TfSE) is one of seven subnational transport bodies in the UK – our purpose is to determine what investment is needed in the South East, to transform the transport system and drive economic growth. At the heart of this is our transport strategy, which sets out our partnership’s shared vision for a better connected, more prosperous and more sustainable South East. Launching our Freight, Logistics and Gateways Strategy We are excited to launch our ambitious Freight, Logistics and Gateways Strategy at this year’s ITT Hub event. This strategy highlights the vital importance

of the freight sector to the region and the action needed to drive the sector forward. Setting out the challenges that need to be tackled to enable the growth of the industry to keep up with the growing population and economy in a sustainable manner. It recognises the need for holistic investment and greater awareness of the needs of the sector amongst local authorities, particularly in planning for its future requirements. It also acknowledges the opportunity to harness new technology that would help meet the growing demand and reduce the negative impacts on road networks, residential areas and carbon emissions.

What’s next for TfSE? Later this year TfSE will go out to public consultation on our draft strategic investment plan (SIP). The SIP builds on the foundations of the transport strategy and brings together our technical program including our freight, logistics and gateways strategy, our future mobility strategy and our area studies to present a blueprint for future investment in strategic transport infrastructure in the south east over the next thirty years. Join Transport for the South East at the Energy Hub Theatre, 11.30am each day to hear about their Freight, Logistics and Gateways strategy or visit them at stand number 1529.

Zenobē Energy Zenobē Energy is ITT Hub’s charging partner, providing charging facilities for the electric vehicles in the Demonstration Hub. Providing fleet electrification and battery storage services to fleet operators, power grid operators and large businesses, Zenobē is an international EV fleet and battery storage specialist, headquartered in the UK with operations in Europe and Australasia.

Whether you operate coaches or buses, there are plenty of live issues right now. So an opportunity to connect face-to-face with the industry to get a real handle on what’s happening is very welcome. There’s nothing quite like a face-to-face conversation – or better still live updates ‘offline’ - with the chance to ask questions in person.

Coach and bus industry facility This dedicated area - hosted by the UK Coach Operators Association and Bus and Coach Buyer magazine - is where selected industry experts will be available to answer your questions on matters that are most pressing for operators. The lounge’s prominent location is next to the newly-expanded and rapidly-growing UK Coach Operators Association – making its return appearance.

Respond to Baroness Vere The government has invited all operators to have their say in the future ban on the sale of diesel PCVs. Transport Minister Baroness Vere has launched a ‘call for evidence’ and operators have until 21 May 2022 to make their response. Operators need to consider carefully their response. The Bus & Coach Hub is designed for operators to meet with industry experts and commentators to find out what the implications might be. This will provide operators with the information to be able to make a reasoned and cogent argument, with evidence, in their response to the consultation. Naturally, there is also the opportunity for networking about all aspects of the business.
