THE GOLD STANDARD

THE SPOTSWOOD COURSE

WELCOME TO THE GOLD, GREEN, AND SPOTSWOOD COURSES OF GOLDEN HORSESHOE GOLF CLUB. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Rees Jones, award winning golf is alive and well at Colonial Williamsburg Resorts. No other golf club perfectly blends the experience of tournament ready golf with the soul-stirring backdrop of the 18th century.

If you’re looking for a nine-hole, short course, you’ll love the Spotswood Course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., this par-31 course is a great test of your short-game skills. Perfect for networking or a quick golf getaway, this course is an updated version of the original 1947 Williamsburg Inn course.

Free from any bordering residential development, the courses — Gold, Green, and nine-hole short course Spotswood — are surrounded by mature forest and ravines. The crown jewel in Williamsburg golf, the Gold Course, recently restored by the “Open Doctor” Rees Jones, still carries the original design of creator Robert Trent Jones Sr. with one of the finest collection of par threes in the country.

Called the “best short nine-hole course in the country” by Golf Magazine, the course includes six par-3 holes, plus two par-4s and one par-5 to test your entire game. Spotswood is family-friendly and fun for beginners and juniors, but still presents a signature Jones challenge for the more experienced golfer. Just minutes from more — including spa services, accommodations, dining, and the Historic Area — the Spotswood Course is the ideal addition to any itinerary in Williamsburg.

Rees took his father’s lead in designing the Green Course to provide tournament ready golf that is also fun for resort guests and members. Taking advantage of the topography of rolling fairways carved from majestic woodlands to large green sites, the course offers what all great venues should: a spectacular setting that is as great a test from the championship tees as it is playable from the forward tees.

Par from the championship tees is 71 and it plays over 6,817 yards. Seven holes pose water hazards. The longest hole, the par-5 15th, measures 634 yards from the championship tee. The shortest hole, the par-3 16th, plays without fairway to an island green.

“A great golf course is a superb blend of shot values and an artistic flow of lines. The Golden Horseshoe Gold Course is more. It is a natural arboretum upon which a great golf course has been built. The result is overall perfection.” — Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Offering fairways and rough carved from 250 acres of mature woodland, the Green Course is 71 and plays 7,120 yards from the championship tees. Water comes into play on six holes, two played over water and four with lateral hazards.

“The real quality of this course is in its framing. It’s very rugged land, a pure virgin timberland of huge trees, primarily beech, oak and pines. The course defines the shot, but gives the player several options. It’s a shot-maker’s course.” — Rees Jones
