ADVOCATE
CWHBA’s 3-Tiered approach to Advocacy benefits all members!
It’s a Large Area, But We’re On It! The First Thing To Know is that YOUR EYES AND EARS make the difference! What’s going on in your area? Is there a current or up and coming issue that is of concern to you at the local level? Who’s running and who’s not running in your area this year? If you identify specific issues, or even hear rumblings of things that might impact the industry, please let us know. You can email Mike Howe at mhowe@cwhba.org anytime.

CWHBA’s Government Affairs focus is primarily at the local level, and that in and of itself can seem daunting at times. Additionally, CWHBA works closely with our statewide association, the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) on state issues, and with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) on federal issues. There are plenty of issues at all levels to keep everyone busy on and on their toes.
“Open Mic” is Now Official Did you miss Mike’s first “Open Mic” interview with State Representative David Taylor? Scroll down for the archived link/video to check it out. What did he say about the Hirst Fix, Yakima Water Basin, Okanogan water issues, the future of water issues? The answers are all in the video. That was just the first of a regular series of “Open Mic” programs. CWHBA is pleased to present “Open Mic”, hosted by CWHBA’s Government Affairs Director (and former radio host) Michael Howe. That’s right, on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 8am, Mike will be putting his prior radio host skills to test when he sits down with an important elected official or policy maker each month to talk about issues important to you. Ok, enough scrolling – here’s the first “Open Mic” with State Representative David Taylor as the guest:
https://youtu.be/8xMknB_fJ4E
You didn’t know Mike was a former radio host? That’s right, he was. Mike hosted a weekly political talk show syndicated on 4 stations in Western Washington from 2011-2017 and co-hosted a similar program in Colorado from 2005-2008. You might even recognize some of his guests: Vice President Dick Cheney, Teamsters President James Hoffa, Dan Rather, John Stossel, US Senator Alan Simpson, Dinesh D’Souza, and more….
Now, if you want to be a part of the next one and ask your own questions you can. Because this is an online video program (in a webinar format), you will be able to submit questions real time through an online chat, but only if you are there live too! You’ll want to read your CWHBA emails to see who each month’s guest will be, and we are certain you won’t be disappointed. Included in the information will be a web link so you can watch and participate. Click Here to join May’s program on Wednesday, May 16th at 8:00am (guest TBA). Go ahead and mark your calendars right now for the Third Wednesday of each month at 8 am and join us for Open Mic.

Money in Politics – It’s Not All Bad
With the 2018 election season upon us, let’s take a few minutes to learn about the Affordable Housing Council of the CWHBA (AHCCW), CWHBA’s Political Action Committee. Before we dive in though, consider this: - In 2018, the CWHBA territory will have 6 County Commission seats up for election or re-election, potentially 3 Port positions (if the Kittitas Port District is approved), and state legislative races. - In 2019, a campaign season that kicks off in about 9 months, each of the 6 coun ties, 46 cities and towns, and many smaller political subdivisions (Ports, School Districts, and more) will have multiple seats up for election/re-election. The Governmental Affairs Department works closely with local, state and federal elected officials on issues vital to our members’ livelihood. Forging and nurturing positive relationship with our elected officials and policymakers is essential for our association and its effectiveness on the political front. Through these efforts we can identify those politicians who are willing to listen to our issues and consider our point of view. This is where AHCCW becomes invaluable.
What is the AHCCW? In short, AHCCW is the PAC (Political Action Committee) of the Central Washington Home Builder’s Association. AHCCW supports our endorsed candidates and ballot measures that grow the building industry. AHCCW aggressively participates in the legislative and regulatory process. Our influence is made possible through individual donations. It is paramount we support elected officials who champion, property rights, healthy economic development, and free enterprise. Your contributions are focused on critical issues. The best way to impact your destiny is to be involved.
Why is AHCCW important? AHCCW represents the recognition by our members that those elected into office are critical to the housing and development industry. Through generous contributions we can fund the best qualified and most worthy candidates for office.
4
With the CWHBA territory covering 6 counties, 46 cities and towns, 5 state legislative districts, and a plethora of other taxing and regulatory political subdivisions (Ports, PUDs, School Districts, etc…), there are many elected—
positions that can impact the homebuilding industry. AHCCW empowers our members to help shape the political environment and elect candidates who will support our industry’s goal to provide citizens the opportunity to realize the dream of homeownership. Changes in local codes, local planning, state law or regulations, and more could be detrimental to your business. Your contribution to AHCCW is an investment in your company’s future and the future of our industry. It is one of the most affordable options for political involvement.
Is AHCCW politically neutral? AHCCW is not affiliated with a specific political party. AHCCW supports candidates who recognize the importance of the home building industry. It should also be noted that not all local races (such as city/town council races) are party races. AHCCW also supports issue specific campaigns when appropriate.
How are funds raised for the AHCCW? The AHCCW raises the funds needed to support local and state candidates who support the housing industry through voluntary contributions from CWHBA members. Voluntary contributions can be made at any time. Through your contribution, we can pool our resources and unite to support the best qualified, pro-housing candidates for elected office.
Who are the trustees of the AHCCW? A trustee is anyone who has donated a minimum of $40 for the year. How are decisions about endorsements and funding made? Trustees meet a minimum of 3 times per year and as needed. During the election season, trustees in attendance will review candidates for public office and makes decisions to provide financial support to those elected officials who understand and appreciate the impact the home building industry has on the central Washington economy.
Please support the government affairs efforts of the CWHBA by continuing your support of the AHCCW! Michael Howe Government Affairs Director Central Washington Home Builders Association mhowe@cwhba.org Office: 509-454-4006 Cell: 360-912-2805

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It, Hear What Other Members Are Saying… BIAW’s R.O.I.I is the State’s oldest and largest retro group. Because of that, they have a team with vast experience. That “vast experience” has been invaluable to our company. It has aided in supplying us literature for our safety manual and meetings, a representative has personally stopped by to educate us, when one of our plumbers got hurt they assisted in our navigating through the system and best of all is the R.O.I.I. return! Renée Harnack I www.afterhoursplumbing.com We have been a member of the ROII program for the last 10 years. It has proven to be a valuable tool in our safety program. -CWHBA IS PROUD TO SPONSOR AND SUPPORTPIZZA, POP, AND POWER TOOLS
May 8, 2018 8:00 AM - 2:00PM @ Wenatchee Valley College
Pizza, Pop, and Power Tools is a hands-on career exploration event for 8th grade girls in
the Wenatchee School District. Girls get to weld, operate heavy equipment, power tools and machining equipment, participate in a tire tire rotation rodeo, try on fire fighting turn out gear and scale a 30’ power pole with Chelan PUD.
The goal of the event is to help girls explore a variety of non-traditional careers for women. Through the involvement of female role models and skilled professional, students gain confidence that could lead them to enroll in a high school career and technical education class such as construction trades and welding or pursue post secondary vocational training or an apprenticeship program. CWHBA will be helping out with the construction portion of the event. How Can You Help? We are looking for volunteers to help with construction activities for Pizza, Pop, and Power Tools. We understand getting kids interested in the industry will provide the future workforce and we need your help to create an interactive experience that peaks their interest to say—I WANT TO DO THAT! Please contact Carly at cfaul@cwhba.org or 509.952.3528 to get involved.
