Executive Officer’s Message

EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S MESSAGE As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I have been reflecting on what I am thankful for. Growing up we held the tradition to go around at the dinner table to say what we were thankful for. I’d anxiously wait my turn thinking of something different than what was already said and then when my time would come I’d default to “family”.

Today, I still answer the same way, though not as a default. I am thankful for my family. Upon starting at CWHBA last year, it didn’t take long for me to see our membership as family. The generosity and kindness you extend towards the association and to one another is remarkable. During our season of transition, I am so grateful for those who have reached out - offering words of encouragement and taking action by stepping up to do what was needed. In 2020 you will see new faces in our family - Cheryl Nelson and Jake Mayson. Cheryl resides in Chelan and is our Member Services Director managing the upper counties of Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan. Jake is our new Government Affairs Director and is looking forward to working with our members and the AHCCW/PAC making sure our unified voice is being heard locally and on a state level. I hope that you join us December 10th at the State Fair Park Room in the SunDome for our annual Board Installation & Awards Dinner. It will be a fun-filled evening celebrating the year and hearing what’s on the horizon for us. We at CWHBA are so thankful for you. We wish you and yours a very blessed holiday season and healthy new year!

Primo Villalobos is a metal artist who has been creating artistic and functional metal designs with his business, Metal & Iron Artistry, for 19 years. We sat down at his workshop in Granger one beautiful, crisp October morning to talk about how he got started. Metal has been in Primo’s hands since he was young. For many years he paid the bills working for the sheet metal union, but when 9/11 happened, everything changed for him. There wasn’t work for many of those in his union and he was laid off. That same year, some long-time friends of Primo’s, Mark and Jeanie Stephen, owners of Cowiche Creek Nursery, called and asked if he could create some metal baskets for them to sell at their nursery. “I had no money,” he recalls, “So I went to one of the hop growers I knew, Tom Carpenter of Carpenter Ranches, LLC, and asked if I could buy a few spools of wire to make some baskets to start a business. He said, ‘If you’re going to start a business then take as many as you want. If you need a tractor to stretch the wire, then there’s a tractor. If you need a driver to drive the tractor, then just tell one of the guys.’” Primo got to work in his own backyard and cut down a tree to create enough room to work. For three years, he primarily created baskets for Cowiche Creek Nursery. Eventually word got out, and he picked up clients in Hood River 14

Member Spotlight and received requests for custom products from other companies in Yakima. These days, Metal & Iron Artistry is well known for metal gate and fence fabrication. Primo moved into this sector when a local doctor was looking for someone to design a custom gate for him and heard about Primo’s reputation as a skilled metal worker. He invited Primo to come out to the site to design the gate for his new home, and after that the business really took off in a new direction. Primo’s home in Granger displays different iron and metal fence samples around the perimeter, as well as large metal planter baskets and other yard art as examples of the many things he can create. “Every project has a part of me,” Primo says. “When I work on a big project, I don’t feel like I’m selling it because I need the money. When I make something, I get attached to it. I spend so many hours working on something that sometimes I don’t want to let it go. Its artwork, its not just a fence to me. Every project has a lot of time put into it and you feel it.” For more information, and to view more samples of his work, visit https://primoartisan.com/
