Compliance Date for Silica Rule Begins Oct. 1st are you Ready? On April 23, 2018, the state’s Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) concluded their version of the Crystalline Silica rule. Employers must comply with obligations of this rule by October 1, 2018. The rule applies to all occupational exposures to respirable crystalline silica, except for the following: • Where employee exposure results from the processing of sorptive clays. • Where documented objective data demonstrate that employee exposures to respirable crystalline silica will remain below 25 micrograms per cubic meter of air as an 8-hour time-weighted average under any foreseeable conditions. The standard requires employers to limit worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica and to take other steps to protect workers. Employers can use a control method laid out in Table 1 of WAC 296-840 found here. For more information, visit L&I’s website or contact Al Audette at BIAW at 360-352-7800 ext. 105.

CWHBA’s Education Program offers a wide range of options!
Building The Future
CWHBA AND BIAW AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS PURSUING FURTHER EDUCATION IN THE HOME BUILDING INDUSTRY CWHBA is proud to announce that Greyson Fields is the recipient of the CWHBA Scholarship and the Cliff Tanasse Scholarship. Greyson is a graduate of Okanogan high school and is currently attending the University of Washington pursuing a degree in Construction Management. Greyson’s passion for building started in the seventh grade. In 2015 he had the opportunity to help build a home for a family whose home had been scorched by the Okanogan Complex Fire. “not only was I able to learn on the job, I felt like I was helping the family rebuild a piece of their heart they had lost, with their home. Ever since then, I have been working during the summers with local general contractors. This experience combined with my interest in business, math and physics convinced me that I should pursue UW’s construction Management major.” CWHBA is proud to see that Greyson embodies the intention of the Cliff Tanasse Scholarship. The endowment was created to honor late member and top CWHBA Spike, Cliff Tanasse. Cliff was very involved in the Association and had a great respect for the building industry. He was a member of the Remodelers Council and was also instrumental in the Toy Building Project, which was an event where Remodeler Council members joined together to build wooden toys which were then donated to the local ‘Toys for Tots’. Cliff continued being involved in the Toy Building Project even after he retired. His biggest passion was building membership for the Association and during his tenure as a member, amassed several hundred new members. Greyson shared that “Being a construction manager will allow me to be with my family, balancing work and life equally. Even though I will have to start at an entry level position, I am exited to challenge myself and work my way to the top of a company. Being a construction manager won’t be a job or work for me. It will be a passion, something I have been searching to find and construction management has ended my search.” CWHBA understand the intrinsic need of a sustained workforce in the industry and continues to offer early scholarships and participates in supporting local programs to educate students about the career opportunities available. We wish Greyson the best in his studies and future career.
Congratulations to the BIAW Scholarship recipients. Greyson also received a BIAW Scholarship for $2,000 Sage Francois: $750 Central Washington University Construction Management

BIAW Launches Certified Builder Designation In June, BIAW officially launched a new designation that breaks ground within the home building industry. BIAW’s Certified Builder program creates a way to recognize and designate achievement to those in the industry whose work experience and business practices exceed state standards. The unique nature of this new designation will quickly become the gold standard in Washington. It proves that the Certified Builder measures up, cares about their work and customers, and strives every day to do their very best. The main goal in creating the Certified Builder designation is to showcase the skills, services and business practices that are truly needed to build a better place for Washingtonians to call home. Knowing who reaches higher helps the customer make a more informed choice, which in turn creates a more powerful designation.
Why Become a Certified Builder? Greater Value
Certified Builders choose to offer more. Each applicant is fully vetted during the process, ensuring they meet or exceed the comprehensive standards developed to become a Certified Builder. BIAW performs rigorous reviews of experience, past work performance, and inquires about vendor relationships. They insist on comprehensive warranties, contracts, and higher insurance thresholds.
Measure Up
It is an intentional choice to showcase better builders and then promote them to the public. Since the consumer today has more power than ever to accept or reject who they choose to buy from, BIAW knows that it is in the builder’s best interest to educate the public about what better standards mean to them. That creates more value for this designation than any other program developed for builders.
Raise the Bar
If you’re willing to conduct your business by exceeding state standards, you can earn this designation. Experience matters. As part of the program, everyone agrees to conduct themselves and their business at the highest standards to maintain Certified Builder status so there is built-in accountability.
The Message
BIAW will assist builders with marketing their designation to current and potential customers by sharing (at no additional cost) an unprecedented source of branded marketing materials. These include designed templates for each Certified Builder and appropriate style guides for using the logo, materials, photos, and message. This way, consumers see consistency, which makes the designation easier to connect with, which in turn translates to integrity and strength. Certified Builders will also receive extra educational opportunities, offered at a discount as well as dedicated staff to help. When the best get recognized, better becomes the new standard. The Certified Builder designation not only creates value within our membership but also for the entire industry. For more information or to see a current list of BIAW Certified Builders, go to www.biawcertifiedbuilder.com

This year the planning committee has selected the YV-Tech Carpentry/ Construction program as their charity. They will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets on one of the holes and just before dinner. Let’s show them our CWHBA support by coming prepared to provide additional funds to assist in the training of new builders for this community. Also, be sure to introduce yourself to the new YV-Tech Director, Dennis Matson! Still want to join in the fun? We are looking for additional raffle items to add for the event to raise money to support a local construction trade training program. Donating items from your business creates great member-to-member visibility and support of the building trades! Please fill out the ATTACHED FORM HERE with your items or contact Chelsea Snodgrass at csnodgrass@cwhba.org for more information. 16
