A letter from our President
A MESSAGE FROM 2019 CWHBA BOARD PRESIDENT CLINT ADAMSON I’ve learned as a builder and most recently the President of our Central Washington Home Builders Association that you never stop learning. One thing I learned attending this year’s IBS Conference in Southern Nevada: after two snow days in Vegas - Yakima really is the Palm Springs of Washington after all … IBS is the NAHB’s annual International Builders Show, and this year we gathered in Las Vegas to celebrate its 75th anniversary! We had a good contingent of CWHBA members and leadership who joined me there along with more than 100,000 people attending Design & Construction Week®. There were more than 1,500 exhibitors at this massive event, and we all had opportunities to see first-hand the latest in-home building products. We also had the opportunity to attend sixteen “IBS LIVE” learning programs that looked at major trends in design, construction techniques, sales, and products expected to take place over the next five years. We learned about “iBuying”, Housing uses for 3D Printing, and even Smart neighborhoods and new technologies that are revolutionizing home construction. Our contingent came away from the experience having learned much, shared much, and ready to bring some new developments to our region. In mid-March I’ll be leading a contingent of our CWHBA board and staff members to the BIAW Board of Directors meeting in Olympia. In addition to taking advantage of new organizational learning tools around our industry and state such as 55+ home building opportunities, BuiltGreen®, and under 40 home builders – we’ll engage in our legislative efforts with the BIAW. One evening just before the Board meeting, we will join our BIAW and legislators at our annual reception at the Hotel RL to help create a business and builder-friendly State for our State government leaders to aspire to. My thanks to you and to all my colleagues who’ve joined me on these travels, worked on our issues, and who have helped me to bring our message and the value of our organization to others from far and wide. I’m as excited as ever to continue improving our “product” and bringing great value to your CWHBA membership that we welcome so much. Clint J. Adamson Pleasant Ridge Construction CWHBA President

Executive Officer’s Message
ONE THING: BRING SPRING! The snows of February will soon give way to the warming trends of March – and not a day too soon for all. It has been a very busy time at the CWHBA – both at the Board and Staff levels – and we are ready for one of our biggest and best months of the year! March brings our annual Home and Garden Show to the forefront, and this year’s event will be one of the best ever. With a theme of “Deconstructed” and a focus on all the many things that go in to building a home, Chelsea Snodgrass and crew have a fun, full, and entertaining event for all. Whether you are interested in buying a new home, remodeling an existing home, or simply looking for a great day of inexpensive entertainment – this is a weekend you won’t want to miss. So c’mon down and see us March 8-10 at the Sundome for the fun and education! February was a busy month for educational programs at CWHBA – and March provides three more classes in Wenatchee, Ellensburg, and Yakima respectively for our membership’s benefit. CPR, L&I Compliance, and Best workplace safety practices are on tap in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to the Punchlist and CWHBA event emails for more information, or contact us directly (rschroeter@cwhba.org) if you’d like to take part in any of those programs. Our new Membership Director, Emily Jameson, has been contacting new and renewing members all over our region and March begins her outreach in Kittitas, Douglas and Chelan counties. In addition to hosting our first Hard Hat Happy Hour of 2019 at our Wenatchee office, Emily is planning the next one already for Omak in June and Cle Elum/Roslyn, and Yakima for the rest of the year. These will be excellent opportunities to network, enjoy food and libations, and briefly hear of developments in ROII Select®, Government Affairs, and other news of note to our valued members. Our CWHBA team remains committed to being active on your behalf, engaged on issues that matter to you, and providing the best value we can to our incredible members. Thank you as always for your support and enjoy our Spring opening to a productive and successful 2019!

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE Our thanks to each of you for keeping us informed on the issues affecting home building in your areas. We remain engaged in water, zoning, building code changes, fee/cost, and affordable housing issues throughout our 6-county footprint. We also look forward to joining our state’s HBAs in Olympia on March 11, 2019 to help ensure that legislators hear about the issues that assist and stunt our growth as an industry in this State. We know that when the housing market is healthy, and home building is on the move, our economy is healthy and on the move. Here’s some more GA related news from around our region:

February was National Heart Health Month and to promote awareness, we hosted three CPR/First Aid classes. By having our members certified, they not only bring safety to their companies but also to their surrounding communities. Congratulations to all our CPR/First Aid class participants for getting certified this month! If you would like more information on getting CPR/First Aid certified contact Ashley Ferreira at aferreira@cwhba.org or 509-454-4006.
Here are 4 reasons why you should get CPR Certified: 1) Anyone can learn CPR - In event of an emergency, many people feel helpless to act because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has lapsed. One class gives you two years of certification to help save lives. 2) Add to your personal and professional value - Many businesses now require at least one employee to be CPR certified to be in health and safety compliance. Those who devote the necessary time and resources to understand how to conduct this procedure can add another skill to their portfolio. 3) Peace of mind - Thinking through the simple steps of CPR you learned in class will help you mentally prepare to act if a real emergency occurs. Knowledge is power and will give you peace of mind no matter what stage of life you are in. 4) It could happen to anyone - Generally, more than 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest happen in homes. If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, it could very well be on someone you love. Be the difference for your parent, spouse, or child. Learn CPR/First Aid and gain the confidence in knowing that if you are ever needed, you too can save a life! 15
Meet the Instructor
We are excited to introduce our CPR/First Aid class instructor Pattie Hendrickson! Pattie is a Senior Instructor and AHA Faculty Instructor at American First Aid and CPR. She pulls real life experience from being a Decorated Firefighter for 6 years and Retired Nurse for 16 years. Pattie brings the benefit of her varied experience, her emergency service, and her sense of humor to her classes which provides not only diverse information but makes her classes fun and interesting for the everyone.
We asked Pattie, “Why do you think it’s important to be CPR certified?” “There has been a decline in accessible homecare, and we have to take care of ourselves. It’s important because there is more population than EMS help and the more you can do before they get there the better.” Pattie let us know that in the past 15 years they have certified over 12,500 Yakima locals in CPR and First Aid! Previously, 2 out of 10 emergency calls had CPR in progress. Their mission is to educate the general population more knowledgeable and lowering their fear of acting in emergency situations. Now, 8 out of 10 emergency calls have CPR in progress! Pattie’s clinical background enables her to bring technical First Aid & CPR training to a general understanding of the human body and relay it all in a manner that is easier to understand. She is a dedicated, principled professional with integrity and a great love for her fellow human beings. Her passion to help others is obvious to anyone who takes her class.

CWHBA EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
“Comply and Fly High”: LNI Construction & Electrical Compliance Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Noon - 2:00 pm $10/person YAKIMA CWHBA OFFICE 3301 W. Nob Hill Boulevard Yakima, WA 98902 To register, contact: Ashley Ferreira: aferreira@cwhba.org or call 509-454-4006 When LNI comes to call, it can feel like you just got pulled over for speeding in a foreign country. It’s often hard to know what they’re looking for, and what you need to do to be in compliance and avoid penalties. We at the CWHBA are pleased to be joined by LNI Construction Safety Inspector Marco Campos as well as a member of LNI’s Electrical Compliance Team. Marco will share his process and what he’s looking for in a compliant business. We’ll also hear about what the major areas are that they see for construction non-compliance, as well as how you can address non-compliance if it happens at your job site or work. Lunch will be served as part of the program fee.
