METRO ATLANTA Sandy Springs Festival and Other Events The 27th Anniversary Sandy Springs Festival will take place September 22-23. Features of the Festival will include the Doug Kessler Sandy Springs Lightning 5K/10K race, a Juried Artist’s Market, Business and Civic Expo, a Children’s Park and Teen Territory, Kiwanis Pet Parade, Heritage Education Area, live entertainment, food court, and more. The Sandy Springs Festival is the primary fundraiser for Heritage Sandy Springs, a non-profit organization that operates Heritage Green, a four-acre city park; there the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum in an 1869 farmhouse houses two traveling exhibits and a permanent exhibit which documents the history of the community. The Sandy Springs Festival will be held at Heritage Green, 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, next to City Walk/ surrounding area. Festival hours: Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 11am-5pm. METRO ATLANTA Scott Antique Market in Atlanta The Scott Antique Market at the Atlanta Expo Centers, the world’s largest monthly indoor antique show, features two buildings stocked full of pretty much every antique imaginable. With 366,000 square feet to explore, and over 3,300 booths, it’s almost impossible to leave without finding exactly what you’re looking for, according to the show’s organizers. All things antique wind up at the Scott Antique Market-antique furniture, vintage hardware, rare art, stunning glassware, heirloom silver, incredible jewelry, and so much more. The Scott Antique Market, described as “America’s favorite treasure hunt,” always takes place the second weekend of every month at the Atlanta Expo Centers which straddle I-285 at Exit 55. METRO ATLANTA Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 90 pieces of retired railway rolling stock; some pieces, including the Presidential Car Superb, are over 100 years old. There are vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, a WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars, baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of way equipment. The museum is home to MARTA’s historic bus fleet and buses from many of the predecessor systems to MARTA. Special events will include the Boy Scout Merit Badge Clinic on Sept. 22 and Model Railroad Days on Nov. 10-11. Train or Treat will be held at the museum on Saturday, Oct. 27 and will feature costume contests at noon and 4pm, a craft activity, trick or treating, wagon rides, and story time. The railway museum, located at 3595 Buford Highway in Duluth, is open from September through December Thursday through Saturday and selected Sundays from 10am-5pm. METRO ATLANTA Fall Jonquil Festival in Smyrna The City of Smyrna will hold its Fall Jonquil Festival on October 27-28 on the downtown Village Green next to Market Village. The festival will feature more than 175 handmade arts and crafts booths, a wide selection of festival foods, a Fresh Harvest Market, a Kids’ Zone, live entertainment, Master Puppeteer Peter Hart, and Scott Thompson with acoustic music at the Veterans Memorial. At the Artist Market artisans from all over the Southeast will have handmade crafts, paintings, clothing, furniture, jewelry, and more. Festival foods will include cotton candy, candy apples, corn dogs, hand-dipped ice cream, snow cones, polish sausage, chicken sandwiches, and BBQ. Sporting Events Southern Pirate Festival at Port Columbus The Southern Pirate Festival will be held Saturday, October 20, at the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus. Activities will include kids’ activities and games, live cannon firing, demonstrations, music and live entertainment including the Billy Bones’ Pirate Show. In the museum proper, explore naval operations during the Civil War through displays of uniforms, artillery, firearms, personal effects, flags, 19th century ship murals, a timeline exhibit of the war at sea, the remains of an ironclad gunboat, ship replicas, and much more. Sporting Events Wings & Wheels Car, Truck, & Motorcycle Show in Warner Robins See a $5 million display of 250 antique, classic, and custom vehicles on Saturday, October 13, at the Museum of Aviation’s 20th Annual Wings and Wheels Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show. Strap yourself in and enjoy a ride around the Museum’s beautiful 51-acre site in the Extreme Team “Savage” 600-horsepower monster truck, and “Cruise to the Oldies” with disc jockey Tommy Landrum. Spectators will enjoy a fun-filled day which includes battery-operated Kiddie Car “Runway Races,” Georgia’s Dance Explosion Cloggers, food concessions, and a large model airplane display. Any year vehicle is welcome. Early registration is $20 and $25 after Oct. 5. Cars can register the day of the show from 8-11:30am. The show will be free to the public from 9am-5pm. Manchester Railroad Days Railroad Days 2012 will be held in Manchester on Saturday, October 20, in the old Cotton Mill on GA 85E between Atlanta and Columbus. There will be vendors of railroadiana and memorabilia, and the model train section of the show is also being expanded. Train artifacts, pictures, and books can be found at the show from 9am-4pm.; admission will be $2 with children under 12 free. Also on Saturday a Rotary Club car show will be held at Sledge Automotives on GA 85E; food will be available. A reception on Friday night, October 19, will be held in the Manchester Community Building on Second Avenue from 6-9pm and will feature good food and entertaining railroad slides, stories, and speakers; admission will be free. Sporting Events Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga Several excursions are offered on the Tennessee Valley Railroad in Chattanooga from the Grand Junction Station. The Chickamauga Turn is a six hour roundtrip ride to Chickamauga, GA. The Eerie Express from Oct. 12-27 features storytelling and a tour through the Eerie Fun House and a bag of treats. The Summerville Steam is an all day excursion to Summerville, GA during autumn with dinner onboard on the second Saturday nights. The Hiwassee River Rail Adventure covers 50 miles of breathtaking views paralleling the scenic Hiwassee River. At the Loop, the tracks corkscrew over themselves as they climb the mountain near Farner, TN. Entertainment Venues in Georgia Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival The onset of fall in Augusta will bring excitement as people await the event that kicks off Augusta’s arts season: the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival, scheduled this year for September 14-16. Each year, a juried show of fine arts and crafts is showcased, while ethnic groups from all over Augusta tempt festival goers with scrumptious and authentically prepared regional cuisines. Over 100 artisans, 35 ethnic groups, and hundreds of performers will lend their talents to the festival. Included will be wood workers, glass smiths, jewelry makers, dancers, singers, poets, painters, and more! Additionally, there will be a beer garden featuring craft beers and a free hands-on area for kids. The festival is located on Broad Street, delightfully shaded by buildings and trees. Germany will be the featured country this year, and Channelheimer’s Oompah Band will be leading the crowd in traditional German favorites. Finally, the highly anticipated closing concert will be performed by Atlanta’s own band of beautiful young sirens, von Grey. P Theatre P Music P Dance P Swamp Gravy: Live and Learn in Colquitt For the past twenty years, community members in Colquitt have been creating their own success story. They’ve collectively written, composed, and performed original storytelling theatre, and in doing so have revitalized their dying town. The show is called “Swamp Gravy,” a reference to a tomato-based concoction that, like the piece itself, varies in ingredients and is full of local flavor. This community-based play uses true stories told by the residents of Miller County, and though these stories are from small-town Georgia, they reveal some deeper truths about humanity as a whole. With the aid of professional theater collaborators, Swamp Gravy is performed by approximately 100 volunteer citizens of the town each year. Swamp Gravy presents a new show every October with a remount every March. Swamp Gravy: Live and Learn is the title of the 20th anniversary show. It follows the true stories of several community members as they learn who they really are and what truly matters in life. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway This 26-mile round trip from Blue Ridge to McCaysville offers spectacular views of scenic valleys, forests, rolling hills, and the beautiful Toccoa River. Perspectives Georgia Pottery Invitational in Watkinsville The 10th Annual Perspectives 2012: Georgia Pottery Invitational from August 31September 19 will showcase the work of 50 potters from all corners of the state and will exemplify the finest ceramicists in Georgia. The Real Squeal 2012: Lyons Barbeque & Music Festival Lyons Better Hometown is preparing for their third annual barbeque festival, The Real Squeal 2012. Held every October in Lyons, The Real Squeal is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event and a Georgia Barbeque Championship event with both professional and amateur barbeque competitions. Georgia Apple Festival The 41st annual Georgia Apple Festival will be held two weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays, October 13-14 and 20-21, at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds on Old Hwy. 5, south of Ellijay. There will be over 300 vendors selling handmade, hand-crafted items, craft demonstrations, live entertainment, food, an antique car show at the Civic Center on Saturday, October 13, and a parade on Saturday, October 20, at 10am. Sorghum Festival in Blairsville The 43rd annual Sorghum Festival will be held in Blairsville at Meeks Park on October 13-14 and October 20-21 from 9am-5pm. Million Pines Arts & Crafts Festival in Soperton The 40th annual Million Pines Arts and Crafts Festival will be held November 3-4 in Soperton’s Iva Park. Under shady pines you will find arts and crafts and food booths and demonstrations on pottery, basket weaving, chair caning, and blacksmithing. Carrollton MeccaFest The Carrollton Artist Guild will present The Carrollton Fine Arts and Crafts MeccaFest on October 13-14 from 10am-5pm at the Cultural Art Center, 251 Alabama Street. Toccoa Harvest Festival The 36th annual Toccoa Harvest Festival on November 3-4 will have more than 200 craft and food vendors. Crafts will be home-made, homebaked, or home-grown and will include jewelry, water fountains, wind chimes, candles, soaps, gourds, clothing, furniture, and yard art. The Currahee Artist Guild will also have a sale and demonstration Saturday. Festival hours will be Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm. Plains Peanut Festival The Plains Peanut Festival on September 15 will honor the peanut industry, the peanut farmer, and Plains’ native son, Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the U.S. Admission and parking will be free. Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival Near Warner Robins The Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival between Warner Robins and Perry on October 20-21 will welcome visitors with whiffs of barbecue and other delicious foods, sounds of fiddles, and original and creative arts and crafts in and amongst the old homestead buildings and throughout the terraced woods. The amphitheater in Dogwood Hollow will feature bluegrass bands, Appalachian mountain music, gospel quartets, and dance teams. Over 40 old-timers will resurrect pioneer ways: dipping candles, weaving hammocks, building fishing rods, weaving chairseats with cornshucks, making baskets, building dulcimers and brooms, tatting, wood carving, cutting silhouettes, tinsmithing, and more. Kaolin Festival in Sandersville The Kaolin Festival, which started in 1957, will host a parade including local pageant queens, marching bands, civic organizations, and industry floats. The downtown square will be filled with vendors selling arts & crafts, food, a Kaolin education area, mine tours, and live music starting mid-day. Hawkinsville Harvest Fest The 2012 Hawkinsville Harvest Fest, or “Pigs and Produce” as it has been named locally, will be held October 26-27 in historic downtown Hawkinsville. Seminole County Harvest Festival in Donalsonville The 33rd Annual Seminole County Harvest Festival will be held in Donalsonville on Saturday, October 20. Activities will actually begin downtown on Friday with a peanut recipe contest, a window decorating contest for merchants, and an art show. Saturday’s festivities will begin with a 5K Run and a 1 Mile Fun-Run at 8am and a parade at 10am. There will be arts and crafts, food, children’s activities, new and antique farm equipment displays, commercial exhibits, and a car and motorcycle show.
