A Tour of Southern Ghosts at Stone Mountain Park The 33rd annual A Tour of Southern Ghosts will be presented by ART Station at Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park Thursdays through Sundays, October 11-27. Meet professional storytellers weaving their tales of famous Southern Ghosts along the lantern-lit paths of the Antebellum Plantation grounds at Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park. A Tour of Southern Ghosts is held during the Halloween season so the stories are a little scary, many times humorous, but never too frightening and always appropriate for young children. Each night will offer a different cast of six storytellers, which means audience members may return to A Tour of Southern Ghosts on additional nights to hear a new collection of stories. The first 45-minute tour will begin at 7pm with a new tour beginning every 10 minutes. Tickets may be purchased on tour nights at the box office of the Antebellum Plantation beginning at 6:45pm. Ticket prices will be $17 for adults or $12/adult presale and $8 for children 12 and under. For more information, call 770-469-1105 or visit www.artstation.org.

The World Gathers at Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta

10 GUIDE TO GEORGIA / September/October 2018

E

ngland, France, India, Egypt, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Australia, and the United States — the whole world can be found in one place, once a month: Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta, Georgia. Taking a trip to the two huge buildings at the Atlanta Expo Centers is like taking a trip around the globe in one fun-filled day. Each vendor has a unique experience awaiting you around every corner. A vendor who deals in Persian rugs imported from Turkey can be situated right next to a vendor who deals in antique book plates from Europe or lighting from the southern United States. Laurie Ward, who has been a vendor at Scott Antique Markets for 15 years, travels to England and France multiple times a year to pick up fresh merchandise for her customers. “I always have an itinerary and I just go shop,” she said. “I’m not there sightseeing. I’m not having tea with the queen. I’m not going to visit cool castles. I’m just there to hunt.” Ward always has a list of places she shops regularly, as well as a few new places to try. She says you never know where you’ll find your next treasure trove. Matt Culverson, part of the family-run business Nostalgia Fine Art, says he and his family get their original pieces from all over. “The original antique prints, we have a buyer in Europe that buys for us,” he said. “But we’re always looking. We buy everywhere. We buy online. It’s a constant treasure hunt.” Culverson says he and his family also work with a few museums to buy the rights to make giclee reproductions of their images. Nostalgia Fine Art has tens of thousands of images on hand from all over the world available for purchase every month with prices ranging from just $10 to thousands. All of the vendors at Scott Antique Markets work hard to make sure they have the best, most unique pieces for their customers and many of them take trips overseas to hand-pick the best treasures or import items they know people will love. Andrew Harley, for example, takes trips to Germany to bring back furniture and smaller items to display. Hundreds of Persian rugs are available to browse through that are imported from Turkey with prices ranging from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Sterling silver from American makers like Gorham and Reed & Barton shine in another booth run by Michael Weaver and his family with a 6-piece Chantilly silver tea set selling for $9,900-a steal as the set retails for $15-$20,000and a set of Francis First flatware that includes 12 four-piece settings and a six-piece hostess set going for $2,600 while it retails in the world market for $6,000. Vendors from India, Australia, Egypt and other countries that have settled in the United States also bring their personal flair to the show, adding items that are rarely seen in America to the market. If you want to shop the world but can’t afford the travel, just head to Atlanta, Georgia the second weekend of every month. Scott Antique Markets is one of the world’s largest museums — and everything is for sale. September/October 2018 / GUIDE TO GEORGIA 11

Tribute in Light 911 Remembrance

Tribute in Light is a commemorative public art installation first presented six months after 9/11 and then every year thereafter, from dusk to dawn, on the night of September 11. It has become an iconic symbol that both honors those killed and celebrates the unbreakable American. Assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south of the 9/11 Memorial, the twin beams reach up to four miles into the sky and are comprised of 88 7,000watt xenon light bulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers. On the anniversary of 9/11, the Memorial Plaza is open to the public from 3pm to midnight for the viewing of Tribute in Light. The installation can also be viewed from a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan. Tribute in Light was conceived by several artists and designers who were then brought together under the auspices of the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time: John Bennett, Gustavo Boneverdi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian LaVerdiere, and Paul Myoda, with lighting consultant Paul Marantz.

Georgia Tech architecture alumnus Michael Arad designed the 9/11 Memorial in remembrance of those killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001. “Reflecting Absence”

is a serene, public space for collective contemplation and remembrance. Two 30-feet deep reflecting pools create footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of the 2,983 people whose lives were lost are etched across bronze panels surrounding the two pools. The memorial was dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in September 2011. Southeastern Railway Museum The Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia, showcases the colorful history that railroads and transportation played in shaping both Atlanta and North Georgia. The 35-acre museum is home to more than 90 pieces of historic railroad equipment, buses and artifacts that bring to life the region’s transportation history. The state designated the museum “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum.” Many of the historic railroad cars and locomotives on display are open for guests to climb aboard and explore. Visitors can buy tickets to ride on a train made up of vintage cabooses or purchase a cab ride and join the engineer as he operates the train around the property. Among the rail cars on display is The Superb, a Pullman Co.-built private car President Warren G. Harding used during his 1923 “Voyage of Understanding.” Harding died before finishing the trip, and the car carried the president’s coffin to Washington, D. C., for the state funeral and then to Marion, Ohio, for his burial. The car is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum hosts special events throughout the year, including an annual photo contest in February, Caboose Days in April, the Fast Track 5K in May, Locomotive Celebration in June, Train-or-Treat in October and Polar Express Experience in December. For more information about the exhibits, prices and special events, visit SoutheasternRailwayMuseum.org.

Georgia’s Hands-Free Law On July 1, a new law aimed at eliminating distracted driving was enacted in Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the following provisions are enacted to prohibit distracted driving and encourage technology-free travelling throughout the state.

While driving, you can’t . . .

Hold or support any wireless telecommunication device with any part of the body. Write, send, or read texting of any kind in the form of text message, instant message, email or internet data. Watch a video or movie on a wireless telecommunication device. Record or broadcast video footage. Get out of the seat or remove the seat belt to reach for device.

You can . . .

Use earpieces, headphones, or Apple Watch to talk. Use voice recognition (like “Hey Siri” or “OK Google”) to text, email, instant message, etc. Use Maps application and GPS, which includes entering location information while driving. Use one button to activate voice recognition. Use devices such as: “radio, CB radio, CB radio hybrid, commercial two way radio, subscription based emergency communication device, prescribed medical device, amateur/ham radio device, in-vehicle security and navigation, or remote diagnostics system.”

This law doesn’t apply . . .

When reporting a traffic incident, medical emergency, fire, crime or road condition that poses a hazard. To employees or contractors of utility service providers responding to a utility emergency. To police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, etc. While the vehicle is lawfully parked (not just stopped). Many distractions exist while driving, but cell phones are a top distraction because so many drivers use them for long periods of time each day. Almost everyone has seen a driver distracted by a cell phone, but when you are the one distracted, you often don’t realize that driver is you.

The Personal Story of a Cancer Survivor by Teresa Worsley

I was 42 years old, married with 2 grown sons, 1 grandchild and another on the way. My husband and I had recently left our home in Georgia and moved to Louisiana for work. We bought a new house; my husband was enjoying his job and visits from family made for a “wonderful life.” Then, things changed! I looked up from my hospital bed into my husband’s distraught face. Still groggy from anesthesia, I asked, “Was everything OK?” He simply shook his head, no. Breast cancer... and it had spread! What should have been the most terrifying time in my life, was soothed by the presence of my Lord. The sentiment, “It is well with my soul” came to life for me. No matter what lay ahead for me and my family on this journey called “breast cancer,” I knew, right then, that all would be ok. The Lord’s will would be done. The next year of my life included a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery and chemotherapy treatments. In that time, I came to know that the Lord is truly with His children. I could feel His presence as if He were standing next to me. He lead me to some wonderful doctors and nurses that were dedicated to making my life better! I always “thought” that the Lord would be with me through troubled times but now I KNOW!! I KNOW that He will hold my hand. I KNOW that He will never leave me. I KNOW that His grace is sufficient!! It has been 20 years since that “wonderful” time in my life. Yes, wonderful! The world is such a better place to live in knowing what I learned during that time. I gained so much more than I lost! If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, I pray that you will be transformed the way that I have been.

Fitzgerald — the place of reconciliation . . . Fitzgerald the seat of Ben Hill County, located in the heart of south central Georgia, is best known as a place of reconciliation among Civil War (1861-65) veterans. Philander Fitzgerald, a former drummer boy in the Union army, had become a pension attorney with a thriving practice in Indianapolis, Indiana. His interest in the welfare of his fellow veterans is well documented and led Fitzgerald to conceive of the idea for a soldiers’ colony in the South. Early on, the prospect of so many northerners inhabiting the Deep South was a strange concept, but as soon as settlement began, the locals offered their cooperation. An early nickname of Fitzgerald, the “Colony City,” is still in use today. Through this harmony the idea that the town would be a spotlight of post-Reconstruction reconciliation was assured. There was little strife among the new colonists, who proved their dedication to unity by naming an equal number of streets in the city proper for Union and Confederate notables. Fitzgerald is still a place of reconciliation: A place to live, work, and play. Visit www.fitzgeraldga.org.

South by South, An Alice Williams Exhibit September 28 - January 20, 2019

From the South of France to the Southern US, an artist comes home. Taking in an Alice Williams painting is a meditation; transporting, comforting, inspiring, and revealing. Luring one in ever more deeply with its color play and thoughtful composition, her rhythmic strokes delightfully blur the sharp edges of reality, and take the viewer into a lovely, timeless, secret world they never even knew they were missing. This collection of oil paintings is on display at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, www.mmcc-arts.org, 706-342-4743, or 855-627-0723. The exhibit is a collection of oil paintings by Alice Williams - an incredible American, post-modern impressionist. Trained in America, but spending most of her time now in France, Alice’s French atmosphere and love of gardening are apparent in her paintings. “Alice Williams paints, laughs, gardens, and lives with an ease and awakened wonder which infuse the very fibers of her canvas and inspire every stroke of her brush. Taking in an Alice Williams painting is a meditation; transporting, comforting, inspiring, and revealing.” Alice’s homes and gardens have been the subjects of at least 14 articles in major publications, and her paintings can be seen in galleries across the country. Lane Southern Orchards It’s Fall y’all, and the best time to spend a day on the farm. You can romp through the 6 acre corn maze and try to find the corny signs hidden inside for a chance to win weekly prizes. Take an old fashioned hayride, pick the perfect pumpkin at the pumpkin patch and test your shooting skills with a corn cannon. You and your family can compete to see who’s rubber duck can make it down the flume the fastest, or who’s the champion at pumpkin checkers. The kids can play on a farm themed playground with real tractors. While you’re there, enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Peachtree Café. You can end your day with a big bowl of home-made peach cobbler, a bunch of spoons and tell all your tales while sitting on the front porch in one of their rocking chairs. Lane Southern Orchards is located just off I-75 at Exit 142, or Exit 24 off of I-16, tucked between Macon and Fort Valley in the heart of Middle Georgia. Get away from the hustle and bustle and spend your day on the farm. Call 800-2773224 or visit LaneSouthernOrchards.com for more information. We hope to see y’all soon!

Swamp Gravy: Fourth and Long For more than twenty five years, community members in Colquitt have been creating their own success story. They’ve collectively written, composed, and performed original storytelling theatre, and in doing so have revitalized their dying town. The show is called Swamp Gravy, a reference to a tomato-based concoction that, like the piece itself, varies in ingredients and is full of local flavor. This community-based play uses true stories told by the residents of Miller County, and though these stories are from small-town Georgia, they reveal some deeper truths about humanity as a whole. With the aid of professional theater collaborators, Swamp Gravy is performed by approximately 100 volunteer citizens of the town each year. This October, Swamp Gravy will be telling stories set under the Friday night lights, with a brand new production titled Swamp Gravy: Fourth and Long. Written by Will Murdock, Swamp Gravy will run October 5-27, 2018 and March 1-23, 2019 on Fridays at 7:30pm and Saturdays at 2 and 6pm. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.swampgravy. com or by calling 229-758-5450. Group rates are available.
