Hello

Welcome t

Fall,

Guide to Georgia Potpourri Beautiful things happen when you bring people and food together. We all have to eat, but the question is where should we eat when we travel? Connecting through food has been bringing families and cultures together for years, and now there is an increased desire to interact more locally and find more meaningful connections and relationships when we travel. Doing this through food is a great way to infuse some ‘local’ on your vacation. Or maybe you don’t want to be social, but you do want to eat at restaurants where the locals go to eat for a more authentic experience. You want to find the popular local restaurants, but it’s hard to decipher through all of the tourism hype. As a tourist, how do you find where the locals go?

A Traveler’s Guide to Discovering Neighborhood Restaurants

Here are four near-foolproof ways to find a memorable meal: 1. Chat up the locals. Ask absolutely everyone where you should eat. Use word of mouth to your advantage. 2. If you’re visiting, don’t just pick up brochures at the tourist bureau, ask the people who work there what their favorite restaurants are and why. Do the same at your hotel, gas stations, and shops. 3. Tour local markets . . . and ask vendors where they eat. Check local newspapers. Don’t limit yourself to the major paper. Pick up weeklies and free newspapers. Read the ads to obtain tips on dining. 4. Consider attending a fund-raising event that features local foods, such as a church supper or firehouse chicken dinner. While you’re eating, chat with people about good restaurants. I seek out cozy, unpretentious p laces with which I can build a relationship, rather than the restaurants with star chefs and social-media buzz. Restaurants like these make a town come alive. I often find myself going back to the same set of cafes. Unlike formal restaurants, local haunts often b ecome a nexus of an entire community. Neighborhood regulars come weekly or even daily; waiters know every diner’s name, if not their entire life history. Restaurants like these often form the heat of my experiences of a place, making a town come alive. A town that I first approach as a stranger will, after a few days, start to feel inexorably like home. The best part of places like these is, almost invariably, the people-watching. I am no longer fully an outsider.

How to Be A Restaurant Sleuth

Here are a few of my discoveries: some near some not so. Columbus – Evelyn’s Café – An authentic southern restaurant, Evelyn’s has been around forever. Fried chicken is divine. Open for breakfast and lunch and is always packed. Warm Springs – Dinner’s Ready By Chad offers Southern comfort food with giant portions. Bluffton, SC – Walnut’s Café – Friendly, efficient service. Charming venue dishing up classic American meals for breakfast and lunch. Best Sunday Brunch ever. Fayetteville – Broadway Diner – Everything made from scratch. Extensive diner menu. Hamilton – Hunter’s Pub and Steak House – If you ain’t worried about a nice fancy place that serves your meal on fine china, if you like great steaks and exceptional seafood offerings complimented by good ‘ole southern hospitality, this is the place. What’s your favorite “neighborhood” restaurant? Share with us at info@guideto georgia.com.

Wi-Fi Is Safer Than Ever, but You Still Need to Be Careful According to the Wall Street Journal, public Wi-Fi has never been safer, but it still pays to take some basic precautions to keep your data safe. For as long as we have had public Wi-Fi networks, we have been told they are unsafe and that we should never enter sensitive information while on a public network and don’t even think about logging into your bank account. Always think twice before entering sensitive information, but the public Wi-Fi story has changed. In recent years, the internet itself has gotten more secure as have your devices and the networks themselves. It is still true that logging on to a public Wi-Fi incurs certain security and privacy risks, but they are generally the same ones you encounter anytime you are online. According to the Journal, if you follow a few simple tips, you should feel free to hop on the network wherever you are: 1. Don’t leave off the last S. The most important contributor to your safety has nothing to do with Wi-Fi at all. More websites have adopted an encrypted protocol called HTTPS for network communication. The S stands for secure. The most problematic thing about public Wi-Fi isn’t security but privacy. Don’t confuse that login page with a security measure. You are actually agreeing to the network’s terms of use. You are also agreeing to let the network collect all manner of data about you and your internet activity, from the device you are using to the sites you visit. In many cases, you are agreeing to let that data be sold or used for advertising and marketing. Whether you are online at the coffee shop or your living room, you are roughly in the same spot: Not totally safe. That’s why most tips for staying safe on public WiFi also apply to your private, at home Wi-Fi. According to the Wall Street Journal, here is what you should do every time you connect to the internet: 2. Always check that lock to make sure you are on the user’s HTTPS. 3. If you are not confident in your current location, use your mobile data instead. 4. To avoid phishing attacks, type in your bank’s website or use its official app, r ather than clicking on a link to the site from your email. 5. Keep your devices and apps up to date. 6. Use a password manager, along with two factor authentication – and never reuse a password (seriously). 7. Create a throwaway email address when these networks ask for one. Tailgating

Fall is by far one of my favorite seasons! Last year, I went apple picking with my family in North Georgia and as we meandered through the color ful hills, I spotted a couple who had parked their car in a nearby field to enjoy each other’s company in a tailgate picnic. What a great idea! With stunning reds and oranges making their way through the greenery, warm fleece blankets, hot chocolate, fall themed soups, freshly picked apples… the list could go on forever! Tailgating isn’t just for football Saturdays. Any sunny fall afternoon is a great time to assemble a team of friends, pack some handy snacks, and head outside to enjoy the gorgeous fall color. Serve a selection of soups plus simple snacks that don’t require utensils, plates, bowls, or electricity. Fresh and dried fruits, nuts, flatbreads, and crackers fill the bill. For a drink, offer apple cider served from a large splatterware jug that has a spigot. Pack snacks in plain brown paper bags at home. To serve, just roll down the tops of the bags and you’ve got serving “bowls” that can be thrown away at the end of the day. Choose foods that can be stored and served at room temperature. Vintage insulated bottles are appealing and prac tical for toting and serving soup. Keep the soups simple (purchased or homemade) and drinkable (nothing too chunky) to avoid the need for spoons. You can’t go wrong with graham crack ers, chocolate, and roasted marshmallows. Pack a s’mores kit in a lidded tin, then pull out the goodies once you’re on site and let everyone toast their own. Burn up some calories with a little pigskin-tossing in the woods or maybe just a long walk through the falling leaves.

Make Memories in Meriwether County Meriwether County will again host the Third Annual “Meriwether Menu” event. Enjoy an elegantly prepared and served cuisine inside the iconic and historic Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge, near the city of Woodbury. Built by freed slave Horace King in the 1840’s, this bridge has withstood the test of time and serves as a memorable backdrop for the culinary experience. Enjoy the linen covered tablecloths and beautiful chandeliers as you listen to the water flowing gently under the bridge and wait for the big bright moon to make an appearance. The annual Harvest Hoedown will be held on Saturday, October 12th from 9am-6pm with arts & crafts; delicious food; live entertainment and lots of activities for the kids. Parade starts at 11am. While here visit Roosevelt’s Little White House. Built in 1932, visitors can tour FDR’s home which has been carefully preserved very much as he left it. Round out your visit by experiencing The Chapel on the grounds of Roosevelt Warm Springs and see the Polio Hall of Fame, honoring the doctors and scientists who made important contributions to our knowledge of p olio. Bring in the New Year with ‘Possum Drop’ Tallapoosa Style Join the residents of Tallapoosa, formerly known as “Possum Snout,” and the West Georgia community as we ring in the New Year in Downtown Tallapoosa. At midnight, a stuffed possum named “Spencer” is lowered in a holiday lights covered ball from atop one of the city’s oldest buildings. To solidify the unofficial possum mascot, Bud Jones, a local taxidermist, decided to stuff and preserve a possum that he found on the side of the road in the late 1990’s. He named it “Spencer,” after 19th century Tallapoosa businessman Ralph Spencer. Tallapoosa’s Possum Drop has quietly gained momentum in its dozen-plus years. The crowd annually exceeds the town’s population and drives the coronation of a Possum King and Queen. This small-town event is a holiday staple for the West Georgia and East Alabama areas. It’s an evening filled with music, fireworks, and fun activities for your entire family. “On the Border – the Ultimate Eagles Tribute” band returns as our main stage entertainment. Vendors are setMANCHESTER up along HeadRAILROAD Avenue selling DAYS their crafts while we wait for midnight. We invite you and your to join us•this Eve as we celebrate. Tribute in Light 911 Remembrance

Tribute in Light is a commemorative public art installation first presented six months after 9/11 and then every year thereafter, from dusk to dawn, on the night of September 11. It has become an iconic symbol that both honors those killed and celebrates the unbreakable American. Assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south of the 9/11 Memorial, the twin beams reach up to four miles into the sky and are comprised of 88 7,000watt xenon light bulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers. On the anniversary of 9/11, the Memorial Plaza is open to the public from 3pm to midnight for the viewing of Tribute in Light. The installation can also be viewed from a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan. Tribute in Light was conceived by several artists and designers who were then brought together under the auspices of the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time: John Bennett, Gustavo Boneverdi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian LaVerdiere, and Paul Myoda, with lighting consultant Paul Marantz.

Georgia Tech architecture alumnus Michael Arad designed the 9/11 Memorial in remembrance of those killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001. “Reflecting Absence”

is a serene, public space for collective contemplation and remembrance. Two 30-feet deep reflecting pools create footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of the 2,983 people whose lives were lost are etched across bronze panels surrounding the two pools. The memorial was dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in September 2011.
