ne dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. She had put it aside, one cent and then another and then another, in her careful buying of meat and other food. Della counted it three times. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was nothing to do but fall on the bed and cry. So Della did it. While the lady of the home is slowly growing quieter, we can look at the home. Furnished rooms at a cost of $8 a week. There is little more to say about it. In the hall below was a letter-box too small to hold a letter. There was an electric bell, but it could not make a sound. Also there was a name beside the door: “Mr. James Dillingham Young.” When the name was placed there, Mr. James Dillingham Young was being paid $30 a week. Now, when he was being paid only $20 a week, the name seemed too long and important. It should perhaps have been “Mr. James D. Young.” But when Mr. James Dillingham Young entered the furnished rooms, his name became very short indeed. Mrs. James Dillingham Young put her arms warmly about him and called him “Jim.” You have already met her. She is Della. Della finished her crying and cleaned the marks of it from her face. She stood by the window and looked out with no interest. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a gift. She had put aside as much as she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week is not much. Everything had cost more than she had expected. It always happened like that. Only $1.87 to buy a gift for Jim. Her Jim. She had had many happy hours planning something nice for him. Something nearly good enough. Something almost worth the honor of belonging to Jim. There was a looking-glass between the windows of the room. Perhaps you have seen the kind of looking-glass that is placed in $8 furnished rooms. It was very narrow. A person could see only a little of himself at a time. However, if he was very thin and moved very quickly, he might be able to get a good view of himself. Della, being quite thin, had mastered this art. Suddenly she turned from the window and stood before the glass. Her eyes were shining brightly, but her face had lost its color. Quickly she pulled down her hair and let it fall to its complete length. The James Dillingham Youngs were very proud of two things which they owned. One thing was Jim’s gold watch. It had once belonged to his father. And, long ago, it had belonged to his father’s father. The other thing was Della’s hair. If a queen had lived in the rooms near theirs, Della would have washed and dried her hair where the queen could see it. Della knew her hair was more beautiful than any queen’s jewels and gifts. If a king had lived in the same house, with all his riches, Jim would have looked at his watch every time they met. Jim knew that no king had anything so valuable. So now Della’s beautiful hair fell about her, shining like a falling stream of brown water. It reached below her knee. It almost made itself into a dress for her. And then she put it up on her head again, nervously and quickly. Once she stopped for a moment and stood still while a tear or two ran down her face. She put on her old brown coat. She put on her old brown hat. With the bright light still in her eyes, she moved quickly out the door and down to the street. 6 GUIDE TO GEORGIA / November/December 2019

Where she stopped, the sign said: “Mrs. Sofronie. Hair Articles of all Kinds.” Up to the second floor Della ran, and stopped to get her breath. Mrs. Sofronie, large, too white, cold-eyed, looked at her. “Will you buy my hair?” asked Della. “I buy hair,” said Mrs. Sofronie. “Take your hat off and let me look at it.” Down fell the brown waterfall. “Twenty dollars,” said Mrs. Sofronie, lifting the hair to feel its weight. “Give it to me quick,” said Della. Oh, and the next two hours seemed to fly. She was going from one shop to another, to find a gift for Jim. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. There was no other like it in any of the shops, and she had looked in every shop in the city. It was a gold watch chain, very simply made. Its value was in its rich and pure material. Because it was so plain and simple, you knew that it was very valuable. All good things are like this. It was good enough for The Watch. As soon as she saw it, she knew that Jim must have it. It was like him. Quietness and value—Jim and the chain both had quietness and value. She paid twenty-one dollars for it. And she hurried home with the chain and eighty-seven cents. With that chain on his watch, Jim could look at his watch and learn the time anywhere he might be. Though the watch was so fine, it had never had a fine chain. He sometimes took it out and looked at it only when no one could see him do it. When Della arrived home, her mind quieted a little. She began to think more reasonably. She started to try to cover the sad marks of what she had done. Love and large-hearted giving, when added together, can leave deep marks. It is never easy to cover these marks, dear friends—never easy. Within forty minutes her head looked a little better. With her short hair, she looked wonderfully like a schoolboy. She stood at the looking-glass for a long time. “If Jim doesn’t kill me,” she said to herself, “before he looks at me a second time, he’ll say I look like a girl who sings and dances for money. But what could I do—oh! What could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents?” At seven, Jim’s dinner was ready for him. Jim was never late. Della held the watch chain in her hand and sat near the door where he always entered. Then she heard his step in the hall and her face lost color for a moment. She often said little prayers quietly, about simple everyday things. And now she said: “Please God, make him think I’m still pretty.” The door opened and Jim stepped in. He looked very thin and he was not smiling. Poor fellow, he was only twenty-two—and with a family to take care of! He needed a new coat and he had nothing to cover his cold hands. The Gift of the Magi Jim stopped inside the door. He was as quiet as a hunting dog when it is near a bird. His eyes looked strangely at Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not understand. It filled her with fear. It was not anger, nor surprise, nor anything she had been ready for. He simply looked at her with that strange expression on his face. Della went to him. “Jim, dear,” she cried, “don’t look at me like that. I had my hair cut off and sold it. I couldn’t live through Christmas without giving you a gift. My hair will grow again. You won’t care, will you? My hair grows very fast. It’s Christmas, Jim. Let’s be happy. You don’t know what a nice—what a beautiful nice gift I got for you.” “You’ve cut off your hair?” asked Jim slowly. He seemed to labor to understand what had happened. He seemed not to feel sure he knew. “Cut it off and sold it,” said Della. “Don’t you like me now? I’m me, Jim. I’m the same without my hair.” Jim looked around the room. “You say your hair is gone?” he said. “You don’t have to look for it,” said Della. “It’s sold, I tell you—sold and gone, too. It’s the night before Christmas, boy. Be good to me, because I sold it for you. Maybe the hairs of my head could be counted,” she said, “but no one could ever count my love for you. Shall we eat dinner, Jim?” Jim put his arms around his Della. For ten seconds let us look in another direction. Eight dollars a week or a million dollars a year—how different are they? Someone may give you an answer, but it will be wrong. The magi brought valuable gifts, but that was not among them. My meaning will be explained soon. From inside the coat, Jim took something tied in paper. He threw it upon the table. “I want you to understand me, Dell,” he said. “Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less. But if you’ll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in.” White fingers pulled off the paper. And then a cry of joy; and then a change to tears. For there lay The Combs—the combs that Della had seen in a shop window and loved for a long time. Beautiful combs, with jewels, perfect for her beautiful hair. She had known they cost too much for her to buy them. She had looked at them without the least hope of owning them. And now they were hers, but her hair was gone. But she held them to her heart, and at last was able to look up and say: “My hair grows so fast, Jim!” And then she jumped up and cried, “Oh, oh!” 8 GUIDE TO GEORGIA / November/December 2019

Jim had not yet seen his beautiful gift. She held it out to him in her open hand. The gold seemed to shine softly as if with her own warm and loving spirit. “Isn’t it perfect, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You’ll have to look at your watch a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how they look together.” Jim sat down and smiled. “Della,” said he, “let’s put our Christmas gifts away and keep them a while. They’re too nice to use now. I sold the watch to get the money to buy the combs. And now I think we should have our dinner.” The magi, as you know, were wise men—wonderfully wise men—who O. Henry brought gifts to the newborn Christ(1862-1910) was child. They were the first to give born William Christmas gifts. Being wise, their Sidney Porter, in gifts were doubtless wise ones. And Greensboro, North here I have told you the story of two Carolina. He children who were not wise. Each was an American writer whose short stories are known sold the most valuable thing he owned for wit, wordplay and clever twist in order to buy a gift for the other. But endings. His tales romanticized the let me speak a last word to the wise commonplace—in particular the life of of these days: Of all who give gifts, ordinary people in New York City. He these two were the most wise. Of all wrote nearly 600 stories about life in who give and receive gifts, such as America. they are the most wise. Everywhere Foreign translations and they are the wise ones. adaptations for other art forms, They are the magi. including films and television, attest his universal application and appeal.

Our appreciation to artist Barney Levitt for permission to reprint his painting of The Gift of the Magi. Barney Levitt works from a studio in his house selecting objects of personal interest. He creates a narrative from the chosen objects that elevates and gives new meaning to their ordinariness. Symbolism plays strongly in his work. His visual presentation captures O’Henry’s transparent telling the truth about human nature in The Gift of the Magi. Barney Levitt was raised in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York where his family helped nuture a keen appreciation for nature. He states, “As a child, drawing seemed as natural and necessary as breathing.” Hopefully he will continue to do both for a long time to come. For more information on his extraordinary work:

As President, on October 3, 1789, George Washington made the following proclamation and created the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of the United States of America: Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

A Hometown Holiday Experience in Peachtree City Peachtree City is a master planned city located 25 minutes south of the world’s busiest airport. It is centrally located, with several major attractions right in our backyard. No cars are required! In the late 1950’s, developers began creating the paved cart path system that would connect residents and visitors to shopping, dining, resort-styled hotel/conference centers, golf, and other recreation. Bridges, tunnels, and paths wind through natural settings of lakes, parks, and playgrounds. Peachtree City is home to the “boutique itinerary” where you can craft a personalized, local plan to keep you entertained throughout your visit. The boutique itinerary allows visitors to build their experience with multiple local attractions for an action-packed weekend full of fun. Rent a luxury suite for your group for Thursday Thunder or Friday Night Drag at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Enjoy a truly one-of-a-kind experience at one of the world’s most innovative theater companies for live events–Serenbe Playhouse. For soccer enthusiasts, MOBA offers a VIP tent and welcome e xperience at regular season games. Any combination of arts, sports, and adventure can culminate for the perfect getaway. The best way to enjoy Peachtree City is to immerse yourself in the local scene. Blume Organics is a Peachtree City staple that flourishes during the holidays. With regular Sip and Shops, this small business opens its doors for you to enjoy warm seasonal beverages and appetizers, listen to music, and shop at discounted prices. They regularly partner with other business or nonprofits to bring consumers the most amazing products and memorable encounters. Described by locals as “filled with a sense of warmth and comfort,” we recommend the Almond Joy Latte to get you in the holiday spirit. If you’re a more artistic type, create your gifts this year at Board & Brush. Their classes allow for an intimate opportunity to learn a new craft, converse over wine, and have fun in the process. Regularly scheduled themed evenings will inspire you to personalize your masterpiece. More than just putting a gift under the tree, you can give a one-of-a-kind present from the heart. Peachtree City boasts seven unique shopping villages for your holiday adventures. For more information phone 678-216-0282 or visit on the web at www.visitpeachtreecity.com.

The Murals of Meriwether County Gay: The city of Gay, once called Sasserville, was home to a thriving cotton production, which represents the centerpiece of their mural.

Greenville: With the classic portrait of Franklin Roosevelt, along with

other city leaders, the center of the mural reflects the stately and historic courthouse, historic churches and historic homes. Lone Oak: Lone Oak gets its name from one lone oak post which is where the roads crossed. In the center of the mural is the entrance to the Wilkes Gold Mine which is no longer operational. Luthersville: Luthersville is named for Martin Luther because earliest settlers were Lutheran. The center piece is the CSX train depot which was in what is now the city park. Manchester: The railroad industry has always been a prominent part of Manchester’s past and present.

Warm Springs: The mural is referred to as the Presidents Mural as it de

picts three Presidents. In the center piece is Franklin Roosevelt who came to Warm Springs seeking treatment for his polio.

Woodbury: The enterpiece of Woodbury is the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge. Constructed by freed slave Horace King, it is the oldest and long est in Georgia. Representing Wood bury’s status as the Pimiento Capital of the World are the bright pimiento peppers, along with other crops.

60 Years Old instruments of good quality maintain their value and worth.

Sister Monica Joan - Call the Midwife

With the introduction of our inaugural Winter Issue in January 2020, the Guide to Georgia begins its 60th year of publication. Founded in 1960, Guide to Georgia became the premier publication for information on activities and entertainment in Georgia. What is unique about us and the majority of publications’ anniversaries is that we celebrate a publication mostly rooted in print— most places didn’t have a major online presence until 10-15 years ago. Now that tech has grown so quickly in such a compressed time, it can be quite challenging to prove that old printed content can be still relevant in a digital environment, but like Sister Monica Joan from Call the Midwife, we believe “Old instruments of good quality maintain their value and worth”. We seek to be the bridge between People of the Book and People of the Screen, between past and present. We are just as comfortable on a book shelf or a coffee table engaging our readers across multiple platfoms, including social media.

Look for our 60th Anniversary Issue in early January.

6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” —Luke 2:6-14 (NIV) November/December 2019 / GUIDE TO GEORGIA

From camellias in the winter, to peaches and pecans in the summer and fall, Peach County has just what you’re looking for. You can visit Lane Southern Orchards, in Fort Valley, grab some lunch from the Peachtree Café and a few Georgia Grown goodies while you’re there. And now, just in time for the holidays, they’ll be harvesting the annual Georgia pecan crop. Explore Washington, Georgia Wilkes County was the first county in Georgia formed under the Georgia Constitution of 1777. Just three years later, the county seat, Washington, was incorporated and became the first chartered town in the State and first chartered in the name of George Washington. Washington-Wilkes has played a major role in not only Georgia’s history but our nation’s as well. The Revolutionary battle of Kettle Creek was fought in Wilkes County on February 14, 1779. This battle was responsible for driving the British out of northeast Georgia. During the War Between the States, Washington-Wilkes played host to the last cabinet meeting of the Confederacy which was attended by Jefferson Davis. It was also the last place that the infamous Confederate gold was tracked…and never found. In addition to boasting more antebellum homes per capita than any other city in America, Washington is also home to the first free public library in Georgia. With its Tiffany windows The Mary Willis Library was recently voted the most beautiful library in Georgia. Explore nearly 250 years of heritage in three of Georgia’s finest museums: The Washington Historical Museum, The Robert Toombs House and Callaway Plantation. For more information phone 706-678-5111, or visit www.WashingtonWilkes.org, or on Facebook/HistoricWashingtonWilkes.
