Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth The Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia, showcases the colorful history that railroads and transportation played in shaping both Atlanta and North Georgia. The 35-acre museum is home to more than 90 pieces of historic railroad equipment, buses and artifacts that bring to life the region’s transportation history. The state designated the museum “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum.” Many of the historic railroad cars and locomotives on display are open for guests to climb aboard and explore. Visitors can buy tickets to ride on a train made up of vintage cabooses or purchase a cab ride and join the engineer as he operates the train around the property. Among the rail cars on display is The Superb, a Pullman Co.-built private car President Warren G. Harding used during his 1923 “Voyage of Understanding.” Harding died before finishing the trip, and the car carried the president’s coffin to Washington, D.C., for the state funeral and then to Marion, Ohio, for his burial. The car is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum hosts special events throughout the year, including an annual photo contest in February, Caboose Days in April, the Fast Track 5K in May, Locomotive Celebration in June, Train-orTreat in October and Polar Express Experience in December. For more information about the exhibits, prices and special events, visit www.SoutheasternRailwayMuseum.org.

Lane Southern Orchards April showers bring May flowers . . . and, they bring Sweet, Georgia Peaches too! If you find yourself traveling near Central Georgia this summer, you should visit Lane Southern Orchards, the country’s largest peach and pecan grower. Passing by Exit 142 off I-75 without stopping at our Roadside Market would be like passing by Grandma’s without stopping. We’re anticipating Peach Season to begin around May 20th. If you can’t make it to the Farm, no worries, we can ship our sweet peaches right to your door or send them as a gift. Along with peaches, you will find other local, seasonal produce like Vidalia onions, sweet corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, shelled peas and beans. In June and July, you can grab a bucket and pick your own blueberries and blackberries. Enjoy southern style cooking at the Peachtree Café. For breakfast we offer buttermilk pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy and more. For lunch, order from our regular menu or enjoy one of our daily lunch specials. Don’t forget to save room for our home-made peach cobbler and ice cream. Kids can play on the playground with real tractors and make memories that will never be forgotten. Take I-75 to Exit 142 in Fort Valley, GA. For more information call 800-277-3224 or visit www.lanesouthernorchards.com.

Freedom Celebration in Warm Springs The historic town of Warm Springs, Georgia is the home of FDR’s Little White House and receives more than 100,000 visitors a year. Those visitors absolutely love the quaint little town with its unique shopping, great restaurants, a wine and craft beer tasting room, and lots of southern hospitality. This year the town will be hosting its second annual Freedom Celebration. This event, which was held the first time in 2017 was used to kick off the unique Marvel Comics Geo Quest Trail a very popular addition to the other two geocache trails in the county: The Real Woodbury’s Zombie Quest and the popular Magic City Rail Quest. Freedom Celebration event organizers invited special guests to participate in the launching of this event, including costumed Spider Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk. In addition, children from throughout the community were invited to participate in the parade by decorating their bicycles, tricycles, golf carts, and wagons with Independence Day décor. The day concluded with outdoor kids’ activities, music, and great food. This year’s event will be held on June 30th and will also include the Freedom Celebration Parade. Come out and enjoy live music, kid and family activities and sidewalk sales. Festivities start at 10am. For more information, contact 706-655-3322 or visit meriwethertourism.com. Meriwether County has established a working collaboration with Serenbe Playhouse, located at Chattahoochee Hills, GA to bring some of their “kid-friendly” productions to our community. These productions offer high quality entertainment to our community and help to elevate our Arts Meriwether initiative. They also expose our elementary children to an art form that they otherwise would have very little opportunity to experience. The great thing about working with Serenbe Playhouse is that the actors are so very engaging and interactive with the children. Last year they brought Charlotte’s Web to Quercus Farm in Gay, followed by a performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at the Cotton Pickin’ Fairgrounds, also in Gay. The benefit to Serenbe is that it gives greater exposure to their repertoire of performances and through this outreach encourages more patrons to attend performances at their location. For more information visit: www.serenbeplayhouse.com.
