P Theatre P Music P Dance P winterfest2008 Performing Arts Festival in Columbus Shop for fine art surrounded by live entertainment at winterfest 2008 – A Visual & Performing Arts Festival which will be held Dec. 5-7 at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts in Columbus. Winterfest provides a unique opportunity for all of the arts to “take center stage.” Artists’ booths on the orchestra and mezzanine levels of the Grand Lobby will feature paintings, pottery, jewelry, glass works of art, photography, and more! Over the weekend two ticketed events will be held in the Bill Heard Theatre and one in Legacy Hall. A Skaggs Family Christmas on Dec. 5 will feature virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Ricky Skaggs and the celebrated musical clan, The Whites, and their families performing Christmas classics and brand new holiday gems. Performing on Dec. 6 will be The Three Irish Tenors who, with seven best-selling albums and countless performances in major concert halls across the globe, are three of the most celebrated vocalists in the world. They come backed by a 30-piece onstage orchestra. The Empire Brass Quintet will perform on Dec. 7. Shopping hours for winterfest 2008 will be Friday from 5-10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m.10 p.m., and Sunday from noon-5 p.m. Admission will be free. Swamp Gravy on Stage in Colquitt Next March Swamp Gravy returned to the stage for its 16th Season in October and will reprise the performance for audiences throughout the month of March 2009. As “Swampers” have said since 1992, “We’ve got a story to tell, and theatre goers say this is the best one yet.” The story takes place during the Great Depression when a WPA oral history collector drops in on the quaint Southern town. Christmas Tour of Homes in Madison The Morgan County Historical Society will present its biennial Christmas Tour of Homes in Madison on December 5-6. The tour will showcase an intimate view of Madison’s past, a past filled with excellent examples of Greek Revival, Victorian, and Craftsman architecture. Stroll tree-lined streets in this enchanting antebellum town to see the homes beautifully decorated for the holidays. Christmas in Georgia! Calico Holiday Arts & Crafts Show in Moultrie The Calico Holiday Arts and Crafts Show will be held in Moultrie on November 8-9. This year promises many new crafts along with favorites from past shows. Among the one-of- a-kind items will be beautiful handcrafted iron home and garden décor, whimsical Christmas decorations, architectural décor, and outdoor seasonal decorations. It is among the best small museums of vintage motorcycles in the Southeast and currently the largest in Georgia. Glynn Art s ’ 17th Annual Christmas Craft Festival at St. Simons Island Santa’s elves will stop in St. Simons Island on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6-7, and show their best artwork and crafts at the 17th Annual Christmas Craft Festival. The exhibitors will set up in Postell Park at the Pier Village, and attendees can view their work from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Everything from oil and watercolor paintings, to functional pottery, to breathtaking photography of the area can be viewed at the festival. There will be several jewelers with many different styles and methods as well as hand-made ornaments, soaps, and toys. The annual festival will have several woodworkers who create beautiful, functional, and ornamental pieces. For gardeners on the Christmas list, see the garden art that is available! Glynn Art’s Gallery at 319 Mallery Street will also open during the festival where full size carousel horses carved by Janis Rodriguez can be seen. In addition, miniature houses and a medieval “Dragon Hall” built by Carol Hanneld will be on display, changing the gallery into a magical wonderful place. Nights of Lights Celebration at Guido Gardens in Metter The Nights of Lights Celebration, which is presented at Guido Gardens in Metter each night in December from 6-9:30 p.m., will use more than one million lights to provide a unique Christmas extravaganza. Admission is free. Children of all ages will thrill to the animated light displays, the rainbow, Noah’s Art, and the walk along Candy Cane Lane. A patriotic display will feature an American flag, the Liberty Bell, and a 15-foot silhouette of the Statue of Liberty. Visitors will enjoy the Ten Commandments display, an animated hummingbird and flower, tree-climbing bears, colorful peacock, growing flower, animated fisherman and boat, and the globe of the world with the Sower. A Children’s Corner will feature a Gingerbread House and couple, Frosty the Snowman, Bambi, and an animated lighted carousel. Visitors can also stop for a brief moment in the glass-enclosed prayer chapel and linger at the animated stable scene which includes Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus, the shepherds, and the Wise Men. McDonough Christmas Tour of Homes The 11th Annual McDonough Christmas Tour of Homes will be held Saturday, December 13, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Seven beautifully decorated homes will be featured in and around the McDonough Area on this selfguided tour. The tour will begin at McDonough First United Methodist Church at 151 Macon Street. Tour participants will begin the day with heavy holiday hors d’oeuvres in the church’s elegantly decorated Coan Fellowship Hall. During this time, event participants may participate in an auction to purchase one of over 50 special holiday gift baskets. The themed baskets are a favorite attraction each year and offer themes sure to draw everyone's attention. Many of the baskets are valued at well over $75, but shoppers may purchase a $1 ticket to enter in a drawing for each basket. Event tickets purchased in advance are $12, and $15 the day of the tour. Atlanta Camping & R V Show in January The 34th annual Atlanta Camping and RV Show will be held January 22-25, 2009 at the Atlanta Exposition Center South on Jonesboro Road, Exit 55 off I-185.
