MOZART & JAZZ
9TH SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
Cyprus Symphony Orchestra
12th – 18th October 2019
Various performances island wide. Tickets: paphosmusiclovers.com or cyso.org.cy
Rialto Theatre, Limassol For further details: www.isffc.com.cy
“Three concertos and a pavane or three twentieth-century works alongside a Classical masterpiece”. Both fittingly describe this mesmerising programme, yet the concert’s title reads, more appropriately, ‘Mozart and Jazz’!
The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus is the official competition festival for short films in Cyprus, showcasing and celebrating an outstanding narrative, animated, documentary and experimental original short film content. Starting from 2019, the ISFFC is an official partner festival of the European Film Academy.
Mozart’s wonderful Clarinet concerto will be interpreted by the renowned soloist, Wenzel Fuchs, Berlin Philharmonic’s principal clarinetist. Next to Mozart’s concerto, all three more modern compositions by Ravel, Copland and Schickele bear a connection to jazz music by integrating jazz stylistic features and effects. In his Concerto for the chamber orchestra, Peter Schickele uses extensive jazz-blues inspired pentatonic scale runs, whilst Aaron Copland, in his Concerto for clarinet, uses slapping basses and whacking harp sounds. As for Maurice Ravel’s masterpiece, Pavane for a dead princess, it provided the musical substance to several popular and jazz musical adaptations, the most notable of which being ‘The Lamp Is Low’, recorded in 1939. This event is supported by the Paphos Municipality, Larnaca Municipality and the Austrian Embassy. Taking place in Nicosia on 17th October, in Larnaca on 18th October and in Paphos on 19th October.

October 2019
The international competition programme is curated by Cypriot film directors Alexia Roider and Ioakim Mylonas. The Festival will culminate its programme of events with the Awards ceremony on October 18th. An international jury, the members of which will be announced soon, will present the winners with the following awards: 1st Prize for Best Short Film, Best Director Award, 2nd Prize for Best Short Film, 1st Prize for Best National Film, 2nd Prize for Best National Film, Best Documentary Award, Best Performance Award in a Cypriot Film sponsored by the Limassol Municipality, Best Cypriot Director Award ‘Dinos Katsourides’, Best Cinematography Award and Student Jury Award for Best Music Video.

‘OXI’ DAY PARADE
AMPERSAND AUTUMN SALE DAY
National Traditional Celebration
Saturday 19th October
Monday 28th October
Starting at 9 am – FOR ONE DAY ONLY www.ampersandinteriors.eu
For further details: publicholidays.eu
As described by publicholidays.eu, “OXI Day is celebrated on 28 October each year in Cyprus, in Greece and by Greeks around the world. It is a day to remember the famous pronouncement made by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas during the Second World War. The word ‘OXI’ simply means ‘No’. It is the word Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas used in 1940 to Mussolini’s spokesperson when asked if Axis forces could use Greek territory to gain access to areas of Europe not already occupied by Hitler and Mussolini. Metaxas stalwartly said ‘No!’ Cities and towns across Cyprus and Greece celebrate OXI Day with military parades that close down most centres. School students and veterans march in a parade carrying banners and flags of Cyprus and Greece. Political speeches are made and the day is focused on celebrating the heroes of the nation. Cyprus particularly considers the day as one to not only remember the bravery of the people who walked in the past, but to focus on the future and to believe that its people can have strong and independent freedom and prosperity.”
People travel far and wide for The One Day Sale at Ampersand Interiors. They are getting ready for their Autumn Event which will be held on Saturday 19th October.
As always, there will be discounts of up to 50% on many exclusive items including all cushions, rugs, ex-display sofa sets and stylish home accessories. It is the right time of year to start preparing your homes for the cooler weather and the run-up to Christmas. Andreas and Glen have stocked up on wall art, table lamps and much more for this special day. The new, mirrored furniture has been a huge success and items on display will be reduced by 20% on the sale day. New curtain and upholstery fabrics have recently arrived with collections from “Harlequin” to include a range of stunning wallpapers. Any curtain, blind or upholstery orders will be offered with a 20% discount for a period of two weeks from the sale day.
There is no better time to pop along, enjoy their hospitality and pick up a bargain to add a touch of style to your home. It is also the perfect opportunity for completing a full room make over! Glen, Andreas, Youla, Emma and their team of helpers are looking forward to seeing you.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“WE NEED TO PROMOTE PAFOS AS A REGIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR EDUCATION.” MEET PHEDON PHEDONOS Mayor of Pafos
In an exclusive interview for Cyprus in Style Magazine, the Mayor of Pafos, Phedon Phedonos, reveals an insight into the redevelopment of Pafos and his future plans for the City. He has made a huge contribution to the new face of Pafos through his social and political efforts. Phedonos grew up in Pafos and after his national service, he studied International and European Economic Studies at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). He later gained a Masters in International and European Studies from the same university and also holds a law degree from Neapolis University in Pafos. He lives in Pafos with his wife and two children. Not afraid to tackle issues head on or express his own opinion, we meet the man behind the transformation of Pafos.
HOW DID YOU ENTER INTO POLITICS?
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM YOU FACE IN PAFOS?
It was over thirty years ago, as a young student, I developed an interest in all aspects of the community and society in which we live. It fascinated me and I knew I wanted to make a difference. I had always had a strong interest in politics, but when I went to university I became involved on a more serious level. I was President of the Students’ Association when I studied at Athens University. At the age of 25, I became the District Secretary of The Democratic Rally Political Party in Pafos. In 2011, I became Municipal Councillor of Pafos Municipality and then went on to become Mayor of Pafos in 2015.
We need to increase the population of our city. We want to attract all nationalities to Pafos, but we want the Cypriot people who grew up here to stay, and not lose them to other locations. We are working on building a new university for Pafos as we need our young people to finish their studies here, rather than abroad. We need to make sure that they return. It is a challenge to create the right environment for them to stay and make Pafos their home.
12
October 2019
We have two very strong pillars in Pafos - tourism and property development - but we need to create a third through the creation of further educational establishments. This will help our economy.
“WE ARE WORKING ON PROMOTING HIGH LEVEL EDUCATION AS WE NEED OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO STAY IN PAFOS, RATHER THAN ABROAD.”
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON 5G? This is a very big issue but it is difficult for me to give a clear opinion until all the facts are in. We are waiting for the official statement by the Ministry of Health and also rely on our advisers for further information. Our priority is with the people of Pafos and their health. We will wait to see the statement from Parliament and take it from there. TELL US ABOUT FUTURE PLANS FOR PAFOS. The two pillars of tourism and property development are not sustainable in the long-term. Our aim is to make Pafos an appealing destination for companies to relocate. We want to attract innovative, technological companies to ensure we will always be able to employ our young people. Pafos has so much to offer any company looking for a new base to relocate to. We are by the sea, we have affordable housing, a beautiful town centre and the space to build new buildings to house these companies. In the future, I would like to see Pafos as a smart and digital city. We are working on a centre for innovation, technology and entrepreneurship which will help to create wealth in our region. This will be called the Pafos Innovation Institute. It will give great opportunities to students from Egypt, Jordan and Israel. We need to promote Pafos as a regional centre of excellence for education, as we are in a very strategic geographical location. WHEN YOU THINK OF THE CHANGES YOU HAVE MADE OVER THE YEARS, WHAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD? It has been wonderful to see all the changes that have occurred over the last few years. I am particularly proud of the development that has taken place around the Old Town in the centre of the City. I have played an active role in this and feel that everyone involved should be congratulated for the change in Pafos. Pafos is changing but we are far from finished and our future projects will certainly enhance our city. The main centre, Kennedy Square, has changed beyond recognition and is now alive with locals and visitors.
“I KNEW I WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE”. 13
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Current projects include the reconstruction of roads and the development of Green Linear Parks to improve everyone’s quality of daily life. Of course we have our critics, as some people do not like to see change. We believe that what we have done within the constraints of our budgets has certainly improved our city and the day-to-day life of our citizens – our citizens are always our priority. WHO HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR LIFE? To be honest, many people have influenced me throughout my life but my main philosophy is always to rely on instinct. I have always tried to absorb knowledge from various sources and use it to the best of my ability. TELL US ABOUT FUTURE LINKS WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. We are working very hard on creating international relationships across the world. We are the last Eastern European Union country on the map. It is our intention to form a network with our neighbouring countries.
14
October 2019
“WE ARE CREATING A CENTRE FOR INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP WHICH WILL HELP TO CREATE WEALTH IN OUR REGION”.
We are developing strong relations with Alexandria in Egypt, Herzliya in Israel and Amman in Jordan. We are also increasing links with Beirut and are very pleased that a direct flight was recently introduced from Beirut to Pafos Airport. It is very important to create and work for diplomacy with these countries. Our cities need to work together for a peaceful solution. This will allow us to spread innovation and development. Pafos is a bridge to these countries from Europe.
“… EVERYONE INVOLVED SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED FOR THE CHANGE IN PAFOS”.
15
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
WHAT ABOUT THE PROJECTS YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OVER THE YEARS? There are many and some of them are ongoing. It is a good feeling to see the positive changes in Pafos since I became Mayor. Of course, there are many more developments we are planning for our city, but for now we are very proud of our achievements as a team in Pafos. It is probably easier to list them so that people are aware of all the changes that have taken place: 1. The renovation of the traditional shopping area in the Old Town and Kennedy Square. 2. The enhancement and renovation of the Municipal Markideio Theatre. 3. The connection and promotion of the squares around the Town Hall: October 28th Square, Kosti Palama and Dionysio Solomou. 4. Remodelling and highlighting areas in the Moutallos District. 5. Regeneration of the Square of Administration and the area around the District Administration Buildings. 6. The full restoration of Ibrahim’s Khan. 7. Improvements on sections of Evagora Pallikaridis Ave, Andrea Geroudi, Andrea Tselepou and Zenos Kitiies Street. 8. Renovation and upgrade of the Municipal Market. 9. Creation of a new Vegetable Market.
15. Creation of 12 new playgrounds and green areas. 16. Creation of 2 new linear parks, East and Northwest of Pafos. 17. Creation of the Pafos Central Municipal Park. 18. Construction of the Social Welfare Centre for children and the elderly. 19. Unification of the Craftsmanship Area. 20. Construction for the Pafos Innovation Institute. 21. Renovation and configuration of 40 work places for “start-ups” in central Pafos. 22. Installation of “Smart Pillars” for street lights. 23. Installation of “Smart Bus Stops”. 24. Digitalisation of all data in the Municipal Technical Department. 25. Investment in an electric-powered bus for free visitor transport. 26. Creation of a Smart Mobile Application to provide information and technological advantages. 27. Renovation of Fellachoglou Street which incorporates 2 new parking areas. 28. Road paving and pavement construction in various areas. 29. Renovation of the traditional central area in the Anavargos District.
10. Unification of Kato Pafos Archaeological Sites.
30. Renovation of the southern part of the city’s shopping centre.
11. Creation of a South and West pedestrian path in the coastal area of Kato Pafos.
31. Redevelopment of the Theoskepastis Square and the surrounding streets in Kato Pafos.
12. Improvements to the Northwest Pafos Sea Front near The Venus Beach Hotel.
32. The external lighting of the public buildings in the Town Centre - Town Hall, Municipal Library, public schools, 28th October Square and fountain of “Erotas”.
13. Creation of a new cemetery. 14. Restoration of the centre of the traditional fishing part of Kato Pafos.
“Paphos is changing and this luxury lifestyle magazine is an excellent platform for the promotion of our town and its people. Well done and good luck to the team at Cyprus in Style Magazine.”

PROCEDURE OF BUYING PROPERTY IN CYPRUS Barrister at Law Gray’s Inn Head of Conveyancing and Immigration Department of Andreas Demetriades & Co LLC Article by Demetris Demetriades Cyprus has always been a popular destination for foreigners looking to invest in property. → SIX USEFUL GUIDELINES TO ENSURE THE PURCHASE OF YOUR PROPERTY IS A STRESS & HASSLE FREE PROCESS: 1. During this period, your lawyer will continue collecting all the necessary information relating to the legal status of the property and move forward with all the required Land Registry and Planning Department searches.
6. The final stage involves having the Title Deeds to the property transferred into your name at the Land Registry. This is also when the full and remaining payment of the purchase price is settled. Once complete, a fee of 1.5% - 4% is also charged for the Transfer of the Title Deeds into your name. Immediately thereafter, you should apply to the water and electricity authorities to transfer the utilities into your name.
2. Be aware that finished properties are purchased as seen, therefore, should you wish to have the property surveyed, you will need to appoint a surveyor and obtain a Report prior to the signing of the Contract of Sale. 3. Provided no issues arise from the legal searches, your lawyer will then go on to draft the Contract of Sale which must be approved by all parties in the transaction. 4. The Contract of Sale will need to be stamped and registered at the Land Registry for specific performance and, at the same time, an approximate 20% - 30% of the agreed purchase price is paid. 5. If you are a non-EU National, you will need to submit an application to the local District Office to obtain their consent for the purchase of the property. This is a simple process whereby consent is granted speedily. For more guidance on buying a property in Cyprus, please call our offices on +357 26 811 668 or email ddlaw@logos.cy.net By following these simple steps, you ensure that the purchase of your property remains a safe and stress-free process!

“SECRET VILLAGE ESCAPE
JUST 15 MINUTES FROM PAPHOS TOWN.” Koili Village, Paphos District Welcome to Koili, a picturesque countryside village situated only 15 minutes up the hill from Kato Paphos. In this month’s edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, our selected Featured Property is a traditional stone house which has been beautifully renovated by the current owners over the last 10 years. It is positioned in the heart of Koili Village at an altitude that escapes the worst of the summer heat and humidity. GUIDE PRICE: €230,000 Open the wooden gates surrounded by Bougainvillea and enter the luscious green courtyard garden, where trees and plants are neatly placed in flower pots and terracotta planters to create a riot of colour and beautiful scents. In the centre is a large wooden pergola built to provide shade and coolness in this oasis, away from the hurly burly of modern life.
“Designed to high standards with all the usual mod-cons, but without losing the traditional character!”
There is a stairway leading to the roof terrace but the house itself is a 3 bedroom, single storey gem. The walls are built traditionally to create a cooling effect in the summer and a warm cosy feel in the winter. There are 3 separate wooden doorways leading into the courtyard; one from the kitchen, one from the hallway connecting the main house to the bedrooms and the last is from the main bedroom at the end of the garden. The house has views from the courtyard and roof terrace of the surrounding mountains and valleys of the Cypriot countryside.
The first two bedrooms share the quaintly-designed shower room and toilet in the centre of the house. The second bedroom can also be used for an airy and bright office space, as it has large wooden windows overlooking the flower beds and garden outside.
The open-plan kitchen is connected to the pantry and dining area, which then leads you into the surprisingly spacious lounge, complete with a log burner stove installed in the fireplace and a traditional Cypriot beamed ceiling of varnished logs and bull rushes.

“Pioneering and setting the standards for cable tensioned structures since 2002.”
In this month’s edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, the ‘Featured Business’ has been awarded to Shadeports Plus Ltd. We spoke to Christopher Kafizas about how he and his team became industry leaders. They have used over 49 tons of material and covered over 110,000 sq m of the island since their launch in 2002.
qualified and trained architects and engineers. Shadeports Plus Ltd is a family run business and in 2009, Kafizas’ brother also joined the team as a Director.
Kafizas was born in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. His father, George, was born in Cyprus but lived most of his life in Zimbabwe. He was very successful in the rag trade there.
They built their factory in 2011 and have just recently acquired a second factory next door. It is here from where the business is run and all products are manufactured here in Paphos. The first is now used for steel and woodwork, while the new factory is fabric based and used for cutting, sewing and general maintenance.
Kafizas worked in South Africa and America, with short stints in Australia and the UK before making the decision, with his father, to move to Paphos. It was following the economic collapse in Zimbabwe, when Kafizas and his father joined forces and moved to Cyprus to start a business specialising in ‘quality shade solutions’ for residential and commercial properties. They launched from a small shop behind the General Hospital and now manage a team of 20 staff including

They are the preferred shade suppliers for the United Nations and all British Bases in Cyprus, Amathus Hotel, Louis Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel and Kanika Group Hotels to name a few. FEATURED BUSINESS
“We are exclusive agents in Cyprus for our high-quality all-weather protection fabrics which are imported from South Africa, from the world’s leading colour shade and agricultural netting manufacturers. They export to over 65 countries worldwide including America, Australia and countries within Europe and UAE. This means our clients receive a 10 year guarantee linked direct to the fabric manufacturers and not just to a retail outlet where other shade businesses tend to buy from.” Kafizas said. Kafizas uses Colourshade which is the most durable and colourful decorative shade netting available on the market. This contemporary all-climate protection is the best solution for industrial, commercial and domestic applications and comes in an exciting range of trendy fade-resistant colours. Colourshade is manufactured using Virgin High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which offers the best UV stabilisers, quality refined pigments and high light-fastness properties, all of which provide excellent strength properties for the individual yarns in the shade netting.
Kafizas is a firm believer in maintaining close alliances with his partners in South Africa and also Australia.
“Regular visits to both places keeps us up-to-date and informed on all the latest technologies and developments.” he stated. As the premier supplier of sun/UV and hail protective canopies in the Cypriot market at present, the element of safety remains at the core of every design and installation process. Kafizas takes pride in his ability to deliver bespoke shading solutions to suit the architectural design of any external space. Since 2004, his most popular selling product is the ‘architectural shade sail’. With the correct maintenance and aftercare service provided, Kafizas confirmed they have never had an issue with UV degradation in over 18 years. We look forward to learning more about their new, soon to be released, range of products and services - all in the realm of Outdoor Lifestyle.

BUSINESS INSIGHT
“DELICIOUS & BEAUTIFUL MASTERPIECE CAKES” MEET JO KUFLIK Love Island Cakes
Jo Kuflik runs a boutique cake business in Kissonerga. It is called Love Island Cakes and has just celebrated its 10th birthday. We visited Kuflik to find out more about her background and what led her into making cakes for a living.
26
October 2019
BUSINESS INSIGHT It was originally Kuflik’s mother, Jackie, that started the business back in 2009. Word got around that she used to make cakes in the UK and the demand became clear. ‘Making cakes’ is a bit of an understatement though; Jackie has an interesting background which incorporates gold medals, a position as the Chairman of Judges, writing books and designing cakes for the UK sugar industry, as well as a story of teaching in a Bakery and Sugarcraft College. This teaching experience has become the basis of ongoing training for members of the team and her extensive experience is what Love Island Cakes is founded on, and one reason for their huge success in Cyprus.
We later discovered that their story goes back even further. Kuflik’s great grandfather was also a baker and her grandmother, a total whizz with the most difficult of pastry – filo – to create the family favourite, apple strudel. Speaking to Kuflik after knowing all of this, we are not surprised that she has a love and talent for baking! With Cyprus positioned as the number one location for destination weddings in Europe, it is clear why their main focus is currently on wedding cakes. Kuflik receives orders from across the island for delicious and beautiful masterpiece cakes to satisfy the demands of discerning wedding couples getting married here. The initial ‘Cake Consultation’ is a special treat as each client is presented with the opportunity to taste the wide spectrum of delicious cakes and fillings on offer. Whether you are planning a birthday party, wedding, christening or any other special occasion that requires a centrepiece cake, Love Island Cakes seems to have it all.
“The most satisfying part of my job is to receive feedback that a customer loved something we made especially for them. To hear that they love the look, taste and the service we provided, is very rewarding and it’s wonderful to know that we made their special day a bit more special.”
Five years ago, with Kuflik firmly at the helm of the business, they opened a shop. They filled it with new and upcycled furniture (also for sale) and by the end of the first month, were busy trying to find more furniture for their customers to sit on. Kuflik has always been a great shopper with excellent taste and has now expanded the business to offer so much more. Greeting cards (including some very naughty ones), candles, gifts and, for Christmas, more tempting items will be available including a big selection of board games, Christmas decorations and unusual gifts.
Sweet & Savoury! It is here that you will find real doughnuts every day, fresh cream cakes on a Friday and perfectly French macarons. Customers can drop by the shop on a daily basis for tea, coffee or soft drinks and choose from a selection of cakes including gluten-free and vegan choices. Now, there is even a hot cabinet with savoury pastries to suit vegans, vegetarians and any of us who enjoy a hot savoury treat. Everything edible is made by hand, from scratch, by a dedicated team who are fanatical about taste and flavour! It is the attention to detail which brings customers back, time and time again to enjoy the new treats, as well as the ‘old favourites’. Fashions change with cakes as they do with clothes, so the team are always working on new, decorative techniques. As the wedding season starts to draw to a close for another year, the team at Love Island Cakes are now preparing and planning for Christmas. They now offer a range of quality stationery, similar to the ranges supplied to John Lewis, Fenwicks and Paperchase in the UK. Pop in and see Jo and the fantastic team, enjoy a delicious cake and make the most out of her unique selection of quirky gifts and cards.

FEATURED NEW BUSINESS
WEALTH PROTECTION Storage & Trade of Precious Metals STEFAN NOLTE
Managing Director, Liemeta ME Ltd
In this month’s edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, the ‘New Featured Business’ article has been awarded to Liemeta ME Ltd, a company that provides for the safe and sophisticated storage of physical precious metals, such as, gold, silver, platinum and palladium, at its prime location in Liechtenstein. We spoke to Managing Director, Stefan Nolte, to find out more about this new niche business. Established earlier this year, Liemeta ME Ltd was incorporated in Cyprus, as a subsidiary of the prestigious Liemeta AG in Liechtenstein, worldwide referred to as Liemeta. In principal, Liemeta stores and preserves your wealth, i.e. your physical precious metals, at its highly sophisticated and state-of-the-art storage facilities in Liechtenstein, in your name, with all the adequate paperwork and documentation to ensure you are the true legal owner of your precious metals. For professionals in the trade, this type of storage is called ‘segregated and allocated’. “Globalisation brought people together but also led to global vulnerability … long-lasting recessions, political uncertainty, weakening currencies, defaulting banks and even countries … these are all risks affecting the global economy”, Nolte explained. Liechtenstein has a long tradition of sophisticated property protection due to its excellent worldwide reputation for being politically and economically stable, with no public debt history since 1719! Liechtenstein is also part of the customs union with Switzerland and is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). All precious metals at Liemeta, regardless of who owns them, are fully insured and include coverage of embezzlement and terrorism. Every client receives an Evidence of Insurance Certificate (EOI) and is fully protected from any unlikely third-party claims made against the company. Liemeta issues transparent and clear documentation to

each client, as detailed evidence of their assets in storage. According to Nolte, in terms of the total value of client assets stored, Liemeta is one of the largest highsecurity storage facilities existing in Europe today. Liemeta acts as custodian for both private and institutional clients such as banks, insurance companies, attorneys, funds and fund management companies. Liemeta is a private company and therefore, independent from banks and other financial institutions. The client, therefore has the opportunity to store their wealth safely and protected from the risks of the banking sector. In addition, their wealth is also protected from currency and political risks. Proudly, Liemeta have also just received their Shariah Compliance Certificate (Fatwa) confirming that operations and procedures regarding the sale and custody storage of physical gold and silver, are in line with AAOIFI Shariah Standard № 57 on Gold. This is a very positive development for the Middle Eastern market, which is part of their target area here in Cyprus. Nolte was born and raised in Lübeck, Germany, and started out on his professional journey in 1984. Since he left Germany, he has lived and worked in several countries in Asia and the Middle East before settling down in Cyprus in 1999. Having worked for so many companies in the past, it was natural for Nolte to start his own company, namely Shanda Consult Ltd in 2008, which is still highly successful today. With his passion for voluntary association work, Nolte is the President of the Cyprus Germany Business Association and also on the Board of the Cyprus Kuwait Business Association. Liemeta is also equipped for certified and fully insured art storage in specially designated, climate-controlled areas of their facilities in Liechtenstein. A showroom facility is also included.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“OUR MOST IMPORTANT FAMILY VALUE IS TO ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF ONE ANOTHER.” MEET ARISTI ANDRIOTIS
MANAGING DIRECTOR, THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PAPHOS
Aristi Andriotis was born and raised in Cyprus as one of fourteen children. She is a passionate ambassador for The International School of Paphos and is dedicated to her mission to promote, to the world, the high standard of private educational facilities available here in Cyprus.
“WE NEED TO PROMOTE OUR COUNTRY AND LET PEOPLE KNOW THE QUALITY OF OUR EDUCATION.” TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I was born in Statos, a small mountain village in the Paphos district. I was one of fourteen children which I believe moulded me into a person more adaptable to dealing with a variety of situations. It also made me more co-operative and willing to listen to the needs of others. Hard work was a trait embedded into us from a young age, but our most significant family value was always to take care of one another. Although my father took on many different jobs to support us, he worked mainly as a farmer and always stressed the importance of a good work ethic and education. My mother was the rock of the family. She is a remarkable individual: strong, selfless, humble, loving and patient. She brought unity and structure to the family and continues to advise us.
“With love, honesty and patience, you can achieve anything in life”, she says, now aged 93. At the age of twelve, I moved to Paphos so that I could attend high school. In our mountain village there was no secondary school, so we had to move away from our family home. This was quite normal, then, for people from the villages. I loved returning to school every September and relished the idea of meeting new friends and acquiring new knowledge. We understood, that to progress in life, a good education was essential. Most of my siblings went on to higher education.

October 2019
I finished my school education at the age of 18 and sat my entrance examinations for Greek universities. After much deliberation over a period of 6 months, I decided to specialise in humanities and studied English Language & Literature at the Aristotelion University in Thessaloniki. WHY DID YOU RELOCATE TO AMERICA AND HOW DID YOU ENJOY IT? Upon completion of my studies, I returned home but realised that Cyprus did not offer the opportunities in my field at that time. I then decided to move to America where I had family in New York. There, I continued to study and completed my Masters Degree in Media and Communication. It was the mid 1980’s and there were many avenues to explore in the media business in New York. I spent some time working for a local radio station which brought me in touch with audiences from all over the world. I was later offered the chance to work for a citywide human services organisation as a summer intern. I enjoyed the role so much and was delighted when I progressed through the organisation to a high level. It was a multi-service, non-profit organisation that implemented programmes to help immigrants, senior citizens, the mentally ill, families and young people. Thus, I was able to be assimilated into the fabric of New York and make personal contact with various communities.
It reinforced how the public sector can work in synchronisation with the private sector to achieve amazing results. We developed specific programmes for segments of the population that needed help. The organisation grew over the years and we widened the scope of services offered. This very much shaped my leadership style and taught me how services operate from the ground up. We must always stay in touch, allowing staff and stakeholders to contribute at all levels. I pride myself on listening to what people tell me and always take their views into consideration.
“IT IS MY DREAM TO SEE A FREE CYPRUS ONE DAY.”
I loved working in a multi-national, cultural environment. In New York there are over 500 languages spoken but everyone preserved their own identity whilst at the same time working together. New York’s remarkable ethnic and racial diversity, its immigration history and its institutions have combined to make it a receptive city in many ways. Despite this, unfortunately, I could see that a lot of the people were very lonely. They had no further support, family values disintegrated, and this was poignant for me to witness. I also could not resign myself to the crime rate and feared for both my husband (whom I had met in New York) and young son, Nicos. Children were brought up to be suspicious and fearful, not trusting people around them. That was not the upbringing I wanted for my child and that was one of the reasons why we decided to return home to Paphos. HOW DID YOU START AT ISOP? On my return from America, I was presented with the opportunity to become a part of the old International School in 2000. I started as an assistant to the Managing Director. With my background in education and development programmes, I had the relevant experience to give advice. Back then, the school only had 120 or so students and it was in a much smaller, old building. I really enjoyed working at the school and could envisage great potential for development and improvement. I was later entrusted with the role of Managing Director and started to make improvements, with the co-operation of the Head of our school, the support of the Board of Directors and an admirable team of staff. Our primary goal was to enhance the curriculum, improve the facilities and increase the number of pupils.
“OUR VISION IS TO EXCEL BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF EXCELLENCE IN STANDARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT, BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND HOLISTICALLY.” 31
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“WE ARE A DISCIPLINED SCHOOL THAT PROMOTES GOOD MANNERS AND RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER.” Some of the original staff members are still at the school and we even have one member of staff who has been here since 1987. Despite our growth, most of the staff remain with us for long periods of time. With Cyprus joining the European Union in 2004, this brought an influx of families to Paphos. British families wanted to follow the British curriculum, which is what we offered. Today we have students from all over the world. Our students are attracted to our school, not just for our fantastic facilities and excellent academic record, but also for the way we offer pastoral care to each and every one of them. I believe that through balance and harmony, excellence can be achieved. We never neglect the pastoral welfare of the pupils, as we want them to develop as individuals. Through our 32 year history, with teamwork, optimism, prudent planning and considerable investment on behalf of our shareholders, we have succeeded in becoming one of the market leaders in education. WHAT ARE YOUR HAPPIEST MOMENTS AT THE SCHOOL? There are too many to mention but when we moved to our current new location, that was an inspiring personal highlight for me. I am always very proud when I see our children receiving awards – not just academic ones, but also awards for commendable behaviour, artistic expression or athletic performance. We are a disciplined school that promotes good manners and respect for one another. I really enjoy watching the children arrive at school and seeing how happy they look. They enter with open minds to receive what we are going to teach them and instil in them.

“WE ARE PIONEERS IN THIS AREA AS OUR BOARDING SCHOOL IS THE FIRST, PURPOSEBUILT, ON-CAMPUS FACILITY IN CYPRUS.” TELL US ABOUT THE NEW BOARDING HOUSE AT THE SCHOOL. This September, we opened our Boarding House. Our aim is to position ISOP as the premier boarding and day school in the region. It will allow further development of visiting schools, exchange programmes and residential summer school on campus, benefitting not only our school but also our town. We are pioneers in this area as our Boarding school is the first, purpose-built, on-campus facility in Cyprus. We decided to build the Boarding House after seeing the growing demand for boarding when the children’s parents were away. It might be that some parents will only use it occasionally, but they know they have this facility available to them. Also, the demand from pupils overseas meant that we needed to offer a safe, secure environment for them in the form of our new Boarding House. Our state-of-the-art facility was designed by the wellrenowned architect, Andreas Vardas. It was constructed by Aristo Developers within one year and cost over 3 million euros. It is equipped with all the systems necessary for the pupils’ safety and comfort. More importantly, the Boarding House is designed to offer a homely experience for our students (age 12-18) and is built to environmentally-friendly international standards, which is important to us throughout the whole school. They are offered a choice of single, double or triple rooms. Our Head Chef offers nutritious and well-balanced meals through our newly-refurbished school cafeteria/restaurant. A live-in, experienced House Head and Senior House Parent, who previously worked in and ran prestigious Boarding Schools in Switzerland, are already in place, supported by the academic and pastoral team of the school, as well as the nurse, the counsellor and the housekeeping staff. They, along with our admissions staff, are eager to welcome the students and are available to give tours to anyone interested in visiting the house.
WHAT ARE YOUR CORE VALUES AT THE SCHOOL? They are the quintessential principles which enhance and deepen the soul of any institution. Teamwork, responsibility, respect, generosity and honesty are some of our values. Our mission is to promote a well-rounded education in partnership with families and the wider community; to create an inspirational environment in which equal opportunities empower students to achieve their personal best; to enable our pupils to become critical, independent thinkers who embrace life-long learning and leave their indelible mark as global citizens.
Our motto,‘PAN METRON ARISTON,’ is derived from ancient Greek wisdom and expresses our commitment to balance, moderation and harmony through education. WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? Apart from overseeing everything at the school, I am also very much involved with other establishments in promoting our educational facilities in Cyprus to the world. Presently, my vision is for people from abroad to realise what excellent private educational facilities we have here in Cyprus. We need to promote our country, highlighting the quality of our education. People are pleasantly surprised to discover the high standard of our infrastructure and academic achievements. We are opening up new avenues of co-operation globally.
33
“WE ARE PLEASED TO SAY THAT WE REACH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE EVERY YEAR.” HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR PUPILS’ ACADEMIC SUCCESS? Our students frequently win prestigious awards from Cambridge Assessment International Education and Pearson, reflecting their academic excellence. Recently, we had a student who gained the highest grade in the world at IGCSE Mathematics. We are pleased to say that we reach academic excellence every year. Most of our graduates are offered a position to study in their chosen university and follow the academic path of their dreams. HOW ARE YOU SUPPORTED IN YOUR ROLE? I am proud to collaborate with an inspirational Board of Directors, an excellent Management Team as well as a staff of over 130. We have highly-qualified, committed teachers whom we recruit and select carefully according to our requirements. We are also supported by a dedicated administration team. We are forward-thinking and bring in new ideas to develop, creating a friendly, family atmosphere. HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? I love getting together with family and friends, enjoying their company, but I have limited time to do this. I also enjoy cooking, baking and gardening. When I have the chance, there is nothing I would rather do than to take a trip within Cyprus. You can find hidden treasures, go back to your roots and escape the fuss and buzz of big towns. I enjoy the villages of our island where we can experience authentic Cypriot food and absorb the genuine traditional wisdom of the local people. It is my dream to see a free Cyprus one day. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I aspire to see The International School continue to provide a rich and varied learning experience for our students, within a safe environment - one which nurtures a sense of being included. Our vision is to excel beyond the boundaries of excellence in levels of achievement, both academically and holistically. Our next major project is the development of our theatre which will become a hub of culture, not just for the school, but also for the whole of Paphos. It will have a capacity of 300 people; plans have already been drawn up and the permits applied for. I will also continue to travel abroad to promote the school to a larger audience. I have just returned from such a trip in the UK and my next one is to St. Petersburg.

ALL ABOUT WINE
Written by George Kassianos President of Cyprus Sommeliers Association
VASILIKON WINERY IN KATHIKAS, PAFOS REGION
‘IT IS HERE THAT SOME OF THE BEST CYPRIOT WINES ARE PRODUCED.’
The Kyriakides brothers are truly dedicated to their family’s vineyards in Kathikas and started a winery in the early 90’s. Kathikas is located on the Laona plateau at an altitude of 650m above sea level between Pafos and Polis. It is also now ‘home’ to the well-known and much loved ‘Vasilikon Winery’. Herakles, Yiannis and George have created a beautiful space where locals and tourists go to enjoy the panoramic views of the western coast. The endless vineyards surrounding Kathikas also make a captivating view and justifiably so; it is considered the capital of the Akamas Laona Protected Denomination of Origin. The brothers, who share the same vision, have lived most of their life in Kathikas and despite their wish to be part of this pioneering region, they also knew something had to be done to preserve their family vineyards.
“Grape growing has been in our family for many years and when we all finished our studies, we decided we wanted to create a winery.” said Yiannis. The Vasilikon Winery was born in a plain barn-like house and in 1993, they released their first vintage. Inside, there were rows of expensive oak barrels sitting near gleaming metal wine tanks, with cases upon cases of bottled wine. It is here where the Kyriakides brothers, led by Yiannis who assumed the winemaker’s role, that some of the best Cypriot wines are produced. These include the original wine labels of the white Vasilikon (Xynisteri) and Ayios Onoufrios, a popular red blend. The legendary Cabernet based Methy was first released in 1999. Year after year, the family efforts were focused on improving
their wines, highlighting the local characteristics of the region and showing its potential, especially in foreign and imported varieties. In 2010, their state-of-the-art winery was built a little further down from the old ‘barn house’, with stunning views of the sea and unspoiled countryside. It also houses a wine museum, covers about 4,000m2 and includes the winery, wine cellar and bottling room. Soon after, the first rosé of the Vasilikon Winery was born. A blend of Maratheftiko and Shiraz; they named it ‘Einalia’. In general, a more concentrated fruit is produced in Kathikas, which mainly derives from the high yielding vineyards of the area. The Kathikas fruits have a higher content of ingredients, they offer richer flavours, cool acidity and fine fragrance. The efforts of the oenologist of the winery, Aphrodite Constanti, is to maintain the fruit and, as much as possible, the local character and authenticity. All this shows in the glass: the higher acidity, the drier character of the wines, the distinctive aromas ... the minerality in the mouth. The focus at Vasilikon Winery at present lays mostly on the Cypriot varietals including Morokanella, Lefkada and Maratheftiko (Aion) which are used to promote the rich terroir of the area. New goals will be set soon at the winery because we all know that winemakers always dream of better wines. Vasilikon Winery is open from 8:30 am – 6 pm every day except Sunday. They also have a newly opened restaurant which serves coffee, breakfast and lunch (and wine of course).

THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF WINE… KYPEROUNDA BEST YOUNG SOMMELIER OF THE YEAR 2019 20 - 22 November, Kyperounda Winery For the last three years, Kyperounda Winery has organised the Best Young Sommelier Competition in cooperation with the Cyprus Sommeliers Association. It is open to participants aged 34 and under. It is an annual event which is considered very important for the development of professional sommeliers on the island. It involves written tests, blind tastings and the ability to identify certain spirits. On the day of the final, the three candidates will compete live together. George Kassianos, President of Cyprus Sommeliers Association says, “The competition is held under international rules and to the standards of any leading international sommelier competition. The judging committee will include oenologists and members of the Cyprus Sommeliers Association.” The last two competitions have been won by Sotiris Neophytides of the Parklane Hotel in Limassol. He says, from experience, “The winning trophy is just the first goal for young sommeliers. They should aim for the top by not just winning this national competition, but also the international competitions organised by the International Association of Sommeliers (ASI)”. Cyprus will have a new ‘Best Young Sommelier 2019’ very soon.
UNCOVERING NEW TASTES AT NELION WINERY When the international glass artist, Yorgos Papadopoulos, moved his art studio back home to Cyprus and returned to his family village of Kedares, he found his father’s old vineyard overgrown and neglected. They had not been tended to for over 15 years. He was advised by the local community to rip out the vines and plant more profitable plum trees, but instead, Yorgos and his friends proved them wrong. This year’s harvest was phenomenal! Yorgos has teamed up with oenologist, Marinos Ioannou of Nelion Winery (just two minutes down the road), to produce a single vineyard varietal wine. It is from the rare Cinsault grape variety and expectations are high for a Premier wine. Ioannou explained that, “Cinsault is one of the minor grapes found in Rhône blends and Provençal rosés. Because of its heat tolerance and productivity, it was widely planted in Diarizos Valley. We aim to produce a wine with fruity, floral aromas and a medium body. The target is an elegant wine reflecting Yorgos’ art”. Nelion is a family built and run boutique winery established in 1996, near Pretori Village, Pafos. At the winery, they produce small batches of artisanal wines, mainly from indigenous and Mediterranean grape varieties. The winery sells 80% of its production from the winery and the remaining 20% in selected wine shops and restaurants across Cyprus.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
PINALEON
Traditional Cypriot Cuisine with a Difference
We all have that favourite secret place that we love for Cypriot food. Pinaleon is certainly at the top of our list. The building is large and is a beautiful old carob mill. It may not have stunning views, as it is on the main road as you drive up from the Mall heading to Kennedy Square, but it offers excellent food.
flowers, spicy cheese dip, fried rocket with eggs and fresh onion, halloumi cheese, lamb chops with wild oregano and chicken from the grill. They were accompanied by homemade French fries sprinkled with wild oregano. They also serve one of the most delicious favas dips we have ever tasted. All were excellent and the word ‘feast’ springs to mind.
It has taken the new owners five years to locate this building which is perfect for their new restaurant. Andreas Constantinou and Yiannis Ioannou have been friends for many years and have worked in many successful establishments around Paphos. They decided to combine their catering experience together and open their dream venue – Pinaleon, which translates to mean, “Hungry Lion”.
Other dishes which were available included pickled quail’s eggs, boiled snails with olive oil and vinegar, char-grilled pigeon and fried artichokes with eggs.
The Carob Mill building is a large space set out with many green and white check tables in a traditional rustic Cypriot style. Inside, the decoration is all to do with food, with the walls sectioned into different food groups – olives, carobs, wheat and wine.
The wine list was very reasonably priced with Cypriot and Greek wines. Pinaleon produces Cypriot and Greek cuisine offering a truly authentic experience with fresh seasonal produce cooked to perfection. The opportunity to select exactly what you want instead of a whole meze certainly makes this place stand out.
This is a meze restaurant but a meze with a difference, in that you can select exactly what dishes you fancy from the menu. The menu is large but the priority of the kitchen is to provide seasonal produce, which means that sometimes items on the menu might not be available. The menu is divided into cold starters, hot starters, meze on the grill, meat on the grill and side orders. You then have the choice to select a portion for 2 or 4 persons depending on the size of your party. For our meal we selected the courgettes fried with egg, village salad, tzatziki, stuffed courgette

FROM THE CHEF’S TABLE
FROM THE CHEF’S TABLE MEET DAVID GOODRIDGE
Executive Group Chef for Thanos Hotels This month we visited David Goodridge, Executive Group Chef at Thanos Hotels, to find out his favourite and most recommended recipe. Goodridge moved to Cyprus in 2013 and joined the Thanos Group at the Anassa Hotel as Executive Chef.
During the summer months he works mainly out of the Anassa Hotel, but he also regularly travels to Paphos to the Annabelle Hotel and Almyra Hotel as part of his role as executive chef for the group. Whilst his role does include a lot of administration and management, Goodridge really enjoys being hands-on in the kitchen. He came to the Thanos Group after an illustrious gastronomic career in the UK, Japan, Hong Kong and now Cyprus. He started in the kitchen with the famous chef, Raymond Blanc, at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxford. Le Manoir has a global reputation for fine gastronomy and it is where Goodridge trained at the young age of 16. Whilst working there, he was sent to France to work in various other 3 Michelin star restaurants, as part of his training.

Eight years later, the hotel sent him to Japan, where he worked in two traditional classic restaurants to learn more about Japanese cuisine and culture. He stayed for over a year in Japan, working in two locations, Tokyo and Tokushima, to have a full understanding of their cooking. After this, he worked as Head Chef in the French fine dining restaurant at Gaddi’s, at the prestigious Peninsular Hotel in Hong Kong. He was later headhunted to join the Thanos Group and relocated to live in Latchi. Whilst he comes from a strong background in Asian food, he likes the variety and diversity of all the different restaurants within the Thanos Group. Here, Goodridge shares his recipe with Cyprus in Style Magazine for Melitzanosalata’, or in English, Smoked Aubergine Salad.

‘DELICIOUS FOOD & DRINK, BREATHTAKING SEA VIEWS & UNFORGETTABLE SUNSETS!’
PAPHOS
As the summer draws to a close, we all still have that hankering to be near the sea and there is no better Place to Be than Suite 48 in Paphos. Opened just over eight years ago, it is situated right on the coast, in an absolutely stunning location. Suite 48 offers the perfect spot to sit and relax. It really does have some of the best seaviews in Paphos, with plenty of shaded areas to sit and enjoy them. It is not the easiest place to find, but once you find it, it is worth it!
DELICIOUS BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER MENUS! With both inside and outside seating areas, Suite 48 is a well-known and widely recommended meeting place between locals and visitors staying in Paphos. They open daily at 9 am and close late at night with an extensive food menu available for all to enjoy. For breakfast, their most popular dish is “The Wall Street Classic” which is their ‘take’ on Eggs Benedict. At lunch and dinner, the menu covers everything from sandwiches to gourmet meals.
ORGANIC COFFEE! Suite 48 also holds an excellent reputation for their exceptional coffees! For the last three years, they have used a single origin coffee bean from Ethiopia, which is supplied by a micro roaster in Limassol. All their coffee is organic.
REFRESHING COCKTAILS & GREAT MUSIC TASTE! The hard-to-choose-from Cocktail Menu is a challenge, but once you have selected your favourite drink, the rest is easy. The music always enhances the experience of being there and they often host live music events such as Cuban Nights and Outdoor Cinema Evenings. The excellent, efficient and friendly staff hugely contribute to the overall experience of visiting there and work hard under the management of Zach Archontous. Suite 48 is a firm favourite of ours here at Cyprus in Style Magazine. Their new winter opening hours start this month, from 9 am – 1 am, so you can count on them to be open when you want them to be.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“TO DESIGN, YOU NEED KNOWLEDGE… WE MUST BE AWARE OF WHAT HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE.” MEET ANDREAS VARDAS Architect, Varda Studio
Andreas Vardas is one of Cyprus’ leading architects and has recently completed the major courthouse construction in central Paphos. He is a father of three and lives in Geroskipou in Paphos, with his wife Birute Vardas, who is also an architect.
“…DESIGNING IS MY PASSION AND I DO NOT SEE IT AS WORK.” HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT? I have enjoyed drawing in detail from a very young age and I have always been fascinated by buildings. It is an interest that has stayed with me throughout my life. There were no universities in Cyprus when I left school, so if you wanted to further your studies, you had to go abroad. I went to the University of Birmingham to start my degree in architecture.
54
October 2019
I then went onto University College London to study at the prestigious Bartlett School of Architecture. I was very lucky to study under some of the best architectural professors in the world. After graduation, I decided to stay in London and worked for different architectural practices. I am a member of RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and also ETEK (The

Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber). For me, designing is my passion and I do not see it as work. One of my greatest joys is having time to concentrate on a project. AS A YOUNG ARCHITECT, WHO WERE YOU INFLUENCED BY? For a long time, I have admired the work of the Swiss-French architect, Le Corbusier. As an architect though, he did so much more, including writing, designing and painting. His main aim was to provide better living conditions for the populations in overcrowded cities. My wife and I recently visited his chapel in Ronchamp. It is a Roman Catholic chapel built in 1955, a working religious building and goes by the name of ‘Notre Dame du Haut’. It is considered worldwide to be one of Le Corbusier’s finest works of architecture and one of the most important buildings of the twentieth century. I also like the work of the lesser known Italian architect, Carlo Scarpa. He was heavily influenced by the materials he used, which is something I relate to.
“I ALSO ADMIRE THE MUSIC OF LED ZEPPELIN WHOM I HAVE SEEN IN CONCERT. YOU CAN FIND LIFE MEANING IN THEIR SONGS.” 55
“IF YOU DESIGN HOW PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE, THE FORM WILL COME.” WHY DID YOU RETURN TO CYPRUS? My sister asked me to design a house for her. When it was finished, I believe that people saw it as being from another planet, due to the ultra-modern design. However, today it has been accepted. I felt that I had spent long enough in London and decided to return to Paphos where I established my practice in 1997 under the name of Varda Studio. Since then, I have worked on many commissions, both in the public and private sectors. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY AT VARDA STUDIO? The studio’s design agenda is focused on two points: a clear architectural response to the site we are working on and listening to the client’s requirements. The entire design and building process is as much about providing an exciting and pleasing spatial experience, as it is about delivering quality functional spaces and accommodation.
“In every profession, if you are good at what you do, you need to understand the essence of what your client requires.” HOW DID YOU ENJOY DESIGNING YOUR HOME? To us, the soul of the building is very important. Every building has a soul. Designing our own home gave us a certain freedom, which led us to use concrete tube pipes and metal sheets to create a totally unique design. In the construction, we used 360 concrete pipes. We really like using concrete and other raw materials as they are primal. It gave us the opportunity to experiment and the finished building is clean, minimal and technologically advanced. Our home is for our family but it also houses our art collection in our AB gallery. EXPLAIN THE DESIGN OF THE COURTHOUSE IN PAPHOS? It is the first correctly designed courthouse in Cyprus. It is designed to ensure that the judges never come into contact with other people on entering and leaving the building. The building was finished in 2018 and is over 4,100 square metres in size. The design aims to create a continuation of the steel elevation between the two buildings, an abstract form, which maintains the general scale of the street and the area. The building extends lengthwise to the plot and uses atriums to allow natural light to enter the structure. The external

“YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE IDEAS HAPPEN.”
wall shades the initial space from the sun and consists of openings which form interesting light patterns and a feeling of openness. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CYPRIOT ARCHITECTURE? On the whole it is good. The positive news is that while we have been enjoying an economic boom, this has led to more opportunities to build. My work is mainly in Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos but we have worked on a number of projects overseas in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON HOW LIMASSOL IS DEVELOPING ARCHITECTURALLY AS A CITY? I know that a lot of people are complaining about the skyscrapers in Limassol, but to be honest, I don’t actually think that they are high enough. If you are going to make the decision to develop as a truly international city, you either have to go for it or not. You are either in or out. Limassol is a vibrant city and the lights on top of the towers all add to the character. WHO ARE YOUR HEROES? I am a big fan of Diego Maradona, the Argentine footballer. He has a real passion for football. He states that, “When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success”. As a young man, it was my dream to be a professional footballer.
IS THERE AN ETHOS BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS? I firmly believe that if you design how people want to live, the form will come. The difference between art and architecture is quite simple. Art is simply the object and the viewer. In architecture, we have the object, the viewer and the user. Painting and designing are two very different languages. You have to make the effort to study and learn. You don’t just go to bed and have ideas. You have to make the ideas happen. My wife, who is also an architect, and I, enjoy nothing more than travelling abroad to important architectural works and absorbing them. It gives us inspiration. As mentioned before, a building must have a soul and get away from the aesthetics. It is not all about ideas though, it is also about knowledge. To design, you need knowledge. Before we design, we must be aware of what has been done before. If you don’t have an opinion, you should take the effort to study and learn. In every profession – if you want to be good at it – you need to understand the true essence of what your client needs. Also, you should always take into consideration the constraints of a client’s budget.
Maradona is a winner. He is a genius in his time and can be compared to Mozart. They only come along every couple of hundred years. I also admire the music of Led Zeppelin whom I have seen in concert. You can find life meaning in their songs. Last year, my wife and I went to Amsterdam to see a concert by Wim Mertens playing the soundtracks from the production, ‘Belly of an Architect’. The film drama was originally written and directed by Peter Greenaway, about an architect who is commissioned to construct an exhibition in Rome, dedicated to the French architect, Étienne-Louis Boullée. The music was by the avant-garde composers, Glenn Branca and Wim Mertens.
57
“CURRENTLY, WE ARE WORKING ON A NUMBER OF PROJECTS IN THE PRIVATE AND COMMERCIAL SECTORS IN CYPRUS AND OVERSEAS.”
I am unusual, these days, as an architect, because I still use models in our studio for the initial design of any project. Yes, of course we use the latest technology as well, but this is the way I like to bring my buildings to life. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BUILDING? Not one specific building. There has been a vast amount of evolution in architecture. Of course, some are stronger than others and different buildings have different strengths. We need to keep doing new things and experimenting. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST HONOUR? I was humbled, earlier this year, to be invited to a conference in Romania where I was invited to speak with four other leading architects from across the world. I was also invited to be a member of the grand judging jury for The Romanian Building Awards.
58
October 2019
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? Currently, we are working on a number of projects in the private and commercial sectors in Cyprus and overseas. We are also very pleased to be working on the new theatre for The International School of Paphos. I have just finished designing the boarding house at the school and the theatre is an extension to their facilities. The design needs to expand in order to not just encompass the role of the theatre in the school’s life, but also in the wider community. For the future of the world we live in, it is important to me that we always design and incorporate eco-friendly features into our designs. On 26th November, I have been invited to lecture at an architectural symposium organised by ‘Share-Architects’ in Benaki Museum in Athens.

48 HOURS IN SINGAPORE Travelling from Cyprus just gets better.
You can fly from Larnaca to Singapore daily via Doha or Dubai. Excellent connections are in place for a short, easy escape and it is also a great destination for a pre or post cruise stay option. Singapore also provides for an ideal stopover en-route to Australia. Our flight to Singapore from Larnaca, Cyprus was a breeze. We settled into our hotel in China Town, The Scarlet. It is a colonial-style property, transformed into a boutique hotel just steps from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple - a must see. We ventured into the rather warm evening air to see what China Town had to offer and were very impressed. The following day it was the full tourist get up! We started the day navigating the MRT (Mass Rapid Transport), Singapore’s Metro System and once again were blown away with the organisation and cleanliness of it all. We visited Suntec City and took a Duck Tour of Singapore. This started as a bus tour and then headed to the waters of Marina Bay where we ploughed into the river to become an amphibious vehicle with a splash. The tour allowed us to get close to the Singapore Flyer (Asia’s answer to the London Eye), the Science Museum shaped like a lotus flower, the Merlion Sculpture (half lion half mermaid) at Fullerton Bay with a view of the most significant piece of superb architecture you will ever come across – The Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The following day, after a visit to the new and very modern Marina Harbour Cruise Centre, we drove through the main Business District and had lunch in the National Gallery at the National Kitchen by Violet Oon. Wow, what a treat! The motto of this 5* dining experience is, ‘We pride ourselves on showcasing Singapore’s culinary treasures and heritage from Chinese, Indian and Malay cuisines. Our dishes represent Singapore’s history as the crossroads of the world through the varied ingredients and flavours employed’. It tasted just as good as it sounds.
“We enjoyed a few more Singapore Slings with views stretching out as far as Indonesia.”
A quick change for the evening as we then visited Sentosa Island, a resort off Singapore’s southern coast, connected to the city by road, cable car, pedestrian boardwalk and monorail. We enjoyed a few more Singapore Slings with views stretching out as far as Indonesia. Following that, it was a 30-minute ride on the cable car! We had an absolutely stunning evening and were very sad to leave Singapore. Visiting Singapore for 48 hours was a wonderful experience before the next leg of our journey… Written by Helen Granville for Century Travel. ‘ONE OF THE MANY GIFTS FROM MOTHER NATURE.’ Essential Oils – the natural way forward.
Cultivating plants for their oils and using them for medicinal purposes is nothing new. Many believe that the use of essential oils to promote natural health originated in China or in India during the implementation of the Ayurvedic medical system, but in actual fact, Ancient Egypt was the true birthplace of essential oils. Distillation pots were found dating back to 3,500 BC and it is also believed that oils were produced using a solvent extraction method known as ‘enfleurage’ – an ancient technique of extracting aromatic oils from flowers using animal fat to dissolve the oils and thereby absorb their aromas. We spoke to Helena Georgiou of ‘Natural Health & Healing’ to find out more about Aromatherapy and how it can impact the way we live. Helena is originally from Durban in South Africa but has lived in Paphos for over 17 years. She is a qualified holistic therapist and holds qualifications in Usui Reiki Healing, Indian Head Massage and Metatronic Sacred Geometry Healing. Helena also specialises in Aromatherapy and deals in DoTerra Essential Oils. In this edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, we discuss 6 common health issues and how to treat each one using the right essential oils.
HEADACHES & MIGRAINES Recommended Oils: Lavender and Roman Chamomile Lavender oil is well known for having a calming effect on the nervous system and reducing stress. It has been used throughout history to aid restless sleep patterns and helps our body to maintain healthy tissues. Roman Chamomile reduces anxiety and tension. Used together, these oils are a great aid for instantly relaxing tight muscles and therefore releasing the tension which results in a headache or a migraine. How to use the oils for best results: • Combine the oils with a carrier oil (sweet almond or organic coconut oil) and place a drop or two in each palm. • Rub each temple gently, as well as the back of the neck, especially where it meets the head. • It can also be applied under the feet or under the nose for immediate relaxation.
• Why do our doctors prescribe chemical medications before advising us to try ‘natural healing’ methods? • Why is ‘natural healing’ not a subject taught in our school curricula? to ease a rapid heartbeat and any tension in the arteries. YlangYlang oil balances the heart rate and reduces the high blood pressure, while Marjoram is used to support the heart muscle. Frankincense has anti-inflammatory properties which work well with the anti-coagulant properties of Helichrysum oil and Cassia is used as a cardiotonic and detoxifier. How to use the oils for best results: • Combine the oils in a 10ml roller bottle and add organic coconut oil. • Apply the blend to the bottom of your feet, wrists and along the breastbone. • Massage the blend over the heart and the back of the neck as needed, at least twice a day.
REGULATE SLEEP PATTERNS Recommended Oils: Lavender, Hawaiian Sandalwood, Marjoram and Geranium
Recommended Oils: Helichrysum, YlangYlang, Frankincense, Cassia & Marjoram
This combination of sweet oils produces a relaxing, warm and calming effect on the mind and body. When used together on a daily basis, the blend creates a tranquil feeling which allows you to relax and thus improves your sleep pattern. Geranium oil is also known for aiding Insomnia.

• Combine 1 drop of each with 50 ml of a carrier oil – sweet almond or organic coconut oil • Apply under the feet, under the nose, or on your pillowcase so you breathe in the aromas while sleeping.
BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM Recommended Oils: Oregano, Frankincense, Lemon, Rosemary & Cinnamon This healthy blend acts as an alternative antibiotic treatment and assists in supporting a healthy immune system. Used internally, these oils protect against seasonal threats by increasing the body’s natural antioxidant defenses and help to deter any associated germs and allergies. Cinnamon is a fantastic booster for a healthier immune system. How to use the oils for best results: • Blend a few drops of each oil in a pan of steaming water. • Inhale the steam while placing a towel over your head for a greater potency. • For ongoing immune support, rub Frankincense on your neck daily.
INCREASE ENERGY LEVELS Recommended Oils: Wild Orange, Basil, Lime, Lemon & Peppermint Wild Orange and Basil are both known for their regenerative qualities, while Lime positively affects your mood with its stimulating and invigorating properties. This combination of oils is known to improve circulation, blood flow and increase oxygen levels in the body. They encourage productivity and creativity by diminishing frustration and doubts that can interfere with your personal progress.
How to use the oils for best results: • Blend 2 drops of each oil together and rub directly under the nose, on the chest, on the forehead, back or neck. • Inhaling the aromas through cupped hands helps to create an instant effect. • The blend can also be consumed internally in water or any other liquid for an instant effect.
AID DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Recommended Oils: Ginger, Fennel, Peppermint & Anise Combine these oils and improve your digestive system by creating a balanced gut and simultaneously increasing your immune system. The supportive, soothing and settling properties of this blend, when applied to the stomach, aids discomfort. Fennel aids and calms the digestive system. How to use the oils for best results: • Apply 2 drops topically to the abdomen or dilute with organic coconut oil and massage onto the stomach daily. • Great benefits are experienced when rubbed on the stomach after a heavy meal. “Essential oils are to me another one of the many amazing gifts from Mother Nature. All we need is found in Nature.” Helena said. She also warned about the possible side effects of applying essential oils incorrectly and stressed the importance of receiving expert guidance according to your specific needs. If you are experiencing any of the above health issues, please seek medical guidance to ensure you are at no immediate risk of something more serious.

ARE FACE MASKS A PART OF YOUR SKINCARE REGIME? NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR BETTER SKIN. Xenia Tyrimou grew up in the UK with Cypriot parents but has lived in Limassol for the last 9 years. Her own journey with beauty started over 10 years ago when she developed Psoriasis, an immune-mediated disease that causes patchy or flaky skin. Tyrimou didn’t want to use the conventional method of medication and medicated creams and so began her search for a more natural, alternative solution. Her mother recommended that she try Propolis Skincare Gel, which, with its many benefits, helped calm her skin down. Tyrimou then went on to to use other products in the range and became an expert at mixing cocktails to match her skin. She was so impressed with the whole SBC range that she decided to become a wholesaler for Cyprus. Today, she is the Managing Director of XT Essentials Ltd. She is the official distributor for the professional British brand called SBC and works directly with her team, consisting of over 50 beauty therapists across the island. Her products are also available directly to the public. Tyrimou tells us why we should all use a face mask; something many of us forget to do!
“Absolutely everyone should use a face mask. They are easy to apply, fun to use and most importantly, they are great at delivering direct, fast results to the skin” says Xenia.
SBC OFFER THREE FACE MASKS: They are available in 100ml at €21 each. • Cucumber Hydrating Face Mask • Collagen Radiance Mask • Witch Hazel & Zinc Purifying Mask

GLOWING SKIN – The process of allowing a clay mask to dry on your skin, along with the removal of the mask, will stimulate circulation which improves skin tone and gives a more radiant glow. The Cucumber Radiance Mask (whilst without clay) encompasses a cooling and hydrating formula which quenches the skin’s thirst by helping it to retain moisture for a smoother complexion. Ideal for a dewy, healthier glow. 5. RELAX AND ENJOY ‘ME TIME’ - Not only do face masks offer an incredible amount of skincare benefits, they can also help with your mental well being. Take time out of your hectic day. Relax and apply a face mask combined with a relaxing bath. To order, see their website www.xtessentials.com

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“BRINGING LIKE-MINDED INDIVIDUALS TOGETHER TO ENJOY FINE FOOD AND WINE” MEET CHRISTOPHE CHAILLOU
President of Cyprus Wine & Business Club
Christophe Chaillou is a French businessman who has lived in Limassol since 1985. He is the father of four sons and lives in the city with his wife. He is the owner and director of Wine and More at French Depot, the CEO of Creative Tours and President of the Cyprus Wine and Business Club. He is also the Foreign Trade Counsellor for France, the former President of Cyprus MICE Agencies Association and the Vice President of Cyprus Finance Business Association. TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE IN FRANCE. I was born in Libourne, near Saint-Émilion. Wine is very much appreciated in my family and I was aged thirteen when I started drinking and enjoying it. Wine is very much a part of life in France. As a child, I used to remove and collect wine bottle labels; this must have been a sign of my later career. I grew up in Bordeaux before leaving to study at hotel school in Glion in Switzerland. There, I studied for my masters in hotel management. After graduation, I completed my army service, but because of my hospitality background, the General at the garrison made me his maître d’hôtel. This further increased my knowledge of fine wines as I became responsible for their selection and serving at the table to guests. Once, I had the honour of serving wine to the former President of France, François Mitterrand. After my national service I was ready to start my career in hospitality and worked with the exclusive hotel group, Relais and Châteaux. I was the assistant manager at Château

Saint-Martin in Vence. It was a boutique hotel with twenty suites. I became good friends with the sommelier at the hotel and he taught me a lot about wine. I actually think he was the best sommelier in France during that time, so I was lucky to work with him. He was an unbelievable wine educator. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CYPRUS? My first wife was from Cyprus and we met whilst we were studying in Switzerland. We came to Cyprus in 1985 to get married in Limassol. Then, I thought my destiny was to be a hotelier, but my career took a different course. Many guests had flown in from France for my wedding and we were responsible for showing them around the island. This led us to establish our company, Creative Tours, which is a travel agency that focuses on bringing tourists to Cyprus. Back then, there were no direct flights and very few French people visiting the island. Today, we probably deal with 85% of the French tourists who visit Cyprus. Over the years, I would say that we have brought approximately over a million French citizens to Cyprus.
“OVER THE YEARS, I WOULD SAY THAT WE HAVE BROUGHT APPROXIMATELY OVER A MILLION FRENCH CITIZENS TO CYPRUS.” Creative Tours also offer trips for wine lovers to visit France and learn about wine. This month, we have a trip going to France to visit vineyards in Alsace, Champagne, Burgundy, Chablis and Sancerre. We run these trips on a regular basis for enthusiasts and wine professionals. We also arrange trips all over the world for our clients. WHEN DID YOUR CAREER GO IN THE DIRECTION OF WINE? In 2009, I was presented with the opportunity to purchase the original single French Depot boutique in Limassol. The concept of French Depot back then, was to sell French wines by the case. We have since expanded with boutiques in both Paphos and Nicosia. At our shop in Paphos, we also have a wine bar and purposely designed tasting room. We are focused more on selling fine wines by the bottle. Our market is 40% direct sales to the public and 60% to the trade, including leading restaurants and hotels across the island. This year, we celebrate our tenth anniversary and we are going in a new direction under the name of Wine and More at French Depot. This is so we are able to upgrade the brand and include other products and wines from around the world. We are very keen to promote artisan, traditional food products and import the best cheeses to Cyprus. We buy them from Rungis, the largest market in France and they are flown to Cyprus within 24 hours. We have over 40 French cheeses, including a truffle cheese and an outstanding camembert. Our delicacies also include biscuits from La Mère Poulard and chocolates from the world-famous chocolatier, Marquise de Sévigné. The top luxury products that France has to offer will always be found at Wine and More. We also carry an exclusive selection of Cognacs, Armagnacs and Pineau des Charentes. In every boutique, we have a Whisky and Gin corner. All of our boutiques have knowledgeable, trained staff. We also have trained sommeliers who are there to advise our customers on their wine purchases. Personally, I have returned to France 12 times over the last 10 years on wine research and buying trips. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CYPRIOT WINE? It is very good and getting better by the year. This year, we decided to make the big move and exclusively distribute the

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“THIS YEAR, WE DECIDED TO MAKE THE BIG MOVE AND DISTRIBUTE THE WINES OF EKFRASEIS VASSILIADES WINERY. WE CONSIDER THEM TO BE AMONGST THE BEST WINEMAKERS IN CYPRUS…” wines of Ekfraseis Vassiliades Winery. We consider them to be amongst the best winemakers in Cyprus and we like what they are doing. Their vineyard is positioned at the highest altitude in Cyprus and they have a great selection of wines. They are the only ones doing a Pinot Noir in Cyprus. Ekfraseis wines were served to President Macron during his recent visit to Cyprus. Over the 35 years that I have lived here in Cyprus, I have seen a dramatic improvement in winemaking in all the wineries. HOW DID YOU START THE WINE AND BUSINESS CLUB IN CYPRUS? Over 10 years ago, whilst reading a magazine on a flight, I first read about the Wine and Business Club in France. I kept the article, as I really thought it was a good way to bring together, people who share a real passion for wine and excellent food. Last year, after speaking with the association in France, I secured the first overseas franchise for Cyprus. The founder of the club, Alain Marty, visited Cyprus before we started and I was delighted to show him around the island. We have already had 5 events and our dinners always take place on the last Thursday of every month. Our next event in October is on the 31st and will be a Drappier Champagne Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol. It is a way to bring like-minded individuals together to enjoy a good meal and taste different fine wines. The tasting is usually discussed in the presence of the winemakers.
“WE HAVE OVER 40 FRENCH CHEESES, INCLUDING A TRUFFLE CHEESE AND AN OUTSTANDING CAMEMBERT.” 72
October 2019
“WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE CASINO AND BIG HOTELS, LIMASSOL’S FUTURE AS A COSMOPOLITAN CITY IS SECURED.” In November, we have an Italian event which is based around Italian wines and will be attended by one of the most influential business women from Italy. More details are coming soon for this event. WHO ARE YOUR WINE HEROES? Most certainly, I consider Alain Brumont to be one of them. He is based in the Madiran Region, which is very well known for producing fine wines. Originally, this area was not destined for great wines but over the last 20 years, he has transformed the land. He produces a variety of seven authentic wines. His wine was recently served at the G7 Summit. He has been voted the Best French Winemaker and is also considered to be the producer of one of the top ten finest wines in the world.
“THIS MONTH, WE HAVE A TRIP GOING TO FRANCE TO VISIT VINEYARDS IN ALSACE, CHAMPAGNE, BURGUNDY, CHABLIS AND SANCERRE. WE RUN THESE TRIPS ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR ENTHUSIASTS AND WINE PROFESSIONALS.” 73
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Another personality I respect in the wine industry is François Janoueix from Saint Émilion. He owns 11 châteaux and has become a very good friend. He is a great personality and makes great wine. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE WINES IN THE WORLD? I am very fond of wine from the vintage of 2000. I really enjoy most wines from Saint Émilion or Pomerol. A special favourite would be a bottle of red wine from Château Montus ‘La Tyre’. They have a 2000 Montus Cuvée ‘La Tyre’. With regards to white wine, I always enjoy a Sancerre from Domaine Vacheron or a Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos from Christian Moreau. The winemaking tradition of the Moreau family goes back to the early 19th century. It has been voted the best white wine in the world and we are very happy to sell it exclusively at Wine and More by French Depot. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF YOUR HOME TOWN OF LIMASSOL? In my opinion, it certainly is becoming the “the place to be” on the Mediterranean. It is already a very fashionable place with many nationalities living here. With the completion of the casino and big hotels, Limassol’s future as a cosmopolitan city is secured.

HIGH ACHIEVERS DINA NOVIKOVA
The International School of Paphos Congratulations to Dina Novikova who represented The International School of Paphos and Cyprus in the “Owlypia” Intellectual’s Challenge in Cambridge on 17-20 June, 2019. Dina was afforded an opportunity to participate in a truly multicultural intellectual event which was held on the premises of the University of Cambridge and thus had a chance to meet students from all over the world. The “Owlypia” competition itself consists of a number of challenges – either for teams or for individuals, out of which the most important is the Debating Competition where the judges are called upon to choose only six participants out of all the participating students. Dina’s age group had approximately 100 students who were evaluated within all three days of the event. During the competition, the participants are given a topic upon which they have to present a speech, being assigned either the affirmative or negative side of the argument. Dina, representing Cyprus, was justifiably chosen as one of the six finalists and managed with her excellent performance to win the “Top Debater” Title which came along with the beautiful prize of an Owl, being the symbol of the “Owlypia.” Well done Dina!
PANARETI NEOPHYTOU

“...GATHERED FRAGMENTS OF MYTHOLOGY, FOLKLORE AND MEMORIES IN CYPRUS.” MEET MARGARET PARASKOS
Artist and Director of the Cyprus College of Art in Lemba
Margaret Paraskos was born in Leeds and grew up in Canterbury. She spent many of her summer holidays in Paphos with her family and later went on to study Fine Art at the University of Brighton. After graduation, Paraskos completed her Master’s Degree at the University of Northampton. Today, she is an Artist and Director of the Cyprus College of Art in Lemba, which she runs with her son, Emilio Koutsoftides.
Her father was the late Stass Paraskos, who is, without question, one of Cyprus’ leading artists and the founder of the Cyprus College of Art in Lemba. His brightly coloured figurative paintings are in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London. Paraskos grew up spending much of her time at the Cyprus College of Art and the influence of her father can clearly be seen in her work. She works on canvas with oil paint and is inspired by “gathered fragments of mythology, folklore and memories of Cyprus”. These visual sequences, together with archaeological artefacts, are seemingly random and chaotic, but “in my paintings become ordered and whole, creating a new myth”, she said. She goes on to explain that, “memories, history, folklore and myth are an endless source of subject matter for my work”. Her art clearly shows an admiration for Henri Matisse through his use of strong colours and compositions.
84
October 2019
Her own paintings are bright and bold with free flowing gestures, partly inspired by her surroundings at the Cyprus College of Art. Paraskos says, “through rich colours, abstract shapes and personal symbols”, she is seeking to express strong emotions through her art. Her works have been regularly exhibited in Cyprus and overseas and are included in the collections at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery at Leeds University, the Zambellas Museum in Nicosia and the Larnaca Town Hall Collection. Her last exhibition, entitled ‘Nostos’, was held at Palia Ilektriki Cultural Centre in Paphos as part of the 2017 City of Culture celebrations. In 2020, she is planning a solo exhibition at the Blue Iris Art Gallery in Paphos. The Cyprus College of Art will also be rebuilt and renovated throughout 2020 but will still be open to international students from universities in the UK, as alternative accommodation has been utilised so that the college can continue to operate. When the building work is complete, this will signal a new start for the college as the workshops will be open to the public. As Paraskos states,
“We will also have a new exhibition space. The first exhibition will be to celebrate the work of my father, Stass, and all his achievements through bringing artists and art students to work in Cyprus. My great sadness is that he will not be here to see the college being rebuilt and to see how much he has achieved. His spirit though, is still very much in Lemba.” 85

‘ART FOR CHARITY’
Now is the time to buy Art with real meaning...
KAPOPOULOS ‘AUCTION BEAT’ 1 Auction. 60 Paintings. No Starting Price. ART AUCTION, KAPOPOULOS FINE ART, THE LANDMARK HOTEL, NICOSIA 23rd OCTOBER AT 7.30pm The Space Art for Charity was launched in December 2016, with the purpose of promoting artists and raising money for charities in Cyprus. The first exhibition took place at the Annabelle Hotel in Paphos. All twenty-six contributing artists received 50% of the sale of the paintings and the other 50% was split equally between the three selected charities. €4,500 was raised for Pasykaf, Cancer Patient Support Group (CPSG) and St. Michaels’ Hospice. In June 2017, The Space Art for Charity initiative brought over sixty photographers together across Cyprus, to hold a photographic exhibition, for which the theme was, ‘My Cyprus – A Personal View’. The very generous photographers all donated photographs which were sold with 100% of the proceeds going to Pasykaf and CPSG. The exhibition took place at three venues in Paphos and a further €5,500 was raised for the two charities.
Over 100 generous artists from across Cyprus donated artworks, while businesses donated venues, wine and printed materials for the marketing of the exhibition. Nearly €20,000 was raised during this event with 100% going direct to Pasykaf. Pasykaf provides services which support cancer patients going through their treatment. They have a range of services including the bus, which takes patients to The Oncology Centre in Nicosia, homecare nurses, psychological and physiological support, and are there to support patients going through difficult times. The next event for The Space Art for Charity is an auction of 20 of the paintings which were donated last year. The paintings have been specifically selected by the art auction house Kapopoulos and the auction will take place at The Landmark Hotel (formerly Hilton) in Nicosia on the 23rd October. The twenty paintings for Pasykaf will be part of an auction of sixty paintings, which will be sold with no starting price. The auction is organised by Kapopoulos Fine Arts who are
A 2018 calendar was produced from the photographs of the 2017 photographic exhibition and coupled together with a luxury Christmas Raffle, raised a further €3,000 for CPSG. Last year, The Space Art for Charity launched a National Art Exhibition that lasted four weeks and travelled from Paphos to Nicosia via Limassol. The exhibition was opened by Mayor Phedon Phedonos at the Almyra Hotel in Paphos, before moving to the Aphrodite Amathusia Cultural Centre in Limassol and finally ending at the 1010 Hall in Nicosia.

They have worked tirelessly with great dedication and passion for the good of our fellow human beings with cancer experience.
