The largest group of Peloponnese winemakers ever to visit Cyprus will hold a wine festival at the Ceronia Hall at the Carob Mill Restaurant in Limassol, from 12 pm to 8 pm, on Monday 3rd February.

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra meets the acclaimed Greek singer, Alkisti Protopsalti, in an artistic production which will take place on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th of February at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.

A Great Wine Marathon

Alkisti returns to the symphonic platform five years after her wonderful collaboration with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra. With her simply amazing performance back then still resounding in our ears, she now comes back to mesmerise us with a new collaboration, this time with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Together they will interpret all the greatest hits of her remarkable contribution to Greek music.

The event will showcase their beautifully crafted, top quality wines and is open to professionals and consumers. In total, there will be 26 winemakers who will be promoting the diversity of styles and varietals. There will be over 200 wines on offer which will be available on a tasting walk titled ‘A Great Wine Marathon’. The Icon Varieties of Peloponnese: their styles and perspectives A masterclass will take place by Yiannis Karakasis at 3 pm but is by invitation only. His class titled ‘The Icon Varieties of Peloponnese: their styles and perspectives’ will try to unlock the typicity and the different forms of the most celebrated wines from this region, which is expressed through their most exceptional terroirs. The tribute of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra to the unparalleled genius of Beethoven continues with his Symphony no. 8, a light-hearted masterpiece containing passages that could even be perceived as musical jokes. This comical angle – Irony and Joy! – is the connection between Beethoven’s symphony and the other two works of this programme. While Rossini’s ‘La Scala di Seta’, an operatic farsa comica, is genuinely comical, Richard Strauss’ ‘Burleske’ flirts with the idea of a witty parody of the “serious” concerto genre. Programme: G. Rossini: La Scala di Seta: Overture R. Strauss: Burleske for Piano and Orchestra in D minor L. v. Beethoven: Symphony no. 8 in F major, op. 93 Tickets: €12, €7 (18-26 yrs, pensioners), €5 (under 18)

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

FOUNDING PASYKAF MEET ANNA ACHILLEOUDI FOUNDER, PASYKAF

Anna Achilleoudi is the Founder and President of Pasykaf - The Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends. An accomplished paediatric anaesthesiologist, she has worked in both Cyprus and the UK. She lives in Nicosia with her husband, is a mother of two and a grandmother of five.

12

February 2020

Sometimes as a writer, you are lucky enough to meet a subject who really inspires you. Meeting and interviewing Mrs Anna Achilleoudi is that very experience for myself. We have met twice before. Once at a Pasykaf charity fundraiser, and the second time at the Oncology Centre in Nicosia, where we were both supporting a young patient recovering from a brain tumour. What I had never realised on these two meetings, is that this was the woman who started one of Cyprus’ leading cancer charities. Humble is a word we should associate with “Mrs Anna”, the name which she is affectionately known as by the Pasykaf staff. Anna Achilleoudi is a force to be reckoned with, and when I learn what she has achieved with the foundation of such a charity, she is even more impressive. While she is small in stature with auburn coloured hair, I just know that over the years many figures, both public and private, must have under-estimated the power of this woman. Anna is originally from Greece, but came to Cyprus in 1965 after she met her husband Christodoulos, while they were both studying at the University of Athens. Anna completed her medical studies to become a doctor and went on to specialise in Anaesthesiology. She later decided to specialise further and become a Paediatric Anaesthesiologist. She trained in the UK, working at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Paediatric Centre in Liverpool. As she says, “my main aim was to introduce new scientific changes to Cyprus”. She certainly did this over the years and was the doctor who introduced the first epidural to Cyprus. Anna worked for a long time at both the Nicosia General Hospital and the Makarios Hospital.

Sadly, in 1984, she experienced cancer firsthand, through her own diagnosis of breast cancer. It was at this time that she realised there was a significant stigma attached to the disease in Cyprus and also a lack of support. It was the reality of this that spurred her on to create the Association which today is well known as Pasykaf, but is officially called The Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends. In the beginning, it was just Anna, but today the organisation is supported by thousands. Anna told us, “The main mission of the Association is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families and to promote public awareness regarding the prevention and early detection of cancer. It is also imperative to me that this help is available for free and to all nationalities who need our service”. Right at the beginning, she aimed to start a “cancer centre with nice personnel and facilities”, but this has massively expanded over the years to include support centres all over the Island. Today, it is a voluntary, non-governmental

health association which is there to support cancer patients going through treatment and, if needed, to provide palliative care. They do this by providing home nursing, psychological support, physiotherapy, lymphoedema clinics, daycare centres, practical assistance with matters of social welfare, enlightenment for prevention of cancer and smoking cessation programmes. One of the most widely known services that they offer is the patient transport bus which runs daily between Paphos and Limassol and on to the Nicosia Oncology Centre. This is a lifeline for patients attending the centre for chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as very often they are not in any fit state to drive. The bus runs every day of the week that the centre is open for treatment.

As Anna told us, she had an exceptional understanding of what services needed to be offered through Pasykaf, as she had spent over two years visiting similar organisations in the UK, America and Canada prior to starting in Cyprus. She had seen the latest treatments with the associated equipment and wanted this to be available to all in Cyprus. Anna says, “Good health is for everybody, and nobody should be disadvantaged”. Back in the 1980s, there was still a great prejudice against people with cancer, as the reality was that people just did not understand it. There were stories of cancer patients in the villages being forced into living in a shed in the garden, for fear that their families might catch ‘the cancer’. The other aspect that struck Anna was that nobody was willing to talk about it and say they had cancer, so they were forced into isolation. Anna saw that we needed to create a new environment where patients could go out and say, “I had cancer, I had the treatment, and now I am better”. As she remembers, it was the people who had the experience of cancer who wanted the Association and initially, she started with just twenty patients and relatives who discussed what their main aim would be. “It was obvious to all that we needed to create a support group that patients and relatives could turn to, and it was also apparent that we needed to get the message out there about prevention”, she added. And so Pasykaf was formed, with its first meeting taking place in Anna’s house in Nicosia in 1986. They went on to open the first office in Nicosia and has since expanded to centres all over Cyprus. Today they have multi-disciplinary teams, including twenty-three nurses and a total staff of eighty-one across the island - all working very hard to support cancer patients and their families. Slowly but surely, the services expand as money allows. On the day that I met Anna, she was very excited to tell me about how their 24-Hour Nursing Care was now going to be available in all cities as they can now include Paphos, Larnaca and Paralimni. It has been available in Nicosia and Limassol for several years. She said, “I am so pleased about this. It is so much better for the patients and their families. More and more people want to stay in their home until the end with their families and familiar surroundings. Now with our 24-hour palliative care nursing they are able to do this”. Anna reflects on the early days when they had their one and only nurse, Jane, in Nicosia. Since then, they have recruited many nurses, but always at the heart of their support programme, is to provide patients with nurses who are fully trained in all aspects of their work. Nurses who work with patients in palliative care always need to learn, and Pasykaf has been instrumental in holding conferences to expand the knowledge of medical professionals in Cyprus. They held the first breast cancer conference in Cyprus with colleagues from Germany, and they held another conference in Limassol in palliative care. This was to educate all, not just Pasykaf staff.

“IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ALL THAT WE NEEDED TO CREATE A SUPPORT GROUP THAT PATIENTS AND RELATIVES COULD TURN TO, AND IT WAS ALSO APPARENT THAT WE NEEDED TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE ABOUT PREVENTION.”

Another great passion of Anna’s is to educate the people of Cyprus about the prevention of cancer. February is Cervical Cancer Month, and Pasykaf will run an educational campaign to advise women to get their smear tests done. In March there is a conference on colon cancer and in May a melanoma

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

conference in Limassol. As Anna explained, “we are using our connections in Europe and with other associations to get funding which allows us to expand our work”. A major future project for Pasykaf is the creation of a new centre in Nicosia. The land has been donated to the charity, and they are going to put the tender out for a purposebuilt design in the coming months. The idea is to create a centre where they can offer additional services and have more space to make their patients more comfortable. “We aim to expand our support services through group therapy and relative’s therapy. Also, to increase our palliative care through medical equipment available through the doctors, which will help patients. We are very excited about the new project and hope to start building within one year”. For nearly thirty-five years, Anna has devoted herself to the organisation and their patients. I asked her if the day-today sadness of cancer ever got her down and she replied, “In general, life for everybody will finish. I try to think that we must enjoy life. It is important for family members to be relaxed and happy so they can support patients. It is important to be fulfilled and enjoy every day as if it were your last. I wish good health and happiness for everybody.

16

February 2020

Communication will always bring better ways to work together”. Wise words indeed and there is no better example of this than Pasykaf, created by Anna, a woman to be admired by all. Pasykaf relies on fundraising so that they can offer free treatment to all. If you would like to donate or would like further information, please see www.pasykaf.org.

TITLE DEED, OR NO TITLE DEED, THAT IS THE QUESTION! By Demetris Demetriades

Barrister at Law Gray’s Inn | Head of Conveyancing and Immigration Department | Andreas Demetriades & Co LLC

Anyone interested in a finished property should think twice before buying without a separate Title Deed in place. And just to be clear on this matter, this caution does not apply to buyers of properties under construction or off-plan properties, since a separate Title Deed can only be issued once a property has actually been completed. Such buyers can be protected by other legal and contractual mechanisms and should always seek legal advice to guide them through the process.

WHAT IS A TITLE DEED? Also known as a Certificate of Registration of Immovable Property, a Title Deed is a true copy paper record of the official Land Registry Record which confirms the name of the legal owner of the property and secures your rights against third-party claims for past or future liabilities of the initial seller or developer. Once the Title Deed has been transferred into your name, no one can register a claim on your property without your consent or for debts that are not connected to you. WHAT DOES A TITLE DEED SAY? It also contains important information such as the location, the size of the property, the nature of the building (whether it’s a plot of land, building plot, apartment, house etc.), as well as information relating to the rights or obligations attached to the property. Such obligations could be a share to the communal area with a swimming pool or a right of way across your property to a public access road. Similarly, it can disclose that your right of ownership is subject to the right of a third party to use it for his lifetime, or even a covenant setting limitations as to how high you can build

your property. Nowadays, a Title Deed will also contain notes referring to any building irregularities or boundary disputes. HOW IS A TITLE DEED ISSUED? Once the construction of a property is completed, the Owner (if you are building on your own plot of land) or the Developer (if the property is part of a bigger project) must apply for the issue of a Certificate of Final Approval and a Certificate of Division of the Project and submit certified copies of the Building Permit and the Certificates to the Land Registry so that they can start the process of issuing the updated Title Deed (to reflect the building erected on the land) or the separate Title Deed for each unit on the project. After a series of checks and onsite inspections, the separate Title Deeds are finally issued. Such a meticulous process does result in a fault-proof result; however, all these elongated and repetitive procedures and checks lead to substantial delays in getting the Title Deed finally issued. Admittedly, significant improvements in the process have come into effect over the last few years, shortening the Title Deed issue process, but only a complete overhaul of the procedures would reduce such a timescale effectively .

19

PROPERTY NEWS I DON’T WANT TO PAY THE TRANSFER FEES. SHOULD I TRANSFER THE TITLE DEED INTO MY NAME ONCE IT IS ISSUED? A transfer fee is payable to the Land Registry at the time of transfer of the Title Deed into your name. Such fees are calculated on a sliding scale with the highest band being 4%. The Assignment Process does allow you nowadays to simply assign your contractual rights to the new purchaser so that he “steps into your shoes” and has the Title Deed transferred directly into his name. Although you save money this way, there are some risks associated with not transferring the separate Title Deed into your name once it is issued and while you are waiting for that buyer to come along. It could scare away potential buyers, or should the primary seller or developer run in debt; it could block your property sale until you remove the obstacle via a legal process.

CAN I GET A LOAN FROM A BANK IN CYPRUS IF I AM BUYING A PROPERTY WITHOUT A TITLE DEED? It is highly unlikely that any Banking Institution in Cyprus would grant you a loan for the purchase of a finished property without a separate Title Deed. Nowadays, banks take extra precautions in granting loans to homeowners, and they will be looking for the added security of having a Mortgage filed on the separate Title Deed than any other form of security. My personal opinion is that anyone buying a finished property nowadays, especially one which has been finished for a few years, should look for a separate Title Deed to be in place. There are simply too many risks! For more guidance, please call on +357 26 811 668 or email ddlaw@logos.cy.net.

Having legal representation in place is your no.1 step to a hassle-free purchase.

During her career as a lecturer, and inspired by her pupils, she became more ethically aware of the materials used in fashion production. She could also see the damaging effects

of mass manufacturing and the inherent value in repurposing beautiful, used fabrics. As Juliet states, “I have this in-built enthusiasm and passion for the curious, whether it be vintage finds that can be incorporated into a new garment or an old black and white photograph that inspires a new fashion design. I always find myself returning to the quality and importance of the homespun, artisan skills I first learnt as a pattern cutter. I have a constant drive to produce garments that others will treasure while using fabrics from the past”. Hence, The Curious Courtyard was established in Lemona as a showcase for Juliet’s work. A selection of her work is on display there, and she has had a busy season working away in her studio. Juliet told us, “This winter has seen a fantastic range of repurposed, vintage Indian cotton sarees, which have been Kantha stitched in Jaipur and then I cut and redesign into stylish coats. I am very excited about developing my new range for spring and summer. I will be using lighter fabrics, including silks and linens. The clothes are designed for climates like ours. Each item is unique and has a story to tell.”

USING THE ISLAND’S RESOURCES WHEREVER POSSIBLE… The buttons for her jackets are made of olive wood which is sourced from the village of Lemona. The Curious Courtyard, as a brand, has made a deliberate decision to use the Island’s resources wherever possible. This means that the ethos of

creating genuinely unique items can be adhered to. No two are ever the same. The Courtyard is well worth a visit to see the latest fashion creations and a selection of accessories, including vintage furnishing bags, driftwood jewellery, hand-painted Balinese cotton kimonos for the summer, scarves made from Indian fabrics, boho aprons made from post-war tablecloths and garden aprons made from vintage sugar and flour sacks.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

THE PEOPLE MAKE THE PRICE MEET DUNCAN WILLS & TREVOR JONES DIRECTORS, CASTLE AUCTIONS

The definition of an auction is a public sale where goods are sold to the highest bidder. As Duncan Wills, Director at Castle Auctions, says, “Public auctions are a fast and fair way to sell goods because participants bid openly against each other and the item is sold to the bidder who offers to pay the most. Effectively, the people make the price”. This way of selling is exactly what Castle Auctions do from their facility, just off the highway in Limassol. They hold fortnightly sales which consist of a diverse range of movable objects, including furniture, rugs, motor vehicles, machinery, art, watches, jewellery and anything else the people of Cyprus no longer need, sometimes referred to as ‘pre-loved’. They also hold specialist sales and on-site dispersal sales for businesses. From individual items to the contents of whole villas, shops and warehouses, the auctions offer a fascinating range of products at excellent prices. Duncan Wills grew up in the South West of England and enjoyed a career in the banking

sector before his relocation to Cyprus. At a young age, he sang in a Cathedral choir, so performing in front of people has never fazed him. Duncan has a keen interest in public speaking and was a member of Toastmaster International. He has been an active member of the Lions which organises charity fundraising events, and with them, he has raised thousands for many local charities. At Castle Auctions, he is a Director and the Principal Auctioneer. He lives in Pachna with his family and three Cyprus rescue dogs. Trevor Jones also relocated to Cyprus from the South West of England. After his career in estate agency, he continued with property marketing in Cyprus for several years, together with a holiday lettings company, web development and SEO consultancy. After Trevor sold his company, he went into partnership with Duncan to start Castle Auctions, as they saw the opportunity and potential demand on the Island. He is also a Director at Castle Auctions and lives in Emba in Paphos.

“WE ESTABLISHED CASTLE AUCTIONS IN 2011.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. Duncan: I started coming to Cyprus in 2003 and loved it right from the start. Initially, I came to visit family here, but I soon realised that I wanted to stay. In the UK, I was a Regional Manager of one of the leading banks in the South West of England. I always had an interest in antiques throughout my life and I was directly involved in both property auctions and general sales through my work at the bank, where we owned both estate agents and auction salerooms. It was in the UK that I had my first experience of being an auctioneer. We established Castle Auctions in 2011 from our original premises, which were just across the road from Kolossi Castle - hence the name. When we started, we just did general sales and discovered a huge demand for this method of selling chattels in Cyprus. As demand grew, we realised that we needed larger premises and relocated to our current site, which gives us the facility to hold multiple auctions at the same time. Trevor: We both actually met in the UK and I have known Duncan for about twenty-five years. Back then, I was working in an estate agency in the UK which I did for several years in Cornwall. I was a Branch Manager for an independent chain. In 2004, like Duncan, I started going back and forth between the UK and Cyprus with the main aim being to live here permanently. Initially, I continued with property marketing but then decided to partner with Duncan and start the auction house, as we could both see the massive demand for this service. The auction house is an extension of both of our skills as we were both very familiar with the auction process and could see the benefits of introducing it on a professional level to Cyprus.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER BID AT AN AUCTION BEFORE? Trevor: The auction process is straightforward and effortless. You have the option to attend the auction and bid in person, or listen, watch and bid online from home, your mobile or workplace. A few days before the auction, we publish a full picture catalogue of every lot, including a description, photographs and starting guide price. This is followed by two full “viewing days” where people can come and have a closer look at the lots for auction. Sometimes customers cannot make it to the auction day or bid online, so they have the option to leave an absentee bid which authorises us to bid on their behalf. Successful bids are legally binding, and once payment is made, lots can be collected and removed immediately or we can arrange island wide or international delivery.

“OUR ONLINE AUCTION GIVES US ACCESS TO OVER 200,000 COLLECTORS WORLDWIDE.”

“WE BOTH FIRMLY BELIEVE IN GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY.” 31

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ITEMS TO SELL? Duncan: You never know week on week what will be for sale and it is always fascinating to me what people bring in, however, I love to see the saleroom full of antiques. Even if the items are not things you necessarily want to own or have space for, it is so interesting to see items created for lives in a bygone age. I enjoy the craftsmanship, beauty and imagining their uses, which we may not need in our lives today but were an essential part of everyday life back then. I love Victoriana, an amazing period of invention, industrialisation and expansion, and like many people, I admire the quality of antique pieces of furniture. Earlier this year we sold the most beautiful Walnut Court Cabinet. It had the most amazing carvings in the wood and was full of symbolisms and allegorical figures. There was so much detail you couldn’t take it all in at once. I could sit and stare at it for hours discovering new features. A Court Cabinet comes from Elizabethan and Jacobean times when there weren’t any banks and people displayed their wealth through certain key items of furniture in their home, like a Tester Bed, a Great Chair and a Court Cabinet, the sideboard of the period, where they displayed their silver and gold. It was a statement piece of furniture designed to demonstrate the owner’s prosperity and status and designed to be impressive, so they were always beautifully decorated. I am passionate about antique furniture because of the skill involved in making pieces which you just do not see in massproduced machine-made furniture today. It is also fun to sell the luxury pieces; we recently sold a

32

“WE ARE THE ONLY AUCTION HOUSE IN CYPRUS THAT HAS THE FACILITY TO BID LIVE ONLINE.” magnificent 3-carat diamond ring to the loveliest couple who have been married for many years, and we have also sold some fantastic cars, such as a Bentley and a Rolls Royce. We also have our own classic car at the auction house, which is a part of our team. ‘Stanley’ is our much loved 1957 Austin A35 Countryman Van. Many of our customers learnt to drive in A35’s but if you are of a younger generation, you might have seen one starring alongside Wallace and Gromit in the popular films. He is very small and sweet and makes you happy to drive him or just to see him out on the road where he gets lots of friendly waves and smiles from other motorists. However, after enjoying his company for the last 5 years, we have decided it is time for someone else to enjoy Stanley and we currently have him for sale. Trevor: As for me, I do enjoy cars as well, but I also like clocks and watches. We get quite a range of timepieces through the saleroom, which always attract collectors on the Island and worldwide attention through our website and online bidding platform. Watches, jewellery and other small collectable items are easy to pack for shipping anywhere. Myself, I have a small collection of interesting timepieces including Cuckoo clocks which I have restored myself, and a particular liking for Omega watches.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMMERCIAL SALES. Trevor: Over the years we have often had the contents of closed down restaurants, shops and offices come through the auction. However, Cyprus’s first formal liquidation sale on behalf of the Bank of Cyprus was an exciting challenge. We were appointed by their receiver managers to responsibly dispose of all the assets and clear the premises of Pierides Lighting and Electrical. By advertising the sale and holding a public auction, we sold absolutely everything for the best price we could achieve on behalf of the client. There is an EU directive which states that public auctions are a fair, transparent and responsible way to sell assets. They were the biggest electrical distributors in Cyprus with a large and impressive lighting showroom and vast warehousing. Everything had to be sold, and the building had to be delivered back to the bank within a fixed timeframe. Duncan: There was a 3.4-million-euro balance sheet of stock which ranged from Trucks and Forklifts to lightbulbs, power tools and luxury lighting such as Swarovski crystal chandeliers with a retail price of 34,000 euros. It took us approximately one month just to complete the inventory and prepare the catalogues. In the end, we had four on-site auctions over a period of 2 weeks. Every single item was sold and the entire building was completely cleared. We had excellent attendance at the auction and many online bidders. We were delighted with the volume of bidding on all the lots. Due to the success of the numerous commercial sales we have carried out so far, we hope to continue to receive more instructions in the future. The process of selling is fast and removes the trouble of storing goods, buyer negotiations, viewing appointments and turns unwanted assets into cash.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“WE GET QUITE A RANGE OF TIMEPIECES THROUGH THE SALEROOM, WHICH ALWAYS ATTRACT COLLECTORS ON THE ISLAND AND WORLDWIDE.”

IN THE EVENT OF A DEATH, YOU OFTEN SELL THE CONTENTS OF A HOME ON BEHALF OF A FAMILY. HOW DOES THAT WORK? Duncan: Cyprus is a very international Island with a large population of expats who we regularly sell items for when they move. Additionally, sadly, people pass away and we are instructed to assist with home clearances on behalf of their estate. One of the tasks of an estate executor is to responsibly dispose of the household goods left behind by a deceased homeowner. Often the beneficiaries do not live on the Island and do not realistically have the time to deal with disposing of the large inventory of furniture and other goods usually involved. This can often be accomplished most efficiently through an auction. Additionally, most people do not normally appreciate the value of second hand items and collectables, especially with regard to the different markets internationally. We can help to ensure that items of significant value that may be overlooked by non-experts aren’t missed. Any items we consider unsuitable for auction will be appropriately disposed of. We can, if required, clear the whole property on their behalf, making the process as stress-free as possible. Auctions are such a good way of getting a fair price for an object. If there is a family who has to dispose of a relative’s estate, this is the most honest way to establish the value, and the money can be shared. The people who attend the auction set the price and market value. It is a fair, transparent, honest and open way to sell items. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Duncan: For me, it is the excitement. You never know what you are going to get through the door. In Cyprus, we have such a varied population with leading business people, forces personnel and even diplomats amongst our clients. Very often, customers have built up lifetime collections

34

February 2020

which they want to realise and get the best price for. We have the responsibility to do our best and get our clients the highest price. We have an excellent general knowledge of many things, but for more specialist areas, we can bring in the expertise. We have the tools to research and to ascertain a market value that the public otherwise would not have access to. Recently we had a collection of models from a customer whose husband had passed away. The customer had been offered 1000 euros for them but we achieved over 17,000 euros with models being sent all over the world. Trevor: Most things these days are portable throughout the world. It can be gratifying to see items going off to their buyers across the globe. We have exported items to Russia, America, Australia and across Europe. We once filled a 40ft container with crystal light fittings and sent them to China. IS BEING ONLINE A BIG PART OF YOUR BUSINESS? Duncan: We are the only auction house in Cyprus that has the facility to bid live and watch the auction online. This opens us up to a whole new market who can buy our goods. You don’t even need to come to the auction house. Our online auction gives us access to over 200,000 collectors worldwide. This means that registered buyers will receive an alert if we list an item of interest to them. We introduced our online auction service 18 months ago and it now accounts for 50% of all our sales. Trevor: Yes this has opened us up to a much bigger audience of buyers. We have seen, since going online, that our catalogue views have increased dramatically and we are regularly shipping all over the world. It gives people the ability to sit on the beach and participate in the auction online.

WHAT DO YOU BOTH DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Duncan: Since I arrived on Cyprus, I have enjoyed all sorts of activities and joined a number of clubs including Dragon Boating, Island Blend Harmony Choir, Toastmasters, and Lions International. I have walked 500kms of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James) in Spain, drive Stanley, our classic car and a touring motorcycle. I also enjoy cooking and winning a bitterly fought family baking contest for Lemon Drizzle Cake! I am regularly asked to help write wedding and best man speeches, funeral eulogies and am currently taking this to the next level by taking diploma courses to be a civil celebrant. Trevor: I like most outdoor activities and am very happy to live so close to the Akamas and Troodos where I enjoy walking. I have recently returned from a trekking holiday to the Himalayas in Nepal, which was an amazing experience. Our destination was Everest Base Camp, and we made it. It was the most beautiful and stunning scenery. I do enjoy travelling as often as possible, together with watersports during the summer months and snowboarding in the winter. YOU DO A LOT FOR CHARITY - WHY IS THIS? Duncan: We both firmly believe in giving back to our community. Whether it is an animal or people’s charity, we all have the ability to support. We are lucky that Castle Auctions is a very friendly and social place, and our customers are brilliant at joining forces with us to raise money for a good cause. We hold many charity auctions where our staff give up their time and we provide our services, for free. Trevor: We always try to get the highest market price for our clients and sell their assets in the timeliest fashion. This extends through to charity. We work with many charities and have raised thousands over the years. Since we started, we have sold more than 180,000 lots, so it is only right that we give back to the community. Last month we sold some paintings with all the money going directly to the cancer charity, Pasykaf. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS AT CASTLE AUCTIONS? Duncan: There have been huge changes to the Cyprus economy in recent years and to the government, businesses and bank’s commitment to get things moving. A large part of that is the growing dedication and interest to clear dead stock and liquidate business assets to realise capital which can be invested for growth and employment. We are focused on expanding our offer to businesses whilst maintaining our general sales. For us, we can take our mobile unit which provides for plasma TVs, auction equipment and our trained staff to locations across Cyprus to sell their items and work for any client either in the commercial or private sector. We have a growing database of thousands of customers, and we look forward to continuing to develop relationships with them in the future. Trevor: We are also very excited about a specialist auction we have planned for this year. Unfortunately, we are not able to reveal the details yet, but it will be world-class and a first of its kind in Cyprus. We expect buyers to be flying in from all over the world. We will let you know as soon as we announce it! Photography by Amita Cathcart and Lee Squirrell Photography

BUSINESS NEWS

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LIQUIDATION AUCTIONS? AUCTIONING OUR WAY TO A GROWING CYPRIOT ECONOMY By Duncan Wills, Director, Castle Auctions

The Cyprus Finance Ministry recently highlighted the urgent need to reduce the banking systems’ non-performing loans (NPL) by 40% (€8.2 billion) in the current financial year as compared to 2017. To the uniniated, a nonperforming loan is one where the borrower is unable to service their debt or pay it back to the banks, resulting in potential bad debts and losses to the lender. As banks are the foundation of a country’s financial stability, on a larger scale it implies instability in a country’s economy with associated painful consequences. Cyprus’s ‘haircut’ is still a very raw memory for many. The Cypriot banking system’s total NPL at the end of 2017 amounted to a whopping 40% of lending which is about €20.6 Billion. This is the second highest percentage in Europe, with Greece taking first place. However efforts are underway to reduce this percentage and help Cyprus’s economy recover. Liquidation auctions, used effectively across the rest of Europe and the USA, have been highlighted as a key mechanism to improve the health of our banks. More on that, later. Firstly, one needs to acknowledge the link between NPL and a country’s economy. There has been numerous research that have noted the correlation between NPL and a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and overall economic growth. And it is easy to understand why. If a bank is not earning interest and is potentially also losing the money it lent to borrowers; it implies that it will no longer have money to lend to other businesses and individuals. Hence anyone requiring loans for wealth and job creation will be unable obtain financing and this will set into effect a vicious cycle of

36

February 2020

money shortage. In this scenario, at a very micro-economic level, what can a bank do? One of the many steps it can ultimately take, having exhausted other methods, is to sell the assets of a non performing borrower as collateral, and try to recover as much money as possible.

THIS IS WHERE AUCTIONS COME IN. To repossess and sell someone’s assets is an emotionally charged and distressing situation, and the idea of an individual losing their home is extremely unpopular. But when it comes to business loans, where a company has failed and its employees have not been paid and are jobless, auctions are a fair and open method for the banks to recover what money they can to reinvest in new and existing healthy businesses, helping to break financial deadlock and setting into motion new job creation opportunities. The process is that the lender, through its agents, puts up for sale, all the movable and immovable properties of the defaulting business.

It is the quickest and simplest method of resolving NPLs versus some of the other methods which involve repackaging the NPL and selling them in secondary markets. Very simplistically, every €1 the bank recovers from nonperforming loans can be re-lent to new and existing healthy businesses. These businesses, thanks to the influx of funds are able to hire new employees, who now earn salaries which they can spend on basic necessities and a few luxuries. This means a rise in the number of business transactions taking place in the country, creating a positive ripple effect in the economy. Thus, even a single auction can be a highly effective tool in breaking the deadlock in the supply of funds available for lending in a recovering banking system. This method has been supported by several government agencies and economic think tanks. In a March 2018 memo released by the European Commission, it proposes, ‘outof-court collateral enforcement’ as one of the key steps for

reigning in NPLs. To elaborate, it means that banks would be able to auction collaterals in a business loan in an expedited manner without having to go to court, speeding up the process of recovering loans and reducing losses. Specific to Cyprus, the Finance Ministry in its recently issued Stability Programme (2018-2021), mulled over the benefits of auctions in recovering loans and proposed the introduction of certain provisions which will enable electronic auctions of properties, in the country. Even from the debtor’s perspective, public auctions ensure that a fair market price of the asset has been achieved because the process is democratic. The market makes the price, given that the person willing to pay the most for the item, wins it. To summarise, in more ways than one, liquidity auctions are a very important part of helping Cyprus’s economic recovery and should be viewed positively in that process.

THEY ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF CYPRUS’S WOES BUT THEY ARE PART OF THE CURE!

WINE COLUMN Written by George Kassianos President of Cyprus Sommeliers Association

EXCELLENT WINES SINCE 1987 Panayia Village, Pafos Region

VOUNI PANAYIAS WINERY

Dining at local wineries in Cyprus is becoming quite the trend. Ranking as number one venues for dining events, the wineries offer traditional cuisine and are building a strong reputation among food and wine lovers across the Island. Vouni Panayias Winery provides a very high-quality gastronomic experience, as well as some of the most delicious wines Cyprus has to offer. Vouni Panayias Winery opened in the village of Panayia, Pafos Region, over 30 years ago. It offers excellent views of the region’s escarpment and unforgettable landscapes of undulating vineyards. The essence of this beautiful location can not only be visually admired but also tasted in the wines that reflect this unique growing area in Cyprus. The Vouni Panayias Winery is one of the largest on the island. A great achievement for the owner, Andreas Kyriakides, who previously worked in the Department of Viticulture and Oenology as a production assistant for 14 years. He also spent a lot of time in the laboratory and the fields before deciding to start a new venture in producing his own wine. His brother and cousin are also part of this success story and have been from the start. Production began with 100,000 bottles in 1987 when they started and has reached up to half a million! The winery is built in local stone with wooden windows and close to 3 million euros was spent on its last refurbishment. The wine cellar and stored bottles are positioned on the ground floor, along with the bottling section and an area devoted to the production of traditional grape juice sweets, such as Palouzes, Soutzoukos and Kiofteria. The reception and tasting area are large enough to accommodate one hundred people. The restaurant follows and is adjacent to the grape delivery and vinification section of the winery. We then move from the first to the second floor, where they have offices and a chemical laboratory, as well as a display area, with photographs of viticulture and viniculture. With 12 hectares of vineyards positioned at an altitude ranging from 900 to 1,150 metres, Kyriakides uses local varieties, such as Mavro, Maratheftiko and Xynisteri. Over the last few years, the winery is also producing Spourtiko, Promara and Yiannoudi - the new kids on the block. Moreover, the geological composition of certain vineyard soils is particularly fascinating at Vouni Panayia, resulting in the family performing trials with micro vinification. A study of the soils, carried out by the Kyriakides clan, have allowed vineyard management to focus on a micro-cru philosophy, which is far more precise than typical parcel management. It is in an unspoilt area where you need a four-wheel drive to take you around. The scenery and the views are stunning, but the real treasures are the vines themselves, with a new type released every year. I cannot wait to get my tasting glass.

WINE NEWS

THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF WINE… NEW WINES FROM EKFRASEIS WINERY 1. ONAR, CABERNET FRANC This is the result of an expression of flavours from the Ekfraseis Winery’ mountainous vineyards. The variety of Cabernet Franc is perfectly adapted into the climatic conditions of the area and this takes this wine to a whole new level. The ripening period is longer than the usual one and it ends when the grape harvest begins. After the harvest, the wine stays in oak barrels for

2. MADARI HILLS COLLECTION, SAUVIGNON BLANC The grape harvest is divided into two different phases. The first is the premature one and this is followed by the late one that finishes at the beginning of September. The main goal is to add extra sophistication and intensity of aromas into the wine, while at the same time keeping the acidity of the wine’s variety at high levels. They also take into consideration the variety’s characteristics with the duration of the ripening, carefully bringing them out. The bottling happens during December of the same year.

approximately 12 months. The extended stay of the wine in the cellar makes Onar even richer in flavours and aromas. Description: Herbal scents framed with dark coloured fruits. Vanilla, smoke and spicy hints. Rich, intense and delightful. Distinctive acidity, fine texture and long-lasting finish. Pair with: Red meat, hard and aged cheeses, spicy and/or smoked dishes. The fine-tuning of this precise variety in the low temperature climate of Madari, and the ground of the area, turns this wine into the perfect example of how a Sauvignon should be. The fruit reaches the right point of ripening and is then used according to the international practices of vinification. Description: Rich, chilled and balanced with aromas of exotic fruits and botanic notes with a mineral aftertaste. Pair with: Fish, shellfish, seafood, white meat, white sauces, pesto, mushroom sauces, vegetables and goat cheese.

Ekfraseis Wines are available exclusively at Wine & More by French Depot.

HOW IS THE WEATHER GOING TO AFFECT THE WINES OF 2020? We have spoken to two wine experts to get their opinion on how the wet weather throughout this winter may have an impact on this year’s harvest.

TSANGARIDES WINERY

VASILIKON WINERY

Angelos Tsangarides, from Tsangarides Winery in Lemona, told us, “With the weather still to come until September, it is very difficult to say. Certainly, if we refer back to 2019, the wet winter had a positive impact on the vines. Also, because we had a mild summer with no heatwaves, this helped us as well. Throughout the whole year we were lucky that we were disease-free and there was no heavy hail. 2019 was an exceptional year for white and rosé wines. We must bear in mind that every area is different”.

Giannis Kyriakides, from Vasilikon Winery in Kathikas, states “The weather to date is certainly not presenting us with any problems. It all depends on when we have the rain in April and May. Presently the vines are sleeping and the rain is not a bad thing for them. The problem might be when the vines have leaves and grapes which will make them susceptible to the weather”.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

ACROPOLIS TAVERN A DESTINATION DINING EXPERIENCE.

Driving out of Paphos on the Polis Road, we will all have often seen the large, impressive stone building that is Acropolis Tavern, sitting proudly at the Mesogi traffic lights. For some reason, I have always been en route to somewhere else and never taken the time to go there for a meal. However, on this occasion, the destination was Acropolis for lunch.

RELAUNCHED UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. The restaurant was relaunched in March last year with a new management team at the helm. Acropolis is owned by Spyros Georgiou who has previously owned restaurants in France and runs other establishments in Paphos. The tavern for him though is his pride and joy, and he has created a restaurant offering relaxed dining with excellent traditional and international food at the heart of it. In the kitchen, he has Head Chef Stelios with his assistant Ivan, while in front of house he has Charlotte as his General Manager and the very friendly waiter, Marco. Charlotte has many years of past experience in Paphos and South Africa where she had her own restaurant. Together they make a formidable team. The restaurant is large with both inside and outside seating areas. It is decorated in the traditional style with village taverna chairs and tablecloths. The whole place is spotlessly clean. The menu is divided into clear sections at very affordable prices - salads, cold starters, hot starters, BBQ souvla, meats from the grill, local dishes, steaks and fresh fish.

COOKED TO PERFECTION! Pitta bread, dips and a village salad were served, followed by three different starters. The Mushrooms à la Crème was piping hot and very tasty. This was accompanied by Halloumi and Zucchini with Eggs. The constant theme throughout the meal was that everything was cooked to perfection, full of flavour and not covered in grease, which can be the case with some of these traditional dishes.

For the main course, we enjoyed a Moussaka. This was delicious with layer after layer of fresh ingredients. It was light in texture, and a very generous portion served with a side salad and home-made chips. All together with the friendly service, it was an excellent dining experience.

LIVE GREEK MUSIC EVERY WEEKEND. At the weekends they have live Greek music. Several future events are planned for 2020 including barbecue and tropical nights on the large outdoor terrace. Acropolis is now indeed a destination dining experience, and we look forward to returning soon.

THE PLACE TO BE

THE PLACE TO BE

VINTAGE ART HOUSE ESPRESSO BAR A SETTING SUITED TO EVERYONE.

Set amongst a tree-lined frontage, you might drive past Vintage Art House Espresso Bar and not even know it is there. It is a well-kept secret on a quiet street, not too far from the Law Courts. Positioned in a beautiful 1930’s old colonial-style building, this is a gem in Paphos. The inside is bustling with an eclectic mix of antiques and art, which serve as a reminder that this beautiful building was an antique shop before its conversion to a coffee house. There are small terraces and rooms inside to choose from, including a smoking room to the side. The outside space offers real comfort in both the front and back gardens. In the warmer months, there is a large outside bar where major sporting events are shown on the huge outdoor screen. The coffee (both hot and cold options) is excellent with the beans supplied by the exclusive Beanhaus Coffee Roasters of Paphos. If you fancy a glass of wine, they have the small ‘airline’ bottles from Tsangarides Winery. They also serve a range of cocktails, but their most popular drink is called a ‘Vintage Gin and Tonic’ which offers an alternative to this classic drink using fresh pink grapefruit and herbs. In the mornings, together with their specialty coffees, they serve pastries and croissants. For the rest of the day, you are allowed to take in or have your own take away food delivered, which is a unique and generous option. Vintage is owned by the charming Marios Kezelis, a former bank manager who started the business in July 2016. Marios told us “My main aim with Vintage was to create an environment where people could come and relax, while serving the best beverages we could source”. A very friendly team supports him. Vintage is conveniently positioned right in the middle of the commercial district of Paphos and has plentiful free parking to the rear of the building. Thus, Vintage offers a perfect setting to sit, eat and enjoy the company of your friends.

What’s in Season in Cyprus?

Due to winter, the only local seasonal fruits are oranges, lemons and bananas. I buy most of mine from the fruit and vegetable market in the big car park in Paphos Old Town.

Which Wine?

Kassianos recommends Argyrides Winery’, Mourvèdre Lemesos 2016 or 2017 with this dish, for its “…brilliant acidity and tannin structure with lush fruit and texture. The black cherry flavours and spice are pure and vivid”. Also available in various Cavas island wide. “This month I am loving the pure taste of ‘Armakadi Extra Virgin Olive Oil’, available from the new Oliver’s Delicatessen, near the municipal buildings”.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

A MEDICAL RESPONSIBILITY ST.GEORGE’S POLYCLINIC AND BLUE CROSS MEDICAL CENTRE

St.George’s Polyclinic and the Blue Cross Medical Centre have joined forces to create a unique and comprehensive medical facility for the Pafos region. Their combined experience, expertise and resources, together with their state-of-the-art medical equipment means they can offer the highest standard of medical care. Here we meet three key figures from the hospital and find out about their roles caring for the population of Paphos.

February 2020

MEET Dr. ANTONIOS ECONOMIDES

WHY DID YOU SPECIALISE IN UROLOGY?

General Surgeon, Urologist and President of the Board of Directors

I have had a family interest in kidneys for a very long time. I have also been involved and been a Past President of the Paphos Kidney Association. The Association aims to fundraise for the much-needed equipment and support the patients. Patients who rely on dialysis need support and anything we can do to make that easier has got to be a good thing.

Dr. Antonios Economides was born in Peyia and brought up in Paphos. After attending Medical School at the University of Athens, he relocated to the UK in 1974 where he continued his training in General Surgery in Birmingham. After Dr Antonios finished his General Surgery training, he continued his studies in Urology. In Birmingham, he was the Resident Surgical Officer and was the only doctor who was allowed to have two specialities in General Surgery and Urology. Originally, he wanted to be a Civil Engineer but his mother wanted him to be a doctor and follow in the footsteps of his uncle. Today he lives in Paphos and is a father of three. WHY DID YOU RETURN TO CYPRUS? It was always my intention to return to Cyprus and come home. I had many options all over the world after I had spent nine years in Birmingham, but I was very happy to set up my clinic in Paphos in 1983. Initially, I opened a small clinic called Blue Cross, and I was also working part-time in Athens. I later went on to open St.George’s Hospital with some colleagues and then in the 1990’s we opened the Blue Cross Hospital with some other medical professionals.

We have a specialist Lithotripsy Unit at the hospital. It is a complete unit for the breakdown of kidney stones. We break the stones down from the outside without the need for an operation, and most patients can be treated as a day case. Lithotripsy is a procedure which uses shock waves to break up stones in the kidney, bladder, or ureter. Once the procedure has taken place, the stone pieces pass out of the body in the patient’s urine. We are the only unit in Paphos, and we are very pleased to offer this treatment as there is a dramatic reduction in recovery time. At both our hospitals, we firmly believe that the constant reinvestment in the latest medical technology is in the longterm best interests of our patients.

55

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

We spent in excess of 120,000 euros on our Holmium laser machine which is used to treat an enlarged prostate. This means the surgery is bloodless, and patients can go home the next day. Recovery is fast and uncomplicated. WHAT IS THE BEST MEDICAL ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE OUR READERS? I firmly believe that prevention is the main advice to everyone. Regular check-ups are essential. For example, mammograms and prostate check-ups should take place on an annual basis. The Greek physician Hippocrates, who is one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine, stated that, “prevention is better than treatment” and I thoroughly agree with that statement. Of course, a big part of our medical health is our lifestyle. We need to be careful what we eat and drink and should not smoke. Moreover, we must exercise. All the research studies into exercise prove beyond doubt, that exercise is very, very important at reducing your chances of some diseases. TELL US ABOUT THE NEW RENAL UNIT WHICH IS PLANNED. It is very exciting to be opening a new Renal Unit at our St. George’s Hospital. The need for a good kidney unit in Paphos has existed for many years. We are very happy to be investing in and opening this facility which will improve the lives of our patients. We are planning to have a space which will be divided into 13 units. It is a purpose-built Renal Unit and has been designed to offer privacy and space for the patients. It is being built according to EU regulations. 10 of the 13 units will be offered for everyday use and two as reserve machines in case there is a problem. This way we can continue the dialysis straight away. We are also keeping one unit as an emergency option. We will have two very experienced doctors as part of the Renal Unit and a medical team who will support them. The unit will offer TVs and WIFI to make the time pass for the patients whilst they have their treatment. We are planning to open the unit in May of this year. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON GESY? Personally, I am very much in favour of making all healthcare available to all. We look forward to working and supporting the Ministry of Health. We have been educating our nursing team with further training, renovating theatres and buying new equipment to be prepared for the additional patients. WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS AT ST.GEORGE’S AND BLUE CROSS HOSPITALS? We have had a very busy time recently with the opening of the first Cath Lab in Paphos. Whilst we are working on the new Renal Unit, we are also doing a number of improvements across both hospitals. A new radiologist is being employed and will operate an additional CT machine, as well as a radiographer who is very experienced in doing mammograms and who will be using a new digital mammogram. We are also bringing in a gamma camera which will be used for thyroid scans and other investigations. It is the only gamma camera in both Limassol and Paphos and is based at our MRI centre. At St. George’s Hospital we are aiming to create an Obstetric Unit which will provide care for pregnant women. This will be a combined project with other doctors from the Pafos region. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I used to play volleyball and football but now I enjoy the sport as a spectator. I am also President of Pafiakos volleyball team. I very much enjoy watching the matches which can take me all over Cyprus. As I grew up in nature, I still enjoy gardening, especially in my garden at my house in Kallepia. I love the nature surrounding this village.

“I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT PREVENTION IS THE BEST ADVICE TO EVERYONE.”

MEET GEORGE KANIKLIDES

“WE ARE CONTINUALLY STRIVING TO IMPROVE OUR SERVICES…”

General Manager, St George’s & Blue Cross Hospitals

George Kaniklides was born and brought up in Nicosia. After his military service, he left Cyprus to study in the UK where he did his Batchelor’s degree in Hotel Management in Birmingham. He returned to the Island and worked in several hotels in both Limassol and Paphos. Later on, George went on to study for his Master’s degree in International Hotels and Tourism, on a scholarship at Oxford and was awarded the accolade of “Top Student” of his year. George then returned to Cyprus and continued his career in hotels. In 2012, when the St. George’s Hospital and Blue Cross Hospital merged, he became the General Manager of both hospitals. He lives in Paphos with his wife and is a father of two. YOUR POSITION SOUNDS LIKE IT HAS A LOT OF RESPONSIBILITY - WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL? I am responsible for all estate management and the day-to-day running of two large hospitals. I oversee staff, arrange all purchasing and solve problems that may occur. I deal with payments and accounts as well. A large part of my job is keeping on top of building maintenance. Through my work, I have learnt a lot about the medical profession. To do my job, I need to be familiar with all aspects. Another part of it is attending the regular meetings with the Ministry of Health, usually having to do with the various aspects of GESY. I am also in continual communication with our doctors, in order to help with any issues, they may have. HOW DO YOU THINK GESY IS GOING? It is very busy and going very well. Initially, the General Healthcare System was very busy, but now we are seeing it calm down. We are keen to support the Ministry of Health through discussions to correct some of the procedures they are following. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EMERGENCY AMBULANCE SERVICE. While we have a department head of this service, I am in overall charge. We have developed this

57

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

service from a single initial ambulance to five today. We also have two wheelchair cars and a wheelchair minibus. The membership of our service gives people real peace of mind. In the event of unfortunately needing an ambulance, we will be there as soon as possible. Our staff are mainly British and come from an NHS or military background. HOW MANY STAFF DO YOU HAVE AT ST. GEORGE’S AND BLUE CROSS HOSPITALS? We are working closely with over 80 doctors in both hospitals and a staff of over 100 members. We have specialists in all areas of medicine so we can treat the patients under our care. For example, we have a specialist neurosurgeon called Dr Michael Spyrou, who works from the hospital. Every Friday, we have Dr George Astras, who comes down from the American Hospital in Nicosia to offer private chemotherapy. In our endoscopy and colonoscopy department, we have the gastroenterologist, Dr Stelios Papasavvas. We also have an extensive Physio department with four physiotherapists who work closely with our patients during their recovery. WHAT MAKES THE ST. GEORGE AND BLUE CROSS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER HOSPITALS? We are continually striving to improve our services and make the latest medical techniques and equipment available to our patients. Our priority is to care for our patients and to help them recover from any medical incident they might have suffered. An example of a unique service that we offer, is having the only lithotriptor in Paphos and Limassol. This is used by our specialist, Dr Economides, to destroy kidney stones with sonic waves. It is the safest and most comfortable way to treat this issue. We are also very proud of our newly opened PAPHOS INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY CENTRE, but Dr Andreou, our director of that department can tell you more about that. DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT HELP WITH YOUR CURRENT ROLE? Yes, it does, as hospitals and hotels have strong similarities. All of our hospital bedrooms are en suite and have satellite

58

February 2020

TV. In the food department, at the hospitals, we give our patients a menu, and they can select what they would like to eat while they stay with us. To maintain our high standards, all the food that is served to the patients is prepared by a hotel. Our primary inpatient hospital is at the Blue Cross Hospital which is where I am based. At the St. George’s Hospital, we have our doctor’s offices and daycare departments. We also have specific departments there, like Radiology. Lastly, located at St. George’s, is the Friends’ Hospice, which offers palliative care in a dedicated wing. WHAT IS THE BEST AND WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? It has been humbling to be involved with a project from the start and see it come to fruition. This is what has happened with the new Cath Lab. It began as an idea and then developed through until its opening in November last year. To see it today in full operation and most importantly helping people is extremely rewarding. It will save many lives in Paphos, and I am proud to have been part of the process. To see a patient recover from a severe episode and to witness their continual improvement due to the care we offer, is most certainly the best part of my job. We are a close team at both hospitals, and a patient’s full recovery is always our aim. The worst, is when a patient unfortunately passes away. That despite our best efforts, we are unable to save them. It affects us all deeply and is something neither I nor my team ever gets used to. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? The most important thing I do on a Sunday is to spend time relaxing with my family. I am also the Vice President of “Yes to Life” which is about drugs awareness and making young people understand the dangers of drugs. We do this by speaking at local schools. I am also the General Secretary of the Pafiakos volleyball team. We are first in the Men’s league, and the Women’s team is third, so we are doing well. Every week we travel somewhere for a stadium match.

possible. Previously to our centre opening, this facility was not available to the people of Paphos as the nearest clinic is in Limassol. The European and American medical guidelines always recommend that in the event of a severe heart issue, a patient should be treated within one hour. Depending on the location in Paphos, this was not always a possibility. After a one-million-euro investment and two years planning, the centre was opened last November at the Blue Cross Hospital, by the Minister of Health, Mr Constantinos Ioannou. The Ministry of Health has promised us the full support of the government. Our future aim is to achieve cooperation between government hospitals and the private sector. All for the better health of all citizens. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GOING TO A CATH LAB QUICKLY? In acute coronary syndromes, the time lost until treatment can equate to cardiac tissue loss. Before we opened, our patients would suffer a significant delay until treatment, as immediate care was not available. Our centre can offer Primary and scheduled PCIs (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention), which is a non-surgical procedure which uses a catheter to place a stent to open up the blood vessels in the heart. We are also able to do permanent and temporary pacemaker implantations and ICD implantations (a device placed under the skin to monitor the heart). Our centre has the latest equipment for the functional assessment of the coronary arteries (to see inside the arteries). Our new versions of Volcano Sync Vision technology are used for intracoronary ultrasounds and fractional flow reserve, and it is the first time this brand-new equipment has been used in Europe.

MEET DR. CONSTANTINOS ANDREOU Medical Director, STGBC Paphos Interventional Cardiology Centre

Dr Constantinos Andreou was born and raised in Paphos. He comes from a medical family as his father is also a cardiologist. He studied and did his residency at the University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis in Greece. He went on to study at the University of Athens, where he specialised in congenital adult heart disease. He later went on to change direction and focused his studies on interventional cardiology, as he felt it was more active and rewarding. He finished his studies at the LUMC Centre in Leiden in The Netherlands, where he did his first year on a scholarship granted by the Greek Association of Cardiology. Upon the completion of his studies, he returned to Cyprus and worked at Limassol General Hospital in the interventional cardiology department, before starting at the new centre last year. He lives in Central Paphos with his wife and two children. WHAT IS THE STGBC PAPHOS INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY CENTRE? In short, the centre is a Cath Lab; a facility that has diagnostic imaging equipment which can see all the arteries and chambers of the heart. It can treat any stenosis or abnormality. It is to treat patients with acute cardio problems such as a heart attack or dangerous rhythms as soon as

If a cardio patient is treated quickly, their recovery is much quicker, and the damage to the heart is much less. We can begin a procedure within 10 minutes. A delay causes complications such as dangerous arrhythmias and even death. If we can do the operation quickly, this reduces the risk of death.

“IT IS TO TREAT PATIENTS WITH ACUTE CARDIO PROBLEMS SUCH AS A HEART ATTACK OR DANGEROUS RHYTHMS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 59

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“…A PATIENT SHOULD BE TREATED WITHIN ONE HOUR.” SO, FOR PATIENTS, THIS MEANS? In the event of a heart attack, we have to find the source of the problem as quickly as possible. The ultrasound equipment helps us to see the inner vessels and schedule a procedure to arrange an implant that will save the patient’s life. We can quickly ascertain if there is ‘narrowing’ or not, and if it is significant. This determines if the patient requires a stent or not. Time is of the essence here. For example, we recently had a patient who was in the Cath Lab within 30 minutes of his first call. This massively improved his chances of survival. My team at the centre and I are on call 24 hours a day and can be here in minutes. After June, with the second stage of GESY in action, we are delighted that all patients under the scheme will have the opportunity to have access to the Lab. At the moment, we are busy with referrals from private hospitals in Paphos and cardiologists from the General Hospital. WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOCTOR? My father was a cardiologist, and I grew up in a medical environment. As a child, I saw my father and his colleagues saving lives, and I knew then that I wanted to dedicate my life to following their example. WHAT IS THE BEST HEART HEALTH ADVICE YOU CAN OFFER? If a patient has a history of heart problems, they should always visit their cardiologist regularly for check-ups. They should always follow the advice given by their doctor. All patients should reduce their risk factor of heart problems by following a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise. Patients should not smoke and follow a healthy diet. Remember, if a doctor recommends a particular drug, you should take it. Doctors have a scientific background and know the best medications for your symptoms.

60

February 2020

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS AT THE CENTRE? We aim to develop the Cath Lab further by offering the best facilities, equipment and staff in Paphos. We have a dedicated team here, including an old colleague of mine from Athens who I used to work with at the Red Cross Hospital. He is our Head Nurse, Dionysios Gatzopoulos, who relocated to Paphos to take up his position. He has worked in this field for 23 years and brings a wealth of experience to assist me with procedures. We are also planning to do operations that other medical centres do not offer on the Island. We will do this by flying doctors in from Greece and The Netherlands. Our intention is to do Chronic Total Occlusions with the cooperation of expert cardiologists from these countries. This means we are bringing the latest medical care to our patients in Paphos. Another area we aim to expand is the Arrhythmic Department. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME AWAY FROM THE HOSPITAL? I enjoy spending time with my family and my close friends. Every day I go to the gym before I start work. I also enjoy travelling but I usually combine it with a medical conference. Last year I went to Turin in Italy and attended a conference on CTOs. The year before I went to Aalst in Belgium and went on a Rotablation course. Attending international conferences keeps me up to date with all the latest cardio medical advances which, will ultimately help my patients.

WE OFTEN GET BETTER DEALS MEET ZOE LEE CENTURY TRAVEL

Born and bred in Brisbane, Australia, Zoe has lived in Cyprus for the past 16 years. She has spent nearly half of this time employed as a Travel Consultant with Century Travel. In total, she has worked for approximately 22 years in the travel industry, in various positions and countries, and confirmed that “selling a cruise is most definitely the most enjoyable part” of her job.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY?

Camping on the exotic beaches of Australia & snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef!

A trip to Cuba, so I can experience the roots of Cuban salsa dancing!

WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR TRAVELLING VIA AIR?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION IN CYPRUS FOR A SHORT BREAK?

Don’t drink alcohol, especially on long-haul flights. You will only feel ten times worse on arrival. WHAT AND WHEN WAS THE BEST HOLIDAY YOU EVER HAD? A tough question. I love all holidays and appreciate the uniqueness of each destination. If I had to categorise, I would say, for a European city break, Krakow in Poland. For a non-European city break, it has got to be New York. One of the unique countries I have visited is Japan, and a place I would return to again and again is Singapore.

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

START 2020 AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON Chakra Meditation with the Power of Positive Affirmations - Part 2 -

Meet Roxana Tismanaru, Yoga o’clock Roxana is an expert in her field and specialises in providing yoga and meditation classes, aromatherapy and ayurvedic consultations, health and wellness workshops, and private coaching for improving your well-being. Every practice is based around creating inner selfawareness and self-discovery. Alongside the role of our chakras, our thoughts are integral in creating our personal reality. By regularly practising ‘Chakra Balancing with the Power of Positive Affirmations’, we can achieve astonishing results. Follow the guided meditation below. You may be able to relate to some, more than others.

In December’s edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, we spoke to yoga therapist, Roxana Tismanaru at Yoga o’clock, to find out about Chakra Meditation and the Power of Positive Affirmations. We covered meditation guidance and affirmations relating to the Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra and the Solar Plexus Chakra. This month, we delve a little deeper to cover

4. HEART CHAKRA (Anahata): Love The Heart Chakra is located in the centre of the chest. It helps you to achieve compassion and friendliness, and healthy relationships / interactions with others. It honours the heart and emotions. When imbalanced, we may experience ‘over-loving’ to the extent of suffocation, jealousy, feelings of abandonment, anger, bitterness or loneliness. Reset your mind, forgive the past, let go and accept. Love yourself and love the journey. Love life!

the Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown Chakras. There are seven main chakras along the spine, although, it has been said, there could be as many as 114 chakras all over the body. They allow the free flow of energy into and out of the human body. Chakra Healing is connected to the physical body, the mind and the emotional well-being of a person.

Healing the Heart Chakra: Place your palms on your chest, close to the heart, and imagine a healing emerald green light glowing in your chest. Smile and start to Feel the following Affirmations:

“I deeply, and completely, love and accept myself. I forgive myself.” “I am open to love and kindness. I am loved and I am respected.” “I nurture my inner child. I live in balance, in a state of grace and gratefulness.” “I am connected with other human beings.” “I am grateful for the challenges that help me transform and open up to love and trust.”

64

February 2020

5. THROAT CHAKRA (Vishuddha): Communication & Self-Expression The Throat Chakra is located in the vocal cords in the throat. It governs communication, expression and creativity. A person who feels they cannot, or do not know how to express their truth, may have a wounded Throat Chakra.

Healing the Throat Chakra: Touch your throat and imagine it filling up with a vivid blue light, filling up with your truths, opinions or any other blocked expressions. Try to use your voice as much as possible during this meditation, whether it is reading the affirmations out loud or humming a quick tune to get your vocal chords vibrating. Breathe it out until there is no longer a blockage and repeat:

““I am open, clear and honest in my communication. I have integrity.” “I have a right to speak my truth. I live an authentic life.” “I communicate my feelings with ease.” “I have a strong will that helps me resolve my challenges.” “I nourish my spirit through creativity.”

6. THIRD EYE CHAKRA (Ajna): Intuition & Wisdom The Third Eye Chakra is located in the centre of the forehead, a little above the eyebrows. It honours and governs our psychic and intuitive abilities, or, sixth sense. When wounded, we experience disconnect from our inner wisdom and its power to guide us in life. It represents intelligence and observation and can improve our ability to think for ourselves.

Healing the Third Eye Chakra: Focus on the Power of the following Affirmations, whilst visualising an intense, indigo light, in the centre of your forehead. Breathe in, breathe out, focus on and repeat the following:

“I am in touch with my inner guidance. I listen to my deepest wisdom.” “I nurture my spirit and trust my intuition. My life moves effortlessly.” “I forgive the past and learn what was there for me to learn.” “I am grateful for the goodness in my life.” “I am open to inspiration and ideas.”

7. CROWN CHAKRA (Sahasrara): Transcendence The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and governs your connection to your higher self, whilst being at one with the world. If your awareness of some sort of inner spirituality is not clear, or you seem to lack focus or direction in life, open your Crown Chakra and start this journey as soon as possible.

Healing the Crown Chakra: To heal the Crown Chakra, read these affirmations while focusing on the spot at the top of your head. Imagine a white or purple light connecting you, to that, which is outside of you. It may be helpful to rest your hands or place them on the top of your head. This will assist you to direct the energy to the focus area.

“I am part of the Divine.” “I seek to understand and learn from my life experiences.” “I am connected and listen to the wisdom of the universe.” “I am one with the universe. I cannot detach from it, as it cannot detach from me.” “I cherish my spirit. I am open to divine wisdom.” 65

HAIR & BEAUTY IN STYLE

WINTER BEAUTY TIPS BY HEAD THERAPIST ANNABELLE HOTEL This month we are delighted to gain the inside beauty knowledge of the Head Therapist, Marietta Tzorri, at the Well-Being Spa, at the Annabelle Hotel in Paphos. The Well-Being Spa is located on the top floor of the Annabelle Hotel. It has a large beauty salon, a fantastic indoor pool with probably the best view in Paphos, a gym and further facilities. Marietta works in the Spa, which is open to nonresidents for beauty treatments and offers a variety of membership options.

TOP 5 WINTER BEAUTY TIPS The first signs of winter are here, which can cause the skin to look dull, dry and lifeless. Below, are the best tips to keep your skin in peak condition throughout the winter months:

1. DRY BRUSHING - HELPS TO REGENERATE THE SKIN.

Start with upward brushing movements, from your feet working up the body, always aiming towards the heart. This unique treatment will help to remove dead cells and improve blood circulation, which in turn helps cellulite reduction and skin firming. It is also a great way to prepare your skin for your favourite body lotion.

2. FACIAL SCRUB - REFINES AND IMPROVES THE SKIN.

Scrub at least once a week. This will fight against dull skin and allow your products to be absorbed in the deeper layers of the epidermis, giving you better results when applying cosmetics on top.

3. SERUM-SKIN BOOSTER - DEALS WITH ISSUES.

The first step in selecting your ideal serum is to concentrate on the desired result you want to achieve. It could be for anti-pigmentation or anti-ageing. You can also use pure collagen as your daily serum, to protect and maintain the body’s collagen production. Start by applying your serums on clean skin before applying moisturiser, to allow faster penetration into the second layer of the skin. Remember, serum first, then moisturiser.

66

February 2020

4. MOISTURISER - HYDRATES THE SKIN.

Heat a small amount in the palms of your hands and apply by pressing onto the skin in two movements, one on the cheeks and one simultaneously on the forehead and chin. The remaining amount should be massaged in circular motions until it is all absorbed.

5. SPF-UV BARRIER - PROTECTS THE SKIN.

SPF is one of the essential beauty products, especially in Cyprus. Apply your SPF throughout winter to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which could cause pigmentation or premature ageing.

BONUS TIP!

After washing your face in the morning and evening, splash your skin with cold water for a healthy glow. Most important of all, keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water. Every beauty expert says this, so make yourself do this for beautiful skin.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

ROCKING THE COMMUNITY MEET AGAPIOS GEORGIOU General Manager, ROCK FM

Agapios Georgiou was born and raised in Paphos. Only his military service, work and studies have ever taken him away from his home town. His career in radio started at a very young age in 1992, when he worked at a local Paphos radio station which was run by one of his teachers. He did a radio show from 6 - 8 pm with his friend Christos. As Agapios says, “we did it together for fun”. Those were the days before the Internet, and the studio was a social setting, regularly packed with their friends. After his military service, he went to Greece to study as a Sound Engineer. Today he lives in Paphos with his wife and two children.

70

February 2020

HOW DID YOU INITIALLY GET INTO RADIO? When I was at school, I worked for one of my teachers at a local radio station. I loved it right from the start and realised at an early age that my future lay in broadcasting. When I went to Thessaloniki to study, I quickly began to work for another radio station called Aristera FM. I presented a show which played music using different types of vinyl. We also did local interviews with bands and promoted Thessaloniki, as in 1997, the city was the Cultural Capital of Europe. Throughout my degree, I worked for this station and helped set it up primarily from a sound point of view. We created a great team whose main aim was to present the local vibe. I was delighted that this community continued to flourish even after I had left. Our main objective was to give a voice to the young students. In that age of no Internet and no mobiles, the radio was all the more important. It was the social media platform of the day. Also, during that time, I worked for ERT3 which is a nationwide Greek Radio and TV station. I worked in sound engineering as part of my degree. After this, I returned to Paphos and worked for Radio Paphos, presenting a show with a friend called ‘Crazy Cows’. It was in Greek and made fun of everyday life. YOU WORKED IN THE UK - WHAT DID THIS INVOLVE? After returning to Paphos for one year, I then decided that I needed to do more specific studies in the UK. I did a course which covered audio, video, print and online production in Chichester. I specialised in video production and was honoured, during that time, to be included in a video archive

with some of my work. My final months in the UK were spent working for the outside broadcasting team at BBC Radio 5 as a sound engineer. I then returned to Cyprus, where I worked for Antenna as a sound engineer in Nicosia. I worked for a 24-hour radio station and was involved in production and studio management, which was a huge responsibility for me. During that time in 2001, I also researched into creating a radio station which would offer something completely different.

“MY FINAL MONTHS IN THE UK WERE SPENT WORKING FOR … BBC RADIO 5 AS A SOUND ENGINEER.”

“MY CHIEF PLEASURE IS SPENDING TIME WITH MY FAMILY.”

HOW DID YOU START ROCK FM? I teamed up with my business partner, Philippos Sophocleous. We have known each other since high school, and both had the same vision to create something new together. We had both seen a lot of British citizens moving to Paphos, and we had a good knowledge of this community. We started Rock FM in 2002 in the English language, as we believed that there was a demand for this type of radio. Since then, we have never looked back. Right from the start, the whole idea was to be a community radio which is why we are involved today in the promotion of so many charity events. We try to help in any way that we can. Before Rock FM there was nothing like it in English, and we were also selling advertising to the English-speaking market. Back then, there were two magazines in English but nothing else for both the Cypriot and British nationalities. I used to do a programme which ran from 10 until noon. Some of today’s team have been with us since the very start; like Paul Harris, who still does our weekend show. We also used to work with a Russian colleague who had the biggest

“LETTING OUR LISTENERS KNOW ABOUT AN EVENT WILL DRAMATICALLY INCREASE ATTENDANCE.” selection of CDs and types of vinyl in the world! TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM AT ROCK FM. We are very fortunate in the sense that we have a very professional team at Rock FM. I would like to say a big thank you to all who have been involved over the years. We try our best to promote everyone in our own way, and we like to invest in our team. Originally, we broadcasted in Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca and Polis. After 2013 this changed to cover

“…WE HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK.” 72

February 2020

Limassol, Paphos and the west coast as well. We have been in operation for 17 years and we are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. We never stop. Our listeners are primarily British expatriates who live here permanently. In 2017 we were delighted to be the No 1 nomination for the most listened to radio station in Cyprus. WHY IS COMMUNITY AND CHARITY SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? Because the community is really what matters and we have to support it. That is why we are always promoting charity events. We also arrange our own charity fundraisers. Back in 2014 we took a double-decker bus around Paphos and collected food and clothes for the charity, Solidarity. This was to help people in need. We also did the same in Larnaca with a food bank. At our annual Rock FM Christmas party,

“WE TRY OUR BEST TO PROMOTE EVERYONE IN OUR OWN WAY, AND WE LIKE TO INVEST IN OUR TEAM.”

73

we always like to nominate a charity. Back in 2010, we did a 24-hour show which raised a lot of money so that the children’s ward in Paphos General Hospital could be refurbished. Over the years, we have held many events in Paphos. We were the first to hold World Music Day and we were involved in the first Beer Festival in Cyprus. We also used to have a vast trailer which we would take around Paphos as a mobile disco to raise money for charity. Above all, it is the local charitable events that we have promoted that have had the most significant amounts raised. Letting our listeners know about an event will dramatically increase attendance. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? To continue to be a healthy business and be here to support the local community. We always need to make changes and bring in new ideas. We are having a competition this year whereby we will offer two lucky listeners the chance to win tickets to watch Queen, live in concert in Europe. The prize will include flights, accommodation and tickets to see Queen. Competitions are a theme we are carrying forward from last year, when in December we held three games with the main prizes being 500 euros for each one. This year we are looking forward to creating events with other media in Cyprus. These will include working with Cyprus in Style magazine in developing local business networking events, so that local businesses can connect. Also working in collaboration with other media, we want to offer a complete advertising and marketing package to local businesses.

“THIS YEAR WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO CREATING EVENTS WITH OTHER MEDIA IN CYPRUS.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME? My chief pleasure is spending time with my family. We enjoy visiting Kathikas and Polis. When I am not listening to the radio, I enjoy listening to funk, jazz and soul music.

“… THE COMMUNITY IS REALLY WHAT MATTERS AND WE HAVE TO SUPPORT IT.” 74

MEET LOUIS YIANNAPIS Outsider Art Studio, Nicosia

Louis Yiannapis is a Cypriot artist based in Nicosia. He works from his own art studio, ‘Outsider’s Art Studio’, which is open to the public and displays a wide range of his own eccentric and surreal paintings. He is a playful character with strong messages conveyed in each of his paintings. His work is often considered to be controversial while at the same time, it is incredibly thought-provoking and full of deep emotion. Yiannapis’ work is popular with Cypriot, Greek and international collectors. From 1992 to 1995, Yiannapis studied icon painting at the Emmanuel Panselinos School of Byzantine Icon Painting. In 2009, he joined and still is a member of the CO.BR.A Artistic movement, from which, “The founders came from … the Flemish group Reflex, the Danish Høst and the Belgian ‘Revolutionary Surrealist Group,’ three movements in opposition to the dictates of Geometric Abstraction and Socialist Realism.”.

ART THERAPY FOR THE MIND AND SOUL Yiannapis works with many leading art dealers, including, K.Kalai and the auctioneers, S. Kalais, for selling paintings to art collectors throughout Europe. He has also been a member of the New York Outsider Artist team, following the personal recommendation of the founder, Loui Vittonet, since November 2011. Some children have been severely mistreated and removed from their family environments. Yiannapis has also worked with children suffering

daily with severe Schizophrenia and Depression. “It is not easy working amongst the doctors and nurses, especially when I do not agree with their methods of pacifying them, to maintain control of these already maltreated children,” Yiannapis stated. The children’s strong influence on Yiannapis’ own art style is clearly visible to the naked eye. Yiannapis has a unique, inimitable style of painting which uses explosive colours to communicate direct messages to the world. A selection of his paintings are also available for sale at Chakra Fine Art Gallery in Paphos.

CULTURAL SPACE

TECHNOPOLIS 20

AN OPEN SPACE OF CULTURE, ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE

Technopolis 20 is a trendy venue located in the Pano Paphos area, not too far from the law courts. The cultural centre was launched in 2014 by Markella Neocleous and Marina Symeonidou who have known each other since Kindergarten. They are two friends who both shared the same vision, which was to create an open space of culture, accessible to all. Their primary mission is to “promote classical and contemporary culture, to support Cypriot artists and to cultivate artistic culture further. The building itself is imposing. Technopolis is housed in a preserved and renovated neoclassical mansion which was built in 1920. The building offers a variety of spaces which can be used together or individually for an event. The room at the centre of the building is the main stage venue for performances. This space has witnessed mainly musical concerts, literature events, lectures and theatrical productions. There is a larger studio which is suitable for screenings and workshops, and further exhibition and seminar rooms. Very often these rooms have been used for excellent art exhibitions. During the summer months, Technopolis 20 has a big garden where it continues its music concerts and open-air film screenings. Since opening, they have held over five hundred events and collaborated with numerous artists from both Cyprus and abroad. The last five years have been focused on all kinds of art, mainly musical concerts (classical, jazz, ethnic, traditional and contemporary), film screenings, art exhibitions, theatre and art performances, book presentations, family events, workshops, seminars, corporate events and much more. Going forward into 2020, Technopolis looks forward to their many events which will take place and have made plans to extend their sponsorship programme, which means that its artistic programme can be enriched and further developed.
