Sea & Style” is the improbable association of the shock of crashing waves and the sophistication of fashion. Like the ocean, fashion is a tonic with strong and powerful tides. This common thread will take you to the islands where this issue will provide you with the best addresses. On granite monuments, Blush caught up with the high-altitude swimming icons, Camille Lacourt and Florent Manaudou. We capture - but never imprison – on film these champions who have won almost everything. Fashion is consumed a little too fast these days for us to be on board with following it all the time. Peter Lindbergh understands this only too well; we take a look at the man who revolutionised fashion photography. In Venice Beach, Blush wends its way among women of influence such as Jennifer Lawrence, a phenomenal star who amazes everyone by her outspokenness. We interview this rebel who dreams of lagoons and palm trees between locations. They talk of nothing but her; Gigi Hadid has made her curves and her azure gaze her trademark. We shine the spotlight on the top, top model of the moment. After a pit stop at Courchevel, we head back to the capital of fashion, Paris, where the elite meet up at La Réserve and sit down to meals by Chef Eric Frechon. And from film premieres to exhibitions, Blush sidesteps the moroseness of news headlines. We play with words without forgetting frivolity, lightness, imagination, dreams, pleasure, insolence; life.”

rom Paris to L.A. via Miami, Blush is moving into new lands of luxury. In this “Sea & Style” number, we have had the honour of working with Olympic swimming champion Florent Manaudou and world swimming champion Camille Lacourt, with whom we shot two exclusive series in Saint-Tropez. On the other side of the Atlantic you will find the stars making the headlines: Jennifer Lawrence, the most bankable actress of the silver screen, tells us all about her incredible experiences on X-Men and about her relationship with fame. Interview p54. When it comes to fine jewellery, the House of Orlov unveils its exceptional pieces, delightfully displayed in a marine photo shoot. This is the kind of spread that makes our magazine so exclusive – and we are developing our know-how through bespoke supplements dedicated to luxury brands such as The Gate Collection Magazine by Blush and HDP by Blush, the Hôtel de Paris St Tropez’s magazine. And coming soon, the Clinic Lemanic in Lausanne with whom we are designing a new Swiss title. See you at Baselworld!

Frederique Constant

New Classics Automatic Collection

“Affordable luxury” and “Live your passion!”. With this motto in mind, Swiss Watch Manufacturer Frederique Constant introduces two new Classics Automatic watches. If classical and traditional are the two adjectives which determine the best of the Frederique Constant watches, the design of this new Classics Automatic Collection will not disappoint. Elegance of the shape, timelessness of the style, harmony of the curve, everything contributes to making these timepieces a classic with a modern twist. frederiqueconstant.com

Patravi TravelTec II by Carl F. Bucherer

The Perfect Watch for the Man on the Move

The Patravi TravelTec II by Carl F. Bucherer was made for the road warrior. This striking rose gold watch simultaneously displays three time zones of choice. At the push of a button, the time zone can be rapidly adjusted, ensuring punctuality in any hemisphere. Warm rose gold glows in a de luxe high-contrast effect, set against the deep black DLCcoated titanium in the Patravi TravelTec II. The back of the timepiece features an engraving that will delight the wearer, displaying 24 time zones centered on Carl F. Bucherer’s own headquarters of Lucerne. Function and fashion meet in the Patravi TravelTec II, making it a watch fit for an international traveler at work or at play. carl-f-bucherer.com

Rudis Sylva

New RS 16 Harmonious Oscillator

When the Harmonious Oscillator was unveiled at Baselworld 2009, there were watchmakers present who thought this invention to be important in the history of timekeeping. The reason is clear: the Harmonious Oscillator represents a horological revolution. In permanent opposition, its toothed balance wheels instantly minimise the effects of gravity when the watch is in the vertical position. The wheels are interlinked, ensuring a more stable amplitude for higher precision. The distinctive design of the new RS 16 with its high-domed sapphire crystal is by star watch designer Eric Giroud. Rudis Sylva is proud to be one of very few independent brands to have designed, manufactured, tested, and patented an entire complicated movement. rudissylva.com

Louis Moinet’s “Memoris Red Eclipse” Memoris Red Eclipse has now become Louis Moinet’s anthology timepiece, celebrating the bicentenary of the invention of the chronograph – a very limited edition of 12 fully hand-engraved watches. It was unveiled at an event organised by Louis Moinet at the Neuchâtel Observatory to observe the eclipse of the moon on September 16. This top prestige version features a bespoke case, is entirely hand-engraved and depicts the theme of the lunar eclipse. All the movement’s finishes are also hand-crafted using authentic, traditional Fine Watchmaking processes – a discipline to which Ateliers Moinet now officially belongs, as per the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie’s latest White Paper, published on June 22. The bevelling brings the mechanism to life on a mysterious starry background. This is crafted using a traditional rose engine – a tool which, despite being 200 years old, has just found a new application, thanks to Memoris. The unique process creates a spectacular effect that makes the stars twinkle in myriad ways, depending on the angle at which they are viewed. louismoinet.com

Zenith and Land Rover Bar Two legends share a test for challenges After the announcement of the exceptional long-term association between Zenith and Land Rover and with appropriately beautiful timing, Land Rover BAR has taken the opportunity of the first ever America’s Cup racing in Asia to present watchmaker Zenith as Official Timing Partner. An important new collaboration to accentuate the strength and significance of a global partnership that is fully geared up to go the distance. Aldo Magada, President and CEO of Zenith and Ben Ainslie, Skipper and Team Principal of Land Rover BAR unveiled the news at a press conference in Fukuoka, the venue for the final racing in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series. Ben Ainslie and the sailing team will all become global brand ambassadors, styling the El Primero Sport model. Discover the LAND ROVER BAR sailing team Team www.landroverbar.com/en/sailing-team.html

Lizzy Jagger, Redken’s

new rebel muse

A model, an actress and a producer, Elizabeth Scarlett Jagger knows who she gets her character from. The oldest daughter of the star model of the 1970s, Jerry Hall, and the lead singer with the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Lizzy boasts an unusual and terribly rock ‘n’ roll beauty, just like Redken, for whom she is the new face. With her long, ruby-coloured hair and full lips, Lizzy is known for her professionalism – along with a strong character and a few minor scandals such as a very sexy video made without her knowledge and a brawl during her sister, Georgia May’s 18th birthday party in London. Oh well, “Papa was a Rolling Stone”!

Rolling back the years

at the Hôtel des Cures Marines in Trouville “An Elixir of Youth”, the flagship programme at the Cures Marines de Trouville, draws on the virtuous circle of perpetual renewal. After an in-depth assessment, a detox programme is created comprising a diet focusing on detoxification and antioxidants, oxygenation through sporting activities and, last but not least, “respirology” – a concept of conscious breathing connecting to the four elements (earth, wind, fire and water). Body and cell activity is regenerated through bespoke thermal treatments and high-tech Skin Perfusion protocols from Filorga. Regenerated, revitalised deep down, guests are also taught how to take care of themselves by applying a holistic approach. The cherry on the cake? The sublime decoration from Jean-Philippe Nuel and a cuisine inspired by the sea from David Drans who spent five years working alongside Alain Ducasse and who sources most of his products locally. Cindy Chao, the art jewel Biennale des Antiquaires 2016

Known for its artistic interpretations as well as the intricate and refined craftsmanship that brings its stunning creations to life, CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel has garnered the attention of top jewellery collectors and connoisseurs from around the world. The brand’s prestigious Black Label Masterpiece series is particularly exceptional, transcending the boundaries of traditional design for high-class jewellery. Chao seeks only the rarest gemstones to express the exceptional relationship between nature and art while creating museum-calibre pieces. One medium Chao has become known for is titanium, a strong metal that is five times more time consuming to craft than gold, but is used because it is one of the lightest metals. One of the highlights unveiled at the Biennale is the Winter Leaves necklace from the Four Seasons Collection, a reinterpretation of the brand’s first auctioned art jewel back in 2007. A constellation of 250-carats, nearly 6,000 oval-cut diamonds, all falling within the DEF colours and VVS clarity criteria.

PARIS

Happy birthday Gemmyo!

To mark its fifth anniversary, this young jewellery house has chosen to reinterpret one of its iconic pieces and develop it into a collection. The Ariane Pavée ring, better known as the “crown” on the little pink cat that is the brand’s muse, now forms part of an extremely precious 14-piece collection - from the famous Ariane Pavée ring, to Creole earrings with the labyrinth motif, to a studded cuff … All the pieces have the thread motif as their theme. The Ariane So Pavée is restrained and studded with diamonds while the insane Ariane So Crazy is a unique piece in wild and whacky colours - it is studded with vivid pink spinels, Padparadscha sapphires and pink parma sapphires, it shrieks its individuality with the “Ariadne wink” which here takes the form of a pear-shaped tanzanite and a round tsavorite. The items are available on the website www.gemmyo.com and directly from the Gemmyo showroom, 21 rue de Seine in Paris.

COPENHAGEN Shamballa Jewels Ultimate Protection necklace When is a necklace more than a necklace? When it’s the Ultimate Protection necklace from Shamballa. The piece is steeped in the imagery and story-telling that are Shamballa’s trademarks. It features a trio of beautifully crafted and delightfully delicate pendants designed to protect the wearer’s mind, body and soul from negative forces through a message of compassion, wisdom and fearlessness. The Kartika chopper deals swiftly with ignorance, the Laughing Skull Phurpa symbolises the cup of wisdom and the Tibetan Phurpa dagger overcomes obstacles. As with all the brand’s designs, the necklace includes the Star of Shamballa. Considered one of the most sacred and powerful Tibetan symbols, it is believed to bring compassion and protect the wearer from all evil. shamballajewels.com

KANAGAWA

Japanese inspiration for the house of Garaude Paris

LOS ANGELES Vanessa Hudgens & Maria Lucia Hohan

Vanessa Hudgens wore a Maria Lucia Hohan gown to the last Creative Arts Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. Maria Lucia Hohan has become the starlet’s go-to designer, with her designs gracing Hollywood A-listers at major award shows, premieres and red carpet events. Known for her ethereal, elaborately draped gowns and flirty cocktail dresses, Maria Lucia Hohan’s signature aesthetic lies in her delicate pastel hues and colours on variations of silk textures, sheer mousseline, sand washed satin, creamy velvet and crisp taffeta. She describes her collections as chic but girly. Her pieces are created to enhance the feminine silhouette and make a woman feel happy and fabulous. mlh-shop.com

34

In a tribute to the artist Hokusai, the Kanagawa collection follows the line of the Great Wave of the same name. It is made of titanium, a revolutionary material in the world of jewellery-making, which gives the pieces a real lightness. Extremely complex to work with because of specifics of melting titanium, there are 14 pairs of unique Creole earrings from black to fuchsia, all signed and numbered, which helps you appreciate the various nuances of this avant-garde metal, accented with diamonds. The Creoles are also available as brooches, pendants and rings and capture an infinite motion which whisks you away to another world off the Japanese coast. garaude.com

You are Wella’s International Artistic Ambassador, you set up the Bar à Chignon Minute, you created your own organic haircare range and botanical colouring range, “Bio by Biot”, you have a salon on Paris’s Left Bank in St Germain, L’Atelier BioT and now one on the Right Bank, L’Apartment Trandline. Christophe-Nicolas Biot, do you ever stop? After being artistic director of the Vog group, I decided to take my career in a new direction in 2009 and to sign an international artistic contract with Wella. Thanks to a chance meeting, I acquired

py, because in a way I think I’m a major player in the business today. We go forward by coming up with ideas. So not everything I come up with necessarily has an audience, but in general it does. It’s not always the same audience and that’s what is interesting. Actually, that’s what I like, because I think I have a chameleon personality.

Marianne Gray’s salon, on the Left Bank where I set myself up in 2010. I opened the Maison de Coiffure, in the heart of St Germain des Prés, then the Bar à Chignon Minute which just took off.

metaphors like that in life. Besides comfort and appearance, the suit gives you a hard shell, a kind of personality too. And I like this idea of metaphorical clothing. With all these concepts, the idea is to appeal to clients with different tastes: some are looking for botanics, others for glamour, sometimes they want the fun side of St Germain, in a way only St Germain knows how to do, in a way the 8th arrondissement can never quite manage.

Everyone has copied your concept … As Coco Chanel said: “Take my ideas, I’ll have others.” This is so true! Imitation is the best form of flattery so in the end, I’m very hap-

People say you are eclectic, what do you say to that? Eclectic, yes, but without compromising on quality. I like to wear a different suit every morning because every day is different and I think that clothes tell a story as well. We see

Which artists inspire you? Jacques Brel and Mick Jagger. Jacques Brel is someone who had a wonderful way with words, a poet, who knew how to speak to people through his poems and songs, while Mick Jagger, with his gestures, his sensuality, his charisma on stage, his animal side speaks to me through his actions. I try to reference this in my shows. Isabelle Huppert, Laetitia Casta, Emmanuelle Seigner, Isabelle Adjani, Juliette Binoche… Many celebrities entrust their appearance to you. Who has made the biggest impression? The first woman I met in Paris 14 years ago, who really helped me and gave me a boost, is Emmanuelle Seigner. I was unknown, I came here from Mulhouse - can you imagine?! I was lucky enough to go to a theatre to give some advice, and made friends. Emmanuelle began to trust her hair to me, and suddenly an article appeared in Elle magazine! In hindsight, I can see the importance this might have had for my career. Other projects and other meetings followed, like Eva Herzigova or Isabelle Huppert, who I look after in the studio as well as in my salon. What are the expectations of clients at L’Appartement in Rue Pierre Charron and those at the Maison de Coiffure in Saint Germain? The expectations are the same. Whether you are in 500 m² or in 150 m², someone having their hair styled in Saint Germain on the Left Bank will have the same expectations as on the Right Bank. They are

looking for a high level of service, an individual signature and above all a personal service, that is what is most important and that is what makes us stand out. Having said that, no woman goes out with the same hairstyle or the same colour. We are not concerned with trends, like a group that brings out four photos and everyone must leave the salon like that, because they are blonde. I don’t do stereotypes. What does Christophe-Nicolas Biot dream of doing next? Good question! If there is one I thing I dream of, it is of being able to take my time and to have time. Last Sunday was wonderful: I got up, I did not look at my watch, I had no timetable and I walked around Paris, strolled to the Bon Marché. That is a real luxury for me, not to have to follow a fixed programme, not to be tied down to a specific schedule. Dreams are also about projects. I always need to have a project in my head so that I’m moving forward. Until now, I have worked hard without looking back and thinking about what I‘ve achieved. Now, it is starting to build up and suddenly I find myself looking back, and saying ‘Ah yes, I did that, that, that and that’. Before I didn’t really take the time to appreciate it, because one project led into another.

The Tiara Château Hôtel Mont Royal Chantilly is a veritable fortress of wellbeing, just 35 minutes from Paris, offering treatments and luxury in the age-old surroundings of this neoclassical treasure. The prestigious spa is ultra-modern and offers high-class Carita treatments as well as Signature treatments created by Equatoria in the beautiful surroundings of the castle environment. Noblesse oblige, the Royal Rite with Damask Rose treatment begins with a purifying and nourishing scrub of clay, poppy seeds and shea butter, delicately scented with Bulgarian rose, followed by an “enveloping cocoon” of beeswax with essential lavender, cypress, rosemary and rosewood oils, just the thing to nourish dry skin, relax tension and eliminate toxins. Like a waltz in threequarter time, this ritual is extended by a luxurious oriental massage, that leaves skin supple, soft and revitalised.

The Holistic Forest Rite, aimed at harmonising your energies, immerses you in a regenerating bubble for total relaxation. Using bamboo it combines pressure, rolling, sliding and vibrating movements, ending with percussion. It promotes muscle relaxation and drainage of toxins for the ultimate release of tension. The Free Diet

G

etting beach body ready starts early. Sometimes very early. From gluten-free to lactose-free to sugar-free diets, no sacrifice is too grea for those looking to control what they eat. Right or wrong? We take a closer look at the latest trends.

By Quitterie Pasquesoone

From Paris to Los Angeles, one diet follows on from another and they all seem much of a muchness. The latest craze for the stick thin? Avoiding one food or another in the hope of gaining bodily benefits both internal and external. And the list is long: “free” is better or so they say! A few years ago, nutritionists were pointing the finger at starch and fat; down w ith bread, you were better off sticking to vegetables, steamed of course. Nowadays the conversation has moved on and pasta and potatoes are back on the menu, along with fats. Olive oil (or coconut if you want to be snobby), Omega 3s (all hail the capsules of cold sea fish oil) and other oils such as rapeseed are now all the rage. Eating fats is good for you! The current Public Enemy No 1 is sugar – that fake friend who will do wrong by you. And that’s not all – sugar-free but also milk,

44

gluten and meat-free. Exclusion diets, the latest in one-upmanship fashion, have the wind in their sails. So what should we make of these new kinds of diets? Obviously they can be useful just as long as you don’t mix them all up. Because while diets without this or that are perfectly legitimate when prescribed by a doctor or as part of a life philosophy (such as veganism which excludes the use of any animal products either in your diet or lifestyle), their benefits are often taken out of their original context… A “-free” diet helps you lose weight? False. Or in any case that is not what they are desig ned to do. It’s t r ue – sk ipping lactose never reduced cellulite. Going gluten-free means waving goodbye to all starch? False again – not all starch contains gluten, only wheat-based starch. Do you see what we mean? Ignorance sometimes reaches

the level of ridicule, and that’s before we get on to those who believe they are allergic to such or such food group when they are not even intolerant: excess is the rule. It is a sad way to view food – and life! Because little by little we are working towards flavourless cuisine. And while we are at it, meals with no pleasure and no joie de vivre. So beware then of banning everything; don’t forget the pleasure of sitting down to enjoy the traditional little dishes of your region. Because if there is one thing we would be wrong to deprive ourselves of it is those dishes that make up our culinary, cultural wealth – chocolate and walnut brownies one side of the Atlantic and Beef Bourguignon or chocolate éclairs on the other. Guaranteed 100% pure gluten, lactose and animal proteins – but also guaranteed 100% pure pleasure and tradition. And tradition tastes good doesn’t it?

Californian

GT i r l he Parisian woman is a mythical and delicate creature who casually produces a packet of cigarettes from her Chanel handbag. Meanwhile on the other side of the planet, the Californian girl drinks a kale smoothie, her blond hair flying in the wind, her well-toned figure encased in a Versace dress. Two different takes on life, two different takes on elegance.

The chic versus the sexy

Shades of grey versus all the colours of The cigarette versus the healthy lifestyle the rainbow

Paris is all about chic. A deceptively simple chic. While in California, it’s fashionable to be casual - short shorts, Uggs and a casuallystyled bun, with another look for the evening - crop-top, mini-skirt and vertiginous heels in Paris, there is a middle ground of always looking chic without overdoing it. With a slick of lipstick, work wear becomes evening wear. The Parisian wants to look feminine in every nuance and detail. The chic is in the certain je-ne-sais-quoi. The high priestess of Parisian chic is, of course, Coco Chanel. No need to wear a miniskirt to be desirable, there is a hint of the erotic in a slightly too unbuttoned shirt or in a confident and devil-may-care attitude - there is nothing so chic as the beaming smile of Inès de la Fressange. The Californian in turn is more upfront Kim Kardashian is the new poster girl for the uninhibited Californian way of life. She has made a virtue out of what some might have seen as a defect - her buttocks for those who haven’t been keeping up. Check it out for yourself with Jean-Paul Goude’s pictures that “broke the internet”. Why keep that under wraps? Before her, Pamela Anderson was another face of Californian excess. We are no longer in the the je-nesais-quoi territory of the Parisian, this is allout sexy, poured into a Versace minidress and shouting it loud and clear!

It is said that the Parisian is a fashion icon. But from one season to the next, her wardrobe does not seem to change: the trench coat is still in evidence - often it is not even a French brand - to brave the weather in Paris and co-ordinate with the clouds and her cashmere sweaters range in colour from mouse grey to slate grey. The Parisian remains faithful to the classics, but is not very adventurous. The Californian meanwhile does not live in a grey climate, she loves pastels or bright colours - it has to be said that these colours show off her eponymous blonde hair to the best advantage. She matches her manicure to her outfit, knowing that a manicure is rarely limited to one colour. Why choose?

Who wins? We love t he uninhibited att it ude of Californians just as much as the more nuanced approach of the Parisian.

So who wins? The Californian girls who defend the right to show some imagination - even if it does involve pairing Uggs with short shorts in the blazing sun.

The Parisian is constantly complaining that you can no longer smoke just anywhere as you could in the old days … She has tried giving up cigarettes at least 50 times since 2006, but she carries on anyway. It’s a way of life: smoking, red wine and zero sport. The Parisian doesn’t want to be seen to be making an effort: “I put on the first thing I laid my hands on.” The same goes for her hair, her make-up and her figure. The Parisian says she has no beauty secrets, she loves her faults! However, she says she loves Camembert and croissants more than she actually eats them. Like a professional dancer, the Parisian wants us to believe that her innate elegance comes easily. To achieve this, she spends a significant amount of time styling her hair so it looks unstyled and perfecting her natural make-up to look classy without appearing to have made an effort. When it comes to sport, the Parisian will take part, but with the nonchalant approach she is known for - and which is absolutely genuine. After all, there’s no harm in skipping Pilates to go for a drink with friends, is there? The Californian doesn’t mess with her healthy life credo. Her best friend is her blender - if the Parisian says “I’ll have a coffee first,” her Californian counterpart retorts: “I’ll have a kale and spinach smoothie first.” And the day can begin with a yoga session by the ocean - for once, the River Seine plays second fiddle. Who wins ? We want to say the Parisian - even if she cheats a bit.

t might look minimalist, but its philosophy, its methods and the results it produces are the quite the opposite. Ultra-innovative, powerful and reliable, it goes where other devices have never been. It links strength with endurance and power with speed and can help with weight loss in record time. Is it some sort of sporting UFO? Almost certainly. Is it a scientific revolution? No, it’s more than that! The product of German research, fine-tuned, it has electromyostimulation at its very heart. Each muscle group is worked intelligently so that the whole body reacts to the thousandth degree. Working in depth in this way, using opposing currents, the muscles are then stimulated, built up and toned as never before. Originally a sporting device, it has become a real “tool” for body shaping, 20 minutes (one session) is enough to feel results … A sculpted and firmed body, a well-developed and uniform musculature and, as a bonus, competitive and steely morale. Feted as a scientific breakthrough and praised for its innovation, it goes beyond being a simple sports machine … With its high-tech and futuristic design, turning the concept of sports training on its

head, the Miha Bodytec re-writes the rules for the sporting lifestyle.

Machines for modern times A leader in the EMS market (integral electro-stimulation), Miha Bodytec is now breaking new ground and unveiling its full potential. So far 40 countries have been won over, with all Paris at its feet and all manner of sports personalities, like the incredible Usain Bolt and former French sprint champion Christine Aaron who use it to train. Now it can be found at high-class addresses and top-level dedicated centres where we are invited to try it … Highly sporty and personalised. In fact, it is always in an accompanying philosophy that one tries the “Bodytec experience” overseen by coaches specifically trained in its use so you can get the most out of it in complete safety. With precision and minute timing, the body’s movements are guided with perfect synchronicity. A session on the Miha Bodytec is so concentrated that just one is the equivalent of four hours in the gym in terms of pure muscle contraction.

The Miha Bodytec provides the qualitative and modern response that we are looking for. Forget the outdated image of electrodes of bygone years, this is the future. When you see this device, its electroluminescent dashboard allows you to control the periods of contraction and rest - believe us, this is the bang-up-to-date machine that helps you to get in shape.

Ivanova

An international business woman who cares about entrepreneurs and makes their lives easier

A

re you an entrepreneur? A top-manager? Is your business the priority? A lot of work and little time for yourself? Imagine if someone could make your business and your life better, someone with a real understanding of what it’s like to start and run a company? We’ve found such an expert. Valeria Ivanova, founder of vip-pro.ch, is an entrepreneur herself, and she focuses on you as a whole, a business and a person.

So you’ve read tons on ROI, a d d e d v a lu e, i n nov a t io n and best practices … You’re a ssaulted by t housands of consult ing companies and personal coaches who promise to push your business to a new level. But who spares a thought for the bosses? Who cares about their well-being? Valeria, 35, from Geneva, has first-hand experience of the world of entrepreneurship – she has been setting up and running international businesses since 2000. A fter a career in the tourism, luxury and medical care industries in Switzerland and abroad, she came to the conclu sion – obv iou s but difficult to implement – that if the head of the company feels great, then he or she will make sure the business and its employees feel the same way.

52

After coming close to a burnout herself, Valeria decided to do all she could to help entrepreneurs – the current rock stars – often idolized or envied, but just as often overworked and isolated. Her goal since 2014 has been to help entrepreneurs find a balance, so they can remain in top shape both personally and professionally. It is her contribution to those who change our world.

Improve the health We of ten t a l k ab out t he employees’ well-being, but – often as well – we forget to talk about the well-being of the person who started the bu sines s. A nd, a s Va ler ia herself experienced, for an entrepreneur, business comes first, even after several wake-up calls. And yet, our bodies are

the vehicles that produce and supply the energ y to be an entrepreneur. As she puts it: “It’s the base, the platform,” before adding, with a smile: “But why not outsource the maintenance of the vehicle to the pros?” T h a t ’s w h e r e V a l e r i a ’s connections with the Swiss hea lt h i ndu st r y come i n handy. She takes care of your health, adapting the medical services to the demands and constraints of business men and women. Depending on the need or urgency, she secures appointments in Switzerland with the best practitioners. Without having to wait and in the comfort of your home. If more discretion is needed, she can even arrange to close an entire clinic to outside patients. “Replace 24 teeth in 2 sessions instead of usual 10? On a weekend, early in the morning

or late in the evening?” – all of this is possible thanks to Valeria, who works with the best dentists in Geneva. And because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, she insists on regular, thorough and state-ofthe-art check-ups to localize any potential problems, as well as on on-going treatments to improve and sustain your health.

Look after the family “Delegation is Management 101, right? And yet, as managers, we tend to forget about it when it comes to our own lives and family” – explains Valer ia – “ W hen t hink ing ab out my ow n sit u at ion, and that of my friends … I realized you need more than a secretar y or an assistant. You need a team of specialists who have a more strategic

health

vision …” – adding - “A nd discretion, so that the private doesn’t over f low into t he professional, an eruption in some board meeting.” To take the pressure off business owners, she takes care of all family needs, with special emphasis on Swiss professionalism and security. Switzerland is an ideal country to send your loved ones to, in complete peace of mind, so you can focus on your work. For children: top quality private education both in term and holiday time. For partners: the best spas and renowned clinics to relax and rejuvenate.

Invest in win-win “I’m not going to teach anyone to reinvest like A mazon or avoid taxes like Apple … I think

we all know how to do that,” – laughs Valeria - “I’m a specialist i n e t h i c a l i n v e s t m e nt s .” This woman of passion and conv ict ion f avor s w in - w in project s; project s that not only help protect and increase the entrepreneur’s capital, but which also benefit the planet, the city, the culture or another entrepreneur. Investments in contemporary art, in cinema, in green construction or in a new business. “Even by investing in some luxury, for example, a vintage car, my entrepreneurclient is helping preserve a piece of world history.”

Upgrade the office This expert knows from her own experience: “An optimum work environment is key for optimum work results.” She steps in to

help clients better organise their workspace. Whether it is furniture, a relaxation area or a special re-design, nothing is left to chance so that the entrepreneur, and their staff, can be as effective as possible. Cozier offices, more ergonomic chairs, sleep capsules for a power-nap – Valeria thinks of everything. And that includes your budget, thanks to her network of service-providers in Russia who rival the Italians for quality but at a much lower price. The idea is to help companies boost productivity by creating an atmosphere that fosters work and concentration, “ w it hout re sor t i ng to a n additional venture round ”. This is important given that we spend 80% of our lives at work and that “as managers, we need to retain the talent.”

Close to her clients, Valeria Ivanova responds to their needs with precision, which is typically Swiss. And with a deeply human commitment, which is typically Russian. Born in Geneva, she spent 16 years in Moscow and speaks four languages. Business people are her core business and by helping them she also helps develop something even more important: the business of the people. Hers is a unique and exclusive company with deep, humanistic qualities. A real pro.

Jennifer Lawrence A Rebel In Hollywood

56

cinema

She is probably the “hippest” and most “bankable” actress of the moment. She is young, beautiful and an Oscar-winner. She has Hollywood and the world at her feet. Her name is Jennifer Lawrence and not a nano-second goes by without it being mentioned somewhere on the web or in the tabloid press. A star phenomenon who has surprised many by her outspokenness and who refuses to allow herself to be penned in by the prevailing conformism. Blush interviewed this rebel who dreams of lagoons and coconut palms between film shoots. Interviewed in London by Frank Rousseau

You were propelled to worldwide fame through your role as the mutant Mystique in X Men. Tell us a bit about that blue make-up - you certainly didn’t find the colour at Dior for whom you are an ambassador! (Laughs). It now takes three hours to transform me into Mystique. Going to the bathroom is always a problem and remov ing the make-up isn’t necessarily easy simply because the make-up artist sticks loads of things on with really strong glue. It has to last a whole day – 15 or 16 hours – and be sweatresistant! Just to make things better, I’m allergic to all adhesives so it leaves marks! But you just get on with it; I never told anyone! How do you react when you see yourself completely blue? I am usually so tired and so starving when I wake up at two in the morning just to have to go through the whole process that I really couldn’t care less what I looked like! Usually it’s the others who see me like that who react, not me. Perhaps because I forgot what I look like! Sometimes I would look at my assistant and we’d be talking about something really serious and then at some point she would stop the conversation

saying: “I’m sorry I just can’t do this. You really look like a monster!” (Laughs) What’s worrying is that I don’t always realise that! In X Men and also in the Hunger Games saga, you display your leadership skills. I was wondering what kind of a boss you are in real life? I’ve never beaten anyone up! Well …not yet! (Laughs). Now what kind of a boss am I? I think I’ve found the right tone to adopt when someone screws up or does something I don’t like. When a mistake has been made and I have to tell someone off, I usually become really mean and nasty – but in a funny way, not seriously at all. For example, I’m capable of saying: “I’ll skin you alive!” or “Never ask me to wear a ball gown again! I hate it because, thanks to you, I was the most over-dressed girl of the evening!” (Laughs). I can assure you, everyone knows I’m joking – at least I hope they do because if not they must think I’m a living nightmare! (Laughs) If you had a super power, would you use it to change the face of the planet? You know, Mystique was able to transform herself and I don’t

think that power would be enough to change the world unless I could transform myself into a leader or a political figure of international standing! Objectively, I don’t think I would be able to do much. What is for sure is that I dream of a world w it hout Donald Trump! I would add that I’m not authoritative enough to make a good leader. I’m not smart enough either to run the world! (Laughs) In the meantime, you’re very mature for your age … You know, I haven’t been to school since I was 14 years old! So I wasn’t surrounded by people of my own age and that makes you grow up quicker! What is certain is that I’ve had to deal with a lot of stuff in my life; no-one knows what I’ve been through. There is an awful lot about injustice in your films and in real life Jennifer, what do you find particularly unfair right now? A whole load of things! To start w it h, t he dispar it y in wages between men and women. If you have the same responsibility and do the same job I don’t understand why this gap ex i st s. T he pr ice of some products drives me crazy too.

How can I come across a T-shirt for US$150 when shopping in Los Angeles? And when I was buying furniture for my house, I couldn’t believe how much a couch can cost. In the end I bought one at Ikea. I don’t know how long it will last but it was in a fit of anger – a kind of act of rebellion. When I saw the prices I said: “Out of the question, I’m going to Ikea.” On top of that, the couch is great. But yes, this inflation in the price of things really angers me. As a role-model, do you feel you have a special responsibility towards other women? Yes, of course. I feel a bit of pressure because there are so many young women, and also many young men, who go and see my films. I owe it to them to be an example beyond reproach. Now I think it’s very important that women support each other. Women are often harder on each other, they spare them nothing. They talk about everything. Men are only interested in the most futile things!

cinema

In Hunger Games, your character Katniss cries sometimes. Do you often shed tears and if so under what circumstances? I don’t generally cry a lot in life. But it’s difficult because sometimes I would like to be able to cry. It’s always easier to have empathy for others than compassion for yourself; it’s the basic premise of the role of an actor, to understand the situation someone’s in and to have empathy for them. So it’s easier for me to cry about my character than to connect to my own feelings. I find it easier to cry in front of a camera than in real life. If you don’t cry, what do you do to release pressure? You’ll have to ask my therapist that question. (Laughs) I don’t know, different things and, when things are really too sad I do cry, obviously. I don’t hold back my tears. One thing’s for sure; going on holiday far away from Los Angeles, bathing in the ocean, lying out on the sand and resting in a hammock in the shade of palm trees beats everything else for getting rid of toxins! If you knew how much I love idyllic islands. I love those places that allow you to switch off and reconnect with yourself. The idea of hiring a sail boat and heading off for the southern seas has been something I’ve been thinking of for a while actually. During the craziness of filming and promoting my films, I often dream of diving into crystalline waters and watching sea turtles in lagoons that look like giant swimming pools! You are constantly in the spotlight. Do you ever get the impression you are losing a certain innocence, or natural touch? I wouldn’t say you lose your innocence, but you do feel a certain alienation when the whole world looks at you in one way and treats you in one way when, deep down, you’re still the same person. I don’t feel different but when I’m in an elevator and the doors open, everyone looks at me. I don’t understand why all these people are holding their breath as if I was inaccessible! So it’s a quite unsettling. (Laughs)

58

Do you think you will always stay the same? I mean always be authentic … I really hope so. Sometimes it’s frustrating because it can all backfire simply because you said something stupid. It’s very unsettling because at the same time as everyone’s telling me to be myself, I’m reaching a point where deep down inside me I’m saying: “No, don’t say that.” (Laughs). So I self-censure. I can understand just how hard it is not to change because everyone around you changes. For example, I was recently at a friend’s birthday and I took her to buy a French bulldog because she’s always dreamed of having that race of dog. I was chatting to her in her garden, having a really nice time, when I realised she was taking photos of me and selling them online. It started out with buying a Bulldog with my friend and ended up in an argument. So I don’t want to change but people really have to cut out stupid stuff. But how can you handle this fame that has been raining down on you since you were so young? I don’t think it would be very good for my mental health to agree with you whole-heartedly – quite simply because I have never seen myself as a star! You know a lot of people have me all wrong; on the one hand there is work, the parties, the premiers and film promotion. But after that I go quietly home, throw on jeans and a T-shirt and go and do the shopping! I don’t really feel part of all this circus that surrounds me – it’s as if it was happening to someone else! Do you have a secret that keep’s you in touch with reality? I don’t really know. I tr y to keep things in perspective. I didn’t grow up in this world; I didn’t even grow up in Los Angeles. No, I grew up in Kentucky. As for success, it didn’t come to me all that quickly. Before breaking through I struggled quite a lot! I’m not someone who likes to be isolated or who delegates either. I really don’t want to be shut up in an

ivory tower. What’s more, when I go into a supermarket, I know the price of things, believe me. I don’t get ripped off because I look at the tickets and I compare prices like we were talking about earlier! Right, you can still go into a supermarket. So it’s not a joke? (Laughs) OK, sometimes it’s a bit hard. For example, the other day I was in my car when I went past a shop and I thought to myself: “ You know what, I need some Tupper w a re.” So I stopped to buy some. Of course, once inside the shop there were a few glances and some people were pointing at me. Someone even pushed into me. The hardest part, I’ll let you in on something here, is that the simplest things become a cause of anxiet y. Like going to the supermarket to do my shopping or going to the dry cleaners etc. And you know why? Because I don’t know what might happen. Things can happen so fast. And does that stress you? Constantly! I have nightmares about it all the time. I dream I’m in a shopping mall and that all these people are surrounding me and I have nowhere to go. Sometimes it’s just easier to call friends and ask them to stop by the store and pick me up some bananas on their way over. When it comes to it, I’d rather go to a premier; I know what to expect! In short, I have the impression that the hunter I play in Hunger Games will herself be hunted in real life. Going back to Kentucky, yesterday was the famous horse race, the widely-publicised Kentucky Derby. Does that bring back happy memories for you? I have gone to horse races but never that one. The Derby is for rich people. So I watched it on television. It has to be said tickets for it are so expensive! Have you ever bet on a horse? No! I work too hard to earn my money. When I lose two dollars I get mad. It really annoys me!

You seem to have a great sense of humour. Are you aware of that? This quality has helped me get over everything I’ve been through, endured and put up with. My father has a very good sense of humour and he always taught me to laugh at myself. Humour is very important to me; I really need to laugh every day. I also like having intellectual conversations but after about five minutes I’ve had enough! (Laughs) You once said you ate spaghetti and meatballs for breakfast. That’s not really a Hollywood diet is it? I never go on a diet for these films; I don’t need to. And you know why? Because with a saga like Hunger Games or X Men, you never stop running, jumping and leaping. It’s very demanding, physically. On a day’s filming we spend half the time exercising our muscles in one way or another. Also, I’m still young so I don’t really need to diet. I leave my metabolism well alone. That said, I know that one day I will have to watch my weight. When you’re my age you can work things off easily; as the years go by that becomes more complicated. Who are the people you admire the most, who inspire you or who have had a real influence on you? To start with, Mer yl Streep. She is by fa r my favour ite actress. I can’t be the only one to admire her so much! (Laughs). I am also a total fan of the director Susanne Blier with whom I’m going to make a film soon. Lastly, I adore Mother Theresa, Abraham Lincoln and my mother! Why my mother? Because she has always been in f initely pat ient w it h me. Because she has never judged me. Because she has always helped me make my dreams come true and given me selfconfidence. I hope that when I have children I will be as perfect a mother as she is! I also love her because she never let me starve! (Laughs)

What about you Oscar, where is that? In the family home. Initially I put it away in a cupboard but then I changed my mind! Now it is in a display cabinet at my parents’. But it’s not too obvious either; it doesn’t leap out at you as soon as you walk in. You know, I’m not interested in impressing people with this trophy. I would rather people felt at ease. They can even touch it! Incidentally I hate people who are pretentious or show-offs. So it was normal that I played down my Oscar and my other awards. In the beginning, like I said, I put it in a cupboard in my room! My mother didn’t think that was the best place for it, she thought such a trophy deserved better! So we reached an agreement. In X Men, your character knew different times. Does the one you’re currently living in suit you? I like this time. I would just like technology to slow down a little. I even wonder how this technological one-upmanship is going to affect the new generation of kids. I don’t think they’ll ever know what it means to be bored! I’m convinced that they associate thinking things over and doing nothing with a form of depression. And it’s nothing to do with it. It’s frightening to think that this new generation is constantly in “hyper active” mode and that it never stops! It should take the time to take a look at what’s around. In short, they don’t know what contemplation is and I find that terrifying! That said, with each new generation we always have the feeling that we’re damned and that things are going to get worse! You once declared that the Internet had become too intrusive, especially in our private lives [Jennifer suffered from this after pictures of her naked were put online]. But this technology also offers some people a chance to express themselves … You know, there’s good and bad in everything! With the Internet everyone now has a platform. It’s a very powerful tool which, for example, enables us

60

to know when bombs are raining down on Afghanistan. And all because someone f ilmed this drama on their phone. In those cases the Internet is useful because it enables us to stay informed. It’s also a way for women to express themselves and gives them a platform. Now if you use this means of communication to say that someone looks fat when they dress like that, I’m sorry but it’s not the same thing! If you could change one thing in your life what would it be? I wouldn’t change anything! It’s because of the mistakes I’ve made that I’ve become who I am so I don’t want to go back. That said, I would like the law to change about the paparazzi to improve our lives. After Hunger Games, I tried to go on holiday with a few girlfriends, right up until we noticed a paparazzi following us with his zoom lens. That ruined our holidays and after two days we decided to go

home. With other actors and actresses we often talk about the paparazzi and how their behaviour affects our lives. The worry is that if we start talking about it in the press you will always have people replying: “Shut up! You’re millionaires and what happens to you only affects a tiny percentage of people in the world!” Personally, I love my job! The problem is that when the Second Amendment was written press freedom was included in it. Unfortunately it was written hundreds of years ago when there were no celebrities. What do I see now? The paparazzi are protected under the law and I’m not! As an actress, I would prefer that the only time you see me is when I am filming or am in a role. Or when I’m promoting that film. However, I do not want to see photos of me walking my dog. Oh my God, I said the Second Amendment! I made a mistake. Of course I mean the First Amendment; the second is the right to bear arms! (Laughs)

What does it mean to you to be the most bankable actress of the moment? I don’t like that word – it reduces us to merchandise, to a countable object. Recognition from your peers is flattering, it’s exhilarating but saying you are “bankable” is something I can’t stand. Why bring it all back to money? In American Hustle, you played Christian Bale’s wife. Would you be a good housewife? Yes! I love cooking and making sure that the place where I live is clean. They’re two essential qualities of a housewife aren’t they? On the other hand, I’m not sure that I’m the kind of girl you can stick in a corner, who you can ask to peel the potatoes! The guy who can reduce me to the silent majority hasn’t been born yet, I can tell you!

Florent

Manaudou

F

A legend at just 26 years old

rench sw immer F lorent Manaudou st ands out a s much for his si ze (6ft 5in/1.9 9m a nd 15 - a nd- a -ha l f stone/9 9kg) a s for the records he set in the pool in just a few short years. Indeed, this young Olympic champion with an air of Marlon Brando about him has stamped his personality, like his devastating smile, on the world of competitive sport. We take a look at the extraordinary career of this exceptional champion. By Laure Delvigo - Photo by Olivier Rieu

The youngest of three children, F lorent Manaudou wa s immersed in sport from an early age. He grew up in Ambérieuen-Bugey, in the Ain department of France, far from the madding crowd. The champion from the London Olympics still prefers the calm of a r ural env ironment, dem onstrated by his passion for travelling to countries which abound in nature. “Rio is one of the three most wonderful trips I have made along with Iceland and recent ly Tahit i. I love nat ure. I haven’t been to big cities such as New York or Tokyo … I haven’t done all that, because I’m not sure I’d like it more than I like nature. Maybe it’s because I’m a country boy too!” Florent Manaudou stands out not only for his muscular physique, but also for his air of calm, his ability to communicate, to take a step back from events, and his ability to analyse. He knows all about being in the media spotlight. His sister Laure was a French swimm i ng icon, who s wept t he board from 2001 to 2007. Far

62

from being discouraged by this competition, he dedicated his childhood to swimming. Quickly realising how good he was, Manaudou strove to break through to the highest level following in his sister’s wake. After winning the French junior 50m freestyle title in 2007, he exploded into the world’s sporting spotlight, w inning gold at the London Oly mpics in L o n d o n f i v e y e a r s l a t e r. T he ea se w it h wh ich he achieved one ambition after another impressed the press and people in the sport alike. However, this laid-back ap proach is only a front because Manaudou insists on rigorous and precise weekly training sessions: nine sessions in the water of between one and a half and two hours, three sessions of weight training, and two others dedicated to bodybuilding. This is a man who is organised and meticulous “even when he packs his suitcase”. A soldier, promoted to the rank of sergeant in an artillery regiment and made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 2013, he likes everything to be prop-

erly regimented: “I am ver y ordered, it’s in my character. My father is the same and I like it when everything is tidy.” It is without doubt his way of mastering the elements both in and out of the water. Manaudou, who is also famous for the dimples on his manly jaw, knows exactly what he wants. He is very determined and doesn’t hesitate to call into question some of the choices made by his coaches. So when one hundredth of a second deprived him of a second gold in the 50 metres freestyle at the Rio Olympics in 2016, he felt bruised and slightly mutinous and turned his back on swimming to go and try something else. “I prefer to call it a digression because I’m giving myself the right to come back and also giving myself the right to stop. It’s a little hazy, because I’m guided by what I want to do. For the moment, I want to be out of the pool and maybe one day when I’m watching a competition, I will want to get back in,” he said. Like his father before him, he loves handball and he turned his words into deeds,

training and then signing in autumn 2016 for the handball club in Aix-en-Provence. As a champion he is humble, as a man he is mature. As a person who was at the very height of his discipline he wants to test himself and not miss out on a sporting career outside the pool, and also to have fun. “I want to enjoy my life a little more than I did before, where the only aim was to be number one. I want to do simple things, like going out on my motorbike with my friends!” The man with the face of an angel and with obvious sex appeal also loves his place in the spotlight, and the big brands have taken notice. A fan of “Mâle” by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Manaudou has also captivated some of the great names of fashion, such as Karl Lagerfeld for whom he recently posed. And while the French Sportsman of the Year 2015 has not definitively left the pool, the handball player also plays guitar and dreams of a future in acting. With so many varied ambitions, we are sure that such a born competitor is bound to succeed!

Camille

Lacourt

Swimming, success and style

C

amille Lacourt is one of the best backstroke swimmers in the history of French swimming. He has been crowned national, European, and world champion multiple times, is at the top of his field and draws admiring glances for his handsome looks and sculpted physique. He is the ambassador for several luxury brands but this young father, who loves surfing and travel, is no slave to his image. We caught up with him between a competition in Tahiti and a photoshoot for Blush. Meets with the icon of the swimming pool. By Laure Delvigo - Photo by Olivier Rieu

With his slightly Scandinavian looks, this native of the southwest town of Narbonne began swimming at the age of five. His sporting talent, boosted by his physical attributes (2.0 metres tall at a weight of 85 kilos), really blossomed at 16 when he won the bronze medal at the French junior championships. He then won the French 100 metres and 200m titles in 2005 and left his home town to begin a successful partnership with Philippe Lucas, the mentor of French swimming superstar Laure Manaudou. The pool at Cannet-en-Roussillon is synonymous with exacting and interminable training sessions. Lacourt recalls “two great, very hard, years” under the watchful eye of Lucas for whom he retains a high profes siona l a nd per sona l regard: “I have great memories of this character, as a coach. I really like Philippe. He is someone I war med to ver y much and it was a great group, despite the tough training because we really did swim a lot. We did less weights than in

Marseille. It wa s di f ferent, we clocked up a lot of k ilomet res i n t he w at er a nd I wasn’t used to that, so it w a s ne w a nd v er y h a r d .” His efforts paid off because he won two French senior longcourse titles and snapped up the national 50m backstroke record as well. He broke into the French national team but injury prevented him from taking part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was determined to bounce back and so he left Luca s’ group to train in the ‘Cercle des nageurs’ group in Marseille under the tutelage of Romain Bar nier. The sessions were more geared towards physical work and the weight-training seemed to suit him. Lacourt marked his return to the pool in 20 0 9 -2010 by becoming European champion in Budapest in the 100m backstroke, beating the European record in the process and setting the second-fastest time in history over the distance. In 2011 he was voted European swimmer of the year and in

the same year tied for the gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the World Championships in Shanghai with his compatriot Jérémy Stravius. After a mixed London Olympics he took a break which was followed by several years of success. He won the World Championships in Barcelona in 2013 and t wo years later in Kazan, and the European title in London in 2016, all in 50m backstroke. Only the Olympic Games eluded him, leaving him with a feeling of unf inished business, especially when he speaks of his belief that Russian and Chinese competitors at the Rio Games had been doping. “They had no place at the Olympic Games. It was probably not the moment to shout my mouth off, but I still believe what I said!” said Lacourt. With his post-swimming career flourishing, Lacourt is already sketching out what happens and his life as a young father has become “his new priority”: “Being a dad changes everything. It gives you a real goal in life and it’s just extraordi-

nary.” He also knows how to make the most of his image as a model and is the muse for several brands, including Clarins, for whom he has been ambassador since 2011, also Chanel and not forgetting the J12 Chromatic watch. But t he champion remains humble when it comes to his titles and also to his physique. “You are much more beautiful when you win! One year I was fifth at the World Championships and I was not so beautiful then!… The following year, when I won, I was much more beautiful, so … it really made me laugh. So much the better!” he said. The enthusiastic surfer and t r aveller who likes to v isit “Rome, Bali and New York” also dreams of setting up his own company to pass on his passion for swimming to a younger generation, and his experience of high-performance to business seminars. Who says swimmers have a head full of water?

A

t just 21 years old, Gigi Hadid is the new darling of stylists and designers. A catwalk star, the daughter of model Yolanda Hadid is signing contract after contract and knows just how to work both her stunning figure and the lagoon blue eyes that are her trademark. We shine the spotlight on the cream of the crop of the moment. By Laure Delvigo

She has come a long way since her first contract with Guess at the age of just seven! These days Gigi Hadid walks the red carpets as a star model and gets all the cameras f lashing. Her secret? Her modern, American charm which has made her t he d a rl i ng o f t he m a jor designers and leading labels. Because although she may wear sophisticated make-up on the catwalks, away from the shows and the fashion weeks, Gigi Hadid opts for a very natural look. Wit h each appear ance, t he young model of fers us innovat ive new hair st yles, u na sha med ly a lter nat i ng between long, wav y locks or a shagg y bob or even a wet look. And her nude make-up, enhanced simply by purple lipstick or lip gloss, makes her a

model for younger generations. And yet at the end of 2015, Kendall Jenner’s best friend fou nd her sel f t he t a rget for all sorts of criticism on socia l med ia. T he rea son? Her curves. Some comments questioned her right to be on catwalks alongside the likes of Cara Delevingne or Emily Ratajkowski. The remarks were so cruel that Gigi eventually took to Instagram to hit back at cyber bullying. “No, I don’t have the same body type as other models in shows,” she wrote. “Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs.” Far from letting the comments get her down, Zayn Malik’s girlfriend added defiantly: “Your mean comments don’t make me want to change my body, they don’t make me want to say no to designers that ask me to be in their shows.”

Because at a t ime when skinny models on the catwalk h a v e b e c o m e u b i q u it o u s , it is Gigi Hadid who is the rising st ar for major labels and desig ners. Her DutchPalestinian roots, her natural style and her deep blue eyes a re feat u red i n nu merou s publ ic it y c a mp a ig n s bu i lt around her. And the contracts w ith major labels just keep coming; named ambassador for Gemey Maybelline in January 2015, Gigi has also launched a capsule collection together with Tommy Hilfiger. The aim? To ally the model’s modern American spirit with the label’s history. Mea nwhi le, G ig i ha s been f r y i ng ot her f i sh: on t he catwalk for Victoria’s Secret, the Holy Grail for models, appearing in a video by top DJ Calvin Harris and working

with Balmain and Chanel for Fashion Week 2016. The biggest names in fashion want Gigi who so far has managed her career w it h aplomb – t he per fect response to those comments about her figure. When her abs were criticised, she came out fighting (literally) in a Reebok campaign in October. Some people thinks her boobs are too big – Gigi (whose sister Bella is also a model) responded by appearing topless for Fendi at the last Milan Fashion Week. By turning her cur ves into her trademark, Gigi Hadid wants to change the fashion world in the same way Laetitia Casta and Cindy Crawford did in the 1990s. We think she’s succeeded.

Le Rhöne

For the love of beautiful watches When two old friends join forces to create a line of custom-made watches, what do you get? A unique range called Le Rhöne. With the “¨” like a sign of friendship (found on the screws of each watch), the tone is set … We went to meet them. By Quitterie Pasquesoone

74

Sometimes the best business pa r t ner sh ip s st a r t w it h a friendship. It all began in 2012 when Loïc Florentin and Timo Rajakoski, two friends who loved cars and watches, decided to pool their talents and create Le Rhöne, a brand of custom-made fine watches. Their unique selling point is that they give their discerning c u stomer s t he p o s sibi l it y

of integrating a car engine component into their watch, for example on the side. “We love cars … and we’re not the only ones! So it is above all about that emotion,” said Loïc Florentin, “that and the pleasure of wearing part of a car on your wrist.” The Road Racer limited collection was born.

time keepers

New designs Following on from their success, the two friends are now keen to collaborate with other car brands, including GT models of famous brands, to meet the demands and desires of car enthusiasts. “We are also working on designing new collections and new models for 2017,” he said. “They won’t all have a car theme. We want more than anything to highlight our unique savoir-faire, which doesn’t stop at integrating engine parts.” Le Rhöne offers a wide variety of technical details (perpetual calendars, tourbillons, etc …) and uses high-quality, specialist materials such as grey gold, carbon or titanium along with new dial structures, with different colour codes - there are numerous possible options for each watch. And the promise of some great surprises …

A unique savoir-faire Le Rhöne also takes great pride in its unique savoir-faire, which is what makes its watches truly exceptional. “Our watches are one hundred percent Swiss made,” said Timo Rajakoski. “They are not just assembled in Sw itzerland, as is often the case, but entirely made there. To ensure the highest qualit y work, we have also surrounded ourselves with the finest craftsmen, in the best workshops. They are the ones who make the needles, the cases, the dials … We are proud of this distinction.” To find out more: lerhone.com

FMR

Bespoke Swiss watchmaking

Matthieu Meli

By Camille Bulgary

They are based in the heart of the Jura region, the Vallée de Joux, the cradle of Swiss highclass watchmaking, bringing together craftsmanship and technology to create contemporary watches steeped in history. Having earned their stripes with well-known manufacturers, such as Audemars-Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre and A. Lange & Söhne, f ine watchmaking holds no secrets for them. We meet these lovers of rare and luxurious objects who design the watch of your dreams. How did you meet? It was at Jaeger-LeCoultre, in 2009. Hav ing always placed great importance on sharing tasks, we quickly became an effective team. Blaise brought his knowledge of watchmaking mechanisms and craftsmanship, and I brought my skills in component watch parts and technological integration. So we really complemented each other’s work, by helping and challenging each other.

76

Why did you decide to create FMR? We noticed the growing gap between the specific demands of customers and what was on offer which was too restrictive in terms of customisation. Today’s tailor-made watch is closer to a limited edition piece of haute couture fashion. Using this observation as a starting point, we decided to offer a fully bespoke watchmaking service. Each element of the watch is created without the conventional limits of a standard product, and with the utmost conscientiousness. Why create a pure bespoke watch? The customer is involved in every phase of the design, giving him a unique connection with his watch. The case, the dial, the movement and the strap: nothing is left to chance in the creation of these exceptional pieces. Once the watch is worn, it becomes the embodiment of this experience ; meeting the jeweller translates the customer’s desires into art. The other

characteristic is that it bears only the hallmark of the person who created it. Can you tell us more? The customer enjoys all the pleasure of the artistic process in creating his watch with the help of professionals who guarantee it will be a UNIQUE experience. The men and women who contact us are usually people who appreciate works of art. Particular importance is placed on meeting the craftsmen who will bring the ob ject of their desire to life - the watchmaker, t he enameler, the engraver, the guillocheur and the beveller. What are demanding customers looking for? They are people who want to be part of an exceptional experience and want to express their personality through a piece of jewellery, more specifically a watch. With us, they are at the very heart of the creative process, playing an active role in every stage of the creation and

Blaise Rochat shaping of their watch. This is how we value the creativity of each of our customers and help them acquire their dream watch. What is the most remarkable request you have had? One of our clients wanted a watch to remind her of someone she w a s ver y close to. She wanted it to remind her of her grandmother who lived on the Côte d’Azur. So we developed an element of the watch which gave off a subtle smell of lavender which lasted over time without losing its intensity. This is an example of the attention to detail we are able to give to a project. How do you see the future development of FMR? We plan to bring international craftsmen into our team. We would also like to hold design sessions outside Switzerland - at the moment we host most of our clients in Geneva. bespoke.fmr-swiss.ch - +41 78 657 06 19

Robertino Zancan, the jewellery lover

Distinctive and dazzling

The Zancan jewellery and watch collection is a revelation Exceptional jewellery to adorn your every move, with a pure and highclass style that defines the modern man: distinctive and sophisticated, the Zancan collection shines out to reveal every aspect of these gentlemen. By Fiona Esther

80

Here he is, the man whose genius can express all the emotion of a story, all the value, subtlety and beauty which can’t be put into words. The jewellery and watchmaking designs bearing the name Robertino Zancan speak volumes and certainly master the art of suggestion! And because TO HAVE is good, but TO BE is infinitely better the strength of this exceptional designer lies in the fact that each model has a soul, they give each man a voice and unveil the authenticity of each personality. It all takes shape in northern Italy, at the crossroads between the Dolce Vita and the capital of good taste. From jewelled treasures to masterpieces of watchmaking, the collections describe, imagine and embody the unexpected like masterpieces worthy of the greatest artists of Vicenza … S ome w ay bet ween t he elegance that embodies “Made in Italy” fashion and the seduction interwoven with a Don Giovanni charm, the Zancan collections are the irresistible combination of a unique style and a disarming charisma, to which only items of Zancan jewellery and watches have the key.

The wonders of the collections that make each model, a work of art … Ref lecting masculinity with a touch of finesse and delicacy - and just a hint of the male temperament - sometimes arrogant, go-getter or rebel, somet imes discreet, quiet and mysterious … the genius of Zancan’s work is that it highlights every aspect of the personality, to make far more of a statement about character and authenticity than a mere piece of jewellery or an ornament can, the jewellery designs and watches created by Robertino Zancan are a revelation. They are a way of expressing yourself, a promise of dreams or vows for eternity ; there is

a unique piece for however you wish to affirm yourself. Creating exquisite and sumptuous designs, the most talented jewellers, gem setters and goldsmiths have come together to produce these creative treasures under the watchful eye of the designer and true “master builder” Zancan. Always on trend and always with a signature avant-garde touch by Zancan, it is the care, attention and precision brought to the smallest detail, which reflects this aspect of the man and give him that glittering shine, rather like the faces of a diamond.

When progress and innovation meet craftsmanship … The purest and most sought after materials inspire the creativity, to imagine, sculpt and conceive the wonders of the collection. They are a mythical fusion between state-of-the-art technology and authentic craftsmanship, which blend brilliantly to give birth to the most breathtaking jewellery and watches! The Zancan collections, with their surprising designs and incorporating ideas tinged with originality and poetry, are undeniably timeless. Revelations in gold and dia monds, wedding rings in carbon and white sapphires, soft leathers and precious metals the details subtly encrusted, enhanced with rare stones and refined settings, encapsulate each personality. Robertino Zancan’s designs capture the male personality with passion, excellence and inspiration to “sum up every man without him having to even speak”. His collections travel the continents with more than one thousand points of sale around the globe and will be on show, for your pleasure from March 23 to 30 2017, at the next BaselWorld fair, where the greatest jewellers and watchmakers from around the world gather.

La Réserve Paris Earning a place among the elite

A haven of peace located just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Parisian life, La Réserve Paris - Hotel & Spa has just joined the exclusive circle of Palace hotels – the first hotel in the French capital to be so honoured. Just 23 establishments in France have been awarded the label since its creation in 2010. And this is just the latest trophy this exceptional hotel has earned. By Laure Delvigo

A hotel proud to be different Nestled above the Champs Elysées gardens, just behind the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, La Réserve Paris - Hotel & Spa offers a wonderful view of the Grand Palais, the Panthéon, the Eiffel Tower and the Concorde obelisk, while retaining the feel of a private residence. It all began when atypical businessman Michel Reybier started looking for a chance to acquire another property that had the potential to meet the standards of refined comfort that characterise his establishments. When he turned his attention to the former private residence of Pierre Cardin, he was able to make the most of the elegance hidden behind the unassuming exterior of this apartment building dating back to 1854.

Unparalleled luxur y in memory of the Belle Époque Indeed the scenography of La Réser ve Par is, w ith it s typically Parisian little garden, is anything but banal. Each g uest discovers generous spaces in which interior designer Jacques Garcia has been hard at work. The mission of this great man

120

of taste and fan of the baroque was to convert the private residence into a luxury setting. Mission accomplished! Garcia exploited the premises’ naturally sunny ambiance, balancing it with rich fabric hangings. The décor is enhanced by t radit ional furniture including antiques picked up here and there, while the refinement of Parisian chic is highlighted through damask drapes, embossed materials, silk taffetas, Versailles parquet, lights cradled in velvet and Cordo ba leather. With such a fine setting, La Réserve reaches back to the building’s Second Empire roots, offering guests a concentrate of Parisian luxur y, a symbol of the BelleÉpoque. A little-known address, the establishment shuns ostentation, preferring privacy in which customer relat ions, the discretion of staff and the pleasure of living in the moment are as one. As well as its 26 suites and 14 rooms, La Réserve boasts a library reserved for guests, a smoking lounge and a spa. Along with a 16-metre indoor pool and a gym and fitness coach, the spa offers treatments and massages.

travel

Two restaurants in an enchanting setting La Réserve is home to a double Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Gabriel, run with g reat ent husia sm by Chef Jérôme Banctel. After several months at the Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower, Banctel then worked as sous-chef at the Ambroisie where Alain Senderens’s former number two created a menu to match the premises: full of f lavour and inspiration. A blend of naturalness and fantasy for the palate, the chef ’s skill shines through his creativity and his ability to revisit the classics of French gastronomy. Foodies can choose between two terraces; one facing the Avenue Gabriel and the other located in the patio of the inner courtyard for a romantic dinner or a business lunch in complete discretion. And if guests are drawn with each step by the desire to travel then they can opt for La Réser ve’s second rest aurant, La Pagode de Cos (formerly the Grand Salon). Here the aromas rising from the dishes reveal a clever use of spices. And if you are not filled with wanderlust, you should be aware that the Spice Route also detours via some of the

La Réser ve classics. A date for your diaries – La Pagode de Cos host s an exclusive oenological evening on the first Thursday of the month.

A philosophy that revolves around the guest Here discretion is elevated to an art form. The establishment offers guests haute couture service with a dedicated butler for each room or suite. Charged with watching over every detail on a daily basis, he symbolises the values the hotel believes in: availability, proximity, privacy, comfort and excellence. These are the arguments that appealed to France Atout as it considered the 2016 vintage of “Palace” labels and the jury of the Villégiature Awards which named La Réserve “Best welcome and service in a hotel in Europe – 80 rooms” and “Grand Prize for the Best Hotel in Europe”. L a Réser ve Pa r is, a t r u ly exceptional address.

auritius is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. T here are lu xur y hotels of course, but that’s not all. There is culture, natural sites to explore, gastronomy and picturesque festivals; we take a tour of this sunny part of the world that is like nowhere else on earth. By Quitterie Pasquesoone

Mauritius; a country full of history and culture Mauritius, the main island of the Republic of Mauritius in the heart of the Indian Ocean, ha s a fa scinat ing pa st and colonial heritage. The result is a colourful culture that is one of the draws of the island today. During your trip to Mauritius, you can explore places that tell the story of its fascinating history. Among them are U N E S C O World Her ita ge sites such a s Mor ne Br ab a nt , one of t he b e stk now n part s of t he island. T h i s sma l l mou nt a i n w it h a 555 -metre summit on the south-west tip of the island became a symbol of freedom and was a refuge for f leeing slaves. It attracts a lot of visitors today and is a place of memorial for the colonial period of Mauritius. Visitors who want to visit a typical house from the colonial period will love

the Domaine des Aubineaux, situated in the hills, one of the last colonial mansions typical of the late 19th century. With furniture from the Compagnie des Indes, a magnificent collection of photos and its distillery for essential oils it is well worth exploring! After a tea break, you can f inish your historic visit in style with a walk around the floral park and the beautiful garden with camphor wood and other native trees.

So many natural wonders to discover Mauritius is of course also a hymn to nature in all its splendour. Its beaches are some of the most beautiful jewels on the island and you can’t fail to appreciate its turquoise waters and its lagoon which is among the most beautiful in the world. But that’s not all. Mauritius also has lots of lush vegetation and

wonderful things to discover inland. Our favourite is the Black River Gorges National Park formed from the Macchabee, Bel Ombre and Combo Nature Reser ves which were combined to pre ser ve t he la st nat ive forest of t he isla nd. T he fa mou s ebony tree grows here, which supplied the hardest wood in the world for the construction of warships. The park is also the starting point for many hiking trails ranging from an all-day excursion to a few shorter trips, such as the one to the peak of Black River, the highest peak on the island at an altitude of 828 metres. Another area of interest is the famous 37-hectare Jardin de Pamplemousses, created in the 18th century by the botanist Pierre Poivre and home to numerous species from all over the world, including the baobab, giant water lilies and more than 95 species of palm trees.

Activities to suit everyone Those who love to take it easy will enjoy making the most of the long white sandy beaches of Mauritius, but those in search of more varied activity will not be disappointed. Scuba diving, for example, is one of THE things to do in in Mauritius. With its generous lagoons, coral reefs and vast maritime expanses, underwater enthusiasts can explore a world teeming with exot ica lly-named colour f ul fish, interestingly shaped coral, or shipwrecks that take you back to the time of the pirates and corsairs who once roamed the Indian Ocean. Hikers will also find several trails in Mauritius. There are numerous peaks inland which in addition to the pleasure of the climb also offer magnificent panoramas of the different shades of green and the varied blues of the lagoons. As for the golf, well that is unmissable. Out of the million visitors who come to the island each year, about 60,000 come to play golf! Ten 18-hole courses and three nine-hole courses are among the most beautiful in the world and with ideal playing conditions, players will be spoiled for choice on Mauritius. Finally, for those with a head for heights are ULM seaplanes and helicopter rides …

124

There is a long list of activities - it’s up to you to decide which ones appeal to you most!

And also … Mauritius also has a unique cuisine, which w ill delight the palates of all gourmets … The multicultural face of the island shows in its gastronomy whose particularity lies in its surprising creativity, its ability to marry spices and colours, f lavours and perfumes in seductive recipes for v isitors. Today, it is an explosion of tastes and recipes from China, India, the Near and Middle East, France and Africa that invites you to the island of a thousand flavours. You must also discover the spirituality in Mauritius, which translates into a peace of mind and an attitude which lends itself to generosity, sharing, caring and benevolence. I’m sure you will be delighted and moved by it … Don’t forget to note in your diary the various picturesque festivals that might be t ak ing place while you are visiting. Whether it be the festival of spring in February or the Divali festival in October and November, there are so many ways to discover Mauritius. All good reasons not to put it off any longer; enjoy your trip to Mauritius!

World™, The M de Mégève re-opened its doors this season in the chicest of mountain villages made popular by the Rothschilds. At the M, we like the warm and inviting feel of the decor, brilliantly designed by the Savoyard Alain Perrier, who loves to mix styles. We also like the cuisine of Chef Stéphane Thoréton who made his name at the prestigious Taillevent, Ledoyen and Drouant as well as the Palace Menthon. At the SoMMet restaurant, Stéphane strives to get back to the flavours of great French gastronomy: authentic cuisine and a real “French service”, while at the Bistrot du M, the mountain chic spirit will delight every guest. For après-ski, we recommend the succulent chocolate fondant tart with chestnut, before a delicious plunge into the pool where you can swim against the current or take time out at the Cinq Mondes spa. We also love the carriage ride through Mégève in the M carriage. So romantic! 15 route de Rochebrune - 74120 Megève +33 (0)4 50 21 41 09 - reservation@mdemegeve.com - mdemegeve.com

Courchevel White gold and the height of excellence

T

he first ever ski resort to be created from nothing, Courchevel is located in Savoie, in the heart of the Tarentaise valley. Organised around five villages, the resort boasts a multitude of activities accessible to all, as well as a party reputation with a very elite, Russian feel.

By Laure Delvigo - Illustration Daseugen

Courchevel, a fairy tale Before becoming one of the most exclusive ski resorts in the Alps, Couchevel was a prime destination for summer visitors. The inauguration of the first establishment, the Lac Bleu in 1908 in the Saint-Bon area, was the beginning of a wonderful success story. Skiing made its début just before 1914 and by 1920 qualified instructors were holding their first lessons. The zone created by the three valleys of Saint-Bon, the Allues and the Bellevilles attracted investors, particularly from Great Britain. At the same time, the first chalet-hotels and the first ski school opened. Before the Second World War, what was to become Courchevel 1550 already had drag lifts but it wasn’t until May 3, 1946 that major construction work began on a world class ski area when SaintBon agreed to hand over its land to the Savoie region.

136

1946: the creation of a ski resort The organisation of this second generation ski resort was entrusted to architect Laurent Chappis and engineer Maurice Michaud. Courchevel aimed straight away for a high-end clientèle in order to recoup the installation, operating and maintenance costs of the ski lifts. The resort grew under the aegis of Gilles de La Rocque, the Director of the tourist office from 1960 to 1982. He promoted Courchevel on every continent and encouraged a dynamic, cultural policy. During the 1992 Winter Olympics the ski jumping and Nordic Combined events were held at Courchevel which provided the impetus to renovate and upgrade the spot after which t he G er man da ily Die Welt described Courchevel as “the most beautiful ski resort in t he world ”. W h i le t he cl i entèle at the time was mainly

British, French and Spanish, in the 1990s the Russians discovered the resort. Courchevel soon became a holiday destination for billionaires and other members of the Russian jet set.

A party atmosphere and a huge ski area T he p a r t y a t mo s pher e i n Courchevel is largely due to this Russian clientèle about which much has been written. Whether fact or simply rumour, the tales of the wildest eccentricities created a new reputation for the resort. Courchevel indeed celebrates the Russian New Year in style, dressing the resort in the colours of the land of Tsars and laying on firework displays, entertainment and a Father Christmas parade with his Snegurochka, or Snow Maiden as a bonus! Meanwhile, the theme of opulence is cleverly maintained with the presence of three luxury hotels of unparalleled com-

fort - 5-star establishments offering personalised ser vices and night clubs hosting wild parties - Michelin-starred restaurants with refined menus and luxur y boutiques from the finest jewellers. And yet Courchevel is also a perfect resort for those looking to test their skills on the slopes and try out new sporting activities. The biggest ski area in the world, the Trois -Vallées includes Courchevel’s 150 kilometres of pistes, accessible via 58 ski lifts. From beginners to advanced skiers, there is something for visitors of all levels. Cross-country, back-country, trekking, snowboarding and skidooing; the range of activities on offer in the winter is what attracts families as well as the bling-chic brigade to Courchevel!

After an excess of minimalism, we are now seeing the birth of a new style in eccentric decoration, the comeback of the baroque, and the dandy, with great emphasis on the fantastical, the off-beat and the charming. The rules of the game are to make décor more theatrical, to opt for joyful and elegant maximalism, to play the Beautifully Bizarre card. This is a game with rules, periods, styles and genres. What was your reaction when you found out about the project? I a l r e a d y k ne w t h i s building and I had fallen under its spell long before I was asked to convert it. When I visited it for the first time, the interior was totally rundown. It looked like an abandoned Venetian palace. It touched me and its soul grabbed me straightaway.

144

How do you work?

What inspired its name?

Focusing on herit age value in t his k ind of project is paramount. I don’t like the word decoration, because I need t o f i nd me a n i n g i n what I do. I am looking for a common thread to symbolise the place. And above all, I wanted to remodel the inside in symbiosis with the exterior architecture.

It i s v e r y e v o c a t i v e because it sums up an era. It resonates like a journey through time. That period of sea bathing, of the resorts, of a cert a in ref inement which seems a bit nostalgic today but which shines into the deep soul of this place. While we were working, we came across a fashion photo where the mannequin was wearing a white linen suit with ver y f ine stripes.

From the Molitor in Paris to the forthcoming Hotel Baccarat in Dubai, JeanPhilippe Nuel’s signature style is one of contrasts where no guest will ever be disappointed by ostentatious decoration or impersonal design. At the Cures Marines in Trouville, the renowned Ligne Roset, Cinna and Roche-Bobois designer went for volume in his approach, using concentric circles in total harmony with the light and the environment, creating a dialogue between sky and sea. Is that what inspired all the grey, white and blue? Yes, because it was the obvious thing to do: seaside elegance which is both modern and timeless. T he desig n w a s built around the fashion of that era. What’s more, its neo-classical façade, yellowed over time, has resu med it s or ig i na l identity with a whiteness enhanced by glittering pearl gray so it looks like a peninsula between the port and the sea.

What is left of the past? Everything that we could keep. We have restored and re-used frescoes discovered in some of the rooms, kept a brick wall in its original state, kept the domes and played with the proportions to regain the magnitude of the ancient baths. Baroque and modernity talk to one another in a contemporary approach that highlights this heritage. It’s like a book that I started, leaving it to the people to continue the story. That is the magic of my work.

aomi, Cindy, Stéphanie, Christy … Linda, Claudia, Nadja, Tatjana … These names may not mean much to the young Generation Y growing up on Instagram and Snapchat. But most people only have to hear them to conjure up images of absolute beauty that are forever engraved in fashion history. They were so much more than mere models, more even than top models, they were the supermodels of the 1990s - the most beautiful women in the world. They were icons, stars. One of the men behind this success and who helped discover them was the German photographer Peter Lindbergh, who revolutionised fashion photography in the late 1980s. The Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam is putting on a superb retrospective of his work. Get ready for a close-up!

A look back at 40 years of fashion The man himself arrived for the opening of his exhibition without ceremony. Wearing a cap and unremarkable black T-shirt with his mischievous eyes twinkling, Peter Lindbergh, 72, stepped out of his car clearly delighted. Several top models from the 1990s were there to welcome him and they give him a rapturous round of applause. Nadja Auermann, Lara Stone, Milla Jojovich, Tatjana Patitz they had all made a special trip to Rotterdam, because “Pete”, as he is known, is more than just a brilliant photographer, he is a great guy, a true friend. T his war mt h and intensit y immediately comes across in the exhibition, a panorama of 40 years of fashion history, with the earliest images dating from 1978 and the most recent taken for the latest edition of Dutch Vogue. retrospect ive of more than 2 2 0 p hot o s , d i v i d e d i nt o nine t hemes: Super models and Dressmakers, of course, but also Dance and Science Fiction, is a ref lection of all his passions. As a bonus you can a lso see ma sses of his personal notes, storyboards, various Polaroids never before made publ ic a nd excer pt s from interviews and films like the legendary Models, The Film (1991). It is thrilling to see the early career of these aspiring models who he discovered and made famous and who would go on to dominate the 1990s. There are also portrait s of celebrities like Madonna or famous choreographers such as Pina Bausch and Bianca Li, photoshoots for the most prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Hardper’s Bazaar and advert ising campaig ns for major designers including Armani, Prada, Comme des Garcons and Alaïa.

A trailblazing photographer Born on November 23, 1944 in Lissa in Germany, Peter grew up in Duisburg. As a teenager, already an aesthete at heart, he began work as a window dresser for the K arstadt department stores before enrolling at the School of Fine Arts in Berlin in the early 1960s. He remembers this time with some amusement: “I preferred actively seeking the inspiration of Van Gogh, my idol, rather than painting t he ma nd ator y por t r a it s and landscapes taught in art schools.” Inspired by the work of the Dutch painter, he then moved to Arles for a year, before going off on his adventures in Spain and North Africa. When he returned to Germany, he enrolled at the College of Art in K refeld where he studied abstract art. Inf luenced by the Conceptual movement, he began exhibiting his work in various well-known avant-garde galleries, before he had even

graduated! In 1971, he began to take an interest in photography and became assistant to the German photographer Hans Lu x in Dü s seldor f, before opening his ow n studio in 1973. His popularity soared so it was a natural progression to join the photographic team a t t he G er m a n m a g a z i ne Stern alongside such legends as Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. In 1978, he moved to Par is. A nd so began an international career in fashion photography w ith the most luxurious magazines (Vogue, Vanit y Fair et c) a s wel l a s working with the biggest names in the fashion world like Dior and Armani.

Towards a new realism It was a photo taken in 1988 on a Malibu beach that would make history. Peter Lindbergh took six young models who were just starting out, dressed

simply in a large, white, man’s shirt, and asked them to look natural. The editor of Vogue who had ordered the pictures threw them away; not enough hair and not enough make-up for the glamour of the time … It was Anna Wintour who found the picture and loved it! In the photo were Estelle Lefebure, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz! The rest is history. Peter would go on to rewrite the rules of fashion photography. His style was mainly portrait, in black and white, w it h a particular indefinable texture which made the models even more beautiful. There is very little make-up or artifice, he loves the natural look. “I don’t retouch anything,” he said. His work is an ode to femininity and to timeless beauty. He loves to shoot outside in the street or on the beach, bringing the world of luxur y face to face with everyday life. Something else which was new for the time

was his love of unusual places such as abandoned factories or p or t s , a g a i n b r e a k i n g out of the confined world of fashion. His pictures also draw inspiration from the German Expressionism of the 1920s and the shots of the 1950s and they would be seen around the world. Peter Lindbergh has won many prizes and is also the first photographer to work on the Pirelli calendar three times. It’s a record he still holds!

A Fruitful Season for

Éric Frechon With a brand new book and a shiny new Michelin star to his name, this autumn has indeed proved a “season of fruitfulness” for top chef, Éric Frechon. While his eponymous book may not fit on your kitchen work top and not everyone can treat themselves to the culinary delights of London’s Lanesborough Hotel, there are plenty of other ways to sample Éric Frechon’s immense talent. By Samantha King - Photos © Benoit Linero

A

n English polit ician famously made himself unpopular by urging the unemployed to “get on their bikes” and find a job. For Éric Frechon, it was the other way round; it was in order to buy a bike that, aged 13, he found himself working in a professional kitchen for the first time. It was love at first sight. At 17 he headed to Paris and began learning the trade in some of its finest restaurants before mov ing to Spain to explore Mediterranean cuisine. By 1988 he was back in the French capital and in 1999 he was offered the post of head chef at the Hôtel Le Bristol where he had worked years earlier as an apprentice. A t t he t i me, L e B r i s t ol ’s Epicure restaurant had one Michelin star to its name – within two years Éric Frechon had earned it its second and in 2009 it received a third, the ultimate consecration for any chef. The chef’s empire now lists seven establishments; in Paris they i nclude t he v a r iou s eateries of L e Br i stol a nd a l so t he M ini Pa la is and t he Lazare, a bistro-style restaurant at the Saint Lazare train station. And, just to prove Éric

150

Frechon has not been resting on his laurels since that third st ar at the Epicure, he has also turned around fine dini ng at t he L a ne sb orough, one of the smartest hotels in London. The chef opened the Céleste restaurant there in 2015 and has been busy combining

French know-how with the international inspiration London has to offer. That work has paid off as the Céleste has just been awarded its first Michelin star. Meanwhile, back in Paris,

the new ideas just keep coming. The chef ’s headline-making dish at Epicure features a leek grilled for 25 minutes until the outside is burned to a cinder! However, the flesh inside is delicious, especially with the oyster, spring onion and lemon tartar accompaniment.

And then there is the Lazare where Éric Frechon decided a new take was needed on the recent French craze for brunches. On Sundays he now offers customers a Grandma’s Sun-

day lunch – a menu packed with childhood memories but w it h a modern t w ist, naturally. And, like the rest of the Lazare’s menu, the price (€39 for three courses) is far more accessible. The idea should come as no surprise to friends and associates; asked what his greatest inspiration was, Éric Frechon replied: “The past: I like collecting ancient cookbooks. It is on the past that you can build the future.” We mere mortals can seek our inspiration however in a brand new cookbook. In October Éric Frechon released his first work in three years. The 160page opus contains 60 recipes, some classics and some not so well-known. It is more likely to adorn your coffee table than your kitchen workshop, not only because of its size but also because you would not want to risk splashing passata on any of the illustrations – the combination of Benoît Linero behind the camera and Charlotte de la Grandière as stylist makes them true works of art. In his own words, this book contains his vision of a cuisine that is “rigorous, tasty, creative, enthusiastic, free and emancipated”. It is certainly a feast for the eyes!

F

ashions are notoriously hard to predict – who would have thought Hollywood A-listers such as Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman would st art a knitting craze? And now cuttingedge artists both sides of the Atlantic are making taxidermy cool again. Yes, t a xider my. Meanwhile cabinets of curiosity are popping up everywhere from Christian Louboutin’s NYC window dressing to top London art galleries. Of course t his is no sur pr ise to Deyrolle, master of both those arts for 185 years … Step inside the legendary Paris store. By Samantha King

There is something magical about 46, rue du Bac in Paris’s 7th district. Those entering for the first time stare wide-eyed and open-mout hed a s t hey take in the array of fascinating and fantastical objects; stuffed

creatures of all kinds sit atop dark wood cabinets while glass casings filled with even more wonders stand proud against the walls. It is as if one has stepped back in time to a bygone era of intrepid explorers as you come face to face with lions and tigers and bears – oh my! Deyrolle indeed opened back in 1831, just as the rage for exploration and collections was getting under way. But the shop is also bang up to date, having been virtually entirely rebuilt and restocked after a devastating fire in 2008 claimed the building and millions of exhibits. The surge in public support in the wake of that fire helped r a ise t he f und s needed to restore the building and replace the antique glass display cabinets. That support was indicative of the renewed interest in the delights Deyrolle has been consistently offering for almost two centuries, especially two of its main themes: taxidermy and cabinets of curiosity. From Paris to New York these are now the height of fashion once

more. In October, Elle magazine devoted an article to the trend under the headline “How Taxidermy Became Cool Again”. Naturally, it referenced Deyrolle as well as new taxidermy stars such as London-based artist Polly Morgan whose works sell for thousands of euros and Jazmine Miles-Long, an ethical taxidermist from the south of England whose vegetarianism prompts her to work solely on animals that have died of natural causes. In France, we could cite Sylvain Wavrant, very much an up-andcoming artist who also adapts t a x ider my to t he t heat re, creating unusual costumes. Ju st a c ro s s t he b order i n Belgium we find Jeroen Lemaître who has been exploring the possibilities of taxidermy for three years now and whose butterf ly tableaux are hugely popular. And then there are the cabinets of curiosity which Deyrolle makes to order for individual customers. Back in New York City, these provide the inspiration for Christian Louboutin’s 2016 Christmas window

display at the legendary Sak’s Fifth Avenue while American artist Mark Dion created a three storey high cabinet for Vassar University and has had similar commissions for New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate Gallery. And architects of Hungary’s first Ritz-Carlton in Budapest which opened in April also included a cabinet of curiosit ies, showca sing fa mous Hungarian inventions such as the Bic pen and the Rubik’s cube. As if that wasn’t enough, Cirque du Soleil, the ultimate circus, has named its latest show Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosity while at Versailles, the head pastry chef at the Trianon Palace, Eddie Benghanem, says the poetry of Deyrolle inspired his Christmas log design for this year which he has called “Butterflies Flying Away”. From food to fashion, from the stage floor to the shop window, on a high wire and in your home, Deyrolle continues to provide inspiration for artists of all kinds and its influence is as prevalent now as it ever was.

The other famous name from the designer’s early days is that of Vacheron Constantin. Yoann Goncalves redesigned boutiques for the brand, designing the cushions using rich materials and harmonious shapes that enhance the prestige and “well-being” of the Swiss luxury watchmaking house … A meeting, a striking result … and a partnership that continues today. A s a true creator and artist, Yoann Goncalves designs projects which are more and more astonishing and his future achievements are set to continue this reputation; the designer’s next task is the delicate handling of silica beads between leather and shagreen mineral. By using the highest quality materials, which are

He w ill also produce sketches for the Hôtel Byblos, telling the story of the St Tropez Palace between “Provence and the French Riviera”, as well as designs that will be embroidered on the silk squares of the Maison Noreve label. Continuing his partnership in the future with the first “Yoann Goncalves” followers, the designer is also designing and making the next gilet for Patek Philippe. Three new projects will also be launched in January 2017 for the prestigious watchmaking brand Vacheron Constantin: designing polo shirts emblazoned with the brand’s logo, but also weaving rugs that are as luxurious as the reputation of this “Eternal Manufacturer”, as well as designing the next Vacheron Constantin down jacket. With his pure talent, Yoann Goncalves is an enthusiast whose work answers every desire and shines across the world, produced by the hand of a master. He is a true perfectionist, whose creations promise glorious days ahead for brand designs and their products …

Winestar

Another way of drinking wine!

W

ine is one of the greatest things about French culture. The latest trend is for wine in cans. Winestar is a 100% French design concept combining innovation and quality. Could the future of wine be in the can?

A quality wine in a new wine can

By Quitterie Pasquesoone

A popular trend

A concept in tune with our times At a time when society is constantly on the move, the nomadic lifestyle, a product of modern times, is in vogue like never before. However, there is no question of giving up the traditions that shape our culture. Wine is central to that. To meet the high expectations of consumers when it comes to quality, Cedric Segal, a French entrepreneur who is passionate about wine, came up with the idea for Winestar. The concept has for the first time in France put fine wine in cans. It is a different way of consuming wine which is more modern, more practical, more nomadic … but without any concession to quality. It’s a small revolution in the very conservative world of wine.

156

Cedric Segal’s aim with Winestar is to offer lovers of quality wine a high-end vintage which is ready-to-drink and easy to carry around. To achieve this, he met with several well known winemakers looking for the finest wines and suggested putting their awardwinning vintages in Winestar cans. With its unique technology, the wines are perfectly protected from the air, light and humidity and are ready to drink. Winestar takes care of the quality of the wine from the Château to the glass. It’s mainly French wine of course, but soon wines from all regions of the world to suit all tastes and all culinary occasions.

Praised by French people, who like being able to have their wine and drink it however and wherever they wish, Winestar is enjoying growing success, particularly among Parisians who appreciate this simple and modern way of consuming wine. Winestar has become a real trend in Paris and is taken along for aperitifs, picnics and other get-togethers, perfectly embodying the conviviality of French gastronomy; it’s all part of the nomadic lifestyle. It’s definitely a product with a bright future ahead.
