EDITOR’S NOTE

T

he Swiss watchmaker Rebellion, which is always ahead of the field when it comes to timing, continues along its path at full speed. Since 2007, this brand’s destiny has been linked to endurance, particularly the motor racing kind, from the 24 Hours of Le Mans to the 6 Hours of Silverstone. Its precision sporting spirit has led to the creation of stunning models such as the Weap-one or the T-1000. Bruno Senna, Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet Jr wear Rebellions on their wrists. Rebellion’s story is still being written on the race track, especially through its own team, Rebellion Racing, which excels in paddocks the world over. And while Rebellion’s story continues to be told over the years through its sporting achievements, it is also coming up with innovation after innovation through its motto of “no compromise”, combining luxury and performance through the quality of its materials and the subtleties of its Made-in-Switzerland mechanics. A world of performances, decibels and glamour which Blush is proud to showcase in this collector’s issue, upsetting the established order and stamping a new style, without compromise. Happy birthday!

ow do you move from the scientific field to fine watchmaking and then racing? It is possible to go from a scientific, or let’s say industrial, field to watchmaking. It’s fairly easy to do because it’s pretty much the same thing; we use the same machines and the professions are pretty similar. Racing is something completely different. It’s not a business activity but my passion. All these worlds come together because there are links between these three activities.

Your favourite model? I would go for an English car like an Aston Martin for example. You founded Rebellion Racing, the only race team in the field of watchmaking. How do you explain this in relation to a market in which sponsoring is highly competitive? I am still amazed that we were the first watchmaking brand to have our own racing team. As a general rule, watch brands only sponsor such events – perhaps it’s a lack of passion. At Rebellion, we concentrated on what makes up our brand’s DNA: cars and, in particular the 24 Hours of Le Mans which, in my opinion, is the ultimate race.

You run the multinational Lemo, founded by your grand-father Léon Mouttet. What values did he pass on to you? The cult of quality. You graduated from the prestigious EPFL in Lausanne, what did you take from it? After the polytechnic, I went to HEC [now the Geneva School of Economics and Management] in Geneva. So I have more of a business background but with a certain vision. I understand technique but I lean more towards marketing. My father taught me certain values – it’s a family matter. I grew up immersed in all things technical and that was what my family passed on to me. My education gave me a vision and tools.

Where does your love of cars come from? To me, it’s an art form. It’s more the object itself which interests me. I prefer classic cars, the old models rather than recent ones, for the artistic aspect that you still found back then. In a classic car there is the aesthetic beauty of course but there is also the smell, the sound and the pleasure of driving. Rather than having a €50 million painting hanging on my wall I would buy a classic car.

You have been working with Rebellion and Lemo Group for 18 years; if you had to do it all over again would you do anything differently? How do you view you career? No regrets, never (laughs). I tend to say I am fortunate; I have worked hard during my career and it has been quite unusual. I get a lot of recognition for what I do although I don’t put 100% but 200% of effort into my work – so much so that it goes beyond a professional remit. It is more than a passion; it’s my life motto. I am a mechanical engineer and I am incredibly lucky, and many cannot but envy me, because working for a group like Lemo is great. It is an interesting economic model with super technical products. This completely quenches my thirst for technicity.

I am also lucky in that I can share my passion for watchmaking with its owner, Alexandre Pesci. And then the motor racing is the cherry on the cake! I also have an MBA which enables me to have a more business-like approach these days. I am a bit of a Jack-of-alltrades, a bit of an octopus; I am interested in everything and I often need to be made to focus. For me it isn’t speed that matters but endurance.

ebellion Timepieces is now one of the brands that is on the rise. How have you repositioned it? As far as I am concerned, Rebellion has always been in the same position as it is today. However, since Alexandre Pesci took over its management, what has changed in the last three years is that there is now a strategic vision which was perhaps missing at the beginning. We realised that the brand had strayed from its DNA over the years. It was founded on our car racing team before the watchmaking brand came into being. This link with motor sports had disappeared from the posters, from marketing and from events; we were no longer communicating at all about the races or the team. So we decided to reposition Rebellion Timepieces fast to tie in with the notion of motor sports by communicating about the essence of the brand – i.e. that it is a sporty and dynamic brand. By creating strong partnerships, Rebellion has made a name for itself as a watchmaker with sporting connotations.

SWISS FINE WATCHMAKING A TALE OF CHANCE ENCOUNTERS The growth of the Rebellion Timepieces brand owes much to synergy. Alexandre Pesci quickly managed to attract the interest of elite designers such as Eric Giroud, an exceptionally meticulous watch designer. He embraced the chance to explore the technical aspects of mechanics to create models with advanced complications. And Alexandre Pesci, in return, embraced his ongoing quest to combine watchmaking and cars by taking the art of counting the passing of time that bit further down the road. And another encounter beside the racetrack would lead Rebellion to a world record, this time with David Candaux. This movement designer, based in the famous Joux valley, accepted the challenge of creating a completely new complication. The aim was to fit a movement offering a power reserve of 1,000 hours. And so, the T-1000 was born! With its titanium case, its leather strap with folding buckle and a frequency of 18,000 alternations per hour, this model - of which only 100 copies were offered for sale costing around €70,000 a piece - will hold the record for quite some time. The secret lies in its tiny chain which supplies energy to the six mainspring barrels placed on each side of the movement. The Gotham also includes this system but stands out through its more robust and powerful look and its winder arm on the top of the watch. Rebellion Timepieces remains firmly on its self-imposed path and its anti-conformism is evident in the size of its watches, the materials used, the marketing and the decision to work with highly-skilled people such as Laurent Besse, the engineer involved in perfecting the Tourbillon and the Regulator.

THE PLEASURE OF PERPETUAL INNOVATION The man behind Rebellion is Alexandre Pesci, CEO of Lemo, one of the world’s leading precision connector companies. Founded by his grandfather, Léon Mouttet and employing 1,650 people worldwide, Lemo is famous for having invented the push-pull self-latching system in 1957. But Alexandre Pesci is also an endurance motor racing enthusiast and the owner of a Speedy garage in Lausanne. It was only natural then for him to get involved in competitive racing, taking part in the Le Mans Series (GT2 category) in 2007, at the wheel of a Spyker C8 Spyder. Renamed Rebellion Racing in 2010, the team which developed its own chassis has notched up some impressive wins, especially in 2011 and 2012, in the independent team category at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Out of this passion for cars, grew a desire in Alexandre Pesci to found his own watchmaking company with Steve Clerici. The initial aim was not to turn a profit in the short term but to create a lasting brand. The first real outing was at Basel with the presentation of five, square-shaped models, manufactured in a record time of 12 months, complete with chronograph, column-wheel chronograph, triple GMT with a jumping-hour, power reserve and tourbillon. After getting off to such a flying start, the company followed up with round models. But their automobile DNA still came through strongly in the super-sized cases, robust yet refined design styles, deep five-level faces with honeycomb bases displaying the movement and rods decorated with centrepiece rubies.

A HIGH TECH SWISS WATCH COMPANY SUMMED UP IN A FEW MODELS The link between racing cars and time-keepers has not diminished with the various models designed in recent years. It is impossible not to mention the 540 Magnum Tourbillon – launched as a limited series of just 10 in 2013 – given how much it embodies the endurance of the automobile with its 14-day power reserve, its carbon fibre case, its extra-large ceramicised magnesium tourbillon and its light yet sturdy structure. In the same vein, the Predator 2.0, limited to 30 copies, includes a minute hand carved like a brake pad and a stirrup. In 2017 the watch named as its ambassador the French swimmer Camille Lacourt, five times world champion in the pool, now testing the waters behind the wheel. This watch is highly customisable and comes in four combinations with minute and changeable details. Another example is the automatic Twenty-One, inspired by the steering wheels and dashboards of classic cars from the 1930s. This unique timepiece was officially presented at Baselworld 2017 where it shined thanks to its cushion-shaped case and its rotor reminiscent of the wheel rims of a racing car.

SAGA

SPORTING PARTNERSHIPS AT THE HEART OF THE WATCHMAKER’S STRATEGY And the revolving door between the motor racing world and that of watchmaking is not slamming shut after this decade; quite the contrary. Rebellion Timepieces has become close to the Danish hypercar maker Zenvo. This partnership began with the design of a special Predator 2.0 model as a limited edition and also with the two firms sharing data, engineering and testing. Another collaboration sees Rebellion Timepieces teaming up with Vaillante, the brand running the Michel Vaillant comics. In a special Formula E album, the hero drives a Rebellion. This led to the idea of changing the Rebellion Racing name to Vaillante Rebellion for the 24 Hours of Le Mans with famous drivers at the wheel including Nicolas Prost, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Bruno Senna. As for Nick Heidfeld, Mathias Beche and Gustavo Menezes, they came together as a trio for the Petit Le Mans, during which the No. 13 Oreca 07 would be painted yellow in reference to the colour of the watch donated to the Only Watch 2017 charity auction on November 11, 2017 in Geneva. Rebellion Timepiece contributed its one-off Predator 2.0 Regulator Sébastien Buemi. Proceeds from the biennial auction go to research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The Rebellion brand is now looking to explore new pastures such as jewellery through a partnership agreed last June with Roland Iten, a Swiss pioneer in fine jewellery for men. The partnership was announced during the 85th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, direct from the race track of course!

efore getting into motor racing, Nicolas played golf until he got his handicap down to just 2. Whatever the sport, playing among the elite requires the right attitude. “I also did a lot of skiing! Each sport has its differences but they all have things in common too: coping with difficult times and moments of doubt, never giving up, not cracking under pressure...” To stay focussed for example, Nicolas uses a simple method. “I repeat to myself the need to keep concentrated.” He first stepped into a single-seater at the age of 22. Why so late? Apparently, talent is not a matter of chance. It didn’t descend on Nicolas, who had never driven, until the day his parents offered him a day at the race track to congratulate him on his good exam results. As he puts it: “Initially, I hadn’t chosen a career in motor sports. I tried it for the first time because it was a gift from my mother and father for having finished university a year early. They both thought I would “take it easy” because I’d barely driven before! The problem was that by the end of the day I was faster than the driver who’d been last year’s champion. That was the start of it all.” Then he adds: “Motor sport was a revelation, it was more than obvious.” Nicolas Prost has also won national titles in golf, skiing and football. “For me it’s sport in general that’s obvious,” he says. Asked whether he has any limits he replies: “It’s difficult to give you an example but I think I’m capable of taking things really far. I raced with a detached pleura so that’s not bad as a pain threshold.” As for determination, it doesn’t show itself in a moment of madness. Quite the contrary as Nicolas explains: “Determination is every day; it’s cycling in the wind or the snow and always training with the same goal.” We don’t choose our families and having Prost as a surname can be just as much a brake as an accelerator. For Nicolas, it’s 50/50. “Of course it opens doors and generates interest. But it closes other doors and it’s difficult to be really acknowledged 100%.” Sport is at the core of his life. And yet, according to Nicolas, only at the highest level is talent revealed and fulfilment achieved. “It’s easy to be a local champion but when you reach the top, that’s when things get really hard,” he says. While failure is still his only fear, performance and results are his main driving forces. For Nicolas, danger is not a source of adrenalin but the opposite. He admits to us that it is important to know your limits and to know which ones you should not exceed. Go fast – yes. Foot down without thinking – absolutely not.

hat excites Bruno Senna most in motor sports is the quest for perfection and a taste for a constant challenge. “With each lap of the track I try to improve,” he says. The same desire to progress is to be found in the team. “I like working with the engineers to see what we can improve,” says Bruno.
He was just 5 when he first had a go at karting. “I have evidently gained a different vision from those who didn’t grow up with this sport and passion was born in me then and never left me. When I lost the support of my family as a result I stopped for quite a few years, but life can take unexpected turns.” In the beginning, Bruno’s surname was a handicap to such an extent he had no freedom. “It was very difficult to bear my name at the start because there was so much interest in me,” he explains. “Usually, a young driver has to progress and prove themselves before people take an interest. All the errors of my youth went public and my skills were always compared to those of my uncle who was world champion three times. People expected miraculous results from me which may have made me doubt myself at one time.” As he grew up, the surname made him stronger and less vulnerable. And he makes no bones about the fact “the surname Senna does help in attracting sponsors and securing new partnerships”. Determination is essential to any top-flight athlete. Bruno explains: “A sporting career requires a lot of sacrifices and a strong mental attitude both when you win and when you lose, especially since you lose more often than you win. But our best moments become engraved in us and carry us forward.” As with everything else, sport has its good sides and its bad. But it is not a school like any other. “The most important thing you learn in sport is the impact your career has on others. Even individual sports require a collective effort which enables people to learn to work together to achieve victory.” It is important to have self-confidence and not to fear failure. These are the values his parents passed on to him and self-confidence remains key. “In my family we have a few basic values which define much of what we do. We always try to remain humble, to respect others, to try to do our best, to fight for what we believe in and to be close to those around us,” says Bruno. In life, Bruno would like to slow things down a little, especially given his professional life is full of trips and long-haul flights. While he admits he’s still young enough to live in top gear, he is looking to the future. “When I have a family, my priority will be to be close to them,” he explained. “I want to be part of my children’s lives.” And he also admits he would advise them to take up golf – it’s a lot less stressful! While adrenalin is evidently linked to risk, you always have to be very clear about what you are doing. “I have never been afraid of having an accident while I’m behind the wheel. I think about all the work the team has put in and about how much time would be wasted if I drove the car into a wall. Obviously some accidents can leave us with bodily damage so it’s important to learn to go ahead with that.” Rational and lucid, Bruno does admit to one fear; “I’m afraid of having regrets and making the wrong choice. I try, as much as possible, to think clearly. If I make a mistake, I leave that memory behind me and move on.”

He explains: “Like breathing, eating and sleeping, it is vital to me and racing as much as possible is obvious.” Nelson spends his days off at the track; “That’s where I’m happiest,” he adds. When he was in the classroom, Nelson only had one thought in his mind: when could he get back to the track? “At home, the television is always showing a car race. When I was in the United States I loved watching Nascar races for instance,” he says. Sports cars were at the heart of his education and part of every day life in the Piquet family. “We are a family of drivers,” explains Nelson. “Of course there is my father who passed this passion on to me in me childhood. There is also my brother Pedro who drives a single-seater. I have another brother in a Brazilian team and another who rides a motorbike.” When he goes back to the family home, he says, “trophies, helmets and photographs have pride of place throughout the house”. So it was completely natural that his father took him to the race track when he was a small child. He began karting at the age of 8 but his career really got going when he began racing in F3, in his first single-seater in South America. Then, aged 16, he went off to live in England and take part in the British F3 championship. What importance does he attach to his surname? “From the moment I moved to Europe, my father hasn’t been much involved in my career,” he says. “Being a race car driver is more than a job; you have to be passionate about it to succeed,” says Nelson who also believes motor racing is about much more than driving. “There is all the work with the team, all those ‘on the sides’; this is 100% a team sport. You absolutely have to work together to win.” Over time, Nelson has learned to manage the business and marketing aspects that surround motor sports. “These are special skills that also are of benefit to me in every day life,” he says. Risk and adrenalin were part of his education to such a point that Nelson only feels really at home in a car. “For me it’s the one place on Earth where I feel most calm and at peace,” he admits.

24 HOURS OF LE MANS

ALEXANDRE PESCI’S DREAM COME TRUE

PA S S I O N F 1

The history of Rebellion Racing cannot but go hand in hand with that of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This race, which lasts a full day, is one of the three most prestigious motorsports events in the world. It has been going since 1923 and the 24-hour format has generated some famous copies around the globe including Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps, Bathurst and, of course, Daytona. Since 2012, this showpiece event has been added to the FIA World Endurance Cup calendar, the concept behind it being the root of the American Le Mans and Le Mans Series championships. And at all these competitions you will find the independent Rebellion Racing team there on the starting grid, taking on the biggest constructors. This unbreakable bond that links the brand to the world of endurance motor sport arises from the passion that drives the team’s founder, Alexandre Pesci. He runs Lemo, a company very much involved in Formula E and also in Formula 1 because of the connectors it makes and the various components now included in the design of sports cars’ engines and bodies. The owner of Speedy garage, Alexandre Pesci took part in the Le Mans Series in 2007 at the wheel of a Spyker C8 Spyder. He finished in 5th place in the LMGT2 category. His hard work paid off the very next year with an invitation from the organisers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Speedy Racing joined forces with Sebah Racing at this point and the independent team signed up for the Le Mans Series as well as taking part in the legendary race itself.

REBELLION RACING

AN INDEPENDENT TEAM THAT TAKES ON THE BIG GUNS

In 2012, with sponsoring from Lotus, Rebellion Racing repeated its performance and made it to the foot of the podium at the 24 Hours – a feat through which it shattered the domination of the constructor Audi which had reigned supreme up to that point. That same season, Rebellion Racing lifted the FIA Endurance trophy in the LMP1 category as the best independent team. The following years were also notable for great results, as LMP1 independent team winner in 2014 (LMP1-L), 2015 and 2016. The team comprising Nicolas Prost, Nick Heidfeld and Mathias Beche even offered themselves a fantastic 4th place in the overall standings in 2014.

2017

VAILLANTE-REBELLION, AN EMBLEMATIC PROJECT FOR THE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS

Rebellion Racing’s participation in the 2017 race was wrapped in a project totally in keeping with the company’s values. The idea first began on a Formula E circuit – what about combining the comic book hero Michel Vaillant with Team Rebellion? This partnership is a tribute to the 60 years of this comic strip about a racing driver with an imaginary French team, first created back in 1957 by Jean Graton. The challenge of having two real-life Vaillantes cars racing on the track in Sarthe for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 category was one that delighted Alexandre Pesci and his staff. Indeed, the businessman declared: “To race our cars in Michel Vaillant’s colours was a chance not to be missed. It reminded me of the comic books I read as a boy.” And, ever one to be bolder than bold, he continued: “We were able to work on the design with Vaillant’s bosses. I really liked the end result and it should create a buzz. In French-speaking countries, the name Vaillant still rings a bell!” Last June, the challenge passed into the hands of the experienced trio of Nicolas Prost, Bruno Senna and Nelson Piquet Jr. Third place was within their grasp and then unfortunately snatched away due to a disqualification for technical reasons. It was a storyline that even those penning the Michel Vaillant comics would not have dreamt of!

2009 saw the first win for the team in the LMP2 category at the 1,000 km at Silverstone. It was after this victory that the team decided to put its No. 13 in for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2010, Speedy Racing Team Sebah became Rebellion Racing and once again signed up for the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours. But one of the golden ages of Alexandre Pesci’s team would be from 2011 to 2014 during a partnership agreed with Toyota. Thanks to the Toyota V8 engine, Rebellion Racing scooped team and constructor prizes during the Le Mans Series and finished 6th with a 1st for its petrol car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

oth Swiss firm Rebellion and Danish company Zenvo, are masters in their own fields – the former in making unique timepieces inspired by sportscars and the latter in producing hypercars that break the mould in every way. The two share so many core values, a partnership just seemed to make sense, with a pooling of technology, data and testing. They celebrated their partnership in typical style by turning up at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show 2017 with a time and tyre combo of a one-off Predator 2.0 GMT Zenvo Edition watch alongside a one-off, tenth anniversary car, the TS1 GT. The racing-inspired,

dual time-zone watch features a dial adorned with a brake and a calliper hour hand. As part of the partnership, Rebellion Timepieces is developing a new watch model and timing instrumentation for Zenvo Automotive’s supercars. The link up also extends into technical collaboration with Rebellion Racing, including shared engineering capabilities. Zenvo Automotive produces high performance supercars. Like Rebellion Timepieces, it is driven by a desire to produce highly customisable, limited edition products made with the best automotive technologies, innovation and human attention to detail.

Nigel Gordon-Stewart, Global Commercial Director of Zenvo Automotive, commented: “We are thrilled about this partnership with Rebellion. I’ve admired their brand and their ability to just get out there and take on the big boys on the track. Their watch mechanics are really impressive and we are looking forward to utilising their savoir-faire to provide our cars with very high-precision clocks and timing equipment.” What caught Rebellion’s eye at Zenvo was the company’s engineering and design intelligence and the conviction the collaboration could be a huge asset both to Rebellion’s watchmaking activity and its motor racing ventures.

HE INDEPENDENT TEAM CHALLENGING THE MAJOR CONSTRUCTORS Rebellion Racing is a private team – the result of an association between Speedy Racing and Sebah Racing with Alexandre Pesci completing the deal in 2008. This automobile racing and driving enthusiast, who is also the CEO of Lemo, immediately rejected the role of simple figurehead. The result is that since 2011, Rebellion Racing has been the only team able to contest the domination of major constructors of the likes of Audi, Toyota, Porsche and Peugeot in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Rebellion Racing achieved 4th place in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012 and 2014. The team has made it onto the FIA WEC podium four times, including in two consecutive races at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps in 2016. The overall results for the 2011-2016 period are highly impressive with five consecutive titles picked up in the privateer LMP-1 FIA WEC.

DRIVERS OF INTERNATIONAL STANDING It’s not just Rebellion’s cars that are competitive. The choice of drivers is also a key part of success so the team has placed its faith in celebrated champions, some of whom have also spent time on the Formula 1 circuit. The roll call includes Sébastien Buemi, Nick Heidfeld, Neel Jani, Nicolas Prost, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Bruno Senna. The Swiss driver was part of this adventure for five years before moving on to the Vaillante Rebellion Powered by Motul project in 2017. Its Oreca 07 No.13, backed by a team comprising Nelson Piquet Jr., Mathias Beche and David Heinemier-Hansson, took the chequered flag in 3rd place at the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans. Although the car was later disqualified, the Vaillante Rebellion displays all the audaciousness of a private team – it managed to put a Vaillante Rebellion on the starting grid just as a new Michel Vaillant comic book came out with the hero at the wheel of a Rebellion, naturally. This again was the result of a timely encounter during a Formula E event in Paris where the idea was sketched out. In September 2016, the design of a 600 cv racing car was completed and two Vaillante Rebellions (No.13 and No.31) were launched at Le Mans just a few months later! More recently, Vaillante Rebellion Oreca 07 Gibsons finished 6th (Bèche, Heinemier-Hansson, Nelson Piquet Jr) and 7th (Canal, Prost, Senna) at the FIA WEC’s “6 Hours of COTA” (Circuit of the Americas) on September 14-16, 2017. The schedule after that was a busy one with Japan on October 15 and the “6 Hours of Fuji”, China and the “6 Hours of Shanghai” on November 5 and finally, on November 18, the “6 Hours of Bahrain”.

014 WEC CHAMPION AND WINNER OF LAST YEAR’S FORMULA E, SÉBASTIEN BUEMI HAS CAPITALISED ON THE SOLID EXPERIENCE HE ACQUIRED IN FORMULA 1 WITH TEAMS LIKE TORO ROSSO AND RED BULL RACING. THIS CHILD FROM THE SWISS CANTON OF VAUD, BORN IN 1988, IS WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST SWISS DRIVERS WE HAVE SEEN FOR MANY YEARS. TO DATE HE HAS DRIVEN IN MORE THAN 280 RACES INCLUDING SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS ONES OF THE CIRCUIT. HE HAS MADE IT TO THE PODIUM A HUNDRED TIMES AND TAKEN THE CHEQUERED FLAG 39 TIMES. SO WHEN HE TURNED HIS SIGHTS TO ENDURANCE RACING IN 2012, HE NATURALLY RAN INTO THE SWISS OUTFIT REBELLION. AS ALEXANDRE PESCI’S TEAM CELEBRATES ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY, SÉBASTIEN BUEMI TELLS US ABOUT HIS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. LAURE DELVIGO How did you meet the Rebellion team? I had known them for quite a few years. The Swiss motor sports world is small and when I started out in endurance in 2012, I met Alexandre Pesci and the Rebellion team straight away. FIA World Endurance Champion and Formula E World Champion, what was your best race? It’s hard to answer that. Endurance races are more team races than Formula E. A victory in endurance is more a shared one. My best victories are obviously winning the WEC in 2014 and the Formula E title in 2016. Which do you think is the best discipline to go for to succeed? I think endurance is a really great platform for young drivers. And there are more places than in Formula E. I really get a lot of pleasure out of racing in WEC Is speed part of your daily life away from the track? I’m really careful about how I drive on the road. There’s nothing to win. Otherwise my life is very fast-paced; I take a plane more than 100 times a year and never spend more than four days in the same place. It requires a lot of organisation. Rebellion is celebrating its 10th birthday; do you have a birthday message? I wish it lots of success of course! I had the chance to take part in two races with the team this year. I hope we will be able to join forces in more races in the future.

he final race was in Bahrain and started with Bruno Senna and David Heinemeier Hansson driving the two Vaillante REBELLION Oreca 07s, No31 and No13. It was a battle from the outset given how high the stakes were. No31 was to be locked in a nipand-tuck race with Jackie Chan DC Racing’s No38 from start to finish in the fight for the LMP2 World Champion title. Team Manager Bart Hayden described the tension in the Vaillante REBELLION paddock: “What an intense race and season! For much of this race I thought that the No38 car was looking like they were going to win, but when we observed that they were having trouble getting a full stint from their fuel tank, we saw the opportunity.” That optimism was almost dashed when, just 45 minutes from the end of the six-hour race, No31’s last driver, Bruno Senna, reported a problem with the power steering. “We suddenly thought that fate was going to twist again,” explained Bart Hayden. “But, through sheer will and determination, Bruno brought the car home to win and it’s a truly fantastic result.” As with any race, rankings were gained and lost and a 5-second penalty for a minor contact was picked up by the No31 during Julien Canal’s stint behind the wheel. That caused him concern. “After my stint I was not really confident for the win today,” he admitted. “But after the amazing job of my two teammates, I changed my mind! I really want to thank theses guys. Nico [Nicolas Prost] and Bruno did a really good job.

They increased my sense of competition, my team spirit and my performances on track. We worked a lot this year and I want to thank all the team!” Meanwhile, No13 was also struggling as Mathias Beche explained. He had worked hard to pull the car up from 8th place into 2nd place and, at the finish line, came in 3rd to make it a Vaillante REBELLION double on the podium. “During my last three stints we had a small mechanical problem and the car was extremely difficult to drive. I just did not have the pace to go in front,” he explained. “I really gave everything to come back but it was not possible. Finishing with a podium in such a competitive category remains a very good result.” Endurance is very much a team competition and all the drivers paid tribute to the mechanics and technical staff in the paddock who gave them so much support. “The team did an exceptional job,” said Bruno Senna. “Everybody improved their job; mechanics, engineers and all the drivers. We all became stronger all along the season. It really changed during the overseas part of the season. I want to thank all these guys who were extraordinary. Winning this championship is an amazing feeling!” And, true to the team spirit of fair play, Bart Hayden added: “Hats off to the Jota Jackie Chan DC Racing car No38 guys, they made a real fight of it. Winning the Championship in the face of strong competition makes the result taste even sweeter.”

Rebellion displayed vision when it came to drivers for the two Oreca 07s for its FIA WEC campaign in the tricky LMP2 category. Friends for years, it seemed only natural that Julien Canal should join Nicolas Prost and Bruno Senna and share their bucket seat. Strong personal ties are at the heart of Rebellion Racing’s identity. And such ties produce results since the Vaillante team won the Endurance World Championship. After four years in FIA WEC, David Heinemeier Hansson will begin his fifth FIA season and his sixth 24 Hours of Le Mans at the wheel of a Rebellion Racing car. Renowned for his fighting spirit and his rebellious character, Nick Heidfeld will also take part in the Rebellion adventure, in particular defending the team’s colours at the Petit Le Mans.

THE PREDATOR

2.0

COMING IN THREE MODELS AND OFFERING THREE IN-HOUSE MOVEMENTS, REBELLION TIMEPIECES’ PREDATOR 2.0 SERIES HAS BEEN WINNING ACCOLADES ALL ROUND. THE SWISS WATCHMAKERS MANAGE, YET AGAIN, TO COMBINE TECHNICAL PROWESS WITH AN INIMITABLE STYLE TO THE DELIGHT OF LOVERS OF FINE TIMEKEEPERS.

T

he Predator 2.0 series updates the original Predator, offering yet more innovation. It comes in three versions: GMT Regulator Power Reserve and Regulator Tourbillon and has already spawned special versions to mark tie-ins with Rebellion’s partners. As ever, the company fuses racing technology and aesthetics in these quality timepieces. The Regulator Power Reserve’s in-house movement is based on a self-winding motor while looking into the watch’s sapphire glass is like peering into a race car. The dashboard exhibits two subdials displaying hours and minutes while the newly developed REB-AMS bent hand rotates to mark the seconds. And at 6 o’clock a special fuel gauge lets you know how much of the 46-hour power reserve remains. The Predator 2.0 Regulator Tourbillon comes as a 30-piece,

limited edition. It is named after its in-house movement, the P351 self-winding Regulator Tourbillon. Located at 6 o’clock and encased in a 60-second rotating cage, this offsets any disruption caused by Earth’s gravity, resulting in superb accuracy. The date is displayed through a window at 4 o’clock and you will also find the sub-dials and REB-AMS seconds hand included in the Regulator Power Reserve. The Regulator Tourbillon has the biggest power reserve of this series at 65 hours. The Predator 2.0 GMT is a 25-piece, limited edition watch named for its distinctive 24-hour GMT time-zone indicator. The watch’s inner-workings are visible through the sapphire case and the display is directly inspired by race car brakes with a unique hour hand comprising a rotating disc and red calliper. Here the racing-inspired REB-AMS hand is for minutes.

NEW ERA

SERIES TAKING REBELLION TIMEPIECES INTO A NEW ERA

FOCUS

TWENTY-ONE A

t first glance, Rebellion Timepieces’ TwentyOne looks relatively classic by Rebellion standards – but then there had to be a twist! Launched during Baselworld’s press day, the inspiration for the Twenty-One was the steering-wheels of classic cars from the 1930s such as the 1935 Packard One-Twenty. And that is why it is the case that turns around the hour and seconds hands to display the time rather than the other way around. Rebellion’s first automatic, in-house GMT movement comes in a classic cushion case and features a two-spoke steering-wheel design with Rebellion-

logoed horn shroud. Equipped with a GMT indicator, balance wheel, hour disc, minute hand and seconds subdial, the Twenty-One’s complex construction remains in constant motion. Like the dashboard of a classic car, the Twenty-One’s dial peeks out from behind its steering-wheel design. The balance wheel at 12 o’clock and the seconds subdial with propeller hand at 4 o’clock are static, leaving all the work to their rotating discs which move the correct time smoothly into place. The minutes are indicated by a traditional, rotating hand. The clasp fastening the strap features millimetric adjustment. The Twenty-One comes

REBELLION MAGAZINE 70

with a power reserve of 42 hours and is priced to catch a new set of customers. The echoes of steering wheels and wheel trims clearly mark the TwentyOne as a Rebellion timepiece, very much in line with the Swiss company’s involvement in endurance motorsports such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But its more classical look – this is a timekeeper as at home in the boardroom as on the race track - and more accessible price tag really should attract new clients to a brand that just keeps coming up with innovations time and time again.

WEAP-ONE T

he new Weap-One unique watch from Rebellion Timepieces is pronounced similar to the word “weapon” and it certainly is armed to the teeth. Aside from the highly original design – in this case “unique” does not simply refer to the number of copies made - it also features a never-before-seen, asymmetrical, 60-second flying tourbillon movement. This tourbillon is attached to two plates and suspended between the hour and minute rollers. Each plate rotates at a different speed, resulting in a non-stationary horizontal axis – the first of its kind. The man behind the design is Fabrice Gonet and the watch was made in collaboration with Concepto.

The movement is housed in a detachable sapphire crystal tube which offers maximum viewing and countless mounting options. As you would expect with any Rebellion watch, the Weap-One included several pieces of racing technology. For example, the rollers and tourbillon-mounted plates rotate at varying speeds like the wheels of a race car. To compensate for this difference in speeds, the movement was developed with two differentials modelled after those found in race car suspensions. Ten ball bearings have replaced jewels in this piece for additional reduction in rotational friction as well as radial and axil loads. Two rollers read the time- hours on the

REBELLION MAGAZINE 72

left and minutes on the right. The numbers and indexes are treated with Super-LumiNova® to ensure ease of readability day or night. Finishing the piece is a dual crown system - mounted on either side of the movement and fashioned after wheel nuts – the left sets the time while the right winds the 50-hour power reserve. Presented for the first time at Baselworld, the Weap-One certainly wowed the critics. And the icing on the cake? This watch won’t just look good on your wrist – it can be removed from the strap and used as a desk clock or mounted on your car’s dashboard.

REBELLION PARTNERING THE ONLY WATCH CHARITY AUCTION AGAIN

CHARITY

O

nly Watch is an auction of one-off luxury watches with proceeds going to scientific and medical research into neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The initiative for the biennial event comes from none other than His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco and Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies (Monaco Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) since 2005. Only Watch asks major watchmakers to donate unique timepieces to be auctioned and this approach has already raised €25 million. The seventh edition of Only Watch took place on November 11 in Geneva and was preceded, as usual, by a promotional world tour during which enthusiasts could admire the collection before it went under the hammer. This is the second, consecutive time Rebellion Timepieces has got involved. In 2015, the watchmakers donated a oneoff REB-7 which Nicolas Prost wore at the wheel during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For 2017, Rebellion offered a version of the

Predator 2.0 Power Reserve designed by Sébastien Buemi. The FIA World Endurance Champion stamped his mark on the watch by inlaying flecks of yellow – his fetish colour – into the carbon fibre case. Because of a change to the time trials for Formula E, Sébastien Buemi was unable to take part in the Petit Mans with Rebellion Racing on October 7. This endurance race in the US closed out the season so a new Oreca 07 LMP2 team was put together to promote the Only Watch event. It comprised Nick Heidfeld from Germany, Mathias Beche from Switzerland and American Gustavo Menezes.

T

o start with, there’s the Sébastien Buemi Predator 2.0 Regulator Power Reserve. It displays its legacy with a design that blends watchmaking history and race car aesthetics. The Predator 2.0 Regulator Sébastien Buemi Edition is like climbing into a race car. The face is designed to really have that “dashboard” look about it so our racing driver feels completely at home. And with a power reserve of a generous 46 hours, this is a genuine tribute to endurance racing. Created in partnership with Rebellion Timepieces ambassador and FIA World Endurance Champion Sébastien Buemi, this watch is limited to just 16 pieces. Manufactured with high-tech racing materials such as compressed carbon fibre, decorated with Sébastien Buemi’s lucky colour, yellow, the racer theme is even carried through to the strap which is made from vulcanised rubber like a tyre rather than metal or leather.

If you like to get your thrills at the wheel of a ship as well as a car then you might prefer the two IDEC sports watches, the result of a partnership with IDEC Sport, a sporting group which competes in the worlds of sailing and car racing. The partnership sees Rebellion Timepieces become the official timing partner in both disciplines with an aim to support IDEC Sport’s drive to push boundaries and break records. And the watches break boundaries too, both the Predator 2.0 Regulator Power Reserve IDEC Sport Edition and the Wraith Drive IDEC Sport Edition. The team’s colour red features in both, as does the IDEC Sport Sailing logo on the case back. The Wraith boasts a 48-hour power reserve, a tachymeter bezel and is water resistant to 100 metres. The Predator 2.0 comes with an oscillating mass inspired by sports car rims and red and white exclusive centre hands.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 76

And finally, we couldn’t not include the Predator 2.0 GMT Zenvo. Again, this design is in honour of a partnership, this time with Danish firm, Zenvo Automotive. And again, the nod to the world of racing is far from a passing one. Here we find the hours indicated by a calliper orbiting the brake disc while for time travellers, a second hour reading from a time zone of your choice is shown in a disc at 6 o’clock with the Zenvo logo in the centre. The self-winding movement offers a 42hour power reserve and is based on the ETA 2892 movement. The case for this limited edition is in pink gold. Naturally, Rebellion Timepieces offers bespoke options so you can choose the colour of your strap which is made from vulcanised rubber.

hile the UK may be the pioneer of personalisation in a society where made-to-measure is king, watchmakers are now up to speed when it comes to customising high-end timepieces. Founded in 2008, nestling on the banks of Lake Geneva, the Rebellion brand is home to bold watches produced in extremely limited series. And as if that didn’t make their timepieces rare enough, the Swiss brand now offers clients the chance to customise their models, particularly the case material. So everything the client could conceivably want becomes possible in tailoring these watches designed with the same amount of thought and attention as a race car. The adventurousness that is the company’s trademark is ever present, especially in terms of the case which might be made from black DLC titanium or even pink gold to match current jewellery trends. As well as the case, the strap and face can be altered to suit your whim, either by changing the colour or perhaps inserting a few diamonds. But take note, there are some limits because what matters most at Rebellion is maintaining the brand’s elegant and sporty look.

he 36-year-old Canadian native is experiencing a bit of a career moment, having achieved the impossible with his most recent film Blade Runner 2049, the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 cult classic that starred Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a sullen police detective assigned to hunt down and kill androids, which some critics have declared even better than the original. Taking over from where Ford left off, Gosling played role of Officer K, a new blade runner assigned – like Deckard before him - to terminate rogue replicants, artificially engineered beings virtually indistinguishable from humans. Unsettled by his duties, Officer K seeks out Deckard, who disappeared in the original, in search of answers. Blade Runner 2049 also marked the first big budget studio film of Gosling’s career and he confesses to being glad that he waited until this film came his way. The movie also landed Gosling into the sci-fi world. Having recently made his musical debut in La La Land, which came on the heels of several violent projects including Only God Forgives and The Place Beyond the Pines, Gosling is anxious to keep exploring new cinematic territory. Despite his matinée idol looks and sex symbol status, the actor has often turned down eight-figure pay cheques for big budget studio films in favour of making cutting edge indie films such as Drive. Raised by a single mother in his native town of Cornwall, Ontario, he also spent considerable time absorbing life lessons in the company of his older sister, Mandi. That may well account for his easy-going manner with women and the kind of sensitivity he brings to his screen romances. Apart from his Oscar-nominated performance in Half Nelson, Gosling’s work in The Notebook, Blue Valentine, and La La Land have revealed his abiding passion, curiosity, and appreciation for the opposite sex. Gosling lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend of the past five years, Eva Mendes and their two daughters, Esmeralda, three, and Amada, who will turn two in April.

WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT BLADE RUNNER 2049, AS IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SUCCESS STORIES OF 2017, RIGHT? I thought it was such a compelling character, and I love those – any actor will tell you they are the characters you want to seek out and really get behind. Ultimately, as massive as the world is, as massive as this film is, and as interesting as it is conceptually, there’s these very intimate, personal, emotional storylines as well. So it’s operating on this kind of amazing scale and this character, there’s such a complicated journey that he goes on. And it’s just amazing to me that the film could honour the original in the way that it did, and the storylines, and the questions, and the themes, and yet still accommodate this very different character and story that felt totally enmeshed in the DNA of the original. And yet it still felt original in its own right.

PEOPLE

HOW DO YOU FEEL DIRECTOR DENIS VILLENEUVE CONTRIBUTED HIS OWN PERSPECTIVE TO THE UNIVERSE FIRST CREATED BY RIDLEY SCOTT? It was an incredibly inspiring experience. It felt like such a bold move for Denis to direct the film and such a bold choice to create the world and commit to that vision. He was able to ground it and make this world his own. They were more than just sets. They were monuments to how far he was willing to make that world real and it inspired us to go as far as we could into that world. DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU FIRST SAW BLADE RUNNER AND WHAT KIND OF IMPRESSION IT MADE ON YOU? When I first saw it, it had been around for 10 years and I thought I was watching a science fiction movie, but what I experienced was something very different. What’s interesting about the film is not just how it stays with you. I wasn’t asking myself at age 12 what it meant to be a human being, but I was afterwards, maybe subconsciously. I realized how much influence it had on the culture I grew up in. YOU HADN’T DONE THIS KIND OF A FUTURISTIC SCI-FI STORY BEFORE. HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU STARTED GETTING CAUGHT UP IN THE BLADE RUNNER UNIVERSE? Everyone involved, including me, knew that this film would come under intense

scrutiny and there was that pressure to live up to the ambitions and standard set by the original. Also, for me personally, Blade Runner was one of those key films that fed my love for movies. When you enter a universe that you know from childhood, that’s something very special. And if you’re lucky enough to experience that, it makes you all the more determined so you invest yourself into you work with total dedication and love. And it was interesting to visit the future in this way. The futuristic setting is a spectacle itself and so massive on a conceptual level and the world is both beautiful and a nightmare. WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVED IN LOS ANGELES FROM CANADA , DID IT SEEM LIKE AN ALIEN WORLD TO YOU IN ANY WAY? At first it felt a little strange and it was a mysterious kind of place. I had gotten to know Los Angeles from watching a lot of movies but it still took me a long time to get used to the city. It’s the obvious place to go if you’re trying to become an actor, but now I’m happier living in New York. ONE OF THE QUALITIES THAT IS OFTEN REMARKED ABOUT YOU IS THAT YOU BRING A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE AND SENSITIVITY TO YOUR WORK. YOU’VE SAID BEFORE THAT YOU ATTRIBUTE A LOT OF THAT TO THE FACT YOU WERE RAISED BY YOUR MOTHER AND HAD AN OLDER SISTER TO GUIDE YOU? I had a great time growing up. My mother is a strong woman and when I was having problems fitting into school she decided to take me out and homeschooled me. That was probably the most beautiful thing that could have happened to me and I was able to learn how to study thanks to my mother, whilst also learning a lot about myself. HOW DID THAT SHAPE YOU? Well, you know, I’m sure it made me very protective and caring with women, and I’ve always enjoyed their company and that kind of emotional openness. That’s also the kind of fundamental quality you need to bring to your work as an actor. COULD THAT SENSITIVITY HAVE LED YOU TO DO ANYTHING ELSE IN LIFE? Well, I was very serious when it came to acting and earning a living. My mother and sister were dependent on me after

REBELLION MAGAZINE 84

my parents got divorced, but by mom was supporting me in my career and I could never have achieved anything without her and my sister there for me. So I may have supported them financially but I didn’t look at it as if I was doing anything other than what I should be doing. I saw acting as a way of making very good money compared to how my parents had struggled when my dad was working at a paper mill and my mother was a secretary. So I was happy to be helping my mother and sister. Also, I’m not stupid - acting is a pretty good gig! HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY THE TRAPPINGS OF THAT SUCCESS? I like little luxuries but I’m not the sort of person to obsess over them. I have a beautiful watch, I drive a nice car, I live a good life, but I don’t like to throw that in people’s faces – why would anyone want to do that? What I will say is I think I have worked hard enough for things. I wouldn’t want to be that person who got all the trappings without putting the effort in. No one really wants to be that person. FINALLY, YOU’RE A POPULAR GUY. EVERYONE WHO WORKS WITH YOU HAS SUCH A GREAT TIME - THEY IMMEDIATELY WANT TO WORK WITH YOU AGAIN. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET? Well, when I was a kid my uncle decided he was going to become an Elvis impersonator and suddenly life got very interesting. All my uncles became his bodyguards, my aunts became his back-up singers, I was in his act. Our whole family was making this Elvis act and then, one day, he decided to stop, and it was like the circus left town and it was very depressing and everybody went back to their jobs and it was no fun. So, for me, that’s something I’ve chased since that experience: collaboration. When you collaborate with people and make something with them, it’s a great way to get to really know somebody because you’re seeing them in a way that’s not just social. I enjoy collaborations and I love to repeat them - I think you develop a shorthand and are able to be honest with one another and challenge each other. I think it’s what gets the best work out of you so being around people you know and can trust is always a massive thing. I guess I’ve just been lucky in meeting the right people!

He then won the French 100 metres and 200m titles in 2005 and left his home town to begin a successful partnership with Philippe Lucas, the mentor of French swimming superstar Laure Manaudou. The pool at Cannet-en-Roussillon is synonymous with exacting and interminable training sessions. Lacourt recalls “two great, very hard, years” under the watchful eye of Lucas for whom he retains a high professional and personal regard: “I have great memories of this character, as a coach. I really like Philippe. He is someone I warmed to very much and it was a great group, despite the tough training because we really did swim a lot. We did less weights than in Marseille. It was different, we clocked up a lot of kilometres in the water and I wasn’t used to that, so it was new and very hard.” His efforts paid off because he won two French senior long-course titles and snapped up the national 50m backstroke record as well. He broke into the French national team but injury prevented him

from taking part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was determined to bounce back and so he left Lucas’ group to train in the ‘Cercle des nageurs’ group in Marseille under the tutelage of Romain Barnier. The sessions were more geared towards physical work and the weight-training seemed to suit him. Lacourt marked his return to the pool in 2009-2010 by becoming European champion in Budapest in the 100m backstroke, beating the European record in the process and setting the second-fastest time in history over the distance. In 2011 he was voted European swimmer of the year and in the same year tied for the gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the World Championships in Shanghai with his compatriot Jérémy Stravius. After a mixed London Olympics, he took a break which was followed by several years of success. He won the World Championships in Barcelona in 2013 and two years later in Kazan, and the European title in London in 2016, all in 50m backstroke. Only the Olympic Games eluded him, leaving him with a feeling of unfinished business, especially when he speaks of his belief that Russian and Chinese competitors at the Rio Games had been doping. “They had no place at the Olympic Games. It was probably not the moment to shoot my mouth off,

but I still believe what I said!” explained Rebellion Timepiece’s official ambassador for the Predator 2.0 series. With his post-swimming career flourishing, Lacourt is already sketching out what happens and his life as a young father has become “his new priority”: “Being a dad changes everything. It gives you a real goal in life and it’s just extraordinary.” He also knows how to make the most of his image as a model and is the muse for several brands, including Clarins, for whom he has been ambassador since 2011, also Chanel and not forgetting the J12 Chromatic watch. But the champion remains humble when it comes to his titles and also to his physique. “You are much more beautiful when you win! One year I was fifth at the World Championships and I was not so beautiful then! The following year, when I won, I was much more beautiful - it really made me laugh. So much the better!” joked the five times world champion. The enthusiastic surfer and traveller who wants to visit “Rome, Bali and New York” also dreams of setting up his own company to pass on his passion for swimming to a younger generation, and his experience of high-performance to business seminars. And he has just opened his own restaurant in Paris, Fidèle. Who says swimmers have a head full of water?

in ocean racing have faced off against each other many times between Bruno Peyron setting the first record in 1993 and Francis Joyon’s fantastic feat in 2017. In all, there have been 24 attempts of which 15 ended in failure while the record was broken nine times (Bruno Peyron three times, his brother Loïck once, Oliver de Kersauzon twice including once in a show down with Sir Peter Blake who also set a record, Franck Cammas once and Francis Joyon once). These figures give us an idea of the exceptional qualities of the crew who take up this challenge year after year. FRANCIS JOYON: THE RECORD MAN It was hardly written in the stars that Francis Joyon, from the inland Eure et Loir region, should become an outstanding yachtsman and worthy successor of the giant Éric Tabarly. He learned the ropes at the tough Glénans school of sailing and through delivering yachts and began racing at the end of the 1980s with Paul Vatine. From 1988 and 2000 he cut his teeth on all the major races: the Route de la Découverte, the Route du Rhum, the Transat Jacques Vabre and Quebec-Saint Malo, hogging podiums and winning prizes. On several occasions those rewards were all the more deserved as he picked them up in yachts he had restored himself, such as the catamaran Elf-Aquitaine which had been abandoned on a quayside.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 91

2000 saw his first victory in the TransAtlantic race, Europe 1 New Man Star, setting a new record by making the crossing in under 10 days. This would be the first of a long and uninterrupted series, the result of a permanent partnership with IDEC Group and its CEO, Patrice Lafargue. The most eloquent wins were each accompanied by an extraordinary feat. In 2004, on the IDEC trimaran, he became the first sailor to complete a round the world, non-stop solo voyage in 72 days, 22 hours. In 2005 he beat the North Atlantic crossing record and then lost his boat in dramatic circumstances. But thanks to his courage and the trust IDEC Group placed in him, a new, 29-metre trimaran was built in 2006 with which he would smash the solo round the world record in 57 days - a record that Ellen MacArthur had taken from him. Named Sailor of the Year in 2008, he again bettered his own record for the Route de la Découverte; Cadiz-San Salvador. In 2010, Franck Cammas and his nineman crew “brought down” the Jules Verne Trophy to under 50 days and then Loïck Peyron beat them in turn in 2012 in 45 days and 13 hours. Dona Bertarelli’s giant Spindrift 2, 40-metre trimaran prepared to do even better in 2015. This only served to whet the appetite of Francis Joyon and his faithful partner, IDEC Group. His goal was to go further and become the only sailor to hold a double record – the round the world solo and the Jules Verne trophy.

SAILING

TROPHY, OF BOATS AND MEN At the end of the 1980s, two leading sailors and multihull specialists, Yves Le Cornec and Eugène Riguidel, dreamed of beating the Round the World in 80 Days record thought up by Jules Verne. In 1990 Titouan Lamazou, the late Florence Arthaud and Sir Peter Blake, and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston laid down the guidelines for what would be the most incredible team record of all time. The course was enough to send shivers through the most experienced sailors: setting sail between Ushant and Lizard Point, passing the three capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn) on the portside and making it back to the start line in less than 80 days. Meteorological, technological and human conditions all need to come together on this Dantean route if the Atlantic is to be crossed in four to five days to have any hope of breaking a record. Then you need to be rounding Good Hope by Day 12. You need some 20 days flat out at 30 knots to tackle the Roaring Forties (that hostile and cold universe described by Olivier de Kersauzon) and then the great swell of the Pacific to reach the legendary Cape Horn. The sail back across the Atlantic is usually in more clement conditions but no less dangerous for those aiming for a record. The sea mist and the calm, interspersed with violent storms, sometimes get the better of even top sailors. The greatest names

SAILING THE 2015-2016 ATTEMPT Spindrift 2 and IDEC SPORT set out together on November 22, 2015 to beat Loïck Peyron’s record that had stood since 2012 of 45 days, 13 hours and 42 minutes. The bar was set extremely high but a goal of 42-43 days seemed feasible for the two exceptional skippers: Francis Joyon and Yann Guichard. As they rounded Cape Horn, the two trimarans were practically side by side and 18 hours ahead of Peyron’s record. But, unfortunately, the weather turned against them as they sailed back across the Atlantic. Just four hours separated the two trimarans at the finish line but the 2012 record wasn’t beaten; Spindrift 2 came in at 47 days, 10 hours and 59 minutes and IDEC SPORT in 47 days, 14 hours and 47 minutes. THE RACE AGAINST TIME AND VICTORY IN 2016-2017 The competition became even tighter as the rules stated that if just 1 minute separated the challenger and the record-holder, the record would be considered beaten. That’s an indication of the incredible precision of navigation. The challenger’s position compared to the record was given daily while new technology in the design of multi-hulls and their sails have led

to incredible speeds with an average of 26.51 knots of speed made good in 2012. The extensive use of digitalisation in the design of the central hull and has resulted in more effective hulls with greater stability. The use of the most sophisticated materials such as carbon-nomex (for hulls) and titanium (for metal parts) ensures resistance and lightness. Francis Joyon took a great risk, going against the grain of previous records, in opting for a light trimaran, with less canvassing, and a reduced but multi-skilled commando crew made up of only the best. Setting off on December 16, 2016 IDEC SPORT would cross the line in 40 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes, beating the record by 4 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes and 23 seconds. Joyon and his crew members ( Sébastien Audigane, Bernard Stamm, Gwénolé Gahinet, Alex Pella and Clément Surtel), supported by his router on land, former Volvo Race sailor Marcel Van Triest, achieved an extraordinary feat. Seen through the prism of the daily log, the performance is an anthology to sailing; 894 miles in one day at an average of 37.3 knots, eight days of more than 800 miles and seven of more than 700, the Indian Ocean swallowed up at an average of close on 35 knots with surfs of more than 40 knots.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 92

By Cape Horn, IDEC SPORT would be four days ahead of the 2012 record. This time, Francis Joyon and his crack crew would not allow this advance to be snatched away by the traps laid in the Atlantic. The strategies the skipper and Marcel Van Triest employed to get round them enabled them to maintain a comfortable lead up to the Equator; the route to Brittany and the record was opening up before them. A breath-taking pace and the speed with which they rounded the three capes got the better of the already exceptional record set by Loïck Peyron five years earlier. Undoubtedly, Francis Joyon’s initial decisions were the right ones because the record-breaking boat was not unknown; this was the former Groupama 3 with which Franck Cammas and his nine-man crew notched up a time of 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds in 2010. Starting with this sound base, designed by the naval architect Marc Van Peteghem, Francis Joyon innovated by altering certain parameters to reduce the weight without reducing strength. The mast was shortened but the same weight/sail surface ratio was maintained. The centre of effort of the sail was also lowered. These were the technical ingredients of victory.

Lic workshops was founded in 1971

SAILING THE KEY VALUES TO SUCCESS The Jules Verne Trophy requires outstanding qualities, simply to dare to rise to the challenge and even more to carry it off as brilliantly as Francis Joyon and all his predecessors did. On arrival he declared: “This is half of the Jules Verne novel. It is a symbolic number. When Bruno Peyron did it in 80 days I thought that was incredible. To reduce that by half really means a lot to us; we gave our all, we went flat out all the time.” To go flat out all the time, you have to have a great skipper who knows how to attract the very best sailors to a project. This project consisted of battling against time every single second, whatever the weather or the levels of fatigue. This required a superhuman effort. The idea of tackling

the record in a lighter craft with a crew stripped down to just five people was a gamble and many were sceptical. But Francis Joyon’s belief in his idea and his “commando” crew was unshakeable. A mountain of courage and willpower enabled them to win this race against time. These same values are found in their partner, IDEC Group and its CEO, Patrice Lafargue, who has always stood by Francis Joyon, even after events took a dramatic turn. IDEC Group, the global real estate operator, covers all aspects of property development, investment and turnkey building/planning. Each operation is a challenge which draws on the qualities of a major company, playing a similar role to that of the greatest skippers.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 94

In their race against time, Francis Joyon and the IDEC Group saw their success rewarded by the backing of a new partner, the Swiss watchmakers, REBELLION. REBELLION TIMEPIECES excel in endurance watches. Innovative technology is at the forefront throughout the manufacture of their products. This mastery of technology has pushed the limits of the possible in power reserves as illustrated in its atypical designs such as the Magnum 540 and the Gotham T-1000. Without wasting any time, from July 2017 Francis Joyon, backed by his two partners, broke his own solo Atlantic crossing record in 5 days, 2 hours and 7 minutes. Yet more records will surely follow.

HE SHOWS REAL PASSION FOR THE JOB AS HE DESCRIBES HIS PHILOSOPHY AND OUTLINES HIS OB-JECTIVES FOR PUPILS AT THE SCHOOL.A CHARISMATIC AND COMMANDING PRESENCE, HE IS TRULY THE HEART AND SOUL OF COLLÈGE DU LÉMAN. THE MADE FOR YOU PROGRAMME IN POLE POSITION Mr. Schädler has a strong educational ethos and down-toearth approach which ensures the principles underpinning Collège du Léman go above and beyond mere concepts of learning and transmission of knowledge. The Director General of Collège du Léman believes that pupils have the best chance of suc-cess and fulfilment when they are solving problems for themselves in a process of self-discovery. It is not about imposing one particular way of thinking, but rather allowing students to develop their own methods, according to their strengths and personality, while respecting their individuality. Through problem solving, pupils are challenged as individuals; it is a way of finding out about themselves and exceeding their own expectations. It is also a basis for learning social skills and how to communicate by putting into practice the values they have learned. Children discover and build on their potential and grows in their own way - this is the essence of the school’s “Made for You” programme: to be oneself, through a truly high-class education… and to take those values into the real world! Because the truth is, you can give children all the tools, but if they are not the right ones or if they have not learned how to use them properly, they will not succeed when they leave school, either professionally or person-ally.

THOMAS SCHÄDLER, A POWERFUL MOTOR FOR THE COLLÈGE DU LÉMAN Collège du Léman provides a framework that sets out the principles of loyalty, respect, toler-ance, knowledge, and those of education. It provides a strong foundation, not just “distrib-uting better tools”, but teaching students how to use them according to their own personality, their affinities, their sensitivities and their potential. Certainly, Mr. Schädler’s love of Formula 1 may not be a coincidence! The Michel Vaillant comics, the eponymous series about a French racing driver, that he borrowed secretly from his elder brother when he was a child, promoting important human values, definitely made a deep impression on Mr. Schädler. They allowed him to understand, from an early age, the power of the fundamental principles he holds so dear and which now resonate at Collège du Léman, and make him an excep-tional leader. He is someone who has the will and the appetite to change the world with something unique: education. So here he is, our definition of a great man, a hero of modern times, able to build dreams for the future and make them happen for children.
