REBELLION MAGAZINE 5

REBELLION’S NOTE

REBELLION was started in 2007 in Geneva by Alexandre Pesci, an entrepreneur fascinated by timepieces, high-performance cars and motorsport. When he became Chairman and CEO of his family’s firm LEMO, the world leader in the design and manufacture of precision connectors, he realized that all the necessary skills for watchmaking and mechanical engineering were right there in the family business. His next step was to set up REBELLION Corporation and appoint Calim Bouhadra as CEO. There were three entities within REBELLION: Rebellion Racing, REBELLION Timepieces and Rebellion Motors. All three continue to uphold REBELLION’s values of Passion, Perfection and Performance, tirelessly endeavouring to achieve ever-greater success, and boldly going where no one expected them to go. In this magazine, we tell their stories and talk to their suitably rebellious ambassadors from the worlds of car racing, music and design, Bruno Senna, Mr Probz, RocketbyZ and Mia Flewitt, about the experience of working with REBELLION. REBELLION Racing, REBELLION Timepieces and REBELLION Motors’ bold, uncompromising DNA is written into every page of the second edition of REBELLION Magazine.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Passion, perfection and performance have been written into the DNA of Blush Editions ever since our founding ten years ago, so we instantly saw eye to eye with Rebellion’s CEO Calim Bouhadra. Our shared love of horology and motor sports was another bond. From there, it was a short step to a partnership between Blush Editions and REBELLION. It is now five years since we started working together, and it gives me great pleasure to present the second issue of REBELLION magazine. This issue retraces the amazing story of the Swiss motor racing stable that set out to do things differently and reminded us what being a rebel really means. We invite you to join us in celebrating a shared endeavour, time well spent and a superb record of achievement.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 10

Initially set up in 2007 as Speedy Racing Team Sebah, Rebellion Racing acquired its now legendary name in 2010. With its rebel DNA and unique strengths, it was well placed to compete in the ruthless world of endurance racing. Over its 13 years in motorsport (2007–2020), Rebellion Racing has notched up success after success.

In 2013, Rebellion Racing’s daring team of drivers took part in the second edition of the FIA World Endurance Championship - an eight-round event encompassing Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Le Mans, Sao Paulo, the Circuit of the Americas, Fuji, Shanghai and Bahrain. The brand’s strategy of concentrating on the World Endurance Championship now began to take shape. With the agreement of ORECA, its chassis partner, Rebellion Racing designed and made a Le Mans Prototype (LMP) racing car with a Toyota RV8K-LM engine, the Rebellion R-One. The car had its first competitive outing in the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the 6 Heures de SpaFrancorchamps. After a successful four-year run with the Toyota engine, Rebellion Racing was looking for even greater mechanical perfection and truly outstanding performance levels. In the run-up to the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship, it announced a new engine partnership. The Rebellion R-One AER LMP1 would continue to race under the Swiss team’s lucky numbers

In 2017, Rebellion Racing returned to North America for the Petit Le Mans, which it had won in 2012 and 2013. The event was originally part of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) created in 1999 by the industrialist Don Panoz, which merged with the Rolex Sports Car Series to form the United SportsCar Championship (organized by the IMSA in 2014), subsequently renamed the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Also in 2017, Rebellion’s independent team ran in the LMP2 category of the 2017 FIA WEC. At the end of the 10th round - the 6 Hours of Bahrain - dauntless drivers Bruno Senna, Nicolas Prost and Julien Canal took the wheel of the ORECA Vaillante Rebellion n ° 31 to win the hotly contested world LMP2 title, making Julien Canal, who comes from Le Mans, double LMP2 World Champion (the first time was in 2015). Not content with one step of the podium, Rebellion Racing also took third place, with its second ORECA-Gibson car, no.13, driven by Nelson Piquet Jr, Mathias Beche and David Heinemeier Hansson. The team raced under the name Vaillante Rebellion for the occasion, in homage to Michel Vaillant, the hero of a famous motorsport comic strip created in 1957. This was Rebellion Racing’s sixth world title in as many FIA WEC seasons, following five LMP1 wins between 2012 and 2016. Porsche’s announcement that it would not be taking part in the LMP1 category of the 2018 FIA WEC led to changes in the non-hybrid class. In a December 2017 press release, R eb el l i o n Ra c i n g c o n f i rm e d that it would be returning to the LMP1 category for the 2018–2019 Super Season.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 11

The prototype LMP1 Rebellion R13 (#1 and #3) was designed and made by ORECA Technology. Under Christophe Guibbal’s leadership, ORECA’s Design Office produced two operational cars with Gibson GL-458 engines in just six months. The Rebellion R13 was yet another car that epitomised everything Rebellion Racing was about, combining superb mechanics with innovative design to achieve outstanding performance. By the end of the 2018–2019 Super Season, Rebellion Racing had added another title to its collection, coming second in the LMP1 World Championship. Rebellion Racing’s star continued to rise in the world of motorsport. Its rebel DNA did not stop it meeting the stringent requirements of top car racing events, and throughout its history, the team pulled out all the stops to meet and surpass their fans’ expectations. The crowning achievement came with the 2019– 2020 FIA WEC, in which the Swiss team was the overall winner, coming first in the 4 Hours of Shanghai and the fifth round at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin (Texas). The same season saw Rebellion Timepieces team up with the Dakar Rally, pooling their efforts to encourage participants’ aspirations. Rebellion became the Rally’s official timekeeper, and its owner, Alexandre Pesci, participated in the event with panache, along with his co-driver, Stephan Kuhni. After 13 years of car racing and a rich haul of wins, Rebellion Racing, announced that the 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours would be its last endurance race. Being one of the few private teams to challenge the supremacy of the manufacturers has been a rollercoaster ride. The Rebellion Racing team are proud to have been part of the adventure, to have risen to so many challenges and to have written a chapter of car racing history without ever losing their rebel spirit!

PA S S I O N

The Swiss privateer made its entrance into endurance racing history in 2012, in the 24 Heures du Mans, when its strong LMP1 team beat the official Audi team to finish in fourth place. For this event, Rebellion Racing used the new Lola B12/60 models made by British manufacturer Lola Cars, driven by Nicolas Prost (France) and Andrea Belicchi (Italy).

#12 and #13, but would now be powered by twin-turbocharged engines made by UK-based engineering firm Advanced Engine Research. Rebellion Racing’s LMP1 team now had the best maximum power / torque / efficiency combination on the market.

HOW DO PASSION, PERFECTION AND PERFORMANCE TRANSLATE IN YOUR LIFE AS CEO OF REBELLION CORPORATION? For me and Alexandre Pesci, those were the three brand values that naturally emerged. We’ve always thrown ourselves into our various projects with a real passion to outdo ourselves, to strive for perfection even in the smallest details and to achieve the best possible performance. It’s vital to keep trying to surpass yourself and going on, especially when other people tell you it’s impossible and that you shouldn’t go down that road.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS? Of course, there have been several. Winning or being placed in the Le Mans 24 Hours, and winning the last race of the LMP2 world championship by just 12 seconds after a six-hour struggle. WHICH RACING DRIVER HAS MADE THE DEEPEST IMPRESSION ON YOU AND INSPIRES YOU TODAY? No need to think twice - Bruno Senna! He’s a fantastic champion: determined, professional and gifted. The Senna blood runs in his veins. He’s a chip off the old block, as the saying goes…

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL DEFINITION OF REBELLION’S DNA? As we said before, the three “P” s: Passion, which feeds into our lives, Perfection, meaning a good job well done, and Performance, to make sure we stay in the race - prefNOW THAT THE REBELLION RACING CHAPTER erably in the lead, of course! SECOND IN THE LAST 24 HOURS OF LE MANS

FOR ITS 13TH AND L AST PARTICIPATION TO THE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS, REBELLION RACING ACHIEVED ITS BEST EVER RESULT IN THE OVERALL CL ASSIFICATION OF THE LEGENDARY ENDURANCE RACE.

REBELLION Racing approached this weekend with the desire to bow out in the best possible way after many months of preparation. The Swiss team took up the challenge of Hyperpole with Gustavo Menezes on N. 1 and Louis Delétraz on N. 3. The talented American driver achieved provisional pole in 3:15.822 before being dethroned by the Toyota N. 7 for only 5 tenths of a second ! On the sister car, Louis Delétraz also did very well for his first participation by setting the 4th fastest time. The long-awaited moment has arrived, the start of the Le Mans 24 Hours is given 463 days after the arrival of the last edition. Bruno Senna, on the R13 N.1, and Nathanaël Berthon, on the R13 N.3, make an excellent start and keep up with the two Toyota cars. Bruno Senna has the best race lap in the 4th lap in 3:19.264. After some problems for the Toyota #8, Nathanaël Berthon moves up to third place in the first hour.

During the night, shortly after the mid-race, the leading Toyota N.7 enters its garage, allowing Gustavo Menezes to move up to 2nd in the N.1 and Romain Dumas to take 3rd place in the N.3. At dawn, the positions are unchanged with Norman Nato 2nd on the N.1 and Nathanaël Berthon 3rd on the N.3. A problem with the front bonnet made the R13 N.1 lose 5 minutes and came out of the pits just behind the N.3.Shortly before the last hour, Louis misses the braking at Indianapolis and a slight shock with the tyre wall damages the front, which caused a big loss of time that knocked the R13 N. 3 down to fourth place… By crossing the line in 2nd position overall behind the untouchable Toyota, Norman Nato, Gustavo Menezes and Bruno Senna climb on the podium for the sixth time in a row this season. A great conclusion for the Swiss team to their 2019-2020 season.

The first race event came in the first lap with a contact between car No. 1 and the Dragonspeed car No. 10. The front of the R-13 car came off and Lotterer was forced to return to the stand urgently. André Lotterer came out P10 and engaged a crazy rise in the classification. Thomas Laurent started a battle in the first half-hour with Stéphane Sarrazin driving SMP Racing No. 17. In the first hour of the race, Thomas Laurent confirmed his third position still in the fight with SMP Racing. André Lotterer quickly catched up and passed P8 then P6 one hour later. The first double change came at 2:30 of race with the entries of Mathias Beche and Bruno Senna. As soon as they enter the track, Both REBELLION drivers competed for the long-awaited third place with SMP

Racing No. 17. The next drivers Neel Jani and Gustavo Menezes did the same, alternating between third, fourth and fifth positions overall. Back at the wheel, Lotterer and Laurent took their positions as non-Hybrid leaders. An outing of SMP Racing No. 17 in the eighth hour prevente them from catching both Toyota Gazoo Racing cars. A new race started between the Japanese Hybrids and both Swiss cars. The Toyotas, with several laps ahead were never be overtaken by the R-13 cars alternating between third and fourth positions. The race continued until Sunday, June 17th at 3:00 pm where the REBELLION No. 3 crossed the finish line in third position of the general classification and first non-Hybdrid. The 42nd edition of the Dakar Rally was the first to be held in Saudi Arabia since the race was launched in December 1978 - and the first in which the 100% Swiss team Rebellion took part, although Rebellion has been official timekeeper to the Dakar Rally since 2019. This time, the rally-raid dreamt up by Thierry Sabine took the form of an epic twelve-day drive across the desert, starting in Jeddah on 5 January 2020 and finishing in Qiddiyah, near Riyadh, the Saudi capital. The drivers were assessed over twelve timed stages adding up to 5,000 km, but the total distance was 7,800 km.

RACING DAKAR

Good navigational skills were essential to negotiate the maze of tracks, but Alexandre Pesci and Stephan Kuhni had had the good fortune to receive training from Mathieu Beaumel and Nasser Al Attiyah - and they were driving the unique, high-performing Rebellion DXX Buggy, so they set off on their wild adventure with high hearts. The Rebellion team found themselves driving on all kinds of extreme terrain, from dunes to river-beds. They needed all their reserves of endurance: Alexandre Pesci described it as “even tougher than Le Mans”. Rebellion is used to endurance racing, but that did not stop the two novices from having several misadventures, including getting badly stuck in sand. It was only after an hour and half of gruelling effort that the Rebellion Buggy was able to resume its journey.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 33

For this first participation Alexandre Pesci’s and Stephan Kuhni’s only aspiration was to make it to the finish in Qiddiyah, which they succeeded in doing on Friday 17 January 2020 - but in fact the Swiss team came third in the Newcomers category and eleventh in the petrol 2-wheel drive category. Once again, Rebellion had risen to the challenge of a motorsports discipline that was totally new to them! Better trained, with an improved buggy, once again prepared in RD Limited’s workshops, it was with even greater enthusiasm and motivation that the rebells returned to the magnificent landscapes of Saudi Arabia for the 2021 edition of the Dakar. Two cars were entered at the start by Rebellion Racing : the DXX #351 buggy driven by Alexandre Pesci, accompanied as in the previous edition by Stephan Kuhni, and the second DXX #315 buggy, driven by Romain Dumas, with Gilles De Turckheim as co-driver. Sandy tracks, rocky roads, dunes and valleys to finish on the shores of the Red Sea… For this 43rd edition, the Dakar didn’t disappoint. After a first stage full of promises, the collision suffered by Romain Dumas and Gilles de Turckheim during the second stage had consequences on the whole competition for the duo. After a series of good performances, and despite mechanical problems during the penultimate stage, their buggy finished the race and was ranked 43rd overall. Constant during all the events, the 9th stage put an end to the adventure for Alexandre Pesci and Stephan Kühni after an engine failure which led to a series of rollovers. The chassis of the buggy was damaged and the crew, which was in 42nd position overall, was forced to retire. The adventure will continue in 2022…

TWENTY-ONE GMT

The Twenty-One is a perfect blend of luxury watchmaking, high-tech processes and the kind of sleek design associated with classic cars. Yet again, Rebellion Timepieces has succeeded in combining the best of three very different worlds to create a seamless whole. Built around a core design concept that references a classic two-spoke steering-wheel, complete with Sixties-style speedo and counters, it has an automatic manufacture movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. The Rebellion logo is displayed on a central disc like the hooter on a

REBELLION MAGAZINE 41

steering-wheel, and round dial features heighten the resemblance. The hour is shown by a rotating disc, and there are two subdials, one for the seconds and the other for a second timezone. The rotor on the back of the timeless cushion case is reminiscent of a car wheel rim. This utterly elegant new-generation timepiece is a superb modern reinterpretation of classic watch design.

The Predator was designed and developed by Rebellion Timepieces in collaboration with the designer Eric Giroud, in the same spirit as the rest of the collection - bold, striking, robust and designed to exceptionally high standards of quality and technical performance. The five-layered dial’s honeycomb base lends rigidity, lightness and transparency. The chronograph’s counters are connected to the dial by tierods with a ruby centrepin decoration. The Predator’s sectoral seconds display follows Swiss watchmaking tradition in using a short hand

for 0 to 30 seconds and a longer hand for 30 to 60 seconds. The hour, minute and chronograph hands are made of pink gold or steel, diamond-tipped and partially recessed and filled with SuperLumiNova for optimum readability. The watch’s motorsports DNA is subtly detectable in its detailing with a distinctive bezel held by eight logo-branded screws and a base featuring six Torx screws. Connoisseurs of exclusive timepieces will love this model’s state-ofthe-art components.

RE-VOLT CHRONOGRAPH

The Re-Volt perfectly embodies Rebellion’s refusal to compromise. The bold design and technical complexity of car chassis are built into its DNA. Its 48hour power reserve, sinewy, angular shape and outstanding performance make it the ultimate hightech watch. A skeletonized calibre creates a spectacular effect of depth, superbly set off by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. This is a watch that has nothing to hide. Beneath the

REBELLION MAGAZINE 43

skeletonized hands, which are partially coated with a luminescent material, the gears and balance keep time, attracting the gaze to the mechanical ballet of the silhouetted manufacture movement. The Re-Volt’s stylish insolence, pareddown design and use of state-of-the-art technology put it in a class of its own. Compact and lightweight, at 38.5 x 40.35 mm, it is also the smallest watch Rebellion Timepieces has ever made.

Seven years after launching the imposing RE-1 Chronograph, Rebellion Timepieces has brought out a new version whose subtle finesse pushes the boundaries of luxury. As square and discreetly yet unmistakably masculine as its precedessor, this iconic Rebellion timepiece features an elegant honeycomb dial and a robust Swiss Made automatic movement that guarantees totally accurate time measurements. Superimposed layers of titanium, carbon and pink gold create an impression of solidity while ensuring high levels of technical

performance. The superb mechanism can be viewed from the back of the watch via a large sapphire crystal glass. The case has been radically redesigned to incorporate light, rigid materials used in the chassis of racing cars, and is now made of a combination of forged carbon, braided carbon, gold and titanium. The RE-1 2.0 Chronograph’s bold design and outstanding performance capabilities unashamedly proclaim the brand’s ambition.

T-1000

A high-performance manufacture timepiece that reflects Rebellion’s fascination with motor racing, the T-1000 features a highly rigid chassis machined down from a single block of grade 5 titanium with high-precision CNC 5-axis machines. Its elegant body features a distinctive curved section that reveals the whole of the in-house movement via a sapphire crystal glass. Its powerful engine uses a revolutionary patent energy distribution system and has a power reserve of 1000 hours - 40 days and 40 nights. Power is supplied by six barrels set vertically in two sets of three on either side of the watchcase, in parallel with the mainspring, and distributed in series via two microchains to maximize evenness of supply to the regulator.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 45

With its distinctive oversized winding lever, rectangular shape and exceptional size, the T-1000 is an unmistakable, highly characterful watch, and its 3-D all-aluminium engine, with vertical barrels and mechanical chain transmission, completely deconstructs the conventional movement. It took three years of research, development and adjustments to perfect the T-1000’s in-house manufacture movement. The resulting timepiece epitomises innovation and performance. But in 2018, Rebellion’s T2M topped the T-1000’s world record for endurance with its power reserve of 1400 hours (two months)! Rebellion Timepieces’ outstanding per fectionism - and its world records - have earned it a unique place in Swiss haute horlogerie.

Rebellion Timepieces loves a belief-defying challenge. Making the modular sapphire case for this watch was a feat unrivalled anywhere in the world. It took master watchmaker David Candaux 99 days to diamond-mill and polish the eight parts that make it up. At the heart of this unique piece is an unusual manufacture movement, the REB-T14, dominated by an oversized flying tourbillon 540 tenths of a millimetre in circumference and 17.2 mm in diameter. To make up for its large size, it is made from materials that combine rigidity and lightness with superb tech-

nical characteristics - compressed carbon, titanium and aluminium. The brand presented this magnificent, eagerly-awaited timepiece at the 2016 edition of Watches & Wonders Geneva (SIHH). The celebrated rally-driver and multiple Dakar winner Nasser AlAttiyah joined the elite circle of Rebellion watch-owners by purchasing the Sapphire Magnum 540 Tourbillon for 2 million Swiss francs. In the world of Rebellion Timepieces, convention and compromise have to be thrown to the winds in the relentless quest for perfection!

WEAP-ONE DIAMOND

With its amazing cylindrical case and highly unusual calibre, the Weap-One represents a total break with high-end watchmaking conventions. Fans of Rebellion Timepieces are used to being surprised, but this time the wow factor is through the roof! The brand has pushed back the boundaries of possibility by creating a cylinder-shaped titanium case 40 mm long and 25 mm in diameter with a crown in the form of a wheel nut at each end. The right-hand one winds the movement and the lefthand one sets the time. The hours and minutes are displayed on two sapphire crystal rollers flanking an asymmetrical 60-second flying tourbillon that rotates majestically on multiple axes.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 47

This intricate proprietary manually wound movement contains no fewer than 529 skilfully assembled components. Another convention-challenging feature is the WeapOne’s ability to transform. The case can be unclasped from the strap to turn the watch into a mini table clock. And not content to rest on its laurels, Rebellion Timepieces set itself the challenge of making a synthetic diamond cage for the clock. This hightech material is virtually unbreakable and is used in the aerospace industry. It took 280 days to grow the seven-millimetre synthetic diamond needed to make the component. With Rebellion Timepieces at the wheel, watchmaking gets more and more exciting!

HOW DID THE MEETING WITH REBELLION CORPORATION TAKE PLACE? I have followed Rebellion’s racing for years and was first introduced to their timepieces when I met Joaquin Mejia, Rebellion Timepieces Mexico, at a Mclaren event several years ago. When Bruno Senna then joined Rebellion Racing I was following this even more intently as Bruno is also a friend and in 2019 at Pebble Beach we all got together in the McLaren hospitality area for a chat which also included my first meeting with Calim. We started discussing a potential partnership and I was lucky enough to visit Rebellion in Switzerland at the end of last year, and from there on we decided that I would become an ambassador for Rebellion Timepieces.

WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR THE FUTURE? I have my sights set on the British GT GT4 pro/am title and perhaps also get some testing in a GT3 car. My goal is to do well for my partners so that my partnerships are solid and longterm. I already have plans for events, shows and other media work with most of my partners for later this year. HOW ARE YOU PREPARING TO REACH THESE GOALS? We have been working hard with our team, Balfe Motorsport, on car setup, testing and also my own fitness so that we are as ready as we can be to fight at the front. Last time out in the car we felt very confident we have a very good team, very good pace as a pro/am pairing with my co driver, Euan Hankey, and definitely the passion to win. IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR MENTALITY AS A RACING DRIVER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Passionate, obsessive, determined and single minded about my racing. That’s probably the same for most drivers! I’m hugely competitive and will never give up until the flag comes down. WHAT VALUES DO YOU REPRESENT BY BEING PART OF THE REBELLION’S TEAM? I feel like I’m part of a family and the family values applies, passion, teamwork, will to succeed together. The fact that Rebellion always look for unconventional ways fits very well with how I live my life every day. WHICH ONES ARE CLOSEST TO WHAT YOU ARE? Being part of a team (family) that share your passion and always have each others back. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE US TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE DRIVER YOU ARE? Look for ways to achieve your dream and don’t be afraid to find a different route to get there. I’m living my racing dream with the help and support of my family and partners and I always remember to be grateful.

HOW DOES YOUR REBELLION EXPRESS ITSELF IN YOU? I was born a rebel if you ask any of my family or friends! I have always found ways to do what I want to do, not necessarily what other people expect me to do. Unconvential might be the term most would use as I spent my younger years building cars before training as an engineer and moving to England from Sweden to work for Tom Walkinshaw Racing. My love for motor racing has been there throughout but I was only able to spectate when young as I didn’t have the funds to go racing. I feel very grateful to my partners who support me in my racing career today as I chase the racing dream.

HOW DID YOU FIRST ENCOUNTER REBELLION? The first time I came into contact with Rebellion was at Baselworld, where I met Calim. I couldn’t help but notice the T-1000 he was wearing and it sparked a conversation. He invited me to come to the Le Mans 24 Hours that year and so I went. It was my first ever live racing event and it turned out to be one of those “You had to be there to understand” moments. It was also there that Calim introduced me to a wide spectrum of amazing people within the Rebellion family. From that moment on we’ve all been very very good friends.

HOW DOES YOUR REBELLIOUS SPIRIT EXPRESS ITSELF IN YOUR COMPOSITIONS? When I create music I do it to move people. Wherever they are in the world or in life. I don’t follow trends and I understand that as a human being I will always make mistakes, but mistakes give me the opportunity to grow and become better at whatever I set my mind to. I wish more people could see their own potential in that way. WHAT IS YOUR LIFESTYLE? Sometimes Gatsby and sometimes Tom Hanks in Cast Away, but mostly in the middle. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT? I’m currently working on a new album and expanding the record label Left Lane Recordings, and I’ve got several other ongoing projects. I’m always on the move! WHAT DOES BEING A REBELLION AMBASSADOR MEAN TO YOU? Friendship, authenticity, gratitude and confirmation that I’m not the only crazy person in the world - ha ha! IS THERE ANY ONE OF YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH REBELLION CORPORATION THAT STANDS OUT AS ESPECIALLY INTENSE? I’ve been to a lot of places and seen a lot of things but the Le Mans 24 Hours parade with Rocketbyz was one of the best experiences of my life. IF YOU WERE AN ENDURANCE DRIVER, WHAT CIRCUIT WOULD YOU WANT TO RACE ON? My driving skills kinda suck so I don’t really think it matters. It would look really really bad regardless. I know because we did a carting race with the Rebellion Racing drivers once and my name didn’t even show on the board - ha ha! WHAT SKILLS AND CHARACTER TRAITS DO YOU HAVE THAT COULD HELP YOU WIN AN ENDURANCE RACE? Clearly, not my driving skills, but my motivation and determination might compensate in the long run. I never give up.

WHAT DO YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ABOUT REBELLION’S DNA? Personally, I think what draws me in is the fact that no matter where you come from or what you do, there is a strong connection between everyone who is linked to the brand. Every time this particular group of people come together there is a certain energy that lights up the room.

WHAT DOES YOUR ART TRANSLATE AS REBEL? That means for me only one thing, to follow his own way and be outstanding and go different ways, always! WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE AN ARTIST WHEN YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF ON A SUPPORT SUCH AS A RACE CAR? A WATCH? Its amazing to see my art on the rebellion racecars and create the limited watch edition with this amazing company. i love to create art to use for people around the world.thats the most important thing for me, to bring more colors into peoples world.cuz colors make all of us happy. WHAT EXPRESSES THE INTENSE COLOURS YOU WORK WITH? Its the power of these colors they catch me already.when i saw movies from back in a days at the ’60s and ’70s, specialy around the hippie time, impressed me very much.and specialy also to let my art glow under uv light by night. IF YOU WERE TO COMPARE YOURSELF TO A RACE CAR DRIVER, WHICH VALUES WOULD YOU SHARE WITH HIM? Still to follow your own direction, and go over limits, cuz everythings is possible.and also work hard for your dream! HOW DOES REBELLION MOTORS DIFFER FROM OTHER GARAGES SPECIALIZING IN HIGH-END CARS? After a 28-year career in a big luxury sports cars group, I realized that the customers were becoming just numbers to me. I wanted to work somewhere I could concentrate solely on offering customers individualized services tailored to their needs - somewhere exclusive, where the team was like a family. For me, managing Rebellion Motors was an opportunity to make customers’ well-being our central concern, so the team and I spend time listening to what they want, learning the history of their cars and making sure we meet their expectations. Today, we can be sure our customers remain loyal to the Rebellion family.

That comes from the right spatial proportions, the right amount of light, and an atmosphere that subtly reveals the soul of the building. Virus Architecture also offers an interior decoration service. My team and I can transform an ill-thought-out interior by looking at the furniture and the decoration scheme as a whole before suggesting changes.

WHAT ARE VIRUS ARCHITECTURE’S GOALS? Our main goals are to enjoy what we do and share our love of architecture. We put our heart and soul into the task of designing and developing buildings, so we’re always trying to think of ways to improve. DO YOU FIND INCREASINGLY STRICT BUILDING REGULATIONS A CONSTRAINT? It’s true that building regulations are getting stricter and stricter. We have less and less leeway: the approach to planning is very different from what it used to be. But constraints and limitations on what we can do encourage us to push our creative boundaries and rethink living spaces. The more constraints we have, the better the project ends up being.

A ROUNDABOUT ROUTE Patrick Bika, the founder of RoadBook, was originally a photographer. He has always been attracted to the design, the unique smell and, above all, the fascinating stories behind cars from the 1930s and 1950s. The idea of starting a car magazine came to him when he was at a rally. From the very first issue, RoadBook stood out for its unique format and the bold decision to opt for black and white, giving pride of place to photographs by its founder. A subtle blend of retro and contemporary, rather than being purely about cars, the magazine conjures up a lifestyle, using photographs to trigger emotions. It is more than just a magazine: it is an object to appreciate for itself, a travel diary to share with friends and fellow-devotees. ON THE ROAD WITH REBELLION So Patrick Bika and his team were delighted to have the opportunity to do a feature on Rebellion focusing on the distinctive identity of the Swiss team and their participation in the Dakar rally together with Alexandre Pesci, for which a portfolio was supplied, and to ask RoadBook’s new writer, Jorge Guerreiro, to commemorate RoadBook’s and Rebellion’s shared passion for cars with a thrilling immersive report on the Le Mans 24 Hours.

By remaining in directing contact with the drivers throughout, Guerreiro (now editor of RoadBook, succeeded in vividly capturing Rebellion’s involvement in the race from the inside. The two organizations have similar philosophies, and both aspire to give their fans something to dream about, which made working together an enjoyable experience for all concerned. AN AMBITIOUS EXPANSION STRATEGY At present, RoadBook’s readership is mainly concentrated in French-speaking Switzerland, but as of September, the firm will be expanding to cover the whole of Switzerland by bringing out French-English and English-German double issues of the magazine and giving a fresh impetus to all its activities with a new visual identity, repositioned editorial values and new content. RoadBook is now making full use of the opportunities presented by digital media, social networks and influencers to showcase the powerful images that have been key to the magazine’s success. It is rolling out an all-round marketing strategy while remaining 100% focused on quality so as to meet brands’ expectations and highlight what makes them unique.

EVERY EVENT IS AN ADVENTURE Amid the plethora of events agencies that have popped up in Switzerland in the last few years, Red Monkeys stands out from the crowd by coming up with totally new concepts out of nowhere, time after time. How do they do it? By starting off with a blank slate and working with customers to devise an individual project that will be exactly what the client wants, needs and can afford. This small, friendly firm prides itself on listening very closely to potential customers so as to offer the best possible guidance. We’re all fed up with bland, samey events. Red Monkeys tears up the events design rule-book to create events that really are experiences. Yochen Patti and his team of designers seem to have an endless supply of ideas for ready-to-run custom events and producing one amazing decor after another in their studios in Romanel-sur-Lausanne. You’ve probably heard of their selfie photo mirror, a Swiss first, but they have also developed Lycra decorations and lighting, pop-up stores, mobile studios and high-tech interactive activities involving VR simulations, 3D holograms and drone hire. Red Monkeys’ adventurous approach has attracted a wide range of private and corporate clients including the international school College Alpin International Beau Soleil, global names like Nespresso, Philip Morris and

the Fédération Equestre Internationale, and legendary Swiss hotels such as the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic in Montreux and the Royal Savoy Hotel in Lausanne. ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH Red Monkeys’ unconventional approach to events design caught Rebellion’s eye, and the two firms have now been working together for over two years. High points include designing the Rebel-lion stand for the Swiss Car Event, helping Rebellion make the most of its participation in the 24 heures du Mans, and organizing a private party with a hand-picked guest list for the start of the Dakar adventure. The Red Monkeys events team is totally dedicated to promoting the distinctive Rebellion Motors concept. What began as a partnership between the two entities has developed into a genuine friendship. For car enthusiast Yochen Patti and his right-hand woman Clara Callejo, thinking up quirky promotional events for Rebellion is a pleasure that is compounded by the fact that Red Monkeys and Rebellion are on the same wavelength - both cheeky rebels that enjoy causing a stir.

ST E P H A N E RATEL ANSWERS OUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS CAREER AND HIS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE REBELLION MOTOR RACING STABLE. MR RATEL, CAN YOU START BY TELLING US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AND HOW YOU CAME TO SET UP SRO MOTORSPORTS GROUP? Partly it was just the way life worked out, but above all it grew out of an enthusiasm. I studied in California, and when I finished studying, I started importing cars from the USA to Europe. I soon had a clientele of young, very wealthy car-lovers. In the 1990s, when classic cars went through a rough patch, I came up with the idea of organizing a Cannonball race from Paris to Saint-Tropez for my customers, to get things up and running again. It was a wild scheme, and I was taking quite a risk, but everyone loved it. So then I decided to hire a circuit and organize friendly races using Venturi cars, with the innovative idea of including amateur drivers. That was how the Venturi Gentlemen Drivers Trophy came into being. It was an instant success. After that, as time went by, more opportunities came up: a chance to take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours, organizing GT races with BPR, and then, in 1995, setting up SRO Motorsports Group. It started out as a bit of fun with friends, but everyone’s enthusiasm and enduring fascination with cars, plus networks and contacts, enabled me to seize the moment and play my cards right. WHAT IS IT ABOUT CARS THAT SO FASCINATES YOU? I come from a generation that is in love with freedom and

is especially drawn to anything that connotes aspirations. I’ve always been attracted by beautiful objects, beautiful machines. I’m even more fascinated by GT cars than cars in general. Apart from their technical complexity, I’m especially fond of good-looking, superbly engineered racing cars with famous names. IN YOUR VIEW, WHAT FACTORS HELPED FUEL THE REVIVAL IN GT RACING? GT races hark back to the beginnings of motorsports. In the 1920s, gentlemen drivers would race their Bentleys and then drive straight back onto the road. The cars were tourers prepared for circuit racing. Some of them are now the most expensive models in the world. As of the 1970s, GT races disappeared for about fifteen years. To my mind, that was just a blip in the history of car racing, and I’m proud we helped bring them back. It was high time! WHAT RACE HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR CAREER? In my 30-year career, a lot of races have had an impact on me. The Le Mans 24 Hours is undeniably an extraordinary experience for any owner of a car racing stable. Then there’s the Total 24 Hours of Spa - the race has come such a long way in terms of the range of brands that take part, audience diversity and its importance in the world of motorsports. But there’s also the Potrero de los Funes Circuit in Argentina, where the race takes place inside a volcano. All of those are incredible memories.

MR NAMIKI, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW CAME TO CREATE ADAMANT NAMIKI PRECISION? [Dear reader, my name Is Gianpaolo Turri. In this interview, I will answer on behalf of Mr. Namiki. I am the president of the company, and I oversee the watch business among the others.] Adamant-Namiki is the result of a recent merge of two companies that always belonged to the same family, the Namiki family. The company was founded by Mr. Kazu Namiki, father of Shoji Namiki, current CEO. It was created more than 80 years ago in Tokyo. It immediately established a unique technology to polish extremely hard materials like diamond, sapphire, ruby, and, more recently, ceramic and other hard materials. We have been active in many fields with our components and devices. The list includes the high-end watch industry, the semiconductor industry, medical technology, automotive, aerospace, LED devices, telecommunication, robotics and drones, and all the other fields where precision and the best materials must be employed. Our uniqueness is the passion and competence for precision technologies and hard materials, which has allowed our enterprises to flourish and to bring to the market multiple “only one” products. Creating “only one” products and technologies is our mantra and motto, developing technologies and product’s that no one else can make and that will change the lifestyle of our customers. W H AT T Y P E S O F T E C H N O L O G I E S D O E S ADAMANT NAMIKI PRECISION USE? Our zirconia ceramic is acclaimed and perceived as among the best available for high-end watches and medical devices and prostheses. Most of our manufacturing equipment and machines are conceived and built inhouse to provide added value to our customers. This combination and the continuous process of innovation and development allow us to remain at the forefront of materials development, precision machining, and surface optimization. We “grow” many of the materials that we use, starting from the best powders available on the market. We use unique technologies to form, sinter, shape, and

finish our products. This strategy allows us to be at the core of many high-tech devices and products. Creating the material and cutting, grinding, and polishing is at the heart of our know-how. It has been developed for 80 years, making our company one of the only that possess experience, innovation, quality, and passion in the world of hard materials. ADAMANT NAMIKI PRECISION SPECIALIZES AMONG OTHERS IN LABORATORY DIAMONDS. WHY THIS CREATIVE BIAS? Our history and DNA has shown us that innovation is the only way to survive and flourish in a world that becomes more and more competitive daily. We have created a mindset and company culture that is based on challenging the impossible and using the core competencies to create something new and unique. The world in which we live today is shaped and based on the sharing and processing of complex information. The need for faster and more efficient computing is increasing at a speed that overcomes Moore’s law or what today’s technology can achieve. The way ahead is helping the development of new devices that are capable of higher frequency and power density than those based on silicon. The ultimate material in the universe, at least to mankind knowledge, is diamond. Because of its mechanical, chemical, thermal, and electronic properties, diamond is the best material for multiple cutting-edge applications. Lab-grown diamond is better than natural diamond as it is purer, bigger, and can be an ethical and environmental choice for the future. Although we have developed this unique technology to grow diamonds for high-tech use, we were among the first to use it for the high-end watch industry. WITH ONLY 0.9MM DIAMETER, ADAMANT NAMIKI PRECISION HAS DESIGNED THE WORLD’S SMALLEST DC MOTOR. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS YOUR MOST DARING CREATION? Indeed, the manufacturing of the 0.9mm DC motor has pushed our creativity, passion, and technology to the limits. The internal components are as small as a human

REBELLION MAGAZINE 106

hair, but they need to have precision and durability that are unprecedented and impossible to manufacture with standard methodologies. We had to create new materials to make the most complex part of the motor, like a bulk metallic glass (BMG) that is moldable, harder, and more elastic than steel. When I look at what we have achieved in the last 20 years in many fields within our SME company, I am amazed and honored to serve my people. The 0.9mm DC motor, a new scratch-resistant material for watch cases with metallic look, and the largest synthetic diamond industrialized technology in the world for me are equivalent in terms of challenging the impossible and bringing value to our customers and partners.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO COLLABORATE SPECIFICALLY WITH SWISS WATCHMAKING? Many aspects of the swiss watchmaking were attractive for us, and vice versa we have been attractive for Swiss watchmakers. Japan and Switzerland are similar in terms of country stability, culture, quality, innovation, and spirit. Japan made and Swiss-made are possibly the most renowned manufacturing trademark in the world when it comes to quality and high-tech. Our materials and technologies have always been synergic and compatible with the Swiss watchmaking. As we strive to partner with the best and to provide our “only one” to markets with high added value, the choice to bring our product to the Swiss watch industry has been a natural consequence. This Swiss-Japanese partnership has allowed both parties to develop and reach success. We have delivered many unique, dream pieces to life thanks to our handcraft and high-end quality. In parallel, we have established manufacturing technologies to achieve high quality and the right price for products destined to larger series. We have transferred some of our technologies to our partners to continue production with the more stringent requirements of the Swiss law. This experience has allowed us to change our business model, which now involves developing R&D and new products and

FOR SEVERAL YEARS, YOU HAVE BEEN ACTIVELY COLLABORATING WITH REBELLION. HOW DID THIS PARTNERSHIP BEGIN? We have already been partnering with the LEMO organization for many years. The collaboration stemmed from the shared values and the recognized quality that both our companies provide. We approached Rebellion as we felt a certain connection in terms of what we aspire in our groups. We knew that a brand with such a DNA, based on innovation, excellence, cutting edge materials, could be the perfect partner to bring something unique and unprecedented to the market. Rebellion CEO, Mr. Bouhadra, visited our company in Japan during the preparation for a race at the Fuji racetrack. On that occasion, the two groups brainstormed on possible high-end ideas, and a joint project was born on that very day: Mr. Namiki and Mr. Bouhadra shook hands and said that they would bring the first diamond tourbillon to the world. Only six months later, this crazy project was introduced at Basel World 2019. WHAT VALUES, WHAT IDEALS DO YOU SHARE WITH REBELLION? The passion for innovation, for quality, for challenging the status quo, for bringing value to the market and at the same time accelerating the development of new technologies that will benefit our customers. The synergies between the various field in which we both operate have strengthened the relationship. They will push both organizations to explore new materials, manufacturing technologies, and products to serve in the high-tech challenges that we face. We love our people, those that make possible the innovation and realization that we bring to the market. We love our products and technologies, and we infuse in them all our knowledge and emotions. We love our customers, and we help them fulfill their dreams and needs. Rebellion and Adamant-Namiki is a “match made in heaven” that is destined to grow and bring more success in the future. AFTER THE SUCCESS OF THE WEAP-ONE WATCH, WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT PROJECTS IN COLLABORATION WITH REBELLION? These, of course, are secret and extremely confidential. We develop new materials with other industries and markets, and recently, one of our materials in the biotechnology field won many prizes worldwide. INSPIRED BY THE BEAUT Y AND EXTREME MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS OF THE FRENCH ALPS, THE RIP’NWUD ADVENTURE BEGAN IN CHAMONIX, WHERE KEVAN L AUNCHED HIS ECO-FRIENDLY SKI BRAND IN 1997. A PASSION FOR SKIING, DEDICATED CRAFTSMANSHIP AND A PROFOUND RESPECT FOR NATURE GO INTO THE MAKING OF EVERY PAIR OF RIP’N WUD SKIS, WHICH ARE MADE FROM THE HIGHEST-QUALIT Y SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS. MEET KEVAN BEANE, WHO HAD THE BRILLIANT IDEA OF CREATING SKI BRAND RIP’N WUD.

REBELLION MAGAZINE 114

HAND-CRAFTED FROM WOOD All the wood used to make Rip’n Wud skis comes from replanted forests, be it the white ash wood used in core construction or the walnut and wild cherry wood used for finishes. The materials are carefully selected for strength and durability. Rip’n Wud skis are the result of a lifetime’s investment in research and development to minimize the environmental impacts of consumption and production. They offer an exceptional glide, combining pleasure with absolute comfort. Whether you are a beginner or an expert and whether you prefer downhill or freestyle, Rip’n Wud has the perfect skis for you. And for those who want to try out the Rip’n Wud ski collection for themselves, there are outdoor test centres across the French and Swiss Alps. RIP’N WUD AND REBELLION, A NATURAL PARTNERSHIP Every ski that leaves the Rip’n Wud workshop is part of a limited series, and the company is staffed by former Olympic and World Cup skiing professionals who pay especial attention to customers’ individual needs. Experience in top-level sport and the philosophy that goes with it are things the Rip’n Wud and Rebellion teams have in common, so it was easy to make the next step and produce co-branded state-of-the-art sports equipment. On the Swiss side, Rebellion dreamed up a version of the Twenty-One Watch, a chronograph with automatic movement, 3 HANDS and a 38-hour power reserve, in a classic sports style ideally suited to Rip’n Wud, while the French company Rip’n Wud came up with the Grand Sport (GS) Rebellion ski design - a model that offers skiers a perfect balance of precision, excitement and comfort. Made in a limited series of just 50 pairs, these skis will guarantee thrills to the sensation-seekers who have the good fortune to ride them.

As you see it, how has Rip’n Wud changed the skiing experience? We’ve been sticklers for quality from the outset. All our skis are hand-crafted from individually selected top-quality materials, and every pair looks different from all the others. Using ash wood for the cores enables us to fine-tune them with a degree of accuracy that makes our skis exceptionally stable and easy to handle in all mountain conditions. This is one of the reasons for the brand’s continued success. It’s now 20 years since we started offering the unique experience of skiing on eco-friendly, locally made wooden skis. Rip’nWud now offers a full range of high-quality hand-crafted ski designs for all types of skiing, from carving to freeride, touring and big mountain riding. What inspired you to join forces with Rebellion? We have similar visions and messages. Rebellion and Rip’n Wud both produce small series of hand-crafted items and place a strong emphasis on environmentally-friendly, small-scale production. It’s the opposite

of the mass market. Above all, we know the importance of personalized client relationships and top-notch customer service. The fact that we instantly got along with each other and the success of the partnership is down to those shared values. What fundamental values do you try to pass on? My goal is to help people rethink the way they consume - to change the way skiers approach buying a pair of skis and to make a positive contribution by giving something back to nature, which has shaped my life and made me who I am today. Most of all, I want to educate the younger generation, who are increasingly turning to nature-oriented sports like skiing, by providing them with long-lasting, eco-friendly equipment that combines aesthetics with comfort and performance. Rip’n Wud is unique in that all its skis come with an unlimited five-year guarantee. Some of my first customers have had the same pair of skis for over 20 years and are still using them.

MADE IN THE ALPS In a mountain hideaway in Chamonix (France), Rip’n Wud developed a concept way ahead of its time: high-performance skis entirely made of wood. From an original idea, it has blossomed into a fully-fledged success: the company, now based in Annecy, has become a major player in the ski market. Developed by skiers for skiers, Rip’n Wud varies shapes, ski flex and tunings to provide high-quality skis that guarantee an easy ride, high performance and intense sensations. Today, the brand offers a full collection of hand-made skis, catering to the needs of a wide variety of skiers, from people who ski occasionally for fun to professionals. All its skis are made entirely from environmentally-friendly recyclable materials.

WE MEET WITH A FAMILY BUSINESS, RESPECTFUL OF TRADITION BUT WITH ITS SIGHTS FIRMLY SET ON THE FUTURE. A FAMILY AFFAIR A passion for jewellery undeniably runs in the Rojas family. In his day (1961), the family’s grandfather already collaborated with the biggest Swiss brand of jewellery and watches. His son, Francisco Rojas, spent his youth in the family workshop, where he was predestined for a career as an artisan. Following his training at the School of Jewellery in Geneva, Francisco Rojas founded his own jewellery workshop in 1989, and later his company in 2000, under the name Jeweltech. A few years later, his daughters joined the adventure, ensuring the continuity of the family business. Providing unwavering support to their father, together they have allowed the house to design turnkey creations and offer a wide range of services, such as jewellery creation, jewellery and watchmaking setting, laser engraving and 3D-modelling. Their creations are also manufactured with the greatest respect for Swiss standards. All of these services are done in a responsible and ethical manner, just like their RJC certification, in the future the wish of the house is to ensure 100% traceability of precious metals.

set the clasp on a handbag, a pair of glasses or even a speedometer … the list of services is as long as the scope of creation is wide. From the designer’s initial sketch to the final product, Jeweltech writes the story of a unique piece, the fruit of your imagination and their masterful expertise. Satisfy your desires and treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind piece: this is the goal of Custom House Geneva, a complementary partner to Jeweltech, scheduled to open in late 2020. An ambitious project and surely just one of many, Custom House is the brainchild of the highly creative Sarah Rojas and Barbara, a stone setter. In their inventive minds, sprouted the idea of a diamond with a traditional appearance but fluorescent after dark. A creation marrying tradition and technology in the image of Jeweltech and Custom House Geneva, but above all, a novelty worthy of Rebellion. Indeed, Custom House Geneva already relies on the unfailing support of the Swiss house, which supplies it with speedometers, amongst other things. Could this be the sign of a possible future collaboration? Rebellion x Custom House Geneva, watch this space!

A NEW SPARKLE: THE FOUNDING OF CUSTOM HOUSE GENEVA Today, thanks to the vivid imagination of the fourth Rojas girls, the family business has taken a new and exciting direction. More modern, more eclectic, Jeweltech honours its fundamental values while daring to take bespoke items to the next level. The idea? A complete A-Z service offer available for clients, allowing them to imagine a 100% personalized creation. Modernize an old chronograph,
