Message From the President & CEO

MR. D-MARS

“We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what’s in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense.” – Barack Obama I am extremely proud to recognize the Top 50 Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs for our third consecutive year. Over the course of the years, we’ve honored and recognized some of the best of the best in Houston and this year is no exception. We’ve been fortunate to constantly evolve and improve each year, which is why we decided to implement a few changes this year. For one, we included attorneys in this list of professionals and entrepreneurs and secondly, we created a special designation for “Family Affair,” recognizing those professionals who have devoted themselves to creating a brand with each generation working together to build a legacy for future generations. d-mars.com is a family business, so it just made sense that we award those who also serve as an example of generational wealth and success. As black people, we also have a responsibility to help other black people succeed – by setting the example, opening the doors and communicating with one another. In business, relationships are invaluable. Our top professionals and entrepreneurs know the value of relationships as well as the importance of sharing their knowledge to inspire the next generation. dmars.com is proud to be a platform for these exemplary professionals and entrepreneurs and we are still listening and just as excited as ever to recognize them for their massive success. To the honorees, we appreciate all that you do and all that you’ve done. Keep being great! Sincerely, Keith J. Davis, Sr. President & CEO d-mars.com

Message from Vice President, Ms. Kimberly Floyd

Each professional and entrepreneur we celebrate in this directory understands their role as a dream builder. A dream builder isn’t some omnipotent entity; the ability to build dreams lies within us all. Our community is full of corporate executives, entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders – those who understand success doesn’t happen overnight. It is a continuous progression, which involves sacrifice and determination to endure the valleys along the journey. Dream builders understand that a valley is not a failure or the end, but a lesson to build upon for the next endeavor. We only have to delve deeper and possess the fortitude to persevere to reach So it means so much to me to be able to recognize Houston’s Top greatness. We salute our professionals and entrepreneurs for their 50 Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs for giving us all a reason strength and courageousness in being real-life dream builders. to go further and try harder. I want all the honorees to know, we’re still rooting for, we’re still proud of you and we are grateful for Ms. Kimberly Floyd your successes.. Vice President d-mars.com Kevin “Brother D-MARS” Davis Senior Vice President d-mars.com In order to be a successful business professional, you cannot be afraid to take risks. If all you ever aspire to be is mediocre, then you will always play it safe. Our honorees didn’t play it safe. They were able to persevere and had the discipline to keep trying, not viewing failures or setbacks as defeat. Obstacles build character and resilience. The most successful professionals and entrepreneurs aren’t the men and women who had an easy path to the top… they are the ones who battled through adversity and struggles to get to the top.

r. George C. Fraser is Chairman and CEO of FraserNet, Inc., a company he founded some 28 years ago with the vision to lead a global networking movement that brings together diverse human resources to increase opportunities for people of African descent. He is considered by many to be a new voice for African Americans and one of the foremost authorities on economic development, networking and building effective relationships. While Dr. Fraser’s accomplishments are significant, his beginnings were very humble. He was born in Brooklyn, NY into a family of 11 children (eight boys and three girls). When Fraser’s mom become mentally ill, his dad, who was a cab driver, couldn’t care for 11 children, so he was orphaned at age three and spent 14 years in foster homes. Growing up on the streets of New York, he had little hope and no expectations. Although his guidance counselor suggested he drop out of high school, Dr. Fraser graduated from high school with a vocational diploma in woodworking because the school system did not consider him college material. Thank God Dr. Fraser felt differently…for several years, he mopped floors on the midnight shift at LaGuardia Airport while he paid his way through college. Later, in 1996, he graduated from the prestigious Dartmouth College; Minority Business Executive Program. In 1999, he was awarded the Honorary Doctorate degree of Humane Letters from Jarvis Christian College. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree in Philosophy from Jarvis Christian College. Dr. Fraser rose to leadership positions with Procter & Gamble, the United Way and Ford Motor Company. It was some 28 years ago that God unveiled His real purpose for George. Dr. Fraser went on to become the author of four critically acclaimed books: “Success Runs in Our Race: The Complete Guide to Effective Networking in the African American Community;” “Race For Success: The Ten

Best Business Opportunities for Blacks in America;” “Click: Ten Truths for Building Extraordinary Relationships;” as well as his most recent children’s book entitled “Who Would Have Thunk It?” Dr. Fraser is also the publisher of the award-winning SuccessGuide Worldwide: The Networking Guide to Black Resources. He is the founder of the annual PowerNetworking Conference, in which thousands of Black professionals, business owners and community leaders gather and learn the art and science of networking, entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Dr. Fraser is the Chairman of Phoenix Village Academy; which consists of three afro-centric charter schools that serve Cleveland’s inner-city children. A popular speaker and author, Dr. Fraser’s inspiring talks on success principles, effective networking, wealth creation, business ethics and valuing diversity are as popular among corporate professionals as they are among college students.

has selected, reprinted and distributed worldwide five of Dr. Fraser’s speeches – a first for any professional speaker in America, regardless of color. Dr. Fraser has received more than 350 awards and citations from around the world, including being selected for the prestigious “History Makers” program stored at the Library of Congress. Upscale Magazine named him one of the “Top 50 Power Brokers in Black America” and Black Enterprise Magazine called him “Black America’s #1 Networker” and featured him on a cover issue. Dr. Fraser has appeared on seven national magazine covers and was recently inducted into the Minority Business Hall of Fame and Museum. Television host and journalist Tavis Smiley called Dr. Fraser a “visionary with the rare combination of leadership and management skills.” Mr. Fraser was featured in the New York Times bestseller, “Masters of Networking,” along with Secretary Colin Powell.

Dr. Fraser has been married to his wife His views have been solicited by media Nora Jean for 42 years and they have as diverse as CNN and the Wall Street two adult sons: Kyle and Scott and one Journal. he son of a school principal and a librarian, Rod Paige rose from humble roots in segregated small-town Mississippi all the way to the United States’ Secretary of Education. From 2001 to 2005, Paige served in the first George W. Bush administration. As the Nation’s top educator, he championed student achievement and employed “best of breed” solutions to raise national standards of educational excellence. A member of the Presidential Cabinet, Paige spearheaded the implementation of the historic No Child Left Behind Act, with the goal of reinvigorating America’s education system. Paige forged his reputation for seeking out and putting in place innovative approaches to systemic academic improvement when he was Dean of the College of Education at Texas Southern University. At TSU, he established the University’s Center for Excellence in Urban Education. He has also shown a knack for inclusive leadership, first as a school board trustee and then as Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, the nation’s seventh largest district at the time. When he was appointed superintendent in 1994, he was the first African-American in the district’s history to serve in that position. In 1999, Paige was named one of the top two educators in the country by the Council of the Great City Schools. She was born in Beaumont, Texas but now resides in Houston, Texas. She received her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and has a master’s degree in Economic Development. She is also a member of Behind the Bench, The National Basketball Wives Association, which raises money and devotes time to charities on a local and national level through heightened public social awareness. As a female, and facing many of the issues that young women face today, Ford determined her mission was to help young girls improve their quality of life. Her focus is to create an environment that is inclusive of young women in all communities to ensure they lead purposeful, active, healthy and responsible lives. She was President of the My Inc. Foundation (My Innocence Never Compromised) from 2008-2010, which served to improve the quality of life for inner-city girls by providing programs that stimulate their social, physical, intellectual and moral development. She and her husband created the TJ Ford Basketball Foundation in 2010 to make an impact on young boys and girls by giving back to their community with the goal of helping participants achieve their academic, personal and civil goals. The TJ Ford Program firmly believes that education is the driving force to help children reach the goal of being productive individuals. The program is not solely based on basketball, it’s one that promotes academics and positive attitudes. In 2011, she founded Project Beautiful Me to create a platform for young girls to focus in on their inner beauty. Giving back is her passion. She has committed to helping young girls in the Houston and

In 2008, Jeffrey and Pamela faced the toughest challenge of their lives, which distracted their attention away from entrepreneurial activities. Pamela was diagnosed with Ependymoma; spinal cord cancer. Unfortunately, the surgery to remove the cancerous tumor resulted in Pamela becoming paraplegic, and for that cause, Jeffrey gave up his entrepreneur role and took on the role of a full-time home health aide for his wife. A diagnosis of cancer certainly changed both of their lives; however, as a result of Jeffrey’s experience in aiding his wife’s recovery, he developed a deep sense of passion for people with illnesses and injuries that affect their livelihood. In 2009, when Jeffrey and Pamela became aware of how “on the job” injuries negatively affect people’s livelihoods, they felt a deep sense of passion for these individuals, and as a result, Jeffrey and Pamela founded Team Work Ready, Inc. (formerly Injured Workers Network, Inc.), and made its primary mission to help injured workers. Jeffrey and Pamela are also philanthropists who actively support and provide contributions to many nonprofit organizations, such as the Senior Citizen Center of Greater Northside Houston, Men of Change and various inner-city schools. Because Jeffrey is armed with a passion for empowering the youth in the community, he co-founded the successful Zoe Learning Academy. They are both members of Constable Ruben Davis Advisory Board in Fort Bend County, Precinct 2, where they currently reside.

His uncle suggested that he cut his truck to make it into a wrecker. A local institution was born. After years of hard work and paying his dues, Palmer founded Autos R Us Collision Center, a 25,000-square-foot facility located on 10 acres in northeast Houston. This wellknown auto body and collision repair shop has provided customers with quality towing, repairing and restoring services for 25 years. Palmer did not just build a company; he built refuge for the soul. His company was built on the foundation of Christian principles, specifically those that adhere to the Maximize Manhood Curriculum of Dr. Edwin Louis Cole. When one visits his collision center, vehicles aren’t the only bodies leaving brand new. Palmer always lends a word of encouragement to his customers and often engages in lighthearted and enlightening Christian discourse that leaves his clients with a refreshed, positive disposition.

Rob Coats

2015 TOP P&E

R

Rob Coats, known internationally as “The Connectionaire,” has been able to measure success in currency that is tangible and also intangible. He is an award-winning entrepreneur, capturing a 2010 Micro Entrepreneur of the Year award. To say that Rob has a Midas touch would be an understatement. Since his inception, Coats has always deemed the impossible possible. Where others see fortresses of impenetrability, he seizes the opportunity to unlock the entryway. Coats’ greatest quality is never taking NO for an answer. He broke into the marketing industry at age 20 while attending Wright State University and took it by storm. He broke sales records within a year (certain marks as early as one week with the company) and was making six figures as a junior while still landing on the Dean’s List. While most college kids were partying, Coats was focused on developing a strategy that would take him beyond the mundane existence that most experience after graduation (a 9-to5 and student loan debt). Debbie went back to work in the retail industry for a company out of New Zealand doing setups for their brand, however the desire and vision to open her own store began to weigh heavily on her heart and she decided, if I can endure Hurricane Katrina, I can do anything! Having already applied for a DBA in 2007, Debbie began searching on Google for information about opening a retail store and getting different contacts. A pivotal change came when Debbie was introduced to a trade show in Las Vegas about buying items to put in a retail boutique. Still playing it safe, Debbie’s plan was to start the business online, but was encouraged to look for a location. A tedious task proved to be worthwhile when she came across a perfect location that catered to women, was in a good area and the space was perfect! From there, Debbie reached out to the leasing agent, told the agent what she was trying to do and her future goals. In two weeks, she was handed the keys and opened Shoe Fetage’ 30 days later!

Prior to working for Allstate, Jones worked with the Nextel Corporation prior to the merger with Sprint and received multiple awards for “Top Wireless Consultant” in Houston and the Southwestern district for exceeding sales goals. As a top sales associate, she was selected as “Retail Ambassador” and conducted training programs for pre-merger sales associates and facilitated the Ambassador program during the initial stages of the corporate merger, thereby ensuring seamless transaction for both peers and management. Jones is proud to volunteer with Volunteer Houston, which the Allstate Foundation supported with a grant in honor of her volunteer efforts in the community. Volunteering is an extension of what Jones does every day – protecting people and preparing them for the future. She also volunteers as a mentor with the U.S. Dream Academy, which seeks to build a youth-focused program that speaks to the alarming cycle of multigenerational involvement in the criminal justice system, effectively lifting the children of prisoners, and those failing in school, out of this devastating cycle. Through aggressive and innovative academic enrichment and mentoring, the U.S. Dream Academy is working to build the dreams of the children with a family history of incarceration and those falling behind in school; and provide the tools that they need to achieve their dreams.

The best piece of advice Drake can give to people who want to start their own business is to get with people they trust and don’t trust everybody. Additionally, try to gain as much knowledge and understanding of the business that they can. Drake truly loves what she does and gets the most enjoyment out of interacting with Grooves’ customers. “People know that when they come to Grooves, they have a friend. People meet me and they think, ‘I’ve known this woman forever.’ I’m just a cool person who loves to talk and interact with people.” Now, with the help of her family, she manages a multi-million dollar operation in the wild world of hip-hop nightlife, corporate events, concerts and live shows, accommodating more than 3,000 patrons each weekend.

Henceforth, a need for an interpreter! An interpreter is one who translates an instruction into the appropriate language and executes it before moving forward. Under the inspiration and guidance of CEO and founder Ramone Harper, BNB Consulting & Associates was created to assist corporations, media venues, government, ministries and entertainers to interpret their visions and communicate effectively with: employees, shareholders, partners, clients, customers, congregations, supporters and more. He is originally from Detroit, Mich., but lived the majority of his teenage years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He is married to his life, business and ministry partner, Verily, and they are the proud parents of three beautiful D.I.V.A.S. and one son. More importantly, he loves Jesus Christ and accepted his call to preach and teach in November of 2007.

“The Interpreter Has Arrived”

revolutionary modern day Dream Interpreter has arrived, and is currently empowering ministries and businesses to identify, assess and strategically implement their visions! In this capitalistic world we often find great leaders, with even greater visions destined to impact our nation. Leaders who are ready to take their mission to the masses come equipped with experience, 108

education and skills. Yet they often embark on this venture to eventually feel tired, worn out and alone. Longing for a true support base, leaders can become despondent, feeling like no one understands them, no one is qualified to help them and no one is as passionate about the vision as they are. The problem isn’t with the visionary or the vision. If the employees and clients can’t see what the visionary sees, they can’t fully commit themselves to making that vision a reality.

Ramone Harper is a highly sought after consultant to Mega Churches, entertainers and businesses across the nation. The tremendous impact and success of BNB has been recently featured on television programs such as Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Praise the Lord and Daystar’s Celebration! He has also helped launch the comedy career of comedian Marcus D. Wiley, who is now a part of the nationally syndicated Yolanda Adams Morning Show, Director/Playwright Robert Simms and national gospel recording artist and ASCAP award recipient, James Fortune and FIYA. With proven experience in strategic partnerships, leadership training, strategic planning, marketing and project management, Harper and the BNB team are a priceless asset to any organization.
