“How many lives will you touch? How many lives will you inspire? How many diamond relationships will you build? Diamonds may not be forever, but the impact you have on the lives of others will be. Don’t take it for granted” -MR. D-MARS
Message From the President & CEO Rewarding, worthwhile, and rooted in Black excellence-Those are just a few words to describe the past 25 years as I, along with a dedicated team, have worked to build a platform and go-to point for visionaries, customers and community members hoping to be inspired, informed and educated on matters relating to the business industry. Being a supporting advocate for business owners and corporate professionals across the state of Texas, I have had the pleasure of providing a bar of excellence for those receiving their well-deserved flowers, but the journey to get to this point hasn’t always been an easy one. I have experienced several highs, but I’ve also encountered some hard blows along the way while trying to build a lasting legacy that would create a sense of pride amongst those who look like me: Professionals and entrepreneurs of color who work hard to grow in business. Like many of you, I remember searching for opportunities that some were hesitant to give me, however, when my time came, I not only seized the opportunity— I excelled. I persevered. And, with God’s strength and guidance, I never backed down from the challenges that I encountered. And while the road hasn’t always been easy, I wouldn’t change it because even the difficulties have contributed to d-mars.com’s success. This year’s Top 50 Professionals and Entrepreneurs event is a celebration of our momentous quarter-century
in business. We honor those from diverse walks of success within all fields. We salute Black influencers who are creating their own path, inspiring others, and bringing innovation to different areas of business and professions. Together, you all redefine the essence of community constituents paying it forward. To be an honoree forges a shared respect within an exclusive league of peers. The room is filled with ambition and priceless connections are being formed. I am grateful for the continued support of professionals and their businesses that have been the heartbeat of sustained excellence. You all are proof that the Black community drives progress through our economic power. I would like to thank our loyal readers and sponsors who have helped make this publication what it is today. Since 1999, you all have given us the support we need to achieve longevity. Sincerely,

Brad “Scarface” Jordan 2024 SUPER TRAILBLAZER
S
carface, born Brad Terrence Jordan, commands a profound influence in the landscape of American rap and record production. Born on Nov. 9, 1970, he emerged prominently as a member of the Geto Boys, a renowned hip-hop group hailing from Houston, Texas. Scarface’s roots trace back to the South Acres (Crestmont Park) neighborhood in Houston, where he spent his formative years. The Source acknowledged his lyrical prowess by ranking him at #16 on their Top 50 Lyricists of All Time list in 2012, while About.com placed him at #6 on the 50 Greatest MCs of Our Time (1987–2007). In a transformative move, Scarface embraced Islam in 2006. His early career unfolded as DJ Akshen, working with Lil’ Troy’s Short Stop, a local record label in Houston. The transition to the moniker “Scarface” paid homage to the 1983 film of the same name. Signing with Rap-A-Lot Records, Scarface replaced a departing member in the Geto Boys, contributing to the success of their second album, “Grip It! On That

Other Level” (1989). Despite facing resistance from mainstream platforms due to their explicit lyrics, the album propelled the Geto Boys to Southern hip-hop stardom. Scarface's solo endeavors gained momentum with the release of “Mr. Scarface Is Back” in 1991. Over the years, he achieved critical and commercial success with albums like “The Diary” and “The Last of a Dying Breed.” Notably, “The Fix” (2002) featured collaborations with Nas, Jay-Z, and others. Scarface reunited with the Geto Boys for their final album as a trio, “The Foundation” (2005). Throughout the 2000s, he made guest appearances on various tracks, showcasing his versatility. In 2022, Judge Williams was elected to her second term as presiding judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 3 in Houston, Texas. She took the bench on Jan. 1, 2019, making history as one of the “Houston 19.” Social media pegged her and 18 other Black women running for judge as “Black Girl Magic.” All 19 women took the bench in 2019, forever changing the Harris County judiciary. Judge Williams served in 2021 and 2023 as the administrative judge of the county’s four civil courts at law. Before becoming a judge, Williams practiced for 23 years in the areas of employment law, business litigation, criminal prosecution and defense and civil rights. Her background also includes serving

as corporate counsel for a Fortune 500 restaurant chain and nonprofit organizations. Judge Williams has trial experience in federal and state courts in Texas and Tennessee. As a judge in Harris County, the third most populated county in the nation which includes very diverse communities, Judge Williams is sensitive to her court’s impact on the lives of Harris County citizens. The county courts hear the real-life daily challenges the average person faces— eviction appeals, property disputes, contractual disputes, collections, and personal injury cases. Oftentimes, people come to these courts without an attorney. The parties must be assured that their case is heard by a neutral, impartial, fair-minded judge— one that abides by the code of judicial conduct and honors the rule of law; a judge that exercises patience, open-mindedness, objectivity, care, and respect for rule of law, with integrity, honor, and legal competence. Judge Williams is committed to serving in this way. She
works to maintain a court that balances empathy and compassion with the administration of justice by the Rule of Law. Judge Williams enjoys mentoring students who aspire to be attorneys. Believing as former First Lady Michelle Obama wrote, that girls “cannot aspire to be what they do not see,” Williams believes in empowering young women and girls of color to see the infinite possibilities available to them. Judge Williams is happily married with a beautiful daughter. She enjoys live music, working out, reading, and writing. Judge Williams dreams of scriptwriting for legal and courtroom dramas and comedies for television and film. JUDGE LASHAWN A. nthony Kirk Williams, MD, was born in Marshall, Texas, to Laura Veasey Williams and one of the first Black policemen in Marshall, Judge Alphonza Williams.
He often states and acknowledges the many bloodlines that intersect within him are from the pages of American, Texas and African American history. As a child, if one were to ask Dr. Williams what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would rapidly respond and say a veterinarian and a Dallas Cowboy. After graduating from Marshall Senior High School, he attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, earning a B.S. in Chemistry and graduating magna cum laude. He was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Williams chose Baylor College of Medicine’s MD/Ph.D. program over other programs, however, he later decided against a Ph.D. Dr. Williams also trained in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, which included significant operating room time on cases with famed cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Michael E. Debakey. He has fond memories of world dignitaries and leaders who were flown in, seeking Dr. Debakey’s skilled hands for surgery. As a practicing physician balancing all his interests, which include medicine, writing, real estate development, commercial and residential building, and exotic ranching, emergency medicine provided the needed flexibility. Dr. Williams was a principal in the development of the Tower Medical Center Systems of Texas network in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange), which was the first solely physician-owned clinic network of its kind in the early 1990s. Physicians at all sites, primary and emergency care locations, were trained to care for the industrial patient. The model was the first of its type in the country. Dr. Williams also fondly recalls wearing the hat of an MBA Healthcare Executive as a young physician. He presented to the top tenet hospital executives in the country. He was engaged as a consultant by Dr. Peter Scardino, now Chair of Urology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and Baylor College of Medicine, as they later rolled out their
initial managed care points of service models with Baylor College of Medicine’s One Care.
his first and only book entitled “I Just Look Like This,” which is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble outlets.
Dr. Williams’ real estate interests include the development of small townhomes and zero lot line subdivisions, multiple homes of his own, some featured in national magazines and catalogs, and commercial projects that include multiple hotels and the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, a sister hospital to Houston’s St. Joseph’s Hospital. He developed the “5K Ranch” over 25 years ago in Marshall, which reflected his childhood interest and love for animals. However, after 25 years, he sold it following the birth of his last two children. The ranch was the first and only African American-owned exotic ranch in the country of its type. It even traded with several major zoos throughout the country, including the largest-- the San Diego Zoo.
Dr. Williams is a father to five young men and one daughter: Anthony Kirk Williams, II, Dr. Austin Kyle Williams, Dr. Alexander Kuykendall Williams, Dr. Adam Kristopher Williams, 6-year-old Asia Kai Williams, 4-year-old Axel Kirk Williams, and two young men he calls his two oldest sons: Alfio Randall Veasey and Kansas City Chiefs’ all-time leading rusher Jamaal Charles. He has been married twice, formerly to Dr. Margaret Lang-Williams and currently to Abagado Adriana Cabrera Williams.

Dr. Barry J.W. Franklin, CFSP 2024 SUPER P&E
Dr. Franklin graduated from A.S. Johnston High School and went to Austin Community College and Southwest State University, majoring in business. He graduated with honors and distinction from the Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas, in August 1990. The Board of Regents of the Christian Bible Institute & Seminary bestowed upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 8, 2013. He has served as Minister of Music for Baptist, Methodist and Catholic churches throughout Texas. He is also a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Austin.
“Do all you can, while you can, so you can be all that you can be before you can’t do no more.” This has been the personal credo of Dr. Barry J.W. “The Shepherd” Franklin, CFSP, since he was 5 years old. He was born and raised on the east side of Austin, Texas, which was coined the “redlined poverty” area. His life was considered to be a miracle as he was born to Henrietta Oliver Franklin, a woman who was told she had a tumor at the age of 45, and his father at the age of 52, Tom Morgan Franklin. At the age of 5, he began to play the piano at his neighbor’s house. He was drawn to church as a magnet to metal and looked forward to night services at the Sweet Home Baptist Church in west Austin. It was there that the musician would put him in her lap and place his fin82

gers on the Hammond organ. Dr. Franklin was baptized at the Olivet Baptist Church in Austin at the age of 8 and joined the youth choir. His sister, the late Eva Franklin, was a remarkable educator who graduated from Huston-Tillotson University and taught him to read before kindergarten. Dr. Franklin loved to read and was given the opportunity to skip the 5th and 6th grades, but his mother declined the offer. While in elementary school, Franklin and his best friend, the late Minister Curtis Lee Carter, would go through the neighborhood and do chores for the senior citizens, cleaning houses, raking leaves, going to the store, etc. On weekends, the neighborhood kids would play at church and funeral homes. He would be the musician and the mortician. Later in life, he realized his childhood roles in the neighborhood games would become his life’s ministry.
Dr. Franklin married his high school sweetheart, Marie A. Penn Franklin, in 1984. Together, they have blessed churches and families, and sent countless young people to college. Barry J.W. Franklin, LLC, has been the pillar of a life-changing business, from FOAM Recording Studio to A Life Celebration By Franklin, a unique place to celebrate an end-of-life journey. Several successful funeral businesses have been created and guided by his wisdom and knowledge throughout Texas. He, along with adopted brothers Troy B. Smith, Rev. F.A. Green and the late Rev. Eddie R. Johnson, started a powerful group known as PUSH HOPE (Professional Undertakers Serving Humbly Helping Other People Every day), which has given well over $100,000 to churches, organizations, and families. Dr. Franklin is a professional member of multiple national, state and local funeral professional associations and attends conventions and seminars consistently throughout the year. Dr. Franklin wants to be remembered as one who had an influence and was effective in this world.

rena Hunter, reflecting on her journey from the age of 11, never anticipated that practicing on her friend’s hair would evolve into a flourishing career spanning 30 years. Hailing from a family of hairstylists, Trena’s roots trace back to her mother and grandmother who owned a salon named New Look during her childhood. In 2009, she made the significant move from Camden, Arkansas, a small town, to Texas. The hairstylist, driven by a desire for change after completing high school and college, sold her belongings and relocated to Houston with a meager $300, residing on an air mattress in her brother's one-bedroom apartment. Although she secured a job, Trena faced a setback when she was laid off shortly after. In 2013, she made a pivotal decision to enroll in Regency Beauty Institute’s cosmetology program. Despite encountering financial challenges during the enrollment

process, her father became her saving grace by covering the monthly payments, allowing her to attend. After graduating from the program in 2014, she embarked on her entrepreneurial journey, opening a mini salon suite that marked the inception of New Look Hair Studio. The subsequent months brought unforeseen heartbreak, with Trena's father being diagnosed with congestive heart failure and passing away. His monthly notes of encouragement, especially one that resonated– "Life will get easier if you trust Him" – became a source of inspiration, propelling her to dedicate herself to honoring her father's legacy through her hairstyling career. Trena continued her work in the mini salon suite until 2019 when she took a significant step by opening her first storefront salon in April. Starting with just one client on the first day in 2014, she has now built a substantial clientele of about 2,000 in-
dividuals and is currently expanding with plans to open a second location later this year. Outside her professional pursuits, Trena finds joy in fitness, quality time with family and friends, journaling, teaching cosmetology students, and exploring new destinations through travel. With a commitment to impacting lives and making her father proud, she encourages everyone to discover their purpose and be passionate about it, emphasizing the transformative power it holds. ark Norman was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, he had a burning desire for entrepreneurship, admiring the local store owners, snow cone stands and dry cleaners owners. Shortly after college, Norman began his first endeavor into entrepreneurship with a customer T-shirt business. Recognizing he needed to get a better grasp of business, he continued to focus on his job in corporate America to develop his business acumen. After setting his roots in Houston, Norman’s next attempt at business ownership came in the form of a janitorial service. He recognized the challenges associated with percurrent of customers without a name associated. Trying to raise children at the same time, which proved to be a challenge he could not commit the time to, Norman was determined he needed something more turnkey.
Nine and a half years ago, Norman was then encouraged by his wife as she had the idea of purchasing a franchise. As a result, the first franchise store was purchased, and entrepreneurship was firmly cemented. After the initial taste of franchising, Norman’s aggressive nature kicked in and a year and a half later, he began to grow, building and opening two stores within an 11-month period. Norman then decided it was time to leave corporate America. While looking for sites to develop, his vision was slowed a bit by the pandemic. However, Norman remained focused and began to expand his dream, branching out into other brands and diversifying his network. This kept him poised to continue his vision post-pandemic. K
eith R. Wilson is a bright, enthusiastic, and dedicated young public law attorney who during his budding career at the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, has already achieved extraordinary successes and obtained the admiration of colleagues for his work ethic, industriousness and collaborative approach to problem-solving. In his position as legal counsel, Wilson operates as a solution integrator for METRO, serving as the legal expert on real estate matters and project delivery methods for various construction projects on behalf of the authority. Wilson has spearheaded several real property and real estate projects, which have propelled METRO to the state and national stage in terms of innovative and efficient approaches to transit development. The most notable project that Wilson impressively spearheaded, however, was the negotiation and implementation of Houston’s first bus rapid transit line, the Uptown METRORapid Silver Line. To lead an infrastructure project of this magnitude (for a transit authority serving nearly four million residents in the Greater Houston area) is nothing short of masterful. Wilson successfully led the implementation of the city’s first bus rapid transit, which included the purchase of BRT vehicles and the transit center lease. The successful implementation of the Uptown METRORapid Silver Line further bolstered the METRONext Moving Forward Plan, an infrastructural plan to propel the Greater Houston area into timely, fast-moving commuter buses and an expanded light rail throughout METRO’s 1,200-square-mile service area within the next 20 years. Due to Wilson’s management of this project, METRO has been able to reduce commute times to and from the suburbs and alleviate transit-heavy areas. Wilson continually assists public safety, engineering and capital projects personnel in the review and drafting of major authority policies and guidelines, demonstrating his commitment to achieving universal accessibility, a major component of the METRONext referendum. He also has assisted the Executive Vice President of Operations, Public Safety & Customer Service to prepare high-level
presentations regarding universal accessibility-- an objective that is paramount to METRO’s policymaking functions to the City of Houston. Wilson diligently performs his daily responsibilities in providing counsel on construction delivery projects, real property, and operations. More specific projects that demonstrate Wilson’s transformative impact as a quintessential government lawyer include his work on the $3.5 billion bond referendum and METRO’s new $7.5 billion transit plan for the region—METRONext-- which was overwhelmingly approved by voters; Wilson has subsequently been instrumental in implementing and seeing many of the affiliated capital projects come to fruition. Other impactful capital projects that Wilson has been involved with include being responsible for leading the legal work on the authority’s newest rail line, the
Silver Line. He also navigated unique legal issues to facilitate and document the timely implementation of an extensive universal accessibility project to upgrade 2,500 bus stops around Houston to ensure accessibility to all persons – a huge milestone for transportation equality. Moreover, Wilson has also worked on capital-raising and other finance matters to finance these initiatives and other projects to improve transportation throughout METRO’s service area. Wilson’s demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity practices within government-related business matters. KEITH R. Marcquis Davis 2024 UP & COMING
acquired her first dog, Mina, a cane corso, during this time. Mina became her baby, cared for as one would care for a human child, presenting challenges with diets, behavior, health, and medical bills. This experience prompted Davis to tap into a different type of motherly instinct for her dog Mina, leading to the development of new skill sets and services at her parent’s family-owned business. Davis seized the opportunity to implement new ideas and renovations, launching a wider net outside their community with more services and products. In 2020, amidst the pandemic, Davis transitioned from being a flight attendant to a business owner and dog whisperer, introducing a pet supply store, grooming salon, pet hotel, and a new line of natural products, including grooming supplies and dog food. Networking with various doctors enabled her to offer low-cost preventative care for the community.
M
arcquis Davis’ family business emerged out of necessity, driven by the lack of respect received at the local feed store due to their substantial ownership of livestock and animals. The decision to venture into business was made by Davis’ parents, both of whom had previously worked independently for their respective family businesses: an auto parts and hardware store, and a tire shop, making Davis a third-generation entrepreneur. During a family vacation in 2002, Davis’ parents presented the plan for this new business venture to her and her two siblings. Although initially unwelcomed news

during a vacation, the family opened their business in December of the same year and has thrived for 22 years. Overcoming challenges as a Black-owned business, the family has evolved beyond a traditional feed store due to national economic shifts and changes in family dynamics over the past few decades. In the last five years, significant changes within the family led to a shift in management, resulting in the expansion and growth of the business. In Davis’ personal life, the challenges included the loss of her son as a stillborn and a divorce during the 2019-2020 pandemic, prompting her need for a fresh start and a challenge to keep herself sane. Davis
Davis is diligently working to provide affordable pet care for everyone, bridging the gap between over-the-counter products and vet services with education for clients and the community. The family’s motto, “We have the feed to fit your need,” created 21 years ago by her parents, aligns with Davis’ new line of products and services, showcasing manifestation at its finest. Despite the blur of the last five years, Davis has found a niche and an ikigai that brings out the best parts of herself. Mina has shown her the pet world in a new way, and her son serves as an angel in the sky watching over her. Davis looks forward to the next five years and the opportunities that come with being an entrepreneur in this business.
