University:

Preparing Leaders for a Global Workforce

T

exas Southern University has a history as rich as its students. Located in the heart of Houston – minutes from downtown, the Museum District and the Texas Medical Center – Texas Southern University is changing the face of Houston’s workforce by providing a number of unique degree programs for Houston and the region, which include online degree programs that allow working professionals to advance their careers. Home to nearly 10,000 students and more than 80 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs, the university is staying true to its mission of providing academic and research programs that address critical urban issues while focusing on preparing its students for the jobs of the future. Texas Southern University is proud of its heritage and excited to serve an increasingly diverse student population, preparing the next generation of leaders. The following is a partial list of accomplishments, accolades and events garnered by the university and its alumni during the 2013-2014 academic year:

Rudley Appointed to National Advisory Board Texas Southern University President Dr. John M. Rudley was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to serve on the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Capital Financing Advisory Board (HBCUFAB). The board provides advice and counsel to the Secretary of Education and the designated bonding authority as to the most effective and efficient means of implementing construction financing on historically black college and university campuses, and advises Congress regarding the progress made in implementing the program. Dr. Rudley’s term continues through September 2015.

Texas Southern University Invests in America’s STEM Future $31 Million Spearman Technology Building Opens With the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Leonard H.O. Spearman Technology Building, Texas Southern University’s Board of Regents,

administrators and faculty officially launched a $31 million investment in the University’s current and future STEM students. The 107,791-square-foot gem features the latest in technology for instruction and research, and will help to offset the inadequacy of STEM education for African American and Hispanic students, which currently has a negative impact on U.S. economic power. Named after TSU’s fifth president, the Spearman Technology Building houses 35 state-of-the-art labs, such as a full motion flight simulator lab, a vehicle emission testing lab, an air traffic control lab, a high performance computing lab, a construction lab, a Mini-TranStar lab, a driving simulation lab, two design labs, health and nuclear physics labs, a geotechnical/material testing lab, an environmental engineering lab, a wireless sensor networks lab, and various other engineering, physics and computer science labs. The departments of Aviation Science and Technology, Computer Science, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Physics and Transportation Studies will be housed in the building. “Technology is going to be a great part of creating jobs for TSU graduates,” said Dr. John Rudley, president of Texas Southern University. “This building, which is a great part of the legacy and vision of President Spearman, will not only be a place for students to train and study for the jobs of the future, but will provide them with the resources to participate in the research that our Provost [Dr. Sunny Ohia] is pushing for.” In addition to the labs, the facility is home to a new Tier 1 University Transportation Center, the Center for Transportation Training and Research and the new National Science Foundation Center for Research on Complex Networks. Together with the Science Building, the Spearman Building forms a complex that brings all of the departments in the College of Science and Technology into one area of campus to better foster interdisciplinary research and learning. “I am so pleased to see this step in our college’s evolution,” said Lei Yu, dean of the College of Science and Technology. “As we build more interdisciplinary programs that focus on incorporating technology and research into potential careers for students, the facilities in this building will be critical to our success.” State Senator Rodney Ellis; U.S. Congressman Al Green; former technology dean and founder of the aviation science program, Naomi Lede; TSU Board of Regents; surviving family of Leonard H.O. Spearman; and other supporters of the College of Science and Technology were on hand and spoke at the dedication ceremony.

Jesse H. Jones School of Business Featured in The Princeton Review’s “BEST 295 BUSINESS SCHOOLS: 2014 EDITION” TSU’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business is one of the nation’s most outstanding business schools, according to education services company, The Princeton Review. The company featured the JHJ School in the new 2014 edition of its book, “The Best 295 Business Schools.” “We are extremely proud of this recognition from the Princeton Review and of the progress our faculty and staff are making in our education and learning collaborative that prepares students to lead in a global economy,” stated Ronald A. Johnson, dean of the JHJ School. “Our goal is to develop independent thinkers who are prepared to make a positive, meaningful and lasting difference in our community and beyond.” “The Best 295 Business Schools: 2014 Edition” has two-page profiles of the schools with write-ups on their academics, student life and admissions. In the profile on the JHJ School, the Princeton Review editors describe the school as, “a school with solid preparation in Finance, General Management, Operations, and Entrepreneurial studies. The students attending the JHJ School who were surveyed by The Princeton Review shared a common sentiment and chose to attend TSU because of the school’s visionary and awesome professors. Of these luminaries, students say, “They are highly competitive and knowledgeable about their professions,” and students appreciate the “quality of their experience and expertise.” Also, as one student points out, the professors show a distinct “ability to steer students’ creativity and innovation.” Robert Franek, Princeton Review Senior VP-Publisher, recommended the JHJ School as one of the best schools a student could attend to earn a business school degree based on the school’s high regard for academic programs and the reviews of institutional data that was collected. The Princeton Review’s survey asked business school students about their school’s academics, student body and campus life as well as about themselves and their career plans. The Princeton Review analyzed and tallied its lists based on a survey of 20,300 students attending the 295 business schools at what we consider the best AACSB-accredited business schools in the U.S. as well as several AACSB-accredited business schools abroad.

Michael Strahan Makes Texas Southern Proud Makes Pro Football Hall of Fame and Donates $100k to “Ocean of Soul” Marching Band Texas Southern Alumnus Michael Strahan has again made his school proud! Strahan is one of seven NFL legends who will be formally enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during a memorable ceremony in Canton, Ohio on August 2, 2014. The former NFL player and Super Bowl champion has put Texas Southern University in the national spotlight as host of the NFL pregame show on Fox, co-host on ABC’s “LIVE with Kelly and Michael” and a member of ABC’s “Good Morning America” team. Now he is back on the biggest stage in professional football boastfully waving his maroon and gray. After starring at Westbury High School, Texas Southern University was the only school that offered Strahan a scholarship to play football. Focus, determination and hard work propelled him to be drafted in 1993 by the New York Giants. He would spend the next 15 years carving out a hall of fame worthy career that included a Super Bowl championship, a Defensive Player of the Year award, seven Pro Bowls, and breaking the NFL single-season sacks record with 22.5 sacks. “We are extremely proud of Strahan’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” said Dr. John Rudley, Texas Southern University president. “This honor is just further proof that ‘Excellence in Achievement’ is more than a mantra at Texas Southern; it is a way of life.” Strahan remains intimately connected to his alma mater. He was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree during the University’s spring 2013 commencement. He urged students to push themselves, believe in themselves, make the right decisions and to expect to be successful.

“I had one scholarship offer and that was to TSU,” Strahan said during his speech. “Thank God for that scholarship. I was not the biggest, fastest, strongest or smartest football player, but I always understood that I had more heart than that guy lined up across from me. I had heart; you have heart; we have heart at this school.” Strahan again demonstrated his love for Texas Southern when he donated $100,000 to assist the TSU “Ocean of Soul” marching band in their “Road to Canton” fundraising campaign. The “Ocean” was invited to participate in the prestigious Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Celebration for Strahan and they started a 30-day fundraising effort to offset the cost of the trip.

Strahan announced his gift on his nationally syndicated morning talk show “LIVE with Kelly and Michael.” The week prior on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, actor comedian Kevin Hart donated $50,000 to the Texas Southern University’s “Ocean of Soul” Road to Canton Band Initiative. Combined, the Strahan and Hart donations put the band over-the-top in its 30-day campaign to raise funds. The “Ocean of Soul” band will make three appearances: they will participate in the TimkenSteel Grand Parade that draws a quarter of a million spectators, perform at the Fan Appreciation Tailgate Party and play at the unveiling of the NFL Statue as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremonies. Then band students will attend the enshrinement ceremonies to see their famous alum on one of the biggest stages in football.

The Nation & MSNBC Focused on “Growing Hope” from Texas Southern University MSNBC brought its “Growing Hope” tour to Texas Southern University on April 25. Students, staff, faculty, administrators and community members joined to share their hope for America on topics including Education, Environment and Health, Equality, Community and the Economy. “NOW with Alex Wagner” was broadcast live from the University. “Growing Hope” is a MSNBC initiative that invites viewers to engage with the brand and share their hopes for change concerning issues that impact their communities. The “Growing Hope” series included live events, online activations and special on-air programming. By sharing hopes online, at events, and through social media, the MSNBC audience can grow together as a community with the power to make a difference. The MSNBC space was one of the most popular at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans last year, TSU Associate Vice President Eva Pickens recalls. “People from all walks of life were tweeting their hope for America, then running to take pictures as their statements showed up across the reflection pond. It was very interactive and exciting to see. Of course, we expect hundreds of thousands to show up at Texas Southern as well. We are definitely inviting everyone and planning for a huge audience.”

Agreement Strengthens Partnership between San Jacinto College and TSU San Jacinto College Board of Trustees approved an articulation agreement plan with Texas Southern University designed to create seamless transitions for San Jacinto College students and graduates seeking baccalaureate, masters and other advanced degrees. San Jacinto College students have transferred to TSU through the years, but establishment of an articulation agreement between the two institutions is a positive step that will benefit students, according to Dr. Catherine O’Brien, San Jacinto College associate vice chancellor for learning. “An articulation agreement is more specific than a transfer plan,” O’Brien explained. “Articulation agreements are also transfer plans, but they are more formal and may identify specific admission conditions to be accepted into a program or degree plan at TSU and may describe articulation of credit not guaranteed by transfer plans or state regulations.” O’Brien said the articulation agreement should strengthen a partnership with a neighboring university that offers students a convenient location. “With our changing demographics, we are finding that students prefer to stay closer to home and family to go to school, which is why online colleges are so popular,” O’Brien commented. “TSU is close by, and certainly provides students the option of staying close to home and obtaining a quality education. Also, TSU has developed new and unique degree programs in recent years: Aviation Science and Management, and Maritime Transportation Management, Sports Management, and Urban Planning and Environmental Policy, to name a few. These programs mesh beautifully with programs that we also have. TSU is also well known for their established programs, such as communications, pharmacy school and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law.” TSU president Dr. John Rudley agrees with Dr. O’Brien that the articulation agreement will strengthen the partnership between the two colleges. “I believe San Jacinto College students will find TSU is a good fit and a natural next step as they pursue their educational and career goals,” Rudley commented. “Like San Jacinto College, TSU strives to offer smaller class sizes, which makes for a positive learning environment for students and professors. TSU is home to more than 80 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree

We are proud of our heritage and excited to serve an increasingly diverse student population.” The articulation agreement will provide cost savings and other significant advantages. The TSU application and admission fee will be waived for San Jacinto College students transferring under the agreement. Under the articulation agreement, San Jacinto College students earning an associate of arts and associate of science, or an associate of arts in teaching with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or greater will be guaranteed admission to TSU. A maximum of 66 semester credit hours earned at San Jacinto College with a grade of C or better will be accepted and applied to designated TSU degree plans. Also under the agreement, San Jacinto College students earning an associate of applied science degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater will be guaranteed admission to TSU. A maximum of 89 semester credit hours earned at San Jacinto College with a grade of C or better will be credited toward designated applied bachelor’s degree plans at TSU.

Texas Southern Researcher Sends Experiment into Space When NASA launched Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on March 16, a Texas Southern scientific experiment was on board. Dr. Alamelu Sundaresan, TSU’s principal investigator and associate professor of biology, was one of five professors from Tier 2/Tier 3 universities selected to participate in an International Space Station (ISS) program collaborative mission to advance groundbased university/student cancer research to flightbased research aboard the ISS. Sundaresan’s research entitled: “The Investigation of Countermeasures to Modulate and Augment the Immune System” was focused on the development of ligands designed for immune system augmentation, the restoration of immune cell function and the inhibition of cancer initiation and development. This work is contributory toward the development of novel solutions to immune system and radiation risks that have plagued the Agency and its astronauts for years and includes the study of the effects of radiation and microgravity in these phenomena since they are the most significant impediments to humans on long-term exploration missions. The initial findings on the efficacy of these compounds, which reveal inhibitive properties for cancer cell proliferation and restorative properties for cells exposed to radiation, are most encouraging.

Her research was initially funded through the NASA Minority University Research and Education Program (MUREP) as part of the NASA Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) 2008-2012 grant.

Thurgood Marshall School of Law Admitted into AALS TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law (TMSL) was granted membership into the American Association of Law Schools (AALS). The association’s Executive Committee and House of Representatives approved TMSL’s membership at the AALS annual meeting in New York January 3, 2014. The room was filled with cheer from other member school representatives and more than 15 TMSL faculty and staff after the vote was accepted and Dean Holley delivered a riveting acceptance speech. TMSL hosted a “Texas in New York” reception immediately following the meeting at the Sheraton, New York. TMSL endured a very arduous review which ultimately resulted in the Executive Committee’s recognition of our “historic mission of preparing a diverse group of students for leadership roles in the legal community, business, and government.” The Executive Committee further stated “TMSL consistently rates as one of the most, if not the most, diverse law schools in the nation.” The Executive Committee recognized the significant increase in bar passage rate as a result of our advanced academic support program and assessment department. They also commented on the increased “quality and quantity of our faculty scholarship.” The purpose of the AALS is “the improvement of the legal profession through legal education.” This goal is accomplished in a number of ways, including professional development programs for law professors and administrators, a complement of over 90 sections organized by faculty and senior administrators and a membership process that is designed to further the core values of the Association. The Association and university share the core values of the simultaneous pursuit of Excellence and Equality. Membership means that TMSL faculty can play an even more prominent national role in the academy, and that our students will become eligible for the Order of The Coif. The TMSL family is extremely proud of this prestigious accomplishment and further shares the congratulatory expressions we received from other colleagues in the legal academy below. To all of our alumni, students, faculty and staff, this is yet another reason for you to be proud of TSU!

Texas Southern Among the Minor ity University Teams NASA Selected for the 2014 Microgravity Research Flights Texas Southern University was one of 13 undergraduate teams NASA selected from minority-serving institutions across the United States to test their science experiments in microgravity conditions. The teams traveled on a Reduced Gravity Education Flight (RGEF) with NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) the week of July 7. Each team designs, flies and evaluates a reduced-gravity experiment that aims to fill technology needs and knowledge gaps previously identified by NASA. They tested their experiments aboard a specially modified aircraft able to simulate a reduced-gravity environment. The aircraft flies approximately 30 sets of rollercoaster-like climbs and dives, producing periods of near weightlessness and hypergravity ranging from 0 to 2 Gs. “We are excited that our program provides a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring scientists and engineers to study and understand their craft. By participating in this innovative program, the students gain useful skills through collaborative planning and teamwork,” said Frank Prochaska, RGEF program manager at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. MUREP is committed to the recruitment of underrepresented and underserved students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to sustain a diverse workforce. Participation in NASA projects and research stimulates students to continue their studies at all levels of higher education and earn advanced degrees in these critical fields.

TSU prepares a diverse student population for future careers. Texas Southern University’s Sawyer Auditorium February 28 and March 1. The show, which drew one of the largest crowds to date in TSU’s newly renovated Sawyer Auditorium, was a gospel-fused celebration of song and imparted wisdom as women come together to save one of Brooklyn’s troubled youth. Crowns was directed and choreographed by Ms. Jade Lambert-Smith of PG Entertainment in Atlanta, Ga. The play introduced the church community to the acting side of Kathy Taylor, who ended the play with a rendering of “Oh How Precious” that brought the audience to its feet. She professed the “Hat Queen” rules which no one in attendance will soon forget, “Never, never let anybody touch your hat. A hat is to be admired from afar.” Crowns is based on the book of the same name by photographer Michael Cunningham and the oral history of Craig Marberry. It was brought to the campus of Texas Southern University by TSU’s HATS & TIES Committee. The acronym HATS & TIES stands for, Honoring Academically Talented Scholars…to Impact and Engage Students, a mentoring program that raises money for student scholarships, helps with a graduation completion scholarship and other support programs and services. Eva Pickens, TSU’s Associate Vice President for University Advancement (Communications, Marketing, Media Relations and Community Outreach) leads the HATS & TIES initiative. She states, “From all indications, we made the right decision in showcasing this play at the university for Black History Month. The show was delightfully entertaining for the entire fam-

ily. It made people smile, cry, laugh, stomp their feet and clap their hands. It made people think about our history, and our proud past which should never be forgotten. I want to thank Regina Taylor, the writer/author, for encouraging us to remember.” Proceeds from the play helped award scholarships to first-generation college students and students impacted by the cuts to federal grants (Pell Grants) and loans (Parent Plus Loans) and who are nearing the completion of their degrees. “We are pleased to see so many from the Houston community come out this evening to support this event and student scholarships,” remarked TSU’s First Lady Mrs. Docia Rudley, at the conclusion of opening night. “This event was simply wonderful.”

Dr. Merline Pitre Awarded TSU’s Presidential Achievement Medal On April 22, the Office of Associate Provost along with the Faculty Excellence Awards Committee, held the 2014 Faculty Excellence Awards Luncheon in the University Museum. The annual awards program is designed to highlight TSU faculty members’ achievements and accomplishments in the various educational areas on campus during each academic school year. Dr. Merline Pitre, professor in the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences, was given the Presidential Achievement Medal for her years of exceptional work in all areas of teaching, research, and service to the university and the community at large. commitment to scholarship is clearly represented in her numerous scholarly articles and books.” A colleague noted that “Dr. Pitre is an academically conscientious and stellar scholar and teacher who has inspired numerous students who have gone on to become history professors across the country.”

Five U.S Congressional Members Speak on Human Trafficking at Texas Southern University U.S. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) held a field hearing entitled “Combating Human Trafficking in Our Major Cities,” at Texas Southern University School of Public Affairs on Thursday, March 20. Houston is a large international city with the second busiest port in the nation, and is host to many high profile events including the Super Bowl in 2017. The city’s commerce and proximity to the Southwest Border make it a magnet for domestic and international human trafficking. This hearing focused on Houston as a case study for Congress to further understand trafficking in major U.S. cities. Witnesses will include trafficking survivors and local, state and federal law enforcement. “Human trafficking is a growing epidemic around the world,” McCaul said. “In the United States, more than 14,000 people – men, women and children – are trafficked each year. While its close proximity to major highways, ports-of-entry and the Mexican border make Houston a model city for commerce, human traffickers are taking advantage of these means to exploit domestic and international victims. The Department of Homeland Security and its components are working together to combat human trafficking every day. However, we must do more to root out and stop this horrific crime. “The purpose of this hearing was to raise awareness and find ways to bring an end to human trafficking across the country, beginning by examining the movement across our Southern border. I am grateful for the survivors who have bravely agreed to join us to shed critical light on this issue, and I look forward to hearing from federal, state and local witnesses on their experiences in combating human trafficking and ways we can improve our efforts.” Members of Congress present were: Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Katy), Chairman Rep. Ted Poe (R-Houston) Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Corpus Christi) Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) Rep. Gene Green (D-Houston) Facts About Human Trafficking: •  Human trafficking is not human smuggling. Trafficking victims are sold into prostitution and forced labor. •  An estimated 100,000 U.S. children become victims of sex trafficking annually (Source: Government Accountability Office). •  An estimated 1 out of 3 children is lured into trafficking with 48 hours of leaving home (Source: Children at Risk). •  The average age of entry into sex trafficking is 12-13 years old (Source: Children at Risk).

Texas Southern University’s UNIQUE DEGREE PROGRAMS AVIATION SCIENCE Since 1986, the aviation science management program in the College of Science and Technology has been giving students wings. Many of the students in this Bachelor of Science program have been dreaming about flight since they were children. The FAA has recently approved a new flight-training track in the program. But air travel is not just about flying

The aviation industry includes commercial airports and federal regulations and requires a deep understanding of how to manage complex systems. In a curriculum that puts students in airport simulations as well as in the classroom, the program trains students to be air traffic controllers and airport managers who make decisions on a day-to-day basis that help keep flights going in our world’s airports.

and operations/management education to provide students with the best knowledge about port operations. The program is the result of a $2 million grant from the Port of Houston Authority that continues to be a partner in offering internships for students and jobs for graduates.

MARITIME TRANSPORTATION While some students have their eyes on the skies, others are focused on the sea through the Bachelor of Science program in maritime transportation, logistics and management in the College of Science and Technology. The Earth’s surface is 70 percent covered by water, and much of the goods that are imported from other countries travel by sea and land at our nation’s ports. Ship channel-related businesses are responsible for more than $178.5 billion in statewide economic impact, and with older generations retiring, the industry is expected to grow 16 percent in the next three years. The maritime program taps into this demand by merging engineering, finance

URBAN PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY Students who want to take their careers in city planning to the next level can enroll in the master’s degree program in urban planning and environmental policy in the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs. It is the city’s only accredited program and was recently granted the longest accreditation term of seven years. Students at the master’s and doctoral level work together in courses and on group projects and are active in a couple of organizations: Student Planning Organization and Council of Planning Advisors. The Ph.D. program is exclusive: only 10 out of more than 50 students are admitted each year.

ENTERTAINMENT AND RECORDING MANAGEMENT Tucked away in the School of Communication is a small program with huge potential. If you’ve ever listened to a song on the radio, Pandora, Spotify or iTunes, you know that the recording industry is always churning out new material. The Entertainment and Recording Management program at Texas Southern trains the people behind the microphone who make those tracks possible. This bachelor’s level program hones in on students’ interest in becoming musical stars, and shows that there is so much more to the industry than just the performers. Courses are designed to give students hands-on experience with the finances, contracts and general management associated with the recording industry. Often paired with classes in the radio, television and film major, students also learn about the technical side of the business in how to record and produce songs.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT A new program in the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs addresses the need for professionals trained in managing emergency situations after natural and manmade disasters. The bachelor’s degree in emergency management and homeland security is the first of its kind at an HBCU. With the devastation of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike, as well as plant explosions and other manmade catastrophes that have affected the Houston region, the key to ensuring our community is as prepared as possible is the development of a cadre of specialists who are trained to deal with both the onset and aftermath of these types of disasters. According to the United States Department of Labor, between 2010 and 2020, government jobs are expected to grow by 7 percent and jobs in the protective services industry are expected to grow by 11 percent, making this degree both relevant and timely to potential students.

SPORT MANAGEMENT With an industry burgeoning on the second-most productive in the nation, it makes sense to have an educational program that taps into it to provide an avenue for students to succeed after graduation. Motivational Moment w/ JWExpanding Your Education

A

By Jarrod Wilkins Contributing Writer

nyone who has achieved great results in any field will tell you that one of the most important things to remember is to always be a student. We are now living in a world where wearing the title of attorney, engineer, father, mother, basketball player and politician is no longer enough to get you to the top, let alone keep you there. You must now become a student attorney, student engineer, student father, etc. in order to deal effectively with the increasing changes within today’s society.

I am often reminded of a quote by Eric Hoffer that says, “In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth, while the learned shall find themselves perfectly suited for a world that no longer exists.” The reality that my wife and I have observed conducting and attending thousands of seminars, lectures, conference calls, leadership events and even in the case of some personal coaching clients, is that the majority of people stop becoming students after they graduate high school or college. They never even bother to pick up a book, audio series, attend seminars or stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones; however, when you observe those individuals that continue to succeed and stay on the cutting edge, you quickly discover that championships aren’t won during the game; they are won on the training field. I always teach a principle that a mentor of mine passed on to me: “Before you decide on what you are going to do,

you must first commit to who you will become.” Being persistent may get you there, but staying consistent will keep you there. It is imperative, regardless of how accomplished and awarded you are, that you keep growing, learning and meeting new people. That’s how we stay on top of our game. I don’t subscribe to the old saying of “you have to be at the right place at the right time.” My philosophy is “you must be at all the right places at all times” because you never know who you are going to meet, what you are going to learn or how one introduction or a series of conversations may spark an idea that

will allow you to grow to the next level. Education and higher learning should not stop after high school and college – that’s just the beginning. Life can be a cruel teacher, it oftentimes gives the test first and the lesson afterwards. These are the things that traditional education alone can’t prepare you for. It is important for every person who desires success to invest the time and resources necessary, developing themselves personally and professionally to earn the toughest degree available, a PhD in Life. In the words of Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, “where you will be five years from now will be largely based upon the books you read, the CDs you listen to and the seminars you attend.” Nothing is ever stagnant; it is either growing or dying. My hope is that you continue to grow, and if you’re reading this article, congratulations – you’re well on your way.

The Popcorn Bar Keeps Customers and the Community Happy By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

f there’s one thing that unites people in the community, it’s good food – snacks included. Husband and wife Lorenzo and Kisha Armstead love popcorn. Whenever the couple traveled or were on vacation, if they saw a popcorn shop, they stopped. It was their thing. “We love popcorn so we started researching,” Kisha said. “We found that there weren’t many popcorn shops in Houston. It seemed like a pretty good business venture for us and after consulting with a guy out of Dallas who owned his own business, we decided to go for it.” Lorenzo and Kisha Armstead have owned The Popcorn Bar for two years. The gourmet popcorn shop offers customers a wide variety of popcorn flavors, ranging from the basics—butter, kettle and caramel to specialty flavors—banana pudding popcorn and buffalo wing popcorn. Customer favorites include the chocolates. “The weirder sounding popcorn flavors are the most popular ones,” Kisha said. “For example, our pickled cowboy is a mix of ranch and dill and it is good! Trust me, everything tastes exactly how it sounds. Dill pickle tastes like a dill pickle.” The Popcorn Bar also sells tins of popcorns, gift baskets and candies by the pound. “We have a large clientele that is extremely diverse. The common denominator is the popcorn,” said Kisha. “It doesn’t

matter the socioeconomic status; everybody loves popcorn.” Being the owners of a small business, the Armsteads know firsthand the importance of supporting other small businesses. “I think it’s extremely important that small businesses support each other because the chains and larger companies have the funds and marketing behind them to allow things to go smoother, but small businesses don’t have that luxury,”

she said. “It really comes back to the community and other small businesses to support and help each other.” The Popcorn Bar not only supports other small businesses, but they support their community. “We do a great deal in the community – mainly donations for various causes, schools, summer events, etc. We donate and give whenever and wherever it is needed,” Kisha said. “We donate in several communities, not just the community

we’re in. That’s a big deal to us.” The Popcorn Bar is preparing to host a large community fundraiser. Lorenzo and Kisha are both former educators and know all too well the cost for teachers who purchase school supplies. “We wanted to do a back-to-school drive, with the goal being to get school supplies,” Kisha said. “We want the community to donate school supplies because with [me and my husband] both being former educators, we know for sure that teachers spend a lot of money on supplies.” The Popcorn Bar’s School Supply Drive will be from Aug. 1-9, 2014. Individuals who bring in school supplies to donate will receive a free mini bag of savory popcorn.* And keeping in fashion of keeping their customers happy and satisfied, The Popcorn Bar will be rolling out four new flavors, just in time for the back-to-school drive: lime, hot fries, chocolate drizzle and key lime pie! Design Expert Linda Lindsay Helps Clients Transform their Office Spaces “Presentation is everything. Your branding begins as soon as a client walks through your door. Everything you stand for is dictated by your environment – a good-looking environment allows for an emotional connection, which transforms into success…”

–Linda Lindsay

By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

L

inda Lindsay has a background in design so extensive that any interior designer would be impressed. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UCLA and completed design training at New York School of Interior Design. She’s interned with a design firm in Los Angeles, worked in her native city with New York builders and worked for industry powerhouses such as Herman Miller and Ethan Allen. Lindsay’s worked in numerous capacities – from sales manager to design consultant. She’s also worked as an independent designer. The experience she gained proved invaluable – and she was able to branch out and start her own business. “After working at Ethan Allen managing their showroom, I did notice that there was a missing link in the world of furnishings, and that was the audience that I was working for,” Lindsay said. “That’s when I decided to open my own design studio in Harlem in 1993 – which led to opening a second location in Brooklyn in 2009.” Lindsay’s goal was to educate through Showhomes the benefits of purchasing furniture, not only for the look, but also

making smart financial decisions when purchasing furniture. “My work with Herman Miller allowed me to not only see furniture as a product as a designer; it allowed me to appreciate and understand all that goes into the design of furnishings,” she said. “Herman Miller allowed me to be able to work within a contract furnishing market, yet also use residential furnishings in the same space…what a fine mix!” Lindsay’s passion for furniture and design led her on a quest to design her own line of furnishings, such as the Brooklyn Bench. She sold her first product to the legendary Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. “If you look at the film Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee, you will see her sitting on the bench in her home,” Lindsay said. “That was truly one of my greatest accomplishments to be honored by such a true artist icon.” Throughout the years, Lindsay’s work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Chicago Tribune and Essence Magazine. Having experienced great success on the East Coast and beyond, Lindsay de-

cided to venture down to the South. After much of her immediate family moved to Houston, Lindsay also decided to make Houston her home. And she brought her passion for design with her. Lindsay partnered with Lindsey’s Office Furniture, a leading office furniture source which offers new, used and refurbished premium office furniture. She serves as account manager/designer. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing city and market. It’s truly exciting and rewarding,” she said. “We exclusively design for our clients’ style and budget. I have a professional team that has direct relationships with all of their manufacturers and who directly import from all over the globe to bring customers high quality and high value based products.” Lindsey’s Office Furniture has three facilities: a 40,000-square-foot showroom that houses new office furniture and refurbished cubicles, a 45,000-square-foot showroom that houses all pre-owned office furniture and a 25,000-square-foot facility with additional pre-owned office furniture.

“My role and goal for the company is to inspire new and old business owners to make sure that their space is a projection of their brand,” Lindsay said. “I focus on helping people in organizations use their square footage to their best interest, assist with corporate identity, create a positive and motivating working environment and make sure the physical environment is supporting their brand. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Only by understanding how their company works can we design their environment, which will support a unique model of innovation.” Lindsay believes in transformation through new concepts and ideas – which can improve morale, reduce real estate costs, create awareness and gain positive public relations. For example, Lindsey’s Office Furniture offers recycled products for smaller companies and budget-conscious clients. “When clients walk into your space – whether a home office or larger facility – my goal is the same,” she said. “I do not decorate, I design.” Lindsey’s Office Furniture was founded in 1987 and employs more than 40. Clients work one-on-one with sales professionals to transform their office spaces. “Life imitates art. Corporate life should imitate the making of life,” Lindsay said. “I am always looking to specify and collaborate with designers, architects and homeowners to create an inspiring, efficient and functional workspace for clients and their employees. This is my passion. I want your work space to inspire and impress your client and make employees feel more productive in a space they love.”

The Top 10 Ways to Maximize Your Experience During a Small Business Training Event approach, often times you see a way to apply the new information in your small business.

3

H

Be fully engaged It is a proven fact that for the majority of people, learning occurs from active involvement. This is especially true for small business leaders attending training events. Some ways to be fully engaged are to respond to the Instructor’s questions, mention different viewpoints and participate in team exercises that are designed to boost your understanding. Also, playing full-out allows the subject matter to crystallize in your mind, and in turn, enables you to quickly apply what you have learned in your small business.

By Helen Callier Contributing Writer

ave you ever attended a small business workshop and noticed people just sitting passively like a spectator? And even worse, after spending hours and sometimes days away from their office, this same small business person then leaves the training event without getting what they paid for. Gone are the days when a small business leader could throw dollars out the window and not gain maximum return on their training investment. This past January, I was selected to be a scholar in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program. At this time, I decided to step up my game and raise my level of participation during this training program in order to create the optimal learning experience for myself. And with this mind shift, I would be able to develop a growth plan to propel my small business to the next stage. For those small business leaders that plan on attending training conferences or workshops or becoming a scholar of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program this year, I suggest the following Top 10 ways to maximize your experience during a training event.

4 when you keep your eyes, ears and mind open to receiving and subsequently, exploring newfound ideas from other scholars.

2

1

Be open to new ideas and perspectives Being open to new ideas and different perspectives is the ideal way to learn and grow as a person and in your small business. Creative ideas that spark a new product innovation or provide a glimpse into a new market can come from anywhere and anytime while you are in a training event. These added bonuses are only possible

Punt the words “can’t,” “won’t” and “no” in the rear Negative energy is draining. It also undermines your objective of gaining new insights and information to help your small business grow. “No,” “can’t,” “won’t,” etc. are contagious and when one scholar says, “No, that won’t work or that doesn’t make sense or we can’t do that in our business,” then automatically like a moving river, other scholars begin to hop onboard the negative train. Say, “Yes!” and think about new angles and possibilities that can be applied in your small business. When you use this

Listen Treat the material you are receiving as though you are hearing and reading it for the first time. When you do so, where you were once blind in your small business, you will see an unfolding of the reality and can view your business from a different perspective. Listen and you will be moved at what you discover.

5

Help other scholars Assisting other small business leaders to learn helps you increase your knowledge; and this places you in a warm light where the world will return good to you and your small business. “If you help enough people get want they want out of life then, you can get want you want.” – Zig Ziglar Make sure to pick up your copy of next month’s d-mars.com Business Journal or visit online at www.d-mars.com to read the remaining five ways to maximize your experience and return on your investment in developing your small business through training events and workshops.

Educate or Vegetate

T

By Kachelle Kelly Contributing Writer

here is a new rave about the awesome power of the green leafy vegetable “kale.” It is high in iron and Vitamin K, can protect against various cancers, is filled with potent antioxidants, is an exceptional antinflammatory food and is excellent for cardiovascular support. Kale is the new “super food.” Even with all of this popu-

larity as a vegetable, you don’t ever want to envy its success, because when people “vegetate,” it’s not a pretty sight. When a human being vegetated, they “live or spend a period of time in a dull, inactive, unchallenging way.” This is totally against the success philosophy of living your best life NOW! How do you keep your life from suffering from this debilitating disease? You continue to educate your mind, body and spirit. Yes, continuing education is the key to living a fruitful and prosperous life. It keeps your brain cells active and puts you on top of things, instead of things being on top of you. You feel young and invigorated because you are learning new things and hanging out with others who are often younger than you, but who are pursuing similar goals. How can you afford the rising cost of education? Use the KISS principle by

“Keeping It Simple (with) Studentship.” Try reading self-help books, coaching, self-study and staying abreast of what’s new and improved in your occupation. Being “All You Can Be” is more than a recruitment slogan. It’s a goal that successful people strive for on a lifelong basis. If you find that you are about to disintegrate because of a lack of mental stimulus, try taking a continuing education course at a local college or university. Leisure Learning, a Houston staple since 1979, offers over 500 fun continuing education courses. If you are looking for books on any topic, Amazon.com is the place to go, or your local Barnes & Noble where the atmosphere is cerebrally charging and highly energizing. If you are searching for something for your spirit, try viewing my vlogs on my YouTube stations or get a copy of

Boss Men and Women Pray as a guide to rebuilding your spiritual core. Just like building your core muscles helps you tighten your abs, strengthen your back and improve your balance, building your spiritual core helps you tighten your game plan for success, strengthen your faith and improve your life/work balance. Remember, in order to accelerate, you’ve got to educate instead of vegetate. When you don’t make education a priority, your plans for success will inevitably disintegrate. So don’t be late to integrate an educational program into your immediate future. Live your best life NOW! “To Get a Good Job, Get a Good Education”

I

By J. Thomas Smith

“I have one singularly good quality. I am not ashamed to learn. I ask and inquire and I am indeed grateful to those who answer me.”

— Plato

Contributing Writer

have one singularly good quality. I am not ashamed to learn. I ask and inquire and I am indeed grateful to those who answer me." – Plato I can recall as a child, I often heard the phrase, “If you want a good job, get a good education.” There was never a question in my mind about whether I would go to college, even though no one in my family had gone to college before. However, there was uncertainty as to how it would be paid for. I have always shunned student loans. I was by no means an exceptional student. This was partly because I had worked part-time in junior high and throughout high school. So, the word scholarship seldom came my way. When I was an undergraduate student at Detroit College of Business (now Davenport University), education seemed to be intended to not just prepare one for a job, but rather to develop the individual. So, as a business major, I was required to take courses in ethics, aesthetics and philosophy, along with

accounting, management, algebra, psychology and the like. When I got into broadcasting, I had to drop out of school on several occasions, often in the middle of a semester. This was usually because of conflicts with work and several times because a new job required me to travel out of state. So, with a burning desire to obtain “a good education,” I sought out “alternative education” opportunities that I could pursue, wherever I happened to be. There came a time that I considered myself an expert in the area of alternative education, mainly because I knew something that many of my contemporaries had yet to discover, and they sought out my counsel. Most of those academic programs were tied to campus-based schools, but with an independent study option. Discovering this new world of educational opportunities made it much easier for me to work in the broadcasting field and continue my education. I always knew that there would be a time that I might have to choose a different

kind of work. So, I used the luxury of short hours, a good salary and unlimited curiosity to pursue the study of whatever interested me – whether it was religion, metaphysics, history, psychology or broadcasting. I also learned a great deal from life. Life is a great teacher, but often the curriculum is abstract. Lifelong learning recognizes that learning does not stop after childhood, nor is it limited to the lecture hall. Learning takes place throughout life and in a broad range of situations. During the last half century, there has been innovation – both technologically and scientifically. These changes have had a significant impact on how people learn and their style of learning. Even if we wanted to, we cannot restrict learning or cause it to be divided into a particular place or time, nor can we limit its application to the workplace. Instead, we learn in all venues and on an ongoing basis from our daily interactions with friends, co-workers, the web and the world around us.

Most colleges and universities in the United States encourage lifelong learning to nontraditional (older) students. Many colleges and universities offer professional licensure and certification programs for teachers, counselors and other professionals. But, the opportunities are not limited to the professionals. No matter your dream or aspirations, there can be a school in your mailbox or on your computer screen. You can pursue a course at your community college or university. You can get specialized learning in a seminar or workshop, or you can read books, watch videos or listen to mp3s or CDs. I encourage you to pursue your dreams. Pursue your career, your avocation or your business idea. If you don’t know what to do to accomplish your goal, research the idea. Get counseling or coaching, and you can learn what you need to do. Why not get started today? No excuses! There is nothing so bad as a good excuse. A good excuse will keep you on the couch. Whether you learn from your day-today experience on the job, online or in the classroom, there is no limit to what you can achieve as long as you keep your eye on the goal. I’ll see you at the top. Kerry Washington’s Advice Could Help More Women Use Crowdfunding

K

By Cynthia Nevels Contributing Writer

erry Washington was recently awarded the 2014 Crystal Award for Excellence in Television in Los Angeles, Calif. Her work as the fearless leader of Pope and Associates on ABCs “Scandal” is now in its fourth season. During the gala, Washington shared a speech that struck a nerve of truth that resonated with many women across the nation. Women normally shy away from being open risk takers because of their fear of failing publicly. Being perceived as less than perfect can sometimes paralyze women who want to start their own business, raise capital or fulfill their passion. The effort to start a new business and to raise capital using online crowdfunding platforms is not an option because women typically believe everything has to be perfect before taking on the risk. If

it is an option, they typically will not set a goal of half a million dollars right out the shoot. Women entrepreneurs tend to shy away from asking for the true investment amount needed to launch their business. According to Dr. Richard Swart, Director of Research for the University of California, Berkeley’s Program for Innovation in Entrepreneurial and Social Finance reported 84% of men use crowdfunding as a tool for raising capital in a public setting. Women certainly use crowdfunding as a source for social finance but in far lower numbers. Women typically tend to set lower goals for their campaigns, yet are more successful at achieving the goals set. Moola-Hoop.com co-founder Brenda Bazan launched her crowdfunding platform and designed it with women entrepreneurs in mind. Her goal is to help thousands of women realize their dreams by providing a path to fund their business and creative ideas. “Women tend to undersell and over perform, which is appropriate for crowdfunding,” Bazan shared in an interview on Disrupt Radio. The data shows start-

ups and new ventures that successfully raise capital via crowdfunding typically will find it easier to raise or have access to additional capital from angel investors, venture capitalists and other traditional mechanisms of financing. Investors are typically looking for the dramatic vision and the rich story of how the idea will grow. But, women fail to tell their stories or talk about themselves in front of investors due to the fear of making a mistake. Washington dispelled the notion of women feeling they have to be perfect. In her speech, Washington stated, “We as women put ourselves in this situation of feeling like we can’t take a risk, like in order to step out there we have to be perfect, because we’re scared that if we don’t say the right thing, or do the right thing,

that we’ll reflect poorly on ourselves and our community, whether that community be women, people of color, both.” Helping women recognize the true opportunity that exists in the market today will be vitally important to further development of women-owned microenterprises. Creating an ecosystem that welcomes women issuers who have innovative ideas and disruptive companies is the responsibility of all stakeholders. Women like Kate Blanchet, the winner of the 2014 Crystal Award for Excellence in Film, should be celebrated for their words of wisdom. When analyzing the data, men continue to outnumber women when it comes to high-paying jobs and raising capital for startups. The problem, however, is not with the system per se, it is the mindset of the women. Washington went further to point out the need for change, “[Women] need to be willing to be uncomfortable, to be flawed, to be imperfect, to own our voice, to step into our light, so that we can continue to inspire other people and employ other people, and make room for more and more voices and presence.” If more women start to see successful female business owners overcome their fear of failure, take on more risks and build strong enterprises, others just may follow and the crowd will cheer them on.

he hit television sitcom The Jeffersons was broadcast on CBS from 1975-1985. Famous cast members include George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford) and Florence Johnston (Marla Gibbs). Television producer Norman Lear created the character George Jefferson specifically for Sherman Hemsley. The show garnered much success and was the longest running sitcom to feature a predominantly African American cast. During the time on air,

Cliff and April have been married for only two years. It’s pretty evident the honeymoon phase is over because the couple finds themselves constantly arguing over petty things – whose car gets parked under the carport, where to eat for dinner and whose turn it is to wash the dishes. While the arguments are small, it begins to take a toll and April confides to her close friend that she may have made the wrong decision by marrying Cliff. April’s friend reminded her why she married Cliff in the first place and pointed out how petty the arguments between her and her husband were. It really resonated with April when she heard someone else pointing it out to her. April told her friend, “I guess you’re right. Cliff and I were so caught up with petty arguments that we couldn’t see the forest for the trees.”

“Living to Leave…A Legacy”

T

By Noel Pinnock Contributing Writer

he world as we know it today is not the same world it was yesterday, yester-week, yestermonth, or yester-year. It is constantly changing, not only because it is rotating on its axis but also because it is adjusting in an everchanging environment, much like we do daily. Unfortunately, we do more of the former – rotating – than the latter – evolving – simply because of the monotony that is produced by routinely living life. As a lifelong learner, we just can’t rotate in life, we have to evolve in it and adjust to the environment in which we live. Lifelong learning may be broadly defined as learning that is pursued throughout life: learning that is flexible, diverse and available at different times and in different places. Lifelong learning crosses

sectors, promoting learning beyond traditional schooling and throughout adult life (i.e. post-compulsory education). This definition is based on Delors’ (1996) four ‘pillars’ of education for the future. •  Learning to know – mastering learning tools rather than acquisition of structured knowledge. •  Learning to do – equipping people for the type of work needed now and in the future, including innovation and adaptation of learning to future work environments. •  Learning to live together and with others – peacefully resolving conflict, discovering other people and their cultures, fostering community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience and social inclusion. •  Learning to be – education contributing to a person’s complete development: mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality. In Sweden, the National Agency for Education has put forward a conceptual framework for both lifelong learning and life-wide learning (Skolverket, 2000). Lifelong learning is seen as a holistic view of education and recognizes learning from different environments. As shown in Figure 1, it consists of two dimensions (Skolverket, 2000: 19):

1. Lifelong learning recognizing that individuals learn throughout a lifetime, and 2.  Life-wide learning recognizing the formal, non-formal and informal settings. We just can’t simply live just to live; we have to live to leave. Many people who

the torch? The intensity of the light we leave is determined by the contributions we make. The deeper the contributions, the brighter the light and the brighter the light, the better people can navigate in this ever-evolving world and find solutions to the world’s most perplexing conundrums. Learning isn’t optional, but a necessity, and it is an ongoing process that has a definite beginning, but doesn’t have an end. Abraham Lincoln said, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” This opens the premise that learning is a daily adventure that one carries and explores throughout life. Learning doesn’t stop just because school does. People who are truly effective generally did not get that way by sitting still or rotating on the axis in life. They apply themselves to constant learning and competing against themselves to grow and learn day-by-day. Making a commitment to yourself to learn something new every day, you will not only enjoy what you discover, but you will be able to apply your knowledge and become a teacher to future generations. Remember to break some rules, but always break your record. www.noelpinnock.com

The Vital Role of Education in Business By Frenetta Tate, MBA

A

Contributing Writer

re you on the cutting edge in your business? Are you teachable and learning new things that can take your business to a greater level? Do you know the latest trends and best practices in your business industry? These are great power questions to ask yourself as you grow in your business. Being informed is a great step towards maintaining a growing and profitable business. Education plays a vital role; not only in our personal lives, but also in our professional lives. It is so vital that many adults have gone back to school to get a higher education to increase their opportunities for promotion in the workplace since many jobs now require advanced degrees and evident experience. The great news is there are no degree requirements to be a business owner. One can start a business without a formal education, advanced degree or special training. While there are no prerequisites to starting a business, being able to effectively maintain it and operate at the most optimum level requires ongoing training and education. Your business sustainability hinges on the ability to be informed and educated so that you remain relevant and responsive to your clients growing and ever-changing needs. A business owner does well to include continuing business education, training and personal development as a line item in their budget. There are many conferences, events and seminars – online and offline – that one can attend which can provide tools to help grow a business and build personal skills in the process; however, it is important to choose the right one with the greatest benefit.

Here are four tips to consider when seeking educational opportunities for your business. 1.  When choosing a conference, seminar or other event for your continuing business education, determine what will provide the best return on your investment based on your needs. You wouldn’t buy cough medicine for an earache, so use your business education budget wisely.

2.  Be strategic when choosing the event for your professional and personal growth. Ensure that the theme and topics align with your business, brand or training that you believe you need. You wouldn’t go to a conference about construction tools if your business is selling makeup. 3.  Avoid groupthink when choosing which training is best for you. What may be best for others or for a group of people may not be a good use of your time. Know what you truly want to learn and what area of your life needs growth and allow that to be the driver of your decision. Education is often a decision that only you can make. You know your needs better than anyone else. Use your own best judgment. 4. Hire a coach who can help you navigate through the educational opportunities so you will not waste your money on conferences, seminars and events that will not serve you or your company well in the future. When attending educational events, give your undivided attention to learning, engage yourself in the event activities and expand your horizons by seeking out new connections in areas that will help you and your business as well as opportunities for you to contribute and serve. Networking is an excellent way to increase knowledge and skills, as well as expand your circle and learn from others. As a business owner, the application of the knowledge attained from education, networking, conferences, seminars, professional courses and training positions you for greater success.
