5 Financial Tips to Take Your Business to the Next Level

Building a business is an incredible journey - and like all journeys, every stage is different. Running a startup, for instance, is very different from running a midsize business.

As your business grows, your needs evolve too. Scaling a business often means navigating different types of risks, expanding product or service offerings, and executing more complex operations. The tools or technology solutions you had as a startup may be different to the resources you need now to help you manage a larger team, support more customers, or solve more complexities in your business.

Just one example: when it comes to thinking about finance tools or technology, there are so many different choices on the market that it can be difficult to understand which is the best one for your growing business.

If you’re ready to take your business to the next level, here are four finance-focused tips to help your growing business continue thriving.

1. BE SMART ABOUT SPEND & EXPENSE MANAGEMENT

As your business grows, you need full visibility into your evolving company budgets and how your employees are spending. Adding new employees and departments makes it harder to fully monitor organizational spending, opening your business up to the risk of overspending or fraud (whether intentional or not). Finding efficiencies in the overall spend and expense process can also deliver valuable time back to employees so they can focus on your business and customers. Automating your spending and expense management can help. Stay agile with budget management: Scaling up means more budget complexity. Adopting a spend management solution helps to keep you nimble and can allow businesses to approve and delegate budgets adeptly, ensuring control over financial health without the hassle.

Automate your expense processes: For every business owner, streamlining the approval and reimbursement process is a game-changer as you scale. Automation in expense management can significantly reduce the administrative burdens, enhancing efficiency and allowing for a smoother financial workflow. For example, BILL customer Marine Layer, a growing retail apparel brand that focuses on sustainability, saved at least three to four hours per week on expense management. “BILL gives us more up-to-date expense reporting. It’s just a real time saver and speeds up our financial close. Not having to manually code for our monthly close really saves time and makes the close more efficient,” said Kelly Ransom, Financial Accountant at Marine Layer.

2.

GET READY TO “PAY GLOBAL” EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT GLOBAL YET

As your business grows, you might also be looking at partners and vendors you’re working with to ensure they can help you scale the operations for your business needs. At this stage, many small and midsize business (SMB) owners will look to expand their vendor network, both domestically and internationally, to improve cost, quality, and business efficiency. But to do that, SMBs need safe, secure, and efficient financial platforms that can handle vendor payments, whether domestically or internationally. This is particularly important as traditional international wire transfers can be expensive and complex. Leveraging integrated financial automation software for international payments can help ensure a faster, more secure and effective process. Choose the right global payment partner: It’s important to look for a technology partner that will simplify operations, offer competitive exchange rates and provide comprehensive data management. The right financial platform can provide seamless global payments integration and robust features to process international payments quickly, securely and easily. I also always encourage businesses to look for a global payment solution that grows with your business.

Diversify payment methods: Payment preferences vary depending on what part of the world your sales or services are coming from. It’s helpful to offer a variety of payment options to your vendors, such as credit or debit card payments, contactless payments, and digital wallets. The right technology partner can allow you to offer multiple options for international payment needs.

Sync with accounting software: I also encourage businesses to leverage payment partners that integrate with major accounting software providers to ensure seamless management of both domestic and international payments, by streamlining your workflows and eliminating the need for double data entry.

New York-based apparel brand Bombas sends roughly 50% of their payments to 10 international vendors, even more when they need to bulk up their inventory to prepare for the holiday rush. However, Melissa Harris, Director of Accounting Operations at Bombas, isn’t worried about making international payments because they use BILL.

“BILL Accounts Payable does it all in one shot, using the same process for both domestic and international payments. It’s been a much more seamless process with BILL than it has been with other AP systems I’ve used,” said Harris.

3. GET REAL-TIME DATA AND INSIGHTS FOR GROWTH

A frequent challenge for businesses is they don’t typically have large teams of finance professionals to provide analysis, insights, data and forecasting. Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) technology is changing that. With FP&A, SMBs can predict future cash flow, understand trends and opportunities, and make better business decisions, faster. Timely data and analytics can help

technology supports the creation of rolling forecasts, allowing companies to adjust their financial plans in response to changing market conditions and evolving business needs.

4.

MAXIMIZING FINANCIAL REWARDS

Taking advantage of financial rewards is not just about the bottom line - it’s an opportunity for businesses to show appreciation and build a positive workplace culture. Many SMBs are already familiar with rewards programs for travel, but why not extend those benefits to everyday spending?

Virtual cards with rewards programs can be a game-changer for SMBs. One common way businesses like to use virtual cards is for business subscriptions management. This ensures payments are made on time, within budget, and without the risk of overcharging, with real-time visibility into spending. Implementing rewards programs: Similar to consumer rewards programs, virtual cards with rewards programs are a powerful tool for businesses. Choosing financial tools that offer cashback, points or other incentives transforms everyday expenses into opportunities for savings or investment. It’s a great way to turn routine transactions into opportunities that add value to your business.

5.

CHOOSE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS THAT CAN INCREASE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

According to The BILL 2024 State of Financial Automation Report, SMBs are increasingly looking to AI and automation to improve efficiency and productivity. In fact, 85% of SMBs are enthusiastic about using AI for their financial operations. One of the most important considerations is which company you choose to partner with to deliver these AI capabilities for your daily operations. You want to work with technology partners that understand the opportunity for you to harness the use of AI for your business to drive impact. For example, AI can help you improve customer experiences, gain efficiencies, or scale. This in turn can free up your valuable time, allowing you and your staff to focus on more strategic tasks that can foster innovation and growth for the business.

you make the best decisions to help take your business to the next level. Strategic financial planning: FP&A technology enables SMBs to collaborate closely with executives and department heads, aligning financial goals with the overarching business strategy. By assessing market trends, competitive landscapes, and internal capabilities, businesses can create robust long-term financial plans that support sustainable growth. Budgeting and forecasting: Businesses can also develop detailed annual budgets that reflect accurate cash flow forecasts. This

While AI technology is still developing and will continue to evolve, there are great technology partners that can help your business maximize AI. Choose a partner that is innovation-forward, already innovating with AI, and is an early adopter with your unique needs and interests top of mind.

Angels Nest, Mentor Empower Motivate and Winners Circle Group of Texas Celebrate Nutrition Center Grand Opening

on-profit organizations Angels Nest, Incorporated and Mentor Empower Motivate (M.E.M.), in partnership with the Winners Circle Group of Texas, hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 13 for a new nutrition center, which will help combat food insecurity within the community.

Located at 3995 FM 1960 W, Houston, Texas 77068, the nutrition center’s purpose is to address food insecurity relating to youth in foster care and the community at large. The center is a client-choice food pantry designed to honor the dietary restrictions and preferences of those served. The center’s grocery store model will offer a sense of dignity and pride, and the organization’s partnership with the Houston Food Bank will allow for monthly food distribution to the center.

“The nutrition center grand opening was a long-awaited and momentous occasion,” Malika Bruno, founder and executive director of Angels Nest, said. “We’re eager to begin serving the community.”

“Our youth enter our programs not knowing how to prepare meals. They rely on Uber Eats and fast food,” Bruno was quoted saying to d-mars. “The nutrition center is part of our wellness program to address food insecurity and nutrition education. It will become a training center with a full kitchen, cooking classes and food management training.”

“It gives people in the community that may not be able to get food an opportunity to come and get food for their families,” said Reggie Barnes, co-founder of the Winners Circle Group of Texas. “We have so many people that are suffering from lack of food and nutrition, and this particular center, where its located, will give people in the community an opportunity to come get fresh food because the Houston Food Bank is going to provide us with it.”

“I’m very excited about the opening of the nutrition center. I think that it will definitely serve as one of the pillars of the community in regard to the quality and education of food, as far as nutrition within the body,” M.E.M. founder and Winners Circle Group of Texas co-founder Mack Montgomery, Jr. said. “I’m very excited to be able to partner with Angels Nest to be able to create and follow through on this endeavor.

M.E.M. was made for the youth and for my kids to start getting in the habit of giving back to the community, and that’s one of the things that Reggie, who is my partner at Winners Circle, taught me.”

North Shore HS Educator Named HAABSE Secondary Teacher of the Year

ome say that a good education can change anyone and a good teacher can change everything.

One Galena Park ISD educator is proving just how much teachers have the power to ignite the passion and love for learning that students need to succeed.

Mrs. LaTisha Guillory, an English teacher at North Shore Senior High 10th Grade Center, was named the 2023 Houston Area

Alliance Black School Educator (HAABSE) Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year for the entire Houston area in February 2024, a recognition given to educators who exemplify excellence in their field. The purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Awards is to say “thank you” to teachers for the outstanding job they do in working with children. The HAABSE Retired Educator’s Committee reviewed applications, determined and interviewed finalists and then selected the recipients. Guillory told d-mars that the honor surprised her.

“For me, it’s just simply doing my job,

building relationships, being an impactful teacher, and I was just so happy to be recognized for doing that,” Guillory said.

“To sum it up, this honor means being an effective teacher and doing the groundwork. Because I had just been doing my job, it was unexpected, so I was totally, totally shocked. It still hasn’t settled in.”

Guillory, a Grambling State University alumna with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Psychology, began her teaching journey 22 years ago while attending graduate school and working full-time at Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home, where she supervised and nurtured misguided youth in state custody. Observing a rise in adverse behavior during school hours deepened her commitment to her youth by prompting a desire to make a difference beyond juvenile confinement. That commitment has translated to her work at North Shore. In addition to being an educator, Guillory also serves as a cheerleader for her students.

The owner of Balloon Bosses takes pride in celebrating them for birthdays, athletic games and other special occasions. She goes above and beyond to ensure her students feel special, seen and heard.

“I try to make sure that they walk into balloons or some type of celebration,” she said. “I don’t take this job lightly. I know the impact that I have on our future.”

While Guillory loves being an educator, her faith was tested when she recently lost her mother to cancer.

“This year was personal for me because for the last seven years in addition to teaching, I was a caregiver for my mom, who had cancer. The day that I got back from spring break, that Monday, my mom had a stroke, in addition to the cancer. We found out the cancer had spread and I lost my mom a week later—in the middle of testing,” Guillory tearfully explained. “It was rough, and so coming back to school, I was like, ‘God, I give up. I can’t do anymore.’ I literally told my mom (before she died), ‘I’m not going back to teach,’ and she was like, ‘Why? You are going back. You’re going back and you’re going to continue.’”

Guillory did just what her mother told her to do and continued to teach.

“It’s essentially been a clean sweep this year,” Guillory said. “I just focused. I threw myself into everything I could throw myself into. It’s mine.”

In addition to the HAASBE Secondary Teacher of the Year honor, Guillory’s recent awards recognizing her community and classroom efforts include Houston’s Pink Bowl Most Influential Leader, NS10 Houston Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE) Teacher of the Year, Distinguished Distinction of Academic Growth and a Women’s History Month spotlight feature celebrating achievements of female entrepreneurs.

Her advice for other educators is to give themselves grace.

“Every day is a new day to start off new with your kids. Before trying to teach our kids, make sure you do the groundwork,” Guilory said.

Brazoswood HS Senior Breaks School’s Triple Jump Record a 6th Time, Set to Graduate

any high school seniors are getting ready for graduation this month and one Brazoswood High School athlete is leaving her mark and an incredible impact on the school’s athletic department.

Brooklyn Baker, a straight-A student with a 3.8-grade point average, is known for accomplishments that have put a spotlight on Brazoswood High. She recently broke the girls’ triple jump record for the sixth time this past track season with a jump of 40 feet 1.5 inches and broke the girls’ long jump record with a jump of 19 feet and 9.75 inches. On top of that, Baker placed first in the triple and long jumps and qualified in the 100m dash at the district meet held at Challenger Stadium in Webster, Texas, last month. When it comes to all of her hard-earned victories, Baker says she did not accomplish them on her own.

“I definitely know that it’s a God-given gift and I always give God the glory for whatever it is that I accomplish,” she said during an interview with d-mars. “It’s honestly exciting knowing that I’m always improving and always finding new ways to improve, so I’m pretty humble about it.”

She also credits her parents, Edmond and Kamisha Baker, and a former coach for helping

her grow, both athletically and as a student.

“From the beginning, during my freshman year, she (Coach Christina Hemmen) was always trying to find new ways for me to grow and she definitely transformed the way that I jumped into way, way better ways,” she explained. “I know for my mom, she’s just always been there. If I want to work on something, she’s going to be there as soon as possible and whenever to take me to the gym and take me to the track. She’s always helping me get stronger. My dad provides moral support and he’s always there to give me motivational words.”

In addition to track, Baker also played basketball and volleyball. She was a part of the Athletic Leadership Council and Practical Floral Design. She will attend Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, on a full-ride scholarship and plans to study animal science or veterinarian medicine.

“I really just liked the environment. Since I am going to be away from my family, I wanted to go into something that was like another family for me. I like the little town vibes,” she said. “I slowly realized that I like being around animals and helping them in different ways.”

Brooklyn looks forward to “breaking out” of her “shell,” building relationships and working on her skillsets for college track post-graduation.

1. SET REALISTIC GOALS: Start by setting achievable and realistic goals for your summer body. Avoid aiming for drastic weight loss in a short period. Instead, focus on making sustainable lifestyle changes that promote long-term health and fitness.

2. PLAN YOUR MEALS: Planning your meals in advance can help you stay on track with your diet. Take time each week to plan nutritious meals and snacks that align with your fitness goals. Meal prepping can also save time and prevent impulsive food choices.

3. KEEP HEALTHY SNACKS HANDY: Avoid temptation by keeping healthy snacks readily available. Stock up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other nutritious options to satisfy cravings without derailing your diet.

4. STAY HYDRATED: Drinking an adequate amount of water is essential for overall health and can support weight loss efforts. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day and avoid sugary beverages that can add unnecessary calories to your diet.

5. PRACTICE PORTION CONTROL: Pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates and bowls to help control portions and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

6. MONITOR YOUR PROGRESS: Keep track of your progress by weighing yourself regularly and taking measurements. Celebrate small victories along the way and use setbacks as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach.

7. FIND ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNERS: Share your fitness goals with friends, family, or a support group to help stay accountable. Having someone to share your successes and challenges with can provide motivation and encouragement.

8. INCORPORATE REGULAR EXERCISE: Combine your healthy eating habits with regular exercise to maximize results. Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s running, swimming, yoga, or weightlifting, and make them a regular part of your routine.

9. PRACTICE MINDFUL EATING: Be mindful of what you eat by paying attention to hunger cues, savoring each bite, and avoiding distractions while eating. Mindful eating can help prevent overeating and promote a healthier relationship with food.

10. ALLOW FOR FLEXIBILITY: While consistency is key, it’s also important to allow for flexibility in your diet. Don’t deprive yourself of the foods you love entirely but instead practice moderation and balance.

By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can maintain discipline for your diet and work towards achieving your summer body goals in a healthy and sustainable way. Remember that consistency and patience are essential and focus on progress rather than perfection. With dedication and perseverance, you can achieve the summer body you desire and feel confident and empowered all season long.

Empowering Patients: TAKING CONTROL OF VEIN HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

EMBRACING HOLISTIC WELLNESS: Vein health is intertwined with overall well-being. Empowerment encompasses not only addressing physical symptoms but also prioritizing mental, emotional, and social health. Encouraging patients to embrace holistic wellness practices, such as stress management and social support, fosters resilience and enhances overall quality of life.

ADVOCATING FOR ACCESSIBILITY AND EQUITY: True empowerment requires addressing systemic barriers to healthcare access. Advocating for policies that ensure affordable, inclusive, and culturally competent care empowers patients from all backgrounds to prioritize their vein health and seek timely interventions.

In conclusion, empowering patients to take control of their vein health and well-being is a multifaceted endeavor. By providing education, fostering collaboration, promoting self-care, embracing holistic wellness, and advocating for accessibility, individuals can navigate the complexities of vein-related conditions with confidence and resilience. Through empowerment, we can strive towards healthier, happier, and more equitable communities.

EDUCATION AS THE CORNERSTONE: Empowering patients begins with education. Understanding the risk factors, symptoms, and available treatments arms individuals with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their care. From the benefits of regular exercise to the importance of wearing compression stockings, education lays the foundation for proactive vein health management.

ADVOCATING FOR SELF-CARE: Empowerment extends beyond knowledge to action. Encouraging patients to adopt self-care measures, such as maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, empowers them to take control of their vein health. By implementing habits that promote circulation and reduce strain on the veins, patients can alleviate symptoms and reduce further progression.

COLLABORATIVE DECISION-MAKING: Effective healthcare is a partnership. Empowering patients involves fostering a collaborative relationship between patients and healthcare providers. By engaging in open discussions about treatment options and preferences, patients can actively participate in crafting their care plans, leading to more personalized and effective interventions.

the Importance WellBeing

of Mental Health and Strategies for

ental health is as crucial as physical health, yet it often does not receive the same attention or level of care. Good mental health allows individuals to realize their potential, cope with the stresses of life, work productively and contribute meaningfully to their communities. It forms the foundation of emotional, psychological and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and act.

However, when our mental health is neglected, it can lead to significant challenges. Poor mental health can impair our ability to make choices, communicate effectively and handle stress, which can strain relationships, reduce work performance and diminish overall quality of life. Thus, maintaining mental health isn’t just about preventing disorders but also about promoting overall well-being and happiness.

To ensure mental well-being, it’s essential to adopt a proactive approach to nurture and maintain it. The strategies outlined are designed to help create a balanced lifestyle and enhance one’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Let’s delve into these strategies to understand how they contribute to maintaining and improving mental health.

CONCLUSION

The importance of mental health cannot be overstated. By recognizing its value and taking steps to nurture our mental well-being, we can improve our quality of life, strengthen our relationships, and contribute positively to our communities. Remember, taking care of your mental health is not a luxury but a crucial part of living a healthy, balanced life.

STRATEGIES TO NURTURE MENTAL HEALTH

• Engage in exercise: Physical activity is a potent stress reliever. It not only helps to control weight but also enhances mental health by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

• Nutritional intake: What we eat impacts our brain, and consequently our mood and mental health. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains can provide essential nutrients that boost brain health and overall well-being.

• Prioritize rest: Sleep and mental health are closely linked. Lack of sleep can exacerbate stress, depression, and anxiety, so aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night. Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine to help signal your body it’s time to wind down.

• Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can improve mental health by reducing stress and enhancing overall emotional resilience.

• Maintain social contact: A supportive network of friends and family can provide emotional support and decrease feelings of isolation. Regular social interactions can help ward off anxiety and depression, providing a sense of belonging and security.

• Consultation and therapy: It is vital to seek help when struggling with mental health issues. Therapists, counselors and psychologists can provide strategies to manage mental health more effectively, offering support through therapy and, if necessary, medication.

• Engage in activities you enjoy: Picking up new skills or hobbies can improve your mental health by boosting self-confidence and providing a sense of achievement. Whether it’s painting, writing, or learning a new instrument, find activities that bring joy and enrich your life.

SICKLE CELL

NOT JUST A BLACK DISEASE OR TRAIT

onsidered the most common genetic blood disorder in the world, sickle cell affects 300 million people worldwide. In the United States, most of the 4 million affected with sickle cell trait, including the 18,000 Houstonians with the sickle cell trait, are not aware that sickle cell is not just a Black or African American condition, but in fact affects people of African, Asian, Indian, Latin, Mediterranean, Italian, Greek and Turkish descent. In other words, anyone, including Caucasians or white people, can have sickle cell disease or the sickle cell trait.

CSharing this information about sickle cell is the everyday work of Houston-based charity

“As One Foundation,” which was founded by sickle cell carrier and former Houston Texan Devard Darling, who lost his identical twin brother to exertional sickling in 2001 at Florida State University during a football conditioning workout.

“There are so many people with sickle cell trait that have no idea what it is, or how it can effect them,” said Darling. “Especially those who think this it is only in African Americans. At the As One Foundation, we address it all because you don’t have sickle cell disease without the existence of sickle cell trait.”

The organization’s mission is to empower families globally, delivering life-saving sickle cell education.

Despite the disproportionate impact on people of African descent, sickle cell trait receives scant attention, often amounting to just five minutes in a typical medical school curriculum. Compounding this issue, many carriers remain unaware of their status, contributing to the staggering statistic that 97% of sickle cell disease births occur to parents unaware of their trait statuses. Moreover, despite nationwide newborn screening since 2006, individuals of childbearing age born before then may lack awareness of their status. Addressing this, the As One Foundation advocates for more accessible and affordable testing solutions to empower individuals and mitigate the impact of sickle cell disease.

All As One Foundation events and activities acknowledge sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease as factors existing not independent of each other but because of each other. Sickle disease births are prospectively the result of procreation between two sickle cell trait positive parents and any combination of one sickle cell disease parent will certainly result in a sickle cell trait birth, at least. In order to increase quality health care and directly address disparities associated with chronic and acute blood conditions, the As One Foundation seeks to fill knowledge gaps of four distinct populations with our programming: patients, caregivers/families, community members and healthcare providers.

The As One Foundation serves by the philosophy that sickle cell is experienced by not just the patient, so the organization’s service delivery aims to be relevant to everyone while also empowering those that live with sickle cell trait and disease to thrive while challenging the broader community to learn as much as they can about the disorder. Torsha Johnson Launches Shower Beauty, Purpose & Passion

ne Houston-area businesswoman and church leader is showing others what it looks like when passion, faith, patience and purpose collide while trying to accomplish your dreams.

Being a wife, mother and first lady of Higher Dimension Church Houston are just a few things that Torsha Johnson is widely known for. For years, she has helped lead women of all ages as they grow in their relationship with God. This calling, which she has wholeheartedly embraced, is now being reflected in the beauty industry with the creation of the Shower Chique Shower Cap. The cap, which helps protect a woman’s brows, hair and lashes from the direct spray of water, is the only product on the market of its kind. The product was created with the intention of empowering a woman’s beauty routine. And while the journey to launch the unique cap was certainly worthwhile, Johnson says it included some roadblocks, hurdles and setbacks that tested her faith.

“The idea to create the Shower Chique Shower Cap came back in 2016,” Johnson said during an interview with d-mars. “My husband and I wrote ‘The Answer’ book, where we help navigate singles into healthy relationships and married couples into relationships that last, and we had our conference going and we decided once we wrote the book that we would tour some states here in the U.S. I wanted to get glammed up with the makeup and false eyelash strips. For me, I had to have them professionally installed, so I would get the individual eyelash extensions and they’re pretty expensive. As we were traveling so much and I would get glammed up and get in the shower, my lashes were falling out. I was visiting the lash tech every two weeks and I was like, ‘This is too much.’” After doing some research, Johnson said she was unsuccessful in finding a product that would help her.

“I said, ‘Hmm, this is so interesting that there isn’t anything out here to help with eyelashes when you get in the shower,’ so the idea came to me to create a shower

cap to protect my hair and then a clear visor to protect my lashes from the direct spray of water,” Johnson said. “When this idea came to me, I thought, ‘Lord, I really want to be a blessing to Your kingdom. I want to be a blessing to my family. My husband has been the breadwinner our entire marriage. I want to be able to contribute. I want to be able to leave a legacy and I believe this idea is from You. If this is really you telling me to do this, then just give me confirmation to move forward with it.’ Like Peter, I just wanted to know if it was Him, then I needed Him to tell me to come walk on the water.”

Johnson said she was prompted to have faith and walk on water through the support of her husband Terrance and the people who would help her bring the product to fruition.

“The Lord answered those prayers for me, so it was very clear to me that not only had He told me to walk on the water, He had confirmed that, ‘I’m the one that’s with you and I’m going to provide everything you need in order to get this done.’”

Johnson admitted that the journey of creating the Shower Chique Shower Cap wasn’t an easy one. After initially being told that the process of creating the product would be straightforward, she realized it was everything but that.

“There were moments when I felt like, ‘Man, I thought this was going to be simple.’ A business guide that I connected with told me, ‘Torsha, you’re taking a product that already exists and you are reinventing something, so this shouldn’t take a long time,’” she explained.

Johnson said that moments of doubt, fear and resistance, in addition to events like Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic, delayed her process of launching the product.

“I prayed about it and ended up connecting with a second company that was actually maybe less than five miles from my house. When I found them, I said to myself, ‘This is nobody but God.’”

After what seemed to be a smooth process, Johnson said the time came for her to pay the company but after giving them the money, the company shut down.

“Weeks later when I’m expecting updates and things like that, they closed shop, shut down, left, stole our money and that was that,” Johnson said. “At that point, I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. How do I get to this point and now I’m going to have to start all over?’ The good news is that God was looking out for me because one of the people who was a part of that business whose money was also stolen was prompted to get my pattern that was at the shop. From there, I had to find another manufacturer.”

After doing more research, Johnson connected with another company that agreed to help bring her vision to life, but the COVID-19 pandemic struck, causing another delay.

“That was another hurdle I had to get over,” Johnson said. “It was really weird. I just felt like apparently, it’s just not time. I had everything I needed but couldn’t find a manufacturer. There were lessons learned along the way, but I discovered that no journey of an inventor is the same but every lesson learned made me better. I’m stronger and I’m wiser as a result of it. I just thank God for it. Even the losses were wins.”

From this process, Johnson has been able to help other female entrepreneurs in networking communities to ensure they can avoid the mistakes she made.

“My company is not just about a shower cap that protects your brows, lashes and hair—it’s really bigger than that. It’s empowering the beauty that’s within a woman. I want to help women know that you’re beautiful without the glam. You’re beautiful because of how God made you.”

Johnson’s entrepreneurial journey has helped her awaken the dormant gifts inside of her.

“I’ve always had it in me. That’s something I never really realized,” she said. “This

process me that faith in the earth.”

My heart is just to help them.”

SFRANCHISING VS. INDEPENDENT Small Businesses in the Restaurant Space

o many people are looking to start a small business in the restaurant space without the thorough knowledge and support needed to make that business a success. Many don’t understand the work involved in creating a product that a consumer will continuously buy, securing the necessary foot traffic for survival, technology and the part it plays in that space, in addition to all the other aspects that go along with running a small business restaurant. As a result, 60% of these restaurants (mom-and-pop or independent small businesses) fail in the first year and 80% fail within five years.

Mark Norman, Managing Partner for SHMARK Restaurant Group, says that what he learned in his 10 years of franchising is that most people in our community want “exterior recognition, meaning their name on the building,” more so than franchising or having someone else’s name on the building.

“They would rather forego the product support, marketing support, IT support, etc. from professionals in those fields, just to have their name on the marquee,” Norman stated.

“What people should focus on entering the space is whose name appears on the bank account and where the money goes from the traffic flowing through the restaurant.”

At the end of the day, Norman believes people should be in business to make money, not for recognition with their name on the sign. Norman said he oftentimes speaks with people who don’t want to pay royalties and ad fund fees.

“I look at it differently,” Norman said. “I am more than happy to pay those fees and take that work off my plate

and I can focus on the operation piece of my business. Again, trying to juggle too much will more than likely lead to a failure of a business, i.e. -- the 80% number reference above.”

Norman says that franchising and name recognition can lead to an easier path of funding.

“When an entrepreneur goes into a financial institution to seek funding for the restaurant, it’s a lot easier. If you have an established brand behind you, then it goes in with

your name on the building,” he explained. “For example, banks are more willing to lend. If Tony goes into a bank to finance a Burger King, it’s easier for Tony to get financing for a Burger King than it is for him to get financing for Tony’s Burgers, especially without an asset. Some of the excuses I hear, although some may have some value, generally are not necessarily true. Financial institutions are in the business to make money and without an asset, they lend based on the probability of them receiving repayment of that loan.”

Hence, with an established brand with a good succession rate behind you, there’s a greater likelihood you will get funded for that project, not to mention the established relationships that some franchises have with lending institutions that can weigh heavily in the entrepreneurs’ favor to secure funding.

Mark Norman, Managing Partner for SHMARK Restaurant Group, says that what he learned in his 10 years of franchising is that most people in our community want “exterior recognition, meaning their name on the building,” more so than franchising or having someone else’s name on the building.

Understanding the Benefits of Cryptocurrency

NTRODUCTION TO CRYPTOCURRENCY:

Cryptocurrencies are digital forms of money that operate on decentralized networks, unlike traditional currencies that are issued by governments. Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency introduced in 2009 by an entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto, inspired the development of numerous additional digital currencies. Transactions involving cryptocurrencies occur through blockchain technology, which ensures transparency, military-grade encryption for security, and the inability to be changed or altered. Here are some benefits of cryptocurrencies that both individuals and institutions may find appealing:

• Growth Potential: Bitcoin, alongside many other digital assets, has historically provided above- average returns for long-term investors, fueled by rising demand and programming mechanisms that limit or decrease the available supply. Investors should take note of the upcoming Bitcoin halving scheduled for April 2024, where rewards for miners are halved every four years, potentially impacting the supply dynamics, and affecting Bitcoin’s price. Bitcoin’s previous halv ings have historically resulted in positive price impacts, although there’s no guarantee the same dynamic will occur with the upcoming halving in April 2024. However, given the recent approval of Bitcoin ETFs increasing de mand, a similar trend is possible.

• Diversification: cies in an investment portfolio can provide diversification benefits, reducing overall port folio risk by spreading investments across different types of assets aside from stocks, bonds, gold, and real estate.

• Decentralization: Cryptocurrencies operate on networks that aren’t controlled by a central authority, like a government or bank. This means that the average citizen has more control over their money and transactions, without the risk of government interference or economic instability affecting their finances. This can provide greater financial security and independence to individuals, allowing them to manage their money without relying on traditional financial institutions.

• Hedge Against Economic Uncertainty: Cryptocurrencies serve as a hedge against inflation or devaluation of traditional currencies, safeguarding investors’ savings amid economic uncertainty. This means that individuals can rely on cryptocurrencies to maintain the value of their money, offering stability during economic instability.

• Accessibility and Liquidity: Cryptocurrency markets are open 24/7, making it easy to send money anywhere in the world at any time. This also means that individuals can quickly buy, sell, or trade cryptocurrencies whenever they need to, offering high

• Technological Innovation: Cryptocurrencies utilize blockchain, a decentralized ledger system, to revolutionize industries like finance, supply chain management, and healthcare. This innovation also paves the way for integration with other technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), smart contracts, and decentralized applications (DApps), broadening blockchain’s potential applications across different sectors of the global market.

HIGHER

The approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 10th, 2024, has eliminated the necessity for investors to purchase Bitcoin directly on a cryptocurrency exchange. Instead, investors can now gain exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements through these ETFs, which can be purchased within brokerage accounts, making it more accessible and convenient for both institutional and individual investors alike.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements without directly owning the underlying asset. The approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs by the SEC signifies increased acceptance and legitimization of Bitcoin as an investable asset class, further fueling its adoption and potentially driving up its value in the long term.

CONCLUSION:

Investing in cryptocurrencies presents exciting opportunities both in the near-term and long-term but it also entails inherent risks. It’s essential for investors to conduct thorough research, understand the market dynamics, and exercise caution before making investment decisions. When seeking advice on cryptocurrency investments, it’s crucial to find an advisor who thoroughly understands the cryptocurrency market. It’s worth noting that not all financial professionals possess this expertise, especially since digital assets are still in the early stages of adoption. Therefore, staying informed and doing your own research about cryptocurrency trends and developments is essential for making informed investment decisions on your own.

Antitrust Settlement Reshapes Real Estate: NAREB Readies for Change

n a development reshaping the real estate industry, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) finalized a historic settlement late last year following a multibillion-dollar antitrust ruling. This $418 million settlement, expected to go into effect by July pending judicial approval, marks a significant shift in loosening the powerful trade group’s grip on America’s housing market.

The settlement comes after a Missouri lawsuit challenged the decades-old system requiring the agents of home sellers to split the commission on sales with the agents of home buyers. Most commissions range between five and six percent of home sale prices. Under the settlement, home sellers and their agents can no longer outline compensation for agents representing buyers within their MLS listings. They can, however, negotiate outside of the official listing.

Still, the agreement effectively ends decades of the NAR’s profound influence, with its 1.5 million agents shaping industry practices. Central to the lawsuit was the standard commission structure, typically around 6% of a home’s sale price, split between the seller’s and buyer’s brokers. Critics argued that specific NAR rules have artificially inflated these commissions, maintaining them at levels far above international standards.

The settlement allows brokers to advertise rates and consumers to seek better deals. Projections indicate a potential reduction in commissions by 25% to 50%, according to TD Cowen Insights, heralding a new era of affordability in real estate transactions.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) said it is gearing up to support its members, who predominantly serve Black communities.

Dr. Courtney Johnson Rose, President of NAREB, acknowledged the profound implications of the settlement on the organization’s members, particularly those representing buyers.

“NAREB recognizes that this settlement, if approved by the judge, will bring dramatic changes to our industry,” Rose stated. “Our members often represent Black families and individuals who struggle to raise money for the down payments needed to purchase homes due to decades of discrimination and a lack of generational wealth.”

OUR EXPERTS

To address these challenges, NAREB has outlined a series of initiatives:

Special Task Force: A dedicated task force will analyze the settlement’s impact and recommend strategies to assist members and promote Black homeownership.

Realtist Toolkit: NAREB will develop a comprehensive toolkit providing members with essential information and resources.

Black Developer Academy: Expansion of the Black Developer Academy will offer training and support to members interested in real estate development, diversifying revenue streams and increasing housing inventory in communities of color.

Community Engagement : Leveraging national initiatives such as the Building Black Wealth Tour, NAREB aims to strengthen connections between members and their communities while educating consumers on homeownership.

While the settlement promises increased transparency, concerns persist regarding potential burdens on buyers, especially first-time buyers. Moreover, the anticipated commission reduction could precipitate a significant upheaval in the brokerage industry, potentially prompting a mass exodus of brokers.

“NAREB is prepared to lead in this changing environment and ensure that our members, Realists, are strong and remain valuable assets in communities,” Rose said. “NAREB is committed to the advancement of Black real estate professionals, increasing Black home ownership and our enduring pursuit for Democracy in Housing.”

TechChallenges Small Businesses NAVIGATING FOR TODAY’S

ntrepreneurs thrive on challenges, but one hurdle that stands out when starting a small business is technology. While savvy business owners understand the need for the right tech to stay competitive, the cost and complexity can be daunting. However, having deep pockets isn’t the only solution to tech problems. Here’s a look at common technology challenges small businesses face and how to overcome them.

DATA MANAGEMENT DILEMMAS

In today’s business landscape, data is crucial. Yet, many small business owners struggle with organizing and utilizing their data effectively. Whether it’s issues with data collection, storage, or analysis tools, poor data management can hinder growth. Upgrading data storage systems and partnering with technology experts can unlock the potential of valuable data, empowering better sales strategies and customer relations.

INTEGRATION HEADACHES

Seamless integration of systems is vital for operational efficiency, but it’s often a challenge for small businesses.

Piecemeal upgrades can lead to disjointed systems that don’t work harmoniously. For instance, sales software that doesn’t sync with inventory systems can create inefficiencies. Maintaining continuity with vendors during system upgrades can prevent integration issues and optimize business processes.

CYBERSECURITY CONCERNS

Many small business owners underestimate the risk of cyberattacks, assuming they only target larger corporations. However, data breaches affect 58% of small businesses, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity measures. Implementing firewalls, regular monitoring, and staying updated on security systems are crucial steps to protect against cyber threats.

TRAINING NEEDS

When adopting new software, adequate employee training is essential. Small teams may require more training due to limited support resources, and assuming employees will become experts without proper training can lead to inefficiencies. Investing in professional training sessions ensures employees can effectively utilize new technology, maximizing its value.

MAINTENANCE MATTERS

Regular maintenance is vital to keep technology systems running smoothly. While cloud-based systems may receive automatic updates, partnering with managed services can ensure systems are monitored and maintained for optimal performance.

Technology should empower, not hinder, small businesses. By addressing these common challenges and leveraging technology effectively, businesses can enhance efficiency and drive success in today’s competitive landscape.

The Impact of Digital Literacy

It is likely that in one way or another, you access the internet or perform some kind of digital activity throughout the day. Digital literacy has transcended its status as a mere buzzword and become an indispensable skill in a world dominated by technology. In an era where digital technology permeates every facet of our existence, from communication to education and employment, being digitally literate is no longer optional. Regardless of age or professional background, proficiency

in navigating the digital landscape is essential for survival in our modern world.

The Mayor’s Office of Adult Literacy (MOAL) in Houston, Texas, has proposed a plan to strengthen digital literacy and enhance skills training amongst adults. This initiative aims to elevate adults’ digital proficiency, boost their income, narrow the wealth gap, and foster collective prosperity. Addressing income disparities and promoting economic equality are pivotal in this pursuit. As a board member of MOAL, our primary objectives focus on enhancing digital skills which encompasses reinforcing digital education, refining digital training, advocating for digital literacy, and nurturing public

engagement in harnessing digital talents to achieve a standard level of digital literacy comparable to that of other metropolitan cities throughout the country. The disparity in digital literacy among adults exacerbates the digital divide, impacting income inequality. Bridging this gap through the enhancement of digital infrastructure and skills directly influences adults’ economic status, crucial for both national economies and individual livelihoods. According to the American New Media Alliance, digital literacy encompasses the capacity to comprehend, generate, obtain, and employ digital resources across various disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary, general, and creative proficiencies.

Addressing adult digital literacy is a collective societal responsibility, demanding action from the entire community. Experts underscore that there must be a concentrated effort from government, businesses, charities, and various organizations to enhance digital literacy among adults. They unanimously emphasize that without individual accountability and robust support networks, progress in digital literacy would stagnate.

A significant opportunity lies in businesses’ reallocation of resources toward upskilling their employees rather than resorting to layoffs. This approach not only preserves valuable talent but also accelerates their transition into higher-value roles, fostering a more dynamic and resilient workforce. Likewise, effective campaigns promoting digital literacy and social equity in education unveil pivotal principles. Foremost, they prioritize ensuring equitable access to technology and internet connectivity, guaranteeing all students possess the required tools for digital learning. Through collective efforts and initiatives that promote collaboration among educators, policymakers, and community members, stakeholders will be able to pool resources and knowledge to develop holistic approaches that advance digital literacy and foster social equality in education.
